Yankees, Giants Expected To Pursue Jung Hoo Lee

By Anthony Franco | November 20, 2023 at 9:26pm CDT

South Korean outfielder Jung Hoo Lee is one of the more intriguing players who’ll be available in this year’s free agent class. The Kiwoom Heroes will make him available to MLB teams via the posting system at some point in the next few weeks.

In an appearance on the MLB Network this afternoon, Jon Morosi suggested the Yankees and Giants are likely to pursue Lee once his free agency opens (X link). It’s not surprising that either team would have interest. Previous reports have indicated San Francisco and New York had done scouting work on Lee during his run in the Korea Baseball Organization. He fits the profile that both teams are known to be targeting this winter.

Lee, 25, is a left-handed hitting center fielder. A hit-over-power offensive player, Lee posted an OPS north of .900 in each season between 2020-22. He won the KBO MVP award with a .349/.421/.575 showing in ’22 but had a disappointing platform year. Lee’s power production plummeted; he hit only six home runs while slugging .455 over 86 games and 387 trips to the plate. His season ended in July when a left ankle injury required surgery. That came with an estimated three month rehab process, so it’s not expected to affect his availability for Spring Training.

While that’s clearly not the season Lee envisioned preceding his jump to the majors, he’ll still be a target for various teams. He’s atypically young for a free agent. Evaluators praise his pure contact skills and strike zone awareness, although there could be some division among teams about whether he projects as an MLB center fielder. Lee’s fringe power would be more alarming if a club feels he’s a better defensive fit in the corner outfield.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told reporters at the GM Meetings they’d like to add two outfielders — ideally ones who hit from the left side. Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi has suggested that adding athleticism to their outfield is an offseason priority. Not coincidentally, those clubs are generally speculated as strong fits for Cody Bellinger. Lee is a riskier bet without a body of work against big league pitching but isn’t going to approach Bellinger’s contract.

Of course, there’ll be more teams involved once the posting process gets underway. The Padres have previously been tied to Lee, while teams like the Mariners, Nationals and Royals make sense on paper. Seattle needs corner outfield help and is looking for high-contact hitters. Washington and Kansas City have short-term uncertainty in the outfield and could view Lee as a candidate for a free agent strike as they look to pull out of rebuilds. Given his youth, he’d align better with their competitive timelines than would most free agents.

Of course he’s a question mark after a down season and a surgical repair.

Yes, he’s a left handed bat with a high average and okay power.

But still something of a question mark.

    Meh.

    Maybe?

This guy, Lee, has a nice level, good looking swing on his highlight reel. Other than that I’ve never seen him play.

I think there’s also some ‘addition by subtraction’ stuff going on for the Yankees and the unclogging of their log jams of albatrosses and bad gambles like Hicks, Donaldson, IKF, Bader, etc. will free them up to pick up complimentary short term pieces that will perform adequately enough or they’ll hopefully actually get lucky with some of these prospects they call up with high hopes.

Up this point, these Oswald Peraza/Oswaldo Cabrera types aren’t really living up to the hype, but I have to believe the Yankees have a few guys in their minors who can actually sustain major league success at league average production or better across their offensive and defensive games.

Sadly, Jasson Dominguez will not be able to show his stuff in 2024, but this guy Lee could bridge a gap to 2025.
What i find incredible is Lee’s walk to strikeout ratio, particularly over the last few years. Good bat to ball skills, which may not carry over to baseball in the states, but heck, I’d love to see more hit and run baseball than swinging first the fences and missing.

Bridging a gap is one thing- we bridge that one year gap and then we’re stuck paying a guy tens of millions when a league minimum potential all star returns and needs playing time.

I’d rather find someone who will take like 1 year/$20M or something than to pay that posting fee and sign Lee to a deal potentially worth like 8 years/$200M, with 7 years and $175M left on it, on top of the posting fee that would be like $30M or something.

**I realize now he’s going to be a pretty cheap player no matter what, but even at 4 years/$50M I don’t want to be stuck with another 3 years/$37.5M plus an $8M or so posting fee for a guy who’d be more of a stop gap for the Yankees.

That’s my point- they probably won’t do that. They’ll probably either spend nothing and call up a prospect or sign a dirt cheap journeyman, or they’ll sign a guy to a 1-2 year deal for something modest- kinda like when they gave Youkilis 1 year/$12M or when they took a flier on Matt Carpenter last year- and hope to get surplus value from an undervalued or moderately valued player for one season.

So signing someone to a 1 year deal seems likely. Like a Tommy Pham for 1 year/$7M or something.

Unless I am missing something, it will be Dominguez, Lee & Judge. It doesn’t feel like you are stuck paying anyone.

And I think the call on Lee is only $50M/5, not $200M.

I’m not sure why it is a bridge. The NYY still need an OF, and probably a CF, when Dominguez returns.

Someone suggested Lee as a bridge. You are correct, Lee likely is being looked at as an alternative to Soto or Bellinger. Although, given Judge’s health history, Jasson’s unavailability, and questions as to whether Stanton is going to be useful at all, I’m not sure signing TWO good outfielders non-bridge deals is completely crazy.

Why Judge health history are you talking about…..he played 148, 152 leading up to 102 last year when he got derailed by a bad gate in LA……for a big guy, he’s displayed some pretty good durability so not sure about your comment……

I agree. They not only need Lee (or his equivalent), but there is a solid argument for a solid, but short-term, #4 OF. It just isn’t worth it to play Stanton in the field any more, and Jasson is no lock to come be completely healthy.

I see him going to the Giants or the Padres.

We still don’t know if the Padres are going to increase or decrease payroll. Idiots on both sides will say they know, but they don’t. Plus things could change — or not change — with a new control person.

But Jung Hoo Lee is a good fit for the Padres either with them keeping Soto or trading Soto away. Lee is probably going to get 4 years at 12 million per year or five years at $10 million per year. The Padres will have a full year of Tatis Jr. and I expect Tatis to have a monster year in 2024 if he avoids doing anything stupid in the off-season.

Jung Hoo Lee also works for the Giants. Austin Slater is a 4th or 5th outfielder. Neither Yastrzemski not Conforto are Magic Mikes. Both of them like Haniger have been out a lot. And one of them can slot in DH if Flores and Davis play infield. Giants sure look like a fourth place team with the Rockies staying in the cellar.

Lee is a good fit for Giants especially solid CF defense. Hopefully his bat can hit MLB pitchers.

Need to make sure Lee has fully recovered from ankle surgery last July. Don’t need another Correa situation.

The Padres have a very active scouting team in Korea and are in need of a left handed bat, but they need pitching so much more than an outfielder so I feel like it’s probably not a good fit even though plenty of writers have boxed in this as a fit…

Grisham will be traded in the coming weeks and the Padres need a high contact/OBP OF with speed for Soto, Tatis, Machado, and Bogaerts to drive in. Lee fits the Padres need extremely well.

Pitching is plentiful this offseason and much like last offseason, the Padres are in need of back of the rotation starters. Guys that spent the 2023 season in Asia like Rodriguez, Apopko and Fedde, and lower-level FA in the US can ably fill those spots for a relatively small investment.

I would love for this to be the case, but they need middle of the rotation and bullpen, and in my mind to not trade soto. But we are talking about the Padres, maybe Preller pulls it all off:))

Lee is a former teammate and best friend of Ha Seong Kim. Lee is often seen in Korea wearing Padres gear, specifically that with Kim’s name on it. Preller made personal trips to Korea to meet with him and see him play in 2022 and early in the 2023 season and the Padres have a good relationship with the Kiwoom
Heroes, the team Lee has played for. .

Lee makes contact but lacks power. His bat would die in Safeco Field. I think the best fit for the Mariners would be Lourdes Gurriel Jr.. He is right handed and can play OF, 1B, 2B or SS. This would give the M’s some defensive options and a backup to JP Crawford. He makes good contract and doesn’t strike out much. I would put Lourdes Gurriel Jr. in LF and move Kelenic to RF. HIs contract should be reasonable for the budget conscious M’s.
