Perry Minasian Discusses Ohtani, Payroll, Nevin

By Nick Deeds | October 3, 2023 at 4:47pm CDT

Angels GM Perry Minasian conducted the club’s end-of-season presser this afternoon, and in doing so discussed an array of topics with reporters following a brutally disappointing 2023 campaign that saw the club go 73-89 during Shohei Ohtani’s last season under club control and miss the postseason for the ninth consecutive season.

Speaking of Ohtani, Minasian told reporters (including Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register) that he believes “this is a place that he enjoys playing and this is a place that he loves.” Though he acknowledged that Ohtani was disappointed that the club didn’t improve in 2023 (instead posting an identical record to the 2022 club), he adds that “you get the feeling that this is a place he really, really appreciates, respects. And we’ll just have to see what happens over the course of the offseason.”

Minasian’s comments regarding Ohtani, while reiterating the the team would love to retain the two-way phenom next season, give Angels fans little reason for optimism as Ohtani heads to the open market with a chance at a record-setting free agent deal, even as he rehabs from an elbow procedure that will keep him off of the mound until 2025. Further casting doubt on a potential return to Anaheim for Ohtani were comments from Minasian regarding the club’s payroll outlook, as the GM admitted (as relayed by Sam Blum of The Athletic), that he couldn’t say whether or not ownership would be willing to replicate the club’s 2023 payroll, which was the highest of Arte Moreno’s tenure as owner. Re-signing Ohtani would almost certainly require a massive financial outlay, to say nothing of the other additions necessary to build a contender around both him and fellow generational star Mike Trout.

While Minasian said that Moreno is “motivated to win”, he also admitted that he isn’t yet certain whether or not the club was able to duck under the luxury tax threshold by the end of the year. In service of that goal, the clubs lashed payroll in the final months of the season by putting half-a-dozen veteran players on expiring deals on waivers, including major deadline acquisition Lucas Giolito. If the Angels do wind up paying the luxury tax in 2023, it will be the first time they’ve done so under Moreno’s ownership.

Minasian also discussed the club’s decision to part ways with manager Phil Nevin and the uncertain futures of members of both the coaching staff and front office. Minasian noted (per Blum) that the club had not yet made any final personnel decisions beyond moving on from Nevin as manager, who was let go due to a “collaborative” decision between Moreno and Minasian himself. As Blum notes, it’s an interesting departure from the decision to fire manager Joe Maddon last summer, which was made by Minasian alone. It would appear the club hasn’t begun to determine who will replace Nevin as manager, as Fletcher notes that Minasian told reporters that the club does not yet have a list of potential managerial candidates, and that there’s no timeline for a decision at this point.

More of the same. Until Moreno sells this team there will be no progress. Ohtani is leaving, so now they need to add a #1 pitcher and a DH. Why would Snell want to pitch for the Angels? There are no big DH bats available in free agency this year. Carpino the marketing man is still the president. What top flight manager wants to be a part of this mess?

They need a #1, #2, #3, a closer, an 8th inning guy, a long reliever, 3B, manager, scouting, player development, infield depth that can actually hit a baseball, a 4th OF who doesn’t strike out at 35%, etc.

Nope…add a hitting coach to this list. Their approach at the plate was horrendous and when players were slumping there were no adjustments. Need someone with a track record more than just being the manager’s best man in his wedding

You’re right weggie. The difference when I’ve watched 1st place teams play this year is situational hitting…get ’em on, get ’em in. We had none of that.

And pitchers who throw strikes in clutch moments. We had none of that too.

The pitchers throwing strikes, yes. But can you explain situational hitting?

When people write about that, it’s typically baseball malarkey.

Baseball reference has a stat on it. You must love Rendon, he’s the best on the team.

It’s malarkey because teams that can hit score runs, teams that can’t don’t, LH are better than RH, for obvious reasons.

Mike Trout, Ohtani and Drury were all below league average making productive outs. That’s because it’s more important to slug.

It is important for bad hitters to move runners. Most playoff teams don’t have lineups filled with bad hitters.

The Angels fan in me wants Ohtani to stay but the Ohtani fan in me wants him to go to a better situation. It’s what’s best for Ohtani. Not increasing payroll means he has to move on.

The Angels will not be any good until they completely revamp their scouting and player development departments.

It’s one thing to draft high floor low ceiling players, it’s another to draft and develop diamonds in the rough. You need HRs, you need solid. You need both

In a weird way Ohtani is not a good fit for the Angels. They need a starting pitcher (he won’t pitch in 2024) and need to keep DH open to spell Trout. Trout is at a point in his career where he needs DH at bats. If Rendon ever got off his couch, he’d also need DH at bats.

In a not so weird way, is Ohtani a good fit for any team? If two way players fit in to baseball’s model, wouldn’t they be prevalent throughout MLB?

In the past, guys like the Babe, Stan the Man and John Olerud settled on just hitting. Maybe it’s time for Ohtani to make a choice?

Missippi…exactly…Correa wasn’t worth the price for sure, and believe, even though all Giants fans wanted Judge, they dodged a bullet there. His contract imo won’t age well. Go trade for Alonso, try for Bellinger and Ohtani. Land a top talent starter and they should be able to compete. That’s a lot of work though for one off season. Zaidi and his seat must be feeling the heat. This is his biggest offseason yet. If he fails, he’s gone.

Pick of FO jobs? Go back & take a look at this 1st two years as GM of this club & understand how he failed to give this team the depth it needed to compete. The players he signed like Legares, Wade, Velazquez. Duffy, Syndegaard et al plus mined & pined for castoffs like Villar, Eaton & others. I mean…the man talks a good game & keeps speaking to the urgency of things but then signs players that in no way (besides Drury this past season) have helped this club to compete.

Perry has been pretty bad as a GM for the Angels. This season’s trade deadline was an absolute catastrophe. He traded the team’s better prospects (from an already thin farm system), then waived the majority of the acquired veterans just weeks later.

Perry will be joining his predecessor Eppler soon as an unemployed former GM..

        No.

They’ll bring in a young manager that they can build with for the next 5-8 years.

Perry has put together a terrific farm system, loaded with young pitching. They have their long-term C and SS in place, those are the 2 most important defensive positions.

Whether or not Ohtani stays the Angels are going to be a contending team for a long time. Minasian came from the Braves. He’s doing the exact same thing with the Angles that they did for long-term contention.

Braves system has been bare the past three years. It’s been made to look much better with Strider and Harris. In the years prior to that, they always had one of the top systems. They were able to use what was left to acquire Olson and Murphy. They capitalized on players who were heralded to get those guys before being exposed at MLB level (Pache, Langilers, Mueller). Angels could have received quite a haul for Adell two years ago. Instead, they’ve let him rot away in the Minors. Then they trade away prospects at the deadline for guys who can’t play (Escobar) and guys they let end up releasing. Comparing their system to the Braves is comical at this point.

Perry was an assistant with the Braves he didn’t built crap with them, the farm system that you think so highly is ranked 28th and non of their teams except the 66ers have made the post season. With all the players they brought up they kept losing except for the A’s. He does not have a good track record.

You’re probably right. Arte is one of the worst owners in MLB with his intervening.

At some point Perry will leave and get carte blanche to do what needs to be done for a franchise. Same as happened to AA after Mark Shapiro showed up above him on he management chart – AA quit, sat in as some sort of advisor with the Dodgers for a year or two, took over the Braves rebuild and sent it into overdrive.

There IS conspiracy by these writers who are pushing Ohtani xlfever and the idea that ANY baseball player deserves to be paid that much money.

    They are devaluing the dollar.
They are making Americans look misguided, irresponsible and no longer worthy to be the leaders of the free world.

They are misusing the power of the press just because they can.
    Baseball, produces nothing tangible.
They might as well be working for.the Russians or Chinese…..

I call them disloyal. I would specify but I would get banned for not being a total PC.

We’ve seen the absurd narrative of 500-600M contract for a player who’s had TJ surgery (maybe twice now) and will be 30 next year. Great, great player; absurd, absurd contract.

Not an American problem alone. The top 3 highest paid athletes aren’t even American.. And only 5 of the top 10 are American. Ohtani generates $30M in additional overseas sales. He generates bigger tickets. Bigger merchandise sales inside the US. Even if he gets $50M a year it’s a bargain. No one comes close to generating the extra revenue that he does.

Truth be told, with all the young pitching Perry drafted that has been moving along through the minors (a few years ago he drafted nothing but pitchers), bringing in O’Hoppe to handle the pitching staff, and with Neto looking like a young SS to build around – Catcher and SS are the 2 foundational positions on a baseball team – Perry has the Angels set-up to be long-term contenders.

Whether Ohtani stays or not doesn’t really matter. Minasian has the Angels set up to be a contending team for at least the next 5 years starting in 2025. This is no different than the Braves did in their rebuild when Minasian was with them.

By bringing up the youngsters the Angels may well be able to afford to pay both Trout and Ohtani. It looks that that was their master plan years ago and they’re playing it out.

Minassian had almost nothing to do with any Braves “rebuild”. Acuna, Wright, Fried, Albies and Riley were already there in 2017. Nearly everyone else came later. The 2018 and 2019 drafts were flops. About all he could get any credit for is drafing Strider and Elder is 2020. His 2021 and 2022 drafts for the Angels look pretty weak. I fail to see any basis for thinking he’s a particularly good GM.

Samuel – you consistently bring up the 2021 draft of all pitchers, but I doubt that you actually bother keeping up with the Angels farm system; especially as you are in complete denial of how bad it is.

Below are all 20 pitchers drafted by the Angels in 2021. With the exception of Silseth and Bachman, there’s hardly much to get excited about.

1 Sam Bachman — 3.18 ERA with Angels (shoulder surgery)
2 Ky Bush — Traded to White Sox
3 Landon Marceaux — Traded to Mets
4 Luke Murphy — 4.96 ERA in AA this season
5 Brett Kerry — 4.60 ERA between AA/AAA this season
6 Jake Smith — 10.86 ERA in A+ ball this season
7 Ryan Costeiu — missed entire 2023 season due to injury
8 Nick Jones — 3.27 ERA in AAA/AA/A+ this season

It won’t come down to money. Both the Dodgers and Mets will pay him whatever he wants. Ohtan wants to play for a winner. The Dodgers will offer him the opportunity to play in the playoffs every year for the rest of his career. And for that reason alone he will be a Dodger— and be paid a ridiculous amount of money. No need for him to struggle in Anaheim any longer.

Sarcasm aside…and excluding the pandemic year…
Last year and I’m betting this year are the first times the Angels haven’t drawn more than 3 million fans in 20+ years.
    Last year was 2.4 mil.
So yeah, they’ve lost at least 600,000 fans here.
But man were they huge in Japan the last 2 years.

Well, you’re close. The first time they drew 3 M+ was 2003. They exceeded the 3 M mark then for 17 straight years. Surprisingly that dropped to 1.51 M in 2021, and was 2.64 this season.

cookmeister 2, Yeah, you’re right. I forgot about that. I was surprised when I looked at how the Padres did compared to the rest of league. The team page at BB Ref, had it at 1.51 M, but they had it at almost 2.2. M elsewhere. Which is what ESPN had them as well. So that 1.51 M is erroneous.

In 2001 there were still COVID protocols to start the season in California.

They will have an even greater drop off when they lose the Asian fans who will follow Ohtani over to Dodger Stadium. And then the fans like me who have spent thousands through the years are going to watch at home and not spend anymore money until they treat the fans with respect and field a competitive team. This team finished 4th. Enough of this bologna.

Signing Ohtani would be the worst thing he could do if the contract is a record breaker

Who is responsible for hiring Nevin? That’s who needs to be replaced. I suspect Nevin was Minasian’s choice. This team needs a complete over haul in the coaching staff.

Going into a season. A manager should not have to guess who his closer is. He shouldn’t have to guess who his high leverage relievers are and shouldn’t be forced to throw away more than a half dozen games figuring out who is who.

It blows my mind how few people understand this. I talk about it every year, get slammed every year, and people think it won’t be a problem next year.

Next year wind be any different. Estevez and Joyce are not the answer. Neither can keep hitters off base.

Nevin was the perfect foil for Minasian.
Unlike Joe M, Minasian could meddle in the club house and impose his decisions on Nevin, without pushback.

Nevein was only a placeholder on a one-year bridge deal while Moreno sold the team. He was never the long term choice.

I got a feeling Ohtani is going to San Francisco after the Giants missed out on several big name free agents recently despite strong offers.

Or he’ll pass on them too.

Seriously, they should have the payroll space and they have a nice local TV deal that is not with Bally’s. Plus there is a huge Asian community there.

      Stranger things have happened.

If by the Giants you mean the Dodgers– I agree. Don’t overthink it. Ohtani, Betts and Freeman become the best lineup in the game. The following year they get him on the mound and he can replace Kershaw. The Dodgers can pay whatever they have to and they will. The Giants cannot offer first place every year and a chance at a championship for the rest of his career.

      …..

Which is why at some point Perry will leave to actually run an MLB organization the way he wants to.

Until then he’s putting together a very good group of players.

“…that he couldn’t say whether or not ownership would be willing to replicate the club’s 2023 payroll…

That says it all. Payroll will be back down to Moreno’s comfort zone of about 180m. I’d be surprised if Ohtani is even considering the Angels for his future. The quote will go something like this: “We have confidence in the young players we’ve drafted in the last few seasons to get us to the playoffs in 2024.” That will be the talking point until Moreno sells the team.

Whatever the payroll is they won’t have enough pitching. No number one, number two, or number three starters. That won’t move them closer to a wild card let alone winning the division. It’s pathetic. Why Trout wants to stay at age 32 is beyond me. I’m still not sold. When Ohtani leaves reality will set in and I think he asks to be moved.

So, on the MLB site, Minasian is quoted as saying that they’re going to do a full “autopsy” of the organization. What’s he suggesting? You certainly can’t breathe life back into a corpse!
