Pirates Outright Chase De Jong

By Steve Adams | June 12, 2023 at 10:15am CDT

Pirates righty Chase De Jong went unclaimed on outright waivers and was assigned to Triple-A Indianapolis, per the team’s transaction log at MLB.com. De Jong has been previously outrighted in his career, so he has the right to reject that assignment in favor of free agency.

De Jong, 29, was outstanding in Pittsburgh last season but has been unable to replicate his success in 2023. The journeyman right-hander delivered 71 2/3 frames of 2.64 ERA ball a year ago but has thus far been rocked for 17 earned runs in just 11 1/3 innings. De Jong’s 20.1% strikeout rate in 2022 was already below average, but that number has plummeted to 11.7% in this year’s smaller sample. He’s missed fewer bats while continuing to struggle with free passes, and opponents in 2023 have already tagged him for six home runs in just 60 plate appearances.

This is De Jong’s second DFA of the season in Pittsburgh. He had the right to reject an outright assignment last time around as well but opted to accept an assignment to Indianapolis after clearing waivers. He’s pitched 10 1/3 frames in Indy, recording a much sharper 1.74 ERA with a 22.9% strikeout that’s more than double his big league rate but also an alarming 16.9% walk rate. De Jong has a 5.42 ERA in 181 Major League innings and a similar 5.51 ERA in 217 1/3 Triple-A frames. That career ERA in Triple-A is skewed by some earlier struggles; he has a 2.70 mark there in 43 1/3 innings across the past three seasons.

Good. We don’t want a negative 0.6 WAR player on this championship team.

Cherington told the Tribune Review that Contrares is going to the bullpen until further notice.
Which means they have an opening in the rotation to fill

you were implying Bido was a dumpster dive. who would you select to start? Priester isn’t ready. They have lost 3 starters due to injuries. so who would be your choice?

Probably best to ignore TheMan’s negative comments. I think he has standard templates that auto-post depending on the article’s subject matter.

Bido has come thru the Bucs system – so not a dumpster dive but his numbers at AAA over the last three seasons are alarmingly awful. According to Fangraphs, he hasn’t posted an ERA,FIP or xFIP under 4.53 at any level since A-ball in 2019… and sits well in the 5.00 plus range most of the time.

At 27yo, it looks like a one and done cannon fodder move to me.

thank you. i just get tired of the constant negativity towards the pirates. are they a WS contender? probably not, but are definitely more enjoyable to watch this year. with that said I don’t think Bido is a long term solution by any means. Hopefully they work some magic and trade for a decent controlable starter around the dead line. they need to trade from their middle infield log jam. once cruz gets back someone is going to have to go.

I totally agree with you regarding the constant negativity in what’s been an enjoyable season so far.

I’m also on board with GMBC trading at least one of the young IF guys for some kind of SP depth. And I don’t mean looking for a top tier rental for the rest of this season – more like a back end guy with some potential and two/three years of control because other than Priester, there’s nothing at all above AA to make it to Pittsburgh by April 2024 so this problem isn’t going away unless addressed via trade/waiver claim.

they need to make a decision on Castro. He hits lefties unbelievable. maybe there’s something there. maybe a JP Sears type in return.

Steve….these guys complain all the time about the pirates. They are in first place. Why the negative vibes from cornhole and old maid 3? Because they are tired old fools with nothing better to do.
I’m 67. I’ve been a pirate fan since 1965. I’m excited about this young team. Keller is going to be an amazing pitcher. As for Castro. Let him play everyday. But since Shelton is the manager… That won’t happen.

i’ve only been a fan since 2010 due to circumstances unrelated to baseball but I have followed them religiously since then. i watched many of these guys play low a ball. cruz, keller and hayes about the last of the ones I got to watch though. regardless they are playing solid ball now and I like you chose to enjoy it because the past few years has been hard to watch.

Terrier- They May be planning to use Bido as an opener with Roansy coming in for the fourth inning. This May get them a month to bring up Priester.

Wv-The decision on Castro would be based on what they want to do with Bae.
Is he the permanent center fielder?
The only position that Castro could play is second base.
Marcano would be the utility man when Cruz comes back.
I also think that Mitchell and CSN are extras if Palacios hits like he has been.

          A three inning opener?

          That’s not a thing.

Cannon fodder is what Bido is, but he’s about to be rewarded financially for sticking around in the Bucs system for years.

          Kudos, Osvaldo.

Terrier-Not sure what your definition of an opener is,but mine is someone designed to pitch three innings or less to limit the amount of times that the other team sees his pitches. It is often a long man from the bullpen.
I would give Bido a chance before he proves to be,in your words, cannon fodder.
