White Sox Place Lucas Giolito, AJ Pollock On Injured List

By Steve Adams | April 12, 2022 at 11:13pm CDT

1:25pm: It’ll be Lambert starting in place of Giolito this week, GM Rick Hahn tells reporters (Twitter links via Scott Merkin of MLB.com). Hahn added that the Sox are “not necessarily expecting him to go out there and get us deep into the game” but rather to open the game with a few quality innings before turning things over to the ’pen.

10:40am: The White Sox announced Tuesday that right-hander Lucas Giolito and outfielder AJ Pollock have both been placed on the 10-day injured list. Giolito left his season debut with an abdominal strain, and the Sox had already revealed that he’s expected to miss at least two starts. Pollock, meanwhile is dealing with a hamstring strain that forced him from Saturday’s game. The ChiSox recalled right-hander Jimmy Lambert and lefty Anderson Severino from Triple-A Charlotte in a pair of corresponding moves.

Giolito hurled four shutout frames before exiting his debut tilt, and he’ll now be sidelined for at least his next two turns through the rotation. His placement on the 10-day IL is retroactive to April 9, so he’s eligible for return beginning on April 19. Giolito joins right-hander Lance Lynn on the shelf, though Lynn is expected to miss considerably more time than him after undergoing knee surgery.

With their top two starters out of action, the White Sox will likely look to Dylan Cease, Dallas Keuchel, Michael Kopech, Vince Velasquez and Reynaldo Lopez to shoulder the workload in the rotation for the time being. Lambert worked three innings in his lone Triple-A appearance thus far, so he could be an option to provide some length along with Velasquez and Lopez at the back of the rotation. Chicago also inked veteran Johnny Cueto to a minor league deal earlier in the month, but he’s still building up toward game readiness after lingering as a free agent throughout the majority of Spring Training.

It’s not yet clear how much time Pollock will be expected to miss, though it’s certainly worth noting that his placement on the IL is retroactive to April 10. Acquired in a straight-up swap that sent Craig Kimbrel to the Dodgers, the 34-year-old Pollock has gotten out to a 4-for-7 start in his brief White Sox tenure so far. His absence will open the door for some additional at-bats in the outfield for Gavin Sheets, Andrew Vaughn and Adam Engel. Both Sheets and Vaughn were getting some early outfield work in just minutes after the announcement, tweets James Fegan of The Athletic.

Eh, Lucas “sticky stuff” giolito is basically a or a 4 at this point. And pollok is probably depressed that he got shipped form LA to Chicago so he’s taking a quick vacation.

You mad? Clearly you didn’t realize how good Giolito was in the 2nd half of last year and how good he was in the first start of the season before he got pulled. White Sox are 3-1 and should be 4-0. Dodgers are 1-2. I’m sure AJ Pollock is happy being on the best team in baseball

I don’t disagree with you at all on Cano. However, it’s often overlooked that the remaining salaries of Jay Bruce ($28 million) and Anthony Swarzak ($8.5 million) were also shed in that trade, (plus $20 million in cash from the Mariners), so the Mets are effectively paying Cano $12.7 million per year. Add to that the fact that Kelenic has been downright awful, Dunn has been serviceable (when not injured) and that the Mets have had a very good closer for 4 years running and this deal is not the atrocity it was once perceived as.

But Cano sucks. No argument there.

As much as I love Pollock, this is why I was happy with the trade for KImbrel. Pollock will hit 280 but will also be out for at least a month or two (if not longer) of the season. If both are healthy, that trade slants towards the White Sox.

The injury history for Pollock allows this trade to even out a bit. And if Kimbrel shows some of his early 2021 form, the trade has to be considered a big win for the Dodgers.

The Sox were never going to get much for Kimbrel. They needed to trade him and the entire league knew it. They were lucky to get someone as good as Pollock tbh, even with his injury history. They just need to accept it was a bad idea to acquire him in the first place and move on.

It was not a bad idea to acquire Kimbrel. He was the last piece in a World Series championship season. It just didn’t work out.. Just because it didn’t work out doesn’t make it a bad idea.

You can only win the championship in that given year and they tried. There is absolutely no guarantee that Madrigal (who was out for the season at the time of the time) is the final piece in the Sox winning it all this year.

Any ape with a few brain cells to rub together could tell you that what Kimbrel did with the Cubs in 2021 was completely unsustainable.

A 3.8% HR/FB rate wasn’t going to continue, nor was the .203 BABIP against him.

I was shocked how quickly he regressed, but it should be a surprise to absolutely nobody that he was as bad as he was.

I don’t care what inning Kimbrel was used in, he had absolutely no command and looked like a tired pitcher trying too hard.

I can speak for the White Sox and tell you that we would be willing to deal 1B Gavin Sheets for Montas, and will further sweeten the pot by adding a 3B Jake Burger and SP Jimmy Lambert (a major league ready arm). Oakland can plug in Sheets and Burger for the next 6 or 7 years. Let’s get this done!

tbh the A’s need pitching depth more than anything. I can’t really name a position they are at a black hole with. Garrett Crochet, Jake Burger, Jimmy Lambert for Montas is more in-line with Montas’s value. A’s simply can get more back for him from someone else at that point.

If the Sox were willing to pay their RF 16 million a year, They should of kept Kimbrel, and signed Suzuki. He’s only costing the Cubs 15 million a year and he actually plays!!!! Then they could of traded Kimbrel for something they need to get his 16 million off the books. Sure there was the posting fee but so what? Thoughts?

You underestimate just how unwilling teams were willing to take on $16M of Kimbrel.

If the White Sox wanted to clear that salary, they’d absolutely have to deal out one of their best young players, think someone like Yoelqui Cespedes or Colson Montgomery, and frankly, I’m not sure that’s remotely enough.

$16M for 50% of everything Kimbrel throws to land in another zip code is a lot of money.

Cespedes is going nowhere!!! White Sox do not trade away any talent from Cuba! Trading for Kimbrel was a mistake! Getting A.J Pollack back in return is a gift. Nick Madrigal is barely capable of hitting the ball out of the infield. That essentially makes the Kimbrel/Madrigal trade a Kimbrel/Pollack trade. Huge win for the White Sox!

Very Barry is not wrong. The Sox had already factored him as a player with plus bat control, but no power, iffy defense, and absolutely no baseball sense despite being a celebrated college star. He singlehandedly tanked his WAR in 20 with his baserunning blunders and cost the Sox a game in the ALDS vs the As. So the Sox had moved on in considering him a part of their core. Hopefully for the Cubs sake he retains his bat control. Otherwise there’s no there there. Sub 300 OPS!

The Sox don’t need a 2B. Josh Harrison looks pretty darn good. But you’re right, they might do something at the trade deadline, if necessary. But by then, they should have Giolito, Lynn, Cease, Kopech, Keuchel and Cueto with Vince Velasquez and Reynaldo Lopez as insurance.

Sox fans knew what Madrigal did well and what he struggled with. He’s a guy that’s going to put the ball in play and make contact. He’s going to get some hits. But he’ll never have a good OBP because he doesn’t walk. He has no power and isn’t likely to develop any because he’s really small. He’s also got durability issues because of his size.

Shockingly, he’s not very good defensively. That was the biggest disappointment with him and totally unexpected. He was touted as gold glove-type 2B. Not even close.

He should hit. Give him some time to get adjusted. He has an uncanny ability to make contact in any count, against anyone. But those weaknesses that he has are real, as you’ll see.

The only place Burger can be placed to help you is at a food table. What has he ever proven? THAT is the same type of comment Sox fans have been chirping, in regards to the great Zack Collins experience. Same exact hype that all you Sox fans bought into.
And soon Sheets will find himself in that grouping.

Hype??? Burger was a highly regarded 1st round pick. He is blocked by Yoan Moncada. Burger and Oakland are a perfect match. The Burger kid is a warrior! Battled back from multiple Achilles tears. Oakland can pencil him in for 15 homers and 75 RBI’s for the next 6 years. Burger makes exactly the type of MLB money that Oakland likes to pay. Let’s get Montas done!

Dogbone it’s funny how you evaluate all these White Sox players. We can evaluate the Cubs too. What has Nick Madrigal done? What has Madrigal proven? He can’t hit home runs and right now he can’t even get a hit he’s batting
.091 just came off another 0-4 day. He’s not known for striking out and he’s been striking out so thats alarming. His defense is okay. Madrigal has had 2 major surgeries. Burger might have a better career then Madrigal. Now don’t get me wrong I’m still high on Nick Madrigal and I believe he will eventually come around but again no one knows and you clearly are one that doesn’t know much about baseball.

There are times people must think his insight is either pure hatred towards the White Sox or he is just really stupid! Its sad that people like him can come on here talking nonsense rather than baseball to the business behind it. Then again, its a free country and his name “Dogbone” says a lot about him along with his low IQ.

Nick Madigral is 1 for 15 with a .067 batting average in the first four games of this young season. Madigral doesn’t have the potent line up protecting him with the Cubs like he use to have with the White Sox where he use to see good pitches to hit. FACTS!

No for Montas. Aside from his questionable durability and PED suspension, is the uneven up and down control of the split, his go-to, linked to spider tack. While he adapted and pitched well in a stretch at the end of the year, does one really rely on a guy who can be lights out or scuffle depending upon control of his out pitch? At least with Rodon, his shaky reliability in October was health related. Not sure you want to turn to Montas as one of your big 3 in October.

Pollock like Strasburg is now where he’s always been’ On the injured list. Thus earning them top spots on the ” Comeback Player of the Year” lists. That is, If they ACTUALLY managed to ever come back from an injury. If the Sox resign him, They should pay him a 25 dollar salary, Then pay him for every game he really plays.

The CWS should just hold off and cycle through the Lambert, McClure, Bilous and Finnegans and see if any of them can make a dent and keep you in the game through 4-5 innings. Montas has pitched 100 innings in a season ONCE, lets stop with the big prospect haul requests.

Chisozcity, the starting 1B role might be sooner than you think. Sox have always erred on the side of being a year early in phasing in their successor. The way Konerko first time shared 1b and then pushed Frank to DH. And then picking up Jose to succeed Paulie. See Andrew as the everyday 1b and Jose renewed to be more of a DH and continued mentor for the next wave of kids.

So Chi Sox, you’re saying Bauer wasn’t a mistake? He might be a great P but it really doesn’t matter does it because he’s stupid. He almost cuts his hand off with a drone before the Series against the Cubs. He’s been suspended for most of last year and so far this one. If he never pitches, How good is he really? @chisox That’s a very fair take. You can’t know what’s going to happen with any of these guys. Most of them have huge egos and the potential for off the field trouble. Only a bad signing in hindsight.

But with the hindsight that we have and how he’s making 37M a year, it turned out pretty bad! It’s only right that the Dodgers should be able to get out of paying some (if not all) of that.

I dunno I see lots of ‘great pitchers’ that face the Sox, and then they face the rest of the league and playoff caliber teams that eat the pitcher’s lunch… Doing well against the Sox is no barometer. The Sox have a bad habit of making pedestrian pitchers look amazing. Now is this kid good? We will see in his next starts, but at least the Sox managed to get a couple of key hits to win.

I watched the game, but I do not make assumptions on one game played. Again, the Sox have had a history of young inexperienced pitchers owning them only to watch the rest of the league destroy them (or at least make them look like an average pitcher). Again, the Sox have a history of their hitters not showing up when they need to (look no further than the playoffs last year, and their abysmal record against over .500 teams all of last season)….
Now, the barometer is looking up as the Sox have managed to eke out some key hits and wins against teams that they should be beating if they really are a contender team, especially against teams the Rays but I want to see more data, that’s all.. I have been a fan for far too long to be fooled by fools gold.
Lets also see Brash win some games against other teams (and dominate another ‘best hitting club’ like the Sox) before anointing him a Cy Young winner because he held the Sox to 2 ERs, shall we?
So we will see, but a weeks worth of games (let alone the one you are basing your pitching comments off of) is not enough to make statements like yours…

I think the bigger question is how the Sox conditioning staff keeps their jobs? Sure you have injuries you cannot account for (like knee, elbow, shoulder, injuries etc), but soft tissue issues, like lats, abs, and hamstrings?
C’mon, that’s all conditioning (or lack thereof) especially Moncada, that guy is a walking soft tissue injury but yet still gets injured, I just think that if ol’ Herm Schneider’ (AKA Dr. Pain) was around (or a guy like him) you would not see much of this nonsense.
