Tigers Sign Andrew Chafin

By Nick Deeds | December 12, 2023 at 1:55pm CDT

December 12: The Tigers have now made it official, announcing their deal with Chafin and the details on the $1.25MM in annual incentives. In both 2024 and 2025, Chafin can get $125K for 50 games pitched, $250K each for 55 and 60 games pitched, $300K for 65 games pitched and $325K for 70 games pitched.

December 10: The Tigers are reportedly in agreement with left-hander Andrew Chafin on a one-year deal that includes a club option for the 2025 season, according to Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press. Petzold goes on to note that the contract comes with a $4.25MM base salary in 2024 that could reach $5.5MM with incentives. The club option, worth $6.5MM, could reach $7.75MM with incentives and comes with a $500K buyout, raising the contract’s total guarantee to $4.75MM.

It’s a reunion for the veteran lefty, who pitched in 64 games with the Tigers in 2022. Chafin, 34 in June, was a first-round pick by the Diamondbacks in the 2011 draft and made his big league debut not long after in 2014. He’d go on to play in Arizona for six-and-a-half seasons as a solid left-handed middle relief option, pitching to a 3.74 ERA in 306 innings of work with the Diamondbacks before being shipped to the Cubs at the trade deadline in 2020. During his time in Arizona, Chafin struck out 25.8% of batters faced while routinely posting groundball rates north of 50%. The lefty’s 2020 season was limited by injury woes to just 9 2/3 innings, but that didn’t stop Chicago from retaining him on the roster headed into the 2021 season.

2021 proved to be a breakout season for Chafin, who dominated in 43 appearances with the Cubs as one of the club’s primary set-up men to Craig Kimbrel alongside Ryan Tepera. Early in the 2021 season, Chafin combined with Tepera, Kimbrel and starting pitcher Zach Davies to no-hit the Dodgers for the first combined no-no in Cubs history. While Chafin helped to make history in Chicago, it wound up being little more than a footnote in his dominant 2021 campaign. The southpaw’s 24.7% strikeout rate and 50% groundball rate with the Cubs that year produced an impressive 2.06 ERA and 2.69 FIP. Upon a midseason trade to Oakland, Chafin unlocked another gear, posting a microscopic 1.53 ERA in 29 1/3 innings down the stretch to bring his overall season ERA down to just 1.83 over 68 2/3 innings of work. That performance was good for a whopping 229 ERA+.

Chafin’s strong 2021 campaign earned him a two-year guarantee in Detroit that included an opt-out after the first year of the deal. Though not as dominant as his 2021 campaign, Chafin put up strong numbers for the Tigers in 2022 with a 2.83 ERA and 3.06 FIP across 57 1/3 innings of work. His strikeout rate ticked up to 27.6% while he induced grounders 51.3% of the time. The solid performance backed up by excellent peripherals persuaded Chafin to opt-out of the final year and $6.5MM of his contract in Detroit last offseason. That decision ultimately did not go well, as Chafin signed with his original team in Arizona for just $6.25MM guaranteed last year after lingering on the free agent market until mid-February.

The veteran lefty went on to struggle in 2023, posting a 4.73 ERA and 4.01 FIP across 51 1/3 innings of work split between the Diamondbacks and Brewers last year. Chafin’s 28.1% strikeout rate was as good as ever, but he generated a groundball rate of just 38.5% while walking a career-high 12.5% of batters faced. Despite Chafin’s struggles in his age-33 season last year, the signing could prove wise for a Tigers club that was known to be interested in adding a lefty reliever to its bullpen should he find a way to either cut down on the walks or rediscover the proclivity for grounders he demonstrated in recent years.

Not really the guy doesn’t even like baseball. Which he has even admitted on TV he does it because he is somewhat good and he can make a lot of money doing it. He was absolutely terrible with the Brewers last year. Never made any adjustments to try and turn it around.

Bro, the Reds signed Martinez, Candelario, and a reliever. That’s actually pretty solid in my opinion. Especially for how quiet the Reds were the past 3 off-seasons.

Getting a fifth starter/long relief option, a reliever that has been up and dow and a guy they really didn’t need, while not filling tge most immediate need, does not mean success by any means.

They are going nowhere with a bunch of five inning pitchers and so so relief options between them and the closer.

Sad to see them waste a good young team.

Nick Martinez has actually been pretty stellar the past two seasons, I see him as more of a 3 or 4 starter than a 5. Candelario was kind of a surprise for me too considering the depth of infielders, but maybe they package Noelvi marte , Spencer Steer, or Elly De La Cruz with some other prospects for a top of the rotation guy, the Off-season is still young. This is the Reds after all and they don’t usually have large payrolls so I’d be pretty stoked if I was a Reds fan, although I can understand your frustration.

Says the guy whose team has a bunch of young fragile guys for pitchers, overvalues their prospects and has only signed Candelario who they did not need and last I checked cannot pitch. Have fun golfing this year while the Tigers beat the Twinkies out for the AL Central with all those terrible players they signed!

Awesome signing. Solid lefty when he’s on. Fetter really helped him last time he was there, he seemed to like Detroit and he brings character. I like it. Now just need another starter and an impact bat IF there is one to be had. Much better offseason so far this year than last.

Wentz won’t make the rotation, but he has an outside chance of making the bullpen. He’s out of minor league options, if they send him down, they risk losing him on waivers… Wouldn’t be a big loss.

Gotta be at least one more depth starter out there. West Village Tiger mentioned Lorenzen, or maybe a Fetter project with Flaherty or gamble on Mahle? I’m not hopeful they sign or trade for a big bat but at the same time I want to see what Malloy and Keith have to offer and blocking Jung doesn’t make sense.

If we do grab another righty for depth, Jakob Junis makes sense as he was a project for Harris in the past. He was more of a swingman/spot-starter in 2023 but should be capable of giving you 100 innings. He’s basically a cheaper and shorter-term version of Lorenzen.

The bullpen is pretty solid… Lange, Foley, Chafin, Vest, Holton… that’s 5 very solid pitchers. Probably a starter that gets bumped down… Gipson-Long? I would take a gamble on Yuki Matsui as a lefty reliever. He was a closer in Japan… here he would be more of a closer out of a jam type pitcher. He might need some low stress innings to get his feet wet in the majors. If he does well, then he could be the future closer or a huge trade piece.

I have some concerns about Maeda in the rotation. I think he’s a good fit, just not sure about how many innings he can deliver. I would try and find another starter and have Olson or Mize start the year at AAA. At least until there is an injury.
I would go after Imanaga the lefty from Japan.

Olsen has some wicked stuff that plays. Unless he has a terrible spring camp, he’s a #4or #5 all day. Mize coming back from TJ is a question mark for me.

I actually wouldnt be shocked if they pursued Shōta Imanaga. They’ve said they would pursue different routes in acquiring talent, and to me, he’s the only one on the market at this point that makes any sense to me.

There’s going to be a nice scrum this spring training in the competition for 2B, 3B & OF. Time to separate the men from the boys. I am very curious to see what Colt & Malloy can do.

I expect them to do that, too. They will maximize their options, so unless Wentz stinks it up in Spring Training, I can see them putting Wentz in the pen to start the season and sending Faedo to Toledo. They may send Faedo down anyway to stretch into a starter if he’s made progress on his 3rd pitch.

Sawyer Gibson-Long & Olson finished strong last year. I wouldn’t mind both those guys in the rotation.

Good signing him back as another left handed gun. They know him and can help get him back to how he was with them. Detroit appears to be making all the right moves as this is another big developmental year for them.

It’s the season their young arms need to finally get up and pitch 150 innings, while staying healthy. Making more improvements in the hitting department too. They need to play 500 or better while going positive on runs scored over allowed.

Stupid Mets couldn’t sign Chafin for that ? Instead they signed 4 no name relievers

This is proof that you should strap a baseball into your kid’s left hand moments after birth. Lefty relievers, even guys who stunk the joint up so badly that they get left off the playoff roster, are worth good money.

Solid if not spectacular signing. He pitched well for the Tigers, and fairly decent for the D-Backs. Tigers also need another LHP in their bullpen so check that off their shopping list.

Watched him pitch great for DET and glad they resigned him. I think he’ll be much better now that he’s reunited with pitching coach Chris Fetterer.

Loved him on the cubs. At least I live in Michigan and can still watch. Quality arm in the pen guy.

If the Mets were sort of going for it in 2024 they would have signed Chafin and Kirby Yates.

Doesn’t mean they’re not sort of going for it in 2024, but these are two data points hinting they’re not.

It can’t be that the recent additions are other than AAA wait staff, can it? That would be some serious punting.

Where’s even one meaningful acquisition? It gets late early in Queens.

The Tigers are managing their 25 and 40 man rosters incorrectly.
They FEAR cutting someone who might become productive someplace else, thus, are backed up on the 40 and 25.

There are so many quality pitchers this year.
An eight man rotation is possible….trading down to 5 at the end of the season, keeping the youthful starters in the minors until they replace the guys you’ve traded….is possible.

The Tiger can build the team while winning. I don’t understand WHY people.think it has to be all one way or all another….. they are doing it all wrong and you don’t need a college degree to know how it is working.

Just because the Twins, the Sox, the “Guardians ” and the Royals are cheap stinking too, doesn’t mean the Tigers doing well…..
They are not putting in thier best effort because they can get away with it.

This is the best team we’ve had to root for in a DECADE….
THAT OUGHT TO TELL US SOMETHING

Greene is expected to open the season as designated hitter for a few months to let his arm heal.

Gipson-Long as sixth starter or starting in Toledo. You need 8 starters now.

Hope he has a good relationship with Hinch since he’ll be the one responsible for any bonus. Those types of bonuses are the front office’s best friend that can easily be manipulated with one phone call.
