Diamondbacks send SP Jordan Montgomery to the Mariners for OF Mitch Hanniger & 1B prospect Tyler Locklear. Who says no?
letitbelowenstein
Seattle if they have half a brain.
Fever Pitch Guy
Let – Agreed! And why would Seattle pay that much in salary and talent for a one year pitcher rental when it’s hitters they really need.
Canuckleball
The only way I can think of this trade making sense for Seattle is if they were to trade one of their current young pitchers for a big bat they need. They can then use Montgomery to back fill the rotation and hope he has a bounce back season in a pitcher friendly park (which would be likely, but not certain)
That’s a lot of moving parts, but Jerry does love his trades, so it’s not entirely implausible.
sillywabbit
Bad contract swap, the extra starter allows M’s to trade Castillo for a bat.
sillywabbit
If Jerry were to trade a starter, it’s Castillo or no one. The 4 young ones aren’t available.
Canuckleball
Except Castillo doesn’t get a meaningful bat.
sillywabbit
Agreed, but his 20mil salary is then freed up.
Joe It All
Baseball is a funny game sometimes. Just two years ago the Reds were able to ask for King’s Ransom offers for Castillo and now the Mariners can’t recoup anywhere near what they had to offer to get him. I understand his salary then compared to now is a huge reason why but it’s just wild how quick the league can sour on a player.
sillywabbit
His contract isn’t upside down. He’s just expendable & the M’s could reallocate his salary since ownership won’t spend on free agents.

Thoughts on unloading Yoshida to Oakland?
Sean The Trucker
….. If I was the Mariners I would say yes. Why Hanniger though? Fresh start on an old team? I can understand Locklear, but the DBacks might need to throw in another top 75 prospect. I don’t think Monty would be in Seattle after this season.
sillywabbit
Bad contract swap. Hanniger doesn’t have a path to regular playing time as the roster sits.
Jean Matrac
“…fried and burned…”
Joe It All
That sounds like a rotation Tim Lincecum would put together if he were a pitching coach these days.

The responses lack a deeper dive into specifics, such as potential targets, financial implications, or how these moves align with the teams’ long-term goals.

Old York, if I may be so bold, part of the concept of an online Q & A Chat is that it’s an interactive conversation happening in real time with upwards of a 1000 people firing off questions. Mark tries to answer as many questions as he can, in the limited time allotted. Obviously this is not the venue or format to address deep dives, or going into excessive detail and other rabbit holes that you yearn for because of your hunger for baseball knowledge. I know it’s all rather baffling, but I think you get the gist.

Ah, thank you for the lecture on the concept of a Q&A Chat—how would we all survive without your groundbreaking revelation? While I understand the constraints of real-time interactions and time limitations, that doesn’t absolve the responsibility of providing substance. My comment wasn’t a demand for a doctoral thesis on baseball strategy but rather an observation on the surface-level nature of the responses, which left significant questions unanswered.
The format may not allow for exhaustive analysis, but it certainly allows for insightful direction. For instance, instead of brushing over key topics, a well-placed, succinct comment could identify potential trade targets, hint at how payroll flexibility is being managed, or highlight a team’s overarching strategy. A little quality over quantity would benefit the chat greatly.
Your thinly veiled sarcasm about my “hunger for baseball knowledge” only underscores the point: genuine fans seeking meaningful insight are being shortchanged. If this is the best standard for Q&A sessions, perhaps it’s not the audience that’s baffled, but the host who’s failing to rise to the occasion.

You crack me up Yorky!
