Yankees Place Josh Donaldson On IL With Shoulder Inflammation

By Darragh McDonald | May 27, 2022 at 5:33pm CDT

The Yankees announced today that third baseman Josh Donaldson has been transferred from the COVID-19 Injured List to the 10-day injured list, retroactive to May 24, due to right shoulder inflammation. While he was on the COVID IL, he wasn’t counting against the team’s 40-man roster, meaning a corresponding move was required in that department, which the club announced as Chad Green being transferred to the 60-day IL.

The news is surely something of a disappointment for the Yankees and their fans. Donaldson, 36, had been on the COVID list for the past few days due to experiencing symptoms. But since he continued to test negative, it seemed possible that he could make a quick return once those symptoms abated. Now it seems he will be out for at least another week due to this shoulder issue. This isn’t the first time that Donaldson has been held back by shoulder inflammation, as the same injury landed him on the injured list for about two weeks while with the Blue Jays in April 2018.

Acquired from the Twins in an offseason trade, Donaldson’s tenure in the Bronx is off to a good start. Through 37 games, he’s hitting .238/.349/.415 for a wRC+ of 130 as the club is currently sitting on a record of 32-13, the best in baseball. Donaldson’s contributions will now continue to be on hold while he recuperates. Manager Aaron Boone told reporters, including Lindsey Adler of The Athletic, that the injury has been bugging Donaldson for a while. He received a cortisone shot this week with the club hopeful he’s not facing an extended absence.

With Donaldson out of action, the logical backup plan would have been to use DJ LeMahieu at third base, though he’s been dealing with left wrist discomfort and hasn’t appeared in a game since Monday. Adler relays word from Boone that LeMahieu’s condition has improved enough that he could appear in the game at some point tonight, though he isn’t in the starting lineup. Marwin Gonzalez has been getting the starts at the hot corner lately and figures to do so until LeMahieu and/or Donaldson are eligible to return.

The transfer of Green to the 60-day IL is a mere formality, as it was announced earlier this week that he will require Tommy John surgery. That will keep him out of action for the remainder of this year and at least part of next season as well.

Don’t screw around with LeMahieu’s wrist. Don’t risk aggravating it by making him swing the bat before the wrist is healed completely. He has four more months ahead of him.

Ouch, that’s arguably worse. May I ask, as one with Native American heritage, why did you pick Jacoby FPG, huh?????!!!!!! Because he’s Native American?!

The Yankees are playing more like the Rays than the Rays are.

This is a very odd year in MLB……

There are around 8 very good teams.

There is a small middle class of teams – Jays, Cardinals, Twins that can make the playoffs but are hardly in the top bracket.

Then there are somewhere around 19 teams that have so many weaknesses that they can’t be taken seriously this year – all their fans can hope is that they put together a core and do some things in the coming offseason to compete in 2023.

Not sure I’ve seen this in quite some time.

        • RazorRamonie

Incorrect 55% of the Yankees runs this season have come as a result of the long ball higher rate in the league by a far margin

        • bradthebluefish

That’s the biggest thing that’s surprising. More small ball play. I love it. It’s exactly how you’re able to beat teams when their aces are on the mound.

        • Samuel

          RazorRamonie;

          Not incorrect.

Did you know that the Rays have been long ball hitting for 2-3 years now? They hardly pay small ball offensively.

The Rays infield defense this year has been atrocious. It’s cost them numerous games and messed up the pitching staff. Their OF defense is OK, their catching defense is not particularly good. Mostly what’s happened is that they’re using analytics to switch infielders each game to such a point that they don’t have a real ML 1B; while Walls and Franco that can both play SS and 3B are moving around each game (with Diaz going between 3B and 1B) and all 3 of them are playing subpar as the positions are so different that they can’t get into a rhythm. They also play around at 2B with Lowe, Brujan, Walls, and Paredes so there’s simply no stability in the infield.

The Yankees found a SS as well as 2 Catchers and let them play. Furthermore while Judge is not really a ML CF, they start him there then bring in Hicks or Florial in the later in innings and move Judge to RF where he belongs.

The Rays are totally out of kilter. They got too cute this year.

    • Fink Ployd

I don’t think so. He’s too valuable & too costly to just write-off. Even politics isn’t enough for Halbert Moneyhands to swallow $25M over two years.

My thoughts: They are using this to buy separation from the TA incident to let JD heal and let other news cycles take the place of this. They’re letting time & distance come between JD, TA, MLB, & the media until the short attention spans of everyone turn to something else.

Then, when he returns, it’s an old story, nothing to disrupt the clubhouse, draw attention away from the Yankees performance, & co-opt the news of the Yankees.

clip, all good points. And the Yankees shouldn’t be surprised or complain, didn’t they bring Donaldson in for exactly this reason, that’s what Cashman said at his press conference they wanted him because he had an edge. So it would be hypocritical of them, or not the first time for them, to complain about it now. Although the truth is that was just spin, they only brought donaldson in and his salary because it’s the only way they could get a cheap shortstop and catcher.
And ironically we still have not seen the catcher this year and we probably won’t, and they could’ve spent the 25 million on a real shortstop ,with lindor and Correa Are not doing too badly on their respective teams.

Yeah, his hitting has suffered a bit – it was a painfully slow start. But he was starting to get his timing down and we could see the results. He was still a threat, but the biggest thing was that he had several hits in clutch spots, winning a couple games in walk-off fashion.

Whether he’s racist or thought he was being clever towards someone he simply doesn’t get along with, that “Jackie” comment sealed Donaldson’s fate.

I’m not sure I think Donaldson is racist or just crass and petty, but he definitely made himself persona non grata to the organization and his teammates, past present and future.

If he isn’t racist I hope there’s a way for him to smooth this over and move on. If he is- good riddance.

May he enjoy earning $43M to go away and do nothing if this is the inauspicious end of his career.

That being said he wasn’t being racist and it was just a reach by an old drunk trying to act morally superior and clear his name after an embarrassing DUI. Larussa really turned this into a circus by making a ridiculous accusation with no evidence.

Thanks for the link. Donaldson’s tweet-liking history adds some missing context. Given his past disposition to fight with and insult others without apparent regard for color or ethnicity, it’s hard to say with certainty that he’s a racist. But when he “likes” racists on a public forum, that puts some holes in his cover.

Is there such a thing as a reformed racist? Absolutely. Gov. George Wallace was the national spokesman for racism and a presidential candidate before he got shot and crippled by a would-be assassin in 1972. Another candidate for the presidency, black congresswoman Shirley Chisolm, went to see him in the hospital after the shooting, shocking her black supporters. In 1979, George visited a famous black church, Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, as described by his daughter:

‘On a Sunday in 1979, Daddy’s arrival to this church was unannounced and unexpected. But for an attendant rolling his wheelchair to the front of this sanctuary, he was alone. What the congregation must have thought when he said, “I’ve learned what suffering means in a way that was impossible. I think I can understand something of the pain that black people have come to endure. I know I contributed to that pain and I can only ask for your forgiveness.” As he was leaving the church, the congregation began singing “Amazing Grace.”’

        https://wapo.st/3NGWKWx

As a Christian, it behooves me never to deny another person the hope of redemption. Donaldson is on a team whose leader has black ancestry and whose manager has two black sons by adoption. If he arrived in New York as a racist, maybe he’ll be a better man when he’s done here. One can hope.

Fink, I am confused on how his “likes” of the Joe Rogan scenario, or the mini-diatribe on the “thin blue line” sticker has any credence to JD being a racist. I admit ignorance on which Rogan scenario this is referring to because I don’t listen to his podcast. The thin blue line sticker? Yeah there are really bad police. That doesn’t mean you can’t support them, it’s not mutually exclusive.

I support them, and I know of very, very corrupt police. I’ve endured a situation with corrupt police, but that doesn’t mean I don’t support them overall, or down those who support them. That was just a really odd note to insert in the middle.

I just know the way the world is headed, so it’s not a surprise. I also know where we will be at the end.

Wait so because he’s an angry guy and likes a few tweets that defend Joe Rogan after heavily edited videos of him saying the “N” word pushes the needle here? And foe reference, no, I am not a Joe Rogan subscriber or apologist.

Answer my question here. If a person who is non-white calls TA “Jackie” are we having this conversation now? It’s a simple yes or no.

I’m not on a witness stand and you’re not the D.A., so I don’t have to give you a yes or no answer. In fact, I don’t have to give you an answer at all, so dial back on the order-giving, counselor.

I’ll oblige anyway, because I want to.

If another black player called him that, it would make no sense for Anderson to infer any racist intent, would it? If a non-white player of another minority race, say Latino, called him that, it might have some racial undertones or it might not — same as Donaldson saying it.

As for Rogan, here’s what he had to say last February:

“Somebody made a compilation of every time I said that word over 14 years and they put it on YouTube, and it turned out that was racist as f*** – even to me!

“I’m me and I’m watching it saying, ‘stop saying it!’ I put my cursor over the video and I’m like, ‘four more minutes?!'”

The issue isn’t whether Rogan is a racist. It’s that he knows racists like what he says on his show (same as Howard Stern, his Robin fig leaf notwithstanding) and he capitalizes on it. A person can exploit other people’s racism without being a racist himself; but since the effect of his behavior is to promote and/or validate racism, it matters less whether he’s racist himself or not. Arguably it’s worse, because he knows what he’s doing is wrong, but he does it anyway because it profits him.

If you’ve never seen the Hitchcock film “Rope,” I recommend it. In an usual role for him, Jimmy Stewart plays a cynic whose iconoclastic pronouncements like “The lives of inferior beings are unimportant” inspire a couple of younger admirers to murder a man in cold blood. When he realizes what they’ve done, he protests vehemently that they misunderstood him. But the victim is still dead.

        • Yankee Clipper

Wow, I had no clue that happened! As I told you, I was completely ignorant of the Rogan issue. Thanks for the clarification on that. That’s terrible, man. Yikes!

Yeah, I could see where JD argues he’s “liking” the pro-free speech advocates, regardless of how insulting said speech is; nevertheless, when you put that in context with this, it is *not* a good look. The inference can easily & readily be taken that he is supporting or advocating pro-racist content.

This all goes back to one verse: Matthew 7:12 admonishes, “Therefore, whatever you men want to do to you, do also to them, for this is the law and the prophets.” NKJV

I wish I had acted that out for my entire life; how much easier my life would’ve been.

        • Fink Ployd

          Me too, Clipper.

I take comfort from the parable of the prodigal son. All the sins of the wayward son couldn’t cut him off from his father’s love.

“As a father shows compassion to his children,
so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him.
          For he knows our frame;
he remembers that we are dust.” – Psalm 103

I can’t judge the state of anyone’s heart or soul, and it’s not my job. Even in the case of Rogan’s slurs, I shouldn’t have said with certainty that he knows he’s exploiting racism for profit. Maybe he’s not bright enough to reason that he’s appealing to racists — although, realistically, he’d have to be pretty dense not to realize it, and he doesn’t seem to be that stupid. But “seem to be” isn’t the same thing as “is” or “isn’t.” Same goes for Donaldson and Anderson — and anyone.

“For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”

As with anybody, far be it from me to deny Rogan the possibility of changing for the better when his faults are brought to his attention, as they have been. I’ve got the plank in my own eye to worry about.

It’s my feeling that racism — fear and hatred of the “other” who’s different — is a natural failing of humans to a degree, and I don’t know of any race or culture that’s without it. It’s just one more thing for fallen humans to work on.

Somebody said “The road to Hell is paved with good intentions,” but I don’t believe that. I think that road is paved with bad intentions. Having good intentions and failing to realize them is better than bad intentions, all day, every day. Getting up again after each fall and struggling on won’t put anyone on the wrong road.

          Okay, back to baseball!

        • Yankee Clipper

Awesome! Totally agree. And, speaking of baseball, man, Gleyber is looking good at the plate! I’m pleasantly surprised. Could this be the return of Gleyber?! I hope so. All the naysayers all along said he was finished at, what, 24? No way, just needed time, proper guidance, & patience.

I hope he’s back – what a huge boon (pun intended) to the offense! Plus, his defense at second (minus a couple mental errors) has been really, really good. Miggy looked pretty good too. He’s hitting line drives to oppo, that’s a good look for him. His swing is really level and he’s letting the ball get in deep and hitting it hard. And, as we said before, his defense has been night and day (like that diving catch!).

Tallion has been incredible, so incredible it’s hard to believe he’s really flown under the radar, as far as MLB pitchers go. He’s been tremendous, for the most part.

Last, it was really good to see that Carp still has some power left in the tank. He absolutely crushed that ball to RF.

        • Fink Ployd

I was delighted at Carp’s bomb, of course. I compared him to Roogie previously.

          “Why’d they get this guy?”

          Boom!

          “That’s why.”

Here’s hoping he’s more lightning in a bottle.

I’m with you on Gleyber. He sure rebounded well from his earlier hiccups on the field; some really nice plays last night. I hope his homer doesn’t make him pull-happy. Like Paulie says, he’s best when he goes to right field and up the middle.

The Yankee rotation has gone above and beyond. When the guy with the highest ERA in your rotation is Gerrit Cole, you’re probably doing okay.

Gotta run now. Good talking to you, as always. Later, my brother.

Like I said when the Yankees got off to a blistering start….Cashman had a horrible off-season. Relying on a washed up 3b, a DFA caliber center fielder and a left fielder who will be out of baseball in the next 3 years for 1/3 of your lineup is a joke. There are already huge injury concerns with Judge and Stanton so this team was already tight on depth in their lineup.

Imagine if we had prospects to call up to fill in the gap. Oh right that isn’t important with the Yankees brand of baseball they can just bring in old past their prime vets.

The question is does Cashman get fired before or after the Mets take over NY? I can’t believe nobody can see this team getting old and stale and it’s leaders being perfectly okay with just making the playoffs.

I understand your points (my concerns as well during the offseason), and your frustration; BUT, they are in first place, they battered the Rays yesterday, they punished the O’s, who could swing the balance of first place by season’s end.

Blin7y, & Ducky we’re pretty consistent in their support of Cashman’s moves. RobM was fairly neutral, depending on the move, but was adamant that time to discern the effectiveness of the moves was necessary.

So, I implore you, fellow Yankee fan, don’t do this emotional roller coaster ride! Be patient, let the season play. It will prove Cash a genius (great for us), or prove him a complete doofus.

Either way, the roster is what it is until the trade deadline. Gallo is here for this year. Donaldson here for two. That’s a done deal, man. But our SP is second to none, our BP is as good as it gets considering the injuries it’s suffered.

We are lucky. Look at the ChiSox. They have a good team on paper & they suuuuuck. They’re faltering bad. Look at the Red Sox. They’re going through a mini-retooling, losing some top players in the process, & they’re struggling bad. Look at the Rays. For all the bragging their fans consistently do about how much better a team they are with operating on 10% of the budget, or whatever, they’re getting hammered at times too, like yesterday.

Fear not clipper, I never give up on this team and pull for them until the last out of the season. It’s just frustrating seeing the obvious issues with this team before the season that could have easily been address by just bringing in a capable LF and CF, they didn’t have to be stars just good defenders with some intricate tools on the offensive side, and also giving this team some depth after battling injuries year after year.

Honestly I think Andujar will eventually take over left and provide enough offensively to carry the load. But the frustrating part is he should have been in LF since the minors and not learning it on the fly at the MLB level. Still have big hope for him.

          Yanks4Life,
I agree with everything you said! Like Clipp says, We’ll see. I don’t think they are looking to trade Donaldson. I feel strongly that they would trade Gallo in a minute, but there is obviously no market.

        • Yankee Clipper

Yeah, Y4L22: I hear you, man. It can get frustrating. It’s like these gaping holes we see, coupled with a seemingly simple solution, ie CF/LF, & we seem to whiff….big time.

I still don’t get the Hicks thing. Fink said he generally supports Cashman, but that’s the one extension he still can’t grasp. He’s obviously an intelligent dude, & very adept at all-things-Yankees. That’s one I think most of us scratch our heads with. Hicks is just terrible. At least I understand Gallo – he’s a stat guy, a nerd’s hero. A desk jockey’s computer entry dream! But Hicks? What in the world were they looking at?

Anyway, he’s going to be frustrating the lot of us. When I watch the games with my young son I go off on tangents about all the things Hicks does wrong at the plate…..every time. He’s probably sooooo tired of hearing it. Now, it’s in the field & on occasional base running gaffes too.

I will still never understand the reluctance to fill SS. Unless they plan on T. Turner as a fallback this offseason if the prospects continue negative trends.

But, again, I’m trying my level-best to be patient with them. Cash has been largely successful with his marching orders & getting overall team achievements per season (postseason).

But, we are with you, my friend. We see it too. Each Gallo whiff. Each Hicks overswing. Each Booner blunder.

      • Yanks4life22

Amen Clip I can’t argue with anything you said. Also may analytics be dammed it always comes down to pitching. And honestly that is why I really do have confidence in this team. Like I said they don’t need all stars in LF and CF, just hard nosed players. With a staff like this we don’t need to out slug teams. Timely and situational hitting will be crucial for them going forward.

clip, gallo is less than replacement level, I don’t expect any improvement.a team of psychoanalysts wouldnt hell at this point. Since he’s only owed 6 million, I could see Cashman move him at the trade deadline to a small market team perhaps which would be more suited to him, if he kicked in a few million.Anduhar can take his spot.Hicks we are stuck with , he’s owed considerably more money, but he could be relegated to the bench and we could acquire someone better.

Doc: This is a really good read on the situation. I hadn’t considered how little he’s owed because that opens a lot of doors – he can go anywhere for that amount. Good thinking.

Hicks is owed about $40M from what I gather, and they aren’t kicking that loose. But, yeah, he’s a fourth OFer at best. In fact, Boone said Hicks’ poor offense is NOT impacting his defensive play……what?! Then, he just sucks? He’s stupid? He’s lazy? I don’t get it. If his offense isn’t impacting his defense, and his defense is trending negatively, what in the world are you seeing, Booner? What’s the reason, the solution, the action, or response? What; Let him go he’ll figure it out?

I’m lost on Hicks, man. I was critical toward the end with Sanchez, but I never advocated for the Yankees to cut him loose. But, I don’t see any value in Hicks, at all. He should be sent to AAA or somewhere not on the 26-man (barring injury).

It’s possible to be sick with the flu or some other virus and to have an inflamed shoulder simultaneously. He’s had shoulder inflammation before, as the article says, and he was playing through it when he got sick. They said he was given IV’s for the sickness. Often that’s for dehydration from diarrhea and hurling a lot. I take them at their word that he and Higgy and Gallo were too sick to play.

Well, it is a bit paradoxical that LaRussa was the first to use the term, given his age & the likelihood of what he saw/participated in as a player in the 70s. I’m sure this was very, very tame compared with what was said/heard in his days.

Nonetheless, it doesn’t mean he was wrong. I don’t think he did it with any calculated intent. I believe it was an emotional response from him, probably reading the situation at the time.

Either way, it *is* a “racial thing” now, so we must deal with that. Whether it was in fact racist or not, or whether it was intended to be or not, the fact is that it’s being interpreted that way by swaths of people. So, it’s a problem – a problem for MLB, a problem for JD, & a problem for NYY.

After all, the latter is only owed the remainder of 10 million, for this year, whenever they decide to move on from him.
