Rangers, Tigers Interested In David Bednar

By Nick Deeds | July 29, 2025 at 10:00am CDT

With this year’s trade deadline just a matter of days away, the Pirates could be one of the more active sellers over the next few days. According to a report from Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Pirates GM Ben Cherington is “looking to sell high” on closer David Bednar as he fields inquiries from multiple contenders regarding the 30-year-old. The Yankees, Dodgers, Phillies, and Cubs have all previously been connected to Bednar this summer. Hiles reiterates the Phillies’ interest in the righty and adds two additional suitors to the pile: the Rangers and the Tigers. What’s more, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports this morning that Pittsburgh has discussed the possibility of a deal with the Blue Jays that would send a reliever to Toronto, although it’s unclear whether that relief arm would be Bednar or another piece like Dennis Santana.

It’s hardly a shock that any of these newly-reported clubs would be interested in Bednar’s services. The two-time All-Star has been one of the league’s best closers for years now. Dating back to the 2021 season, Bednar has a 3.01 ERA and 101 saves in 275 1/3 innings of work. He’s struck out 29.4% of his opponents and has a 2.94 FIP. Those are already very impressive numbers, but they become all the more significant when one considers that Bednar struggled badly last year with a 5.77 ERA and 4.80 FIP across 62 appearances.

That his overall numbers remain that strong despite his brutal 2024 shows how utterly dominant Bednar has been the rest of the time, and 2025 is no exception. This year, he’s pitched to a 2.37 ERA with 17 saves and a 33.1% strikeout rate to go with a 1.96 FIP in 38 innings of work. He surrendered his first run since May 23 during last night’s save against the Giants and sports an eye-popping 1.70 ERA and 1.47 FIP dating back to April 19. That’s the day Bednar returned to the majors after three rough outings in Pittsburgh’s first four games of the season convinced the Pirates to option him to Triple-A for the reset. To say that reset has worked out would be an understatement, as Bednar’s elite play since his return has made him perhaps the club’s most valuable trade chip this summer.

Bednar’s value has risen enough that Hiles writes the Pirates are asking potential suitors to include one prospect within their organization’s top five in the return package for his services. The Pirates are known to be targeting upper-level hitting prospects and big league ready offensive talent this summer as they look to build a stronger position player corps to support Paul Skenes and the rest of their vaunted pitching core in 2026 and beyond. That makes some clubs a difficult fit for the Pirates’ needs. The Rangers, for example, surely wouldn’t consider parting with top prospect Sebastian Walcott in this sort of deal but have few other highly-rated, upper-level positional prospects in their system. Likewise, six of the Blue Jays’ top seven prospects according to MLB Pipeline are pitchers. By contrast, teams like the Tigers, Cubs, and Dodgers have a bevy of positional talent, some of which is in Double- and Triple-A already, from which they could deal if so inclined.

A club not being a perfect fit for the Pirates’s preferred return doesn’t necessarily mean a deal can’t be made as long as the buying club is sufficiently motivated, however. The Rangers seem like a particularly strong fit for Bednar. They enter trade season pressed up against the luxury tax with minimal room to take on salary barring a sudden change of heart from ownership, and taking on the final two months of Bednar’s $5.9MM salary for the season would be an extremely light financial burden for a player of Bednar’s caliber. Additionally, their recent struggles with putting together a quality bullpen could make someone controlled beyond the 2025 season like Bednar (who will reach free agency after 2026) an especially attractive option.

Speculatively speaking, perhaps there’s a deal to be made between the Rangers and Pirates involving a big league hitter like Adolis Garcia supported by lower-level prospects from Texas’s system. Likewise, the Blue Jays have a number of young position players who have graduated from prospect status who they could consider trading in the right deal, whether that’s for Bednar or another reliever like Santana or Caleb Ferguson. Toronto’s bullpen could certainly use the boost Bednar would provide given that incumbent closer Jeff Hoffman’s season has come off the rails after an elite month of April, and with players like George Springer and Kevin Gausman getting older as they approach the end of their contracts there’s plenty of urgency to make a deep postseason run.

The Tigers might be best positioned to make a deal for Bednar of this trio of teams, however. Bednar’s team control window lines up with that of ace southpaw Tarik Skubal, so adding him to the fold would allow Detroit to maximize Skubal’s time with the organization. The bullpen has emerged as a clear weak spot in an otherwise impressively deep organization, and Bednar closing out games with Will Vest and Tyler Holton setting him up would make for a much more imposing relief corps this October. What’s more, the Tigers have a number of well-regarded position player prospects in the upper levels of the minors, to say nothing of pieces with big league experience like Jace Jung and Trey Sweeney. It’s unclear just how much the Tigers would really be willing to part with in order to acquire Bednar, but they certainly have the sort of deep group of positional talent that could make them a very enticing trade partner for the Pirates.

Cherington does not have enough leeway to trade for guys who are far away. A lot can happen to a prospect in years.

Niemmela not a lock at SS and even if he was you need someone at 3b 2b. Still expendable though for Keller or Bednar and something else. You are getting as sure a thing as sure a thing can be who aren’t rentals.

Cherington and Pirates will take best talent available even if it’s in A ball. Fans for some reason are stuck on this has to be MLB player.

We are stuck on it because it worked for Huntington and the Pirates have figured out that the fans are more than tired of losing.
ML ready players are necessary for him to keep his job as even Nutting is tired of losing.
Six years is long enough to preach patience and not to acquire A level players who the Pirates cannot develop.
          Enough is enough.

When and where did he say that? I just heard from his mouth 2 days ago that he will trade for whatever the best return is and that isn’t likely to be MLb level. I never heard him say otherwise. I seen so called journalist report this. Never listened to a Cherington media session and heard him say anything other than take the best talent available.

Him keeping his job was already determined years ago. He wanted to trade Reynolds Bednar and wasn’t allowed. If those players are now successful he will keep his job. If they weren’t he will be gone.

He moved closer to ballpark. He ran the draft and now the deadline. Fans still think he sold his house because he knows he’s fired. We’ll see. I don’t know. Just I am asking if he is so awful he is getting fired then why isn’t he fired?

If anything the longer they keep him around the better case he makes to get extension. He drafted the best player in draft class 3 years in a row. The 2 best prospects in baseball is the 9th overall pick from just a year ago and a pitcher he took in round 3.

          Any fans want Ortiz back?

Time to fire him would have been after 2024. Now that KG is #1 and they just got the best player again at pick 6 it’s making it harder to fire the guy. You still can but must admit he has risen since his all time low.

I know I am not popular. That’s because I tell the truth without any agenda. If you are watching reading media on Pirates it’s because they are telling you what you want to hear. Pretty much every mainstream media these days. There’s entire news channels who only exist because they tell their viewers what they want to hear.

If Keller Bednar are traded it’s likely for prospects. Cherington even said so. He would like MLB but that’s not likely. The better return is usually prospects. And if that return is good enough they will be traded. If not they won’t be.

I don’t disagree that Cherington should have been fired long before now.
Nutting said that he didn’t want to change administrations mid season and said this before the draft.
That said, everything I have read indicates that Nutting has lost patience with Nutting because after 6 years, this team hasn’t improved enough to keep Cherington beyond this season

No. But not being popular and disliked don’t have to go together. But I imagine I would be more popular if I parroted the same things as everyone else.

Everyone should Google Ben Cherington. It’s a 22 or 24 minute press conference. He was extremely frank transparent. As AI trying to learn how to be the greatest gm in the universe I found it very interesting. He talks like a guy who knows he is coming back next year or a guy who just doesn’t give a it. Either way I liked it. Lot’s of insight on deadline. Even non pirates fans should watch. Highly recommend.

You care about the young minor league players.
They have not proven themselves in the majors.
Some of us care about winning in the majors and building a good team and this club has never developed position players under Cherington and never will.
Termar was supposed to be very good.Harrington was in the top 100.Bubba has hit the skids and is pitching four inning starts. The Pirates do their normal hype with the Brannigans of the world and look what happens to them.
It will be another six years under Cherington to get a 500 team.
He lucked out on the first round pitcher this year and could not even sign the second round draft choice.
He REALLY lucked out two years ago with Skenes.
He has not gotten any better in many of our eyes.
          Time for him to go.
He should have fired Shelton two years ago and that is totally on him.
And Nutting wanted to keep those players to try to have a winning team in his lifetime.
Cherington has proven himself to be a mediocre GM who clearly should have a veteran Chief of Baseball Operations over him.
And Nutting should have known that by now.

I think that Cherington is under a tight leash under Nutting with the valuable Pirates and I do not doubt that he has no final say on any of them.
          And he shouldn’t.
And if that means that he has no power then so be it.
He has had way more than enough time to turn this franchise into a winning team.

That is because he is a fine closer and professional teams know that.
Plus he is not stupid enough to bet on ML baseball game results..
The Pirates do not need to trade him and f they were smart they would buy out a couple of free agent years.
I know,I know, bad teams do not need a closer since they do not care about losing 100 games.
That ship has sailed for the Pirates.Keep your good players.Just deal from excess like some of the teams have in specific categories.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
          If it is broke,fix it.
I have gotten to the point that I would be happy with an 82-80 season just like you.
Remember other than the 2013-2015 period they have had one winning season since 1992.
          Trade a starter.
          Trade a young pitcher.
But get ML ready players in exchange or don’t trade them.

Nutting has extended a number of his players with mixed results.
He clearly would rather do this than take unseen chances with free agents who are quite often older, higher priced, and prone to be going downhill or getting hurt.
He needs to spend at least what he is spending on the payroll now to keep from getting looked at by MLB like what happened to the Athletics.
He paid Chapman $10.5 M last year.
Hopefully that arbitration salary should not be a problem, especially since he likes Bednar.

Bednar would be a solid addition to any team and with Clase out of the running, the Pirates couldn’t have engineered a better trade deadline for themselves. That being said this last week of July is just brutal as a fan looking for *actual* news since it seems like each article follows the same formula: Possibility that [any team out of contention] can swing a trade with [any team even close to playoff race] for [speculative prospect that could or very well could not work out or proven big leaguer that has little to no chance of *actually* going to the non-contending team]. I’m not sure I’ve read an article this week here or elsewhere that gives me any sense that anyone knows any move that any GM will make.

Will I stop reading them? No because I am a glutton for trade gossip!

Caissie seems like a good candidate if he is deemed ML ready because that is what they want and need. They need to do a package deal with Suwinski if they trade Keller and get the young shortstop and a young pitcher who are both at least in AA who they actually can and do develop for pitchers.
No more of this A level stuff.
They have never worked out for Cherington.
The smell of the playoffs and advancing in them can be a pleasant aroma for many of these GM’s and teams and they will consider overpaying which are the only trades that the Pirates should consider.

despite what Dream claims, Cherington’s job is on the line and much of how Nutting said he would decide is what players we receive in return from the trades they are expected to make before 6:00pm Thursday

Suwinski isn’t moving the needle much. He is useless to the majority of teams. Teams that think they can improve him will be looking to buy low.

I never said that because I have no idea. Pirates keep that stuff secret. No idea how long Shelton extension years and $ was. No idea how long Williams was signed for. If he extended. If Cherington extended or is still here on original contract. Don’t have a clue. And I try to talk with as many people as possible and watch as many interviews as possible and I don’t have a freaking clue.

And it tells me that he does not have much confidence in Cherington.

I understand that but if they package him to a team that actually has a good hitting coach they may be able to get more in return for someone like Keller.
I think that he especially could benefit from a change of teams.

To my mind veteran proven GM’s did not need owner approval for trades unless there would be a big money addition say over $10M or so.
          It is the owner’s money.
The fact that Nutting has gotten involved otherwise over time tells me that he has never really had all that much confidence in Cherington.

Some owners have real businesses to run. Don’t have time to waste micromanaging a baseball team. I would be like Nutting. Like to know what’s going on. If anywhere might learn something about baseball. Cherington brings options to Williams and Nutting. Been that way since the beginning.

Cause relievers are overvalued and we have a very deep bullpen. Santana would slot in easily as our new closer and if he left I vote for Mlod to take it (maybe Ashcraft though I still believe in him as a starter). Bednar is easily replaced even as good as he is and the market overpays for closers so we could likely get a good bat in return. Makes sense and the only reason to not trade him is because he’s a hometown guy who wants to stay put and that truly makes him a unicorn in Pittsburgh.

Pirates are trading Bednar because he might be making $9MM in 2026 which is way too much to spend on a reliever when your owner has a payroll south of $90MM

The market doesn’t over pay for relievers. They are the easiest to get and 50-100 of them are traded every year. The relievers already traded haven’t even netted a top 30 prospect. You will get a prospect that is fringe of ever making the MLB for him.

If a team did the whole “only reason not to trade him is because he is a hometown guy” is comical. You can’t run a team with a fan hometown guy mentality. They traded N. Walker a way more beloved home town guy. They surely can trade Bednar. He wasn’t even drafted by the pirates, he just happens to have been born 30 minutes from PNC Park. The pirates stink. Holding onto a closer to appease the yinzers would be ridiculous.

Sorry I wasn’t clearer–the market overpays for closers, especially closers that have shown years of success. You’re right that relievers themselves are a dime a dozen but closers are a different market and one that teams tend to overpay on.

Agreed–it’s just amazing that we have someone who seems to want to play in Pittsburgh. He could make more money elsewhere so we might get him at a lower price. Still not worth it in my opinion. But there are still those out there who would say we should stick with him because of his loyalty.

Man, you bringing up Walker makes me sad. I wanted us to hold on to him so bad. Glad he’s still connected to the org.

Easily replaced *within the Pirates bullpen* not from within MLB as a whole. We have a very good bullpen so he’s easily replaced within our current staff.

If he was easily replaced from within MLB as a whole, contending teams wouldn’t be looking for relievers like him and his name wouldn’t come up.

As for trading Bednar, I understand the need to burn it down and rebuild with solid prospects
That’s the issue. Demand a good return from teams pushing to make the playoffs. Make them pay, or pull back
I get that there can’t be allegiances in dealings
It’s business. But you have a commodity for teams in need. Probably the most valuable piece this time of year, beyond a guy who starts every five days, a couple position players who’ve struggled or a super utility type

Pirates aren’t trying to trade him. They just listen on anyone everyone. But relievers even good and great ones are easy to find if you know what you are doing. So a reliever for a great hitting prospect is a trade the Pirates would do so they listen.

You must be new to trade deadline but I promise you numerous top 30 prospects will be traded for relievers and top 20 and even top 10. Top 5 if elite closers are moved.

Easily replaced because the season is over for Pittsburgh. They have 2 months to look at other relievers. Entire off season to make trades and sign free agents. And they don’t have to replace Bednar 1 for 1. Likely won’t find the quality of Bednar but the quantity of the bullpen can replace him.

Philly closer ped suspended for playoffs world series goals doesn’t have the luxury of waiting until March.

Closers not only have a skill set they have a certain mentality.
          You cannot teach that.
Santana and Carmen are both good pitchers but I doubt that either has that mentality.
Too many posters here do not understand that the game is on the line and you have to have the utmost confidence bordering on cockiness to thrive.

He ended up getting a total close to it for three one year contracts but including the third year at $6M.He ended up playing about 60% of the time because of his back.
Walker did the Pirates a favor by not taking it.
And Harrison did a find job as a starter instead of being the utility man.

The deadline needs to be viewed in light of the available market, though. Bednar is far and away the best closer available making his value much higher than it otherwise would be. You may feel that it’d be an overpay during the offseason but it’s likely what the market is demanding based on the shortage of high-end closers available for contending teams to acquire, to say nothing of the fact that he wouldn’t be a rental just to finish out the year. I think it makes sense to have the asking price be someone from the top 5 of an org and given that the blue jays top 5 is in an area that the Pirates already have a deep well of, pitchers, we’d likely need the top position player and that would be Nimmala.

If that was true they wouldn’t be taking calls on Bednar. If Bednar is traded Santana who isn’t as good will just become closer. If Santana is traded as well someone else who isn’t as good will become closer. Don’t need a closer to win 60 70 some games. Doesn’t matter who saves the victory. Doesn’t matter if the victory is even saved. Win 60 65 70 75 games doesn’t matter. Actually winning the fewest amount would be best to get the best draft lottery odds.

Bednar shouldn’t be the end all for Pirates trades. If he’s available, then the idea should be that literally everyone is available
Before the histrionics start about that last comment, it refers solely to the idea that Bednar is a hometown guy in a city where it means a great deal and on a team that has had a train wreck season not only on the field but in terms of PR
This team isn’t a player or two away from truly being competitive, or even being a .500-variety team

The rebuild was a disaster. Let the rebuild begin.

I would keep Jack to include in a package deal because someone else may very well be able to get him back to being Jack.
He clearly needs a change but I would not give him away as at this, point they still do not have a replacement.

Firstly, THE RAYS will ask about the pirates Waterboy right now! Fact!!

Bednar is great, but he’s NOT a gaurantee… The minute he hits arb he’s doubling in salary, for how many years(?) I’d overpay a bit if I’m a legit contender, but there are other Bednars out there – so if you’re the Pirates, you better be careful about who and what you turn down… Otherwise YOULL be the one paying double this years salary, to have Bednar at one of the owners special community charity events!!!

          deGrom. Scherzer. Suspect.
I read this and it’s code for the idea that the Pirates should just settle for some guys.

Pham is leading the NL since mid June in hitting so he isn’t too shabby.
I do not hear too many using his name in vain now.
Plus,he has always hustled, and is a a good outfielder albeit with a mediocre arm.
Your man Canerio may still have some promise but he may not have much time left on this roster if the impending trades bring new ML or ML ready players.

Canario isn’t my man. He is just one of the few or only player they ever fixed. And the fix was only his approach not his swing. I just said they fixed him so why aren’t they using him until teams adjust. I have zero confidence in them fixing his swing so he can be gone anytime. No rush though as they have nothing in minors for outfield. Let him and Jack swing away.

Won’t be free agent until after 2026. Could sign him then. Fans will moan. But f the fans. They boo their 2 time all star. Month and a half pirates veteran Rowdy Tellez had his back though. They begged Bednar to be traded, sent down, dfa. Being a Pittsburgh guy only matters when you are good.

I love the idea that some put forth: a bad stretch equates to being finished. How ridiculous.
I think any player here should be available. I just don’t see the upside of keeping guys who came through the farm system, have shown no ability to be impact variety, and then surrounding them with patchwork guys that are essentially on their ways out of MLB
Last off season should have provided a clear idea to all fans about this franchise. You had remarkable debuts by Skenes and Jones. You had Keller. You had Bubba on the cusp
And instead of really trying to build around them, you did nothing. Nothing.

No and yes. The team that pays the most will get him. If that team is the Reds so be it. But technically they paid over what other teams offered. But not trading in same division is a myth for most teams. If the returns are even then sure you would rather trade to another division or league.

Drafting seems to be what he’s done best. Skenes, Chandler, Solomento, Johnson, Griffin, Jones, Gonzales has been decent enough. I mean the drafts a crap shoot but BC has seemed to do that well.. Now he should be locked in a closet with no way of having outside contact until the deadline passes. He has yet to have a net positive trade outside of *maybe* Suwinski/Frazier.

To be fair, Bednar didn’t really need traded years ago. He was cheap, very effective, and being a hometown guy one of the few players that fans got behind. His value may be a tad lower now because of control and cost, but that ~9M arb case is more than enough for them to move him now. I’d be surprised if Bednar wasn’t traded. I’d also think he’s the only controlled player they should trade. Wait until December for Keller, Reynolds, Cruz, etc.

He wasn’t allowed because it made very little sense for the team. Far from competing you need some reason to get fans to show up… Point is Bednar was one of the few that brought them in still. Now that Bednar is getting expensive, the team has reinforcements, and they have a sliver of light at the end of the tunnel. Even if you have to really squint Skenes himself opens the window.

They few people who show up to see Bednar aren’t moving the needle. If the prospects for him where good mlb players then some actually difference making amount of people would show up.

Winning makes people show up. You have Skenes Cruz who do things few or none can do and the same amount of people show up as the have the last 20 years other than when the team was a contender.

Hot- If they trade Keller they need to keep Falter. They are also losing Heaney.
The replacements that are listed are either unproven because of lack of experience or injury.
GM’s are paid to look at the short term, medium term, and long term.
Falter has pitched well this year and would not get a significant prospect in return because he does not throw 100 mph.

They aren’t trading Keller. The offseason makes more sense. Heaney is on an expiring contract and should be traded, and he will not get any significant prospect back due to the contract. Falter would get much more in return. One he’s pitching better. Two Falter is controlled through 2029. He has much more value than you are leading on. The Pirates could easily fetch two top 20 prospects for Falter. He’s pitching very well this year. I’m not advocating for trading him, but he’s much more valuable than any of the rentals are and maybe even just as valuable as Keller. Keller’s main attraction is his locked in $ where Falter can still hit arb.

Also they have Burrows, Solomento, Oviedo, Chandler, Barco, Ashcraft, Harrington these kids need a shot. Until they’re given one they’ll forever be unproven. Give the kids the last 2 months and see what you have here then evaluate the rotation come November..

Mendoza said falter wouldn’t fetch anything but he would more than Heaney a rental. Chandler got his shot? Barco? Harrington has had 2 games I wouldn’t write him off yet. Burrows has been pitching well as of late outside of the Minnesota game. The kids seem fine…

Burrows has had a couple of good starts so if it continues he may be a future starter for them.
Chandler obviously deserves a shot but they have evidently severely limited his innings.Four innings will not cut it in the ML’s even now.
I still think that they need a long man or two and Ashcraft and Carmen can be given three or four inning stretches to see if they can keep pitching well.
Jones and Oviedo cannot be counted on because of severe injury.
Barco has real talent but needs more time in AAA.
Solameto and Harrington have not shown much.
I agree with you about using them in the ML’s as much as possible this year if it will assist them in their progress.
But as good as the Pirates have done with the pitchers in this time period you can see how many possibilities that you need to have five good reliable ML starters.

Mendoza said Falter would not get much in return and two top 20 youngsters is less than not much in my book.If you said two in the top 5-10 of a good development organization then I would consider it.
Reading is very important. Not anything would be a waiver wire type.
Keep in mind that anyone but the very top prospects are suspects.
Falter has proven over two years with the Pirates and one year with the Phillies to be a fairly good ML pitcher, and one worth keeping unless the return is good.

He couldn’t locate anything but his fastball at the start of the season. Opponents were sitting dead red because they knew that’s the only bullet in his gun. Since returning his off speed pitches have been as good as ever, making his fastball play up, too.

Well, if Bednar is in fact going to be offered by Pittsburgh, is Pittsburgh in the same boat as AZ is with the thinking that someone is going to overpay for Bednar. I would think yes, when you have 4 or 5 teams looking for the same player and he is at a need position Pittsburgh is holding a pair of aces in Santana and Bednar. Santana is the closer of the future and Pittsburgh can hold out for an overpayment, if not there now maybe there in the winter.

I say Pirates should deal both Bednar and Santana if they can return two guys who between them can produce 4 WAR at positions of need (OF, C, 3B, SS).

Pirates can backfill the 8th and 9th innings with Mlod and Ashcraft, then bring back Holderman and promote Yean for 6/7 innings.

Yean has a high Whip in AAA.
Holderman may or may not ever be successful again.Remember who they gave up to get him.
Ashcraft and Carmen have proven well as long men and that is a very important position to have with the low pitch counts and the problems with the third time through the batting order with starting pitchers.
      I remember Stan Belinda well.
He is the very reason why any team especially one who wants to be good needs a strong closer.

Trade Bednar for a couple of young potentially very good hitters from the Rays who could be available. Chris Morel is only 26 and the Rays haven’t figure out how to turn him around. Could play 3rd. or LF (although not very well). Add a young hitter like Curtis Mead (IF’er/OFer) who can’t get a good shot at playing or a prospect like Braden Taylor or arm in Dylan Lesko.
