Mets Acquire Tyler Rogers

By Darragh McDonald | July 30, 2025 at 5:25pm CDT

The Mets have acquired right-hander Tyler Rogers from the Giants, according to announcements from both clubs. In return, the Giants receive right-hander José Buttó, pitching prospect Blade Tidwell and outfield prospect Drew Gilbert. The Giants designated right-hander Sean Hjelle for assignment in order to open a 40-man spot. Gilbert wasn’t on the Mets’ 40-man and won’t require a spot today. Both of the Rogers twins have been traded today, as the lefty Taylor was in the Ke’Bryan Hayes trade.

Tyler, the submarining righty, will be joining a new club for the first time in his career. He was drafted by the Giants back in 2013 and has spent his entire career with that franchise up until now. He doesn’t throw especially hard, averaging just 83.1 miles per hour on his fastball during his career. But he has nonetheless found success thanks to his unusual delivery, mixing in a sinker and a slider with his four-seamer.

Perhaps because he isn’t a fireballer, Rogers is remarkably durable. He has never been on the major league injured list. From his debut in August of 2019 to the present, he has appeared in 392 big league games. That’s the most in the majors in that span.

The quantity is great but the quality is also impressive. Rogers has a 2.79 earned run average in his 396 2/3 innings. His 18.2% strikeout rate is subpar but his 4.6% walk rate and 56.5% ground ball rate are both excellent figures. This year, he’s been even better than before. He has a 1.80 ERA this season, along with a 20.2% strikeout rate, 2.1% walk rate and 64.4% grounder rate. He induces heaps of weak contact, as shown by his blood-red Statcast page. His average exit velocity, barrel rate and hard hit rate are all at least in the 94th percentile of qualified pitchers. He is making a $5.25MM salary this year, his final year of arbitration. He’ll be a free agent at season’s end.

The total package is understandably appealing to the Mets. Their bullpen has been ravaged by injuries this year. Since the season started, they have lost A.J. Minter, Danny Young, Dedniel Núñez, and Max Kranick to season-ending injuries. The bullpen has been a clear priority for them at this deadline. They have already added Gregory Soto and now Rogers gives them another fresh arm. Given all those injuries, Rogers’ durability is surely an attractive feature.

The money is also notable, with Rogers owed less than $1.75MM at this point of the calendar. The Mets are a third-time payor of the competitive balance tax and are above the top threshold, meaning they face a 110% tax on any spending they add to the ledger this week. Some veteran relievers such as Raisel Iglesias or Kenley Jansen are making eight-figure salaries, so the price point on Rogers is a softer hit for the Mets.

To get the player they wanted, it feels like they have given up a lot. Tidwell, 24, was a second-round pick of the Mets in 2022. Since then, he has generally been ranked as one of the club’s top ten prospects. His results since getting up to Triple-A haven’t been astounding. He has a 5.05 ERA in 164 innings at the top minor league level. He’s been a bit better there this year, with a 4.10 ERA, 25.7% strikeout rate and 9.5% walk rate.

Baseball America currently lists Tidwell as the Mets’ #10 prospect. They give him a 50 grade on the 20-80 scale and classify him as high risk. Their report notes that he’ll need to improve his control get become a back-end starter. A month ago, FanGraphs ranked him #7 in the system but with a 45+ grade, noting that he could develop into a mid-rotation guy but with some reliever risk thanks to his control issues and high-effort delivery.

Gilbert, 24, was a first-round pick of the Astros in 2022 but came to the Mets in the August 2023 trade which sent Justin Verlander back to Houston. Gilbert’s stock has dipped a bit since that trade. He missed a decent chunk of 2024 due to a hamstring injury and slashed .205/.313/.371 when he was on the field. This year, he’s been better, with a .246/.349/.435 line and 105 wRC+ in his Triple-A action.

BA ranks him #14 in the Mets’ system, also with a 50 grade and high risk. FanGraphs puts him at #10 with a 45 grade. The latter outlet notes he mostly does damage against fastballs but struggles against spin. He can play all three outfield spots but evaluators generally think it’s a bit of a stretch to have him in center. FanGraphs describes him as a “low-variance fourth outfielder.” He is going to be eligible for the Rule 5 draft in December, meaning he’ll need a 40-man roster spot before then.

Buttó can plug directly into the San Francisco bullpen to replace Rogers. He has thrown 167 big league innings with a 3.45 ERA, 23.5% strikeout rate, 12.2% walk rate and 43.9% ground ball rate. He is out of options and some of this year’s trend lines aren’t good. His strikeout rate was 26.9% last year but has dipped to just 20.7% this season, while his walk rate has stayed high at 11.1%. Perhaps he was going to get squeezed off the Mets’ roster as part of their deadline moves regardless.

Though it might come across a lot to give up for a soft-tossing rental, the Mets may not have had Gilbert or Buttó in their long-term plans. As mentioned, Gilbert was going to need a 40-man spot in a few months’ time. If the Mets view him as a future Quad-A outfielder and not an everyday regular, perhaps they could find another use for that roster spot. Buttó is out of options and might have been trending towards being designated for assignment.

For the Giants, there’s undoubtedly a lot to like in this haul. They hovered in the playoff race for a lot of the year but have been cold lately and are now five games back of a playoff spot. It was reported earlier that they would be listening to offers on their relievers. Rogers, as mentioned, is a 34-year-old impending free agent.

The Giants have swapped him out for Buttó. That makes their bullpen worse today but Rogers was on his way out the door anyway and perhaps they can find a way to get Buttó back on track. With Tidwell, they add some immediate rotation depth, something which has been an issue this year.

They have Logan Webb and Robbie Ray as a strong one-two but question marks after. They flipped Kyle Harrison and Jordan Hicks to the Red Sox in the Rafael Devers deal. Verlander is an impending free agent. Landen Roupp is currently shelved with elbow inflammation. Hayden Birdsong had some encouraging results earlier in the year but recently struggled enough to get sent down to Triple-A. The club will likely look for more starting pitching in the offseason but Tidwell can jump into that depth mix alongside guys like Roupp, Birdsong, Trevor McDonald, Mason Black and others.

Gilbert gives them some extra outfield depth. They will go into 2026 with Heliot Ramos and Jung Hoo Lee in two spots, but Mike Yastrzemski is an impending free agent. Guys like Luis Matos, Wade Meckler, Grant McCray, Marco Luciano and Daniel Johnson are on the 40-man roster. Assuming Gilbert gets a roster spot this fall, he’ll jump into that mix.

If Tidwell becomes a mid-rotation guy or Gilbert develops into an everyday outfielder, perhaps the Mets will feel they overpaid. But there are some reasons to expect those things might not come to pass, so it seems they felt it was a risk worth taking in order to get Rogers and upgrade their bullpen for the stretch run and postseason. Relievers tend to become more important in the playoffs, when off-days allow the top guys to pitch almost every game.

This could be the first of a handful of sell-side moves the Giants make. Verlander is an impending free agent, though he has a full no-trade clause and 4.53 ERA, which could complicate talks. Yastrzemski and Wilmer Flores are impending free agents as well. Camilo Doval still has a couple of years of club control but could be on the move as well.

Hjelle, 28, is known for his height and ability to induce ground balls. Listed at 6’11”, he has 149 2/3 big league innings under his belt with a 5.11 ERA, 21.8% strikeout rate, 6.6% walk rate and 56% ground ball rate. His numbers have trended in the wrong direction this year, with a 15.1% strikeout rate and 42.3% grounder rate. That’s a small sample of 15 innings, as he’s mostly been in the minors this year. In his 40 1/3 Triple-A innings this season, he has a 2.90 ERA, 26.2% strikeout rate, 6% walk rate and 51.9% ground ball rate.

The Giants could try to find a trade partner for Hjelle in the next 24 hours. If not, he’ll have to go on waivers. He can be optioned for the rest of this year and could perhaps appeal to clubs looking for pitching depth, though he’ll be out of options next year.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic first reported that Taylor was headed to the Mets. Robert Murray of FanSided first reported that Tidwell and Gilbert would be part of the three-player return. Joel Sherman of The New York Post was first on Buttó’s inclusion.

Not really. It’s okay for a rental but only Butto is assured of helping SF. Gilbert has a little pop but his value is in his CF defense. Tidwell is a lottery ticket.

Gilbert’s CF defense isn’t even that highly rated. Scouts don’t consider him an every day player there. They tab him for a corner OF f his HR power improves, or a 4th OF if it does not. For the record, he’s improved in both areas this season. But for now…..

He’s not a “project.” Unless by “project” you mean he needs to get his head out of the clouds and throw strikes. Doesn’t cover first base, walks way too many batters, pitch clock violations, and oh those pesky pitch com malfunctions.

Overpay is an understatement, another crap deal by the Mets! A 34-year-old rental; what a joke.
          Giants fleece the Mets again.

Even if Gilbert could be considered serviceable, he is better than any CF on the roster now. But now there is no hope in the minors.

As a long time Mets fan, I can only root for them to lose now; something has to change, lose the rest of the way out and get rid of the management.

The management may change but the clown show stays the same!

WS is a joke; this team as a Mets fan it’s not going to happen; that’s why we wanted to keep our prospects. Mets have the 4rth worst average with RISP and only .004 percentage points from the worst.

Scored 0 runs today and 1 run yesterday in being swept by the Padres.
No way this plays in the playoffs; take it to the bank this team is getting blown out early!

They can sign all the Bullpen pieces they want; you have to score to win.

Thats the loser; wait and see!

nonsense. the missing link is that the mets needed strong relievers and they now have them. before these 3 major improvements they had a relief corp that took took their turn giving up runs one after another. .

It sounds like a lot. But it might not be.
Tidwell is now about 5th behind, McLean, Sproat, Tong, and don’t forget Christian Scott.on the SP prospect depth chart And he is still just a project. One that might run out of options before he actually sticks as a major leaguer here.
Gilbert has been hyped more by the NY press (and fans) than by the scouts and analysts wove mostly pegged him as a starting corner – if he improves his HR power – or a 4th OF if he does not. Plus Benge is providing more offense and better defense than Gilbert did in A+ and AA. And Morabito is also performing well as a fallback.
High price or not, they were expendable.

The Giants replaced Rogers with Butto who had a 2.55 ERA in ’24 and has 5 years of team control and added Tidwell and Gilbert.

I guess the Mets figure they don’t have room on the 40 man for Gilbert and believe he will get selected in the rule 5 draft. He is a nice throw in to a Tidwell and Butto for Rogers trade.

I think there was some glad handing in this deal, Posey says, “I owe you one down the road,” sort of deal.

Because Tidwell is a completely expendable spare part. He’s been erratic and mediocre in AAA, even after a full year there,
What, exactly, do you think Tidwell is? And where does he fit into the Mets future behind SPs Scott, McLean, Sproat, and Tong?

I think he is a second round pick out of the SEC with a 10.9 K/9 ratio in AA in ’24 and a 9.9 K/9 ratio in AAA in ’25. I think he is a pitcher with a four seamer that sits 96 mph. Needs to improve his sinker and his changeup. Doesnt have a great breaking ball. At the worst he has the makings of a good bullpen arm.

Butto is going to be real good, could be in the rotation one day. Sits 95 mph, has a good slider and a plus sweeper and has a good changeup. If he can improve his sinker he will be real good.

Both are potentially rotation pieces and at the worst good bullpen arms.

Tidwell and Butto are expendable with the Mets depth as is Gilbert but its a lot to give up.

Mets overpayed for a top flight reliever that wasnt once rumored to be on the market from my recollection, I could be wrong. They went out and got their guy and paid up, good trade.

Well, you didn’t see that here, so rest easy. Gilbert is not a Mets top 5 prospect. Benge, Sproat, McLean, Tong, and Jett Williams are all easily ahead of Gilbert. Then you have guys like Ryan Clifford. MLB pipeline’s new list has Gilbert as the Mets #12 prospect. Tidwell is #10.

Remember – when one judges a trade, the initial take is based upon the potential returns of that same package for other players at the current prospect values.

Down the road it is a different equation. But it seems to me that at the current prospect trade values for that group, one could have managed to get a substantially more impactful return right now. In a year, who knows but at this moment in time? Gotta’ think so.

He’s only been very good in AAA for a month now, and solid for the previous month.
          1) Don’t overstate the value of a track record at AA and below. Especially when that is followed by
          2) struggling in AAA for several months before finding the stride – He struggled for two months after his return from the injury last year, and again for two months this year.
And even in AA, his ability to be a starter was questioned by the scouts: his HR power was light for a corner, and his CF defense was not good enough to start there.

Huge potential lol Tidwell has been dropping on every list and is now considered most likely a middle reliever or a AAAA starter he’s Mets 6th best pitching prospect though admittedly I’m counting Christian Scott who graduated from the list. He has 1 major league caliber pitch, his fastball. Gilbert has average MLB OF ceiling with 20HR possibly if all goes right.

Nonetheless, SF could conceivably have a rotation with:

Both very expendable. The Mets have 5 MLB starters returning next year, and four SP prospects who are/will be ahead of Tidwell on the depth chart (C. Scott, Sproat, McLean, and Tong). Plus Tidwell looks nowhere near MLB ready, and by March will have used 2 of is 3 options.
When, where, and in what capacity was he going to make it with the Mets?
Nimmo and Soto are here long term, and Benge has surpassed Gilbert as the team’s best OF prospect.

The best relievers in baseball give up runs. Your perception is anecdotal, and is skewed by the fact that the Giant’s hitters have been pi$$ poor at scoring runs. Plenty of pitchers give up runs without the team losing.

Rogers has made 53 appearances, and the Giants won 33 of them. That’s a .623 winning percentage. In the losses the team averaged 2.55 runs per game. The Giants would have won more of those games had the hitters been able to score more than that pitiful average of 2.55 runs per game.

Exactly. Yes, Tyler Rogers has given up six runs in his three losses. That’s kind of how losses happen. In his FIFTY other appearances, he’s given up…four ER, four BB, and struck out 37.

As a Cubs fan, I’m incredibly jealous. If the Mets are ahead after 7, it’s essentially game over.

It is the NY press and fans that have hyped him into something more. Plus Benge, a better prospect, is coming up fast and could leapfrog Gilbert by mid-’26 anyway.

“Perhaps because he isn’t a fireballer, Rogers is remarkably durable. He has never been on the major league injured list. From his debut in August of 2019 to the present, he has appeared in 392 big league games. That’s the most in the majors in that span.”

There are no long relievers anymore. Butto is now a “bulk” reliever, which means he can consistently give you two innings. And he hasn’t gone any longer than that at all this year. Anyone who goes longer in relief is typically a starter who is “piggybacking”. And the Mets have 3 SP prospects who can be used in that capacity next year.

Good trade for the Mets. They’re in it to win it and sorely need to upgrade the bullpen. It wouldn’t surprise me if they add two more relievers. A lefty like Danny Coulombe would be a great fit. Then a power arm to set up for Diaz.

Good trade for both teams. Giants only make the playoffs if they hit, so Butto is a fine replacement for 30 innings of Rogers. Then they got two near mlb prospects which could be good for a guy expiring contract.

And the Mets got a pure gamer who has been as consistent as anyone so that they can make a real run at a ring this year. This is how trades should be

Scouts are not sold on Gilbert as a starting OF. The NY press got too excited too early and oversold him and the fan base ate it up.

I’m not talking about how they are rated. I’m referring to where they are in their development now. Scott has seem some success in the majors. McLean is the only SP recently who has adjusted to AAA immediately. Sproat struggled for a while in AAA, and has found success there recently. Tong is still in AA.
Next year, the picture could change and tong could surpass others. But right now, this is where they are.
Fans get too carried away with and place too much emphasis on rankings. Those only rank the player’s tools, and his eventual ceiling. Not his timeline.

The rank is also the current projections on what they’d do at higher levels. Just because a prospect has held their own in a few starts (Scott) doesn’t mean they’re necessarily better equipped to succeed at the highest level. It means they got the opportunity.

First, the rank is not on what they will do – its only on what their ceiling is.
But none of that is the point. I listed the players by where they are in the hierarchy. Right now, the Mets have a full rotation. As of this moment, the order that I’ve listed them speaks to where [I believe] they will be come spring training.
I know that has noting to do with where they end up 2 or 3 or 6 years from now. Heck, it could even change during ST. But thats just where things stand now. How they are ranked on some pundits’ numerical list is not the point, and has no bearing on what is now.

Most (not elite) prospects never amount to anything. Rogers is getting better results than most of the big name relievers on the market. Those big name relievers would cost Mets top prospects. No top prospects moved in this trade. No top 100. No top 150. Nothing substantial. I’m not ready to give up
      Sproat
      Tong
      McLean
      Benge

Great move by the Mets. Tyler Rogers may not light up the radar gun, but he’s one of the most effective relievers in baseball this year, sub2.00 ERA, elite control, and almost zero hard contact. His funky submarine delivery gives the bullpen a totally different look and makes him a perfect bridge to Díaz imo

Advanced metrics love him (low xwOBA, top-tier first-strike rate), and old-school guys will appreciate how consistent and durable he is, already over 50 appearances this season with each year before producing consistent numbers.

His salary is super reasonable too, $5.25M for 2025, and he’s a free agent after the season. That makes him a low-risk rental with serious upside, especially for a team needing reliable late-inning arms. Don’t think the Mets will have to give up too much.

This is a smart blend of analytics and baseball sense. Solid pickup imo

Who has even a moderate understanding of the 40 man roster come Rule 5 time in December?
        You can only protect 40.

Mets would have been better off getting a decent starter ( for example, Andrew Heaney or someone like that) and moving Clay Holmes to the bullpen for the rest of the year to monitor his innings Then return Holmes to a starter again next year. San Francisco Giants fans have stated that Rogers has lost a bunch of games by letting inherited runners score, but that’s not in his numbers that people are looking at.

@ mattwild The NY press actually overhyped Gilbert when the Mets acquired him. As recently as this past spring, the scouting reports were still projecting his ceiling as starting corner OF, or 4th OF, depending on whether his HR power improves. His CF defense was said to be adequate in a pinch, but not for regular use there.
That said, he’s improved a lot over these past two months, and has been swinging a very hot bat since the tail end of June. (he’s hit 14 HRs on the year, but 10 of them have come in June/July). He is eligible for Rule 5 after this year, so the Giants will likely need to protect him to be safe.

Big Titty is going to be a pretty good starter or potential closer. He throws gas. Butto was just overworked, but generally decent. Gilbert is probably a fourth OF, but he’s still young and he might thrive in a new environment. It’s his third team already, so that usually says something.

The Mets are getting one of the best relievers in baseball, which they need desperately, so despite what sure looks like an overpay, I’m not all that worked up about this one. Gilbert is the one risk — hopefully Gilbert doesn’t develop into a real quality major leaguer while Rogers departs at the end of 2025. I’m honestly fine with everything else. Blade Tidwell does not look like he has much upside, he reminded me of the 2024 version of Adrian Houser in his few starts at the big league level so far. Butto, he’s a thrower and not a pitcher. I think the Mets could realistically win this trade despite how lopsided it looks on the face of it.

Not even close. That Mets team was a few games over .500 It was so porous, even after getting Lindor that year, that they had to go out and sign 3 more starting position players, plus Scherzer the following off season. This team went to the LCS last year, and is leading the division now. And Defensively, Gilbert couldn’t even caddy for PCA in CF.

I think it would take Tong or McLean plus others to get Miller. He’s under control until 2030 so it would take a massive package to get him. Sounds like Rooker isn’t on the block.

Looks like this one came together all of a sudden. Gilbert played today in a game that ended less than an hour before this deal was reported.

Mets overpaid but I love Tyler Rogers. Those guys didn’t have a spot on the team. Rogers is a big addition

If the return is good, demand was
high. No surprise there if he was made available. Tyler has an attribute that not many relievers have. Consistent as they come. Even when he gives up a few, it’s generally on the back of infield squibbers. Enjoy Mets. You can feel good when Tyler is walking out there.

Of all the possible extensions the Giants could’ve given out at season’s end, this was the one I was most hopeful for. I’d rather send Doval or Walker any day over Rodgers.

L:et’s not overstate it, Brett…. Gilbert started hitting in early June and has been on fire these past five weeks. Too soon to say if he’s figured it out for good, or if this is just another streak. But dismissing him completely is unwarranted.

He hits fastballs well, is what I am reading.
Breaking pitches are problematic. I like the player, but I am not sure how well he plays in the mlb
        PCA
        Corbin Carroll.
        He’s not them.
        Jake McCarthy?
        Alek Thomas?

He’s definitely useful for SF. He’s a gamer.
I don’t hate him. He was acquired by the previous GM. Stearns drafted Benge. Benge is incredible so far.

Mets got an elite reliever. The arm angle is a benefit to the entire bullpen. Ridiculously low walk rate. Ridiculously no IL stints ever.
        Tyler Rogers is elite.
Buster got some talent for him.

What gets me reading some of these comments saying the Mets gave up too much for Rogers but think that Rogers just might get you over the hump into the playoffs. A WS trophy shines longer than a prospect that maybe 3 or 4 years away. I thought the Mets fans wanted a playoff team this year instead of a prospect.

WS this team as a Mets fan is not going to happen; that’s why we wanted to keep our prospects. Mets have the 4rth worst average with RISP and only .004 percentage points from the worst.

Scored 0 runs today and 1 run yesterday in being swept by the Padres.
No way this plays in the playoffs; take it to the bank this team is getting blown out early!

I know a lot of people are thinking this is an overpay, but have you noticed what other teams have had to trade for a quality player….even a pending free agent.

Rogers is going to solidify the bullpen for the rest of the season and maybe future years if resigned.

The cost: Butto…has been very erratic this season and probably would have been sent to AAA if not traded
Tidwell…. Probably number 5 or more on the depth chart for starting pitchers, not including the 17 pitchers drafted this year
Gilbert….the main piece…starting to pick it up in AAA….but again probably 3rd on depth chart for CF. Good player but expendable.

Have to give something to get something. Looks like a fair trade for both sides.

    Fair win win trade

Mets got Taylor having strong year. Didn’t give up anything too high ceiling but not a bargain either. Giants did well for rental. Gilbert seems to be a average RF floor. Tidwell could make a better reliever than starter. Mets can replace those prospects so I like trade for them but fair all around.

Could be. Usually win win is just a team paid the market going rate. But NY got their man without giving up anything to cry over and Giants got prospects but also a MLB reliever so they can keep trying to contend. Rays did that with catcher. I really like the trade rentals replace them. More teams should do it.

Trades generally been fair so far. Really liked getting rid of bad back Hayes for Pirates though. Nothing too crazy though. If Padres want someone though AJ won’t be denied. Philly can get a bit crazy.

Mets got fleeced..Taylor’s FIP is not sustainable and unless they address CF before the end of the deadline, this team won’t win in the playoffs.

It was Tyler they acquired, not Taylor.

And it’s not like his FIP is 100-150 points below the mean. It might rise a little, but that’s not a red flag.

I understand the deal and I understand all of the Mets players/prospects included were underperforming and it’s how deadline deals are done. That said, this feels like a little heavy for an old reliever on an expiring contract. I would have liked to see a minor piece going to Queens or a lesser piece in lieu of Gilbert or Tidwell.

This trade is fine. When you’re a contender trading at the dealine you’re going to pay a premium for the pieces you need. A fair trade earlier in the year might have been just Buttò or Buttò and 1 of the prospects for Rogers but the urgency of the deadline gives a seller more leverage.

The Giants don’t need a set-up man if they can’t score enough runs to ever be ahead in the 8th inning, so getting something for a player they’ll lose as a free agent at the end of the season anyway is a win.

It sounds like the two minor leaguers aren’t that highly regarded, so maybe they didn’t give up that much. Some projects for the Giants-maybe they workout. I’m just surprised the Mets surrendered a good reliever to obtain another. It seems counter-productive, but then again I don’t know much about Buttò.

I don’t think the Mets were fleeced in the Darin Ruf trade either. They valued Ruf’s strengths as a part-time player, and it cost them some minor league players, none of whom has done much for the Giants. Seymour has not been up long. He might be good. Zwack was struggling in AA, then was injured. I believe Szapucki is gone from the organization. J.D. Davis seemed like just a throw-in. Who knew Ruf would underperform + Davis would provide the Giants with value-until they added Chapman ?
