Padres Place Joe Musgrove On 15-Day Injured List

By Mark Polishuk | May 5, 2024 at 11:05pm CDT

The Padres announced that right-hander Joe Musgrove has been placed on the 15-day injured list due to right elbow inflammation.  Righty Randy Vasquez has been called up from Triple-A to take Musgrove’s spot on the active roster and in San Diego’s rotation.

More specifically, Musgrove is suffering from triceps tendinitis, as the Padres told reporters (including The Athletic’s Dennis Lin).  Since the IL placement was described as precautionary, it’s possible Musgrove could miss just the minimum 15 days if the triceps issue isn’t overly serious.  However, returning to the IL continues a rough stretch of injury-related misery for Musgrove that has now stretched across two seasons.

A broken toe suffered in a Spring Training weight-room accident delayed Musgrove’s 2023 debut until late April, and he was limited to 17 starts after a bout of shoulder inflammation returned him to the IL in late July, and ultimately ended his season.  The former All-Star still delivered a 3.05 ERA in 97 1/3 innings between these IL stints, but Musgrove has gotten off to a slow start in 2024.

No pitcher in baseball has allowed more home runs (10) or earned runs (29) than Musgrove this season, as he has lurched to a 6.37 ERA over eight starts and 41 innings.  This trouble with the long ball has naturally coincided with a huge drop in Musgrove’s barrels and barrel rate, and his strikeout and hard-hit ball rates are also below average.

It could be that Musgrove’s elbow problem contributed to these struggles, or potentially some lingering affects from his long shutdown period in 2023.  Assuming that his injury doesn’t sideline him for too long, this IL visit could be viewed as something of a chance for Musgrove to reboot his season after his time off.

Getting a healthy and effective Musgrove atop the rotation is critical to the Padres’ hopes, as Musgrove being an unexpected weak link has contributed to an overall inconsistent performance for the rotation.  Dylan Cease has been tremendous and Yu Darvish has started to stabilize after a tough start of his own, while Michael King and Matt Waldron have both been up-and-down.

Vazquez has also made a pair of starts, delivering a 5.87 ERA in 7 2/3 innings.  The 25-year-old right-hander was acquired as part of the Juan Soto trade package from the Yankees this past winter, and it remains to be seen if starting pitching will be his long-term role.  Though he has gotten the start in 92 of his 102 professional games, Vazquez hasn’t shown much at Triple-A (5.19 ERA in 95 1/3 career innings) or his 45 1/3 frames in the majors.  He’ll get another look in Musgrove’s absence, though the Padres could approach Vazquez’s starts as bullpen games if he can’t deliver a good chunk of consistent innings at the front of games.

Bummer. They need to stretch out Brito or Morejon, Vasquez is looking incredibly rough so far.

Agreed, if you think of two years of Dylan Cease as part of one year of Soto return. King has been good and bad. Right now, San Diego Padres and Oakland A’s have the same record. Both would be five games behind the Yankees but five games ahead of the Houston Astros.

King has looked really good half of his starts and also real the other half. But he is the Padres no 4 SP, with the upside of a really good no 3. Britto & Vasquez haven’t looked good, but they are much better than the depth SP options the Padres had in 2022 & 2023.

They were starters because the team had depth in the rotation. Right now the team lacks depth in the #5,#6 slots

Let me put it this way
#4-6 SP 2023: Wacha, Lugo, Martinez
#4-6 SP 2024: King, Waldron, no one unless you add Vasquez from MiLB

          And 2024 is deeper?

first of all, it’s early May so both of us shouldn’t be making any conclusions about this year. I just don’t see how this year’s rotation is superior or has more depth than last year, given that the #5 (and #6) slots are now filled by guys with no track record of success in MLB. Saying it doesn’t make it true, but if that’s a projection you want to make, then by what metric or argument are you basing it on?

so you are comparing depth pieces who opened the season as either a reliever or in the minors in brito and vazquez to actual opening day rotation starters in wacha lugo and martinez?

or are you saying wacha lugo and martinez were depth pieces and were supposed to be in the minors/relievers?

just trying to understand your comparison and what you actually consider depth.

That’s common with ligament injuries. They are essentially rubber bands and the tension is far more painful early in the injury. Over time as the injury lessens the function and tension, far less painful and when it blows out the pain goes away instantly.

Tow – they have more SP depth than in many recent years.

Who would you have had him get for “depth” when that term typically means a guy you hope you don’t ever need and stash at AAA?

Vasquez, Brito, Avila (since traded), Snelling maybe in a month, Mazur maybe in a month, Bergert any time.

      Probably missed someone.

With Snell, Musgrove, Darvish, Wacha, Lugo and Martinez, Waldron they had more rotational depth last year than this year.

Good point but I have to say that from a start of the season perspective, no one knew what to expect from Wacha and Lugo.

From that perspective, on par with say, Avila, Vasquez and Brito.

Now, a month into season they were excelling.

Not really. Wacha Lugo Musgrove missed time

They lost Snell but Wacha and Lugo missed 12-15 starts between them

Least they added Brito Vasquez King Cease and have Snelling and others closer to mlb readiness that they didn’t have last year

So I’d say padres have more depth this year than last year considering all factors involved.

Honestly, they didn’t really “lose” Snell. Snell is on the IL, and his start to the season has been horrendous. Seems like they were better off letting him walk, small sample size notwithstanding.

Comparing him to Cease, it’s obvious which one is better right now…. And more durable.

@Breww’88—Are you forgetting the 10 starts by Ryan Weathers? Or 6 starts by Avalia? Or 5 starts by Rich over the Hill in 2023? The Padres have way way more SP depth in 2024. Brito & Vasquez spot starts are going to be much better than Weathers, Avalia, and over the Hill.

Padres team ERA 2024: #21 in MLB

The reason for the big drop isn’t the bullpen, it’s the SPs.

Brew, I think of depth as the guys in the 5-10 spots. In 2023, those were far worse than what we have on paper now – IMO.

The SP ERA difference is just as much a product of how worse 1-4 are in 2024 than what Lugo and Wacha did out of the gate as 3, 4 guys with Joe on shelf.

Overall, 1-5 in 24 have not performed as well as 23 – for sure.

If I had to pick between current 6-10 guys (some young but high ups does) in the 24 group I’d be happier than what we were looking at on 23 when those young guys weren’t in the mix yet. Now, add Brito and Vasquez as well.

Might just depend on a persons view of what “depth” means.

I was of the assumption that SP depth meant Starting Pitching, the guys on the roster that make up SPs 1-6. Some rotations are top heavy lacking depth at the back end. I honestly don’t know the order of depth at SP from 6-10 on any team, including the Pads.

Guys like Snelling and Iriarte weren’t in my consideration for this comparison of last year and this year.

Last year at this time, Snell, Joe, Yu, Wacha, Lugo, Martinez
This year: Joe, Yu, Cease, King, Waldron, and I guess Vasquez, even though he’s been in the minors most of the year

Brito, so far anyway, isn’t a SP.

They’d have to rush Mazur or Snelling which I hope they don’t do. No other prospect, including Bergert, looks remotely close to being ready.. They’ll utilize Vasquez, Brito, Morejon while Joe is out. Waldron might not have many more starts if he doesn’t get it going.

Assuming a healthy Musgrove and Darvish, they have a solid core of 4 starters that are #2-#3 level SPs (I’m perhaps rating King too highly here, but ok). Their # 5 starter Waldron isn’t cutting it as a #5. Maybe they give Brito a shot, or Morejon (who actually does look improved – knock on wood).

@towinagain – Darvish is 37. He is healthy now and expected to make 25 starts &140- 150 IP while taking a couple old man IL stints to just be healthy for the playoffs. I am more concerned with Musgrove who had a shoulder injury in 2023. Darvish will make his starts & be avail for the playoffs.

          Who did Trevor Bauer punch?

Genuinely curious since Lindsey Hill lied and we have video evidence of her sleeping next to Bauer the morning after she said he beat her. She has no injuries in the video and shes smiling.

And the girl in ARZ Darcy Adanna Esemonu was charged with one count of fraudulent schemes and artifices. She was indicted for allegedly defrauding Bauer.

So who did he actually hit?

Bauer did not have to go to bed with these women. They were screaming red flags. Bauer has no discernment or he figured they would be easy victims. It’s all on him for putting himself in these situations.

About what the Lindsey Hill situation?

There’s tons of resources out there that covered evidence Bauers legal team discovered after the restraining order process that wasn’t made available to them (his defense team).

This does a pretty good job covering the video of her video she published on instagram and deleted or something

Anyways. Her text messages are public knowledge. Whether it’s Trevor Bauer sharing them or a website. Her texts are out there where she identifies Bauer as her next victim and admits it was consensual between them.

At this point you’re just choosing to be ignorant cause you got exposed as being uninformed. Typical behavior of someone who’s embarrassed they were wrong,

It takes a certain brand of sicko to think it’s ok to punch women and an even sicker person to defend a pro athlete doing it. There’s an mlb campaign about asking for help right now that you should really think about.

You haven’t provided any proof he actually hit a woman lmao. He didn’t hit Lindsey Hill and he didn’t hit the girl in ARZ.

Far as the other 3 accusations being accused doesn’t mean he did anything. I can accuse you of being inappropriate with little kids, animals, and dead bodies. Does that mean you indeed touch kids animals and dead bodies inappropriately just cause I accuse you of such?

When he’s formally convicted of a crime, not charged, and a jury or judge finds him guilty then we can say oh yeah Bauer did those things. Until then there’s no proof he hits women. And proof up to this point has been faked by both Hill and the girl in ARZ.

Move along a now little boy.

Ah yes. When confronted with facts the little boy gets defensive and hurls insults as he cannot provide proof Bauer actually hits women. Cause accusations aren’t proof and accusers have already faked “proof”.

Must be true that El Niño is inappropriate with kids animals and dead bodies based on his own standard.

Consensual rough sex doesn’t mean he hits women during intimacy. You can be rough and not physically assault anyone. Sounds like you’re very inexperienced in that area. Possibly a virgin.

One thing I would recommend doing is reading ALL the text messages that were released in chronological order…NOT just the ones cherry-picked by Bauer in order to skew things in his favor. You can’t take Bauer’s video as proof of anything because he’s obviously going to manipulate the evidence to conform to his version of events.

          Speaking of chronological order

Lindsey Hill said Bauer hit / beat her

          Go through court stuff

No charges filed against Bauer cause her story didn’t add up

Lindsey Hill was denied a restraining order

Bauer and Hill sue each other

Bauers legal team released information obtained by police such as video of her the morning after as she is laying in bed with no bruises smiling “fearing for her life cause he beat her” and texts proving she lied and it was an extortion scheme from the get go.

Lindsey Hill went from demanding a monetary settlement to asking for both parties to drop their respective lawsuits.

          Bauer paid Hill 0 dollars.

So which part proves Bauer hit her exactly? Was it the video showing she wasn’t hit? Was it texts saying they had rough sex? Must’ve missed where there was proof Bauer hit / beat this woman.

So is Hill. Like leaking private DM’s she supposedly received (which she probably sent herself from a burner) regarding what Bauer supposedly did to another girl who has not publicly accused Bauer of anything.

Yes, definitely Hill’s version needs to be looked at skeptically as well. They both have the incentive to frame events to their advantage. My ultimate take is that both are damaged souls and she was definitely going thru some personal psychological issues. These sort of people just find each other, especially for that brand of sexual recreation.

But I would argue Bauer should have recognized the glaring red flags here, remind himself that he’s a 31 year old grownup making 30million to start for the Dodgers. Send the girl home in an Uber and go to bed early. Do the responsible thing.

But instead he sees a vulnerable target & it’s like waving a red flag in front of a bull. They proceed to have consensual rough sex, which escalates in the heat of the moment into something not so consensual in her mind. The pictures the next morning aren’t any smoking gun for me because a victim will act complacent/docile around their abuser so they don’t get hit again. Also bruising/swelling can take 12-24 hours to fully manifest.

Unfortunately. Texts from Lindsey Hill confirm she planned the whole thing. She was looking for a pay day. Confirmed by texts, her own texts.

Given the fact we have her own words saying she’s a gold digger and will do what she must to extort Bauer anything she says must be scrutinized beyond belief.

She lied about many things the entire time but we are suppose to believe she feared for her life? Sure.

Act complacent and docile. She’s on video in bed Bauer is fast asleep and Hill smiles at the camera. Had every opportunity to leave the next morning. And didn’t. The video is direct proof she lied about her mindset the next morning. Someone in fear of their life isn’t laying in bed smiling at a camera (again that’s a choice she made by filming herself laying next to him, he’s asleep with a face mask on over his eyes).
We have the metadata confirming when it was taken (date and time).

The girl caught lying the entire time isn’t the victim.

Not likely to have been an option. Especially not both of them. Neither is expensive nor a FA at the end of the season, so no real need for the A’s to trade them.

Neither is a LHP. Both have history and peripherals this season that point to significant regression. so no real need for the Padres to trade for them.

Padres will be as good as their starting pitching. Offense is perfectly fine, defense is good though watch Arraez today I can see why he is t a good fielder. Looks like the dudes is in quicksand trying to get to a ball. Hopefully they keep him at dh most days.

Padres definitely need another starter and soon or else they will likely just hover around the .500 mark.

They have to take a chance on calling up Mazur and hope he is ready. Guess we will know more in the next two weeks. One if Musgrove is back and two of Vasquez can figure it out. I have near zero confidence in Waldron being anymore than he has been. Which is a good outing or being shelled. His stats say he should be shelled just about every time out.

Hard to see a trade for a starter this time of the year.

Seems real silly for Arraez to play 2B of all positions when Cronenworth is right there.

Arraez is actually decent on defense at 2B. He is no Semien or Gimenez, but he is above average. +9 DRS total and an average of 3 DRS, over the last 3 seasons and improving each year. He doesn’t have great range, but when he gets to the ball he makes the play and his glove and arm are good.

Cronenworth may be the best defensive 1B in MLB this season. No reason to move him to 2B when you have multiple other options.

Joe Joe has not been the same since the no-no. They can deny it all they like, but it’s obvious. It hurt him.

Too many times it’s Elbow Suicide, going for the momentary glory. Stop it! This ain’t 1963, and Warren Spahn isn’t pitching anymore.

Not worth it. Today’s demanded arsenal is too hard on the arm to extend top arms foolishly for one game..

Wonder what Spencer Turnbull decides to do next time he has a shot at #2, which may be in play now that he’s found it again.

Man, remember when all the analytic guys said Musgrave was an ace? His k rate… walk rate… spinny rate… He was destined for greatness. He’s a nice number 4 pitcher… always has been.

@Melchez17 His ERA has been 3.02 2020-2023, if that’s a #4 SP on your team, the 1-3 guys are HOFers

1 all star game. An inning eater who will keep you in games. That was his peak. Now he’s in decline at 31.

So you are basing your evaluation on a fan voting contest? Can you say any clearer that you really have no clue what you are talking about?
