The Orioles announced they’ve traded reliever Paul Fry to the Diamondbacks for minor league righty Luis Osorio. Arizona immediately optioned him to Triple-A Reno, and the club had a pair of 40-man roster vacancies after placing Cooper Hummel and Kyle Nelson on the COVID-19 injured list this afternoon.
Baltimore had designated Fry for assignment over the weekend. That marked a fairly swift downturn after the southpaw got off to an excellent start to the 2021 campaign that seemed as if it’d make him a deadline trade chip. From the start of the 2021 season through the All-Star Break, Fry held opposing hitters to a pitiful .210/.326/.218 slash in 33 innings. His 4.09 ERA was fairly ordinary, but he struck out 31% of opposing hitters while inducing grounders on over half the balls in play against him.
Unfortunately, Fry’s performance has taken a sharp downward turn since that point. Going back to the All-Star Break, the Michigan native has an 8.54 ERA in only 26 1/3 frames. Fry has continued to keep the ball on the ground, but his strikeout rate has plummeted to a below-average 22% while his walk percentage has spiked to an untenable 19.7%. The O’s have optioned Fry a couple times in that span and eventually moved on altogether after he allowed nine runs in his 12 frames this year.
It’s possible the Snakes’ acquisition was motivated by Nelson’s loss to the virus list, but that they relinquished a minor league arm would seemingly indicate Fry could hold a 40-man roster spot. Osorio, 19, signed with the D-Backs out of Venezuela. He spent last season in the Dominican Summer League.
It was either Paul Fry or Jim Bakker
They originally traded for Tammy Faye, but they found Jimmy Hoffa under all the make up, ended up a mystery
It was all a ruse hidden under rouge and fake eyelashes! I’d trade them all for Jessica Hahn…
You can’t, she sucks…
80 grade rating, I’m still all in!
Lucky for Jessica, the bottom articles are referring to the “sticky stuff” ban
@Gwynning, you realize we’re in a world of our own?
There’s something there, I just can’t finger it… I gotta trust my scouts on this one. I’m signing Hahn to a 1 year prove-it type deal. The Future Value is low but the bust potential is there.
I love inside jokes I’d love to be a part of one someday
The inside joke is that a televangelist r@ped a woman then paid her hush money. Curly made a joke about how she is glad the “sticky stuff” is banned. Very classless.
However, Curly fails to mention his wife and mother were against the “sticky stuff” ban and swallowed all they could in protest.
Oof that was awful. Jesus was never known for his humor
Well, might as well get an 18 year old lottery ticket. Better than nothing!
Good luck in AZ Paul. That slider is special. Let’s hope the fastball can catch up to it.
Other than the fact he’s already over 19, going on 20…..
Miserable Ed!
Sorry the news is miserable, but at least it is factual.
Dbacks still searching for answers to their bullpen problems. Statistically, this year’s bullpen is as bad as last year’s, although the eyeball test suggests there has been some improvement.
Spin rate. Spin rate? Spin rate! Did the sticky stuff ban have anything to with his 2nd half 2021 decline?
It would make for a good article to see whose spin rates have declined since sticky stuff ban, and any correlation with their performance
Can’t wait till we play the Angels!
Trout will fry us.
Im rooting hard for the D-Backs they just need some peices put together
Reached for comment, Mike Elias stated, “We really liked that he had a lot of “o”‘s in his last name. In fact his last name is “Os” and “orio” which is practically orioles.”
When asked about the young pitcher’s talent, Elias responded, “Well, he’s young.”
Hyde your kids
And Hyde ya husbands cause they trading everybody out here
The O’s are dumb, really really dumb, for real.
some 19 year old with a bunch of o’s in his name is better than the 50k recouped by a waiver claim, i have more faith in this orioles rebuild than the other teardowns around the league
Why?
more of a gut feeling about elias coming over from the astros, i believe they have the best baseball program in the league. i like the internal pitching developments especially and while the position player side looks weak, ill put my trust in elias and that baseball system than any other rebuilding clubs
So Elias came over from an organization that was proven to be cheating. The best baseball program in the league? What…..are you talking about the Astros or the Orioles? Because the situations are completely different.
His goal here is to keep spending way down. He’s not in total control here. It is the same old, same old here in Baltimore.
The internal pitching developments? Like what…who? The best guy they had, John Means, wasn’t even a guy they were high on. It is like they discovered him by mistake, and typical O’s fashion, they broke him.
The position player side looks more than weak. All the current “youngsters” are over 25. All of them are flawed players. None of them have any extended period of success at the MLB level. Once they do, the O’s will trade them rather than pay them.
I’ve given this organization the benefit of the doubt for decades. They don’t get it anymore. They have to prove it to me now. Seeing is believing, and I don’t believe in what I am seeing so far.
Fry told Arizona, don’t you worry about blank, let me worry about blank!
