California Notes: Walsh, Padres, Dahl, Engel, Cruz, Morejon, Pomeranz, A’s, Blackburn, Rucinski

By Mark Polishuk | April 9, 2023 at 10:09am CDT

Jared Walsh has yet to suit up for the Angels this season, as he has been on the 10-day injured list recovering from insomnia and recurring headaches.  Manager Phil Nevin provided media (including MLB.com and J.P. Hoornstra of the Southern California News Group) with an update on Walsh’s condition, saying that “He’s doing okay.  He feels like he’s making a lot of progress, getting some clarity on what’s going on.”  The recovery process has included a two-week stint with a specialist in Utah, which has limited Walsh’s baseball-related training activity mostly to weekends with the Angels’ Triple-A affiliate in Salt Lake City.

Owing to the unpredictable nature of his problem, there isn’t yet a timeline for Walsh’s return, as Nevin noted that the first baseman will need some level of a rehab assignment or a ramp-up period before he gets onto the field.  Walsh was already making a comeback from an injury-hampered 2022 season, as he struggled to a .215/.264/.374 slash line in 454 plate appearances before undergoing surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome in September.

More from the Golden State’s teams…

  • Padres outfielder David Dahl suffered a quad injury during a sprinting drill, manager Bob Melvin told Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune and other reporters.  The injured list might be necessary for Dahl, which would further thin the Padres outfield situation since Fernando Tatis Jr. isn’t yet eligible for reinstatement and Adam Engel has yet to play this season due to a hamstring strain.  Engel’s timeline isn’t yet clear, but he is participating in games at extended Spring Training to make up for time lost due to both his hamstring and a calf injury during Cactus League play.  Melvin suggested that Nelson Cruz might be an option for the Padres in the outfield, even though Cruz has been a virtual DH-only player (apart from one game at first base with the Rays in 2021) for the last four seasons.
  • In other Padres injury updates, Adrian Morejon is on the 60-day IL with an elbow sprain, but he played his first game of catch Friday in almost a month.  Drew Pomeranz threw a live batting practice session on Saturday as the reliever works his way back from flexor tendon surgery in August 2021.  San Diego played Pomeranz on the 15-day IL to begin the season after he had some elbow inflammation during spring work.
  • Athletics right-handers Paul Blackburn and Drew Rucinski are expected to begin Triple-A rehab assignments this week, according to MLB.com’s Martin Gallegos (Twitter links) and other reporters.  Blackburn already had a rehab outing in A-ball on Friday, and his planned Triple-A start on Tuesday will increase his workload to three innings or 45 pitches.  Rucinski came out of a 40-pitch side session on Saturday in good condition, so he is also expected for a three-inning/45-pitch outing with Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday.  Blackburn (fingernail avulsion) and Rucinski (hamstring strain) each began the season on the 15-day IL, and are on track to enter Oakland’s rotation when healthy.

Walsh is on the IL for severe, chronic migraines that were bad enough that the team sent him to Utah for 2 weeks of in-patient care.

The Angels need Walsh back. Lamb is helpless. Drury at first, Rengifo at second.

The Angels pen has pitched in 5 close games. They have been effective twice and gave away two games. Ben Joyce couldn’t find the plate at AA. Maybe bauchman. Something has to change.

And I’d really wish Nevin would stop managing the pen like it’s the early 70s. RPs are more successful when they start inning, and let them finish the inning unless they are struggling. Moore vs Herget for example.

Right on the money on allowing relievers to pitch full innings (unless struggling). Matt Moore has been burned twice by Nevin’s mismanaging.

I agree. I like Phil from his Padres days. But the mid-inning changes are over the top. And it seems like invariably, the pitcher gives up a long one before he settles in… Only to get yanked.

For the last week, I’m having a mild migraine. . I’ve also had what it appears what Walsh is going through for about six weeks. It is so bad you can’t function.

I wish him well and a speedy recovery.

Yeah, migraines are awful. Go see your primary care doctor if you haven’t already. Migraines are better understood than they used to be, and there are some effective meds for dealing with them out there.

There are migraines where you have to go into a dark room, vomit, and any sound pounds on your head like a hammer.

Then, there is what I have now, a headache that has lasted for more than a week. The former is unbearable, the later happens to me from time to time. As long as I can watch baseball, I’m happy.

I only brought it up because I had a moderately bad migraine that lasted 6 weeks, I couldn’t function. I think that’s what Walsh is going through.

@Halo, they do MRIs now. They can identify source of pain and come up with a more localized treatment plan. It did wonders for my wife with migraines.

When I had the six week severe headache (moderate migraine) I had an MRI. I think it was an MRI. They put me in one of those machines where I had to lie down and stay still for 20 minutes.

    Insomnia and recurring headaches from

Aspirin sales should be selling at a good rate for the next 6 months.

Sasha, I think I’ve been saying that for awhile. There are some average players playing, but most of this team is darn good. Stassi’s injury helped. Urshela looks looks like he has the hands for short, maybe not the feet, I don’t know.

When Walsh comes back, the weak link is Rengifo, but as weak links go, that’s not bad

The bullpen stinks. And why the avoid solving the problem baffles me,

Some Angel fans say I’m a broken record. Well something is broken. This is the sixth close game the pen has been involved. They have need good in two. And in those two games the Angels scored to take the pressure off.

So they are two and four and gave away three games.

I’d be ok with using certain banned substances for injuries if they are a bona fide treatment for whatever they are recovering from, that a civilian with the same injury would also be prescribed. Not as a shortcut that no one would ever use but an athlete.

Determining the “best” is purely subjective. I would say Bonds during his peak was the most productive hitter of all time. I would also say that for me, his substance use gave him an unfair advantage over his competition. So for me that moves him down on the list of “best ever”. Best ever is all based on the observer though and there is no objective “best of all time* in sports.

I would argue that someone who thinks their opinion is the correct one and shuns any alternative thought is the one who should “grow up”

We live in a country that let’s people smoke cigarettes. If a grown man wants to shorten his life with juice that should be his business.

Wasn’t Bonds pacing to be the first 500 honers 500 steals guy before juice? He was a top ten guy before the juice. Wish for his sake he didn’t do it, but I loved watching him. McGwire and Sosa made for one of the best seasons ever, and I dont believe most guys who tell me they hated it and thought it was bad for the game back when it was happening. There were a few guys back then, but most fans loved it. Baseball boomed and it resurrected post strike baseball. Chicks dug the longball.

@Halofan11yearsold “which will likely shorten your life” – that is a 100% unsubstantiated claim in MLB. You do understand asthmatics use steroids, right? Why are you literally saying “WWE wrestlers who use steroids every day for 20 years and die early is EXACTLY the same as a MLB player doing 1 cycle every 6 months for a couple of years” ?? One of those things will shorten your life and one will not at all, but you are on a pedestal once again, lying about a thing you have no clue about. Barry Bonds is going to live a long life. Yawn.

Except for the fact that a trainer for the Mariners said that Dan Wilson was the only player on the Mariners who wasn’t using. And Griffey’s entitled, bratty personality and physical changes back that up. Griffey was a user. And Griffey Jr’s career wasn’t broken- that’s such a myth. Injuries were only a serious issue for him from ages 32-34- when he was in major decline anyway because of aging. And he was never going to break the HR record- that’s a ridiculous thing many still think and the numbers don’t back it up whatsoever.

Griffey also missed substantial time during 3 seasons before his age 32 season, so here you’re blatantly spreading misinformation. During his age 24 season, he missed 51 games; during his age 25 season, he missed 90 games; and during his age 31 season, he missed 61 games. While not as major, he also missed 22 games during his age 26 season. Get your facts straight, please.

Right- he missed the equivalent of slightly more than 1 full season with that- and a lot of that was because of the strike and nobody was playing then. Missing the equivalent of slightly more than 1 full season from ages 19-31 is not a lot at all and most players deal with injuries at some point anyway- he was playing in huge numbers of games from a very early age. He also averaged 128 games per year from ages 35-39, which is a big number for those ages and significantly *more* than what 35-39 year old players play on average. He ended up playing only 300 fewer games than Bonds and only 100 fewer games than Rodriguez and only 35 players in MLB history appeared in more games than Griffey Jr. The notion that he just didn’t have enough playing time is absurd and still held by a lot of people.

It will be nice to have Jared Walsh back. But Jake Lamb did some revamping of his game and has been doing surprisingly well as a LH bat at 1B platooning with Brandon Drury.

I felt going into the season that the Angels will make the playoffs in 2023. GM Perry Minasian has put together a deep roster as well as overseen a revamping of the way they coach pitchers. If they can avoid long-term injuries to key players, they can win the AL West this year. That is a very, very good team.

Jake Lamb is awful. He’s 0 for his last 15 and batting .136 for the season. The Angels are his 7th club since 2020.

Perry has been mediocre at best. Angels won’t get into the postseason without an adequate bullpen or a closer. Someone like Raisel Iglesias would be nice in the backend of the pen.

this is easily the WORST A’s team they have ever had. I am now doubting they can win 50 games this year. Why does MLB allow a owner to dismantle a team so he can cut cost to nothing? we need a new baseball commissioner that cares about the game and not allow owners to destroy a team.

What team are you watching? This team is a massive upgrade over last year, where we were truly awful. Kotsay’s lineup choices are already very stupid, that’s playing into it. Aledmys Diaz is NOT a shortstop, and already blew 4 plays by my count that led to runs that Nick Allen makes all day. Why is he playing Aguilar anywhere but DH? Noda and Brown are both superior 1Bs. The Rays are extremely good this year, obviously they are going to cook the rebuilding team in the early going – but the A’s are likely winning 75+ this year, with contention next season.

What team are you watching because that is not the A’s team i seen so far. The starting pitching is much worse than last year and the lineup lack quality hitters. Ruiz and Lang is the only 2 long term future players in the lineup. rest of them are part time or AAA level players. I say 50 games and you say 80 so lets see who is closest to their prediction at the end of the year.

I agree. When teams blatantly tank, MLB should step in and blatantly lower ticket prices. $5 a game, any seat.

Insomnia and headaches puts a guy on the injured list. I went to work more times than I can count with issues like this. Guess money does make you complacent.

Birdman, consider yourself lucky that has never happened to you. It happened to me, and it was the worst six weeks of my life. And that includes the time I had mono and couldn’t get out of bed and couldn’t eat for ten days.

When they say headache, they are talking about severe, chronic migraines. They can be debilitating.

When the migraines are bad enough people are hospitalized for them and the ones that Walsh is having were bad enough they sent him to Utah to a specialist in migraines for in-patient care instead of just seeing the team doctor for treatment.

So no, you didn’t go to work with issues like this.

    Re: San Diego’s thin outfield.

I don’t think Nelson Cruz needs to play the OF. He hasn’t played OF since 4 games in 2018. If he plays any defense, it seems like it will be at 1b, which also probably won’t be needed.

If Dahl goes on the IL, someone will replace him, because why wouldn’t that happen? On the 40 man roster, SD has Brandon Dixon and Matthew Batten. Both of them are definitely primarily infielders, but they also play OF. Dixon has about 60 MLB games in the OF. Both of them started one game in the OF for SD last year.

SD currently has three active OFers on their roster, Azocar, Soto, Grisham. And Tatis will be activated on April 20th, and Engel or Dahl not too long after.

Rougned Odor and Matt Carptenter are infielders who can also play OF.

Austin Nola played 6 innings of OF in 2019, and Manny Machado kind of played the OF during extreme shifts which are no longer allowed.

I think that all of the above options are better in the outfield than Nelson Cruz.

I love Matt Carpenter. But at this stage in his career, playing the OF could be… bad.
