White Sox Select Bennett Sousa, Jason Bilous

By Anthony Franco | November 19, 2021 at 9:36pm CDT

The White Sox announced this afternoon they’ve selected pitchers Bennett Sousa and Jason Bilous to their 40-man roster. The moves keep both players from being selected in the Rule 5 draft.

Sousa, 26, was a tenth-round pick in 2018 out of the University of Virginia. The reliever has never appeared on an organizational top 30 ranking at FanGraphs or Baseball America, but he’s posted strong minor league numbers. The southpaw split the 2021 campaign between Double-A Birmingham and Triple-A Charlotte, working to a 3.61 ERA over 47 1/3 cumulative frames. Sousa fanned a strong 35.5% of opponents along the way against a 10% walk rate.

Bilous, 24, was a 13th-round pick in the same class coming out of Coastal Carolina. The right-hander has spent his entire minor league career as a starter, although his elevated walk rates might result in a bullpen future. BA ranked Bilous 21st among White Sox farmhands midseason, crediting him with a low-90s fastball and plus slider. He spent 2021 at High-A Winston-Salem and in Birmingham, combining for a 5.76 ERA over 79 2/3 innings with a 30.2% strikeout rate and a 9.1% walk percentage.

Sousa might be an option in the pen next year as a gap filler

I bet they’d be willing to throw in Sanchez to sweeten the deal.

You don’t want Grandal. He’s not much better defensively than Sanchez.

Or the White Sox could wait 15 minutes and find these things curbside at Goodwill. In addition to finding out how much they stand to save on auto insurance.

I wonder if White Sox announcer Jason Benetti had anything to do with this.

I can’t believe they were offering Machado what, $250m just a few years ago but apparently aren’t willing to pony up and pursue Semien when it’s clearly a perfect fit?

Semien wants a 6 year contract at age 31.
      No thanks.

Then I guess they give up any and all minor league talent they got left and then some for Ketel Marte. No more half measures.

If they really wanted Simien, they wouldn’t have traded him in the first place.

Much better for someone to be on base when the ball goes out of the park. Trading their second baseman was a mistake. Quite possibly whoever they can get for Kimbrel will man second. Unless the player works from a pitching mound I doubt the pale hose will sign an expensive free agent.

If u cannot remember Nick Madrigal’s name, he couldn’t have been that good.

The trade was a good one; the former Cub closer just didn’t perform well. Hernandez awful, too.

A new 2B is on his way! In the meantime, versatile Leury Garcia fills in at 2B.

I may not like your language but I agree with your commentI agree 100%. But this is a great free agent market to deal from even though very expensive. It will definitely not get any cheaper. Money is gonna get tight so people better use some discernment

Sox don’t need Kimbrel; Cubs do.

Why not reverse the trade? Sox get their 2nd baseman back and Huer. Cubs get their lights out closer back.

Great point! I think the “second baseman and Huer would rather be on the south side.. Secretly Hann has second thoughts.
