Tigers Sign Jack Flaherty

By Mark Polishuk | February 7, 2025 at 10:00am CDT

Feb. 7: The Tigers have formally announced Flaherty’s two-year deal.

Feb. 2: Jack Flaherty is returning to the Motor City, as ESPN’s Jeff Passan (multiple links) reports that the right-hander has signed a two-year deal with the Tigers worth $35MM in guaranteed money.  The frontloaded deal pays Flaherty $25MM in 2025, and he can opt out of the second year of the contract this fall to re-enter free agency.  Flaherty will earn at least $10MM in 2026, though he can unlock up to an additional $10MM in incentive bonuses if he makes 15 starts this season.  The deal will become official once Flaherty passes a physical, and the right-hander is represented by CAA Sports.

The new contract is a healthy increase over the one-year, $14MM deal Flaherty signed with Detroit in December 2023, as the righty was looking to rebuild his value after a few injury-marred and inconsistent seasons with the Cardinals and Orioles.  Flaherty got himself back on track in impressive fashion, delivering a 2.95 ERA over 18 starts and 106 2/3 innings for the Tigers before he was dealt to the Dodgers at the trade deadline.

Now pitching for his hometown team, Flaherty had a 3.58 ERA in 55 1/3 regular-season innings for L.A. and had a couple of big moments in the playoffs, most notably seven shutout innings against the Mets in Game 1 of the NLCS.  After capturing his first World Series ring, Flaherty headed into the open market in search of a lucrative long-term deal, bolstered by his 2024 production and unencumbered by a qualifying offer.

MLBTR rated Flaherty eighth on our list of the winter’s top 50 free agents, projecting that he’d land a five-year, $115MM contract as he entered his age-29 season.  Even as other pitchers exceeded salary expectations, Flaherty’s market remained relatively cold, and he said in an interview on the Foul Territory podcast just over a week ago that he had received little in the way of formal contract offers.  A couple of weeks ago, reports suggested that Flaherty was open to the type of shorter-term deal with an opt-out that he ended up signing for his second stint in a Tigers uniform.

The Mets, Cubs, Red Sox, Giants, Blue Jays, and Orioles were all linked to Flaherty at various points during the offseason, and reports of Detroit’s interest in a reunion first surfaced back in early December.  Flaherty noted during his Foul Territory interview that he “wanted to stay in Detroit” before the deadline trade, and “loved” his previous time with the team, particularly pitching alongside Tarik Skubal in the rotation.

It could be that Flaherty lingered this long on the open market because teams wanted to see more than just his 2024 season before being sold on a longer-term commitment.  Injury concerns may have been a factor, as the Yankees pulled out of a planned deal to acquire Flaherty at the deadline after looking at his medical records.  Apart from one skipped start due to a bad back, Flaherty was otherwise pretty healthy in 2024, avoiding the injured list and tossing 184 combined innings during the regular season and postseason.  His average fastball velocity was a modest 93.3mph, however, and he lost some velo later in the season after the trade.

Looking elsewhere on the Statcast page, Flaherty posted an excellent 29.9% strikeout rate and 5.9% walk rate, along with strong hard-contact and chase rates to go along with his 3.17 combined ERA with Detroit and Los Angeles.  It was the kind of form that Flaherty hadn’t shown over a full season since 2019, when he finished fourth in NL Cy Young Award voting while pitching with the Cardinals.

It is relatively uncommon to see a player get dealt by a team at the trade deadline and then re-sign with that same team the following offseason, yet the way this scenario played out, the Tigers’ decision to move Flaherty couldn’t have worked out much better.  Detroit received prospects Trey Sweeney and Thayron Liranzo from the Dodgers, and Sweeney already made an impact by becoming the Tigers’ regular shortstop down the stretch.  Unlike most deadline sellers, the Tigers caught fire late in the season and made an improbable playoff run, going 31-13 over their last 44 games to win a wild card berth, and Detroit then upset the Astros in the Wild Card Series before taking the Guardians to the full five games in the ALDS.

After relying on the “pitching chaos” strategy for much of that run, the Tigers’ rotation looks a lot more stable heading into 2025.  Flaherty and fellow new signing Alex Cobb join Skubal, Reese Olson as pitchers with set rotation spots, and the list of fifth starter candidates includes the likes of Kenta Maeda, Casey Mize, Jackson Jobe and Matt Manning.  Detroit might well keep this entire group to guard against injuries, but there’s enough depth here that the Tigers could consider trading a starter to address another primary need, like relief pitching or a right-handed bat.

Among Detroit’s primary free agent signings this winter, Cobb, Gleyber Torres, and Tommy Kahnle all signed one-year contracts and Flaherty’s deal might also end up as a one-year pact should he exercise his opt-out clause.  Even if Flaherty passes on his opt-out, all these signings fit president of baseball operations Scott Harris’ preferred model of shorter-term contracts.  This isn’t to say that the Tigers haven’t at least explored longer-term deals (i.e. their ongoing pursuit of Alex Bregman), but focusing on just short-term upgrades has allowed the club to keep its financial powder dry for a bigger splash in the future.  Flaherty, Colt Keith, and Javier Baez are the only Tigers players guaranteed money beyond the 2025 season.

While naturally Flaherty would’ve preferred to have locked down a pricey long-term deal already, another quality season will surely line up nicely for such a contract next winter, even if a full year with the Tigers would make him eligible for a qualifying offer.  In the interim, he’ll bank at least a $25MM payday, and pitch in a comfortable and familiar environment on what looks to be a contending team.

It’s a great deal for both sides. If Flaherty makes 15 starts but they are not great he can make 20 million the second year as another pillow before retesting free agency. If he does good he can retest free agency and if he doesn’t make 15 starts he can forgo free agency and the Tigers pay him only 10 million which might be better than what he’d get in free agency after being injured.

So your assuming he’s an alcoholic for over celebrating after winning a world series.I’m not into alcohol at all never understand why so many people are but i’m not gonna jump to conclusions.Hopefully he isn’t.Tigers Miguel Cabrera actually was caught drinking and driving not sure if you remember that,Sadly as years went by people were wrapped up in his accomplishments on the field that awful incident was forgotten about,He’s lucky he didn’t kill somebody. If Flaherty does have problems with drinking i pray he gets help.

The front office did a great job, they traded away a rental player and not have a top `100 prospect and Trey then STILL got him back.

          You need to relax.

They definetly can’t rely on some miracle comeback again. They need to get lot more production from their lineup.Their overall team batting stats were pathetic.Several times before they got hot at end it was amazing they didn’t get no hit several times. If not for their pitching staff carrying the team they wouldn’t of been close enough to make a comeback plus Twins totlly falling apart.

Believe none of what you hear and half of what you see. If he drinks he drinks. Alot of players have, Darryl Kyle gave Rick Ankiel alcohol to calm his nerves when Rick was something like 19 years old? Before his yips…

Is it to the level of problem CC Sabathia had? Or is it a David freese type issue where he was seen as to hung over in 2013 playoffs? But was also praised as a clubhouse leader in LA before his retirement by his teammates, even said they needed to bring him back.

It depends on the person weather or not it’s problematic. I don’t drink because alcohol is evil, and wouldn’t ever say yeah go and do that, it’ll be good for you. But at the end of the day it’s a personal choice as long as the government is making taxes off its sale and it remains legal, just as sports betting has become. Doesn’t mean the committee is suddenly gonna let Pete Rose in

Unless Flaherty bombs this year, this is basically a 1 year contract for $25M. A 2025 season with a 3.00 – 3.50 ERA and matching ERA+ and Sierra will get him a 4-5 year deal for $100M+. He’ll only be 30 years old next season and have a track record of staying healthy for consecutive seasons. That’s what scared teams away from him this offseason on a multi-year deal (health concerns), but if he performs in 2025, he’ll get his big contract.

Detroit fans have to be excited about this deal. This really solidifies their rotation.

I don’t know. A player signing there on a one-year deal seems crazy, Seattle would be too, but if this is the last real contract that player will sign he should be open to it. The Gleyber deal was shocking to me. Baez signing there was not.

“Angels sleeping at the wheel..great deal for Detroit”…Artie Moreno has proven that he cannot win baseball games no matter how many free agents he signs.

He’s overruled his own GMs time and again, to sign players to some of the biggest contracts in baseball history(at the time).

But, until the Angels begin to draft and develop better, there’s no amount of free agents that can turn Anaheim into a consistent winner on the baseball diamond.

I don’t disagree, they’re probably looking at another fight for 4th. But they said the same thing about the Royals. What kind of impact would Wacha and Lugo really have for a team that finished with over 100 losses in ‘23? They were projected for 75 wins last year, a marked improvement for sure, but not a playoff team.

Good pitching and development of the young guys can make a huge difference. Guys like Neto and O’Hoppe showed a ton of growth last year. I’d argue the Royals would kill for someone like Ward to help anchor that lineup.

I’m just being honest. The Angles won 63 games last season and finished in last place in the AL West. They are nowhere near competing for a world series or even the playoffs. Yet every time a team signs a free agent. The delusional Angels fans on here act like they are one piece away and are pissed because they didn’t sign the player. Even if it’s a 35 year old journeyman reliever.

It’s hilarious and sad at the same time.

You’re acting like Angels fans are World Series or bust. They just need to build a foundation and get closer to 500, and it’s a piece here and a piece there. Calm down

“As much sense..Mavericks trading Luka Doncic”..We’re already hearing various reports about serious discord between Doncic’s handlers(and inner circle)and Mavericks team management.

Another report states team management felt Doncic was not committed to high level conditioning and feared giving him a supermax deal of $345M.

There really had to be a lot of tension and turmoil going on behind the scenes for the Mavericks to have traded their team’s biggest star.

I never watch NBA but skimmed a article. Dude needs $ next year. I’d rather pay someone who isn’t fat lazy injury prone that $. Easy trade for Dallas. Davis is under contract for next year as well. Entire extra year for free. And draft pick. Sounds great. Fat kid scores more but Davis scores and plays defense and is taller. In playoffs he might be just as good or better. At least close enough. With extra year it’s a steal. LA just wants that international star power. That probably makes cents.

You can talk about conditioning all you want fact is Luka is a top 10 player in the nba with 5 all nba selections at the age of 25. Mavs made a really bad move by not marketing him to any team other than the Lakers. They could’ve got a ransom for Luka instead they get 32 injury prone unibrow and a late first round pick?

It’s a 1 year, $25M contract. He only takes next years option if he gets hurt and can’t pitch, or if he absolutely bombs this year, but it would most likely be a $20M option if that was the case.

Bregman is not signing with Detroit. I wouldn’t be surprised if Bregman has to pivot to a short(er) term deal himself. I don’t believe the original Houston 6 year offer is still on the table, nor do I believe he has another 6 year offer pending from another team for more money. This sounds like classic Boras-speak to me. Bregman is 31 years old, coming off his worst offensive season since his rookie year, but he somehow thinks he’s worth 7/$200M in this market?

The lack of acceptable offers to date is directly related to his last extension that bought out 2 free agency years. He got paid $100M over his last 5 seasons but it’s hurting him now since it extended him thru age 31 and he’s coming off a poor platform year. Had he bet on himself and gone through arbitration & became a free agent in 2023 at age 29, he would have received his $200-$250M contract. He’ll be lucky to get over $120M TCV if you ask me this time around.

Yeah I think it’s a good spot for him because he pitched really well for them last year. Still the 100m projections weren’t completely ludacris. Yusei Kikuchi just got 3 years 64 million, Jack Flaherty is 3-4 years younger so it wouldn’t have been a complete stretch. Think the Angels should have also jumped on Flaherty but they didn’t.

I’m a Tigers fan but let’s be real. If Cubs or anyone else for that matter took that DET deal and made it 2 yrs for $45m or 50m guaranteed Flaherty is taking it.

The reason he “lobbied” publicly for Tigers to sign him was he was “publicly” asked about Tigers in a podcast, and it was like a day after Skubal had done actual lobbying for Tigers to sign him on MLB Network. All he did was answer the question posed to him, and it was a generic answer any player would give.

He also said in that podcast he hadn’t received any formal offers in weeks.

With reporting for Pitchers in 10 days a LOT of guys have signed in past 72 hrs…no pitcher wants to have a delay before ST as they are all creatures of habit

This was just perfect mix of 60% of MLB teams being allergic to spending, a team having a pre existing relationship with player and said player changing his demands from multi yr deal to short term.

Unfortunately I don’t think it will work that way for Tigers with Bregman. I also don’t think Bregman is coming to DET, but not for lack of trying–I think it’s simply that Bregman doesn’t want to leave HOU (and is probably embarrassed he turned down their extension offer right now)

Flaherty also looks like a 120 inning SP.

His last 9 starts with LAD with the pitcher’s park that is Dodgers Stadium? A 4.50 FIP, and he then did his best to knock the Dodgers out of the postseason. One terrific start, one mediocre, and three abysmal starts.

@Tigers3232 I won’t disagree with you. It’s extremely easy for me to figure out a players value but after seeing only 1 team be interested in obviously good players Bart and Hill I have my doubts about mlb gms. Thought it was just Padres definitely bought Boegarts fake Fenway stats. Colorado Detroit Bryant Baez awful. Ok. But it’s more widespread than I thought. It’s easy to ignore what Jack did in Detroit and figure out what he would have done in your ballpark. Majority of fans think go here to boast your stats. Who’s to say players and agents don’t think this?

I think it’s a good contract for Detroit. Could have been a overpay though. He was brutally honest in saying how awful the market was for him. He spoke out about blm and pride. I have no problem with that personally but as a business owner I wouldn’t want that employee unless my customers mostly agreed. May have a medical concern. I believe what he said about his market. Respect his brutally honest remarks about it. Even if they bid against themselves and maybe his market heated up recently, it’s still a very fair contract if not alright good. I’d lean good.

That’s overly reductive and just not true, especially for pitchers. If they’re good enough to expect to make it to free agency and command multiple offers, they sign where they think they can make the most money and have the most success for their careers. Pitchers especially so. The existence and prevalence of no-trade clauses, especially limited, proves that not all teams are created equal based on offering the most money, just like restricted Japanese free agents do.

Think about it. This isn’t franchise mode on MLB The Show. Flaherty has a house in Detroit and he clicked with Detroit and Skubal last year. He also has a house in LA, he has his mom in LA who he’s very close with who is also his only family member as he was adopted and she was a single mother, and he grew up a huge Dodger fan and opposed to the Angels/Giants/Yanks.. It’s very common for a player to have 2 or 3 “No ways” on their list.. He wants to play for a contender. All that starts to shape his offseason and contract possibilities.

I’m not saying he’s Charlie Morton who makes himself available to all of 4 teams an offseason, or Giancarlo who limited himself to the Dodgers and only the Dodgers for months before finally adding the Yankees as an acceptable alternate team he would play for. Or even Jose Ramirez who left 9 figures on the table and knew what he was doing (unlike an Albies, that crap doesn’t count). But just this offseason we saw Corbin Burnes push a surprise to everyone because he liked the idea of going home to pitch. The Yankees offered him more, and the Diamondbacks had 5 locked in SP (Gallen, Merrill Kelly, Brandon Pfaadt, Eduardo Rodriguez, and Jordan Montgomery) that already left Ryne Nelson without a job, and it still happened…

And like I mentioned we also see it with the Japanese players who don’t qualify as unrestricted free agents yet and who receive essentially the same offer from all 30-teams, there are lots of moving parts that weigh in. Did they buy a house, do they have kids enrolled in school, is there wife willing to move or is she wanting to keep the family where they are, what endorsement deals are available to them, what is their role on the team, what is the support like for their role, etc..

The Dodgers had a 5-year string of signing pitchers to 1-year deals that were less than half of their other open offers, but pitchers wanted to go there to work with the pitching staff. The Dodgers were basically getting a #2 every year for #5 money bc they wanted to develop a year before they went and signed their long term contract. And it worked after people saw what they did with Rich Hill and Alex Wood, Andrew Heaney and Tyler Anderson are the most prominent examples, but there were a bunch of impact relievers too. E.g. Shelby Miller, Brandon Morrow, Daniel Hudson, all came for a year to hone their craft and got paid, but the only one the Dodgers ended up paying was Blake Treinen. It worked up until last year too. Shelby Miller worked out great, James Paxton ok but he retired after the season, but I think it’s fair to say that Joe Kelly coming back and getting worse, and whatever that was with Syndergaard has made free agent arms more hesitant of going to the Dodgers magic pitching school for a year.

Still, there’s no way that recent history made the Dodgers a less likely destination for Sasaki to sign (I’d say Shohei and the market make it likely LAD is where he will make the most money bc of endorsements, even accounting for state taxes were even bigger reasons, and being on the west coast was a nice kicker). But most signings aren’t to the team that offered the most pure dollars, especially when you account for taxes and deferrals. The Shohei and Soto sweepstakes notwithstanding, pretty much every signing for every free agent that doesn’t get stuck on the market with their hand out is an example of why and how that free agent wouldn’t sign with just any team based on dollars offered and chose to sign with the team he did. As long as the offers are +/- ~5%, maybe even ~10%, the rest of that stuff matters. They plant flags, and if plans don’t go as expected, many will Arenado right on out of town to a more desirable location.

I’ve heard downtown Detroit has really upped the ante especially around where the Lions play. Since the Lions have played better it’s brought folks and money to that part of town and the restaurants and shops are hopping. Isn’t there also a casino in downtown Detroit ??

There’s 3 casinos. Lions and Tigers play right next to each other. That portion of city was already rebuilt and has been vibrant for 20 years.

LCA where Wings and Pistons play was built in a somewhat desolate area between downtown and Midtown. That area is built up a ton and has expanded the safe walkable area quite a bit.

@Tigers3232 Thanks! Just curious because I enjoy casinos, but is there a specific reason 3 casinos are allowed in the city ?? I mean , it’s not Nevada or Atlantic City, and I thought if they are Native American operated they tend to be outside city limits on reservation land?

@Ignorant None of the 3 are Indian casinos. MGM owns one, Motor City is another(Illitch family), and 3rd is Greekton. The first 2 are owned by original owners since 1996. The 3rd has passed through numerous hands. Most recent big name owner was Dan Gilbert, he sold to I believe Penn Gaming. They are sone sort of corporate casino conglomerate.

All 3 are on fringe but in downtown. Indian casinos are scattered throughout MI. Nearest probably 200 miles from Detroit. They aren’t on tribal land either, not sure how the rules governing where they are allowed work.

There are 3 casinos because there are enough gamblers to keep 3 busy, and the city and state collect taxes off them. Amazing how many people have extra money for this. I know I can’t afford to give mine away.

@Goetta You clearly have not visited Detroit since late 8ps or 90s. Downtown is thriving and the area of Downtown that is safe and has thriving businesses has exploded. Now the rest of Detroit proper leaves alot to be desired. That is nothing like Downtown tho and is similar to most other large US cities.

Mott Haven, Bronx went through that same transition over a decade ago. I’ve checked out then some gorgeous three-story brownstones which had decrepit floors/ceilings. Bad enough you use could use a fire pole from attic to ground floor. Some went as low as $150K. Now they start at $1.7M after putting in about $700k in gutting renos.

Just saying compared to other major cities it’s a S hole. I’ve been there a bunch of times. Once for a final 4 like 10 years ago and they literally had banners draped over abandoned buildings so you couldn’t see it on TV. I know they improved it but just saying ‘he wanted to go back to Detroit’ is not a valid opinion. Dude was signing a contract in February. I’d sign with any city too. 1 year opt out tells you all you need to know. and he’s going to be like ‘peace D town.’ Plus I said the suburbs are nice and upstate is awesome. I love Michigan but don’t defend your armpit.

Goetta…Just shut up dude. You’re only digging a deeper hole. Speaking in generalities based on spending a day or two in the city 18 years ago doesn’t mean a damn thing. As plenty of others have stated, the Detroit of 20 years ago isn’t the Detroit now, just like the Detroit 20 years ago wasn’t the Detroit 40 years ago. Ask any of the 300,000 people that came to Detroit for NFL draft last year.

The other thing to add I haven’t seen mentioned is that the city has developed a TON of its riverfront over last 10 years. Combined with thousands of apartments and condos that have gone up, the entire Downtown, Riverfront, Theater/Comerica & Little Caesars districts simply didn’t even exist in 2008.

@Zerb I think MLB is trying to backload division games. It makes for much more compelling games in Sept. When Tigers were making late run everyone was eyeing the few series against KC and MIN. I see LAD having season locked up by then, but still could have ramifications for home field and wild card for opponents.

We don’t need another Javy Baez, or V-Mart, or Miggy etc etc the last years of his deal, all for a marginal upgrade of chance at winning a title (which probably isn’t for about 2 yrs anyway, when Bregmans decline will rapidly intensify)

        Bregman @ 4 years? Sure.

But I’m not doing 6 years when the chance of getting more than 3 years of ++ production is small

V-Mart and Miggy were dumb signings. VMart especially stings, he was coming off the best offensive season in his career, moved to DH full-time and didn’t have to worry about catching ever again or even grabbing a 1B glove, he was given a 4-year contract knowing he’d be bad by the end specifically to have his bat for 2015, and he rewarded them with… not just the worst offensive season of the contract, but of his entire career..

But context matters. Those signings didn’t hurt the team at the time because Illitch didn’t put a cap on payroll, having James McCann catch was on purpose bc Avila was still held back out of some fear that he was a nepotism spot or something, and neither Miggy or V-Mart prevented them from signing anyone else while he was still alive and trying to win a championship. They could have signed Max, they just didn’t, the Nationals ponied up with a bigger contract than anyone expected. And they didn’t have to trade Fister the year before either, that was just weird for a win-now team. But Miggy was still Miggy, but he was the 120 game a year version, Cespedes and David Price were huge adds, Verlander was rolling, but they just came up short. Way short, Verlander and Price were their only 2 SP worth mentioning, Greene was like the worst SP in the league, Simon and Sanchez not far behind, and any other arm they tried was even worse than them, like Lobstein, Boyd, Farmer and Randy Wolf. Gorzellany, Rondon, Feliz and Krol were the worst relief foursome in baseball. Castellanos was still a bad player with potential, etc.

They were a good team on paper. VMart playing badly, with no Scherzer and no Fister did them in and they went from 1st to last, and the Royals did their Jedi thing and won the title Illitch wanted so badly, but aside from going in 1 SP short, it wasn’t a bad process, just bad results. At least you can see why they made those signings in context of the time.

Javy though was an actual drag and did prevent them from pursuing another premier player as well as a SS that wasn’t terrible. Javy was an anchor from day 1, and he was the worst player in baseball last year. This wasn’t a foolish signing of crowd favorites from a rich old man doing whatever he could to win and coming up short. Javy was a disaster, the kind that people should lose their jobs over. There was never any way to make sense of the Javy signing, it’s like they spent just to spent, then weren’t able to spend again until… Well, we’re still waiting.

THAT bad, no. But he was also the worst qualified player in 2020, short season and all but still everyone pretty much knew he was going to age poorly, he was never a very good baseball player who had never seen a slider he could hit or wouldn’t swing at. He was just a freak athlete masquerading as a baseball player, at the end of his physical prime with that same freakish natural ability quickly fading.

He should have had more to offer than THIS, and he was still a terrible signing from the get-go.

Tigers: I think in many ways Boras has earned the animosity towards him. Yes, he’s a guy just making money within the rules of the system, but his entire schtick is pushing for every last dollar, in spite of all other considerations, for his players. But, his stupid, quirky rhymes and titles for every single player’s offseason is so overdone it’s ultimately ineffective in and of itself.

Honestly, I blame the owners for allowing it to go on this long, but the past few offseasons have shown the owners are unwilling to buy into Scott Boars’ tactics, with the exception of the very top player, like Soto.

It used to be that Boras would bring huge binders comprised of unique statistical measures from the top analytics guys that demonstrated how his players were worth far more than anyone else. However, now every organization has those same guys using the same stats to reflect they are not worth it.

But, I think it’s a fair argument to say Boras’ shrewd approach to salaries have not helped baseball as a whole. I’m not suggesting he is the only problem, and I’m not arguing he is the biggest problem, but I don’t believe he’s helped either.

Guess Bregman gets to suck it now. Flaherty is a bigger upgrade to the rotation than Bregman would be over Vierling/Jung. Glad they didn’t wait on him. Drops Cobb to 4/5 starter now. That’s not bad. Skubal, Flaherty, Olsen, Mize, Cobb, with several young pitchers as depth. No need to rush Jobe now. Let him build innings at Toledo to start the year.

Great terms, too. Great price if he continues to pitch as he can, and even if he flops and doesn’t opt out, it’s just one more year of at least a decent starter. Very happy with this move.

Good for Jack would have been multiple multiple years 100m+

Now he has to hope to stay healthy. Opts out. Only to get hit with a QO offer. Could be great for Tigers next year as well. Almost can’t lose. Sign him cheap again. Get a draft pick. Or he should be highly motivated to rebound from poor or injured 2025. TJ or something could ruin things.

Just my own personal opinion. I actually took a step back from being a diehard Tigers fan after Harris messed up at the trade deadline that year and when I saw the Flaherty trade last year I thought it was decent and felt like if he was somehow able to bring back Jack after trading him (which was a very unlikely & shrewd move) then that would make up for his past misstep.

Not an exact science but I appreciate the atypical move of bringing back a player you traded away for prospects.

If he ends up staying healthy this year, he will opt out but it will still be a great one-year “prove it again” deal. Solid #2 in an all-of-the-sudden great rotation.

    Skubal
    Flaherty
    Olsen
    Cobb
    Jobe

Whether it’s Cobb or anyone else, every team needs at least seven or eight who are capable of being starters. It’s just the nature of the game now, especially with the shorter Injured Lists compared to a decade ago and the 14 day DL.

The problem ppl like you have w Cobb signing is the money–you either think it’s too much or that it cost you a shot at someone else.

Well, it’s not your money and the team still signed Flaherty, Kahlne, and Torres. So what’s the complaint du jour now for fans?

I just am not a fan of Cobb in general. If they re going to spend $15M that’s fine. For that cost I think they could ve done much better than Cobb. However since it was Cobb that amount was spent on, we re going to see him starting games which is what I’m concerned with.

If it stays healthy. They hit Postseason with 1 solud SP last year. It made for unique playoffs with all the pitching changes and jockeying. Just didn’t seem a sustainable plan, odds of one pitcher being off grows exponentially with that many changes.

Rickey Henderson signed with the A’s after the ’93 season when he was traded by them to Toronto during the season

Rick Aguilera signed with the Twins after the ’95 season when he was traded by them to the Red Sox during the season

Mike Bordick went back to Baltimore after the ’00 season when he was traded to the Mets during the season

Happens more often than you think. That has to suck a little though right? For the team that traded for you during the season and you re-sign with your old team afterward. They get to keep the players/prospects the other team gave them and get you back…

Got an even older one.. (stats from baseball-reference, NOT memory!)

The Tigers traded OF Ben Oglivie for Milwaukee SP Jim Slaton in Dec. ’77. Slaton went 17-11, 4.12 era in 233 IP in 1978 for the Tigers. He then returned to the Brewers in 1979 as FA.

Meanwhile, Oglivie was a 21.6 WAR player for Milw in 9 seasons. His first 3 seasons in Milw (his age 29-31 years) were brutal for Tigers fans:

          1978: 867 OPS, 18 HR, 72 RBI, 4.1 WAR
          1979: .869 OPS, 29 HR, 81 RBI, 3.0 WAR
          1980: .925 OPS, 41 HR, 118 RBI, 6.5 WAR

I hated that trade as much as when they traded Willie Horton to the Texas Rangers for Steve Foucault in 1977, and Ron LeFlore to the Montreal Expos for Dan Schatzeder in 1980.

Willie had a 29-HR, 106-RBI season w/180 hits his age-36 (!) season for the Mariners in 1979. LeFlore stole 97 bases for the Expos in ’80 after having been a 15.6-WAR CF’er the previous 4 seasons for the Tigers.

Kirk Gibson has implied several times that trading LeFlore was addition by subtraction. Since LeFlore had been a pretty productive player, I took it to mean LeFlore (who had previously served hard time for armed robbery) maybe had some chemistry issues.

I’m curious why everybody says this “as cited below…” because as I read from top to bottom on my smart phone, the older entries are always “above” the newer entries. I scroll “down” as I read comments, so wouldn’t the older examples be “cited above” , not “cited below”??? I must be wrong in how I perceive this though, because everyone always says “as seen below,” and not the opposite. But it has never made intuitive sense to me.

I was moreso referring to the time a couple months ago when someone muted me because I suggested the Giants do this with Blake Snell, they replied asking me “When has that ever actually happened?” and I replied back asking “When has a player ever refused to sign with a team specifically *because* they traded him?”

I am fully aware that trading a player doesn’t put you at a disadvantage in signing him as long as you make him a serious offer and don’t try to lowball him.

Tiger Stadium was a great place to watch baseball. Not as iconically “different” as Wrigley Field with its ivy or Fenway with its Green Monster but iconic nonetheless. Full of so many memories for us old-timers but not without reason. Comerica is a beautiful park with far better accommodations but I’ve always thought they could and should have brought that awesome right field porch and flag pole from Tiger Stadium to Comerica, just to entice us sentimental old fools. To answer your question in short, sentimentality.

20 mil if he makes 15 starts this year. If he pitches like last year, he’ll opt out and turn down the qualifying offer, which would be a couple mil more than the 20, probably. Either way, great deal for Detroit. Even if he goes down in ST, it’s short term. Way better than the 5/100+ people were assuming.

Given his injury/effectiveness history, another platform season (with a significantly higher guarantee than last year) constitutes a good deal for both parties.

If it goes well – for a 2nd year in a row – he’ll opt out and make a killing next year, at a still-reasonably-young age of 30 yrs old.

Umless there is an injury or McKinistry totally bombs I don’t see a path to playing time and with others moving up the minor league ladder he will be blocked there soon too. The A’s were told if they don’t field a roster of $105 million this year they would receive a grievance and lose revenue sharing in 2026. All teams are required to spend 150% of what they receive in revenue sharing. The A’s are receiving $70 million this year from the league, that’s why Luis Severino, Jeffrey Springs, and Gio Urshela were signed right after, and then Rooker was given his 5-year, $60 million extension, which with the 2 option years raising the possible commitment to 7-years, $90 million, was actually their largest contract in team history.

Eric Chavez 6 years, $66 million was their largest contract before, both in annual salary at $11 million, and overall ceiling.

But the Pirates are a great parallel of cheapness. Until KeBryan Hayes got his extension, Jason Kendall for 6-years and $60 million was their largest. McCutchens extension was criminally low for the guy he was at 6-years, $51.5 million that maxed at 7-years and $66 million with the team option. And Hayes contract is 8-years, $70 million, signed 22 years after Kendall, so calling it “larger” feels wrong.

The A’s finished with salaries of $51M in 2022, $59M in 2023, and $63M last year.

        The Pirates finished with $48M in 2022, $59M in 2023, $70M in 2024.

Seattle finished with $118M in 2022, $140M in 2023, $143M in 2024. Literally spent more than the A’s and the Pirates combined every year. Not sure they belong in the salary hall of shame.

        The Rays and Orioles, OTOH….

Hold your breath for Jack Flahery staying healthy. If he’s on top of his game and all the pitchers stay healthy, the Tigers have a good rotation on paper:

    Skubal
    Flahery
    Olsen
    Jobe
    Cobb

It’s a great deal for Detroit. They basically covered themselves from him getting injured as much as a team can. He’s a #2 on the face. So, 25 mil is justified. And if he makes 15 starts, he’ll get 20 mil next season. He’ll opt out probably and Detroit can offer the QO. Great deal. If he’s hurt and doesn’t make 15 starts, he’ll still opt out or pitch for 10 mil. Again, great for Detroit.

Does Flaherty have a personality problem prohibiting him from landing a more lucrative deal? He is healthy again, pitching well, and one would think he could command 3-4 years at the very least at a slightly higher dollar figure. Unless teams think he has a problem.

Its his medicals. Even the Tigers need to see him start 15 games, a modest amount, before he can get more than $10MM in the second year. If true, he’s likely looking forward to one year contracts until the arm falls off.

There could be some issues there, since he is outspoken. But it more likely that he hasn’t had a big season since 2019, and has missed a lot of games. A bit like Rodon where he needed to put together two seasons to prove his durability.

Kinda late to the party here had to work. Hard not to like this deal. The only way this deal would go sideways is if Flaherty gets hurt. As long as he stays healthy it’s hard for the Tigers to lose here. I really disliked the Cobb signing it was one of my least favorites contracts this offseason but this one is certainly one of my favorites.

Maybe the Tigers can work some kind of swap out with the Padres for Suarez.

I think Jackson Jobe will be ROY. If he’s healthy he might be the best pitcher on the staff.
I’ve seen him pitch a couple times in the minors. I know it’s different, but when he’s dealing, he’s unhittable. All he needs is a little seasoning. By September he will be one of the best in MLB.

There’s always a few FA who inexplicably (or quite understandably) get a lot less than general expectations. Then we can look back and say….I wonder why my team didn’t sign him? What’s interesting about this is that he never, by his own admission, really got a lot of attention this off season. Did the market say “He’s’ gonna be too pricey?” Or did it say “Nah, I don’t know that I want him”

A good signing if not a 25% overpay. But it’s only one year. The front loading incentivizes Jack to pitch his backside off. Nobody expects him to take that second year pay cut unless he stinks then Flaherty basically replaces Maeda, next year, as a sunken cost. I don’t expect that to happen.

I think the Tigers are setting Skubal up to be paid bigly. Maeda and Flaherty will make $35 million between them this year. The Tigers can pay that to Skubal for the next 8-10 years. Cobb and his $15 million are also gone after this year. Harris is managing the payroll masterfully.

Casey Mize is in trouble. Do he and Maeda work in long relief? Englert probably drops from the 40 man.

Tiger rotation will be Skubal, Flaherty, Olson, Cobb and Jobe (in my opinion) coming out of Spring training. That’s not a bad starting 5.

Montero is SP depth. I’m not overly impressed with Tiger’s backup starter situation. Manning? Mattison? Gibson-Long (healthy?) Madden? Maeda? Mize? A lot of M’s in there.

Fetter and Hinch manage pitching as well as anybody in MLB. If the Tigers can get through 6 innings without giving up more than 2-3 runs their relief staff can hold the line.

THE TIGERS NEED TO SCORE AT LEAST 4 RUNS A GAME. CAN THEY?

Not after this signing. He will have to earn it in spring training. I would put Mize and Manning ahead of him, because I think he need more seasoning, and if they want value in a trade, they need to showcase those two.

I have no problem with your take. I had high hopes for Manning a few years back. Sadly, I think he’s destined for a Jacob Turner kind of career.
The Tigers definitely want Mize to win that 5th rotation spot. However, they know Jobe is eventually going to be somewhere in the mix.
My take is Jobe just needs to find his footing in the majors. If not out of Spring training, he will be solidly in the rotation by mid-year.
I would really like Mize to earn and keep that spot. He’s running out of time.

This endless unattributed input to the Bregman rumor mill while mildly entertaining, is obviously Scott Boras using the team media outlets of the various teams supposedly chasing Bregman to create the general impression that there is a heated rivalry between 4 or more clubs for Bregman’s services. Let’s be candid, Bregman wants to remain in Houston but the Astros have already replaced him. And there is no baseball or financial reason to undo that decision. There is a PR issue with Astro fans but saying nothing further on the matter is the best course there. Here’s a pro tip to discern where Bregman is going. The rumor mill falls SILENT- which means Boras has succeeded in drawing Houston back into serious negotiations. Or if all the noise continues unabated, then the focus moves to which team has the greatest need for a third baseman and which team can help Bregman most closely approximate the professional and personal life he had in Houston. There is no mystery which team is best positioned to do that. It’s more than obvious

It actually is news. The deal hadn’t been officially announced, whether due to completing a physical or to get the Tigers within the window where they can retain whomever they DFA to add Flaherty to the 40-man roster.

The player they DFA has to be traded, released or placed on waivers in 7 days, but they could pull him back from DFA when Spring Training begins and they can free up space by moving an injured player to the 60-day injured list (Sawyer Gipson-Long comes immediately to mind.) That would be six days from now.

Got to admit that the thing I like most about this is that the amount of fan support and discussion is back to where we were 10-15 years ago! This has excited the fan base, back to a level not seen since Verlander was our stud pitcher! This young exciting club is adding the pieces to compete with anyone, and it’s the beginning of a dynasty. I’m still not a Harris supporter, but at least they’re making moves that will make the club better. I still hope that they can sign a big bat that can hit some dingers when we need them, not sure Bregman is that guy, but maybe JD for a DH role, and possibly trade Tork and a couple extras for Cease to really make this team unhitable. Plus we can QO him after the season to get a good draft pick from him! I’d trade Tork and Manning with another down roster pitcher for him. Great to see optimism back in Motown
