Latest On Jorge Soler

By Steve Adams | February 12, 2024 at 10:59am CDT

Free agent slugger Jorge Soler has seen his potential landing spots dwindle a bit, with previously reported suitors like the Blue Jays (Justin Turner), Mariners (Mitch Garver) and Diamondbacks (Joc Pederson) all going in different directions to sign their primary designated hitters this winter. MLB Network’s Jon Morosi touched on Soler’s market this morning (video link), reporting that the 31-year-old is still seeking a three-year contract in free agency. The length of the pact has been a hold-up, as Soler has had teams willing to go to two years but has yet to be offered a guaranteed third season.

The Giants were reported to be in talks with Soler last week, and Morosi suggests they’re among the teams comfortable at two years but balking at the third season. Other teams that have been tied to Soler this offseason include the Red Sox, Nationals and, to a much lesser extent, the incumbent Marlins. Soler himself said last month that Miami hasn’t shown real interest in a reunion, however. The D-backs, notably, are still looking for a right-handed bat to pair with the lefty-swinging Pederson, but it’s hard to imagine Soler signing anywhere without a clear path to full-time at bats. A timeshare with Pederson at DH plus some occasional corner outfield work would be a surprise.

That’s due in no small part to the fact that Soler is coming off one of the best seasons of his career. He belted 36 home runs for the Fish in 2023, slashing a robust .250/.341/.512 (126 wRC+). Long known as a strikeout-prone player, Soler’s 24.3% strikeout rate last year was the second-lowest of his career and only 1.6 percentage points higher than the league average. His 11.4% walk rate, meanwhile, was the second-highest of his career. He paired that improved K/BB profile with his typical brand of loud contact. Soler averaged 91.3 mph off the bat, hit 48% of his batted balls at 95mph or greater, and barreled 15% of his batted balls — all ranking in the 81st percentile of MLB hitters or better, per Statcast.

Spring training’s looming start date could put some added pressure on Soler and other free agents to consider a drop in asking price, although that cuts both ways. Teams seeking offensive upgrades have watched alternative options come off the board and have fewer avenues to pursue. The onset of camp also generally brings about quite a few injury scenarios of note, any of which could radically alter the market for Soler and other free agents. An injury for someone on one of Soler’s rumored suitors (Giants, Red Sox, etc.) or even on a contending club that hasn’t yet shown interest could prove to be a catalyst for his market, just as we saw with the Astros and Josh Hader (who signed in Houston following a season-ending injury to Kendall Graveman).

Soler opted out of the final season of a three-year, $36MM contract with the Marlins at the beginning of the offseason, turning down a $13MM player option. That he’s had teams willing to offer two years suggests he indeed had more earning power than that $13MM on the open market, but many free agents have seen muted interest as teams throughout the league deal with uncertainty regarding their television contracts. A multi-year deal still seems likely for Soler. Speculatively speaking, however, if no three-year pact presents itself and the two-year interest he’s received has been at average annual rates that aren’t to his liking, Soler could follow Teoscar Hernandez and max out on the largest one-year commitment he can find, then take another shot at free agency next winter.

Whatever team adds Jorge and Trevor is guaranteed a strong playoff run at the minimum if not a complete world series championship.

Soler would be a nice addition for CLE but they definitely value defense and presumably Manzardo will factor in this year. Naylor figures to take a lot of DH abs. I’d be surprised if CLE spends the cash and wants to play Soler in the field most days.

But that lineup would look better.

What they’ve said most of the offseason is that they don’t want to block young guys from at bats (and I’m not fully convinced they plan on seriously contending this year anyway), but whether that’s what they’re saying because it’s their plan or because they have no other option is the question.

In the outfield (like with shortstop), they have no shortage of potential options but they have way too many players to sort through and they’re all young enough that they need regular at bats to figure things out so it’s a tough evaluation. Until then, we’re not even entirely sure if any of these guys can actually be major league hitters.

They really should have moved earlier to trade some of these guys as prospects instead of building logjams that they can’t sort through, so that’s how you see them selling low on guys like Nolan Jones and Will Benson.

Listen, I have no bias towards or against Cleveland as I am an Astros fan. They seem to have a problem with their hitting coaches though. If your not a guranteed all-star caliber hitter like J-Ram, Lindor, or now Naylor it seems most hitters struggle there while having had previous success elsewhere, or finding success after leaving.

Everytime the spend a little to try to find a power bat it doesn’t quite work out as they aren’t shopping at the highest tier of FA available for one, & 2 there hitting philosophies SEEM to nor work great for alot of players.

        J. Bell last year was horrible for CLE then pretty good in MIA. Zunino was coming off an injury & was injury plagued but he was a shell of the hitter he was in TB. They traded N. Jones & W. Benson who struggled to hit in CLE, albeit in limited playing time, but blossomed elsewhere as dangerous Hitters. They traded Y. Diaz to the Astros & he had 15 total HR’s in 198 GP in CLE’s minor league system then after the HOU coaches get him he proceeds to hit 12 HRs in his 1st 37 GP in HOU’s system. Going on to bash 37 total HR’s in 142 GP on the Astros farm, & 23 more in 104 GP during his rookie year.

So my point is CLE seems to not be able to develop most young Hitters that well, nor get the best out streaky but still good veteran Hitters. So they should probably either trade Clase for a top level already established hitter, or actually open the wallet & spend for a top of the market talent for a power bat. I personally don’t think Soler is QUITE top of the market level but will cost almost top of market level for a 2 or 3 year deal. What I just said about Soler applies to Bellinger as well imo but even more so.

My solution that would perfectly fit the Guardians & there small budget while stretching it to its maximum no doubt but still be affordable & budget friendly compared to big market teams spending, but CLE still wont do is sign JD. Martinez & B. Belt. Each player will accept a 1 year deal, JD MAY look for a 2 year deal since he is only 36, but Belt is probably getting 1 year for 13 mill & JD either 1 or 2 years for 15mill per year or around there. So for 28 million added to your payroll this year you could almost guarantee a AL Central title adding those 2 bats.

DH- Belt- JD when facing a LHP
        C- B.Naylor
        1B- J.Naylor
        2B- Gimenez
        3B- Ramirez
SS- Rocchio or whoever wins job
LF- JD- Kwan when JD at DH spot
CF- Kwan- Straw when Kwan in LF
        RF- Laureano

Belt and JD aren’t going to sign to be part time players essentially. Especially for that offensively handicapped club. 1B already has Naylor and possibly Manzardo. So, pick one but can’t have both.

Trevor’s mid lol. Only had one or two good years out of the ten he’s played but even then he’s only good when he’s allowed to use spider tack. I do believe he was did dirty by the league and the media with the whole abuse allegation thing that ended up being proven false, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves by thinking he’s the one guy that’ll put a middle tier team into the world series, because he’s not.

To be clear, having a guy hit 30 bombs is an entirely arbitrary thing to care about when you win 3 WS in 5 years yes. But when you are placing 4th or 5th in the division and have not won a playoff series in 10 years it gives you something to go to the games to see.

“Talks” with Soler could very well be Zaidi just trying to get Boras / Bellinger deal to a more realistic starting point, you can hope.

San Francisco is simply the stepping stone to get him the contract he wants with another team. Hello people! We’ve seen this show before.

Could be a very good sign, DH and injury history hurts.

I think the Red Sox should sign him and deal him at the deadline for future prospects

Soler would be a perfect insurance policy for the Red Sox and LF. The Tyler will sneeze and land on the IL at least 4 times. Not to mention his occasional muscle tightness that’ll keep him out of the lineup every few days.

Giants need him but it might be a tough sell. 3/45?

Unfortunately, the Sox won’t spend more, so it’s doubtful that we are really in the hunt for him.

The Giants notoriously haven’t had a player deliver a 30-homer season since Barry Bonds in 2004

Absolutely! Giants are way over due for this player !

Can we have a Tigers’ article, please? I feel the strong urge to express my displeasure, anger and frustration regarding the cromulent activity from the Tiger ownership.

Harris is losing my confidence. He doesn’t even realize how sharp a pitchfork can be, how can he be expected to run a baseball team correctly?

The Tigers need to hire guys who actually like baseball, played baseball, think baseball.
The Tigers need an owner who actually likes baseball more than other things….like hockey and cheating baseball fans.
Give the fans what they pay for.

Sure, this is best Tiger team a decade. That says more about Chris Illich than anything else.

You can’t tell me, the guys that are NOT “going for it”, are actually fans of baseball.
        They’re not.
