The dust is still settling in the aftermath of the Twins’ big four-player trade with the Marlins this past week, as Luis Arraez was sent to Miami in exchange for right-hander Pablo Lopez and prospects Jose Salas and Byron Chourio. The move shook up Minnesota’s lineup and added yet another external arm to the Twins’ rotation.
As noted by Phil Miller of the Minneapolis Star Tribune, all five members of the projected starting five (Lopez, Tyler Mahle, Sonny Gray, Joe Ryan, and Kenta Maeda) were all acquired in trades over the last three years. Chris Paddack is currently recovering from Tommy John surgery but was also acquired in a trade with the Padres prior to last season, while Simeon Woods Richardson is another arm on the depth arm that came to the Twins as part of the deal that sent Jose Berrios to the Blue Jays at the 2021 trade deadline.
While it is somewhat unusual for a team to built its rotation entirely via the trade market, Twins chief baseball officer Derek Falvey was blunt in telling reporters (including Miller and Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press) that, “I don’t care where [the starters] come from. We need really good starters and we need really good pitchers. Some of those are going to be free-agent signings, some of those are going to be trades, and some of those will also hopefully be from development. But the goal here is to continue to deepen the starting rotation and pitching staff however we can do it.”
Bailey Ober is a homegrown product, selected by the Twins in the twelfth round of the 2017 draft. The right-hander has pitched well in 148 1/3 innings and 31 starts over the last two seasons, though Lopez’s addition seemingly pushes Ober out of the rotation mix for now. Of course, rotations rarely stay healthy for an entire season, leaving opportunity for Ober or other pitchers like Woods Richardson, Josh Winder, Louie Varland, etc. to make some starts if one of the top five needs to visit the injured list.
There’s also a chance that the starting five becomes a starting six, as adopting a six-man rotation is “something we talk about a lot,” Falvey admitted. Minnesota’s depth gives the team the flexibility to shift to a six-man rotation if necessary, and “I will tell you that our hope right now is that we will go with five starters, and we feel like we have five good ones…but ultimately [we] have some depth behind it to make sure that we’re in a good place.” If everyone stays healthy and the Twins do end up with a surplus of starting candidates, Falvey described that potential scenario as “a great problem to have.”
The Lopez trade closes the book on Arraez’s tenure with the Twins, as the infielder went from being a fairly unknown prospect to being an All-Star, Silver Slugger winner, and AL batting champion in 2022. Arraez was already a strong performer in the three years prior to his big 2022 campaign, but his performance did dip a bit in an injury-shortened 2021 season. In the wake of that relative down year, Jim Souhan of the Minneapolis Star Tribune writes that the Twins had some talks with Arraez about a long-term extension, but Arraez turned the club down.
As a Super Two player, Arraez is eligible for four trips through the arbitration process, and he and the Twins avoided a hearing in Arraez’s first year of arb-eligibility by agreeing to a $2.125MM salary for the 2022 season. While the terms of Minnesota’s extension offer aren’t known, it is fair to guess that the Twins were looking for a deal that would’ve covered all four of those arbitration years, as well as at least one of Arraez’s free agent years. Signing such a contract would’ve locked in a nice guarantee for Arraez, and the first major payday of a career that began with a modest $40K bonus as an international signing.
But, Arraez opted to instead bet on himself to rebound from his 2021 season, and that self-confidence paid off nicely. Prior to the trade, Arraez and the Twins were headed to an arbitration hearing after not being able to reach a salary agreement before the arbitration figure-exchange deadline — Arraez is looking for a $6.1MM salary, while the Twins countered with $5MM. It seems possible that the Marlins might still go to a hearing with Arraez due to general front office principle, even if an arbitration hearing would be something of an awkward start to the relationship between the infielder and his new team.
Old York
Nice looking rotation. If they stay fairly healthy, it could help carry them to the playoffs.
CaptainJudge99
They definitely seems like the top team in the AL Central now.
dlw0906
I still like Cleveland more. They are young and still have a bunch of projectionable talent on the horizon to add 2023’s division winning team in ’24. Better rotation and pen too.
Sky14
Think health will be the biggest factor. The Twins lead the division most of last year but injuries lead to a collapse near the end of the season.
someoldguy
competitive… isn’t Championship… they are playing to win the division… not the World Series.. bah Humbug
avenger65
Until the Twins figure out how to beat the Yankees, they aren’t going anywhere.
puhl
They just need to call Houston to get that answer.
mlb1225
Just saying, making it to the playoffs is enough for any team to get to the big stage. All that natters is that your team is hot for three weeks. Two of the last 4 NL pennant winners were Wild Card teams.
HalosHeavenJJ
Exactly. You get a few guys hot for a couple weeks and you’re in the Series.
PaulyMidwest
It helps they play in such a weak division but I agree they def should be fighting with CLE and possibly CWS for the division. They could run away with it if a few of their guys have career years..Like Buxton.
sportingdissent
I’d rather have both Cleveland and the White Sox’s rotations over Minnesota. Cleveland has the best rotation and pen and the White Sox likely have the best everyday lineup. Don’t see the Twins staying in this unless both those teams see major injuries.
Big whiffa
Twins have the best players in Correa and buxton. I agree they are third in rotation but not by much. Twins also have a slew of big named prospects who haven’t broke yet eventually those guys usually put it together in Lewis krilloff and Miranda. Twins will be in it !
Tigers3232
CLE has the best player in the division in JoRam. He’s complemented well with Gonzalez, Kwan, Naylor, Bell, Rosario, and Giminez. Not as many big names as the White Sox, but they were far more steady as far as production goes last season.
RobM
Twins sold high on Arraez.
martras
Maybe… Arraez definitely faded down the stretch last year, but if he can improve the glove a little, a move to 2B could see him as a perennial 3-4+ WAR player even as he is. That’s not easy to come by. If Arraez takes even a single step forward at the plate, he could make the All Star game every year before he inevitably leaves that sorry hole of a team in Miami.
RobM
I don’t dislike Arraez. He certainly has value. I’m simply not convinced he’ll have a better year than he did in 2022.
Tigers3232
@Rob in the 3 seasons prior the lowest he’s hit was .294. I think he ll continue to hit for decent average. He just does not have much power or speed to speak of. If he can hit .300 and 25-30 doubles, that’s quite a bit of production from 2B.
someoldguy
was playing injured… that was well known..
rememberthecoop
Defense will be even harder for him this year given the ban on shifting.
FossSellsKeys
His chronic leg issues make it hard for him to stay healthy playing 2B, so he’ll need to remain a 1B/DH guy moving forward. That’s why the Twins moved him out of the middle infield this year, and the result was his healthiest season. That’s one major reason they could move on from him, he’s not as valuable anymore playing the cold corner. Also, he’s much less effective against LHPs, to point where there was some discussion of platooning him if they’d have had some better options from the right side.
Tigers3232
Chronic leg issues? He missed 40 games one season. 2019 played almost 150 games between MiLB and MLB, 2020 Covid shortened, 2021 missed 40, played over 140 last season. Does not seem chronicly injured to me. And before the inevitable “he was playing injured” comment, every player goes through lingering injuries/ailments over 162 games. The key factor being I’d they can stay in lineup and b productive. To date Arraez has shown to b capable of doing just that.
Moneyballer
High twins, not sold on Arraez. Fixed it for ya!
SgtGrumbles
Miami Sold high on Lopez too though.
enemyoftheworld
It seems that the Marlins could’ve asked for a lot more last July.
martras
Well, based on Rocco Baldelli’s moves last year, you’d have to be inclined to believe elite starters would try and steer clear of the Twins. Baldelli had an league leading quick hook with fewer starts of 6+ innings than any other team in baseball and Falvey was on the record that it wasn’t a front office initiative. Sonny Gray wasn’t at all pleased with his situation as it didn’t help keep him from missing starts, but tanked his total innings pitched and damaged his value in free agency.
The rotation the Twins are putting together does look like it’s capable of getting the team to the playoffs, but again, without that frontline starter expected to shut opposing line ups down, it’ll be tough for the Twins to win a playoff series.
No problem with Bailey Ober moving to the bullpen. Ober’s had a long history of durability issues even before the Twins pushed Ober’s velocity up a few ticks. Pitching out of pen as a 1-3 inning reliever might help Ober stay off the IL and improve his effectiveness.
toomanyblacksinbaseball
Buxton is a better bet to be on the DL than to have a career year.
I don’t want to see Ober and Varland take St. Paul to the AAA world series. Hard to see guys from the system pushed aside by tainted trades.
C Yards Jeff
@StanK. Liked: “… take St Paul to the AAA world series”.
gbs42
What is tainted about their trades?
In Seager/Hader We Trust > the 70 MM DH Ohtani
On what world is a guy with a 0.69 ERA in over 78 innings not a top 100 prospect? He even pitched in AA in 2019. His WHIP was .81 and his strikeout to walk ratio was double digits. He has lots of potential for sure.
DarkSide830
I really think the Twins overthought this situation. Perhaps they think Lopez provides more value than Arraez, which is not a crazy assessment. However, who is getting pushed out of the rotation and who replaces Arraez. Ober is great – is pushing him out of the rotation and replacing Arraez is someone like Kirilloff really making the team better?
ilikesports
Based on what we’ve all read (and for pragmatic Twins fans, what we know), Arraez was expendable. I would never call Over great. He’s a 5 or 4, but also doesn’t stay healthy and never has going back to the minors. That’s why we did the trade. We can’t have a repeat of last year where an injured rotation destroyed our season.
martras
Ober was a 2 MLB caliber pitch pitcher in the minors. Fastball, changeup with a curve that wasn’t going to cut it. Especially through A+, command and control of your pitches is enough to put up really great numbers. Ober’s performance in AA opened some eyes, but his fastball was considered marginal at 90-91mph and as previously mentioned, his curve wasn’t considered an MLB caliber offering.
In short, the performance was considered to be an illusion which would fade once he faced AAA or especially MLB hitters.
The Twins worked with Ober to add significant velocity which allowed the fastball to play at the MLB level and gave Ober some new life, but it’s tough to say what will happen as scouting reports catch up… assuming Ober remains healthy enough to be part of a rotation, which is iffy at best.
Moonlight Graham
The rotation is solid and deep. But I really don’t see Lopez being a significant upgrade over Ober or possibly Woods-Richardson, and they still don’t have a frontline/ace-type to win the tough postseason games.
They can always make a move during the season, of course. It seems that Arraez could’ve been more useful for such a trade (say, Corbin Burnes), than to moderately improve the rotation now. But they might actually still have the prospect capital to make a big splash in July.
Samuel
When a team can’t develop their own pitchers, trading for pitchers seldom works as even established pitchers need to be recalibrated during the season.
The Twins traded for Jorge Lopez to be their closer during the 2022 stretch run. He imploded and the coaching staff couldn’t do anything.
Add in that Twins starters are out of the game after the 5th inning or the beginning of the 3rd time through the line-up. Who knows what experiments they’ll try this year.
DarkSide830
I guess they didn’t give away a lot, but I have no clue how anyone bought 1st half Lopez as sustainable.
Samuel
DarkSide830;
Actually, Jorge did go into a slump a bit after the All-Star game. Blew a few games. The O’s took him out of his spot for a few days so the coaches could work on him. He came back, made a few adjustments for 2-3 games, and was lights out again. Maybe teh O’s saw something.
Nevertheless they promoted one of their set-up guys that pitched better than Jorge. And while the 4 guys they got back for him weren’t big prospects, the O’s are one organizations that can develop pitchers so I’d expect in later in 2023 or 2024 we’ll be seeing them.
someoldguy
if you look … Teams that have starters that pitch the most innings tend towards being those that make the post season, go deep in the post season.. the Twins.. 5 and fly… and hasn’t worked well the last 2 years..
someoldguy
Funny but The Dynamic Duo were hired to build the Twins into a Starting pitching production machine…. instead… they haven’t drafted and developed a single top tier pitcher… ( like the Clevelanders) instead they create a hole to fill a hole in the MLB roster… crazy… sell prospects… 75% of them won’t be anything of note…
BeansforJesus
I would hate for Ober to pitch out of the BP. I know raw stuff plays up in the BP, but putting Ober there, imo, would ruin him as a starter. He has a good understanding of what works for him and he excels. Placing him in the BP could lead to him emphasizing strikeouts, ultimately ruining his development.
Logistics Guy
If the Minn Twins need to replace their current manager. The perfect replacement for them. Is Joe Madden
This club need a shot In arm and Joe would do just that
joefleury
Been wanting this to happen and it needs to happen.
PutPeteinthehall
Doubt he ever manages again. Did you ever have the opportunity to watch him manage an entire season? I have. Buffoonery is a good definition. He cannot manage a pitching staff. Hasn’t a clue when to pull a pitcher or leave him in. The master of playing multiple players out of position in a single line up card. He must have played too much musical chairs as a youngster.
Rsox
Maddon is not the key for winning in Minnesota. Maddon only works on young teams for a very short time. The Pirates may be a good spot for him but not a team with playoff aspirations
Rsox
This is a one year rotation as Gray/Mahle/Maeda are all free agents next winter. The bullpen is an area of concern as Pagan was mostly awful last season and Jorge Lopez was terrible after coming over from Baltimore. The Twins like power too. Though if Gallo can revert to his Texas form that would be huge.
Still think Cleveland is the best team in the division currently
dlw0906
Teams need to go back to 4 man rotations with 5th a swingman as spot starter when necessary. Most 5th starters in MLB are pretty much garbage. 35 starts per starter with the other 22 consisting of spot starts or bullpen games. Most starters only go 6 innings anyhow so over 35 starts its still just 210 innings. A MLB SP should be able to throw over 200 innings in a season even with pitch counts. It’s not like we’ve seen less TJS or other arm surgeries with the pitch counts amd reduced innings anyway. I’d love to see a team do this.
Rsox
It’s hard enough to get 25 starts out of most starters and with todays coddled work load that would never work, especially when you have teams talking about 6 man rotations
dlw0906
I love how most MLB teams can’t put together a rotation of good starters 1-5 now think adding a 6th is some kind of solution.
Jacksson13
If Kirilloff isn’t recovered from his 2 wrist procedures, who’s on first?
twins33
Current roster I’d say Gallo or Kepler. I lean Gallo. Not on 40 man option: Julien. He’s a 2B right now, but there are talks he’s not good there and may move elsewhere, elsewhere being 1B or DH.
Rsox
In-house options would be Tyler White, Andrew Bechtold, or Chris Williams. Twins will likely add another option via free agency or trade. Luke Voit and Jesus Aguilar are still available and they are supposedly linked to Yuli Gurriel.
Outside the box thinking says they couid ask Joey Gallo to play 1B. Gallo has 96 games at 1B, even though he’s only appeared there once since 2018
HalosHeavenJJ
It takes 8 plus starters to get through a year. Twins look to have that.
I think they’re the most balanced team in the division. They’ll out score Cleveland but give up more runs.
The Einheri
It’ll be interesting now to see if the marlins and Arraez can come to an agreement and avoid arbitration and if the Fish will be able to immediately extend him and buy out his remaining arbitration years and more.
kfvynziam
Don’t need a comma after but.
GarryHarris
The Marlins are hopeless
AHH-Rox
How does it work trading for a player after arb figures have been exchanged? Are the Marlins stuck with the offer the Twins made?
jorge78
Arreaz should have taken the extension. Singles hitter with no power, no speed and below average defense whose batting average is due for regression. He won’t age well…..
brucenewton
He won the batting title. He’ll get the 6.1 in arbitration.
Sky14
My understanding is that Arb figures tend to favor counting stats such as HRs and RBIs. Would be surprised if he won.
fletch
Collection of mediocre pitching, this front office is clueless. They get talked into trades by other teams and they spin them to make them sound like it’s a great deal. This front office needs to be replaced with some people that know baseball.
toomanyblacksinbaseball
Maeda will need half the season to become a starter. He can be the 1-3 inning bridge to the closers rather than truck out 6-7 relievers out every game.
Twins need to find a way to get more than two rounds through the lineup and 100 pitches out of starters.
Makes more sense for the Twins to keep developing Ober as he’s likely to be around longer.
RodBecksBurnerAccount
I don’t like this move for the Twins.
