Padres To Acquire Brandon Drury

By Darragh McDonald | August 2, 2022 at 4:00pm CDT

The Padres are acquiring Brandon Drury from the Reds, according to Ken Rosenthal and C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic. Prospect Victor Acosta is going to Cincinnati, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

The Padres have seemingly been at the center of all the activity at this year’s deadline, extending Joe Musgrove, acquiring Josh Hader, sending Eric Hosmer to the Red Sox and making perhaps the most impactful baseball trade of all time, acquiring Juan Soto and Josh Bell for a pile of prospects.

The Reds, too, have been busy, sending Luis Castillo to the Mariners, Tyler Mahle to the Twins and Tommy Pham to the Red Sox. Now the two clubs have aligned on a deal that will send Drury to San Diego.

Drury, 29, showed enough promise in his early years with the Diamondbacks that he cracked Baseball America’s top 100 list in 2016 and then was traded to the Yankees after the 2017 season. Unfortunately, this was the beginning of a miserable three-year stretch wherein Drury struggled mightily with the Yanks and then the Blue Jays. He dealt with various injuries and struggled to produce when healthy, eventually getting designated for assignment at the end of the 2020 season.

The Mets took a flier on him last year, which worked out well, as Drury hit .274/.307/.476 in a bench role. That production was 14% above league average, by measure of wRC+. Despite that solid work, he was designated for assignment again at the end of the season.

The Reds brought Drury aboard on a minor league deal, which could hardly have gone any better. Drury is having a career year, already having hit 20 home runs and producing an overall batting line of .274/.335/.520 for a wRC+ of 132. He’s also done it while bouncing all around the diamond, playing mostly third base but also seeing time at the other three infield positions and right field this year.

It seems likely that the Padres want Drury to fill a super utility role on the team, bouncing around to various positions based on who needs a day off. The regular infield lineup would likely see Josh Bell at first, Jake Cronenworth at second, Ha-Seong Kim at shortstop and Manny Machado at third. When Fernando Tatis Jr. eventually returns from his injury, the picture will get a little more crowded, but the Padres also cleared out their usual designated hitter by including Luke Voit in the Soto deal.

In exchange, the Reds are getting Acosta, an 18-year-old switch-hitting shortstop. He had an excellent debut in affiliated ball last year, slashing .285/.431/.484 in the Dominican Summer League for a 153 wRC+ and adding 26 stolen bases. He has slumped a bit this year, hitting .243/.346/.360 in the Arizona Complex League for a 99 wRC+. He is still just 18, however, and was considered one of the better prospects in the San Diego system coming into today.

Right, the Padres starting pitching is dogged.

They should have traded for Rodon and/or Pablo Lopez, they would have been in a much better position to win a playoff series.

Not sure what you are talking about. Padres have a top 3 starting pitching staff in the NL and top 5 in baseball.

They just added Hader to the back end of the bullpen and have Pomeranz returning in a week so the bullpen is solid.

Musgrove is their only ace, Dharvish hasn’t pitched well in the playoffs historically, Blake Snell was ruined when you pulled him from his no hitter still resents the org for that one. Clevinger hasn’t been as sharp as he was in Cleveland, and Manea is a back of the rotation starter.

Not a bad a staff, far away from what the Mets or the Astros have in place. The Brewers have a better staff. The Dodgers. If Max Meyer doesn’t go down and Lopez sticks around I’d take the Marlins. The Braves are better with Fried and Kyle Wright. I like Nola and Wheeler in Philly too. In the playoffs it comes down to your top three.

Blake Snell was one of the best pitchers in MLB later in the year last year. He has turned it on again recently. His playoff ERA is 2.83. You made sure to mention that Darvish is bad in the playoffs but what, accidentally glossed over the fact that Snell has traditionally dominated in the postseason? I’m sure that was just a mistake.

Idk, Blake Snell has had a a few good starts in July but he walked six in a bad loss not too long ago, walked in two runs. It was a bad start. I like Blake Snell I thought he was the best pitcher before Musgrove had his ascension, Snell was great at the end of last season, and then they pulled him from a no hitter and crushed him. He is probably over it, might never get over it, it’s that creeping thing with a pitcher that will sit with you for a decade maybe the rest of his life. Managers don’t think that a no-hit bid is important these days, those games are important when your a pitchers it’s a team game but pitchers have blue blood.

Spencer Strider had 13ks only 3 hits allowed, Braves have three aces. But I thought about it, would you rather have Charlie Morton in game four or Mike Clevinger and I’d go with Clevinger, so the Padres have some depth in the rotation. It’s just that their top three are not the nuts like the Astros or the Braves, or even the Marlins who have Braxton Garrett up, 13k’s tonight.

I thought about it though, good trade for the Padres they have a real shot at winning it, that lineup is nice, their pitching is better than the Yankees, and now they can hit with them.

But the Astros, Dodgers and Braves are the teams to be and the Mariners if they let Gilbert and Kirby throw into the playoffs have a shot with Castillo and Robbie Ray, should be a good show in October.

For their number 6 prospect. The Padres are all in. What will their farm be ranked tomorrow? This is the most “all in” I’ve ever seen. Granted with a deep farm, those ranked below those traded might still be better than many other’s but if they don’t win, they will be forced to trade payroll by 24.

Preller is trying to save his job. For all the hype the last three years the team and it’s payroll is basically a runaway train. I mean they are on manager number three since 2019 and have never won more than 80 games in all of Preller’s time there.

They no longer had a deep farm before even the Hader trade. Their overall system was mid tier before and only because it was top heavy. They will be in the bottom 5 at best now.

You guys are funny. Part of a system’s purpose of the farm is to develope trade fodder for the positions of need. Preller had the pieces to get Soto and Bell that the Nats wanted. All the other interested teams whiffed.

I’m a Padres fan and I disagree. Padres have the bigger names, but they don’t have the more complete roster, nor do they have the 12 game lead. These trades were purely about getting the wildcard and then hoping to do the business in the lottery that is the playoffs. One step at a time. Next year, if they have luck with injuries, we can talk about dethroning the Dodgers. Before then the Dodgers have earned the right to sit at the top of the pile.

Doesn’t mean they win the division or anything else, but that’s a freakin’ monster of a team down there. They already had the best rotation in the NL this side of a healthy Mets.

The dodgers are deeper than SD especially at pitching. Tatis, Machado, and Soto are a great top 3 but so are Mookie, Freddie, and Trea.
And LA still has a stacked farm system to call on for injury replacements.

Agree. Tatis to the OF only made sense when RF was a hole. He’ll play mostly short, maybe some 3rd, and DH.

Really like the flexibility of the revamped roster. Three deep with legitimately good / great players at 2b, SS, and 3b. Bell, Machado, Soto, and Tatis can rotate through DH to keep them fresh and there’s not a weak hitter in the bunch. If Myers finds his stroke again and Grish’s recent hot streak is the start of him remembering how to play….very nice.

One of the things that drives me nuts on this board is a sole focus on world series. I mean if the Padres have really good to great teams for 5-10 years but never win a Ws, thats still an awesome outcome. Of course, you want to win a title but mlb playoffs esp. now w 12 teams are a crapshoot. But having a fun team w great players to watch is great.

The goal of a team is to provide compelling entertainment and to win and SD is doing everything to meet that while also playing in a tv market equivalent to Pittsburgh.

I agree. As a Braves fan, I had lots of fun years in the 90’s and early 2000’s watching very competitive teams excel each year. Some years they went deep into the playoffs, even the World Series. Was 1995 the only successful year? No.

If the Braves make the playoffs and perform decently this year, but ultimately fail to repeat, will I be disappointed? No, not really. I can’t really expect them to repeat knowing how crazy the postseason outcomes usually are.

The Padres are trying to build a winning team and making a lot of splashy moves. I can only imagine how excited their fans must be today. I wish them the best of luck – unless they match up with the Braves down the line.

Um…comparing the San Diego market with its well above average annual income and absence of any other major competing sports franchises with the situation in Pittsburgh is a bit disingenuous, no?

I do wholeheartedly agree with the sentiment vis-a-vis the World Series, though. Teams should aspire to be continuously competitive, not shoving in all their chips on the hope of a glorious one-and done. Ask Royals fans if one ring makes up for decades of pain before and, now, after.

Getting Soto is great but they just put an all in bet to win a WS within 2 years and if they don’t it will be a total failure. Would have thought with Manny and Tatis locked up for the next decade you could afford to be patient, but Preller has 0 patience for prospects.

Drury looked good in limited ABs with the Mets last year and carried that over to this season. Good job by the Reds to get anything of value out of a guy they picked up off the street this winter, but I think he still hits well with San Diego as a utility depth guy.

You’re not getting respect because you keep trying to take short cuts to winning a championship. You want it quick and easy instead of building a club the right way. Furthermore, your organization will be in shambles in a few years. There’s no honor in doing things the easy way. Any jack ass can make flashy trades, but does it lead to long term winning? Is it good for the health of your organization in the future?
You probably cheer when a politician creates a big project that’s all shiny and fun, then you realize you will have to pay higher taxes and it really wasn’t worth it.

So they had a top ranked farm system for years. Built it from the ground up and used those players to benefit the big league team. How is that a short cut?

They had a top ranked farm system because they pretty much sucked and had very high draft choices for multiple years….then they brought in the Rock Star GM who crows about his farm system but never dips down into it to use those players…he just trades them all for $multii million dollar veteran players…..Pads fans are lucky that the owners are willing to put up with a constant change of the roster year after year that continues to sky rocket upwards in cost…….don’t blame chasing a WS title, but you have to wonder what will be left afterwards…..see the Chicago Cubs for a glimpse into the future Pads fans.

          Change year after year?

          On this date in 2020,
Tatis, Machado, Cronenworth, Profar, Myers, Grisham all started that day. They are all still with the team playing a significant part.

Mejia, Garcia, and Pham were the other starters. Mejia was traded for Snell, Garcia retired, and Pham stayed in SD for one more year before leaving in free agency.

Davies was the starting pitcher that day. He was traded for Darvish.

It doesn’t look like we have constant change year after year to me.

It looks more like upgrading at positions of needs.

“Instead of building a club the right way.” Funny. The Padres have been a small market team trying to build a WS champ with zero money for their entire existence until the last 5 years. They have seen the Yankees, Dodgers, Giants and Red Sox buy championship after championship while the Padres have fire sales! Now they finally get to compete and you are mad at them because they “didn’t do it the right way”? Please!

I don’t get al the Preller, shocking actually. If I’m a player, fan, etc. of the Padres org or baseball in general AJ is not scared to place his huevos on the table. It’s what leaders do, they make the hard calls, some lead to the fall, but only time will tell. Huge fan of Preller and the Padres quest for a ring.

“The most impactful baseball trade of all time”?

    Huh?

I thought the Red Sox dealt Babe Ruth to the Yankees.

The Reds dealt Frank Robinson to the Orioles.

The White Sox dealt Fernando Tatis Jr. to the Padres.

Can we wait and see how this designated hitter-to-be does with the Padres first?

Padres pitching is most certainly of playoff quality, bordering on elite. The SP leads the league in quality starts, even with the gradual lengthening of Clevinger and Snell. They can’t match the Braves and Mets RP, but bringing in Hader, Pomeranz, P. Johnson and Suarez in August will sure fix the pen woes.

A for SD. A nice prospect but not elite yet, tons of projecting. A bargain for this deadline. For a heck of a bat.

C for CIN. They did well. This is a win win trade. Prospect is just so young and far away. Only 1 prospect.

This signing is probably due to Grisham not performing well, and needing a platoon for CF, and also a lack of a backup 1B for which I presume Myers will now be at after Hosmer. Drury covers both CF and 1B. Still don’t like the trade though since Drury’s stats this season seems fluky and unsustainable based on his track record.

I predict the Padres will fall right on their faces. Preller thinks acquiring a bunch of all stars will win a championship. Baseball is a team game and chemistry matters. It’s also fiscally irresponsible and unsustainable. It’s kind of a metaphor for California – people living above their means who come crashing down. Glitz and style over substance.

The only examples of WS contending teams without many stars with big salaries might be the Astros and Braves. The Dodgers and Mets have 8 guys making over $10 million a year, the Yankees, Padres and Phillies have 7. Are you saying the Pads can’t win a championship by paying stars because the Dodger/Yankee model has a proven history of not winning? Bah!

I’m not saying I wouldn’t be excited if I were a Padres fan (I would be), but you should be aware that winning the trade deadline means virtually nothing.

Here’s who ESPN (I know, I know) declared the “winners” of the past 5 trade deadlines:

    2021 – LAD
    2020 – SD
    2019 – HOU
    2018 – WAS
    2017 – LAD

None of them won the title that year.

And how did the eventual champs fare in the annual Winners and Losers column?

    2021 – Braves (#2 biggest winner)
2020 – Dodgers (not listed as winner or loser)
2019 – Nationals (“did ok but not as good as the Braves”)
2018 – Red Sox (LOSERS “for not helping the bullpen”)
2017 – Astros (LOSERS “for not getting more pitching” — in fairness, they got JV later that season)

So, it’s exciting, but it doesn’t mean much come October.

When Drury sits on the bench 4 games out of 6, his skills that led to the trade will certainly diminish……his rise in offense certainly was tied to playing every day…..this super utility role is a real question mark…..to say nothing of what his defense will look like with 3-4 gloves in his locker…….ROCK STAR GM does it again!…..Preller is the Dave Dombrowski (albeit the titles) of the NL West.

You can add all the players you want, but that doesn’t mean they play together well. Look at how the Dodgers spending 200-300 million a year turns out most of the time. Or the Mets back when they were spending like a drunken sailor.

However, specifically regarding the actual big league roster..haven’t they added more than they subtracted? And if Tatis comes back that’s another one they have to make room for.
