Deadline day is here! The deadline is 5pm Central time, meaning there are less than 11 hours to go now. Here is a small selection of the many, many storylines we’ll be following today…
1. Miller time?
Less than two weeks ago, the Athletics were reportedly turning away Mason Miller suitors. Yesterday, there was a big narrative shift. The Yankees, Mets, Phillies and Padres were all connected to Miller in rumors. Then the A’s didn’t use Miller in a save situation last night. Manager Mark Kotsay said after the game that Miller was not available but not due to an injury, seemingly suggesting that the A’s held him back with the possibility of a trade being in the works. Will the A’s and some other club swing a blockbuster deal for Miller today?
2. Sandy in the hourglass:
It has been expected for a very long time that the Marlins would be trading starter Sandy Alcantara before tomorrow. However, his performance has made it more questionable. He has a 6.36 earned run average this year. His 45.6% ground ball rate is still good but not quite as strong as before. His 16.8% strikeout rate is well below his previous pace. Despite the struggles, several clubs are still interested, including the Astros, Red Sox, Mets and Padres. He’s signed through next year with a club option for 2027, so the Marlins could hold him if they don’t get an offer they like. Will they pull the trigger?
3. Padres have everything on the table:
The Padres have some clear needs but some notable limitations. The budget is tight and their prospect pool shallow. As such, there have been a lot of rumors suggesting they may move players from their big league roster, despite looking to strengthen the club for the stretch run. Perhaps they could move players like Dylan Cease or Robert Suarez while simultaneously trying to bring in guys like Miller, Alcantara or Jarren Duran. They haven’t yet made a trade in this deadline season but perhaps they could do several moves and significantly rearrange the deck chairs by the end of the day.
4. Pirate standoff:
The Pirates are clear sellers and it was reported over a month ago that they have very few untouchable players, with Andrew McCutchen and Paul Skenes reportedly the only guys who are off limits. They’ve already traded Ke’Bryan Hayes to the Reds, Caleb Ferguson to the Mariners and Adam Frazier to the Royals. There have been plenty of Mitch Keller rumors but the most recent reporting suggests he might end up staying. Could some other club pry him loose in the next few hours? Even if Keller stays, the Pirates could move Bryan Reynolds, Tommy Pham, Oneil Cruz, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Joey Bart, Bailey Falter, David Bednar, Dennis Santana and/or Taylor Rogers.
5. Guardians open for business?
The Guardians are just 2.5 games out of a playoff spot but have lost closer Emmanuel Clase to a gambling investigation. Perhaps the outlook is dire enough that they will sell. Reportedly, they are shopping outfielder Steven Kwan and starter Shane Bieber, a couple of very interesting additions to the market. Will either or both of them be sent out of Cleveland today?
6. Snakes alive, in the seller lane:
The Diamondbacks have been one of the most aggressive sellers this year. They’ve already flipped Josh Naylor and Eugenio Suárez, both to the Mariners, in addition to sending Randal Grichuk to the Royals. They still have several other impending free agents who should be available today. Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly are the headliners, but the Snakes also have Shelby Miller, Jalen Beeks and Kendall Graveman. Beeks and Miller are currently on the injured list but could still be traded. Arizona could also consider moving controllable guys such as Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Alek Thomas or Jake McCarthy.
7. Orioles flying the coop:
The Orioles are another club active in the seller lane. They have already traded Bryan Baker to the Rays, Gregory Soto to the Mets, Seranthony Domínguez to the Blue Jays, Ramón Urías to the Astros and Andrew Kittredge to the Cubs. They still have more work to do today. Ryan O’Hearn, Cedric Mullins, Charlie Morton, Zach Eflin and Tomoyuki Sugano are all impending free agents who should be on the move today. Ramón Laureano’s deal has a 2026 club option but he’s likely available as well.
8. The Robert staredown:
There has been some suggestion that the White Sox could hold Luis Robert Jr. past the deadline if they don’t get an offer they like. He is in the final guaranteed year of his contract but there are two club options for 2026 and 2027, each valued at $20MM with a $2MM buyout. Theoretically, they could trigger the first of those options and then try to trade Robert in the offseason or at next year’s deadline. However, that’s a risky stance to take. Robert has been hurt and/or underperforming for much of the past two years. There’s a decent chance he is injured or struggling again down the stretch, which will make it tough to justify spending an extra $18MM on him a few months from now. He’s actually been performing well in recent weeks, so the Sox should arguably cash him in now while he has a bit of momentum.
9. Twins splitting:
The Twins have leaned hard into sell mode. They were clearly going to be moving impending free agents but made a big splash yesterday by flipping Jhoan Durán, who is controllable through 2027, to the Phillies in exchange for prospects Eduardo Tait and Mick Abel. Will they move another controllable guy like Griffin Jax or Joe Ryan? Even if not, they should be shopping impending free agents Willi Castro, Danny Coulombe, Harrison Bader, Ty France and Christian Vázquez. They already traded Chris Paddack to the Tigers.

Ah yes, the endless refresh of this site continues for another year!!
Not sure why, but I see the Padres getting Mason Miller, and the Yankees trading for David Bednar. It remains to be seen.
Hoping for Bednar to Yankees as well.
according to the Bucs GM, a Bednar trade will require a top prospect and 2 major league ready players with several seasons of control
Gone are the days when other teams try to get over the Bucs on trades
Is it really that important to comment first lol
Yes it’s everything! Lol
Big – To those who seek the attention that comes with it, yes. LOL
First to reply to fever pitch guy!
Did I do it right?
In Section 6. Snakes alive, in the seller lane: “They’ve already flipped Josh Naylor and Eugenio Suárez, both to the Marlins,” Should read Mariners.
If those guys went to the Marlins that would be the weirdest trade in the history of the league.
Why do I have this feeling the twins won’t unload all their impending free agents for some reason?
Would just be a very Minnesota Twins thing for them to do
Naylor and Suarez went to the Mariners not Marlins.
Naylor and Suarez went to the Mariners, not the Marlins.
Mariners, Marlins, who cares, they’re both watching the playoffs from the comfort of their living room. Ahahahahahsha!
Naylor and Suarez to the Marlins? That would have been interesting.
Naylor, a former first round pick by the Marlins
It will be so funny if Robert jr doesn’t get traded again
Getz has no clue lol
The Tigers have until 6pm to make us fans NOT be disappointed. Paddock and Montero are an okay appetizer but I want a big steak for supper and a great dessert! RH bat…back end reliever…another good starter. Let’s go Harris!!!
With Suarez traded to the Mariners, and a couple good appearances by Ibanez, I don’t expect that RH bat. The need to replace at least 4 under performing bullpen arms still exists. There are still some elite bullpen arms available. Please, no more Montero trades. That type of improvement isn’t worth giving up prospects for. Move the Needle, Harris!
And how exactly would you pay for this feast???
Harris is playing it smart.
I would be happy if he could snag a couple more complementary pieces on the cheap.
Right now (there is all day today left) The Red Sox, White sox and Pirates appear to be the three dumbest teams.
I bet you believe your IQ is a high level, but from reading your comments, you just might be the dumbest person who posts here and there’s plenty of competition for that honor
Thanks to everyone who noticed the Mariners/Marlins typo. Clearly low on sleep over here. Haha.
You must be sleep-deprived, Darragh my guy.
You missed a chance to write “Thanks to all the guys who noticed the guys I called Marlins guys instead of Mariners guys. Thanks, guys.”
Yes, but at least today is a rest day. Nothing to worry about, maybe take in a little sun….
Darragh – I had assumed it was the lack of sleep! Really appreciate you guys doing a combined overnight to keep us informed, and I enjoy the humor in your subtitles.
Snakes Alive had me envision Samuel L. Jackson screaming “I have had it with these _____ snakes making us write all these _____ trade articles!”
And Split Twins had me envision Abby and Brittany Hensel looking like the T-1000 after a metal rod split it vertically in Terminator 2.
So thank you!
O’Hearn to Brewers, please!
Boston needs to go out and get a #2 or 3 starter and possibly a first baseman or another bullpen arm. They are in position to go on a run here the last 2 months.
I’m thinking the Red Sox will play Campbell at 1stbase…
Jays should be making at least 3 mores moves today, They could use a RH bench bat, another high leverage BP arm and mid rotation starter. It should turn out to be an interesting day!!!
The reds are making the weirdest moves
I think they make moves thinking that other moves will be made then sometimes those moves are not finalized. Littell was a great grab at that price ! And although it seems like a bit of overpay for Haynes – they need an upgrade on defense and he has the metrics for his bat to recover somewhat. Not hating that move IF they add another bat. A power bat would be nice but Rich Homie Kwan seems like who they are targeting due to his elite fielding and reds need to improve defense
Meanwhile in Denver, the Rockies GM is trying to get both Mitch Keller and Mason Miller, but ends up with an LP of Mitch Miller’s Greatest Hits.
Yes, Dylan and Ray Charles both cited “Yellow Rose of Texas as a prime influence. And the influence of that Conductor gesture onNureyev is unmistakable.
With the exception of trading Lombard, Jr., Lagrange, and Jones, Yankees should be all-in on Miller. Devin Williams won’t be able to leave NY fast enough once the Season ends. Watched him blow a save last night and he had the same shell-shocked, terrified look that Clay Holmes used to have. Pretty certain Weaver isn’t the answer for the closer’s role, but he could be an adequate eighth inning guy.
Have you seen the prices on relievers? I don’t think you can take your premium prospects off the table and be “all in” on Miller. He still has 4 years of control beyond this year.
A Mason trade would most likely have to include a very top prospect or two. And if they are actually listening to offers, there’ll be more teams than just the Yankee’s top prospects on the table.
With the Mets, Phillies and Padres all checking in on Robert over the last week and seeing the prices for rentals the last few days, I think Getz surprises everyone today and pulls a top 10 prospect out of a contender for him. Best guess is he gets the Mets to move Sproat and a lesser prospect (15-30 range).
denny816:
It’s not the prices for rentals that have gone up, it’s the price is for rental pitching. Suarez did not get an amazing return last night and he has actually had a very good year. There’s no way the Mets are trading Sproat for Robert. There’s so many reasons why I don’t believe that will happen. But at the end of the day, remember that Robert is a guy who has underperformed, had several injury issues, is basically a rental unless you want to pick up $20 million on him next year. How does that net a prospect that high? The guys who have been traded for a lot are relievers who have been performing well. Totally different market.
That would be the first time Getz got anything back worth while.
Having traded Nestor (injured) and Caleb Durbin (2B/3B 2.2 BWAR) to get a closer in Devin Williams…..the Yankees needed to trade for another Caleb Durbin, and…now another Closer? Mason Miller? Kudo’s to Cashman. Thursday is a “OMG, why???” day.
Yankees always target elite bullpen arms. Great business model too !
Cmon Dombo…. Get us a bat!
Yankees have one big move in them today for controllable pitching. The Pirates stance on ‘oh, we’ll just hang onto Keller’ sounds a lot like a call for the best offers from interested clubs. He doesn’t fit their timeline and is making too much money for Nutting to hang onto him. Plus, he’s got a high end rotation of young guys that don’t cost anything.
Nutting was against trading Keller which is why he isn’t going anywhere
With 3.5 years of control, maybe the Bucs would be better off hanging on to Keller? What is Pittsburg looking for as far as a trade?
Bats.
Ok, then the Yankees are definitely out on Keller. Dominguez, Lombard, Jones, and Arias are all staying most likely. Pitchers Hess/Cunningham, Selvidge, Lalane and Carr are available via trade.
bats with several years of control
Today not only big for your team but for those that are in fantasy baseball leagues as well. Lots of implications, particularly with all the closers.
Am I the only one that found the return on Suarez to be a little light? I’m surprised Arizona didn’t get more for him.
Makes me wonder if other interested teams had moved on
BrianCashmansBurner:
I think people are looking at the market for the relief pitchers and what teams are getting for them and trying to correlate that to the position players. I think rental pitching is going to get more value than rental position players. I think that’s part of why the return for Suarez seems underwhelming.
That’s not it. No one else was willing to part with what Arizona wanted
Big whiffa:
You’re saying the exact same thing I am. If no one is willing to part with what they want that means the market isn’t hot. Not hot like the relief pitching market.
Jut a few notes about the Pirates.
1) Why is McCutchen off limits? Does he have a no trade clause or is his value as a veteran make it so getting so little in return makes no sense?
2) I know there will be mandatory trade rumors about Skenes pretty much as long as he remains in Pittsburgh, But has there ever been a comparable trade in MLB history? Factoring in his age, service time, talent, and experience and I’m having trouble thinking of a trade package that would make realistically sense for the Pirates.
Cutch is off limits because he has stated that he would retire if traded
He returned 3 years ago over a conversation the owner had with him, offering Cutch a contract
Skenes isn’t going anywhere either and that’s also on the orders of Nutting
Re: #2 To my knowledge, no comparable trade in MLB history. Most people point toward the NFL and the Hershel Walker trade for a comp.
I came here only for the trade rumors. I don’t want to know about any actual trades.
The Yankees really need another starter. I definitely favor Alcantara or Gallen over Cease. I wouldn’t trade Cease away, if I was the Friars, especially if they get Mason Miller as expected. We’ll see.
Phillies… Kwan, Laureano, Bader in that order I think should be the OF targets. I don’t think they move a remaining Top- prospect in any trade tho. There isn’t a top-flight guy available that you break the bank on.
I don’t think they land Kwan, also he is a lefty. I think they come away with one of the righty bats tho.
What do you think they’d want for kwan
My wish for Philly: Kepler and a decent prospect, plus cash to Angels for Ward. I know that might be a pipe dream as Angels have stated that they aren’t in sell mode. But they do need a RH outfield bat….. which means that either Kepler / Marsh need to move out. It is clear that Kepler is not happy. He definitely won’t be happy platooning the rest of the year if they acquire a RH bat. And I know no one should care about his feelings. But the locker room is important and you want guys happy. Kepler seems like a good guy… it’s just not working out here. Kwan will take too much to give up and he’s a lefty. That isn’t happening. Bader and Laureano would be fine, again, as long as Kepler is moved. Happy with the relief upgrades over the past couple of weeks. I think Dombrowski has put the team in a good position for this year and next year. Have to sign Schwarber….. need a bridge contract with Realmuto now. Castellanos gets moved before next year. Suarez leaves in free agency, along with Romano and Kepler. Avarado – need to see how he performs the rest of the season.. Painter and Crawford on the team…
The McCutchen situation is about sentiment. As a Pirates’ fan, there isn’t a lot to hang on to and a bit of nostalgia doesn’t hurt. That and he’s on one year deals and has openly said he wants to end his career in Pgh. Trading him would likely result in his retirement so there is no point to a trade for either side.
POLL IDEA
Keep track of your refreshes today
Let’s ask the community how many times they refreshed their pages today hoping for a story to drop.
If Cherington can’t land a near-ready bat today, he’s gone. Probably should be gone anyway, but he’s got 8.5 hours to save himself. Cannot believe they’re not moving Keller – his value will never be higher. If he implodes again in Aug/Sept, it will be a huge missed opportunity.
I’m starting a support group for Red Sox fans affected by the “DURAN TO PHILLIES” phone notification they woke up to
Miller to the Cubs for Alcantara and Wiggins
As a Dodgers fan I’ll have to wait for the last 30 minutes to see if they pull off a significant trade.
They seem to wait until all the buyers are done and then make deals with the pressure of the deadline on the seller.
We’ll see how it goes. But I think they are in a decent position even without a major trade, considering all the injured players coming back soon.
But I would love to see them make a move just so mickey can blow a gasket lol.
