Alex Bregman, Tigers Reportedly At “Standstill”

By Darragh McDonald | January 21, 2025 at 3:45pm CDT

Spring training is now just a few weeks away but many free agents are still unsigned, with Alex Bregman arguably being the most notable. The Tigers are one club that have been connected to him but Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports that talks are “at a standstill.”

At the start of the offseason, MLBTR ranked Bregman the #3 free agent of the winter, behind Juan Soto and Corbin Burnes. Soto and Burnes are both now signed, leaving Bregman as the top guy still out there. We predicted a seven-year, $182MM deal that ended up being sort of a midpoint for Bregman’s negotiations earlier in the offseason. The Astros reportedly offered Bregman $156MM over six years, though the third baseman was trying to get to $200MM.

Rather than meet in the middle, Houston walked away. They lined up a deal with the Cardinals for Nolan Arenado, though Arenado used his no-trade clause to quash that. Instead, they acquired Isaac Paredes from the Cubs and signed Christian Walker to take over at first base. Since then, Bregman has been connected to clubs like the Tigers, Blue Jays, Red Sox and others, but without much apparent momentum.

The Cubs reportedly sniffed around the possibility of a short-term deal for Bregman but agent Scott Boras said last week that Bregman wasn’t considering that path. Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer also recently downplayed the possibility of the Cubs getting involved. “I think likely,” Hoyer said at Cubs Convention a few days ago, when asked if the Cubs’ third baseman is already in the organization. “Certainly, we’ll look to supplement. Infield is an area we’re focused on (for the bench), but I think the likelihood is yes.”

Matt Shaw is perhaps the best solution there but he has not yet made his major league debut. There’s no guarantee he will hit the ground running in 2025, so there’s an argument for adding someone established, but it seems the Cubs are trying to be more opportunistic than aggressive in Bregman’s market.

It makes for something of a staring contest with the 2025 season approaching. It was around this time last year that Boras started pivoting to short-term deals for Cody Bellinger, Matt Chapman, Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery. Boras has apparently made that turn with client Pete Alonso, as Alonso’s camp reportedly pitched a three-year deal to the Mets recently.

But with Bregman still holding out hope for a longer deal, it seems to be leading to the general sluggishness of the third base market. The Tigers have had a fairly quiet offseason, with one-year deals for Alex Cobb and Gleyber Torres being their primary moves so far. They have Jace Jung and Matt Vierling as potential in-house options at the hot corner, so they have a bit of leverage to wait out Bregman.

With Vierling also capable of playing the outfield, Jung seems like the logical choice for third base right now. He struck out in 30.9% of his plate appearances last year but that was a small-sample debut of 94 plate appearances. He didn’t have those kind of strikeout rates in the minors and still managed to draw a lot of walks while making his major league debut. Like with Shaw, there’s no guarantee that he can take the job and run with it but the Tigers might feel they have enough cover to not go crazy on a Bregman deal.

As long as Bregman stays out there, it seems to be preventing other dominoes from falling. The Cardinals came into the winter looking to do something of a reset but they haven’t been able to execute it yet, which seems to be at least partially because Arenado wanted clarity on Bregman’s situation before he’d commit to being traded. That has left St. Louis in a sort of holding pattern where they might just keep Arenado and other veterans into the start of the 2025 season.

Daniel Kramer of MLB.com also reports that the Bregman situation is leaving the Mariners playing a waiting game. While the M’s are not in on Bregman, they are impacted by the situation nonetheless. Kramer writes that the M’s “believe they’re positioned to make a notable move before Spring Training” but are holding on to see if a Bregman deal sparks movement elsewhere, since upgrading at third is on their to-do list.

Seattle has been fairly quiet this winter, with their signing of infielder Donovan Solano to a one-year, $3.5MM deal being their most notable move. Kramer reports that the M’s don’t plan to deploy him at second and he will be in the mix for playing time at first base more than anywhere else. That perhaps suggests Solano will be platooning with Luke Raley, since Solano is better against lefties and Raley the opposite.

For third base, Kramer floats various possible scenarios that could come to pass as the offseason progresses. He mentions that the Red Sox could land Bregman, which could perhaps make someone like Triston Casas more available. Casas doesn’t play third but it could perhaps lead to Solano moving across the diamond for more time over there. Kramer also floats the possibility of the Tigers signing Bregman and making Jung available, or a similar situation with someone on the Blue Jays like Orelvis Martínez or Addison Barger. It’s also possible that infielders like Luis Arráez of the Padres or Willi Castro of the Twins become more available once Bregman is off the board.

Until then, the Mariners are left laying in the cut, though they have explored other options. They had talks with the Cubs about Nico Hoerner and Bellinger, though the Hoerner deal seemed to become less likely when Paredes was sent to Houston in the Kyle Tucker deal. Perhaps the Hoerner trade talks could be revisited if Bregman ends up a Cub, which is perhaps another reason for the M’s to wait. The Bellinger connection was reported earlier in the offseason.

Another path the M’s considered, according to Kramer, was getting Nathaniel Lowe from the Rangers. However, it seems Texas didn’t feel great about dealing Lowe within their division, which led to him being dealt to the Nationals instead.

For now, it all feels like the part of the standoff where everyone has their hand by their holster, waiting for movement. It’s possible that bodies start dropping once someone flinches, but it’s a staredown for the time being.

Bregman needs to get his act together ASAP. I thought he was a team player but by refusing to throw the Roger Beshens football slider he has shown quite the opposite. It’s a disgrace to himself and Orioles fans everywhere

Coming into this off-season I knew the dodgers would get sasaki and at least one more notable player but I did not expect them to BECOME the off-season

Bregman’s market is about to dry up. Should Tigers walk away it may be a long time before Bregman finds a new home – possibly not until weeks into Spring Training

Turning down 6 years $156M extension from Houston quite possibly could be his best offer. If that happens Bregman (Boras) brought everything upon himself

Both Bregman & Alonso have to be regretting turning down their respective club’s offers to extend them. Bregman’s offer came this year while I believe Pete’s big extension offer came in 2023. I don’t see either player coming close to the deals they were offered by their own organizations. I wonder if they made these decisions themselves or if Boras advised them to turn them down. Either way, they left 10’s of millions on the table. I’m not sure Bregman will get more than 4 years, $110M at this point and Alonso is looking at 1-3 year offers in the low $20Ms per year.

There’s no question that Scott Boras is one of the most influential and effective MLB agents of all time, but he’s also had some pretty bad misfires along the way. I wonder if Bregman & Alonso will be his next examples of overplaying the market or will he be able to pull off another huge deal in the 11th hour by waiting long into the signing period. Inquiring minds want to know.

One team that hasn’t been mentioned much for either player is the Angels. Alonso seems to fit the Arte Moreno mold to a T. They could also be in on Bregman as they can’t count on Rendon to even get on the field, let alone produce.

Alonso had a different agent when he rejected the 2023 extension offer.

The only way the Cubs should consider going 4/100 for Bregman would be if they already have a deal with the Mariners to give up prospects for Hoerner to exceed the quality for the two QO lost picks. Then it’s essentially Bregman + cash for Hoerner, and Shaw moves back to his more natural position of 2B.

@Brick – Thanks for the clarity on Alonso’s agent. He should be kicking himself then ;-).

Did the Cubs exceed the CBT last season? I thought they stayed below it, in which case it would only cost them 1 pick to sign Bregman, correct? I do agree with a deal for Hoerner would be required if the Cubs did indeed splurge on Bregman, but I don’t think they’ll pull the trigger. Detroit is still the favorite to sign him, but I could see a desperate Toronto team or the Angels jumping into the fray as well, especially if Bregman is willing to sign for 4 years. Boston could still get involved, but they really like their young kids coming in this year and don’t want to piss off Devers either.

The Cubs exceeded the CBT by under $1M. Not sure exactly what happened, my speculation is that they had another relief pitcher salary dump lined up at the deadline and it fell through.

@unpaid – Both teams (Houston & the Mets) offered their players market deals, but both players turned them down. I don’t think the Mets or Houston have any egg on their face for losing Alonso or Bregman to free agency. Their offers were more than fair but both players decided to test the market and it sure looks like both players will end up making less than their home teams had offered them to stay.

Coming into the offseason the overwhelming number of FA’s under the Boras roof raised red flags. Every offseason is different but the typical process starts with the top FAs and works its way down. When you are the 6th or 7th ranked guy on the agents lineup of players to offer, teams can just play you off one another. Would they have been signed sooner if under a different Agent, no clue. It seems like having all these FA eggs in one agent basket is a risky approach for the players. Would you want your representatives going into teams you want to play for have other similar players to offer? It’s a conflict of interest and no matter what the agent wins.

Boras has a team of other sports agent under his flag. Public info shows that he has about 50 employees in total. I don’t think players who sign up with him have to worry about Boras spreading himself too thin as he’s not negotiating every minute detail with ballclubs. He made right under $40M from commissions just off the Juan Soto deal alone.

Boras’s flaw, if you can call it that, is marketing above average players as superstars. A consistent .260 hitter with 20HRs whose ceiling is about an .800 OPS isnt a superstar and shouldn’t command that kind of money. Same for a one-dimensional slugger who’s on the wrong side of 30

I understand that but if one company is representing players who are in “competition” over a contract from the same team where does that company’s loyalties lie? Yes the obvious answer is the commission. However if you are Bregman and Alonso sitting around waiting for a contract after all these other players signed I would be concerned around conflicts of interest. Mets are in a position where they could sign one or the other.

I don’t have any answers for you as I don’t know what Boras does behind closed doors with his clients and teams. Your perceived conflict of interest is just that. I don’t think players who sign up with him share your same concerns. Like him or not, his track record of winning contracts for his clients is undeniable. Most times he wins, sometimes he loses.

John – You are 100% right that the agents work for the players; however, an agent is much more than a lawyer to these guys. There are players who negotiate their own contracts and then hire a lawyer to draw up the contract for them. The player pays them much less than they do an agent.

A player hires an agent to promote and market them to other teams, negotiate on their behalf and most importantly, to advise them on the market conditions and what their true value is as a free agent. The player always has the final say and the agent will do whatever the player wants, but some agents can advise their clients poorly, leading to missed opportunities and substantial earning losses as well. Even an agent as good a Boras has made such mistakes in the past and cost his clients $10’s of millions by offering bad advice on their market value, waiting too long for a deal that never comes. It’s definitely a two way street.

An agent is going to tell the player what he thinks he can get for said player. If the agent misreads the market, then he’s worthy of the player’s wrath.

Ah, the classic attempt to sound superior while completely missing the point. If deferred contracts are so commonplace and regulated, why the need for this performative rant? The reality is, understanding the nuances of MLB finances doesn’t make you the gatekeeper of the conversation—it just means you might have read the rules. Maybe focus less on labeling others as ‘financially illiterate’ and more on contributing something useful to the discussion, unless, of course, you’re just here for the ego boost.

That reminds of ’07 when Bengie Molina threatened to sit out the season if he didn’t get a multi-year deal and then someone reminded him that he was a free agent and no one cared. Eventually he signed a one year deal with the Blue Jays…

I think we start seeing this trend more and more as we have in recent offseasons. Teams know who is in on these guys. If the big big boys (LA, NYY,NYM) aren’t interested in breaking the bank, clubs know they can wait for the price to completely evaporate because their market becomes very predictable. Every team has their price and those are becoming more clear to other teams. Teams will either let someone else overpay or wait for their price to win out… Feels like the implication… I mean, where (else are) you gonna go?

Carolina – He will likely follow in Correa’s footsteps … discounted 2-year contract with an opt-out after this season. Then he becomes a free agent again but learns his lesson by starting the next offseason with a much more reasonable longterm ask.

        Wait – Great post!!

So here’s reason #942 why any media outlet owned by the Red Sox cannot be trusted.

        nesn.com/2025/01/red-sox-rumors-significant-update…

The “significant update” is nothing more than this bozo “digital content producer” saying Bregman “might be Boston bound” ONLY because Heyman wrote:

“Bregman is an interesting one,” Heyman said on “Hot Stove. “I do believe it’s gonna work out great for him because right now I’m hearing there are five teams in it. I’m not sure exactly who the five teams are, but most likely, probably is the Red Sox. I understand he likely would have to play second base and he’d be willing to do it. … I think he fits them. They have not made a big signing at this point. … To me, I think they’re the most likely at this moment to sign Alex Bregman.”

So Heyman starts off with him *hearing* that 5 teams are in the running, but he admits he doesn’t know who any of the 5 are. And yet he *thinks* the Red Sox will sign him.

I swear, reading Red Sox offseason news is more effective for inducing vomiting than sticking your two fingers down your throat. Absolutely unethical deceptive clickbait crap everywhere you look.

The league has changed the sport. In 22, they changed playoffs to allow 12 teams in. It isn’t as hard to make the playoffs anymore. You can just limp in on 85 wins. Most are just trying to make small changes to limp in. More teams in the playoffs equals more participation trophies. Teams less motivated to build a strong team because more make the playoffs with less effort.

I’m still waiting for the Rays to offer Alonso 3/78 but with no opt-out or NTC. It would be Rays-like to decide that trading him on July 29 with 2+ years of team control remaining would yield prospects worth the lost pick due to the QO and $18M in a partial year’s salary.

Muncy’s a fine player, 2.5-3.0 bWAR the past three seasons, peak of 5.3 in 2019, and the Dodgers keep getting him back for 10m-15m a season.

To take a facetious comment seriously for the moment, the Dodgers wouldn’t be signing Bregman, they’d be signing—and paying for—the upgrade in projections between Bregman and Muncy, which amounts to roughly 1 win. A 25m AAV to improve by 1 win is patently ridiculous.

Typical fans yell ‘we got Bregman!’ when what they should be saying is something like “we just signed a 1 win upgrade for 6/160m” or whatever the overpay turns out to be.

Co-owners Stanton and Larson are just among the several billionaires who own the Mariners. The team had the highest profit margin of any team in MLB, according to Forbes. They can afford both Bregman AND Alonso if they want them, but they really don’t care about setting up expectations for the fan base about winning a World Series like, say, the Dodgers. Profit and loss expectations first. Sad, really.

MLB owners do not get wealthy running baseball teams. Most clubs produce positive cash flow, but run very close to breakeven (or even run at a loss) from a GAAP accounting perspective. MLB owners get rich by selling baseball teams.

Some players/agents are just too clever by half. Ballclubs have the same info the players/agents do. They know how to slot these guys. Bregman won’t see 6 years @ anything now. Should’ve stayed where he was – on a perennial contender. Correa did the same. He left $500K/yr on the table (and a playoff contender) to go to mediocre MIN. How’d that work out? The grass isn’t always greener. Personally I’d rather take a little less and know I’ll play in October, rather than break the bank and be sitting on the couch. But hey, that’s just me.

3 years/$105M w/ opt outs and then hope to over perform, opt out, turn 1 year/$35M into 5 years/$165M or 6 years/$200M and call it a day, bro.

I agree on JV but having said that Cobb is projected to have a better season from one article I read. Who knows maybe they saw something in JVs medicals they didn’t like.

Torres was a good add on a short term deal that doesnt block prospects and Cobb is a decent depth add for the same reason but they needed a #2. I think Harris is slow playing it on Flaherty and Bregman to bring the length of their contract demands down so it doesn’t handcuff the team. If he signs Flaherty for 3 years instead of 5 and Bregman for 3-5 instead of 7 that would seem to be a perfect offseason. Even one of them with what he has already grabbed is a decent offseason.

They didnt need a bunch of older overpriced players, just a couple tweaks. They made the playoffs with a bunch of young guys last year and there is bound to be internal improvements. Why not let them play?

Campbell is our future second baseman. He should be good by year 3 at the latest and should be getting an extended amount of playing time in 2026 if he does well with full season of AAA this year.. We also traded Sale for Vaughn Grissom. So Grissom should be getting a 1 year try out at second to prove why he is the guy over Campbell. There’s not going to be any multi year signing to the infield because we also have Mayer who will be playing anywhere from 2nd, 3rd, or SS depending on how things shake out. It doesn’t make sense to sign an infielder when we have Devers, Casas, Story, and Campbell and Mayer shortly on the way.

OF is Abreu/Refsnyder platoon, Rafaela, and Duran. Rafaela has to prove this year that he’s an everyday player/starter with his bat. Otherwise, he’ll probably be reduced to a super utility bench bat/injury fill in. He is a super important injury fill in to Story of he gets another injury which has been his unfortunate trend the past three years.

Casas has to prove he can stay healthy. Otherwise, I think the Red Sox may try to sign the coveted Vlad who would be a perfect right handed bat for middle of the order for this lineup. I think red sox would prefer vlad over bregman and I do too. Just gotta pry him from Cohen’s hands. This is why I’m hoping Alonso signs with the Mets but they could still move Alonso to DH and put Vlad at 1st

Granted the decline is there, but 5.4 to 4.5 to 4.1 WAR is still a high baseline. That’s better than merely pretty good.

Bregman can continue to decline by the usual aging curve of 0.5-0.6 WAR / season and still give you 4-5 years of starter performance. Plus his ability to play 2B, and SS in an emergency suggests he can fit as your backup IFer the year or two he’s headed out the door.

That .315 OBP in 2024 is what’s giving teams fits.

That surprises me somewhat. Bregman was a 4.1 fWAR player in 2024. Alonso produced half that.

6/156m was the Astros offer in an era where solid 2-3 win players, even old guys like Christian Walker, are getting 3/60m. Bregman’s 2 years younger and is in the much more rarified 4-5 win neighborhood.

      3/60m at Bregman’s 34-36 years, and 3/96 for his age 31-33 years.

A team should be able to haggle him down to 7/156 or 8/156m. He’ll get the same money unless he has illusions that he’ll still be a productive player at 37. Maybe they can arrange a 1/15m team option followed by a 1/10m team option?

Still believe the Tigers will sign him to a 3-yr contract in the $90-$100 million range, with opt outs after years 1& 2. I realize this is an overpay at an AAV of $30 – $33.3M/yr but it’s necessary to convince Bregman to go short term. This also allows Bregman FA options the next 2 years when he has his “monster” season(s). Also provides the Tigers the flexibility of not blocking their highly rated prospects like McGonigle, Lee, Jung or Rainer as 3rd base options for the next 5+ years. If a s/t deal can’t be reached, they’ll be fine in the long run and not have to worry about another (potential) Javy Baez albatross contract strangling them, who btw still has 3 yrs and $73M left on his contract.

@Motown is My Town Bregman’s exactly the kind of player you give opt outs to.

A well above average player whose performance is uncertain and whose contract demands aren’t working out for him.

Even if he has a bad year by his standards and gives you 2.5 fWAR he’s close to worth 30m in 2025 and might well find a guarantee of more than 60m for 2026 onwards. He might also stick around for 2026 and give you another 4 WAR season before departing.

Is it possible that Bregman could re-sign with the Astros? Sure they signed Walker and traded for Paredes but if Bregman re-signed, the Astros could put him at 3B, Walker still at 1B, and Paredes as the DH but he could still swap in for Bregman and Walker when those players need rest/DH days. Astros have Alvarez who can play LF with Tucker gone though not sure how great Alvarez’s defense is.

Altuve said he’s willing to move to the outfield to make room for everyone in the infield. What a great selfless brotherly gesture to Bregman. They don’t have anyone great in their outfield in terms of hitting since they traded Kyle Tucker away. Alvarez plays some outfield but better off at DH. Having Paredes, Bregman, Altuve, Alvarez, Walker, and Pena makes a scary good lineup. Their rotation is Blanco 2.80 ERA, Valdez 2.91 ERA, Brown 3.49 ERA,Wesneski 3.86 ERA and Arrighrti 4.53 ERA. Javier, Garcia, and J.P. France sidelined along with mccullers to start season. I would gladly crawl back to the Astros if I were Bregdaddy.

Big fat game of chicken. Problem for Bora$$ and his clients is that teams are becoming less and less willing to pay for those declining years that normally start at 33-34 without getting several years in the 28-32 range. Bregman turns 31 this season. The Bora$$ 4 from last year, were all 30 or older. Alonso just turned 30. So the question is who blinks first? Honestly, don’t think it will be the Tigers. He would help for sure and the near term they don’t have a 3B prospect. Just 2B prospects that they are trying to see if they can play 3B. But they seem more than willing to go with Jung and Vierling if Bregman is not going to budge. They also don’t seem to be interested in Arenado and who knows if Arenado would waive his NTC to come to Detroit. Honestly would not surprise me if this drags on into the season.

@tigerdoc616 Except that player decline typically begins at 28. Alonso isn’t close to “33-34” but the Mets aren’t even making an offer that includes those years, and the rumored 3/68m already bakes in the expected decline for age 30-32.

Put another way, if decline typically occurred only at 33-34, MLB would be full of players in their mid-30s, when in fact most teams have 0 or 1 productive regulars in their mid 30s, and it’s rare to have 2 such players.

There were 13 hitters age 33-34 with 400+ PA last year, including 8 with a +2 or better WAR.

There were only 8 hitters with 400+ PA older than that, including just 1 with a +2 WAR.

As you say, most hitters are done by 32.

@Darragh You might consider changing the headline of this post to indicate there is Mariners news involved in it. I would have totally missed the stuff about the M’s if I hadn’t read the entire post or may have skipped it altogether thinking it was only about Bregman.

Its a Soras guy so that explains that. Astros offered big money because they could afford to as they had those prior years of his at a lower cost. Detroit don;t want to walk into another Baez.

Detroit don;t need another expensive mistake. Turning down the Astros was his choice. Detroit can make a deal favorable to them. Soros never lets one players deal effect another like for say Detroit’s Skubal.

At this point, I’m sour on Bregman. Let’s go after Alonzo. Or, just let the kids continue the ride and see where we go. I’m interested in what Jung could do with a full season.

I’m glad the Tigers seem to be prudent in their pursuit of Bregman. He’s going to be replacement level by 2028 and there’s no reason not to believe this past season and his offseason surgery aren’t the beginning of his decline.

I recall that I said the same thing about Tucker Barnhart and that came to fruition. He never regained that form he had in St. Louis.

Don’t get me wrong. I’d love to have Bregman. Just not on a long term deal that’s gonna resemble what it was like at the end for players like V-Mart and Cabrera.

I think Detroit should concoct an offer like this: Sign 3 years ,NO OPT OUTS
31M,31M,31M ….. Contracts work both ways.

player Option for 31 in year 4., (go, if you are so underpaid)

*Team option for 26M in year 5, *not a misprint
    player option for 26M in year 6 . (that’s $176M) all totaled.

    So,$124 M guaranteed.
Borass only really interested in contracts that are heavily slanted and can be skewed into ‘record breaking’ of some nature.

The Mariners simply need to meet the Orioles asking price for Ramon Urias. And it’s non trivial. Simply their CB pick. That pick has zero value to DiPoto because he’ll be gone long before a 2025 pick has any value to the Mariners.

As an Astro fan I don’t view this as the same thing they did with Springer and Correa – those were basically token offers. The offer made to Bregman was sincere and very, very generous. He could’ve spent his entire career in Houston, the one place he isn’t considered a pariah.

Imagine Bregman unable to get an offer matching what he turned down from Houston, unless he agrees to go to Toronto. I bet he didn’t have that in his mind when he and Boras were planning their response to the Astros.

Jays more likely to use Ernie Clement for 3rd, and platoon other INFs there. If we land another 1B, Vlad can share 3B as well. Seems teams are happy to platoon the position rather than consider it a necessity.

If Bregman were amiable to a 3 year deal he might have more takers. At 30 years old with all kinds of signing bonuses, deferrals, and performance options for later years that might be more feasible. Last 3 years consistent over 20 HR per season would be the attraction for teams like the Jays in need of run production.

Bregman might not be interested in the Jays if they can’t nail down Vlad/Bo as those I imagine give FA’s pause to the direction of the team

It’s going to be the Dodgers, isn’t it….

If it were important to Alex that the team have winning players around him he would’ve stayed in Houston. His objective at this point is clearly not winning, it’s total dollar amount, years and average annual income.
If the Oakland/Sacramento/Las Vegas Athletics offered him 7yrs for $200 million, I’m sure he would take it.
