Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer joined the New York Post’s Jon Heyman and Joel Sherman for an interview on the latest edition of The Show podcast (YouTube link), and discussed a number of topics about both his team and baseball at large. Though we’re still several weeks away from the July 31 trade deadline, Hoyer did address his first-place team’s likeliest need.
“I think we’re going to be looking for pitching, both rotation and in the bullpen,” Hoyer said. “I don’t think that’s a secret. That’s not a knock on the guys we have. But I think in today’s game, you’ve got to keep building depth.”
Justin Steele pitched in just four games before his season was prematurely ended by a UCL revision surgery, thus robbing Wrigleyville of one of its top arms for almost the entirety of the 2025 campaign. Javier Assad hasn’t pitched at all this season due to a pair of oblique injuries, and since he only started playing catch a couple of weeks ago, it would seem that a return prior to the All-Star break might not be in the cards. Shota Imanaga hasn’t pitched since May 4 due to a hamstring strain, and Hoyer said “the hope is” Imanaga will be able to return to the rotation before the end of June.
Without their two top pitchers and another hurler in Assad that expected to at least compete for a back-end rotation job, Chicago has done well to hold its own on the rotation front even with such a depleted set of starters. Hoyer made a point of praising his in-house starters and his team’s defense for helping the run-prevention efforts, yet bringing at least one starting pitcher into the fold seems like a logical way to reinforce the roster heading into the pennant drive.
As one might expect, Hoyer didn’t share any hints about how big of a splash the Cubs are looking to make at the deadline, and still couched his comments within the framework of “if” the front office chose to make any additions by July 31. It could be that Hoyer may not know the answer to such questions himself at the moment, as the Cubs’ trade pursuits may hinge on Imanaga’s assumed healthy status by July 31, Assad’s progress, or any other injuries or pitchers who are under- or overachieving in the coming weeks.
Hoyer also said that Porter Hodge is expected to return from his own oblique injury before June is out, which will bring another high-leverage candidate back to help the relief corps. As Hoyer put it, however, bullpens are “always a work in progress…I don’t think you ever get to a point of feeling comfortable or feeling like it’s a set thing.” With this in mind, the pen will be a focus both on July 31, and “we’ll keep on making small transactions [before the deadline] as well to get marginally better.”
On the flip side of the equation, Hoyer doesn’t see the Cubs doing much to alter its impressive core of position players on the trade front. The Cubs have been one of baseball’s best hitting teams, with the powerful offense helping make up for any of the pitching staff’s shortcomings.
“Barring injury, there are probably some small things [we’ll consider] on the offensive side, but really I think that our position-playing group has been really good….The depth we have, top to bottom, I think we’re getting production both offensively and defensively from all our spots. That’s made a huge difference. As I think about it, pitching is the likely direction we would take if we were adding [at the deadline],” Hoyer said.
In terms of other topics, Hoyer said he wouldn’t comment publicly on either the existence of any extensions talks between the Cubs and Kyle Tucker, or even any talks between himself and the team on a new deal, as Hoyer’s current contract is up after the 2025 season. Hoyer repeated past comments about how he hoped Tucker would stay in Chicago over the long term, and how much he has enjoyed his own 14-season tenure in the organization as first a general manager and then the head of the baseball operations department.
Hoyer did go into a little more detail about what might now be the most impactful trade of his five-year run as PBO — the July 2021 deadline deal that brought Pete Crow-Armstrong to the then-rebuilding Cubs from the Mets for Javier Baez, Trevor Williams, and some cash considerations. New York took Crow-Armstrong 19th overall in the 2020 draft so it wasn’t as if PCA was an unknown quantity, yet a shoulder surgery limited the outfielder to only six games in his first pro season.
The Mets weren’t willing to discuss moving more highly-touted prospects at the time, as Hoyer said such players as Francisco Alvarez, Matt Allan, and Brett Baty were “off the table” in trade talks. Mark Vientos “was a guy that was kind of discussed a little bit but it was clear they didn’t want to part with him,” Hoyer noted, so discussions turned towards elsewhere on New York’s minor league depth chart.
Crow-Armstrong “was sort of out of sight, out of mind, I believe,” Hoyer said. “Looking back, I think his injury didn’t allow him to perform, and therefore I think he became a guy [the Mets] were willing to trade in that deal. So I think it was good fortune for us that they did take some really good players off the table, and most of those guys are helping the Mets right now, but Pete’s injury allowed that to happen and it worked out really well for us.”
While Hoyer felt Crow-Armstrong was going to improve as a hitter during his second full Major League season, even the executive admitted to being a little surprised at the extent of the breakout. PCA has been one of the very best all-around players in the sport, delivering 17 homers, 21 stolen bases, and a .277/.313/.559 slash line over 275 plate appearances while also playing Gold Glove-level defense in center field.
Might as well go for it since they’re not going to re-sign Tucker.
I knew that from the beginning.
That you would end up winning…
Tucker trade worked out well for them but they could have just kept Tauchman for 2m and got the same numbers!
Hoyer will take the blame when Tucker leaves but his hands tied by a tight wod owner in rickets!
Damn – Agreed, and the Red Sox are the most likely trading partner because of the Cubs connection with Breslow and Theo.
Chapman and Buehler or Giolito to the Cubs would make a whole lot of sense, all free agents after this season. Red Sox Nation would love to trade Bello as well, but the Cubs won’t want to take on that contract.
FPG – i wound up here just like you did, thinking what could the Sox throw at the Cubs?
Not sure what value Buehler currently has, he’d have to get A LOT better between now and then.
Bello’s contract really isnt unaffordable for just $6, $8, $16 and $19, and, quite honestly, a change of scenery (and coaching) might treat him well. That said, i’m not ready to give up on him unless Cora is definitely coming back next year.
Sad – Hoyer said he’s looking for a depth move, which sounds like a back-end of the rotation type guy …. that would be Buehler. For $7M, maybe less if the Sox are willing to subsidize, he could contribute like he did for the Dodgers last year in the postseason. His ERA is lower now than last year.
So you think Giolito has more trade value? How about Houck? Certainly Chapman will be a hot commodity.
The thing with Bello, teams don’t like to make big longterm commitments with players they don’t know. Regardless of how much it works out annually ($12.5M), it’s still a $50M commitment …. the Cubs aren’t known as big spenders, that’s a lot of money for them to gamble on.
I do agree he could turn things around with a different team that has a better manager and coaching staff.
Hoyer’s tenure as POBO has been marked by occasional odd unforced errors. This year’s was not tendering Tauchman. I guess they thought that between Alcantara and Caissie they had someone better. They didn’t, and the team has missed Tauchman’s bat.
Maybe they can get him back from the White Sox.
None of the guys the Red Sox could throw the Cubs way would be an upgrade over the guys the Cubs have or the guys the Cubs have coming back. It’s as funny a the dude who thinks Blackburn, Montas or Megill are upgrades for the Cubs. Guys always think they’re hand me downs are worth something they’re not. If the Cubs are going to make a deal it should be an improvement. I mean really? The Cubs already had Blackburn and one of the Megill’s not sure which one. What is this, Back to the Future? As far as dealing with Breslow I doubt that means anything at all. At least I would hope it doesn’t.
It’s probably safe to think Assad is going to be included in any deal for an established TOR starter. They’ll probably Pair him with Ballesteros.
They won’t get much for the injured Assad and the one dimensional and unproven ballisteros
Cal Quantrills available if you can stomach this one jed. Miami will pay you to take him here.
cubs get ranger suarez phillies get kyle tucker, everyone happy
“Cubs get Ranger Suarez, Phillies get Kyle Tucker, Phillies and their fans happy”
There, fixed that for you 👍
Throw in Taijuan Walker, then you have a deal.
Or Cubs get a 2 month rental like Heaney for just a prospect and they keep Tucker.
Heaney is not a proven postseason pitcher, unlike Suárez, who has a 1.43 ERA in 36 innings against the Braves, Astros and Padres offense
He isn’t available and Heaney is. And 36 innings years ago are irrelevant.
He is available, and he is pitching like an ace right now. Go and watch his numbers — Suarez is way better than Heaney.
Why would Suarez be available..?
Heaney is obviously better. Not even close!
If the Dbacks dont/cant course correct, Gallen, Kelly and Miller are on expiring contracts and may become available. That said, with Burnes out for ’26, the Dbacks may hold on to Kelly and re-sign him in the off-season. Lovullo and Hazen are very loyal, so I don’t expect they would trade Kelly and then re-sign him.
I see the D’Backs trading Gallen for sure, question what the return the D’Backs will get.
Cubs will have the Yankees to contend for Gallen, I believe. Heard one rumor about a week ago saying that Suarez and Gallen are on the Yankees radar. Could be a Suarez and Gallon in a deal involving Devin Williams, if Weaver comes back from his DL stint by the trade deadline.
Why would the Diamondbacks want an expiring contract of under performing relief pitcher?
If you aren’t a playoff team you wouldn’t want Williams or any expiring contract.
Don’t understand the loyalty. If you can get significantly more in trade than the QO pick you make the trade. Then sign Gallen back in 3 months. He will go wherever he can make the most money. Knowing Arizona and their taxes helps them if the $ is similar.
Get a real starting pitcher, a real closer and a real third baseman. That won’t happen, of course, because it’s Jed.
Or more likely because there aren’t any available.
Bednar Heaney Hayes
seamaholic, please don’t confuse ‘brilliant minds’ like mathew07, with actual facts and circumstances. It causes them stress.
Bednar, Heaney and Hayes? A failed reliever, An old LH pitcher( Of which the Cubs are already stacked ) with and horrible 3B on a bad deal. And people aren’t streaking to make deals with the Pirates? You can find more talent in the ACL.
Matt Shaw seems to be doing a pretty solid job since being called back up.
His defense has been outstanding and his hitting is much improved from his first stint.
Matt Shaw has been great since he’s returned from his small demotion. He is a “real” 3rd baseman. He’s made some Manny Machado throws from 3rd after people said he had a “Noodle arm” Cub fans were saying this.
Shaw is getting it done just fine. He didn’t need to be sent down to fix what his problem was. It was just timing. And he’s been more than good at 3B. His arm is just fine.
Jose Quintana, Craig Kinbrel, Aramis. Done
That’s dumpster diving.
Milwaukee is in the wildcard hunt and also attempting to chase down Chicago. 0% chance Quintana is available for the cubs. You’d have better luck striking a lasting peace deal in Gaza.
Wasn’t there a period between last season and this season when they could have done something? Michael Lorenzen cost like $30. His contract even included free shipping.
And how about both flaherty and luzardo when they were available.
I wouldn’t mind Chris Sale. Club option for 2026 worth 18 million.
Braves would need to be sellers, which looking how bad it’s going, they will be. Sale would be a huge boost. Hoyer definitely needs to be active though, this team needs to get an edge for the playoffs.
How about Chris Sale and Jared Kelenic for Pete Crow-Armstrong and Justin Steele! You are not going to have Steele for a while anyway, and he may or may not cone back to his pre-surgery success! There is an upside for somebody, somehow!
Why on earth would the Cubs ever trade the best CF in baseball? And he’s also the favorite to win the MVP too.
Chris Sale for Eli Morgan, and Ryan Pressly is more logical. Lol
Might be the best CF in baseball but the favorite to win the MVP ? Not by most experts
PCA leads the National League in WAR by a fairly large margin fifth in HR, second in RBIs second in stolen bases and hands down the best defender in baseball.
I’m actually loving the experience that Brown and Horton are getting with Brown going pitch for pitch with Skubal and Horton learning about not making the one bad pitch like he did in Detroit. And with the Cubs vaunted offense scoring zero runs for both of them it was a playoff like atmosphere. That’s experience they aren’t going to get in Iowa and it’s something they both need to grow. I’m not against the Cubs adding a starter at the deadline but make it make sense and don’t do anything stupid. They might not need an Ace type but a solid 2 or 3 would go a long way too. I wouldn’t turn down an Ace if one showed up though. This needs a guy making the deals who knows how to talk to teams. Wish we had one.
Agreed. The idea of trading for a starter isn’t BAD idea, but it has to be a good trade and a good starter.
Uncle, I have 2 thoughts- 1) I hear people talk about the Cubs getting a #1 SP – other than Sale (if the Braves throw in the towel), I don’t see even one, that’s going to be available. I laugh at all the would-be GMs who before the season hit mid May, all salivating over Miami’s Alcantara. And now, he’s not even in conversations.
And 2). How did the Cubs get to this point, with the GM, that you lambasted for the last year or two? I know I wasn’t too happy about the Tucker swap – – but you have been relentless on Hoyer.
Maybe you owe Jed, a Public Apology?
Comon, man-up, lol.
Hmmmm, Maybe, Maybe not. It’s been 2 months of a 6 month season. Still a long way to go Bone. A long way to go. Still I’m not as worried about the pen as I was. It looks like there are some young guys stepping up and some old guys getting it done. Assad, Birdsell and Noland might become pieces, but I think everybody would feel a lot better with another # 2 or #3 starter. But hey, So far so good. It might depend on what they do with Brown and Horton and how they grow or don’t grow I guess. I do agree that everyone was crowing about Luzardo and now he’s trash. I wouldn’t mind the Cubs getting Gallen if the price is right. I think he would fit nicely the rest of this year and then see if you can extend him.
Bullpens been really good. If Hodge gets healthy and continues to perform, as he’s been doing, there isn’t much room left. Presley about the only one who has been a bit scary. The LHRPs been outstanding.
I agree Shaw has been getting more and more reliable with each game. They do need another decent bat for Counsell. I heard someone comment that the FO thinks highly of Jon Long. We shall see. But I still believe they will begin to rest Horton, maybe a couple weeks on the IL, when Shota gets back in the rotation.
Pressly has been scary but also hasn’t given up an earned run in 22 of 23 appearance since April 1. Let that sink in….in over two months he’s only given up earned runs one time.
And in a sick kind of way those eight runs help set up a different approach in the pen that has worked unbelievably well.
Imanaga needs to hurry his a$$ back
Been out way too long
I’d prefer he get totally healthy than “hurry” anything.
I’d prefer he be able to cover first without hurting himself
I’m loathe to consider trading with the Cubs after the PCA deal, but the Mets do have a lot of SP depth. Wouldn’t trade a TOR arm, but maybe a Blackburn, Megil or Montas. Pitching tends to command a premium at the deadline so maybe add in a position player and upgrade at that specific spot?
What position is it exactly you think the Cubs need upgrading at? Because I don’t see one.
“I think we’re going to be looking for pitching, both rotation and in the bullpen,” Hoyer said. “I don’t think that’s a secret. That’s not a knock on the guys we have. But I think in today’s game, you’ve got to keep building depth.”
Did you even read the article?
NMK—the way you wrote your first post it does appear you are suggesting that the Cubs add in a position player to upgrade. I clearly read what you wrote as to grab a middling pitching and upgrade at a position also. To me, it looks like Unclemike read both the article and your post. Were you insinuating that the Cubs trade the Mets a position player for the list you put out??
Do you have any idea what a position player is? LMAO
If I were to offer a Blackburn and McNeil or Mauricio, yeah, I’d want a starting position player. Not asking for an ace for garbage, but pitching>position player.
I don’t think they actually need a position upgrade. It’s actually a bench upgrade they could use since Brujan only has speed and no offense.
Swanson fine defensively but easy strike out with runner on third less than two outs and it’s been happening over and over again. Problem there nobody to push him at shortstop
Relief pitcher, maybe starting pitcher
Baez PCA was made by a awful gm and was awful trade from day 1. If you haven’t noticed management has improved since.
Them and 29 other teams, one way or the other.
Ask the Rockies for Jake Bird. Too bad Nathan Eovaldi is injured. He’s usually a good playoff pitcher. Not a lot of great options out there, on losing teams or teams out of contention. It won’t happen but go get Sale from the Braves. That would make for a good trade deadline for the Cubs.
Too bad Matt Allan was off the table in 2021, because he wound up on the operating table twice for Tommy John. Regardless, time will tell if he can become what he was supposed to be
The title should just read “ all teams looking for pitching at the deadline”
SFG probably not…
Mets seem set. Philly probably alright. Seattle.
Teams that seem set now will probably not be set at the deadline. Everyone can use an extra bullpen piece
Blessed with good health atm but I think the Giants are good there as well. Selling a piece or 2 for some offence maybe even. .
The Bad Market Buccos should make Keller, Falter, Heaney, and Bednar available, And, yes, even Paul Skenes – at an extraordinarily steep price for the Cubs to pay.
From the foto, looks like Jed’s having a ball
Regarding the offensive side: Even if we accept that the core of everyday position players should not be fiddled with–and I have some reservations there because, good as Suzuki and PCA and Happ have been, their strikeout rate is high even by today’s standards, and it has cost us some games–but even if we accept that, certainly there are improvements to be made with the bench. Berti is good for what he is, but McGuire, Turner and Brujan all could be replaced with better options. (Has anyone heard anything about Amaya’s timetable, btw?)
All that I have heard reported is that Amaya won’t be back until at least after the all star game
Another 4-6 weeks last news I heard.

Call Mike Elias about Sugano or Batista….and block every prospect he has interest in. After all, he can’t complain b/c that’s been his approach when he was the buyer. For good measure whine to the press that “he is asking for way too much” for his players.
If you’ve seen any of Riley Reid’s movies then you’d know she belongs in tier 1 not 3
Oh thank goodness, I was a little worried that no team was going to want pitching at the deadline!
Why is this news, every contending team is going to be looking for pitching at the deadline.
I hear some saying Sandy Alcantara… he hasn’t done particularly well but I believe he will turn it around. Maybe an option for the Cubs?
The Force is strong in young PCA!
Why does Swanson continue to bat 5th instead of moving both Busch an Horner up one? Swanson should not be in an rbi position.
After we get swept by very ordinary Phillies with own sets of problems, we get back to playing teams like pirates. Need starting pitching asap!
I keep waiting for Tucker to get a big hit in a key situation. I want to see that so much. But he just doesn’t. And not all the pitchers who are beating him are Cy Youngs.
I know that the empirical fact that Tucker is not all that good creates a cognitive dissonance for some of you that is very hard for you to deal with. But this is a player the Cubs should NOT try to resign–for the money Boras reportedly wants or for any money. It can be much better spent.
Bruce and Alan, you guys are hilarious. You comment and the opposite happens.
It’s as funny as the guy with his tiers that are so far off it’s hilarious. Long should be here now in place of Turner but for 2 things, The 5 million bucks Turner is getting and they don’t want to break up the Bromance he has going with PCA. Whether he’s a settling influence over the team or not IDK but there’s no reason to break it up while they’re winning. Wiggins, Sanders and Gallagher are dominating wherever they move them up to. Cubs are going to have to make some tough decisions when Hodge, Assad, and Imanaga get healthy soon. As for Tucker I could debate whether the trade was worth it for a 1 year rental until the cows come home but that was done because we have a POBO on an expiring deal. Besides that one won’t be known until after the season and years to come yet.
Imamaga looks like he could be activated in ten days. Rea can go back to long relieve. They’ll have to cut Genesis (LIFO).
Assad and Hodge can rehab up to 30 days and be optioned, if necessary. The bullpen has been killing it lately, but I’ll jinx them by saying someone is due to tank or get hurt.
As a Mets fan, this stings but at least we don’t have to hear about Jarred Kelenic anymore.
Hey hoyer, why not sign luzardo because of medical records when you’re so good at signing rehabbed pitchers at low cost. Luzardo looks so fine now against your cubs who still need pitching and will overpay for it.
