Mets Activate Robert Gsellman, Designate Brandon Drury

By Mark Polishuk | October 2, 2021 at 5:33pm CDT

The Mets have activated right-hander Robert Gsellman from the 60-day injured list.  In corresponding moves, utilityman Brandon Drury has been designated for assignment, while right-hander Tylor Megill has been optioned to Triple-A.

Gsellman will get a couple more chances to get on the mound during what been an another injury-plagued year for the swingman.  A right lat strain sent Gsellman to the IL back on June 21, thus limiting him to only 26 2/3 innings in 2021.  Since injuries also greatly limited Gsellman in 2020, he has pitched a total of 40 2/3 innings over the last two seasons.

All this missed time has had an adverse effect on Gsellman’s earnings, considering that 2020 and 2021 were both arbitration-eligible years.  Gsellman will be arb-eligible for a third and final time this winter, but won’t get much beyond his $1.3MM 2021 salary.  On the plus side, this low price tag could make the Mets inclined to bring him back rather than non-tendering him.

Drury signed a minor league deal with New York last winter and ended up earning $1.55MM in guaranteed salary once the Mets selected his contract.  In 88 plate appearances at the big league level, Drury provide above-average (112 OPS+, 114 wRC+) offense, hitting .274/.307/.476 with four homers.  Much of that production, however, was packed into a seven-game hit streak in late July.  It seems likely that the seven-year MLB veteran will have to settle for another minors contract this offseason in order to catch on with another team.

Drury was something like 8 for 11 with 3 home runs against the Braves this year. Ironic because Drury was drafted by the Braves and was part of the Justin Upton trade of 2013.

Morons run this franchise. Drury was one of our best hitters all year yet they keep Gsellman whos been awful since hes been called up other than the first 2 months of his major league career. Drury had a better season than Conforto yet Conforto bats 3rd and Drury gets da’d. They need to fire Alderson already. Hes done nothing other than making the team arguably worse everu year and getting rid of our good players like Turner, Murphy, etc.

You dont watch the games. He was mainly used as a pinch hitter and wasn’t allowed to start games due to the idiot manager favoring Conforto over him. He got more clutch hits then 90% of the roster this year

The “idiot manager” didn’t start Drury because he’s not a starting MLB player. Conforto had a bad season, but no way should he be sitting behind Drury. And yes, I watch a lot of Mets games. They are my JV game most nights before the Dodger game gets underway.

Fans can be weird. Many of them seem to watch the games without having any idea what they’re looking at.

Drury was decent. However he is a free agent in one day. Gsellman has control for another year. Alderson has made some dumb moves, but this isn’t one of them.

True but Drury was a better bat than Peraza, who got more majors roster time this season. Also, Gsellman could be non tendered. I think they will tender him but you never know with this team

He actually comes with an additional season of control through arbitration in 2022, and would have likely only cost around $1.75 million to $2 million, which for a guy who put up a .783 OPS off of the bench with some power, isn’t a bad deal. Especially on arbitration, where you can void all but 1/6th of the deal if they don’t perform in camp.
Chances are, he clears and gets a minor league deal elsewhere.

Gsellman is not that bad. He’s a 7th or 8th reliever out of the pen guy, what do you expect from that role? Calling him up for the last few games in a lost season is not a sign of incompetence. Not at all. And you are way overrating Drury based on a minuscule sample size. Claiming he is better than Conforto is ridiculous.

@Cosmo You watching the game? Your “8th inning reliever” is really closing the door, 1 run in with 2 guys on already, you can retract your statement if you want

He said he’s the 7th or 8th guy out of the pen not a 7th of 8th inning pitcher. He’s a garbage time pitcher essentially.

Metsin7, you need to read more carefully before you misquote and respond with snarky nonsense. Tell us again how Drury is better than Conforto, eh? You might wanna consider some retractions yourself.

@Cosmo2 You still agree with your comment from half a year ago? Drury is raking while Conforto is stuck at home sitting on his couch

Not only is Gsellman not that bad, but when he gets going he has potential to be very solid. I think it makes sense for him to get a few innings in before season’s end.

Gsellman started out ok in his career but never became a good reliable reliever and not great as a starter, Drury had a few clutch hits but it’s hard to come off the bench and hit consistently. Needed a few starts to prove himself. I think he will be a decent pick up for a team like Washington or Pittsburgh. Cheap and decent .
