Padres Place Yu Darvish On Restricted List

By Nick Deeds | July 6, 2024 at 11:00pm CDT

The Padres have placed right-hander Yu Darvish on the restricted list, as manager Mike Shildt told reporters (including Annie Heilbrunn of the San Diego Union Tribune) this evening. Shildt noted that Darvish is stepping away from the team while he deals with “a personal matter involving his family.” The issue does not have to do with anything physical, and Shildt did not comment on the veteran’s timeline for return to the club.

Players on the restricted list do not count against their club’s 40-man roster and collect neither their salary nor MLB service time, meaning that Darvish will forfeit a pro-rated amount of his $16MM salary for the 2024 season for the length of his absence from the team. The right-hander last appeared in a game for the Padres on May 29 and was placed on the injured list due to a left groin strain shortly thereafter. Reporting in late June indicated that the veteran was nearing a return from the injured list but had been slowed by a bout of inflammation in his right elbow. According to MLB.com’s Injury Tracker, Darvish had subsequently resumed playing catch as he worked his way back toward the big league mound but will now seemingly step away from the team for an indefinite period.

Darvish, 38 in August, is a five-time All Star and veteran of 12 MLB seasons. The righty joined the Padres during the 2020-21 offseason after the club acquired him from the Cubs alongside catcher Victor Caratini in exchange for right-hander Zach Davies and a package of four prospects. At the time, Darvish was coming off a dominant 2020 campaign that earned him a second-place finish in NL Cy Young award voting that year. While the righty’s work in San Diego hasn’t quite measured up to the incredible 2.01 ERA (224 ERA+) and 2.23 FIP he posted in 76 innings during the 60-game season, he’s nonetheless been a reliable presence at the front of the Padres rotation.

In 95 starts for the club, Darvish has posted a solid 3.80 ERA with an even stronger 3.69 FIP and an impressive 26.2% strikeout rate. That work impressed Padres brass enough that they opted to extend Darvish with a five-year, $90MM contract that began this season and will run through the 2028 campaign. The surprising commitment was looking good through 11 starts this year, as Darvish had dominated to the tune of a 3.20 ERA (126 ERA+) and a 3.51 FIP in 56 1/3 innings before he was placed on the IL at the start of June.

The news is a blow to the Padres’ rotation depth, as the club has relied in recent weeks on the likes of Randy Vasquez, Matt Waldron, and Adam Mazur to round out the club’s rotation behind Dylan Cease and Michael King amid injuries to Darvish and fellow veteran righty Joe Musgrove. With Musgrove expected to remain out until at least August due to a bone spur in his elbow that’s caused inflammation and now Darvish out indefinitely, the news serves to highlight San Diego’s rotation needs ahead of the trade deadline later this month.

The club’s 49-43 record puts them comfortably in the second of three NL Wild Card spots, and their offense ranks fourth in the majors with a wRC+ of 114.  Unfortunately, they’ve been held back by a relatively lackluster rotation that ranks just 19th in the majors with a 4.09 ERA this year. Given the uncertainty surrounding when Musgrove and Darvish will be back in the rotation for the club, it makes plenty of sense for them to explore a rotation market that figures to feature players such as Garrett Crochet, Jack Flaherty, and Cal Quantrill.

Yu hasn’t pitched for them in over a month, and they’ve been playing well.

There are legitimate concerns about sustainability with how the arms are throwing (starter and relief), but they have weathered the storm so far.

with just 17 games in the remaining 24 days of July, the Pads are likely to weather the injuries to Musgrove, Tatis, Bogaerts and Darvish, and if they get those guys back in force, plus add SP/RP help at trade deadline, they might be in a good position for playoff run/playoffs.

Going into the season I sure didn’t see them being this competitive. That they’ve done so well without most of their best players is pretty cool.

Theo and Hoyer made that trade in desperation. All they got was 4 lottery tickets, not one has made it to the majors. Super obvious salary dump at the orders of Ricketts.

I just find it absurd so much ink is spilled over Yu’s results during the 2020 “season” which was two months of chaos ball played in abnormal conditions against teams with opted-out players & a non-functioning minor league system. The Baseball Gurus need to eradicate all stats, records, flags from that 2020 exercise in futility.

Why should he wait forever? He did nothing wrong except get hooked up with some crazy women who like to be beat on before sex.Courts cleared him so why persecute somebody for something conscentual? Makes no sense at all. Innocent until proven guilty and he’s not been proven guilty.

Bauer was never cleared by any court for anything. However, MLB and the indepdendent arbitration panel gave him a record suspension for violating the sexual abuse policy. You can call that “guilty” if you want.

The mlb suspending him for violating the sexual abuse policy doesn’t actually mean he sexually abused anyone. You do realize all that policy says is if we think, not prove or know without a doubt, think or assume you did something that makes us as an organization look bad we reserve the right to suspend you. They don’t even have to provide proof to justify the suspension other than “it looks to sounds bad”

Turns out Bauer was actually the victim twice in elaborate extortion schemes set up by Lindsey hill and I forget the other woman’s name in Arizona. Hill dropped her lawsuit after the DA refused to go forward with the case due to her inconsistencies. And the lady in Arizona is facing multiple counts of felony extortion. Bauer hasn’t paid anyone off either in any settlements.

It is amazing how people cherry pick what they want to justify their questionable agenda while ignoring a long history through three organizations who had enough of this guy’s act for good reason.

But in the social media era, there are a lot of keyboard warriors who have lost their damn minds.

The fact they picked an article about a guy having to step away from his job for his family to air such views sets a new low even for this site.

Being suspended is not proof of guilt for anything. It literally says that in the CBA. Bobby Manfred can suspend a player for looking at him the wrong way.

Your position on this situation is utterly upside-down.

Quantrill is a former Padre and Preller rarely trades for a former Padre. He knows them too well.

Flaherty is on the IL. MAYBE after he returns and proves he is healthy.

If Flaherty just tweaked something he’d be a good fit. He is pitching like a #2 with the Tigers and will cost more than Quantrill but orss than Crochet. Jim Bowden said the Tigers should get back a top 5 and two top 30’s from an average farm system, so likely less from a good farm system. The Tigers need bats, a young SS (preferably close to MLB ready) and a young catcher. I’m not sure they match up the best with SD but others think it could work (Devries was mentioned). I like Lesko a lot from SD but that doesn’t address any if their needs. They have some other interesting prospects in the lower minors.

There could be a lot of teams in on Flaherty as long as he is healthy so the price will be high, even though he is a rental. Preller doesn’t care about price and will just go get what he needs and always seems to be able to replenish his prospect supply. That’s what I like about him.

Simm – I hope! I’m not sure there is a SP thst I want them to trade a top 4. Crochet is that guy but really, how much is helping in 2024 with him already being over his innings from last year and never having a high inning year in his career.

Ok, he can be that 8th inning guy they need and spot start in playoffs?

Like to have him in 2025 for sure.

Yeah he is the guy if they are going to trade any top prospects for. His 2.5 years of control make it worth it. Even if he goes to the pen or they go to a 6 man rotation to limit his innings along with kings. It really feels like they could use two starters and two pen arms. At the very leaves they need one of each.

I would like for them to trade for Yates perhaps they go for Quantrill as a cheaper option. Fedde perhaps is another possible option.

I like Yates as an add. Fedde might be overvalued now, but would also serve the purpose..

The light July schedule (17 games in the next 24 days), combined with the highly evolving injury/leave status of Musgrove and Darvish, combined with the ongoing improvements with Vasquez, I think Preller will wait until very late July to make any moves because the needs might be very different in a few weeks than they are now.

I view any trade for Crochet as a trade for 2025-2026, given he’s pitched beyond the innings boundaries of the Shire and is entering the dangerous hinterlands of Middle Earth. If the team thinks the issues Snelling is having deems him expendable, then who am I to argue that Crochet for 2 years of control isn’t a better option? Though only Salas is a top prospect, the Pads have a ton of other increasingly hot C prospects and those can carry a lot of value in trades. Maybe Flaherty can be had for some lower tier prospects

Brew, I’m considering a loss of Snelling for 2 years (I’m not convinced there is much of 24 remaining on that arm) of Crochet is a positive trade. Those lower end C’s should def have some value.

Brito and Vásquez to the pen with a return of Musgrove (hopefully Yu) so I think they can get away with only adding a SP if Yu and Joe are healthy and in rotation 3-4 weeks from now.

Assuming Joe and Yu return a back end guy might solve the problems for 2024.

Padres really need pen help. They have at best 3 reliable pen arms. The rest are a disaster.

Crochet if they acquire him could also be placed in the pen. Though my guess is they wouldn’t trade the cost if that was the plan. I could see the padres going to a 6 man rotation to limit the innings on crochet, king and injured guys like Darvish and Musgrove (if they ever return).

Padres offense is in a good spot. They will get back Xander soon and Tatis in around a month. Could argue they could use a better backup outfielder.

For the most part it’s pitching pitching and pitching for the padres.

The announcement of Yu Darvish’s placement on the restricted list strikes a somber chord not only for Padres fans but for the entire baseball community. Darvish, a seasoned veteran with a storied career spanning over a decade, has been a cornerstone of stability and excellence in San Diego’s rotation since his acquisition in 2020.

His decision to step away from the team due to personal matters involving his family transcends the game itself, highlighting the human side of professional athletes who often face immense pressures both on and off the field. While the specifics of Darvish’s situation remain private, the impact on the Padres is palpable.

Well, MLB didn’t used to play so many games so maybe we should stop counting stats from 1961, when they expanded the number of games played. The HR record that Ruth held for so long was quite impressive because he didn’t play as many games. I still think Ruth is the HR king. Just because we added more games so players should pad their stats doesn’t make it legitimate either.

I do not know how it got so far off the deep end about Trevor. First, I support DV victims. Second, in this case, the female was shown to have lied about some things, thus, what else did she lie about? Third, they did not prosecute, which may not be the same as not guilty, but if there is a case to be made, they’d have made it. Fourth, I don’t care whether anyone ever signs him or not. That is up to an owner, but the keyboard warriors who know nothing really should not be commenting on this as there are soooooo many incorrect statements. Bottom line: it is up to an owner to sign him and up to a fan base to accept him. I do not care now, because I do not believe this woman was a true victim and she makes it tough for true victims. Do I like Trevor? No. Do I think he should sit out for this? No.

I personally do not think he is worth the money, but if an owner wants to try it – go for it.

I agree with everything you said (although I do like Bauer).
Manfred gave Bauer the kiss of death with his ridiculous suspension which made everyone believe he was guilty and the court of public opinion is more powerful than any actual court in the world.
I also believe the suspension sets a ridiculously bad precedent for the league. Players see this, the vultures see this as well and will exploit players, demanding payouts and hush money. Bauer wouldn’t allow himself to be blackmailed and it cost him his career.

Road apples. He was subject to the exact same evidentiary hearing process as every other player who’s been investigated under baseball’s joint policy. Both the commissioner and the independent arbitrator made the same findings based on what they heard in this process and only differed on the length of the suspension. We don’t have any real idea what evidence was presented at these hearings, only the results. The difference is every other player who’s been suspended under the policy has taken responsibility for their behavior. This player, to this day, has not. And this why he is unemployed. Completely his choice.
