Pirates To Sign Aroldis Chapman

By Anthony Franco | January 22, 2024 at 11:59pm CDT

The Pirates are in agreement with Aroldis Chapman, as first reported by Francys Romero (X link). It’s a one-year, $10.5MM guarantee, reports Joel Sherman of the New York Post (on X). Chapman is a Wasserman client. The deal is pending a physical; Pittsburgh will need to make a corresponding 40-man roster move once the contract is finalized.

Chapman, who turns 36 next month, lands a one-year free agent deal for the second straight offseason. Limited to a fairly modest $3.75MM guarantee from the Royals a year ago, he lands a raise on the heels of an impressive season that culminated in his second World Series win. Chapman turned in a 3.09 ERA over 58 1/3 innings, striking out a laughable 41.4% of opposing hitters. Among relievers with 50+ innings, only Orioles star closer Félix Bautista punched hitters out more frequently.

The lefty split his year between two teams. He turned in dominant results for three months in Kansas City. Over 29 2/3 frames with the Royals, he pitched to a 2.45 ERA with a 43.4% strikeout rate. That production and his affordable salary made Chapman arguably the top rental reliever on the trade market. K.C. moved early, sending him to the Rangers in a one-for-one deal for former first-round pick Cole Ragans at the end of June.

It’s the kind of result that rebuilding teams envision when signing a veteran to a one-year deal. Ragans had an excellent 12-start run to close the year and looks like a potential mid-rotation or better pitcher whom Kansas City controls for five more seasons. Texas knew they were getting a short-term acquisition, but Chapman provided them a much needed high-leverage bullpen arm.

Over 29 regular season innings in Arlington, he posted a 3.72 ERA while fanning nearly 40% of batters faced. Chapman saved four games and picked up six holds in front of nominal closer José Leclerc. He continued to pitch in meaningful games during the Rangers’ run to the first title in franchise history. He picked up six more holds in nine playoff appearances, totaling eight innings of two-run ball. That came with only six strikeouts and five walks, but Chapman wiggled out of trouble more often than not in October.

It was frequently an adventure when Chapman took the mound. While he has never had great command, his control has reached particularly worrisome levels over the last three years. He walked 14.5% of batters faced last year, the fifth-highest rate among pitchers to log at least 50 innings. That was nevertheless the southpaw’s lowest walk percentage since 2020.

While Chapman is going to hand out his share of free baserunners, he remains one of the sport’s toughest pitchers to hit when he’s around the strike zone. His four-seam fastball averaged 99 MPH last year, while his sinker sat above 101 MPH. That’s above the 97.5 MPH he averaged on the four-seam during his final season with the Yankees. His slider, which had averaged between 85-86 MPH for the previous few years, jumped to 88.1 MPH. That high-octane arsenal translated to plenty of whiffs. Only Robert Stephenson and Bautista had a lower opponents’ contact rate. Hitters put the bat on the ball on only three-fifths of their swings against Chapman.

The Bucs will live with the free passes to add that kind of swing-and-miss potential to the back of their bullpen. David Bednar is entrenched in the ninth inning. Chapman will work in a setup capacity with the ability to step into the ninth should Bednar suffer an injury. He joins Ryan Borucki as left-handed bullpen options for skipper Derek Shelton. Colin Holderman projects as Pittsburgh’s top righty setup arm.

MLBTR predicted Chapman to receive a two-year, $24MM pact. He’ll instead settle for one season. The $10.5MM salary makes him the highest-paid player on the Pittsburgh roster this year (after accounting for cash considerations from the Mariners and Braves paying down Marco Gonzales’ $12MM deal). He’s the fourth player to ink a one-year free agent deal with the Pirates this winter, joining Martín Pérez, Andrew McCutchen and Rowdy Tellez.

The deal brings Pittsburgh’s projected player payroll around $79MM, as calculated by Roster Resource. The low-payroll club opened last season with roughly $73MM in commitments, per Cot’s Baseball Contracts. They’re now set to raise spending this year, as GM Ben Cherington suggested at the beginning of the offseason, although it remains to be seen if the front office has any more room at its disposal. Pittsburgh could still seek rotation help and potentially a veteran option at second base, where they have a handful of young players (e.g. Liover Peguero, Nick Gonzales, Ji Hwan Bae) set to compete for at-bats.

Owner Bob Nutting suggested over the weekend he anticipated the team staying in the playoff mix for the entire season. Pittsburgh hasn’t reached the postseason since 2015 and hasn’t advanced to the Division Series in a decade. If that doesn’t materialize, Chapman could find himself on the rental trade market for a second straight summer.

Good young team, great city, beautiful park, bad division, likely trade mid-season or else he frees the Pirates to trade Bednar. Good all around. Players care about being on a championship contender a lot less than you think, especially the ones who have already won a ring or two.

The Pirates improved last year by 14 wins from the previous season
They have a core of young talent and even before this signing have one of the best closers in baseball

What are you smoking over there? Bad division? The Pirates are the worse team in that division now. The Reds, Brewers, Cubs or Cards could all be teams good enough to make the playoffs (obviously not all).

Only bad in comparison to all the others (except the other Central division). Reds are indeed good. The rest are mediocre at best, although the Cubs could get interesting if they open their wallet in the next month.

The Pirates started 20-8 and ended 18-13. All they need to do is win a few games in the middle. Cutch will lead the way. The future is Reynolds and Suwinski.

@running: Making the playoffs is no guarantee of being a good team. Someone could win a division with a record of .500 or worse and make the playoffs.

That’d have to be proven on the baseball first. The reds look young & promising but I’m not ready to say the division as a whole is substantially better.

Sonny Gray & 2 back end starters is all the Cards did. Cubs have lost Bellinger & Candy & added Busch & Imanaga. Brewers aren’t any better. Pirates have to prove that they’re a decent baseball team on the field—I’m not sure about that.

@TheMan, PAT’S record was skewed by a hot streak in April.

Yes, they have some intriguing talent in their lineup. That starting rotation is not gonna have them contending even in their currently weak division. Bodnar definitely looks like a top closer, but even with an elite closer he has to be given closing opportunities.

Reality is PIT is gonna have to swing a few trades or cough up some $ for pitching. Hopefully they do, it would be a shame to waste all that young position talent.

You haven’t paid attention to Pirates, if you had you would know they have turned far worse LHSP’s than Marco Gonzales and Martin Perez into above average SP’s on many occasions.

PNC may be the very best park for southpaws in all of MLB. I’m pretty sure this factored into the Chapman deal, too.

That is the only reason why the Pirates signed him. Prospect capital at the deadline. The Royals their ace Cole Ragans for Chapman at the deadline. Could work for the Pirates as well. Chapman and Bednar in the 8th and 9th is pretty respectable for the Bucs.

Don’t forget Holderman. Chapman is a risk but still performed well more than he didn’t and is still and upgrade over who will not make the end of the bullpen. I am more shocked on spending the dollars in the bullpen which IMO was their strongest group.

Growing up in the early to mid 90’s I loved going to baseball games at three rivers with the tarps over the upper deck seats that were never going to be sold, feeling great as a kid about covering my cost from random yard work or whatever because kids under 12 got in for a dollar and footlong hotdogs were a buck fifty, being born just early enough to catch the death of sunday doubleheaders and getting hooked in 98 going to Cubs and Cards games against the Bucs down the stretch knowing that Mcgwire and Sosa were gonna crush Pirates pitching at that time. As an adult I realize it was terrible for the team and the fans but that environment of casual complacency balanced with hard-core devotion from those who were going to games at that time forged my love of the game

Feel bad, Jimmy. You missed the era when indeed those seats were sold. The Pirates battles with the Phillies, Cards and Expos in the 70’s were epic. Just a great time at the ballpark with “The Lumber Company”
Then throw in occasional playoff games/series against teams like the Big Red Machine. Those were the days. Sorry you younger fans weren’t around for them

Statistics say the higher you pick the better. Except one pick that had some great players but it should work out in a larger sample size. Are you arguing mathematics? Even common sense? I can get some great items at a yard sale at noon but would do better more often going at 7 am. If I was going to a buffet they didn’t restock the food I would rather be 1st or 3rd vs 9. 9 is better than 19 sure. There won’t be any 60 grades at 9. You can only hope to turn a 55 into a 60. Slot value much lower.

Possibly trade coming? Dunno. They didn’t need a pen arm but you can’t have too many and it’s a fair contract.

Grade C. They paid the price they should have paid. I endorse the move and like it. I would endorse another starting pitcher as well. Just a 4 or 5.

Really is akin to signing an aging 3rd baseman. Like…why?
If you’re going to sign this guy for $10.5M then why not spend on a starter. Or two.

Five of their top six and 12 of their top 14 prospects are starting pitchers, and this is one of the deepest systems in the sport. Most of those guys are nearly major league ready. They’re absolutely loaded with good young starters, including the best pitching prospect in the game, Paul Skenes. They’re fine.

They’re not fine. Most those prospects won’t be here this season. Ones that are won’t be until June. They will have inning limitations. Majority will fail. Some will need TJ. You do the best you can with pitching depth but you are never fine.

There is proof that he didnt use the buzzer while the only proof that you have is that he said “dont rip my jersey” which has an explanation. First of all why the heck would he put it in his shirt where it can be visible, if he had it he would put it in his shoe or something… Second of all there is prrof he got the tatoo, in a picture from that 2019 world series you can see the unfinished tatto in a picture. Altuve said he got in california and there is a date where they played the giants that matches that.

@yourdream you have really high expectations for the Pirates this year. Normally you and I clash over opinions. This one that they will win the central or wild card, seems like a huge reach. Pirates have major concerns at starting pitcher, catcher, 1B, and RF. With Endy Rod out for the season and Davis potentially manning catcher, there is red flags flying everywhere. Then you have to wonder if Cruz will come back to his former self or be like Kendall and struggle after his horrific injury. Ankle injuries are hard to overcome and feel comfortable with afterwards. Jason Kendall was never the same after his injury. So, different type of injuries, but same potential outcome.

Then you wonder if Reynolds, Hayes, Suwinksi, and Triolo can maintain their offense and defensive presence while taking a step forward. Can McCutchen still produce at the plate? Can Keller live up to expectations and be the Ace the Pirates desperately need? Can the rotation squeeze out 75 wins before handing the ball over to the pen? There is a ton of questions and plenty of concerns. I feel Brewers and Reds will battle for the division and one of the wild card spots. Pirates may hit .500 baseball, but anything more than that, is a “big stretch of the imagination.”

Any who, I hope your right about the bucs this year. Maybe you see something I don’t and I am being too biased

Anything is possible in the second worst division in baseball. Heck even the Royals have (on paper) significantly improved and might compete for 2nd place in the AL central. The skill gap in the NL Central isn’t as wild as one might perceive. The advantages of battling for best of the worst is that all it takes is one breakout season from on of your guys or one injury from one of the best from the rivals to win it.

@PiratesFan1981 You have me all backwards. It’s not that I think the Pirates are anything special. It’s more the rest of the NL I don’t find impressive. SD SF I don’t see them much better than Pirates. COL worse. Even ARZ, they weren’t a regular season beast. But better than PIT. WAS nope. MIA nothing special. Don’t see anyone in the central that much better. Just because teams spent money doesn’t impress me. They didn’t get any players I said why couldn’t Pittsburgh beat that contract. I am just saying it’s a coin flip if Pirates add another pitcher. Will come down to health.

Zero concerns at RF 1b. Rowdy projects to hit. Joe as well and maybe more time and work he improves defense. Still good free agents available. Teiilo should be able to play well there if needed. Cruz as well. RF even less concern. Half the games are at pnc. That makes weak defenders like cutch joe the kc kid playable. Defensive only catchers are cheap and that’s all that is needed. Davis said drive line was just the most amazing beneficial thing a thing could be so maybe he can actually play catcher? Maybe he is delusional or they gave him a discount and he had to say that. Cruz said ankle is 100 percent I believe. If he said something like it was coming along I would be concerned. 100 percent is a powerful statement. But if Davis Cruz are full of it and lying and are awful then Pirates won’t make playoffs. I have to take them at their word and assume they are good. They likely wouldn’t say anything negative but no need to give such powerful comments.

@yourdream I still don’t see the Pirates being better than 90% of the NL. Dodgers, Braves, Reds, Brewers, Giants, and Padres being 6 of the 15 clubs that will be better than the Pirates. I see Phillies sneaking in on the last wild card spot. I believe 88 wins will win the NL Central (we both can agree it is the weakest division in the NL). With the current roster and some very big question marks around the diamond for the Pirates, I believe they will have 83 wins. Enough to progress from last year. It is do or die for the Pirates this season anyways. Reynolds can opt out after this season if the Pirates don’t progress. He is probably the only bonafide player who can hit career numbers this year. Should the Pirates finish similar or worse than last year, he will opt out and get a huge contract in the FA market. It’s definitely a do or die for the Pirates and Cherington. That is why I expected more this offseason than what has been shown. 2 additional starters (through trade and signings) would have made me more comfortable about the season. Losing Oviedo hurts a lot more than anyone realizes.

Again, I hope you are right about them this year. My confidence is shaken a bit after losing Oviedo. Vince Valesquez is going to be back in June and I’d love to see him resign with the Bucs. He won’t see a major league mound until maybe September or if lucky after the All-Star break the soonest.

Reynolds can’t opt out. Pirates don’t give players options. They are my favorite team to follow because they operate like I do. He gets a 6 team no trade list every season. Fair enough. Can easily be traded but doesn’t have to go to a miserable situation.

Dodgers Braves clearly better. No need for their fans to pay attention until October they are in. I think Arizona will finish 2nd. Philly gets in comfortably.

Don’t see Reds Giants Padres as much better than Pirates. Odds all similar. Cubs should be in that mix as well. Mets Marlins Cards are capable of getting into the mix.

Pirates shouldn’t have chance. But these other teams don’t listen to me. I tell them what to do for free.

This is a low risk, smart move. If Chapman gets off to a good start, the Pirates can flip him at the deadline for a legit prospect. If not, it’s a one year deal and they can simply move on next offseason.

Contenders typically overpay for BP help, especially those w/ closing experience, around the deadline.

The MLBTR prediction was two years and $24 million total. Didn’t happen. I wrote on another thread that the free agent deals might start coming in below expectations, depending on who was doing the expecting.

As for the Pirates, there’s no such thing as a bad one-year deal, as usual. If Chapman’s walk rate explodes completely sky-high, then they haven’t wasted too much money. If Chapman manages to get the ball in the zone now and then, the Pirates can flip him at the deadline for controllable young talent (see Royals, Kansas City).

And if, most unlikely, the Pirates somehow stay in wild-card contention for the year and Chapman does okay, it’s a reasonable one-year investment.

Good player to sign. Bad price to sign him at..

I probably would have offered half that and then move on if he didn’t bite.

Pirates need pitching getting him helps with that. assuming Bednar is healthy he and chapman could be a top tier backend.

THESE ARE THE MOVES REBUILDING TEAM NEED TO MAKE. Chapman likly got the biggest deal he could from the bucs BUT in doing that he guarantees himself a shot at the olay offs aslong as he plays decent. Reason being is the bucs sign him just to trade him at the deadline IMO and who doesnt want a good to elite lefty coming out of the pen throwing gas for the playoff push. At the very least the bucs get top 15-20 Organization prospect and if he is at his best they get a top 5-10 organization prospect. These are the moves all rebuilding clubs should make

Yet some of those teams’ fans don’t want them trying to improve or set themselves up for deadline deals. I know, I have railed about this for multiple offseasons now, and was proven right last season.

It’s a overpay because it’s a one year deal, surprised more teams didn’t offer that. Cheaper than Stephenson and has good swing and miss stuff, also will be traded if they aren’t in playoff contention plus he’s a lefty.

You think Bob is broke and can’t afford another 8 million? Or Cherington knew he only had 10 million left and splurged on a reliever instead of the starter he needs? It will be fine. If they need another starter they will get one.

I’m not far behind you in the positive outlook stakes, DreamGM, but would be shocked if BC has money left for a Lorezen/Clevinger type after signing Chapman.

Maybe this sets up a trade for Cease or one the Marlins?

Not even that positive. I think most years this team fails to reach 500. Just think the NL is so weak that they could win 84 85 86 and get a playoff spot or even win division.

I think they can afford them. Wouldn’t mind going cheaper and getting Ryu or Wood.

Cease seems too high of a price. Marlins maybe. I don’t have a feel on what they are thinking with new front office. Seems they should contend and would want mlb talent. Suwinski would be a target for them. But maybe they want to dump payroll and stack the farm and the Pirates have a lot of pitching prospects any team would want.

There are still plenty of serviceable and cheap arms out there, Lorenzen and Clevinger are really just brand name versions of similar pitchers still on the market. Kluber and Syndergaard are more of the same if you feel compelled to bet on a guy who hasn’t been good in quite a while somehow figuring it out..

There are still serviceable arms who aren’t flashy who could be had for less than $10 million a season: Eric Lauer, Alex Wood, Zach Davies and Ryu. None of them would blow the doors off anyone – but honestly the Pirates could probably get a couple of those guys if they really wanted them.

This does take them out of contention for the “top” arms remaining on the market (most of whom are Boras clients). None were ever realistic for the Pirates anyhow.

Chapman was projected as high as 2-22; based on his average career WAR around $9 million AAV would have been fair – but it’s still a pretty low risk signing. Gives them depth to get Jose Hernandez a few months in AAA if needed, could provide a positive return in a trade, or the team is doing well and pretty much never loses a game when leading going into the 7th (Mlodzinski, Chapman, Holderman, Bednar).

This is a surprising signing especially for this much money.
Nutting may be feeling the heat for being cheap.
Unlike all of the comments above they may be planning to use this guy as a second closer. Two years ago they had to use DeJong and Crowe for it when Bednar went down.Last year it was Holderman and he is definitely not a closer.
Shelton tried to pitch Bednar three days in a row last year and he blew two saves against the Braves. You cannot overwork pitchers who throwthis fast.
The problem with that rationale of having two closers though is it assumes that the Pirates will have a good team.
Even if they get another decent starter the team is still not fundamentally sound and their starting pitchers are still below average. They still have the same dysfunctional batting coach and their development team is still bad.
I want this team to win as much as anyone but until they fix the basics they will always have a marginal playoff team.

Chapman. More likely to be on the field. Still got some star power. Easy work for the broadcast crews. An intern can compile a seasons worth of ‘did you know’ in an hour.
Paxton has maybe 100 innings and 18 starts. Dodgers apparently believe they can catch some passable work early in the season. I think Dodgers see him as totally disposable as pitchers heal or ready to come up.
