1:25pm: It’ll be Lambert starting in place of Giolito this week, GM Rick Hahn tells reporters (Twitter links via Scott Merkin of MLB.com). Hahn added that the Sox are “not necessarily expecting him to go out there and get us deep into the game” but rather to open the game with a few quality innings before turning things over to the ’pen.
10:40am: The White Sox announced Tuesday that right-hander Lucas Giolito and outfielder AJ Pollock have both been placed on the 10-day injured list. Giolito left his season debut with an abdominal strain, and the Sox had already revealed that he’s expected to miss at least two starts. Pollock, meanwhile is dealing with a hamstring strain that forced him from Saturday’s game. The ChiSox recalled right-hander Jimmy Lambert and lefty Anderson Severino from Triple-A Charlotte in a pair of corresponding moves.
Giolito hurled four shutout frames before exiting his debut tilt, and he’ll now be sidelined for at least his next two turns through the rotation. His placement on the 10-day IL is retroactive to April 9, so he’s eligible for return beginning on April 19. Giolito joins right-hander Lance Lynn on the shelf, though Lynn is expected to miss considerably more time than him after undergoing knee surgery.
With their top two starters out of action, the White Sox will likely look to Dylan Cease, Dallas Keuchel, Michael Kopech, Vince Velasquez and Reynaldo Lopez to shoulder the workload in the rotation for the time being. Lambert worked three innings in his lone Triple-A appearance thus far, so he could be an option to provide some length along with Velasquez and Lopez at the back of the rotation. Chicago also inked veteran Johnny Cueto to a minor league deal earlier in the month, but he’s still building up toward game readiness after lingering as a free agent throughout the majority of Spring Training.
It’s not yet clear how much time Pollock will be expected to miss, though it’s certainly worth noting that his placement on the IL is retroactive to April 10. Acquired in a straight-up swap that sent Craig Kimbrel to the Dodgers, the 34-year-old Pollock has gotten out to a 4-for-7 start in his brief White Sox tenure so far. His absence will open the door for some additional at-bats in the outfield for Gavin Sheets, Andrew Vaughn and Adam Engel. Both Sheets and Vaughn were getting some early outfield work in just minutes after the announcement, tweets James Fegan of The Athletic.
Ouch.
Eh, Lucas “sticky stuff” giolito is basically a or a 4 at this point. And pollok is probably depressed that he got shipped form LA to Chicago so he’s taking a quick vacation.
dude had a 2.65 ERA in the second half last year, clearly if he was using it didn’t change anything.
In second half Include his 4 inning choke job in playoffs .
You mad? Clearly you didn’t realize how good Giolito was in the 2nd half of last year and how good he was in the first start of the season before he got pulled. White Sox are 3-1 and should be 4-0. Dodgers are 1-2. I’m sure AJ Pollock is happy being on the best team in baseball
Yep. AJP already said as much- more regular role, heard great things about clubhouse and knows Tony too from AZ.
Yeah, I am sure Pollock recognizes the dynasty that is the White Sox.
Dumb comment.
No news here
Pollack on the IL is still a win. I thought a lut Kimbrel returning to Boston but the guy is so inconsistent. Lights out as good as there ever was or laughable as to how he has an MLB job.
Pollock and the IL, name a more iconic duo.
Pollock on the dl after only 7 AB’s and a big trade. The dude calls the dl home…. Honestly, and joking aside, my mind wonders how great he could have been if he could have stayed healthy more often
He simply has an extended paternity leave no big deal.
As much as I love Pollock, this is why I was happy with the trade for KImbrel. Pollock will hit 280 but will also be out for at least a month or two (if not longer) of the season. If both are healthy, that trade slants towards the White Sox.
The injury history for Pollock allows this trade to even out a bit. And if Kimbrel shows some of his early 2021 form, the trade has to be considered a big win for the Dodgers.
The Sox were never going to get much for Kimbrel. They needed to trade him and the entire league knew it. They were lucky to get someone as good as Pollock tbh, even with his injury history. They just need to accept it was a bad idea to acquire him in the first place and move on.
It was not a bad idea to acquire Kimbrel. He was the last piece in a World Series championship season. It just didn’t work out.. Just because it didn’t work out doesn’t make it a bad idea.
You can only win the championship in that given year and they tried. There is absolutely no guarantee that Madrigal (who was out for the season at the time of the time) is the final piece in the Sox winning it all this year.
Any ape with a few brain cells to rub together could tell you that what Kimbrel did with the Cubs in 2021 was completely unsustainable.
A 3.8% HR/FB rate wasn’t going to continue, nor was the .203 BABIP against him.
I was shocked how quickly he regressed, but it should be a surprise to absolutely nobody that he was as bad as he was.
The trade was at least understandable. Picking up the option was full on stupid.
Picking up the option was not stupid because they were able to trade for a much needed outfield bat for him.
The first sentence of the comment was at least understandable. The second sentence was full on stupid.
Actually, it was a bad idea. And Tony made it worse by stubbornly running him back out there over and over as a setup guy, when he clearly shoulda been used as a platoon closer. Which, again, brings us back to, It WAS a bad trade.
Did you watch Kimbrel pitch last year? Why on Earth would you ever let him close games when you have the best closer in baseball?
I don’t care what inning Kimbrel was used in, he had absolutely no command and looked like a tired pitcher trying too hard.
Out a month or two of season would be just fine. That’s actually probably your average Sox player over last couple years. Par for the course. Man I’d take 120 Starts from the guy I saw first 2 games in a quick second.
Must be a good trade then. The Sox are delighted to get Pollock and get rid of Kimbrel. It solved two problems for them in one move.
And with Pollock, when he eventually comes off the IL, he usually struggles for a month or so
He’s only going to miss five or six games.
I still think this team will be fine. Fortunately it’s early. It’s not uncommon for players to have minor injuries after leaving the warmth of Arizona and Florida then practically overnight playing in temps around thirty degrees cooler.
Both of these guys will be back in no time. Relax.
Also, the Sox weren’t counting on Pollock playing 160 games.
Relax? Whose comment are you replying to? Seem like everyone has similar reactions as you do.
ATHJKOC!!!
Welp, that didn’t take long.
false rumor that made it rounds yesterday was the fake rumor Montas for Sheets. Seriously what crazy fan would go to the length to make up a fake account to push a fake rumor? That guy has mental problems to impersonate a sport writer.
Pollock like Strasburg is now where he’s always been’ On the injured list. Thus earning them top spots on the ” Comeback Player of the Year” lists. That is, If they ACTUALLY managed to ever come back from an injury. If the Sox resign him, They should pay him a 25 dollar salary, Then pay him for every game he really plays.
These guys just sat around on the couch during the lockout.
You did too, so nothing to brag about
Curious if this injury to Giolito gets CWS to be more aggressive in a swap for Montas from OAK.
The CWS should just hold off and cycle through the Lambert, McClure, Bilous and Finnegans and see if any of them can make a dent and keep you in the game through 4-5 innings. Montas has pitched 100 innings in a season ONCE, lets stop with the big prospect haul requests.
This and a recent scouting report detailing his off and on dominance/control linked to his ability to throw the split. In a post spider tack world, questionable whether his good runs are sustainable in the long run, or in the playoffs.
dear goodness everyone, I know Montas is a good young pitcher, but you’re not getting guys like Vaughn or Anderson for him. those guys are younger and more controllable.
You understand trades aren’t made based on value, right?
But they have to be somewhat reasonable and the value has to somewhat close. Oakland is not getting a good, young and controllable MLB player for Frankie Montas. That’s just not happening. The A’s will likely get some prospects.
But they have to be somewhat reasonable and the value has to somewhat close.
Your “window for contention “ is closing rapidly. Plus Giolito wants no part of reupping with this scam organization.
Dogbone you should do your homework on the White Sox roster and their contracts cause you clearly are missing some brain cells if you think their window for contention is closing. You sound really salty.
When was 29 years old considered a “young pitcher”? Maybe if Montas was 25 years old with no PED suspension and with a season where he pitched over 200 innings then talks for him involving Vaughn would be going on!
Why stop the signings with Cuteo? Smardjzja is available from the list of overpaid bad former giants.
not to mention
Jonathan Lucroy
Wilson Ramos
Adam Eaton
Dexter Fowler
Brett Gardner,
Pablo Sandoval
Jake Arrieta
Matt Harvey
Julio Teheran
Cole Hamels
Dellin Betances
Greg Holland
Shelby Miller
just a little tidbit, can’t believe it already been 7 years, in 2015 all these guys were pretty amazing players, and they’ve all fallen so far.
This is what happens when you trade for a 34 yr old injury prone CF to start in RF. So sick of these mediocre roster moves year after year from the White Sox. Either get serious about contending or sell the damn team!
Pollock was going to miss time since his wife was having another baby.
Andrew Vaughn moves one step closer to moving back to the Bay.
Which, karmically, is fair for trading Olson to his hometown.
Athletics’ fans are doing some mind altering drugs to think Vaughn is going to be traded to them.
Sure, they could pick up Vaughn. Who else will the As pony up? Jefferies? Puk?
Pollock was scheduled to take time off anyway because his wife is having a baby. Sox will take the time to get him healthy but with Vaughn hitting he won’t be missed.
Seriously? I like Vaughn a lot, but do you seriously think he’s an everyday starting RF? He should DH until the Sox are prepared to give him the starting 1B role, where he belongs.
Chisozcity, the starting 1B role might be sooner than you think. Sox have always erred on the side of being a year early in phasing in their successor. The way Konerko first time shared 1b and then pushed Frank to DH. And then picking up Jose to succeed Paulie. See Andrew as the everyday 1b and Jose renewed to be more of a DH and continued mentor for the next wave of kids.
He’s already shown he can play a passable LF and RF. The guy’s just a good all around baseball player. He’s actually pretty decent at 3B and 2B, too. And of course he can really hit.
Dodgers FO always seem to know what they’re doing.
their scouting is great and the amount of $ they have allows them to hide their mistakes pretty well
e.g. they’re still paying Trevor Bauer
You seem to be insinuating that Bauer was a mistake. How so? He was, probably still is, one of the best pitchers in baseball.
How good is he if he’s suspended for most of the contract?
Sticky stuff savant, nothing more. Just like Kluber, Bieber, Carrasco, Clevinger….
Well the jury is still out on Bieber, but you get the point.
Well, when a guy doesn’t pitch for you, it’s clearly not a good move, wouldn’t you say?
^I wouldn’t be hitching your wagon to Kimbrel just yet and claiming victory. Kimbrel implodes during the big game and especially the playoffs…
Pollock’s wife is having another child so this gives him time to spend with her.
Pollock’s wife is having another kid because he’s home way more than he’s ever been on the field. She’ll probably start wearing a chastity belt. So Chi Sox, you’re saying Bauer wasn’t a mistake? He might be a great P but it really doesn’t matter does it because he’s stupid. He almost cuts his hand off with a drone before the Series against the Cubs. He’s been suspended for most of last year and so far this one. If he never pitches, How good is he really? I bet if you ask the Dodgers if they could just let him walk with no pay, They’d jump like a Junkyard Dog on a T-Bone.
Ok, fair enough. He’s a loud mouth weirdo. The question remains, how was signing him a mistake? These guys are world class athletes, which means most of them are probably jerks. Aside from that, no front office is going to predict his off the field issues. As the cliche goes, hindsight is always 20-20
@chisox That’s a very fair take. You can’t know what’s going to happen with any of these guys. Most of them have huge egos and the potential for off the field trouble. Only a bad signing in hindsight.
But with the hindsight that we have and how he’s making 37M a year, it turned out pretty bad! It’s only right that the Dodgers should be able to get out of paying some (if not all) of that.
Pollack’s first child was born around three months premature!
Sox right handed hitters had trouble today with a 23 year old rookie with a curveball that wickedly tails away. Most the hits were by lefties. Maguire looked good. Eloy a liability in left on a foul line popup yet can beat out a dp relay throw, go figure. He’s not that dangerous yet at bat.
Brash comes highly touted tho.
Let’s trade for him.then. He had great stuff!
Brash is no Frankie Montas!
Brash is 23, Montas is 29 you are right Montas is an old fart already.
That kid was pretty darn good. He throws upper 90s and has a ridiculous slider. There are going to a lot of hitters, righties and lefties, who have tough days against him. Very impressive.
I dunno I see lots of ‘great pitchers’ that face the Sox, and then they face the rest of the league and playoff caliber teams that eat the pitcher’s lunch… Doing well against the Sox is no barometer. The Sox have a bad habit of making pedestrian pitchers look amazing. Now is this kid good? We will see in his next starts, but at least the Sox managed to get a couple of key hits to win.
You obviously didn’t see the game. Brash is going to be really good. His stuff is electric. Very impressive young pitcher.
Btw, this White Sox team is among the best hitting clubs in baseball.
Other than that, good points. LOL.
I watched the game, but I do not make assumptions on one game played. Again, the Sox have had a history of young inexperienced pitchers owning them only to watch the rest of the league destroy them (or at least make them look like an average pitcher). Again, the Sox have a history of their hitters not showing up when they need to (look no further than the playoffs last year, and their abysmal record against over .500 teams all of last season)….
Now, the barometer is looking up as the Sox have managed to eke out some key hits and wins against teams that they should be beating if they really are a contender team, especially against teams the Rays but I want to see more data, that’s all.. I have been a fan for far too long to be fooled by fools gold.
Lets also see Brash win some games against other teams (and dominate another ‘best hitting club’ like the Sox) before anointing him a Cy Young winner because he held the Sox to 2 ERs, shall we?
So we will see, but a weeks worth of games (let alone the one you are basing your pitching comments off of) is not enough to make statements like yours…
It’s going to be ok. If Gio missing a few starts and Pollock missing a few weeks, in April, prevent us from winning the WS, then this team never had a shot. Let’s see if a few prospects can improve their stock by July.
Rest em up, give the other guys some work.
I think the bigger question is how the Sox conditioning staff keeps their jobs? Sure you have injuries you cannot account for (like knee, elbow, shoulder, injuries etc), but soft tissue issues, like lats, abs, and hamstrings?
C’mon, that’s all conditioning (or lack thereof) especially Moncada, that guy is a walking soft tissue injury but yet still gets injured, I just think that if ol’ Herm Schneider’ (AKA Dr. Pain) was around (or a guy like him) you would not see much of this nonsense.
