Offseason In Review: San Francisco Giants

By Mark Polishuk | March 9, 2025 at 7:25am CDT

While not the blockbuster offseason some fans expected from the Giants' new front office, a couple of big names landed in San Francisco.

Major League Signings

  • Willy Adames, SS: Seven years, $182MM
  • Justin Verlander, SP: One year, $15MM

2025 spending: $36MM
Total spending: $197MM

Option Decisions

  • Blake Snell, SP: Opted out of final year of contract ($30MM in 2025)
  • Robbie Ray, SP: Declined to opt out of final two years of contract ($50MM over 2025-26 seasons)
  • Wilmer Flores, IF: Exercises $3.5MM player option for the 2025 season

Trades & Claims

  • Acquired minor league RP Braxton Roxby from Reds for RP Taylor Rogers and $6MM
  • Acquired IF/OF Osleivis Basabe from Rays for cash considerations
  • Acquired international bonus pool space from Red Sox for C/OF Blake Sabol
  • Acquired international bonus pool space from Marlins for minor league RHP William Kempner
  • Claimed C Sam Huff off waivers from Rangers

Notable Minor League Signings

  • Max Stassi, Joey Lucchesi, Jake Lamb, Raymond Burgos, Kai-Wei Teng, Ethan Small, Justin Garza, Miguel Diaz, Lou Trivino, Sergio Alcantara, Enny Romero, Logan Porter

Extensions

  • None

Notable Losses

  • Blake Snell, Rogers, Sabol, Michael Conforto, Mark Canha, Thairo Estrada, Curt Casali, Austin Warren

Willy Adames' $182MM contract represents the largest deal in Giants history, and perhaps marks an end to the narrative that the franchise is unable to attract top-tier talent to the Bay Area.  Bryce Harper, Aaron Judge, Carlos Correa (though that situation was rather unique), and Shohei Ohtani are a few of the major free agents who the Giants pursued but were unable to sign when Farhan Zaidi was the club's president of baseball operations, leaving fans perpetually frustrated at Zaidi's roster-building endeavors.

Things changed even before Zaidi was officially replaced by Buster Posey last September, as Posey (then acting in his capacity as a member of the Giants board of directors) took a very direct role in negotiating Matt Chapman's six-year, $151MM contract extension.  It is rare to see such extensions signed when a player is as close to Chapman was to the open market, and finalizing that deal indicated that Posey might be moving with more aggressiveness once he took the reins as the new PBO.

Giants had a great offseason. Not just the additions, (of which Matt Chapman should be counted) but the addition by subtraction. We’re rid of so much dead weight or over-priced dudes. There’s room for the youngin’s to get some playing time. And Jung Hoo Lee could be considered a big addition because he barely played last year. SF is def much improved. Snell will flame out in LA. IL by May.

Overall offensive production should be better from SS, 2B, LF, CF, C and DH for the season. Also, starting pitching depth is much improved and will take pressure off a taxed bullpen.
Then there are the intangibles. Posey is looking to create a culture of winning, harking back to the glory days and past stars to boost morale. Bob Melvin was hamstrung by his former boss’ reliance on spreadsheets; now the reigns are off and BoMel can run the team his way, not the nerd way. Analytics will always be around but the Giants literally won’t have to rub elbows with pencil pushers around their clubhouse anymore. Chapman and Adames will hold players accountable through their leadership, something that’s been gone since Posey retired as a player.
The Giants are not as good as the Dodgers on paper. Same probably for the DBacks and Padres. But SFG is better than last year, as a whole. With the Giants strength in pitching, that should carry the team and help them thru trade when needs arise.

Willy Adames is gonna add a couple wins to that team that don’t show up as WAR or in the box score. One of my favorite players. He just LOVES to play, keeps guys loose, constantly screwing around(in a good way) while also playing hard.

Giants got a good one there. A guy I knew the Brewers would lose so I’m alright with it, but I’ll be rooting for.

Kind of feels like they are still a year away from being a serious contender but they’re building a solid foundation. Lineup is more settled and a good mix of solid veterans and some promising young players. Some of the older vets carry some significant injury risk and I question whether they have the depth, especially on the hitting side, to cover. But the team has looked good so far this spring and I’m hopeful while they may not stack up with the top teams in the league that they will at least be watchable which would be an improvement over the last few years.

    Offensive Production:

The signing of Willy Adames is a significant boost to their offense. This will add power to the lineup. However, there are still questions about the overall consistency of the rest of the lineup. This area would likely receive a B to B+ grade.

    Starting Pitching Improvement:

The addition of Justin Verlander adds a veteran presence to the rotation. However, his age and recent injury history create some uncertainty. This area would likely receive a C+ to B- grade.

    Defensive Performance:

With the addition of Willy Adames, and Matt Chapman, the defensive side of the infield has improved greatly. This area would likely receive a B grade.

    Star talent aquisition:
The giants have aquired Willy Adames, which is a big step in the right direction. This area would receive a B+ grade.

    Overall Evaluation:

The Giants’ offseason was a mixed bag. They made some positive moves, particularly the signing of Willy Adames, but there are still areas of concern. Overall, they would likely receive a grade in the B- to C+ range.

A realistic win projection for the Giants would be in the 78-83 win range.

Adames defense looked bad on paper last year, but I really think a LOT of that was Joey Ortiz…who is not a 3B normally, he’d range so far over in front of Adames, it hurt his number of chances and it also served to like…screen Willy.

He’ll be back to being a really good defender, a good offensive player and I’d bet the over on 4.5 WAR. Plus, as I said above, he’s such a great player and teammate, his presence will be underrated.

One thing I think you’re incorrect about is starting pitching.
The group likes vey solid this spring and they’re deep if injuries strike. In particular, Ray looks dominant again and Roupp looks like Webb 2.0 but possibly better. Webb is Webb. JV looks strong and determined. Hicks gained weight and looks fine. Then there’s Harrison and Birdsong who’ve looked good but are destined for Sacramento.
The team as a whole is better than last year, that’s for sure.
