The Padres have agreed to a deal with free-agent second baseman Rougned Odor, reports Jon Heyman of the New York Post (Twitter link). Odor, a client of the Beverly Hills Sports Council, has already arrived at Padres camp this morning, tweets AJ Cassavell of MLB.com.
Odor and the Padres agreed to a minor league deal with an invite to spring training, tweets Cassavell. Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune adds that Odor still needs to pass a physical before the deal becomes official. That process will get underway shortly.
Odor, still just 29, reached the big leagues as a 20-year-old with the Rangers back in 2014 and, by 2016, looked like one of baseball’s best young second basemen. To that point in his career, he’d slashed .265/.302/.464 while steadily increasing his power output. Odor belted 33 home runs in 2016, offsetting a woeful 3.0% walk rate and .296 OBP with huge power, solid bat-to-ball skills and quality defense at second base.
That ability to make contact has waned over the years, however, and Odor’s production at the plate has been dismal of late. Dating back to 2019, he’s a .201/.274/.398 hitter (78 wRC+). He’s begun to take more walks, but his 7.6% rate over the past four seasons is still below average. Meanwhile, his once better-than-average strikeout rate has ballooned to 27.8% since ’19. He did improve on that front with the Orioles last year (23.1%), but the 2022 season also included Odor’s lowest power output since his rookie season (13 home runs in 472 plate appearances, .150 ISO).
San Diego currently projects to have right-handed bats at third base (Manny Machado), shortstop (Xander Bogaerts) and second base (Ha-Seong Kim), as well as an all-right-handed bench (Luis Campusano, Jose Azocar, Adam Engel, Brandon Dixon). Odor will compete for a spot as a lefty option off the bench, joining non-roster veterans like David Dahl, Preston Tucker, Alfonso Rivas and Max Schrock in that regard. He’ll also give the Padres some depth during the World Baseball Classic, with both Kim and Bogaerts away from the club representing their respective countries.
The agreement between the Padres and Odor marks yet another reunion between a former Ranger farmhand and Padres president of baseball operations A.J. Preller, who previously was an assistant GM in Texas. Over the past several years under Preller, the Padres have also taken looks at veterans such as Jurickson Profar, Ian Kinsler, Nomar Mazara, Keone Kela, Mitch Moreland, Carl Edwards Jr. and Luis Sardinas — among many others. The current roster features former Rangers Yu Darvish, Nelson Cruz and Nick Martinez.

Stupid comment. Odor is a fantastic clubhouse guy, well known for being a natural leader and big on good vibes.

You’ve always wanted him on your team because you want your team to suck? Not many people want rogund “the stench” odor around. You’re definitely one of the few. You probably also believe Montreal deserves a new team.

You judge a guy how he looks and probably how he even trots around the bases.
Odor is definitely far from a cancer in the dugout.

He’s already made more than 50 million bucks in his career (which BTW is more than Tony Gwynn ever made minus endorsements) so I guess he simply wants to play for a World Series contender. Can’t blame him. It will be hard to make this team, though. In fact, based on his position, this is the hardest team to make in all of baseball.

I don’t think he had many options.

He probably tried to sign with a World Series contender but stat wise he’s not really World Series contender material. Good enough for a team like the Padres though.

Kim and Bogey going to WBC. Take a flyer on a veteran. Its a MiLB deal, so worse case, you release him. If he looks good, maybe you can trade him for a lottery ticket.
Longtimecoming
Kim, Bogey AND Manny going to WBC. Rosario out and have a 19 year old projected to go to AA or high A getting most of reps at SS for most of ST as a result. If you want Cro at 1b for season, need to keep him there most of ST instead of filling hole at SS or 2b.
A warm body for 3-4 weeks, see what he has and well, maybe just maybe taking a guy off the market that the Dodgers might look at?
Milb deal so no cost for ST invite.

Why are you asking Padres fans? Fans have nothing to do with signing players.
Steve Cohen Owns You
Believe it or not, there are other outlets for baseball news besides MLBTR! Most fans like to follow their team more closely than the generic write-ups predominately captured on here.
For example, I haven’t seen much (if any) news reported on here about deGrom’s oblique or Kyle Wright’s shoulder.
“Fans have nothing to do with signing players” is true in a literal sense. Challenge yourself to step outside the box of MLBTR’s often incomplete and regurgitated reports.

And many of those other outlets have also used MLBTR as a source for their stories as well, so it works both ways.

Undoubtedly, but when you mention either name, most non-Toronto fans immediately think of the punch, not money.
DerekBellsMoistMoustache
Sure, the punch went down in history but I think a lot of people who love the game of baseball recall the 54 home runs out of nowhere, and I think there was something about a bat flip that made Mr. Odor a little sad 🙁
bhambrave
Like I said, to non-Toronto fans, the punch lives on. Bat flips and 54 homers don’t.
DerekBellsMoistMoustache
Yeah fair enough. A game in mid-May definitely has more longevity than the playoffs. Like I said, people who enjoy baseball remember certain things. People like you choose not to. All good!
bhambrave

Wow…thought he was like 35.

maybe he pulled a “Bartolo Colon” / “Rafael Furcal” / “Miguel Tejada” / “Danny Almonte” and lied about his age when they signed him to get himself signed and/or get a larger signing bonus and/or play for the little league championship against kids 3 years younger than him… which would make sense because it would explain his prime years in 2016 and 2017 being around 27 / 28 years old instead of 22/23 and his fall off during his age 26 season (when he was really probably 32)

C Yards Jeff
And well liked in the clubhouse. IMO, if he sticks, a healthy roster spot presence.
Waymann
Agreed. Also, the O’s has to use him in some disadvantageous situations (against lefties) where the Padres won’t have to.
Probably will be nothing more than a depth signing but I could see a scenario where there’s an injury or two and Rougie gets 50-100 ABs primarily pinch-hitting/late game subbing against righties.
Love Of The Game
With several players going to the WBC and this being strictly an MiLB deal it’s a good move I’d say. No hassle on roster construction, can provide depth for a few weeks and let’s the organization take a look at some upcoming youth with a veteran mentor still around.
CNichols
I think this is totally WBC motivated. Like you said, it gives them depth for a few weeks. With X, Kim, and Machado gone the non-1B infield group looks really thin.
Tatis/Crone can play over there, but if they’re going to line up in RF and 1B respectively this year, then they probably want them to take most of their reps at those two spots.
Brew88
Preller said he’d bring in a few vets on miLB deals because 3 IF starters are at WBC and it’s a chance to truly evaluate borderline/recovering guys like Odor, who will get real game time in spring training that the otherwise couldn’t have given him with Kim, Machado and Bogey around. This doesn’t hurt Batten really, he’ll still in play for a roster spot and will get plenty of looks this spring. WBC also gives more playing time this spring for guys like Dahl, who looks really good so far. Preller’s just taking advantage of the opportunity WBC is creating this spring.
avenger65
If I was Preller, I would invite all the remaining FA to camp. He can just cut the ones he doesn’t like. It won’t cost him anything.

i dont mind this at all takes away from all the mets call outs. Although if it was a minor league deal i would have said mets would be a better choice since most of our outfield is injury prone and lets be honest we have no depth in the minors if one goes down. We are just moving infielders to the of most likely or signing someone cut from another team.
Steve Cohen Owns You
Cahna, Nimmo, Marte, Pham, Baty, Vientos, and McNeil can all play out there. And there’s always the trade deadline.
Roll
“our outfield is injury prone and lets be honest we have no depth in the minors if one goes down. We are just moving infielders to the of most likely or signing someone cut from another team.”
Nimmo and Marte have been injury prone. Ill be honest i dont know about pham.injury history but looks like he is ok.
Baty Vientos and McNeil are infielders. Vientos can barely play 3rd or 1st are we going to have another Lucas Duda, Daniel Murphy, Dom Smith scenario again? Are you going to throw baty in the of with minimal experience out there (30ish games), with all the hype on his name, coming off a slow start, and injury while getting used to the speed of mlb in a ny market when he is tagged to be your 3b of the future especially with Machado off the board. In a pinch yes throw hi out there for a game maybe 2 but if someone hits the IL.
yes there is always the trade deadline but the mets won 100 games here is something to consider…How many games did the mets need to get the bye for the playoffs? Are you going to wait half a season to get someone?
Im a huge mets homer but lets be realistic. Im always a fan that you have you have first guy up in the minors can reasonably step in to the majors and not miss a huge beat if you can. You have that with Mauricio or Baty for the infield but the outfield its Lee or Locastro. Maybe locastro can make up for the production with defense and speed but he cant hit his way out of a paper bag.
Steve Cohen Owns You
I agree with you on the injuries and the lack of depth at AAA.
You’re off on your assessment of McNeil’s skill though. He had a great year at 2B, but the Mets have nice options if Jeff were to move temporarily due to an injury. If McNeil were to move out there, Guillorme can take the keystone – one of the best defenders in the league and he drives opposing pitchers crazy with his long at bats. You could also move Escobar to second and Baty to third.
They have a lot more flexibility than you’re giving them credit for ON THE MLB ROSTER already. It’s just deceiving because they have Baty, Mauricio, Alvarez, and Vientos who are all MLB ready.
Roll
“You’re off on your assessment of McNeil’s skill though.”
can you show me my assessment on mcneil? i dont remember stating one other than say he was an infielder and i said “moving infielders to the of” I think that is a correct statement unless he became a catcher or pitcher or maybe a trumpeteer for Diaz. I dont remember actually mentioning him anywhere other than that and he is your 5th outfielder right now and will be rotational each week to give breaks to marte and canha.
Ok lets put mcneil to the outfield for a couple of weeks / months and he would be ok out there Then as you suggest put giullorme to 2nd who now backs up shortstop? Do you bring up Mauricio to sit on the bench and get maybe 2 or 3 at bat a week and start his clock to twiddle his thumbs or keep him in the minors to play everyday? Do you move him to 2nd base where he has not played before and to throw a young kid in his first taste on a position he has never played before?
If one of the outfielders go down basically your bench is nothing but corner infielders and your first callups would be corner infielders or ss that has never played anywhere else. That or you are bringing up a late game replacements / pinch runners that at their best are AAAA and not much upside and there is not even one in the pipeline to come up with high upside. .
Buck sees the issue thats why he is trying escobar in the outfield this spring to see if he can handle it. They definitely realize their depth at quality outfielders outside of their starting 3 is severely lacking. Profar on a minor league would have provided nice dept. Not ideal but i think Hererra might be a nice minor leage pickup, not a great hitter but is not a complete skunk at the plate and has played all of positions and probably better than locastro or lee and get them maybe on league minimum or just a little over and would not have to take a roster spot.

It doesn’t hurt to get a look at other players. It’s not like they have to pay Odor for spring training.
csspackler
No, they don’t. Jackson Merrill is their infield prospect and No. 1 overall. But he’ll soon be sent to minor league camp. Next highest infielder is Eguy Rosario, who broke his ankle during winter ball.
What remains are minor league journeymen. Odor comes in on a minor league contract. Good situation for him, as Kim, Boegarts and Machado leave to play in the WBC. He gets playing time, the Padres get to look at him to see if he can still play. If he shows something, he’ll jump ahead of the journeymen. If not, he’s cut when the others return. No risk/possible reward.
