A’s Designate Vimael Machín For Assignment

By Darragh McDonald | December 12, 2022 at 5:00pm CDT

The A’s have designated infielder Vimael Machín for assignment, reports Martín Gallegos of MLB.com. Machín is a casualty of today’s blockbuster deal that sent Sean Murphy to Atlanta with five players going to Oakland.

Machín, 29, came over to the A’s by way of the Rule 5 draft, being plucked from the Cubs in 2019. Since then, he has played in 112 big league games with the A’s over the past three seasons. He hasn’t hit much in that time, as his career batting line currently sits at .208/.290/.261 for a wRC+ of 66. He’s fared much better in the minors though, having hit .307/.394/.470 over the past two seasons. The Las Vegas Aviators play in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League, but that production was still 18% above league average, as evidenced by his 118 wRC+.

Defensively, Machín brings a lot of versatility to the table, having played all four infield positions in the majors, though most of that has been at third base. In the minors, he’s also had some brief time in the outfield and even in both ends of the battery.

The A’s will now have one week to work out a trade or else put Machín on waivers. He was outrighted in April but selected back onto the club’s roster in June. By virtue of that previous outright, he would have the right to elect free agency if he were to clear waivers. However, given his versatility and strong offensive work in the minors, it’s possible another team could put in a claim. He still has two option years remaining and could thus be kept in the minors as depth once the season begins.

Only a casualty of the trade? He’s a casualty of his offensive prowess.

        Who’s your Team statman?

Let me guess, the SF Giants?

You mad that the A’s have Won more Chips in the Bay Area since both teams started sharing the Region in 1968 ?

Actually, the A’s have Won more Chips since both Teams moved to the West Coast, even though the Giants have been around for 10 years longer and spend twice the amount of money on their Team.

Is that why you Hate/Resent the A’s so much ?

You seem to go out of your way to post the same One-liner response every day.

@dogbone:Exactly what I was thinking. With Reyes and Machin manning the IF, the Sox are going all the way! To a bonafide AAA team.

He was pesky against the Astros last year. Seemed like he was always on base.

The A’s tried to tease us saying Machin picked up a heavier bat and will result in more power. Other than a few doubles, I didn’t see this supposed “power”

Also, I would call a .300 on base percentage as him “always on base”

          LMAO

I guess if you can consider a .154 average and a .211 OBP “always on base”…

I’m not an A’s fan and only really paid attention to them when they played the Astros. I have no idea what the guy did the rest of the time. Sounds like he pretty much sucked, but it seemed like he was on base a lot when they played each other.. It was enough where I’d think, “damn, not that guy again.”

We need a longer look at some other prospects and he’s ultimately a third baseman that doesn’t hit for power or average. He had plenty of chances and could probably benefit from some new batting coaches and trainers, win-win for both sides really.

I don’t care anymore! This was a garbage trade! What happened to asking for the moon?! Instead, we got an old trash backup catcher who the A’s are on the hook for 4.5M in 23 and 4.5m in 24, two 50 grade SP’s who are uninspiring, a 45 grade OF who only offers speed, and a 45 grade pitcher.

    I’m done with the A’s!

You should really be more excited about Muller, Tarnok, and Salinas. They’re all extremely talented pitchers, with Tarnok and Salinas having some real upside.

Salinas couldn’t be hit last season until he started to wear down a bit, he’s a strikeout machine, and he has a ton of upside regardless of his FV…

Tarnok is also very raw, but very good for as inexperienced as he is. He’s only gotten better and better as he’s climbed the ladder, and his best days are still ahead of him. If you watch him pitch, and see his pure stuff, you will change your tune.

Muller is also ML ready, and he was on pace to have a breakout season this year. He struggles with his command from time to time, due to his size, but when he’s on, he’s a bona-fide number 2..

I cannot speak for the Brewers prospect, because Idk enough about him, but you should be more excited about the talent level of the pitchers you got from the Braves.

Well, Muller was their #1 prospect and has a good minor league track record. Maybe he indeed becomes a decent middle of the rotation SP. Tarnok has an iffy scouting report, so I’m not sure what to think of him. Salinas is a flamethrower that’s for sure but was also wild. He did an ok job when promoted to A+, so maybe he becomes a decent RP in the future.

It’s The Ruiz and Pina additions that really erk me. Out of all the top OF prospects the Brewers have, we get Ruiz. I would’ve been happy if we got Sal Frelick or Garrett Mitchell.

And with Pina, I would’ve been happy if it was d’Arnaud instead. Not Pina, a garbage backup catcher who we have to pay 4.5M in 23 and most likely a 4.5M player option in 24. I would much have rather pay d’Arnaud the 8M owed in 23 and let him become a FA in 24.

No DickC the slight bump in payroll for a guy that has no future with the A’s is exactly the plan. Use his salary to look as if they are adding them, cut/trade him later, play salary minimum guys for the future. Yes, they still owe but the point is to just scratch the bottom to appear to comply.
