Tigers Interested In Merrill Kelly, But Prioritizing Relief Pitching

By Mark Polishuk | July 29, 2025 at 2:17pm CDT

A once-dominant season for the Tigers has sprung some leaks, as the club has lost 13 of its last 16 games.  Detroit still has a nine-game lead in the AL Central so it’s far from panic mode just yet, but some help is clearly needed at the deadline, as evidenced by yesterday’s trade that brought Chris Paddack to the rotation in place of the injured Reese Olson.

Another rotation upgrade could be under consideration, as John Gambadoro of 98.7 FM Phoenix writes that “the Tigers like Merrill Kelly.”  The Diamondbacks right-hander is seen as likely to be moved by the deadline since Arizona has started moving other impending free agents like Josh Naylor, though it remains to be seen if the Tigers could emerge as an ardent suitor.  Gambadoro notes that the Tigers are primarily focused on adding relief pitching, which tracks with recent reports linking Detroit to such bullpen arms as Jhoan Duran, Griffin Jax, and David Bednar.

This isn’t to say that president of baseball operations Scott Harris isn’t exploring plenty of options, as the Tigers are also reportedly showing interest in third basemen like Ke’Bryan Hayes and another big Arizona trade chip (and former Tiger) Eugenio Suarez.  Detroit’s rotation also needed help even before Olson went down, as there’s still uncertainty over the fifth starter’s role behind Tarik Skubal, Jack Flaherty, Casey Mize, and now Paddack.

Adding Kelly would be a nice way to solidify the starting pitching situation, which in turn would indirectly also make things a little easier on Detroit’s struggling relief corps.  Kelly has bounced back well from an injury-shortened 2024 season by posting a 3.22 ERA over 128 2/3 innings for the D’Backs this year.  His 23.5% strikeout rate, 45% groundball rate, and 7.4% walk rate are all above league average, though a .247 BABIP has helped Kelly get away with allowing a lot of hard contact.

His higher 3.78 SIERA reflects that batted-ball luck, though Kelly has continued the good form he has shown for almost all of his seven-season run with the Diamondbacks.  Kelly also posted good numbers during Arizona’s NL pennant run in 2023, and this postseason experience would be helpful to a Tigers squad that surely has designs on making a deeper playoff run this October.  Only around $2.31MM remains on Kelly’s $7MM salary, making him an affordable fit for pretty much any contender.

Kelly discussed his situation with the Arizona Republic’s Nick Piecoro and other reporters on Saturday, following what could be the right-hander’s final start in a D’Backs uniform in 2025, but perhaps not ever.  Even if he is dealt before Thursday’s deadline, Kelly said he and his agent have both expressed interest in a reunion in free agency this winter.

“Obviously, I understand the nature of the beast and the business aspect of it,” Kelly said.  “The idea of, if I do get traded and if I do go somewhere…the chance to win is obviously in the forefront of my mind.  That all being said, I love being here. I have always loved being here. I would always be open to being a Snake moving forward.”

There are obviously big things brewing. This has been a slow day even in terms of DFA’s and IL placements.

The Tigers dont need a 5th starter they need a number 2 starter. Kelly makes a lot of sense for them. Perhaps they could pick up Miller or Beeks as well in the process.

Please tell us about all the #2 starters they are overlooking! I wasn’t aware any were trade fodder.

Kelly would be a solid number 2 starter. I just said that right? Beyond that not a whole lot out there as far as sure things go. Keller is more like a 3 but hes consistent. Alcantara and Gallen are riskier for sure.

Right now, I’ve got the rotation as:
          1) Skooby-doo
          2) Mize
          3) ?
          4) Flaherty
          5) Paddack
          6) Melton
          7) Montero

In the absence of trades we mostly get interests. The could mean a bunch of trades the day after tomorrow(Thursday) or none at all. Either way the hot stove fans will be going nuts.

I actually think there could be yet be some upside with Ke’Bryan Hayes. Yes, he’s 28 and has a poor track record to this point. But he makes a reasonable amount of contact and a reasonable amount of hard contact. He just doesn’t take enough walks or elevate the ball enough. Anyone who has seen him play could verify the fact that he is an excellent athlete. A coach who could convince him to make better swing decisions could probably coax at least league average production from him. I think it’s possible people under-rate how bad the Pirates are with hitters.

Overall, he would not be better than McKinstry. I would rather see Ibanez PH off the bench. If they want defense only, they already have Kreidler. Hayes would become a short side platoon player and defensive replacement. Tigers don’t need a disgruntled player in the clubhouse.

          @Don

I have to agree with brass and stymeed on this call. Hayes is probably the best defensive third baseman in the game, but he is just too painful to watch at the plate. There are clearly questions about his attitude as well.

Giving third base to McKinstry (glove and bat), Ibanez (glove) and even Mr. Keith (bat) works much better than Hayes, IMO. And, it saves the resources for the backend-relievers that we need even more than bats!

Tigers hit a rough patch, but show no signs of being a panickin…… At some point in the future they’ll have more pitchers healthy whether this season or the next. As a fan I’m still excited about the team. Best record in the A.L would have been nice, but just getting into the playoffs is what we all hoped for. I trust the team to do whats best for the team. GO TIGERS !

Just my opinion, but I think Detroit’s best WS hopes are still in it’s infancy. They need to extend Riley. They need to sign or trade Skubs, but EVERY effort must be made to keep him. If he leaves, Detroit will have to sign another Ace plus a great #2. The best is yet to come.

They either need to resign him or trade him and grab a boatload of MLB level talent that fills needs. In the offseason not now.

I like the idea of Merrill Kelly. And why mortgage the future on a rental like Geno. Why not sign Julio Daniel Rodriguez for a bat off the bench?

Tigers need to focus on shutdown bullpen arms. Hayes… no thank you!!! His bat is just another hole in the lineup. If the Tigers add a bat, they should get Kwan. He is the bat/on base guy Detroit needs in the lineup

One stop shopping for the Tigers by trading with the Pirates. Cruz, Keller, Santana and Bednar to the Tigers. Tigers send back Briceno, Liranzo, Jung, Meadows, Hamm, Petit.

Why trade two players we need to make the playoffs and get to the World Series? What is you promised return for them? Are you talking about Dalton Rushing, contribute now type player, or Joendry Vargas, contribute 3-5 years from now type players? Who would they get back for those players, who fills their spots and why does the trade make them better?

Remember how Avila would sit on his hands because we were sniffing being close?

Stick to the plan. Both those guys are FA’s at the end of the year and he should be offloading blocked/middling prospects.

You could get a haul of future guys. Hope 2027, Ferris, Mayfield 28 Bateman 28

We can win anyways. No guarantee on WS appearance and THIS OPPORTUNITY IS NOW.

Flaherty has an option. If the trade vets and have replacements thst make them better now then I’m all for it. They don’t need more prospects. They aren’t rebuilding. Those two players chose to cone to Detroit as free agents. Dance with the one that brought you.

Never time to stop building. Why, does everyone put it in a yes or no, black or white category?
Trading Torres and Flaherty is a great opportunity and an unusual one Harris created. If he doesn’t take advantage of it, he loses a lot of respect from me.

Being in first place should.not.change things.

IF Torres or Flaherty when on the DL, would you still expect the Tigers to win?

          I would.

Do you HONESTY think Flaherty is going g.to exercise that option unless he is injured?
          Come on…
Think Skubal.will be here 2 years from now?

          Never time to.stop.

Hayes has major upside—get him for everyday 3B, shore up that ‘pen, get another SP, put Javy back in CF, bring up McGonigle for everyday SS, and find an everyday spot for Wenceel.
