With this year’s trade deadline just a matter of days away, the Pirates could be one of the more active sellers over the next few days. According to a report from Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Pirates GM Ben Cherington is “looking to sell high” on closer David Bednar as he fields inquiries from multiple contenders regarding the 30-year-old. The Yankees, Dodgers, Phillies, and Cubs have all previously been connected to Bednar this summer. Hiles reiterates the Phillies’ interest in the righty and adds two additional suitors to the pile: the Rangers and the Tigers. What’s more, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports this morning that Pittsburgh has discussed the possibility of a deal with the Blue Jays that would send a reliever to Toronto, although it’s unclear whether that relief arm would be Bednar or another piece like Dennis Santana.
It’s hardly a shock that any of these newly-reported clubs would be interested in Bednar’s services. The two-time All-Star has been one of the league’s best closers for years now. Dating back to the 2021 season, Bednar has a 3.01 ERA and 101 saves in 275 1/3 innings of work. He’s struck out 29.4% of his opponents and has a 2.94 FIP. Those are already very impressive numbers, but they become all the more significant when one considers that Bednar struggled badly last year with a 5.77 ERA and 4.80 FIP across 62 appearances.
That his overall numbers remain that strong despite his brutal 2024 shows how utterly dominant Bednar has been the rest of the time, and 2025 is no exception. This year, he’s pitched to a 2.37 ERA with 17 saves and a 33.1% strikeout rate to go with a 1.96 FIP in 38 innings of work. He surrendered his first run since May 23 during last night’s save against the Giants and sports an eye-popping 1.70 ERA and 1.47 FIP dating back to April 19. That’s the day Bednar returned to the majors after three rough outings in Pittsburgh’s first four games of the season convinced the Pirates to option him to Triple-A for the reset. To say that reset has worked out would be an understatement, as Bednar’s elite play since his return has made him perhaps the club’s most valuable trade chip this summer.
Bednar’s value has risen enough that Hiles writes the Pirates are asking potential suitors to include one prospect within their organization’s top five in the return package for his services. The Pirates are known to be targeting upper-level hitting prospects and big league ready offensive talent this summer as they look to build a stronger position player corps to support Paul Skenes and the rest of their vaunted pitching core in 2026 and beyond. That makes some clubs a difficult fit for the Pirates’ needs. The Rangers, for example, surely wouldn’t consider parting with top prospect Sebastian Walcott in this sort of deal but have few other highly-rated, upper-level positional prospects in their system. Likewise, six of the Blue Jays’ top seven prospects according to MLB Pipeline are pitchers. By contrast, teams like the Tigers, Cubs, and Dodgers have a bevy of positional talent, some of which is in Double- and Triple-A already, from which they could deal if so inclined.
A club not being a perfect fit for the Pirates’s preferred return doesn’t necessarily mean a deal can’t be made as long as the buying club is sufficiently motivated, however. The Rangers seem like a particularly strong fit for Bednar. They enter trade season pressed up against the luxury tax with minimal room to take on salary barring a sudden change of heart from ownership, and taking on the final two months of Bednar’s $5.9MM salary for the season would be an extremely light financial burden for a player of Bednar’s caliber. Additionally, their recent struggles with putting together a quality bullpen could make someone controlled beyond the 2025 season like Bednar (who will reach free agency after 2026) an especially attractive option.
Speculatively speaking, perhaps there’s a deal to be made between the Rangers and Pirates involving a big league hitter like Adolis Garcia supported by lower-level prospects from Texas’s system. Likewise, the Blue Jays have a number of young position players who have graduated from prospect status who they could consider trading in the right deal, whether that’s for Bednar or another reliever like Santana or Caleb Ferguson. Toronto’s bullpen could certainly use the boost Bednar would provide given that incumbent closer Jeff Hoffman’s season has come off the rails after an elite month of April, and with players like George Springer and Kevin Gausman getting older as they approach the end of their contracts there’s plenty of urgency to make a deep postseason run.
The Tigers might be best positioned to make a deal for Bednar of this trio of teams, however. Bednar’s team control window lines up with that of ace southpaw Tarik Skubal, so adding him to the fold would allow Detroit to maximize Skubal’s time with the organization. The bullpen has emerged as a clear weak spot in an otherwise impressively deep organization, and Bednar closing out games with Will Vest and Tyler Holton setting him up would make for a much more imposing relief corps this October. What’s more, the Tigers have a number of well-regarded position player prospects in the upper levels of the minors, to say nothing of pieces with big league experience like Jace Jung and Trey Sweeney. It’s unclear just how much the Tigers would really be willing to part with in order to acquire Bednar, but they certainly have the sort of deep group of positional talent that could make them a very enticing trade partner for the Pirates.
Does Jo Jo Parker make Niemmela expendable? Would take a lot more than bednar to get him though
Niemmela is too far away. Skenes window is now, Bucs need bats that can be ready now or April at latest.
Your crazy if you think the Pirates would pass on better talent because they are to young.
Cherington does not have enough leeway to trade for guys who are far away. A lot can happen to a prospect in years.
Niemmela not a lock at SS and even if he was you need someone at 3b 2b. Still expendable though for Keller or Bednar and something else. You are getting as sure a thing as sure a thing can be who aren’t rentals.
Cherington and Pirates will take best talent available even if it’s in A ball. Fans for some reason are stuck on this has to be MLB player.
we’re stuck on it because this is what Cherington said that he wants
The piece literally says that they want mlb ready players back to supplement Skenes
We are stuck on it because it worked for Huntington and the Pirates have figured out that the fans are more than tired of losing.
ML ready players are necessary for him to keep his job as even Nutting is tired of losing.
Six years is long enough to preach patience and not to acquire A level players who the Pirates cannot develop.
Enough is enough.
When and where did he say that? I just heard from his mouth 2 days ago that he will trade for whatever the best return is and that isn’t likely to be MLb level. I never heard him say otherwise. I seen so called journalist report this. Never listened to a Cherington media session and heard him say anything other than take the best talent available.
I don’t give a it what the piece says. Cherington said he will take best talent available even if it’s lower minors. It’s 2025 stop falling for the fake news.
with all due respect, Dream, just because you didn’t hear Ben say it, it doesn’t make it fake news
Him keeping his job was already determined years ago. He wanted to trade Reynolds Bednar and wasn’t allowed. If those players are now successful he will keep his job. If they weren’t he will be gone.
He moved closer to ballpark. He ran the draft and now the deadline. Fans still think he sold his house because he knows he’s fired. We’ll see. I don’t know. Just I am asking if he is so awful he is getting fired then why isn’t he fired?
If anything the longer they keep him around the better case he makes to get extension. He drafted the best player in draft class 3 years in a row. The 2 best prospects in baseball is the 9th overall pick from just a year ago and a pitcher he took in round 3.
Any fans want Ortiz back?
Time to fire him would have been after 2024. Now that KG is #1 and they just got the best player again at pick 6 it’s making it harder to fire the guy. You still can but must admit he has risen since his all time low.
It does when 2 days ago I heard him speak so anything saying the opposite of what came out of his mouth is fake news.
I know I am not popular. That’s because I tell the truth without any agenda. If you are watching reading media on Pirates it’s because they are telling you what you want to hear. Pretty much every mainstream media these days. There’s entire news channels who only exist because they tell their viewers what they want to hear.
If Keller Bednar are traded it’s likely for prospects. Cherington even said so. He would like MLB but that’s not likely. The better return is usually prospects. And if that return is good enough they will be traded. If not they won’t be.
Nimmala is better than most of the Pirates lineup- both offensively snd defensively
Dude, you’re wrong… just be a man and admit it…
You sound like a Democrat
I don’t disagree that Cherington should have been fired long before now.
Nutting said that he didn’t want to change administrations mid season and said this before the draft.
That said, everything I have read indicates that Nutting has lost patience with Nutting because after 6 years, this team hasn’t improved enough to keep Cherington beyond this season
do you really think that because people disagree with you that you’re disliked?
Come on, Dream, don’t take our disagreements personal
I would rather sound like a Democrat than a pathological lying sociopath narcissistic woman abusing hypocrite
Nutting said this or you read he said it? I never heard him say it not saying he didn’t. Just doesn’t sound like something a owner would say. Owner would say we have total confidence in Ben and then fire him 2 weeks later.
No. But not being popular and disliked don’t have to go together. But I imagine I would be more popular if I parroted the same things as everyone else.
Everyone should Google Ben Cherington. It’s a 22 or 24 minute press conference. He was extremely frank transparent. As AI trying to learn how to be the greatest gm in the universe I found it very interesting. He talks like a guy who knows he is coming back next year or a guy who just doesn’t give a it. Either way I liked it. Lot’s of insight on deadline. Even non pirates fans should watch. Highly recommend.
tbh Cherington is not the main problem. Nutting is the main problem, because he will not spend any money!!! Just sayin’!!!
Maybe he is talking about the pending free agents.
If he makes the same stupid mistakes again with trading the valuable players he should be put out of town on a rail.
You care about the young minor league players.
They have not proven themselves in the majors.
Some of us care about winning in the majors and building a good team and this club has never developed position players under Cherington and never will.
Termar was supposed to be very good.Harrington was in the top 100.Bubba has hit the skids and is pitching four inning starts. The Pirates do their normal hype with the Brannigans of the world and look what happens to them.
It will be another six years under Cherington to get a 500 team.
He lucked out on the first round pitcher this year and could not even sign the second round draft choice.
He REALLY lucked out two years ago with Skenes.
He has not gotten any better in many of our eyes.
Time for him to go.
He should have fired Shelton two years ago and that is totally on him.
And Nutting wanted to keep those players to try to have a winning team in his lifetime.
Cherington has proven himself to be a mediocre GM who clearly should have a veteran Chief of Baseball Operations over him.
And Nutting should have known that by now.
I think that Cherington is under a tight leash under Nutting with the valuable Pirates and I do not doubt that he has no final say on any of them.
And he shouldn’t.
And if that means that he has no power then so be it.
He has had way more than enough time to turn this franchise into a winning team.
Can’t build a good mlb team without prospects. Harrington was never a top 100. Just websites that don’t know anything put him there.
Aren’t we all are interested in Bednar?
No only 1st place teams
That is because he is a fine closer and professional teams know that.
Plus he is not stupid enough to bet on ML baseball game results..
The Pirates do not need to trade him and f they were smart they would buy out a couple of free agent years.
I know,I know, bad teams do not need a closer since they do not care about losing 100 games.
That ship has sailed for the Pirates.Keep your good players.Just deal from excess like some of the teams have in specific categories.
Disagree only in “keep your good players”
Why?
And on the other hand, other than Cruz, perhaps, who?
Old-I understand your rationale.
But I am tired of losing and waiting another six years to find out the same things.
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
If it is broke,fix it.
I have gotten to the point that I would be happy with an 82-80 season just like you.
Remember other than the 2013-2015 period they have had one winning season since 1992.
Trade a starter.
Trade a young pitcher.
But get ML ready players in exchange or don’t trade them.
Who are these guys? I see neither on the top 30 for Detroit or Texas.
Trey Sweeney? For Bednar? All. Day. Long.
If they somehow would take Jace Jung for him I would anoint Scott Harris exec of the decade.
If Veirling keeps struggling, I’d like to see if the Tigs would give Jace another shot.
@ toble
I would bet that Vierling completing his spring training soon and finding his rhythm is way more likely than Jace Jung hitting MLB pitching this year.
I’d rather you be right
And I’m interested in Sophie Lloyd.
Go American!
Dolly has her own theme park…including mountain rides..!
LOL! I love Sophie’s British accent though.
I just Googled her Joe and my sense is that she is already taken.
Many times….
Yeah, a little out of my league. She’s an amazing guitar player though.
Seems like a great fit for the Tigers. No one has more trade chips than Detroit going into this trade deadline. If I’m selling, I’m calling Detroit.
Cherington doesn’t have to trade Bednar and if isn’t blown away by a return, Bednar would be pitching for the Bucs next year
And Cherington isn’t calling anyone, he’s waiting for a team to overwhelm him with players who will help them this season and beyond
Bednar could be making over $9MM in 2026. He doesn’t have to trade him but he really should be.
my point was that if Ben doesn’t get what he’s looking for,, Bednar won’t be traded.
Nutting, from everything I’ve read, is paying very close attention to what Cherington does in the next two days
9 million is nothing
Nutting has extended a number of his players with mixed results.
He clearly would rather do this than take unseen chances with free agents who are quite often older, higher priced, and prone to be going downhill or getting hurt.
He needs to spend at least what he is spending on the payroll now to keep from getting looked at by MLB like what happened to the Athletics.
He paid Chapman $10.5 M last year.
Hopefully that arbitration salary should not be a problem, especially since he likes Bednar.
Bednar would be a solid addition to any team and with Clase out of the running, the Pirates couldn’t have engineered a better trade deadline for themselves. That being said this last week of July is just brutal as a fan looking for *actual* news since it seems like each article follows the same formula: Possibility that [any team out of contention] can swing a trade with [any team even close to playoff race] for [speculative prospect that could or very well could not work out or proven big leaguer that has little to no chance of *actually* going to the non-contending team]. I’m not sure I’ve read an article this week here or elsewhere that gives me any sense that anyone knows any move that any GM will make.
Will I stop reading them? No because I am a glutton for trade gossip!
Website needs traffic and clicks so any article they can post they need to. I just come for comments.
Makes sense the pirates have been scouting Erie the AA affiliate for the tigers for a while. We need a ss a power hitting LF and some more position players in AA or AAA.
Correction
we need players who will make an impact immediately with years of control
Don’t need impact players immediately and likely won’t get them.
Caissie seems like a good candidate if he is deemed ML ready because that is what they want and need. They need to do a package deal with Suwinski if they trade Keller and get the young shortstop and a young pitcher who are both at least in AA who they actually can and do develop for pitchers.
No more of this A level stuff.
They have never worked out for Cherington.
The smell of the playoffs and advancing in them can be a pleasant aroma for many of these GM’s and teams and they will consider overpaying which are the only trades that the Pirates should consider.
despite what Dream claims, Cherington’s job is on the line and much of how Nutting said he would decide is what players we receive in return from the trades they are expected to make before 6:00pm Thursday
More fake news from the king of reading fake news. I never said Cheringtons job wasn’t on the line.
Suwinski isn’t moving the needle much. He is useless to the majority of teams. Teams that think they can improve him will be looking to buy low.
I vividly remember when you said that Cherington still had 2 years left on his contract and wouldn’t get fired
You can’t vividly tell me what you had for dinner last night.
I never said that because I have no idea. Pirates keep that stuff secret. No idea how long Shelton extension years and $ was. No idea how long Williams was signed for. If he extended. If Cherington extended or is still here on original contract. Don’t have a clue. And I try to talk with as many people as possible and watch as many interviews as possible and I don’t have a freaking clue.
Sounds like something bright eyes would say.
mlbtraderumors.com/2025/05/pirates-notes-haddad-ch…
“Bad news is your top 2 executives are lame ducks. Having people running your operation knowing they are going to be fired in 5 months is terrible business move.
Awful news is Nutting informed them they won’t be fired and will be running the team again in 2026!!!!!!!!”
Sand is on spectrum
that’s why it’s “MLBTradeRUMORS”
I hope that Nutting does get involved.
That tells me that he at least cares some.
And it tells me that he does not have much confidence in Cherington.
Which he shouldn’t.
I understand that but if they package him to a team that actually has a good hitting coach they may be able to get more in return for someone like Keller.
I think that he especially could benefit from a change of teams.
Even worse news is if you are Stephen Colbert and know that your entertainment end is near.
Lil bit but since other teams can’t fix him they won’t have much competition.
Take Hayes, please
On behalf of the fans of Detroit, I say, no thank you.
Pretty please?
lol, well, seeing you asked so nicely!
See! Cherington could learn a thing or two from me hahaha
If people in the world were just a little nicer (take example from you) imagine how much better of a place this could be! lol.
I’m admittingly not normally this nice online I have to be brutally honest. I’m trying though!
Top 5 prospect for Bednar? That’s kind of steep. I would move Liranzo of the Tigers Top 5. I would be super hesitant to move any of the other 4.
Bednar is not chopped liver, he is a proven stud closer, they will need an outfielder for sure
He’s still a reliever rental.
Under team control through 2026
How is he a rental? He isn’t a FA until 2027. Just because he’s arb eligible?
He is doesn’t become an unrestricted free agent till 2027.
Then why are the Pirates trying to trade him? What do they possibly think they would get back to think they would be better next season?
Cause relievers are overvalued and we have a very deep bullpen. Santana would slot in easily as our new closer and if he left I vote for Mlod to take it (maybe Ashcraft though I still believe in him as a starter). Bednar is easily replaced even as good as he is and the market overpays for closers so we could likely get a good bat in return. Makes sense and the only reason to not trade him is because he’s a hometown guy who wants to stay put and that truly makes him a unicorn in Pittsburgh.
you don’t seem to know much about players contracts
Pirates are trading Bednar because he might be making $9MM in 2026 which is way too much to spend on a reliever when your owner has a payroll south of $90MM
The market doesn’t over pay for relievers. They are the easiest to get and 50-100 of them are traded every year. The relievers already traded haven’t even netted a top 30 prospect. You will get a prospect that is fringe of ever making the MLB for him.
If a team did the whole “only reason not to trade him is because he is a hometown guy” is comical. You can’t run a team with a fan hometown guy mentality. They traded N. Walker a way more beloved home town guy. They surely can trade Bednar. He wasn’t even drafted by the pirates, he just happens to have been born 30 minutes from PNC Park. The pirates stink. Holding onto a closer to appease the yinzers would be ridiculous.
Sorry I wasn’t clearer–the market overpays for closers, especially closers that have shown years of success. You’re right that relievers themselves are a dime a dozen but closers are a different market and one that teams tend to overpay on.
Agreed–it’s just amazing that we have someone who seems to want to play in Pittsburgh. He could make more money elsewhere so we might get him at a lower price. Still not worth it in my opinion. But there are still those out there who would say we should stick with him because of his loyalty.
Man, you bringing up Walker makes me sad. I wanted us to hold on to him so bad. Glad he’s still connected to the org.
If Bednar is easily replaced, then why would teams be interested in trading for him? Easily replaced means teams should be able to find equivalent elsewhere..
Easily replaced *within the Pirates bullpen* not from within MLB as a whole. We have a very good bullpen so he’s easily replaced within our current staff.
If he was easily replaced from within MLB as a whole, contending teams wouldn’t be looking for relievers like him and his name wouldn’t come up.
Maybe easily replaced because the team doesn’t win much, how about that?
Skeptical said elsewhere that he didn’t necessarily want to see Hayes go. Me? I’d keep Bednar until I couldn’t anymore. Local kid, but a bulldog, too. Pitches with passion. Hates losing
I’ll take a team full of those guys over a team full of whatever it is we have here—-aloof, expressionless, passion lacking—now
What’s ridiculous—and hilarious—is your ignorance about our town and what matters a great deal to fans. You’re embarrassing yourself with the insults, pal
As for trading Bednar, I understand the need to burn it down and rebuild with solid prospects
That’s the issue. Demand a good return from teams pushing to make the playoffs. Make them pay, or pull back
I get that there can’t be allegiances in dealings
It’s business. But you have a commodity for teams in need. Probably the most valuable piece this time of year, beyond a guy who starts every five days, a couple position players who’ve struggled or a super utility type
Bednar is close to the owner as the latter hosts a number of charitable events that Bednar volunteers his time for.
That’s one reason why Bednar is popular in this area
Bednar worth top 5. Until last night he hadn’t given up a run since May 23. Likable fan favorite guy.
Pirates aren’t trying to trade him. They just listen on anyone everyone. But relievers even good and great ones are easy to find if you know what you are doing. So a reliever for a great hitting prospect is a trade the Pirates would do so they listen.
They traded walked because they were afraid of his back and had a younger cheaper Harrison and thought they could work their reclamation pitcher magic. Didn’t work out but why they did it. Most things didn’t work out after that.
Who said anything about over paying? A top 5 prospect is simply fair market price. And top 5 is top 3 to 7 depending on team.
You must be new to trade deadline but I promise you numerous top 30 prospects will be traded for relievers and top 20 and even top 10. Top 5 if elite closers are moved.
Easily replaced because the season is over for Pittsburgh. They have 2 months to look at other relievers. Entire off season to make trades and sign free agents. And they don’t have to replace Bednar 1 for 1. Likely won’t find the quality of Bednar but the quantity of the bullpen can replace him.
Philly closer ped suspended for playoffs world series goals doesn’t have the luxury of waiting until March.
Sandlot-Bednar is not easily replaced.
Closers not only have a skill set they have a certain mentality.
You cannot teach that.
Santana and Carmen are both good pitchers but I doubt that either has that mentality.
Too many posters here do not understand that the game is on the line and you have to have the utmost confidence bordering on cockiness to thrive.
There is nothing worse than losing games that should be won and are for eight innings in the ninth inning.
Well, Walker refused a move to 1st as I remember. Then when they put him on the trading block, he recanted that
A team that isn’t contending next season either won’t need a closer.
Mets-He won’t be traded then.
The teams that want him will have to meet what the Pirates want and it will not be a fringe prospect.
He is a closer and not just a reliever.
Holderman tried to close a couple of years ago when he was pitching well and Bednar was overworked and clearly did not have the stomach for it.
Closers are much different than relievers.
Old- This post makes too much sense.
Plus, without him they would have at least ten more losses and be between the White Sox and Rockies for the worst team in baseball.
They had offered Walker a good three year contract but he wanted more.
He ended up getting a total close to it for three one year contracts but including the third year at $6M.He ended up playing about 60% of the time because of his back.
Walker did the Pirates a favor by not taking it.
And Harrison did a find job as a starter instead of being the utility man.
That would be Alvarado.
It is interesting to me to see if other pitchers are caught doing the same things that Clase and Ortiz are suspected of doing.
Their suspensions will be permanent like Marcano’s was.
Time to find a new profession.
that makes no sense.
Even non competitive teams win games and would need a closer to save the victory
Even some of the best closers are subject to flop- take Jordan Romano of the Phillies – great in Toronto, and now the Phillies can’t get rid of him soon enough!!! Bednar has been suspect, in the recent past , but now he’s great. He’s a surfboarder riding a wave, but you know that he’s going to fall off…
Loperfido , or Schneider from toronto would be a great “get” for Bednar , or Luzardo Estrada, a young pitcher than has great stuff…
You’d NEVER get a top-50 MLB prospect for Bednar. I realize how good he is, and how badly Toronto needs him, but Nimmala is a huge overpay for Bednar…
The deadline needs to be viewed in light of the available market, though. Bednar is far and away the best closer available making his value much higher than it otherwise would be. You may feel that it’d be an overpay during the offseason but it’s likely what the market is demanding based on the shortage of high-end closers available for contending teams to acquire, to say nothing of the fact that he wouldn’t be a rental just to finish out the year. I think it makes sense to have the asking price be someone from the top 5 of an org and given that the blue jays top 5 is in an area that the Pirates already have a deep well of, pitchers, we’d likely need the top position player and that would be Nimmala.
If that was true they wouldn’t be taking calls on Bednar. If Bednar is traded Santana who isn’t as good will just become closer. If Santana is traded as well someone else who isn’t as good will become closer. Don’t need a closer to win 60 70 some games. Doesn’t matter who saves the victory. Doesn’t matter if the victory is even saved. Win 60 65 70 75 games doesn’t matter. Actually winning the fewest amount would be best to get the best draft lottery odds.
Florida-I agree with you.
Ninmala is hitting 230 in class A,but he would be a huge overpay for one of the best closers in all of ML baseball because he is projected to be another Dave Winfield in the year 2525.
Yes,and the beat would go on forever.
Go through a three year period losing 100 games each year so they can ramp it up to a maximum of 76 games won in a year.
These discussions were had five years ago.
Deja vu.
Liranzo is a top 100 switch hitting catcher with power. Someone called him a unicorn because of that. With a highly rated minor league system the Tigers #5 prospect is at a different level than some other teams. I can’t see them moving him unless it was an expanded deal.
Hoffman’s season has hardly come off the rails. Yes he got bombed in May but he was very good in June and pretty good in July.
Khal Stephen & Roden for Bednar… do it!
Bednar for 1 Fantastic Four pizza and an order of crazy bread … I’ll even throw in crazy sauce.
Throw yourself in that trade too….crazy?
I’m a 49 yr old lefty who’s only played softball… I’m down
Bednar shouldn’t be the end all for Pirates trades. If he’s available, then the idea should be that literally everyone is available
Before the histrionics start about that last comment, it refers solely to the idea that Bednar is a hometown guy in a city where it means a great deal and on a team that has had a train wreck season not only on the field but in terms of PR
This team isn’t a player or two away from truly being competitive, or even being a .500-variety team
The rebuild was a disaster. Let the rebuild begin.
Burn it all down, but make that include the player development department
That’s why I an against. a AA player being traded back to any Bednar trade
Our player development will destroy whatever potential these young guys have
Everyone reporting that the Pirates want a top 5 prospect type. Question is, can that kind of player succeed in spite of the player development staff?
Pirates don’t need prospects. They want major league ready hitters. People who report this nonsense should get on with their life’s work.
according to the Post Gazette, Bednar potential trade, will cost the team that wants him, a high price to obtain him.
Another words, Cherington isn’t going to give him away.
Also the Rays have been asking about Suwinski
Who knows. Cherington has never traded for a proven top 5 talent.
Groundbreaking reporting there. Best available closer with another year of control won’t be given away.
Hold on breaking news from ai gm. Mitch Keller will also not be given away! You heard it here first.
I would keep Jack to include in a package deal because someone else may very well be able to get him back to being Jack.
He clearly needs a change but I would not give him away as at this, point they still do not have a replacement.
Canerio?Please.
Canario perfect replacement. Both will replace Pham. A guy from the left who can’t hit and guy from right who can’t hit. A can’t hit platoon.
Firstly, THE RAYS will ask about the pirates Waterboy right now! Fact!!
Bednar is great, but he’s NOT a gaurantee… The minute he hits arb he’s doubling in salary, for how many years(?) I’d overpay a bit if I’m a legit contender, but there are other Bednars out there – so if you’re the Pirates, you better be careful about who and what you turn down… Otherwise YOULL be the one paying double this years salary, to have Bednar at one of the owners special community charity events!!!
I hope you aren’t coaching actual people. Bednar is already arbitration. Arb 2. And his salary will not double next year that’s not how arbitration works.
I like the word “suspect”here
If you’re going by Bednar’s little trouble spot, then all pitchers are “suspect”
deGrom. Scherzer. Suspect.
I read this and it’s code for the idea that the Pirates should just settle for some guys.
Pham is leading the NL since mid June in hitting so he isn’t too shabby.
I do not hear too many using his name in vain now.
Plus,he has always hustled, and is a a good outfielder albeit with a mediocre arm.
Your man Canerio may still have some promise but he may not have much time left on this roster if the impending trades bring new ML or ML ready players.
Old-The trades suggested on this site rarely make sense and are almost always the work of “ homers” which is pretty much just being human.
They are for entertainment purposes only.
Who says that they can’t trade him and then sign him as free agent. The Yankees did it with chapmen. If you can turn him into 3 players because he is the best closer available on the trade market.
Would the reds really have to overpay just because they’re in the same division?
No and yes. The team that pays the most will get him. If that team is the Reds so be it. But technically they paid over what other teams offered. But not trading in same division is a myth for most teams. If the returns are even then sure you would rather trade to another division or league.
Problem right now is the Pirates GM May be a lame duck. Rumors abound he will be out after the season. Not sure how much more damage this guy will be allowed to to oversee outside of dealing people like Pham, Heaney and falter, none of who will return anything significant.
Falter isn’t on the block , Caleb Ferguson is
Yeah, they’re waffling now. Keller. Hayes. Reynolds. All were mentioned as trade possibles. Santana. Heaney. IKF.
Now who knows?
It’s like a continual poker game here
As for the GM, I’m amazed they let him draft
Drafting seems to be what he’s done best. Skenes, Chandler, Solomento, Johnson, Griffin, Jones, Gonzales has been decent enough. I mean the drafts a crap shoot but BC has seemed to do that well.. Now he should be locked in a closet with no way of having outside contact until the deadline passes. He has yet to have a net positive trade outside of *maybe* Suwinski/Frazier.
When your #2. draft pick decides he doesn’t want to sign with the Bucs and instead attend college, the GM himself isn’t looked too good with the owner
Owner will love the #2 pick didn’t sign. They get the pick back next year. That’s just 2 to 3 million he can invest for another year. Next years draft is a much better class.
Cherington won’t be making major trades. Never has. Him and his team go over the possibilities and then he discusses it with Williams and Nutting.
Cherington wanted to trade Bednar years ago and wasn’t allowed.
To be fair, Bednar didn’t really need traded years ago. He was cheap, very effective, and being a hometown guy one of the few players that fans got behind. His value may be a tad lower now because of control and cost, but that ~9M arb case is more than enough for them to move him now. I’d be surprised if Bednar wasn’t traded. I’d also think he’s the only controlled player they should trade. Wait until December for Keller, Reynolds, Cruz, etc.
Sure. Point was Cherington wasn’t allowed to make trade. Definitely didn’t need to be traded.
He wasn’t allowed because it made very little sense for the team. Far from competing you need some reason to get fans to show up… Point is Bednar was one of the few that brought them in still. Now that Bednar is getting expensive, the team has reinforcements, and they have a sliver of light at the end of the tunnel. Even if you have to really squint Skenes himself opens the window.
Where’s Richard to tell you about fans showing up?
They few people who show up to see Bednar aren’t moving the needle. If the prospects for him where good mlb players then some actually difference making amount of people would show up.
Winning makes people show up. You have Skenes Cruz who do things few or none can do and the same amount of people show up as the have the last 20 years other than when the team was a contender.
In 2021 it did move the needle for them. And that’s just incorrect. 1.7m in 2024. 2.4m in 2014. I promise you if they win we’d show up. It’s proven…
Everyone is on the spectrum but me apparently
Look in the mirror pal, it might just be you.
Good comeback there kid
Don’t let the man fool you, Falter is 110% on the block. Every non Skenes player is. Falter may never have higher value – deal him immediately.
Hot- If they trade Keller they need to keep Falter. They are also losing Heaney.
The replacements that are listed are either unproven because of lack of experience or injury.
GM’s are paid to look at the short term, medium term, and long term.
Falter has pitched well this year and would not get a significant prospect in return because he does not throw 100 mph.
They aren’t trading Keller. The offseason makes more sense. Heaney is on an expiring contract and should be traded, and he will not get any significant prospect back due to the contract. Falter would get much more in return. One he’s pitching better. Two Falter is controlled through 2029. He has much more value than you are leading on. The Pirates could easily fetch two top 20 prospects for Falter. He’s pitching very well this year. I’m not advocating for trading him, but he’s much more valuable than any of the rentals are and maybe even just as valuable as Keller. Keller’s main attraction is his locked in $ where Falter can still hit arb.
Also they have Burrows, Solomento, Oviedo, Chandler, Barco, Ashcraft, Harrington these kids need a shot. Until they’re given one they’ll forever be unproven. Give the kids the last 2 months and see what you have here then evaluate the rotation come November..
If they trade Keller I will always remind you how you said they wouldn’t.
Falter just as valuable as Keller? That is a heck of a hot take.
They been getting their shot and likely will continue to. Not looking good for some of them.
That’s fine remind me all you’d like I can admit when I’m wrong lol. I didn’t say he was as valuable as Keller. I said falter would get much more in return than Heaney. Which he would. Mendoza said falter wouldn’t fetch anything but he would more than Heaney a rental. Chandler got his shot? Barco? Harrington has had 2 games I wouldn’t write him off yet. Burrows has been pitching well as of late outside of the Minnesota game. The kids seem fine…
Why are you trading for a guy who was sent down to the minors for being terrible? It seems the Tigers are handing the AL crown to the Blue Jays.
he was sent to Indy to work on his control
Isn’t that what teams do when their good pitchers have control problems?
If by find control you meant find his off speed pitches, you’re right.
He couldn’t locate anything but his fastball at the start of the season. Opponents were sitting dead red because they knew that’s the only bullet in his gun. Since returning his off speed pitches have been as good as ever, making his fastball play up, too.
Overreaction theater from someone who doesn’t understand baseball
You mean like you?
Another good comeback.
2 I know what you are but what am I level comebacks in same article same day. Amazing
Not trading Adolis right now. Maybe Duran/Foscue and another minor
I feel bad for Foscue at this point. I think he could be a decent hitter if he got some playing time and has very little to learn at AAA. Kind of a bat without a home given his defensive limitations.
Well, if Bednar is in fact going to be offered by Pittsburgh, is Pittsburgh in the same boat as AZ is with the thinking that someone is going to overpay for Bednar. I would think yes, when you have 4 or 5 teams looking for the same player and he is at a need position Pittsburgh is holding a pair of aces in Santana and Bednar. Santana is the closer of the future and Pittsburgh can hold out for an overpayment, if not there now maybe there in the winter.
The 2nd round pick might have gotten more in NIl than the pirates offered
Sure he’s turned this season on and his career around. Making him one of the better closers. But losing teams don’t need closers, only winning teams. So a star closers on a losing team is as useless as an ashtray in a motorcycle. The pirates need major league ready hitters. And as much as I like Keller, they should trade him for a haul.
Ashtray in a motorcycle is a good one
I say Pirates should deal both Bednar and Santana if they can return two guys who between them can produce 4 WAR at positions of need (OF, C, 3B, SS).
Pirates can backfill the 8th and 9th innings with Mlod and Ashcraft, then bring back Holderman and promote Yean for 6/7 innings.
Yean has a high Whip in AAA.
Holderman may or may not ever be successful again.Remember who they gave up to get him.
Ashcraft and Carmen have proven well as long men and that is a very important position to have with the low pitch counts and the problems with the third time through the batting order with starting pitchers.
I remember Stan Belinda well.
He is the very reason why any team especially one who wants to be good needs a strong closer.
Trade Bednar for a couple of young potentially very good hitters from the Rays who could be available. Chris Morel is only 26 and the Rays haven’t figure out how to turn him around. Could play 3rd. or LF (although not very well). Add a young hitter like Curtis Mead (IF’er/OFer) who can’t get a good shot at playing or a prospect like Braden Taylor or arm in Dylan Lesko.
if the Rays haven’t figured out a way to turn one of their players around, what makes you think the Pirates can?
They can’t even turn their own players around
Precisely.. Change of scenery.
Yeah if Alika hasn’t taught them about trying to out develop the Rays they need smashed in the head with some bucco bricks.
Justin Foscue, Ezequiel Duran, and a quality prospect maybe? I’m sure I’m just overvaluing the two hitters but I really do think they’re both good prospects that are just victims of not being given enough playing time to prove themselves in MLB.
Totally trust Ben C to pull off a couple or three loser trades. Remember Josh Bell for Eddy Yean and Will Crowe? Starling Marte for Peguero and Brendan Malone? How about Jameson Taillon for five losers? Thats only for starters, he needs to be fkn fired, not making more stupid moves.
Yes should have gotten much more for a dh and a guy coming off 2nd tj
Ok Mrs Cherington
Wow you are so smart and witty. How you come up with that?
Not for you to worry.
You’re on fire!!!!!!!
So that’s the problem. Herringbone is doing business while “high”.
