Mariners To Acquire Eugenio Suarez

By Anthony Franco | July 31, 2025 at 3:01am CDT

The Mariners and Diamondbacks are reportedly in agreement on a trade that’ll send Eugenio Suárez back to Seattle. The D-Backs are getting rookie first baseman Tyler Locklear, reliever Juan Burgos and minor league pitcher Hunter Cranton in return. The deal is expected to be officially announced on Thursday.

Seattle has made a Suárez reunion their top deadline priority. They’ll get their man, bringing back a two-time All-Star who combined for 53 home runs in a Mariners uniform between 2022-23. The M’s made the regrettable decision to trade Suárez away after the ’23 season. That netted hard-throwing middle reliever Carlos Vargas but was primarily motivated by a desire to shed the $13MM that remained on the third baseman’s contract at the time.

While Suárez started his Arizona tenure slow, he’s been one of the best hitters on the planet dating back to the middle of last summer. Over the past calendar year, Suárez has hit 53 home runs with a .273/.332/.589 slash line. He’s tied with Kyle Schwarber and teammate Cal Raleigh for third in MLB in homers during that stretch. Only Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge have hit more. Suárez went on such a tear in the second half last year that the D-Backs had an easy call to bring him back on a $15MM club option that once looked likelier to be bought out.

Suárez has shown no signs of slowing down at age 34. He has mashed at a .248/.321/.577 clip across 433 plate appearances. He and Raleigh are tied for the MLB lead with 87 runs batted in. Only Raleigh, Ohtani, Judge and Schwarber have more home runs. He’d led the American League in strikeouts during both seasons in his first run with Seattle. The 12-year big league veteran has trimmed his strikeout rate by a few percentage points in Arizona. There’s still a decent amount of swing-and-miss, but it’s not at the same rate that surely alarmed the M’s front office a couple years ago.

The Diamondbacks were on the fringe of the NL Wild Card race as recently as two weeks ago. A sweep at the hands of the Astros sealed their fate as deadline sellers. Houston’s division rivals have ironically been the big beneficiary. The D-Backs began their sell-off by dealing Josh Naylor to Seattle last week. He displaced Luke Raley as the starting first baseman. Suárez rejoins him as an impact corner infield tandem. It’ll likely push light-hitting rookie infielder Ben Williamson back to Triple-A.

Seattle now runs out a lineup including Raleigh, Suárez, Naylor, Julio Rodríguez, Randy Arozarena, Jorge Polanco and J.P. Crawford. Right fielder Dominic Canzone has mashed since being called up from Triple-A in early June. It’s the imposing lineup that Seattle has tried for years to build alongside their elite rotation.

The M’s are nevertheless far from guaranteed to make the playoffs. They’re currently tied with the Rangers for the AL’s last Wild Card spot and sit five games back of Houston in the division race. They’ve poked around the market for another late-inning reliever. Seattle added left-hander Caleb Ferguson to the bullpen on Wednesday evening, but he’s more of a complementary piece. If the Mariners have another big move in them, it’d probably be in the late innings.

The Mariners are taking on nearly $5MM in salary still owed to Suárez for the stretch run. They assumed almost $4MM on Naylor and close to $1MM for Ferguson. It’s a significant change from an offseason in which ownership left the front office without much budgetary flexibility. They’re all-in as they try to capitalize on Raleigh turning in one of the greatest seasons ever by a catcher. Suárez and Naylor might be the two best impending free agent hitters to move. The acquisition should be very well received in the clubhouse, as Suárez is a highly-regarded teammate with whom much of the roster is familiar.

Seattle gave up a trio of players to make that happen. Locklear, 24, is the most intriguing. He’s a righty-hitting first baseman who could replace Naylor as Arizona’s long-term answer at that position. Seattle took the Virginia Commonwealth product in the second round in 2022. The 24-year-old doesn’t have much big league experience. He appeared in 16 games last season, hitting .156 while striking out 20 times in 49 plate appearances.

Plenty of hitters struggle in their first look at MLB pitching. Locklear has posted excellent minor league numbers. He’s a career .291/.392/.502 hitter against minor league arms. That includes a huge .316/.401/.542 showing in Triple-A this season. Locklear has connected on 19 home runs in 434 plate appearances. Seattle just recalled him this afternoon to replace Raley, who went down with back spasms. Instead, he’s off to Arizona, where he’ll probably jump directly onto the MLB roster.

Burgos, 25, could also get an MLB look in the near future. Seattle called up the 6’0″ righty in late June. Burgos didn’t get much of a look over a three-week stint in the big league bullpen. He made four appearances, working 6 2/3 frames of three-run ball with eight strikeouts. Burgos showed a five-pitch mix built around a low-90s cutter and a mid-90s sinker.

He doesn’t have elite velocity for a bullpen prospect, but he has punched out an above-average 26.1% of batters faced over 31 innings between the top two minor league levels. Burgos has an absurd 0.87 earned run average in that stretch. Baseball America ranked him 25th among Seattle prospects, while he placed 17th at MLB Pipeline. Both outlets feel he’s a low-variance middle relief type.

Cranton is further off. Seattle drafted him in the third round last summer out of the University of Kansas. He was an underslot signee as a senior draft pick. MLB Pipeline ranked the 6’3″ righty as the #16 prospect in the Seattle system. He placed 23rd on Eric Longenhagen’s writeup at FanGraphs last month. He did not rank among BA’s top 30. Cranton has an upper-90s fastball and a slider. He was on the minor league injured through the end of June after being struck in the head by a comebacker during Spring Training, Longenhagen notes.

None of the three players are top-end prospects. The lack of a true headliner might come as a disappointment to Arizona fans, but it reflects teams’ general reluctance to give up elite young talent for rentals. The D-Backs added a pair of controllable players who could play meaningful roles as they try to return to competitiveness in 2026. In the meantime, they’ll eventually get their first real look at third base prospect Jordan Lawlar. Lawlar isn’t quite ready to return from a June hamstring injury that sent him to the Triple-A injured list, but he should get 4-6 weeks of everyday playing time to close the season.

Arizona has traded three impending free agents: Naylor, Suárez and Randal Grichuk. They’ll move at least one and possibly both of Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly tomorrow. They could also try to move an outfielder or short-term relievers like the currently injured Shelby Miller or Kevin Ginkel. There’s plenty more to come from the Snakes over the next 18 hours.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan first reported the Mariners were reacquiring Suárez. Daniel Kramer of MLB.com had the return going to Arizona. Images courtesy of Imagn Images.

Not Cole Young- …..unless he’s moved in a separate move for a player with more value than a 2 mo rental, someone under team control. It’s M Mastrobouni 🫡 and/or adieu monsieur Dylan Moore 👌Both will likely be in DFA limbo, at least one or both might not get picked up, who needs defense/glove first UT/Bench bats who are in offensive tailspins. Williamson will fill a late defensive role and likely give Geno a breather at 3B 1-2 times every couple weeks. Let Geno DH.

Moving MM also opens the door to reward another one of the young players in making a Sept debut. Kids who have been raking in the Minors, like young INF M Arroyo who with Lazaro Montes is handling the jump to AA Pitching at the Pitcher friendly Arkansas Park. The majority of every young SEA MiLB players normally see a drop in their offensive metrics at DS Park. Ya never know with Dipoto and the Ownership’s level of commitment to make the team better this yr.

He was quite literally on your team already. Your team didn’t want him. Now that he’s hit a little better for a different team in a different ballpark in a different league… he’s the missing piece in Seattle? Arizona’s infield was all Seattle needed? Got it.

I was fine with trading Cam Smith, but I think Cubs should keep Caissie, Alcantara, Horton, Ballesteros and Wiggins. I always assumed Tucker was a one year rental.

Hope Siroka acquisition will let Cubs rest Boyd and Horton a little.

Yeah, the #2 farm system that the Brewers have, with a plethora of young controllable pitching which is what AZ said they wanted, never had a chance. The only farm system better than the Brewers got the trade.

I’m with you on agreeing on what he meant when he said it, and he catches too much flack for that, cuz it’s still a decent winning record.
But right now even .550 barely makes the last wild card in the NL.
Fine regular season goal for an organization. but a GREAT goal is winning your division. Right now, that’s a min 57%. That’s the bar.

His changes have been incredibly minor the major change has been the quality of opponent. Can he be a major league player sure but to say he’s going to be anywhere near Walker is absurd.

Yet you choose to completely ignore his entire 2025 season at Cheney, one where he currently ranks as the 2nd best hitter in the PCL? A guy has added more muscle to an all ready powerful lower body. His quads are huge this year and he’ll be flying high in confidence from his .390 BA 1.150 OPS 22 XBHs and 44 RBI’s over his last 30g? Instead you choose to frame your narrative based on a handful games in his SSS debut where he didn’t get a chance to play everyday?

You probably gave up on Pete Crow Armstrong and/or Jarren Duran after their first yrs too

Another way to look at it if you put the Naylor trade and Suarez trade together, the D’Backs received 4 of the Mariners top 17 prospects for two players that are FA’s after the season is over and will the Mariners be able to resign both of them. Being a D’Backs fan I’m pretty happy with the two deals with Seattle. Now what are they going to get for Gallen and Kelly today.

You could, but I’ve always thought of both Cranton and Burgos as guys I hope to use as trade chips. I also disagree with Pipeline’s rankings there and believe players like Suisbel, Van Scoter, Sundstrom, and Cali should be ranked higher. I honestly would have been fine if we gave up more to get those two players. And while I think Locklear has a chance to be good for you guys, he was my preference to go if we traded from the top 10, followed closely by Ford.

SLL how many years did it take for Marte to reach the level he is at now? He showed a ton of upside but was uncoachable. He was young probably brought up too early. He was very immature. You can’t just go back in time and say that trade sucked with no backstory. Like the Varitek trade. He made it clear he didn’t want to play in Seattle. He was going to be trouble the whole time until traded. We also had Dan Wilson at the time which made it an easier trade to accept. Was Dan as good as Varitek no but was good.

He’s athletic but he lacks the agility to play the hot corner, besides Seattle had every chance to let him learn how to play 3B this yr down the I-5 in Tacoma

As long as you just continue to impress us all with your obvious qualifications as an expert on spotting a President of operations of a major league team. One who can operate under severe handicapping by a miserly ownership group. A FO who traded away Suarez because it didn’t want to pay his modest salary of $15M per year. I’m sure you’ll know it’s not easy trying to 1) just get hitters to entertain coming on prove it/bounceback deals to generate more value in the worst hitters environment in MLB

Haha Fans love to hate on FO’s eh? Not just Mariners fans. 29 others across the Country! My theory is that game of MLB is better suited for fans to criticize moves or debate the running of a ML Roster w it’s daily in game decisions, the Fans have a right to complain about trades and prospect rankings. You’ll surely know not a single GM is w/o fault. You have every right to think you know what it takes to tear down a roster, learn how to DD&T under budget cuts over the course of the Orgs first ever complete roster rebuild.

The cost was also made higher in a market where practically half the League is within 4-5g of a WC Spot. It was always going to be, I hate to use this term since the cost of Suarez is always going to be what the market dictates, ….higher in a sellers market in other words a “slight overpay” in theory. Fact is it Geno is never going to cost less than what it cost the acquiring team pays to get him today.

That’s not completely true. They ruined lawlar and hes always hurt. So i don’t see that being a guarantee anymore. He will be in the minors again next year. Torey needs to go. They will have money and need to get veterans. I can easily see him coming back if Lawlar doesn’t play this year.

        • Spencer O'Gara

@Taker. Lawlar has a grand total of 56 MLB at bats. Go ahead and write him off if you want, but that’s about as small a sample size as one could imagine. As a reference point, Suarez’s first 53 at bats in Sedona Red, he hit .207 which then continued for quite a while. Proclaiming a bust based on about 2 weeks of full time play (but let’s not forget he hasn’t actually gotten to play full time at all yet…) is certainly a bold choice…. Honestly, if I were a team flush with young MLB starting pitching, I’d be calling Hazen today to see if I could snag Lawlar for one of them.

By all means hold your own opinion on Torey, but there’s no evidence to suggest he should be fired at all. Every player has nothing but excellent things to say about him. If you want to use team record, I think your ire should be directed at Hazen, Hall and Kendrick who actually provide Torey with the players.

Maybe the team ponies up for Suarez in the offseason, but I doubt it. They have basically no money to spend, despite what you seem to think. Even if we assume they spend at the same level they are in 2025 (highly unlikely given it is a lost year with a record high payroll led by a GM/Owner who’ve proven they don’t spend intelligently), there are arbitration raises in addition to contract raises for all the extensions signed in the last couple years. And there are at least 2, if not 3 or 4 rotation/depth spots that need filled before adding a 3B/DH to a team with an offensive core 25+ teams are jealous of. To say nothing of getting saddled with Suarez’s 2027 and beyond production…

Randy and Camilo – I’ve been praying for those 2 ever since I saw we kept all of our 8 Top 100 Prospects. H Ford is our best chip since he’s blocked from being everyday Catcher in SEA.

I heard Jeff Passan make an Interesting comment yesterday though. Re: trading for RPers If SEA covets a RP (or 2) like Jax or R R who are both under team control they have to factor in the potential work stoppage in 2027. He’s, Passan, hearing Owners across the League say they are willing to fall on their swords as they dig their heels in on a version of a Salary Cap. You may have seen how Bryce Harper feels about that topic. If you haven’t let’s just say this- he is in the opposing camp on Manfred and the Owners views on a Salary Cap! Quite the shouting match

If we get a work stoppage can Seattle afford to trade away premium talent for a RPer who’s under control 2027> when they might not get anything from the RPer in 2027. We’ll see….interesting subject

Did Dipoto also make your Farm System a Top 5 Farm in all of MLB twice in a 4 year span? Under a miserly owner?

He traded from the lower ceiling and very young aged prospects. After he acquired Naylor Suarez and Caleb Ferguson he still has 8 Top 100 prospects to play with, a choice between 2 expendable young SP’s with 6y control in L Evans and E Hancock. In fact all 8 prospects are ranked 71st or better in MLB Top 100 That is a fecundity of young top ranked talent to add to the already young controllable talent on the Big League Roster

If Dipoto could take back many of his smug and foolish comments to the media I wonder if he might gain more respect amongst fans. Not many GM’s could work under a cheap owner and survive a Roster teardown and rebuild like he did….

Emerson, Kade Anderson, Montes, Ford, Celestin, Farmelo, Cjintje, Sloan,

Cole Young and Williamson are still developing rookies. Bliss may be able to contribute

Nicky Becker, Yorger Bautista are in the long term bucket.

Nothing against Suarez, but Mariners still sucks. Hyperthetically, even adding Ohtani (which will never happen) will not help the Mariners make it to post-season.

By saying hyperthetically you indicate that Ohtani is absolutely coming to Seattle and the comment is not just imagining the scenario but a fact.

If Detroit stands pat and thinks we can go cheap and just promote some kids or rely on Cobb and Oquirdy then they’re not serious about a championship…. Illitch- you don’t want to be a big spending owner cause it didn’t work in the DD days, ok. Understandable. But you only have Tarik till the end of ’26. What are you waiting for? Our players besides Javy make nothing. But here we are. Please don’t blow this window. This currently is not a championship team. You think we could play LA with this team? Not hardly.

Hahahahaha! I love all the comments on here praising Suarez like he’s some kind of power hitting monster. He wasn’t good in Seattle and he made it clear he didn’t like it here after he went to Arizona. Then, not too long ago, when asked, he said he didn’t want to leave the Dbacks and hoped to resign with them.

The “power” will be gone as soon as he gets back in town and his attitude will suck. Bad move Dipoto. Bad move.

    Locklear will be a stud

You have a hard on for Locklear. He’s been in AAA for 2 years or more, and all the best M’s prospects usually make the jump from AA to the bigs. The PCL is notorious for inflating hitters’ stats. Seattle hasn’t even had to give up one of their 8 top100 prospects. They improved their lineup without a doubt and they need to try and win now.

No, I’m just sick of the constant rebuild. And no the PCL isn’t inflating anything. In fact, Cheney stadium is a hitters nightmare.

And no, they didn’t improve anything. Suarez was average at best when he was with Seattle before. Now, he’s going to be unhappy because he didn’t like being here before and now his numbers will drop this lowering his capital potential going into a walk year.

Also there’s been a giant black hole at 1B all season, and they preferred to keep trotting out Tellez or Solano or Dylan Moore rather than call Locklear up.

No…the PCL doesn’t “inflate stats” (whatever that means) and Cheney Stadium is one of the harder ones to hit at on the West Coast, but you probably already knew that right?

He was arguably the best first base prospect in AAA right now across all of the MLB. We (Mariners) will have a vacancy next year at first base. And Naylor won’t resign (no loss) and Raley isn’t a long term solution.

Not to mention Suarez actually sucks and is only doing as well as he is because he’s in a hitters park. The homers will disappear once he’s back in Seattle. Nevermind the fact that Suarez hates Seattle…

But yeah, let’s make it to the post season and get eliminated in the first round for the cost of our future…

The PCL has always been friendly to hitters. I’m not even worried about anything else you said about Cheney cause you’re flat wrong. Suarez didn’t suck the 2 years he played in Seattle. Still not one prospect gone from the top 100. You love Locklear a bit too much at this point. A ridiculous number of prospects rake at AAA then suck in the bigs. You are just guessing and hoping Locklear is good. How did they not upgrade 3rd? They had 5 hrs from 3b this year. Woulda been dumb not to upgrade now with this pitching. Waiting around and hoping for unproven prospect to produce seems dumb right now.

Yep. In fact, Williamson is a much better defender. But you’d rather have a couple of home runs, barely hit .200 and whiff a million times because he’s playing well in an offensive-minded stadium. Not to mention it’s a walk year for him so he has to actually try now.

Suarez is average at best. But I get it, you’re a Mariners fan and not too terribly bright.

This was a steep price. It’s easy to write the prospects off as nothing special, but Locklear is probably the best first base prospect in baseball right now, Cranton and Burgos are excellent relief prospects that just need a little more time in the minors.

This is a win-now move by Seattle, but it’s all for nothing if they don’t address the bigger needs.

They can’t stop now. They could be a dangerous team in the postseason if they get leverage reliever and a starter.

Agree they need a leverage reliever and a starter but I’m not worried about the prospect loss here. I dont think we will get much out of Miller this year. Need a depth SP and one more stopper.

Wouldnt be upset to see a OF too but Canzone is doing ok for the moment. LuBob would be awesome in RF and DH Canzone.

They could easily get all that done

I’ll love this if they get that leverage reliever and starter. If they don’t, I’ll probably hate it.

I have no problem with them pushing in the chips and legitimately trying to get to the World Series. I hate half-assery.

We saw that in 2022. They were so close. Instead of pushing in the chips, they hit the brakes. So, I’m cautiously optimistic right now. The next eight and a half hours will be telling.

This year’s market was always going to dictate a steep price for Naylor and Suarez. If the M’s wanted to participate in adding impact talent it had to be willing to let talent go. If you ask me I didn’t think it made much sense to make smaller or less impactful trades. They couldn’t afford to straddle between keeping so many prospects and being willing to pay the steep asking price. It had to be one or the other if they wanted to keep up with their AL Playoff hopeful Rivals.

I also think they believe they wont see many more seasons like this where each top AL team is somewhat flawed. Seasons like this where there is so much parity don’t come around each yr.

When you look at the price Seattle has paid collectively, it’s less than I anticipated (but still high).

I don’t have a problem with them pushing in the chips, I just want to see them go all the way and get those arms they need.

If this is it, and assuming it’s not enough to get even close to the World Series, I’ll be ticked. It makes no sense to me to get a couple of bats and ignore the biggest needs.

And here we are, 3 hours before the deadline, and other relievers are flying off the shelves. A few good ones are left, like Griffin Jax, so I’m hoping Jerry continues to go all in on this year. There are no great teams in the AL this year, just a lot of good ones. Meanwhile, one more starter might be a pipe dream at this point. If we get that reliever, I wonder if they’ll Dodger it and have occasional bullpen days instead of throwing Evans or Hancock out there. And hey, we haven’t had a Casey Lawrence or Jesse Hahn activation/DFA cycle for a while now.

I’m bullish on Henriquez. He was even in the HVH plan.

Something has to get done. It just doesn’t make sense to trade for three rentals and leave a couple of needs on the table.

Even a middle-innings reliever would be better than not adding anyone else.

The salary commitment taken on across both trades for 2025 is laughable. It’s absolutely absurd the FO salary dumped him in the first place to build an infield w spare parts. Even the Rays don’t behave like this unless they have prospects ready to step into the void.

GH-I see the Astros making a big splash today, they will end up either with Dylan Cease or Nolan Arenado. They are leaning toward Cease, but if they cannot agree to a deal with SD, I see them turning to St Louis for Arenado. Since the Yankees traded for McMahon, I think the Yankees are looking at more pitching especially starters.

As a mariner fan, I couldn’t be happier about this trade. All I want is for my team to compete and finally show a “all in” attitude, and this is it! Prospects are suspects and nothing more. There’s always a few who you hope your team doesn’t touch (for me it’s Ford, Emerson and Montes) but for the right deal and at the right time EVERYONE needs to be on the table. If this trade means the Mariners earn a playoff spot, then it’s a win. If they miss the playoffs, then I’m still glad the front office showed some life and tried. Just PLEASE resign at least one of Geno or Naylor this offseason lol
