The Opener: Tatis, Suarez, Devers

By Nick Deeds | June 20, 2025 at 8:47am CDT

Here are three things we’ll be keeping an eye on around the baseball world throughout the day:

1. Tatis undergoing imaging:

Padres star Fernando Tatis Jr. was hit by a pitch on his hand during last night’s game against the Dodgers, which resulted in a benches-clearing skirmish. Tatis was sent for x-rays after the game, which produced inconclusive results (via Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune). Tatis told reporters (including Acee) that there was a “gray area” in the results and that he was set to undergo additional imaging. The 26-year-old sports a 131 wRC+ overall this year but has been mired in a lengthy slump in recent weeks, slashing just .214/.325/.291 over his past 27 games. An injury for Tatis would only further exacerbate the Padres’ need for outfield help, as they’d likely wind up relying on some combination of Tyler Wade and Tirso Ornelas to help cover if Tatis misses time.

2. Suárez nearing milestone:

Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suárez is nearing what would be his first career trip into free agency this winter, but in the meantime the slugger is enjoying a strong season at the plate. He’s slashed .237/.313/.533 with a 130 wRC+ so far this year for Arizona, slugging 22 homers in just 74 games. That puts him at 298 career homers overall, leaving him just two long balls away from becoming the 164th player in history to launch 300 home runs during his career. It’s an exciting milestone that could be right around the corner: Suárez has 18 multi-homer games in his career, including two this season.

The slugger will attempt to reach the 300-homer plateau in favorable conditions this weekend as the Snakes head to Colorado for a weekend series at Coors Field. The D-backs will face lefty Austin Gomber, lefty Carson Palmquist and righty Antonio Senzatela this weekend. Squaring off against two lefties should be favorable for the righty-swinging Suárez, but he uncharacteristically has severe reverse splits in 2025 despite having hit lefties far better than righties over the course of his career overall.

3. Devers reunited with Red Sox in San Francisco:

An awkward reunion is in the cards for this weekend, as the Red Sox are headed to San Francisco less than a week after trading franchise face Rafael Devers to the Giants. Devers, who has gone 2-for-8 with a double and a walk so far as a Giant, has agreed to play first base for his new club after declining to do so in Boston. He’s only appeared at DH in three games with the team so far but has suggested he could be in the lineup at first base as soon as this weekend. The first game of this weekend set is scheduled for 7:15pm local time and will feature a face off between youngsters Hunter Dobbins (3.74 ERA) and Hayden Birdsong (2.79 ERA).

The Dodgers have a manager that bumps old men and threatens to beat them up when the cameras aren’t on them. Such men should not be professional managers.

Fever—the Sox/Yanks rivalry is only fun when both teams are good. Right now, one team is good the other is the Red Sox.

I disagree Fever. Sox/Yanks is about more than just the games; it’s the players and the fans as well. Red Sox and Yankees fans are die-hard, knowledgeable fans that can even respect the accomplishment of the other team when necessary. SoCal fans are largely “fair weather” fans that “love” their teams when they are winning and completely disappear when they aren’t. i have unfortunately seen more than a few fan brawls at Dodger Stadium and never witnessed one in person at Fenway. Dodgers and Padres players don’t hate the other organization and many of the same players pass through both and you just don’t have that passion and intensity

Chance – I agree, but even if both were good the intensity still wouldn’t be there.

There is no bad blood between them because so many players on both teams are new.

Rsox – To clarify, I meant from a team perspective …. not a fan perspective.

I’m not in a position to gauge the rivalry level between Padres fans and Dodger fans, but you could be right on a fan level. This quote from ESPN kinda says it all, empty stadium with Ohtani coming up and only a 3-run deficit:

“Anger filled Dodger Stadium, by which point a sold-out crowd had mostly filed out.”

The Dodgers had 2 million fans show up at Dodgers Stadium after just 40 games this season. While I agree that there are some fair weather fans, they come with any successful team, there are plenty of passionate, diehard, don’t leave early fans. Lifers like me. I went through the Fox ownership, to the McCourt ownership to now. And I know plenty of Dodgers fans that can say the same. That’s nothing close to fair weather. Dodgers fans went through a lot to get to this point. We had Vin Scully narrating our games as children through adulthood. None of you had anything close.

Yeah, lately because the Padres have been run extremely well, and they’re a really good ball club, and for a few seasons now. The Giants have taken a pretty big step back in recent years, outside of 2021.

Not to excuse that behavior as I have never left early and would only do so in an emergency (the quake would have to be above a 6!) but most of those fans likely left in the 8th when it was 5-0.

Dodgers Stadium is right in the middle of downtown, and L.A. is the definition of urban sprawl. People who can afford a ticket live a half hour away without the neverending traffic and cluster-eff parking lot factored in. Roberts should 100% be suspended. He’s the one who escalated here and came out of the dugout to shove Schildt. Not the first time he’s shoved a Padres manager too, he’s always the common denominator in this beef.

He got tossed the other night too for arguing after being warned. Still came out and bumped into the umps. It’s wild that Ohtani has so much more maturity than his manager.

Reggie – agree the Red Sox made out with that deal. Even if Devers turns out to be passable defensively at 1B he’s 28 already. He won’t be as good in a couple years. That’s a lot to give up for a DH even if he maintains close to his career batting production.

Overall I agree, however if Devers hits to his top levels for most of the deal then the Giants will be thrilled. David Ortiz was a game changer as a DH, Kyle Schwarber is the best hitter on the Philllies (except for peak Bryce).

Certain guys can bend the norms. But frankly I don’t expect Devers to age well unless he grows up. Get and stay in peak shape and stop with the entitled arrogance. More reactions from around baseball coming out where players around the game think that, despite the failings of the RS front office Devers was a punk in how he handled things and his was the greater fault.

No doubt he handled it immaturely. Doesn’t everyone have a story about how they handled a situation poorly ? You don’t define someone from a single stoush. You need a track record. The Giants did their due diligence on the guy. They are smart people. Assuming he is going to be an ongoing problem is also immature.

@foppert – First, I have never defined someone from a “single stoush” before, and probably never will – unless someone explains to me what that is. Secondly, if you actually read what I said, it uses the phrase “unless he grows up”, which clearly allows for the potential for growth.

@Foppert – thanks. I don’t follow Australian rules FB so that was not a part of my lexicon.

Your timeline is backwards however. It was immaturity on the parts of both the RS org and Devers that created the “stoush” and the exacerbated it as it played out, rather than the breakup that created the immaturity.

And when the $300M designated hitter refused to grab a glove to try to learn a new position to support his team and went public with his pouty behavior, that fell into a higher level of awful behavior for me…others disagree. But I don’t have a passionate axe to grind against the organization either, as so many on here do.

As a Phils fan I would be pretty darned happy with 4 titles in the past twenty-ish years, rather than our two in 140 plus years. Even given the changed approach from your ownership since 2019. when it comes to resources and engagement.

Carver-I don’t necessarily diagree with your take but it appears as sour grapes now that he’s gone. I think all passionate Red Sox fans need to put Devers in the rearview mirror and move on with the team. But I am a Giants fan and didn’t get as excited as most. I will judge the trade once I’ve had a chance to watch him operate as a Giant. He couldn’t stand how the FO treated him and they couldn’t understand why he wanted out. I realize it’s only been close to a week, but all indications are that he loves Buster, Zack and Melvin. His attitude has been great for now and he really likes his teamates, as he also did in Boston. We all know he’s very capable of a good attitude and doing what he’s told and being a good team first guy. Key word is “capable”. I don’t see that changing. End result is regardless of the situation in Boston, I think he’ll be a big asset going forward. I also think it will workout just fine for Boston also.

@mab – Hard for it to be sour grapes when I am not a RS fan in any way. Phils fan, as noted in my response that you apparently missed.

As a baseball fan and someone that played the game for nearly forty years, the Devers approach was appalling to me. The drama in Boston, however, was basically amusing in many ways as an outsider.

Hopefully Raffy grows up and is a productive citizen and hitter out there…good luck with it.

If we could go back to the beginning of the season to look at my replies on the Devers issues, I laid into Devers for not being a team player. I didn’t like the way he handled it. But the FO also has responsibility in how they handled their best player. Unfortunate it happened but time to move on. Both teams need to get wins.

The Red Sox saving money on a contract only benefits the owners unless they take all that money and spend it elsewhere. I don’t understand the celebration.

        Last Offseason:
        Garret Crochet: $170M
        Alex Bregman: $120M
        Walker Buehler: $21M
        Plus several small deals.

Now that they’re finally reached contention, they’re going to stop spending? Come on.

Who said they have to spend all $230M in June?

          1) Trade deadline theres several teams looking to dump good players on bad short-term contracts.
          2) They have 8 years to spend the money, hopefully they take their time and choose wisely.

You think they weren’t going to spend at the trade deadline before the Devers deal?

Heck now that they traded him they might be sellers because they are a worse team in the short term than they were. Because they were a marginal contender before the trade.

Again its only a good thing if they spend the money they saved.

Sorry, I dont have a ‘must spend $230M in June to justify the trade’ that you do.

I’ll make the argument, that the kids will be more relaxed and will play better, now that the problem child is gone. Did you know after refusing to play first base, he gave one of the kids crap for volunteering to play there?

Red Sox should spend the money how they see fit, whether its this year or not. Since they were “marginal contenders” with Devers, whats the rush? Investing 101: Research and invest wisely rather than make an impulse buy.

Giants had a graphic how his walk % has gone from 8% in 2022 to 10% in 2023 to 11% in 2024 and now 17% in 2025.

Now that he’s in a quality environment, he should be able to avoid any prolonged slumps.

It’s gonna be a new tradition for Red Sox Nation now, after watching Red Sox games to switch to Giants games when they are on the West Coast just like we do with Mookie and Xander.

Gotta disagree with you Fever, I think it’ll be a chore for Devers to get 500.

He’s more of a very good overall productive hitter rather then a true power slugger. He only has three 30+ homer seasons out of his 8 seasons so far.

Assuming he stays where he is for a while, he’ll be playing half his future games in SF, with the heavy ocean air and no green monster.

He’s currently sitting at 215 homers. He has to hit nearly 300 more to get 500 and he’ll have to do most of that while over 30 years of age and in a less favorable park.

I see him more likely in the 400-450 range for his career.
(Unless he gets traded to Houston soon so he can hit in that bandbox)

braves – Correct, ARod played nearly 1,300 games at shortstop before joining the Yankees.

The only reason ARod switched from SS to 3B is because Jeter refused to move off SS, unlike Devers who graciously agreed to move off 3B. That’s because Devers is a team player and Jeter was not.

Does anyone think it is possible for Suarez to possibly enter HOF discussion after a few more years? He is right around 1400 hits and 300 homers at age 33. He probably doesn’t have enough time left to attain first ballot status, but do you think he could work his way into being one of those squeaker guys? Obviously he is not there yet and might never get there, but he might have to be seriously considered with another 600-800 hits and 100-150 homers. That is possible with another 5 years or so.

. Dodgers have hit Tatis way too many times, have they hit any other Padre in this series nope. Looking back last year, they hit in 4 times, nope this is a trend, Roberts has to be asked, Tatis is a star player why they hitting him that is the question. Old school baseball stars say let the teams settle this, that is what the Padres were doing you hit our star numerous times, there is a limit, when you see a trend of one player getting hit often, there is going to be a response and it is the other team star player that is going to have the bullseye on him. MLB is not going to stop this; it is like fights in Hockey let the teams settle it. look back in the 80’s and 90’s on utube under MLB fights. Ohtani knew what was coming, that is why he wave his team off from coming onto the field, you hit our star for the 3rd time we hit your star for the 3rd time. It is what it is, Roberts was in the wrong, he won’t admit it, that is why he took his stars out of the game, he meant for this to happen just for his team to keep the edge. He figured Ohtani was not going to come up again in the ninth, he dares not PH for him, that would show cowardice after the incident. He knew the Padres would retaliate. This is not going to end they still have six more games to play. Odds says that Tatis will be hit the next game the Dodgers and Padres play, Roberts needs to answer why do they hit Tatis so much seven times in the last two, three seasons.

Sure. I’m surprised at Foul Territory. I’d have to watch it to see the context. The second go sounds feasible. Not sure on the finer details of baseball justice.

Not surprised at MLB Network at all. He is a big Golden Goose. Doing their jobs.

Ironically, after last night’s HBPs, FT stated the Pads were on the right side of this. But, then again, AJ Perzeinski wasn’t there to derail the conversation either.

I thought the best part was Teo and Shildt bonding and walking off into the sunset together a la the end to every Mel Brooks movie ever made

There are a lot of genuine good guys on the Dodgers, Dave Roberts isn’t one of them
