Here are three things we’ll be keeping an eye on around the baseball world throughout the day:
1. Lopez likely headed to IL:
Twins right-hander Pablo Lopez exited his start yesterday with what was termed right shoulder tightness at the time of his departure, but after the game he revealed to reporters (including Phil Miller of the Star Tribune) that he’s actually suffering from a right lat strain. Lopez told reporters that he’s set to undergo imaging to determine the severity of the strain, but Miller added that the right-hander sounded resigned to the fact that he would almost certainly be placed on the injured list. Losing Lopez, who has a 2.82 ERA and 2.97 FIP so far this year, is a tough blow, but the Twins are better equipped to lose a front-line starter than most organizations, with younger arms like David Festa and Simeon Woods Richardson ready to go at Triple-A. Twins starters are fifth in the majors with a collective 3.43 ERA this season.
2. Tigers 40-man move incoming:
The Tigers are expected to activate right-hander Sawyer Gipson-Long from the 60-day IL today. Detroit’s 40-man roster is already at capacity, meaning someone will need to be pulled off the roster in order to make room for Gipson-Long. The Tigers have no obvious 60-day IL candidates, so the most likely outcome is that they’ll have to designate a player for assignment today. Of course, it’s also at least possible that a player currently on the 10- or 15-day IL has a longer path to recovery than is currently publicly known. Another possibility would be working out a trade that creates 40-man roster space, though that seems especially unlikely at this stage of the calendar.
3. Woodruff exits rehab start:
Right-hander Brandon Woodruff’s path back to a big league mound after missing the 2024 season due to shoulder surgery has been a long one. An ankle injury at the tail end of his time rehabbing that shoulder injury caused the Brewers to reset his rehab clock, and while he was expected to finally be on the verge of making it back to the big leagues after yesterday’s rehab outing, another potential setback occurred once again when he was struck by a line drive on his right elbow.
Woodruff left the game after the incident, and while MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy notes that initial x-rays were negative, Woodruff is set to receive more extensive testing from the team’s medical staff today. Fortunately for the Brewers, they’re suddenly deep in starting pitching at the moment, with a full rotation of five starters in the majors plus multiple depth options like Logan Henderson and Tobias Myers at Triple-A.
Sure hope Woodie is ok, that liner was mean!
108 off the elbow, ouch!
Put that man in bubble wrap! Good grief, we’re all so excited to see him back in action. We’ll just have to see how his resistance plays out.
Tigers please send Baddoo packing!!
It looks like he will never be able to hit his way out of a paper bag, I agree, but the defense is impressive, I think he’s even better than Riley Greene in the field! Did you see those two first inning catches? He saved Jobe and the team in that game. In extremely limited play, he has a + 0.3 WAR because of his stellar defense.
Congratulations to Devin Williams on getting his 6th save of the season.
I don’t know which baseball god Brandon Woodruff offended, but he’d better find out and make amends. Poor guy can’t seem to catch a break.
Edit – I should be careful with phrasing, it’s very likely he CAN catch a break, which is the entire problem
Nothing that some sandpaper couldn’t fix.
@BrianCashmansBurner
So, what’s the Yankees deadline plans? Trade for Woodruff?
The surest thing I can tell you is that we will neglect the obvious need for a 2b/3b and do something annoying like send a top 10 prospect for a reliever that will promptly turn into a pumpkin.
I know this is your burner Cashman but dang it do you need to be so honest?
Jazz hit a HR first game back from the DL yet Cashman cries “we need a 2B/3B”. How daft!
I get your gripe with Cabrera. In a little over 850 AB’s spread out over 4 seasons you might start saying that we know who he is. Jazz looks like a different situation, though. I know he hasn’t had much more than 300 AB’s but he seems to be blossoming in New York, something a lot of people didn’t think was going to happen.
Tigers have an envious problem. 4 or 5 years ago, the team was loaded with players fans wanted gone ASAP. Now, the talent level is so different that those decisions aren’t anywhere as easy as they used to be.
We are also a target for Rule 5 heists.
Oh well. It’s nice to be winning.
The Tigers could call up Jason Foley then put him on the 60 day IL, but they could have done that for Meadows. I believe Foley gets paid his major league salary regardless.
If Baddoo gets DFA’d, I hope the Rockies take a chance on him. I think he’d do well in Colorado.
Personally, I would DFA Kreidler. I doubt anyone would take him.
The lack of contact is alarming, and I’m reticent to admit that I think Preller wants to fix Baddoo… so I hope CR does grab him before we can, hypothetical DFA permitting!
@Bob
Neither of them can hit to save their lives, but they are both outstanding in the field.
All of a sudden the Brewers have a plethora of pitching depth. I can see them trimming the games back on the Cubs.
@Acoss1331
And some rando named choof claimed that I was wrong for saying that they were using April as a controlled burn period to protect their real rotation for when divisional races heat up in June–September. Once again, I was right… Guys, you need to understand baseball not just watch you phone and listen to what the TV talking heads tell you.

The Donkey Boys have had a terrible string of bad luck this year. Profar: suspended. Alvarado: Suspended. R Lopez: out at least several months. AJ Smith-Shawver: out for the year. Now Pablo goes down.
IL stints for Nola, Chisolm, J Martinez, Otto Lopez, DeJong, Amaya. When will it end?
October
That liner off the elbow is gonna cause him to hit the IL till July I bet
