The Red Sox are among a number of teams with interest in Pirates right-hander Mitch Keller, according to a report from Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Hiles mentions the Yankees, Mets, and Cubs as being among the other teams that have reached out to the Pirates about Keller, though each of those clubs has previously been connected to the righty this summer.
It should be of little surprise that Boston would have interest in Keller’s services. The 2023 All-Star is in the midst of a career season with the Pirates. He’s posted a 3.69 ERA in 22 starts with a 3.44 FIP. Keller’s strikeout rate (18.8%) is down substantial from previous seasons, which could be a cause for concern, but his 6.6% barrel rate is the lowest of his career and he’s limited his walks to a tidy 6.2%, also a career low. More advanced metrics are skeptical of Keller’s ability to continue producing at this rate with such a low strikeout rate, however; the right-hander’s 4.21 SIERA is the 18th-weakest figure among the league’s 59 qualified starters this year. That suggests he may profile more as a back-of-the-rotation starter than the playoff-caliber #2 his surface-level numbers this year might otherwise make him out to be.
Despite those concerns, Keller remains an attractive trade target. He’s been fairly durable in recent years, with the league’s 12th-highest innings total since 2022, and at just 29 years old he’ll remain in his prime for a few more seasons. With three more years of team control after this one after he signed an extension with the Pirates last year, Keller would be a fixture of an acquiring club’s rotation for years to come. That should be especially attractive to the Red Sox, who could lose both Lucas Giolito and Walker Buehler to free agency this winter, though Giolito’s deal has a 2026 option. Either way, they will need reliable arms to fill out the remainder of their rotation alongside Garrett Crochet and Brayan Bello. He should be attractive to a number of other teams as well; in addition to the clubs mentioned above, Keller has also been connected to the Blue Jays.
Despite that solid base of teams Keller is drawing interest from, however, Hiles emphasizes that there’s no guarantee he’ll actually be traded this summer. Hiles reports that the Pirates are “comfortable” holding onto Keller if their “steep” asking price isn’t met, and Hiles adds that Pittsburgh could revisit dealing Keller in the offseason, when it could be easier to pry a hitter already in the majors away from interested clubs. That seems likely to be true of the Red Sox, at least. Boston outfielder Jarren Duran has been the frequent subject of trade speculation in recent weeks due to the club’s logjam of talent in the outfield, but the latest signals point to the club holding onto him this summer and re-evaluating over the winter.
Duran, an above-average everyday player controlled through the end of the 2028 season, is the exact sort of player the Pirates are surely dreaming of acquiring. Speculatively speaking, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Pirates are holding out for a controllable hitter of that caliber and ultimately decide to keep Keller in the fold in order to try again this winter if that asking price isn’t met. Of course, that strategy would run the risk of interested clubs pivoting elsewhere once free agency opens up additional options. With roughly $56MM left on his deal after the 2025 season, Keller is more expensive financially than the typical trade target. That could leave his market to be more impacted by free agency than the average trade piece, at least during the offseason. Dylan Cease, Zac Gallen, Framber Valdez, and Brandon Woodruff are among the many intriguing starting pitchers who figure to be available this winter, and some teams would likely prefer to pay for one of those arms rather than surrendering both budget space and talent to land Keller in the winter.
Interestingly enough, I find all of this interest very interesting. It’ll be interesting to see what happens at the deadline. That is, if teams in contention are truly interested in their alleged interests.
Cow – Why is interest income on savings accounts taxable, but interest paid on credit cards is no longer tax deductible ever since the Tax Reform Act of 1986? Is it because of Buckner?
That’s interesting.
Yes, fever they tax my check when I receive my money from work.
Then they tax my money which has been taxed already, when I buy something with my already taxed money.
Well, you know what they say, a fool, and his money are soon partying.
Gary – One year I won a little over $600 on the Derby, but I lost more than $600 that year on other races.
The state taxed me on the $600 win, but didn’t allow me to deduct any of the $600+ in losses.
We should indeed be partying …. we need another Tea Party.
BTW – In other countries like Canada, zero tax on gambling winnings no matter how large. That’s because they correctly realize gambling winnings is not income, as it’s not earned.
The Tax Reform Act of 1986 figured prominently in my job at the time. Insurance for accountants went through the roof partly due to TRA86.
Buckner was essentially meaningless in the Red Sox melt down. Almost a footnote. Oh yeah, after a series of screw ups, the ball went under Buckner’s glove.
According to unnamed sources speaking on condition of anonymity, everyone is interested in everything.
Red Sox need a lot more than Keller.
They need another strong reliever to compensate for Cora’s inept bullpen management.
They need a catcher that can hit and not get interference called on him every week.
They need a first baseman that can hit with RISP or at least advance runners.
And they need to improve their coaching staff.
LoL. Who’s not interested in Keller or anyone else from the Pirates staff. It’s now or never for the Mets. Empty the farm for Skenes. It’s time to take down Los Angeles.
fan – We have a profound saying in Boston ….. “Beat LA”.
Theman needs to get in here and tell you not so nicely how Skenes isn’t available.
You’re dreaming. Skenes ain’t going anywhere for a couple of years at the very least.
Fever,
Cora is your guy for the foreseeable future, much like Boone with the Yankees…
Acoss – One more second half collapse and I think Cora might not be manager anymore.
They aren’t gonna scapegoat Breslow after just 2 years.
Fpg – if the FO botches another trade deadline, I don’t see Cora getting fired.
Now if they actually add pieces and there’s a collapse? Maybe.
But Keller is going to be expensive, and honestly wouldn’t be worth it. Do I think he’d be an upgrade to the current rotation? Yes, but I think PIT will want top of the rotation money, and he’s like a tick below that.
I’m worried about the pitching, but if they don’t find a good 1B and backup C, the offense will become a bigger issue than the pitching.
It’s a real dick move to bench a guy hitting .300 and move your gold glove CF to 2nd base.
I saw that the other day, Rafaella at second base, and that was crap with how good Romy Gonzalez has played this year.
You sit him right next to your other whipping boy, Rob Refsnyder.
miller – I don’t necessarily disagree, but who was the opposing pitcher at the time?
I ask because Romy does suck against RHP, to the tune of a .564 career OPS.
Fever,
I’d assume you guys would want Varitek to be the new manager, yes? That seems to be who gets the most love for him to take over one day.
you’re right, his righty split isn’t that good, Im sure it was a righty. Platoons all over all the diamond.
Acoss – Yes, that would be ideal.
You know who my second choice would be?
Someone you’re very familiar with …. David Ross.
Thoughts?
Fever,
Ross might do better a second time around. He was too green when he took over after Joe Maddon.
Acoss – Yes managers are just like players, they often get better over time. Great managers like Torre and Tito had rough starts and then had much success with new teams.
here’s an idea, how about Romy platoons for Trevor Story against lefties and Mayer platoons for Trevor Story against righties?
Pirates are sure to screw up another trade deadline.
Why? When did they screw up a deadline?
Fever- I don’t think Keller will be worth what they would need to pay for him. If they are going to go for a controllable pitcher, find someone who fits in the number 2 spot not 3 or 4.
I think Keller is a low 2 high 3, have to look at Sonny Gray’s deal – 3 yr / 75M for his age 35 to age 37 seasons.
You’re going to get Keller for his age 30 to 32 seasons at 3/55M – he has a good contract and is in his prime.
Keller and Sonny Gray are very similar pitchers.
I am concerned that Keller’s strikeout rate is on the decline. That is not usually a good sign, so makes me hesitant of giving up too much for him.
Hiles? Just say no, he is only strumming up his own name for publicity.
I don’t necessarily blame him. MLBTR keeps writing up a new story for each team he mentions in one piece so it looks like he is trying to drum up his own publicity when in reality his story which mentions six or seven teams and their interest gets linked seven times for each team mentioned.
I just come straight to comment section. What’s there to read good baseball teams looking to add good pitcher. Any team who needs a pitcher and wants to win is interested. And they are more willing to trade MLB players when they aren’t in the stretch run of a pennant chase.
The American League is weak this year and they’re for the taking. Trade any prospect not named Tolle in the right deals. Wouldn’t mind seeing Keller, Bednar, and O’hearn that would go a long way for Bostons post season chances. I think Boston has the prospect capital to get this done so let’s do it.
Bruin – So you’re saying add payroll even if it pushes the Red Sox CBT amount over the threshold?
Yeah I’ll believe it when I see it.
Yup, I would if they can get it done. I think they are still over the amount this year even after the Devers trade they should be able to add the salary not a problem.
Bruin – According to Spotrac the Sox are $3.8M under the threshold.
But of course I’m with you, I always want to win. I have zero interest in greedy owners saving a few bucks.
FPG- as usual the smartest guys in the room will get together and manage to screw this up.
The AL is up for grabs (and that includes the Kittens in Detroit). I dont care about bringing in pure rentals. As a matter of fact they may end up being cheaper than searching for someone with control. Look at what Seattle gave up for Naylor, not a whole lot.
The kids are already here, and we know theyre not trading Campbell. Everyone else should be on the table.
My preferred target is Alcantara. But, him (and SP) aside, the Sox need a shutdown reliever, and should pay for it.
I’m not trading Tolle either Sad but every other prospect is on the table. Imo the Red Sox haven’t had a pitching prospect like this since Clemens. He’s improving so fast it’s scary.
Sad – I think the best SP’s will be traded after the season. I would go all out for Ryan or Skubal.
Bruin – Agreed, scary as in how did he increase his velo so dramatically and so fast? Seems like a TJS waiting to happen.
I think Password is the most likely prospect to get traded.
That’s the beautiful thing about the dude he is a mountain of a man his extension is unreal approaching 8 feet at times. TJS can be in any pitchers future literally any pitcher so that doesn’t he’s a big talented dude that’s secondaries are coming quick wouldn’t shock me if next year he’s throwing a nasty sweeper as well.
I don’t think it’s as weak as you are implying it is…
The Red Sox are nutz if they don’t get a SP like Keller. Why hold onto Duran? Sheer stupidity. They have excess and he’s not going to be worth more this winter or next year.
I doubt the Pirates would take Duran in the trade for Keller. Duran is going to get a pay bump in 2026 and Bob Nutting don’t like that.
Mitch Keller is getting a pay bump as well. Cruz is getting a pay bump.
Keller for Duran doesn’t fit Nutting’s profile. Cruz will get a bump but losing Pham will easily cover that cost.
Duran would definitely fit Nuttings profile. He would slide into LF for the next 2 years
Beaver – They don’t have excess if Mayer is out the rest of the season or if Bregman reinjures himself. Rafaela needs to play 2B in either situation.
There has to be a way Breslow can convince Cherington to trade Keller to the Sox for David Hamilton…
Rsox – lol
Rsox – Hamilton is starting tonight and batting ahead of Rafaela who has been pushed back into the 9th spot.
Keller would be great, but I wouldn’t want to subtract from the ML roster. I’d guess that makes it a no-go.
I have this feeling we’re going to spend the next couple weeks watching this team circle the drain and fall out of contention. After last night’s game, my optimism is waning. I went to bed as soon as the tarps came out then saw the score this morning. They are inventing ways to lose games.
Better Mitch Keller than Helen Keller, more apt to find the strike zone than the circus performers the Sox routinely trot out
You made one sentence with mutiple confusing ideas so I am just going to imply that you’re saying Helen Keller is better than the relievers we have now.
If the Pirates make a trade with the Red Sox one would think that Tristan Casas would be a name likely included as part of a deal.
Garcia and Casas would get that done. I’d prefer Abreu over Garcia but I’m just being greedy.
Sneak Henry Davis into the mix if for no other reason than to get him some playing time. He’s being horribly mismanaged.
Nope, his swing is just atrocious. Davis destroyed minor league pitchers and even hit two dingers off of Ohtani, but ever since that game he hasn’t hit anything. Like Austin Hedges bad. But at least he improved his D.
Henry Davis is Skenes’ personal catcher, he’s not going anywhere and besides he plays more than Bart does
Catchers was supposed to be a strength this year and both have underperformed at the plate
He’s solid. I’d take him. Not sure what his contract is though.
I’d be interested in seeing a trade revolve around Keller for Duran. Not sure what else needs to be included (by either team) to make it digestible.
Cherington isn’t going to just give Keller away.
In fact he probably won’t get traded ar all unless an interested team overwhelms Cherington
Watch Breslow back up the truck for Jared Jones…
Garcia, Early as a headline seems more than fair for the Sox +/-
Duran or nothing
I don’t think the Pirates would be very interested in a Duran/Keller swap. I think they’d be looking for younger and more controllable pieces that fit their timeline of when they could possibly be contending again. Which is doubtful to be next season.
The pirates would absolutely take Duran for Keller. Duran would be the everyday LF and bat lead off. Would love to get a couple other hitters maybe Boston throwing in a hurt 1st baseman
I watched Keller last only 2 innings against the SF Giants last night and was not impressed. They don’t have a particularly great offense. I wouldn’t give up much for Keller.
I hope the Pirates don’t move Keller but if they do it has to be an overpay on position players or top prospects who are close!
Move Heaney, and Falter to make room for Bubba! Jared Jones will be back mid season and Oviedo before that.
