Orioles Outright Daz Cameron

By Darragh McDonald | December 2, 2022 at 2:51pm CDT

The Orioles announced that outfielder Daz Cameron has cleared outright waivers and been assigned to Triple-A Norfolk.

Cameron, 26 in January, was just claimed off waivers from the Tigers a few weeks ago. He was the 37th overall pick in 2015, taken by the Astros when Baltimore’s general manager Mike Elias was working for Houston.

As a prospect, Cameron was expected to have a solid floor thanks to his speed and defense but with development needed at the plate. The Tigers decided to take a chance on that profile by acquiring Cameron in the 2017 Justin Verlander trade. Unfortunately, the bat hasn’t taken the necessary step forward. In 73 MLB games thus far, he’s hit just .201/.266/.330 with a Triple-A line that’s only slightly better at .236/.324/.398.

Despite those tepid results, Cameron is still young and could be a nice piece for the O’s. Even without a huge development with the bat, his speed and defense could make him a candidate for fourth outfielder duty. Since he was out of options, he wasn’t going to be able to be shuttled back and forth between the majors and minors next year, but the Orioles can now keep him as depth without him taking up a roster spot.

Poor guy. I hope someone can help him with the bat.

I don’t know much about him. Is he a speed/defense guy?

Hulk, I don’t either. Betting he is a whiz in the OF.

Apparently the Tigers didn’t know much about him when they got him as the key piece in the Verlander trade.

Actually, pitcher Franklin Perez was the key piece in the Verlander trade. He has barely pitched and I think is pumping gas (literally, not like throwing 100 mph) somewhere in Latin America.

I do wish him luck, maybe he’ll eventually get it together.

Maybe a fourth outfielder/sub role. Competition for McKenna. Don’t like either. Their Off Base Percentage (the other OBP metric) include a lot of swings and misses.

Process is broken. He should go back to Detroit or Detroit should get compensated even if they don’t want him back.

First: Why should he be placed back in Detroit?
Second: If Detroit does not want him, they’ll just waive him again. What’s your point of sending him back to a team that is going to immediately cut him a second time?

He might be a good pick up for the Rockies or Twins to pick up as a back up outfielder

His claim to fame: In a game against the St. Louis Cardinals, Cameron stole a base against Yadier Molina, making him and his father Mike the first father-son duo to steal bases against Molina.

Strange to send him down and, apparently, replace him with Franchy who has a much stronger record of below average production.

The reality is the O’s didn’t replace Cameron with Cordero. They’re both on minor league contracts without 40-man roster spots.

I was hoping Seattle would draft him. His dad was so good here would have been fun watching his kid carry it on.

He was the big news on the summer tour his Jr year. Was playing and outplaying many Srs. Too bad he can’t hit a ball we already have one of those in the OF. Good luck to him maybe can turn it around.

Dad has been back around the Mariners a ton recently; maybe he’ll get a look? Having Cammy in the booth and behind the scenes has been great. He was a bit of a late bloomer himself so maybe there’s hope for Daz.
