Angels To Sign Matt Moore

By Steve Adams and Anthony Franco | January 23, 2024 at 11:21pm CDT

The Angels are in agreement with reliever Matt Moore on a $9MM contract, reports Jon Heyman of the New York Post (X link). Moore, a client of Apex Baseball, will sign with the Halos for a second straight offseason. He inked a one-year, $7.55MM deal with the Angels last winter.

The first run in Anaheim was a good one for the now 34-year-old Moore, who’s enjoying a nice second act of his career since moving to the bullpen. In 44 innings with the Angels during the 2023 season, the veteran southpaw notched an excellent 2.66 earned run average. Moore logged a strong 28% strikeout rate against a lower-than-average 6.9% walk rate.

The Halos wound up waiving Moore in August, but not due to his performance. Rather, the Angels made a last-ditch effort to get under the luxury tax threshold with a mass waiver purge just weeks after an aggressive, win-now trade deadline. Moore, Lucas Giolito, Reynaldo Lopez, Hunter Renfroe, Randal Grichuk, Dominic Leone and Tyler Anderson all wound up on waivers in hopes that another club would take their contracts (not all were claimed).

Moore was quickly snapped up by the Guardians as they made their own last-minute push, claiming Giolito in addition to Moore. His stint with Cleveland only lasted 4 2/3 innings, as the Guards waived Moore themselves to save some cash after they, too, fell out of postseason contention. The Marlins scooped Moore up and enjoyed four shutout innings for him down the stretch.

Overall, Moore finished out a bizarre 2023 season with a 2.56 ERA, 27.5% strikeout rate and vastly improved 6.9% walk rate in 52 2/3 innings between the three teams. That marked Moore’s second consecutive year of productive pitching following a move to the bullpen. He turned in a 1.95 ERA for the Rangers in 2022 after signing a minor league deal. When combining the two seasons, Moore touts a 2.20 ERA with five saves, 36 holds, a 27.4% strikeout rate and 10.3% walk rate in 126 2/3 innings.

It’s a strong second act for the southpaw, who’d struggled as a starter for the few seasons preceding his bullpen move. It has clearly impressed Halos GM Perry Minasian and his staff, who have added him on a notable one-year pact in consecutive years. That’s in line with a broad willingness to attack the relief corps on free agency.

Los Angeles has signed five relievers this winter. Their first three acquisitions — Luis Garcia, Adam Kolarek and Adam Cimber — were fairly modest one-year deals. In recent days, they’ve been more aggressive. The Angels finalized a three-year, $33MM pact with Robert Stephenson this afternoon. Moore adds a lefty option to a relief group that otherwise figures to lean heavily on righties Carlos Estevez, Stephenson, Garcia, Ben Joyce and Jose Soriano.

The Angels are now up to roughly $172MM in payroll commitments for the upcoming season, as calculated by Roster Resource. That’s still well shy of last year’s $212MM Opening Day mark. Minasian and his staff very likely aren’t finished. They’ve been tied to various possibilities in both the lineup and the starting rotation. There’s still opportunity for the Angels to continue adding in the next few weeks.

The Angels have been investing quite a bit in their bullpen this offseason for a team that is going nowhere fast any time soon. I guess if nothing else, Moore should be good trade bait for them at the deadline.

The off-season is still going. They sign a top FA SP and get big bat for RF or DH, they could make the playoffs. That coaching staff didn’t come here to rebuild.

What if they add Montgomery, Clevinger and Justin Turner or Adam Duvall– suddenly things are looking up with a surplus they can trade from. I believe they will sign one of either Snell, Montgomery or Bellinger. Then backfill the rest. if they sign Snell then they will look at two bats like Duvall and Turner and then trade from their outfield surplus for a second starter. That would change the whole dynamic of the team. Or if they sign Bellinger and Duvall then they sign a Clevinger or Ryu and trade for a second starter with their surplus.

I think Anderson is a good fit. Is Neto going to play the whole year? How’s his back? Drury and Rengifo are not good defensive players.

They can mix and match DH, Third, First,

I’d much rather do that and spend a fortune on Bellinger. who doesn’t walk or hit the ball hard.

Montgomery will turn into Anderson. Clevinger has baggage, Arte will never go for it, but I wouldn’t mind.

          The others are interesting.

But my choice would be Anderson. Does any of us really now the health of Neto, and neither Drury or Rengifo or adequate second baseman.

I wouldn’t want clevinger and plesac on the same team, they would find away to screw it up. Guardians split them up for a reason. Rengifo best position is 2nd, wouldn’t surprise me if they plan on drury taking some playing time for schanuel also dh. But yeah they need someone that can play shortstop.

Halo11Fan , I also like Anderson and think he and Rengifo will benefit the most defensively from Washington. Anderson said he is willing to play 2B and would just give Washington lots of, hopefully, really good options for the infield even with injuries. Anderson has been link to the Angels this offseason as well.
I really like this coaching staff and think this will have a BIG impact on this team. The new pitching coach already knew of problems has seen with a few starting pitchers. I also saw a rumor that he said Anderson was tipping his pitches.

fwiw, Drury’s OAA and OPS+ last year were +5 and 114, respectively. By comparison, Anderson’s were -2 and 60. Anderson doesn’t play defense well, doesn’t walk and has no pop. How are you suggesting the Angels utilize Anderson vs Drury and super sub Rengifo who had an OPS+ of 111 and played 2B, 3B, SS, LF, CF and RF?

However we want to slice it, from Trea Turner, Pete Alonso, Mike Trout, and Tim Anderson, several (not all) of the WBC US players had subpar performances in the 2023 MLB season.

The US players, especially, were not prepared to go full-bore in March. That premature ramp-up definitely showed in the regular season. A guy like Mookie Betts prevailed, but if you look at that roster as a whole, there’s definitely a trend.

Tim Anderson has the perfect make-up to rebound. He has an athletic 6’1, 185lb body to last through his 30s. He has up the middle versatility and double digit SBs. He was on a sinking White Sox ship last year and is a perfect fit for the Angels. Drury is a FA next year and Anderson can slide right into 2B immediately. They need to get this done.

Stymie, I don’t really get this.

          1) How many pitchers have been worth four years?
          2) How many years did the Angels offer Cole.
          3) How many years did he offer Greinke?
          4) How many years did he offer Weaver?
          5) How often would one starting pitcher would have made a difference?

When Arte doesn’t offer four years, he’s almost always right, when he does, other owners out spend him.

I think it’s an unfair criticism.

Rexhudler86- If Anderson plays well enough he could get a lot of playing time. splitting time backing SS and 2B especially if Drury is needed elsewhere, injuries exedra. It won’t be a starting gig so that might be a problem. As you indicated it is less than 3 weeks till Catchers & pichers. The Dodgers are even less, like 2 weeks 2 days.

Angels SP were league average last season. 4.47 ERA and 4.52 FIP. The RP on the other hand had a 4.88 ERA and 4.83 FIP.

Yes, the staff will be missing Ohtani. I still think that with regression towards the mean for Anderson, a solid season from Detmers, and more time with Silseth and Bachman in the majors that the staff will be strong.

Bellinger doesn’t walk and doesn’t hit the ball hard. And his year last year was good, but not that good. He’d be a terrible signing.

And I don’t think you guys would like watching Snell pitch.

Halo11Fan- Snell DID go 6 a lot and that is something. He IS similar to Sandoval in someways. He is not perfect but he is the one I would pick if I could pick one guy. If you could add him and Anderson I think that would be enough to make the playoffs. They have lots of rotation depth including. Daniel, Plesac, Suarez, Bachman, and Silseth and will go to a 5 man. They would have lots of talented infield depth. There is less depth in the OF , but a number of the infielders also can play the OF. DH will provide rest and a chance to infuse playing time if they don’t have so many injuries.

That is the type of short term contract that Arte would approve. It would improve the depth. The Angels really just need one starter since they are going with a 5 man rotation.

Now he’s picking up every pitcher he can find when that’s what he should of been doing 5 years ago. Like Babarino used to say” I’m soooo Confuuuuused! But not any Moore ( see what I did?) confused by what the Cubs aren’t doing.

Along with Stephenson, Soriano, Estevez, Joyce, the back end is stacking up pretty nicely.

It would be nice to have another starting pitcher, but only Montgomery and Snell strike me as significant and reliable. And expensive.

After that, FA starters that are good but have question marks include Clevinger, Lorenzen, Ryu.

Guys returning from injury but with previous success include Turnbull and Velasquez.

It may just be that Detmers, Canning, Sandoval, Silseth, and Anderson/Suarez are the best options available.

How is the status quo the best option? Clevinger and Ryu are significant upgrades and affordable on short term deals. Snell and Montgomery are huge upgrades and Snell is a better pitcher than Ohtani. Our ERA last year was at the bottom. This pen will help.

How is Ryu a significant upgrade? He has only made 18 starts in the last 2 seasons. He made $20 million last season. How is he affordable?

I don’t mind signing him, because it would be a one year deal, but not sure that he is anything more than a bandaid at the backend of the rotation.

Who do we have currently that’s better than Ryu? Sandoval has only 17 wins in 5-years? Detmers won a whopping 4-games. CAnning and his nearly 4..50ERA? Silseth? Anderson? Who? Of course it’s an upgrade and Ryu isn’t getting $20M– probably $12-15M. If he’s healthy it’s a huge upgrade.

        Reply
      • johnnyangel

People forget that Detmers, Sandoval, Canning, and Silseth ALL finished with ERA+ above league average. Suarez did the two previous seasons. Anderson also is just one season removed from a solid campaign.

Look, they’re not great, but they’re not awful.

I agree that Snell and Montgomery would be significant upgrades, but they will also be very expensive and need long term deals. Are they worth it? Sure? Maybe? It kinda depends on the price. But, yeah, either would help a lot!

Ryu and Clevinger are definitely good pitchers, but they have major injury concerns. Neither is the sure thing you’re making them out to be..They aren’t an upgrade if they can’t be on the mound for 25 starts.

Lorenzen is a good dude, but probably not an upgrade over what is already on hand on the Angels roster.

So the upside of the Angels young pitchers may still be better than the question marks of Ryu, Clevinger, or Lorenzen. That’s all I’m saying. It’s fine if you disagree.

The starters are all middle/back end guys. I would put them 3rd tier with Boston, Cleveland, and Detroit.

I’m just saying it’s not far fetched. I think fourth the right prediction, but I wold bet even money the Angels don’t finish fourth.

I think there is more talent than you think. But why would go on a thread about another team and rip that team?

I’m not really ripping them. It’s more of a baseball fans frustration that they wasted generational players. You know I see them on the cusp of being really bad. It’s a real shame.

They have been one of busiest teams in the off-season without spending a billion dollars, they have the best bullpen they’ve had in ten years probably longer, and a better coaching staff. Most of the problems last year was coaching and the blowpen. I agree with the depth in the minors being thin, because most them have made it to mlb talking about Perry’s picks not eppler’s. They need to see what they have with the rotation Sandoval had a sub 3 era a couple years ago. Enright was already gotten rid of the pitching script they were following last year, pointed out Anderson tipping his pitches, and found a flaw in detmers delivery. Disclaimer I’m a angels fan, and the 2002 angels definitely had flaws, and they won so saying third place isn’t far fetched

The best pen in the last ten years is a very low bar.

But Soriano, Moore, and Stephenson do enough things well that it should be a solid pen.

Other the Joyce’s the rest have a mediocre at best track records so I think the Angels BP still has a ways to go.

Reading between the lines it looks like the club is going to go with a 5 man rotation and hope to shorten games with a stronger bullpen.

I’d still like to add a starter and a bat. Put Clevinger and Justin Turner on the roster and it looks a lot better.

Another dude that’s be8ng slept on. Moore totally redefined his career as a reliever, good for him. Guess he likes Anaheim lol.

I am encouraged by the signings of the BP arms. I hope they add additional SP (or 2) and more depth to the lineup. Hopefully none of them are long term, a la Bellinger to a 10 yr, that could possibly strap the Angels in the same manner Puljos did.

The Angels have a solid core of young talent. I am hopeful that a few of them develop into All Star caliber (Salmon and Anderson type), and the others are solid pieces (Kennedy and Molina type), then you have the opportunity to be playoff contenders year in and year out.

Minassian seems to be doing a great job with adding possible AAA depth with Calhoun, Dozier, Cimber, Sano, Martin, Wallach and Mejia, a couple of them may end up down in SLC.

Sonorawind, I think you missed the point regarding 100 pitches in six innings. He doesn’t attack and doesn’t have quick AB.

It’s not just the six innings. It’s the number of pitches.

I don’t think fans are going to enjoy watching him. His BB% is well above league average.

Angels should go full super bullpen. Add Neris and maybe Ottavino and they can cut the Starters to 4-5 innings.

Hippo, what do you mean cut their innings to 4-5 innings per game. That’s basically what Angel starters have been doing over the last few years which is part of the reason why the bullpen gets thrashed year in and year out…. Over use.

Cut the expectations and plan for 4-5ip, instead of hoping and praying they get 4-5ip. If they get more great, if not they should be ready with a stacked bullpen.

Let’s Go! We got our 2 guys in the Pen that were on the top of Angels fans list. Forget about Hader, you’ve got Moore and Stephenson for the price as one and A LOT less guaranteed money. Well done!
    Now let’s get that ace.

I’m thrilled we got Stephenson. I’m happy we got Moore.

I don’t think Estevez is any good, I’d like Soriano, Moore and Stephenson used in high leverage situations. Maybe another pitcher or two might step up, and I’d like to add one more,

But the pen, unlike it years past, has talent.

I know you don’t like estevez, and garcia. if they bomb like you suspect still puts the pen in a good spot. Worst case scenario they will be 7th inning guy’s, still don’t think estevez was that bad. last year herget was talked about being the closer, and he might not even make the team at this point.

If a pitcher doesn’t throw strikes, allows hard contact and can’t keep the ball on the ground, any success he might have is a mirage. You can do it in a small sample size, but success is not sustainable. That’s why these types of RPs are volatile. That’s Estevez. Depending on him is foolish. He beats himself. He’ll have lucky stretches and unlucky stretches.

Garcia is different. He throws strikes, keeps the ball on the ground, he doesn’t miss bats, and he doesn’t avoid hard contact. He’s just there. Based on balls finding holes, aka luck, he’ll be inconsistent. Good stretches, bad stretches.

Neither are good for different reasons. You can’t depend on either one of them. They are like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get.

This M*M guy for some reason never learned to throw the Roger Beshens Football SLider the correct way. Bad Grip, Tilt or wrist action.
Jeffrey Springs finally got it working after many years but he hurt himself with a bad routine or bad grip, tilt or wrist action.
Too many watered down Roger Beshens football sliders, they need to reach out to him for that GTWA.

It’s a very low bar, last year it was only moore, and estevez( until the last couple months) that were any good. You got potentially 5 decent guys might be a couple surprises and a couple disappointments. I did see that high velocity guys are less volatile when it comes to advanced stats, and that’s the type perry has been targeting mostly this year

About Estevez, fly ball pitcher, hard contact, lack of control. With those peripherals it’s virtually impossible to have sustained success.

I really only see Joyce as a possible plus guy. But that doesn’t mean the other guys will stink, and it doesn’t mean they won’t have a few days of sustained success.

“…after they, too, fell out of postseason contention???” Come on, Adams. You are terrible at this. There should NEVER be commas around “too” in that situation. Straight up wrong.

I’m begging MLBTR to can this loser.
