Everything coming out of St. Louis suggests that the Cardinals are at a major pivot point for the franchise. They are entering what could be a multi-year rebuild period as they focus on player development more than short-term contention. That has been the case for about a year already but all signs suggest the club will be leaning harder in that direction. Katie Woo of The Athletic reports that the ownership will now be more willing to eat money in trades, in order to extract greater returns.
That reporting aligns with comments this week from Chaim Bloom, the new president of baseball operations. “As far as cash being a lever on the trade front, that should never be off the table,” he said, per Woo. “Obviously, you’d prefer not to do that, but you could end up in a situation where adding cash to make a preferred deal work just makes sense.”
Between Bloom’s comments and Woo’s reporting about ownership, it seems the franchise is aligned. That should only add to the sense that highly-paid players like Nolan Arenado and Sonny Gray are more likely to be moved this offseason than they were last winter.
A year ago, the Cards made it clear that they were beginning this reset period. That initially made it seem likely that veteran players like Arenado, Gray and Willson Contreras could be logical trade candidates. However, Gray and Contreras quickly indicated that they wanted to stay in St. Louis. Arenado was a bit more open to a trade but had a narrow list of five clubs he considered acceptable landing spots and ultimately wasn’t traded.
The club’s rebuilding plans now seem to be more firmly in place and both Arenado and Gray have publicly expressed a greater willingness to waive their no-trade clauses this time around. Contreras seems less interested in leaving but didn’t completely discount the possibility.
That’s a good start for the Cardinals but eating money will be helpful to getting deals done. Gray is still a good pitcher and just wrapped a solid season, middling earned run average notwithstanding. Though he allowed 4.28 earned runs per nine over 180 2/3 innings, his .329 batting average on balls in play probably inflated that a bit. His 26.7% strikeout rate, 5% walk rate and 43.9% ground ball rate were all strong marks. ERA estimators like his 3.39 FIP and 3.29 SIERA suggest he was more his old self than the ERA itself would indicate.
Even if clubs are willing to overlook the ERA, the contract is an obstacle. His three-year, $75MM deal with the Cardinals was heavily backloaded. He made just $10MM in 2024 and $25MM this year. He’ll then make $35MM next year, followed by a $5MM buyout on a $30MM club option. If that option is picked up, Gray can then opt out.
At this point, there is just one more guaranteed season left on the deal but with $40MM still to be paid out. The option doesn’t really add any extra upside because of that opt-out. Despite Gray’s talents, $40MM for one year of a pitcher is a lot. That kind of average annual value has been reserved for ace-type pitchers. Even if it were a fair price for Gray’s services, eating more money to extract more prospect capital is a sensible tactic for a club focused on the long term.
Arenado is going to make $27MM next year, though the Rockies are going to pay $5MM of that and $6MM is deferred. He’ll then make $15MM in 2027. That works out to less than $20MM annually but his stock is down after some rough years at the plate. He hit just .237/.289/.377 for a wRC+ of 84 this year and was barely above league average in the prior two campaigns. He still gets good grades for his glovework but isn’t the MVP candidate he once was.
Other teams will have different valuations of what they expect from him going forward, but as mentioned with Gray, any money that the Cardinals are willing to eat should increase what teams are willing to give up.
With Contreras, as mentioned, a trade seems less likely before even considering the money but it could happen. He is still owed $41.5MM over the next two years. That’s an $18MM salary next year, $18.5MM in 2027, and then a $5MM buyout on a $17.5MM club option for 2028.
He has been moved from the catcher position to first base. He got decent grades for his glovework there this year, getting credit for six Outs Above Average, while Defensive Runs Saved had him just below par at -1. The bat is still strong, as he hit .257/.344/.447 this year for a 124 wRC+. Those numbers are all close to his career marks, where he has a .258/.352/.459 batting line and 122 wRC+.
Though he’s going into his age-34 season, the deal isn’t bad. Christian Walker just got $60MM over three years from the Astros going into his age-34 campaign. But even if the Contreras deal isn’t underwater, other teams may not give up much for it unless the Cards pay it down somewhat.
Last winter, the Cards seemed to be more motivated by salary relief. Arenado was still owed roughly $60MM over three years when they lined up a trade with the Astros. Arenado vetoed that deal but reporting indicated the Cards were only going to eat about $5MM per season, leaving the Astros on the hook for about $45MM. It’s unknown what the Cards were going to receive in that trade but is was likely going to be a salary dump deal. Cardinals chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. later said they would have to find cuts elsewhere if they didn’t move Arenado, though that didn’t really end up happening.
Per RosterResource, the Cardinals had a $144MM payroll in 2025. Thanks to some trades and some expiring contracts, they are projected for just $75MM next year. Arbitration salaries for players like Brendan Donovan and Lars Nootbaar could push that up but those players are themselves candidates to be traded this winter. Perhaps that lighter payroll is what opened the path for the Cards to worry less about cost savings this time, which could increase their chances of adding meaning young talent to their pipeline.
There will be non-payroll expenditures, however. Woo reports that the club is planning to make more investments in the fields of analytics, player development and scouting. There’s also some uncertainty with the club’s TV deal. The Cards reached a new agreement with Main Street Sports, formerly known as Diamond Sports Group, to be on the FanDuel Sports Network in 2025. Woo writes that the deal contains option provisions after each season. She says that no major shake-up is expected but that some renegotiations could take place.

WC could be a 1b option for SD. The question has to be flexible – better the prospect more money paid and vice versa. Maybe SD hands over 2 – 3 middle prospects for only a little money paid?
Seems like plenty of teams would beat that offer. Contreras can really hit.
Def think other teams can offer some higher prospects but it’s just 2 years and then with higher prospects, paying more money. ST Louis just has to weigh its options as to which way to go. If it’s really about saving money then the less they had to chip in the better.
I dont think the Padres have big money to spend. And if the Cardinals pay a big part of his salary i dont know if they Padres have enough young talent. Mayfield and Schoolcraft would certainly be of interest to the Cardinals.
The Padres have enough prospects to get Contreras with all the money paid. A good 1B not an elite one.
Bloom has had 2 years to take a thorough audit of the team’s infrastructure and likely has already started rebuilding structures, but that could take 5 or more years to complete, so in the meantime he’ll sell-off what he can in an attempt to build-up the farm and save money for the infrastructure rebuild.
The team is in a tough spot with MKE poised to win indefinitely with their controlled young talent, strong infrastructure and monster farm system, the Cubs still mostly prime-aged core and payroll, the Reds young talent and strong rotation and even Pittsburgh with some hope because of their young pitching.
Bloom comes from Tampa so he knows he needs to play the long-game so patience Cardinals fans, the pain of the next few years should have a nice payoff eventually.
Just seeing “Chaim Bloom’s name in print as the Cardinals President of Baseball Operations” is a Fantastic step forward instead of Seeing John Mozeliak’s name!!!!
(Even though Bloom did stick with Marmol as 2026 manager —— Ugh!!!)
It Makes Cardinals Nation have a small sense of relief that “Things could possibly progressively get Better instead of Worse !!!! ——— that is “IF” the DeWitts give him a Free Reign and the payroll to work with!!!!
This is the way Chaim
Buffett – I hope you realize the Cards are looking at a 5-year drought.
On behalf of Red Sox Nation …. been there, done that.
FPG, you know better than that. The one division in baseball that’ll lend it to a rebuild team being good quickly it’s the NLC.
The NLC had the top farm systems in 2024 and surprise is BY FAR the best division in MLB in 2025. The Cardinals would have a quicker rebuild in literally any other division in MLB lol.
mrk – I dunno, the division is changing. The Cubs and Brewers have been pretty darn good and the Reds are up and coming.
Not sure the NLC is by far the best division.
The ALE had a better +- this year despite the Brewers top mark. And they have some well regarded farm systems (Yankees excluded) as well. Plus a clear financial advantage (or at least willingness to spend) as well
NLC had more total wins than any other division in baseball and 3 playoff teams including the #1 seed.
@Jeremy320 the ALE has 8 more wins than the NLC in 2025 (429 to 421).
NLC had the #1, #4 & #6 seeds in the NLC while the ALE has the #1, #4 & #5 seeds in the AL.
No matter how you cut it, the ALE was the best division in baseball. Which division will be better going forward is always open for debate and NLC certainly does have some good prospects.
@FPG – It’s the easiest because it doesn’t have a club spending 400M$. Very little depth amongst the teams in the division, a single or two injuries could devastate one of the current contenders and STL would be right back in it with ~85 wins.
It won’t take 5 yrs. My prediction is 3 yrs tops
Big – Only if ownership is willing to spend.
5 year drought?
Hold my beer – Arte Moreno
It’s less a “willingness” and more the reality of the situation. High priced and/or underwater contracts aren’t movable without cash involved
Rsox – Not necessarily true, they can always attach young talent to the underwater contracts.
Remember Bloom taking on JBJ’s ridiculous contract because of the two prospects that came with him? We know what Hamilton is NOT doing …. what’s Binelas doing? Oh yeah that’s right, they released him in May.
I’m kind of guessing that had more to do with getting rid of Hunter Renfroe more than anything else. But you are correct though that would be counter productive to what the Cardinals are trying to do which is rebuild the farm
FPG yeah I mean that’s always a theoretically viable approach in the abstract but how often does it really happen? From the other side if the equation to your example there’s the inherent risk of giving up a player with the majority or entirety of their pre-fa cost controlled window and losing out on major surplus value to save relatively insignificant present value in cash. In the cards’ situation where they are committing to some form of rebuild and are projected to shed a substantial amount of payroll in the next year or two, I’d say it’s generally preferable to send cash to retain and add prospects.
Pete – Maybe I’m not following, but isn’t taking on an underwater contract along with prospects the same thing as sending cash to add prospects?
If you’re not going to be in contention anyway, it’s better to take back an underwater contract than to send cash directly. At least the overpaid player you’re taking back is plugging a roster hole in the meantime. Plus that player may play his way back into some minimal trade value in his own right. Since you’re eating money on trades these days anyway, you may be able to make 2 trades instead of 1 for the same sunk cash.
It also keeps the MLB payroll hounds off of a team’s back.
mohoney – Good post, but one thing to keep in mind is the underwater contract means someone else has to be removed from the roster and could be potentially exposed in the Rule 5.
That would be ineffectual in what the club is attempting to do: add young talent.
100% correct. Contreras can be moved, but Gray and Arenado are under-water. They either attach money or prospects. There is no 3rd way. Every year we hear trade rumors ‘if the price is right’, when the chief problem is that there is no market.
If Walker Buehler can get $21m coming off surgery Gray at $35m + $5m buyout in 2027 is not massively underwater.
Unless they pay the whole salary except maybe $5 million no one is trading for washed up Arenado and greatly overpaid gray or trading anything of value.
I wouldn’t necessarily agree with that. If Arenado didn’t have a no trade I think he certainly would have been moved to one of the 3,4 teams who needed a 3b.
The no trade clause is a bigger issue for the cardinals because he only wants to go to 5 teams and most of them didn’t have any interest in him.
I think at 10 million there might be a team would be interested in his glove.
Does this mean the “Small market” cardinals will stop getting free draft picks from the league for no reason?
Tink Hence was their last free pick a few years ago.
I tink you’re right.
They shouldn’t have had the pick then either.
Tink Hence can’t stay healthy. He had Great potential, but with all of the injuries he’s had to his arm, he’s already damaged goods!!!
So damaged —- he’ll probable just always be a minor league star who’s blown out his arm one too many times and will never make a dent with the big club !!!!
On the open market, is…
Arenado worth 2/$37M with $6M deferred?
Gray at 1/$40M?
Contreras at 2/$41.5M?
Whatever you think Arenado and Gray can sign for, Bloom will have to pay that difference. Contreras may be the only one among them who can get some solid prospects in a trade provided Bloom also includes a ton of cash.
Bingo. A theoretical Gray return will bring more than Arenado’s, too. (Variable monies permitted)
Cards will get players in return that will top those stats of Nado(love the guy). That will give more bang for the buck.
Say we get 3 players in return for Nolan. 2 of them pan out to have above average WAR in 2-3 years.
So the Cards really never eat that left over salary.
You won’t get players back unless the Cards cut some very large checks. Just to trade them for me, for example, will cost the Cards maybe $18M for Arenado and maybe $20M for Gray.
Give me Arenado, Walker, and Weatherolt. I’ll pay all of Arenado’s contract (and release him in mid-May if he isn’t an all-Star). That’s where they can start if they really want to dump his contract
They’d rather keep his contract and not get anything than trade Wetherholt for nothing but cash relief
As overpaid as Arenado is, it appears trading him isn’t about dumping his salary. They’re willing to pay down against what he’s owed in order to get some decent return in prospects. They want to rebuild, and to do that means stocking the farm. They want to acquire prospects not trade them.
Wetherholt will be a cardinal for years to come.
Anytime I read things like that I see Mark Prior.
The DeWitts haven’t given 9 figures to anyone without prior affiliation to the team(Holliday, Goldy, etc were all part of the team before their extensions/re-signing) To never be in on the top free agents is the ultimate why to where they’re at in today’s game. They only obtained Nado and Goldy bc they were free in terms of the return packages.
Not to mention once MLB axed the extreme lower levels and Covid happened, they stopped putting as much $$ into the scouting and development stages.
06 and 11 ultimately hurt the team now bc they thought they could get by with a squeak in playoff team that may get lucky over a championship caliber product. They fire Matheny bc he wasnt winning but now Marmol has the world’s longest leash. Shame. Ever since they decided to not give Oquendo the managerial job after 2011, they cursed themselves.
How can cardinals fans like yourself see the brewers run a model franchise never signing free agents and say the reason why the cardinals aren’t winning is because lack of high end free agents?
Yeah, that’s such a basic excuse that couldn’t be further from the truth. The Cardinals have made significant offers to FAs and lost out. A lot of teams compete without major FA signings. We will never be the dodgers, fans need to accept that.
@fostan
I know we won’t be the dodgers but it is frustrating getting out-bided by teams by a few million, it be different if the offers were stupid overpays.
You don’t know what the offers are. Even when the public does hear about some free agent offers some of the info isn’t correct. Mets got Soto this past winter and Yankees fans thought it was only a couple million. When you factor in the opt out he got and the 20 tickets behind home plate among other things it’s going to push the deal to over 800 million.
“IF” John Mozeliak had done his Job in a correct, professional manner and “IF” the Cardinals Owners had done their job of monitoring Mozeliak’s actions, inactions and waist of their money on “Low Hanging Fruit” & “Lightning in a Bottle” type of Players ….. this Cardinals rebuild of this Organization would never have had to happen!!!
There is absolutely “No Excuse” but negligence on the part of both Mozeliak and the owners for
Allowing this Historic Franchise to be in the current position it is in.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals Nation —- The DeWitts, as the principle owners, are not the type that will spend the money” that needs to be spent to right this sinking ship!!!
“IF” they were —— they would have NEVER allowed John Mozeliak to insert his money waisting philosophies of the wishful thinking of acquiring players through the “Low Hanging Fruit” method.
As other teams had found out the hard way ——. That method has never worked and has been the ruin and downfall of those organizations!!!
No has 3 losing seasons. 3!
SMH
Haters gonna hate
3 losing records this century, and still folks still losing their schitt. But every team has fans like this.
Bootlicking JoeBrady.
If they had invested in a couple starters last offseason, they probably would have made the playoffs. The team doesn’t need a rebuild. They need two starters a bullpen guy and a replacement for Jordan Walker. They have the cap space and assets to get all that but they won’t. Instead Dewitt in his best tone deaf way said he’ll offer deals on cheap beer at the stadium to keep fans happy.
Cheap beer at the ballpark was the first thing Moreno did when he bought the Angels. Everyone thought he was going to be a great owner at that point. The cheap beer might get them drunk, but they aren’t happy.
Contreras wants to catch next year, the Rays say they are looking for that, might get a pitching prospect or two for him.
Herrera is going back to catching next year as well.
no more left field
You see the Rays dropping 20 to 25% of their payroll on one player and trading away a good pitching prospect or two?
Arenado could make sense for the Rangers, Tigers or Mariners assuming hes open to going to those teams. Cardinals could use either Jung or Williamson. The Cardinals do not have a long term 3b unless that Baez guy works out. They definitely dont have a short term one Gorman is not good enough.
Gray i could see going to the Braves because I think he would want to play there. Perhaps they could use Donovan as well. Waldrep is definitely a guy the Cardinals could use.
Tigers don’t need him. They have guys ready to graduate from AAA and McKinstry in the short term
King. Of. Cards
Gray i could see going to the Braves because I think he would want to play there. Perhaps they could use Donovan as well. Waldrep is definitely a guy the Cardinals could use.
==========================
Why would the Braves want to swap one SP for another? And I seriously doubt you have the farm to obtain him.
Gray gives them a more reliable presence. And the Braves have lots of young pitching coming. And of course they would get Donovan too.
Not happening. Let’s say Donavan is worth 3 WAR * 2 and Gray is worth 3 * 1, both generous. So StL gives up 9 WAR for $40M.
That’s not nearly enough for 5 years of a good young SP who looks like a #2.
Waldrep is risky. Gray and Donovan are not. And where are you getting 40 million from? The Cardinals can pay Gray’s salary like the article suggests. And Waldrep is under control for 6 years not 5.
Waldrep is risky, but so are 36 year old SPs. IRT the service time, I got it from Baseball reference. And again according to BR, 2027 is a mutual option. That never works.
In any case, unless Waldrep is hurt, why would Atlanta trade 5 years of Waldrep for one year of Gray? Especially given that Donavan’s value is at 2nd, where the Braves already have Albies.
I don’t think there is a chance of that trade happening.
Gray is very consistent and his FIP suggests hes pitching great still.
I told you already its 6 years of Waldrep not 5. Listen and learn please.
Donovan value is not at 2b. Its not that hes particularly good at defense at all its just that he can be moved around if guys get hurt. Allies has been hurt recently. So has Riley. But if everyone was healthy Donovan would be the DH most likely.
Trade makes sense for both sides. Its a hypothetical trade suggested in early October. Of course its not likely to happen. But to act like its unfair shows your ignorance.
The Braves are not trading Waldrep for Sonny Gray. Waldrep is controlled for like 4 or 5 more years, is cheap, and just made mechanical adjustments where he was phenomenal down the stretch and his upside is light years above Gray’s and their floors are almost equivalent. Take off the Cardinal red colored glasses for a second. The Braves would hang up the phone before Bloom even finished his sentence
Even if you add in Donovan, Gray has negative trade value. So you’re suggesting Waldrep and all those years of control, would be worth Donovan playing DH and occasionally a utility infielder? Seriously? Cmon man. That’s literally never going to happen.
Donovan, Gray and money.
Donovan plays 2b, 3b and corner outfield. Think about the 2025 Braves and how many games the 2b, 3b and corner outfielders were all healthy at the same time. Or in Profars case on the field. Donovan would have been extremely valuable.
Waldrep is controlled for 6 years. This is the third time I have said that. Listen.
Their floors are equivelant?? Lol no. Gray is at worst a number 3. Waldrep at worst is a pen arm. He’s no sure thing.
That’s just not enough. Not even close. Waldrep is a potential ace and pitched like it down the stretch. And you think the Braves are going to give up 6 years of Waldrep for 1 Year of Sonny Gray and 3 years of Donovan and a little cash? What if Donovan gets hurt? They will have given up a cheap potential ace with 6 years of control for a utility player and 1 year of an aging starter with an underwater contract. There is literally zero chance that trade happens
Gray at worst gets injured at 35 years old and only pitches 12 innings.
2 years of Donovan not 3. Good gosh man.
Waldrep is a potential ace. But hes also a potential nobody. He has health concerns. What if he gets hurt? Then the Cardinals gave up 2 guys for a nobody.
You are clueless.
Gray has made at least 22 starts every year except the covid year his entire career.
He might get hit by lightning tomorrow. But odds are hes going to pitch a lot of innings and pitch well. Waldrep is a complete unknown
Your cardinals bias is breathtaking. You agree that Waldrep is potential ace and think it’s fair for the Braves to trade him, with 6 years of control, the Cardinals for a 35 year old starter with negative trade value and a utility player? And I’m the one that’s clueless?
Waldrep is a potential ace. He’s also a potential 7th inning guy.
Gray doesnt have negative trade value if the Cardinals pay his salary LIKE THE ARTICLE SUGGESTS.
Donovan is a utility player? Yeah thats one way to word it. And you say I have a bias????
Did you see how quickly Aaron Nola fell off a cliff this year? There’s a 1,000 guys that have similar stories. Anthopolous barely ever signs anyone over 30 years old and you think he’s gonna trade Waldrep for Sonny Gray and Brendan Donovan? lol
You yourself called him a DH who could back up Riley and Albies. That’s the definition of a utility player. And if you pay down Gray’s contract ti the point someone will actually take it on doesn’t mean you’re going to get back a potential ace with 6 years of control. Am I in bizarro world?
What the heck does Aaron Nola have to do with anything?
Gray has been as consistent as it gets with performance and health. And he lives only a few hours away from Atlanta.
The Braves dont have enough money to round out their roster and fill their holes. They need to make a trade or 2. Spencer Strider would be interesting but I dont know if he fits the Cardinals timeliness for competing again.
Donovan plays everyday. And thats not the definition of a utility player. To use the term utility player is weird and makes it look like you are trying to discredit him. Which again is weird.
The Cardinals are looking for potential. If the Braves dont want to trade their potential then so be it. But their window is closing.
Who says the Braves don’t have money? They just reset their luxury tax status after consistently sitting in the top 7ish payrolls in baseball. They’re getting Morton, Ozuna and Iglesias’ contracts off the books. Yes some guys current under contract are getting raises, but they’re not so desperate for money to just give away Strider or Waldrep. And you really can’t figure out how Nola might be relevant here? Really?
And if the Braves were worried about money, why the hell would they give up 6 years of control of a guy with Waldrep’s upside when he’s making pennies on the dollar? You’re talking out of both sides of your mouth
Iglesias isnt making squat. And their players are due for numerous raises. Look it up chief. The Braves have holes to fill and they really dont have the money to fill all of them.
Aren’t you a Cubs fan?
Iglesias was making $16 million as a relief pitcher this year. You’re just wrong
The Braves have Schwellenbach. They have Ritchie who will be ready mod 2026. Caminiti is on the way. Shawver is coming back in 2027. They have a ton of high upside pitching they dont need all of it. By the time Gray moves on they have guys to replace him. And Donovan will be massively underpaid for 2 years so they save money that way.
Its almost like I thought this over already.
I thought you were talking about Jose Iglesias.
The need a closer goofball. They gotta replace him. How are they gonna do that and save money still?
They’re also coming a season where literally 5 of their opening day starting pitchers ended up on the 60-day IL. Neither Ritchie or Caminiti will be ready for next year when the Braves will trying to be a playoff team. Schwellenbach has a fractured elbow with no timetable to return. Smith-Shawver got Tommy John. Lopez won’t have pitched in a year. You have no idea how Holmes elbow will respond after electing not to get surgery. Striders velocity is still a question mark. And Sale is aging with an injury history. So no, the Braves aren’t just going to give away a young cost controlled potential ace because they have a lot of other high upside options
If the Braves are good enough with Waldrep in 2026 then they are definitely good enough with Gray. The only thing you lose with Gray is the future years of control thats why I mentioned all the Braves future pitchers. Duh.
Sale
Strider
Gray
Lopez
Schwellenbach
That might be the best rotation in all of baseball.
Plenty of ways to find a decent high leverage relief pitcher for a helluva lot less than $16 million.
The Braves are trying to contend for a world series. They are gonna want better than decent. Thats why they went and got Iglesias in the first place champ.
Except Waldrep’s upside is way higher and has significantly more future value than Gray and Donovan combined.
Future value?
Yeah hes worth more in the future. Donovan and Gray are worth more now. Thats how trades work when one team is rebuilding and another is playing to win now. Thats common sense.
Again aren’t you a Cubs fan? About to put you on ignore. Again…..
They got Iglesias for Jesse Chavez and Tucker Davidson. They extended him to that contract. There are just as good of high leverage relievers that aren’t coming close to $16 million. Actually wouldn’t shock me if they brought him back at $10 million per year or under
If Waldrep pitches next year like he did this year in the Majors, no, they aren’t worth more now. Not even close.
Waldrep is not going to be part of any deal for Gray. Period.
Bruce’s are up against a financial constraint and will need to be creative to add pieces. Waldrep is viewed as part of the answer.
If you want to talk about taking on Sean Murphy in a deal then something can maybe get done. But Waldrep is going nowhere for retreads, has-beens, and never-were’s.
Sorry my mistake, Herrera wants to catch next year after elbow surgery in the off season. But either way, Contreras to the Rays for pitching.
The Rays value defense at catcher. Perhaps they could use Pedro Pages he could be available.
Nootbaar and Donovan make sense to deal if the team is truly committed to a rebuild. Both have value and both are replaceable with Wetherholt and Church. Both will also make about 6 million each in 2026 so it would save some money too.
The Giants would probably love to have Donovan. He’s better than anyone they’ve got now. But if he’s available the Giants wouldn’t be the only team interested. Torres will be FA, so I think the Tigers would have interest. The M’s and Braves would as well, though I don’t know what those teams have in the pipeline.
Level and Jordan would make sense for the Cardinals. Not sure thats enough but those are 2 guys that make sense.
Arenado doesn’t have a lot of money left but they are still going to be forced to pay some of it.
That’s why you don’t wait until your players are flabby and sick before trading them.
Arenado deserves a WS, where ever he goes.
One of thee best to play the hot corner.
He does? Why? I think he should go back to COL, quite frankly, they paid a huge chunk of his salary when he left anyway.
He could’ve approved a trade to a contender. Hard to feel sympathy for someone who refused to make a move.
Guy would only go to 5 teams. That’s his right but he also gave up his right to get an ounce of sympathy from me.
The Arenado trade appears to have stunk for everyone. The Cardinal’s have an aging player owed $37 mil the next two years and the Rockies got garbage and paid $51 mil for it. Arenado went to an old team that got senile overnight and never even got to experience winning in the playoffs in St. Louis.
Arenado had an excellent 2022 and was a big part of that teams success. And he brought credibility to the team. But the last few years hes just not the same guy. I wouldn’t call it a bad deal for the Cardinals but I wouldn’t call it a good one either.
The Cards finished below .500, but I’m sure they’re pleased they were right up there in credibility
It wasn’t the trade that was the problem – it was the original contract. The trade was an attempt to salvage it, which only kind of worked but as you mention – not really.
My weekly “cards are in rebuild” article by this site citing Katie Woo. Same as it ever was…same as it ever was.
Grey said that he rather stay in St Louis, but if St Louis wants, he will waive his NTC for a contender.
I don’t think the Cards are that far away. They need to move Arenado, but after that, they’ll still have a 70+ win team, and the payroll is not huge.
Jeff McNeil for Arenado straight up, who says no?
Not the Cardinals.
Why would the Mets do this trade? Honestly.
Do they have any decent relievers they want to pay the Dodgers to take?
Gray to ATL seems like a lock
I thought so too but I hope not at that cost and at how he has regressed
He hasnt really, peripherals way better than the ERA.
He’s a strong number 2 on a short contract, there will be a market for that.
I’m a Red Sox fan who wasn’t a big Bloom fan, but he might actually be a decent GM for a team going into a full on rebuild like the Cards seem to be doing. He at least drafted decently for the Red Sox.
I was gonna say, well now that Sonny has regressed now the Braves will finally go after him. But looking at what he is owed, no way they should. 30+ mil a year is crazy for him. No matter what team he goes to, cards will have to eat majority of that contract. Like $20 mil for the pre option year. And when you do stuff like that they are going to want to get a really strong prospect in return which is silly. No team will do that. They are better off swapping bad contracts with a guy who’s $ is spread out over a couple years … not sure who that is but there is always someone. Rendon ? Idk
Gray is worth 1/25 – 1/30. Underwater but not by much.
Now if he was 3/100 he’d be well under, but its just a year
I can’t believe it took them this long to realize that. They will have to suffer giving up cash to move on from guys. Now that’s there only hand to play
Would still like to see Contreras to Milwaukee to form a battery with his little brother. Just think that would be cool.
Which one will pitch?
Castellanos and prospect for Gray?
No one else wants any of them at the price the goofy cards are paying
Perhaps they should include their GM as well. A statement like that is not a vote of confidence in that persons ability.
They waited too long Arrando, great career but not up to everyday play anymore. And the money is huge.
Wondering the asking price for Donovan. Tigers could use someone to replace Gleyber. He’s not quite the power bat they need, but he’s a consistent bat and we haven’t had many of those.
Marmol needs to go, The the playoff interviews of the managers shows how a real manager should present themselves, Marmol comes off a an arrogant know it all , when he is really clueless. The only good season the Cardinals had with him as manager was when Skip Schumacher was the bench coach and could TELL Marmol what to do.
