Dodgers Win World Series

By Charlie Wright | November 1, 2025 at 11:20pm CDT

The Dodgers are champions. Los Angeles outlasted Toronto in an epic Game 7 showdown. Will Smith delivered the game-winning swing, homering in the 11th inning to give the Dodgers their first lead, which they wouldn’t relinquish. Yoshinobu Yamamoto, pitching on no rest after throwing 96 pitches on Friday, closed out the win. Unsurprisingly, the all-time performance earned Yamamoto the Series MVP award.

LA becomes the first team to repeat as champions since the Yankees in 2000. New York won three straight titles (1998-2000). It’s the Dodgers’ ninth World Series title, moving them into a tie for third with the Athletics and Cardinals. It’s their third title in the past six seasons.

Miguel Rojas, an unlikely World Series hero, rescued LA’s season in the ninth inning. The light-hitting shortstop yanked a Jeff Hoffman slider over the left field wall to tie the game. Rojas entered the game with one home run since the All-Star break. He joined Bill Mazeroski as the only players in World Series history to hit a game-tying or go-ahead home run in the ninth inning or later in a winner-take-all game (h/t Jesse Rogers of ESPN).

Rojas’ heroics allowed Yamamoto to do something just as special. After a complete game win in Game 2 and a quality start in Game 6, the ace entered in the bottom of the ninth inning with two runners on. He hit Alejandro Kirk with a pitch to load the bases, but wiggled out of the jam. Defensive sub Andy Pages leaped over teammate Enrique Hernandez to reel in an Ernie Clement drive to send the game to extra innings. Yamamoto then cruised through the 10th inning in order before getting into trouble in the 11th frame. With runners on first and third and one out, he coaxed a double play grounder from Kirk to seal the game.

Toronto was in control for much of the game. Shohei Ohtani, pitching on three days’ rest, labored through the first two innings. After George Springer singled to start the third frame, Nathan Lukes sacrificed him to second. Ohtani then intentionally walked Vladimir Guerrero Jr., before hanging a slider that Bo Bichette deposited into the center field stands for a three-run homer. The Blue Jays had multiple chances to extend their lead, including a leadoff double in the eighth inning, but failed to cash in.

The Blue Jays came out swinging in the Fall Classic, exploding for nine runs in the sixth inning to win Game 1 in blowout fashion. A dominant Yamamoto performance evened the series, then LA took a 2-1 lead after Freddie Freeman walked off Game 3 in the 18th inning. Toronto bounced back, winning Game 4 and Game 5 behind strong starts from Shane Bieber and Trey Yesavage, respectively. Yamamoto cruised again in Game 6, pushing the series to its limit. Game 7 delivered an instant classic.

The timing makes it sound sore loser but the fact is there is obvious flaw that has given one team a major advantage over others. There are 29 other fan bases that were rooting against the 1.2 billion dollar super team.

You have to have the money to afford the deferrals in order to offer them. I’m sure 29 other teams have billions of dollars under the couch cushions or in the car somewhere they can scrounge up to offer billions in deferrals.

Umm the massive favorable media deal that gives the dodgers an unmatched revenue stream. Also the dodgers being owned by a group not a sole owner and being as well as being located in a state that if it was its own country would have the 4th largest GDP in the entire world. That’s is what prevents other teams from committing 1.2 billion dollars in payroll lol.

Who would’ve thought paying good players to win championships was gonna be a bad thing?

But I’m a Yankees fan, you play and admittedly, yes, you pay a lot to get the quality you need at times and develop/manage them together to bring home the hardware, as that’s how paid professional sports work.

Of course the Guggenheim has deferred a lot, I’m not arguing that. They and the owner of Toronto org. are better at investing than other owners like Nutting, Castellini, or Monfort.

They have more to invest as the put forth a superior product.

See when you offer Ohtani 10 year 700 mill dollars the next ten years the cbt tax hit should be 70 mill a year regardless how much you defer.

But when you defer 680 mill, lower the cbt tax hit from 70 mill to 46 mill, and then use that extra cap space to sign more players well that’s what fans have issues with

If dodgers had a 500 million payroll, had to pay their taxes, well I doubt fans would care as much.

All contracts are taxed at the present value at the time of signing. $70MM in future money is $46MM in today money. That’s the same as all contracts in MLB. Taxing the contract at future value makes zero sense.

You’re still lowering your cbt tax hit on the contract no matter how you slice it.

The cbt tax hit should reflect the value of the contract regardless of how much you defer

10 years 700 mill should be 70 mill a year. Deferr the whole thing pay Ohtani in 2034. But next 10 years your cbt hit is 70 mill.

You’re not lowering the CBT tax hit as it is taxed on present value, same as all other contracts. The only thing a deferral changes is when Ohtani receives his money. The Dodgers pay the full value every year, the CBT tax is calculated and paid, the money goes into the equivalent of an escrow account where it accumulates value, then it’s paid out as specified in the contract. It’s an accounting agreement between the player and the club and changes nothing about the CBT or a team’s responsibilities. Literally nothing.

          700 mill / 10 is 70 mill

          Not 46

You’re lowering your cbt tax hit by deferring money. That’s a fact no matter how you slice it.

Soto received 0 deferred and took a cap hit of what 51 mill I believe? If they deferred money it would have lowered much like ohtanis.

Big city franchises have had an advantage for a long time, but the flip side is that New York Mets completely missed the postseason. It takes more than money to be back-to-back World Series champions!

Classy fans who want to change the system, (1) oppose a lockout, (2) save their comments for a day other than the one when everyone honors the newly-crowned repeat champs!

They could also not pay the tax until the money gets paid to the player and the value at that time would be $70MM. But MLB and the PA agree that that would be bad, and illegal. So they get taxed at present value. It’s still not a tax dodge, no matter how you can’t wrap your mind around it.

Everybody forgets that Ohtani offered his salary to be deferred, it’s nothing the Dodgers ownership concocted out of thin air. Ohtani agreed to this structure where he only gets paid 2 million a year so the Dodgers are able to afford other players. This deferred contract offer would have been available to whichever team Ohtani chose back in free agency. Most teams don’t defer contracts because most free agents won’t accept deferred money. Ohtani was okay with receiving deferred money because of his lucrative endorsement deals in Japan , etc. which already allow him a comfortable wage.

If you add in lux tax, the Dodgers spent more this year on their payroll than all but the Yankees, Cubs, and Red Sox made last year in revenue (this year’s numbers not out yet). And of those teams, only the Yankees cleared it by over $35M. So realistically, only the Yankees can afford to spend like the Dodgers do. Most other teams would be operating at a loss to even try, and that’s before front-office salaries, scouts, analysts, stadium expenses, paying cheaper employees like security guards and ticket office people, etc.

So the argument of, “Well your team could’ve made Yamamoto an offer,” yeah, that’s true. But my team couldn’t have afforded him, Ohtani, Betts, Freeman, Glasnow, Snell, Kershaw, Muncy, and Teoscar and still had room for expensive misses like Conforto.

Owners won’t get what they want as far as a salary cap or floor but they will get something akin to the expanded playoffs as a way to end the lockout (or possible strike). Maybe Manfred’s golden at bat will come true! The game will suck a little more but will (essentially) be the same game.

Man it seems like everyone is just salivating for a lockout in 2027. They just can’t wait to not have baseball to kick around anymore. Well guess what? There’s not going to be a lockout, because it’s just risking too much money for owners/players and a reputational hit to the sport which it can’t afford after clawing it’s way back from the ’94 strike and the steroid scandal. The players union will never accept a hard cap and the owners who advocate for one are the same old whiners/POS owners like Moreno, Nutting, and Fisher, et al who don’t have any sympathy from anybody and certainly don’t have the leverage to force a lockout. I believe there will be meaningful changes made to the CBA but certainly no lockout or strike to worry about.

Don’t think you will have to boycott baseball, I see a lockout of the players for the 2027 season. Reason being some of these owners are going to hold strong for an MLB salary cap, players union will say no way. So, sit back and enjoy 2026 season it could be the last full season for a while. With broadcast dollars being down for 2027, some of these small market owners will be really stubborn to have a 2027 season with the big market teams continuing the massive payroll difference and not the revenue market to dig into. It is just the nature of the beast when it comes in 2027.

Not only getting there, but doing it as the clear underdogs. Vlad, Bo, and Kirk, good as they are, don’t match the star power on the Dodgers. We can add Yesavage to that list now, and they still come up short. Jays gave it their all and outperformed most people’s expectations.

As for taking out the runners, it’s risky, but justifiable. At that point, all he needed was one runner to cross home. The vast majority of extra-inning games end in the 10th or 11th, so it’s unlikely these guys come up again. And a tired, depleted pen against the Dodgers’ lineup? Can’t blame him for taking the risk to try to end it quickly.

There will be fans of every team that will scream foul when the team with the highest payroll wins it all. Not so coincidentally, they get very silent when their own team does it. It’s the way of things.

The truth is despite the belief that money buys championships… that isn’t always true. Exhibit A: The Mets. Money helps, but a well run franchise from top to bottom, helps more.

They will add, but I don’t know what the priorities will be. After this playoff run, they might have changed.

It’s notable that none of their big free agent signings were on their world series roster. Conforto, Yates, Scott.

So they’ll have work to do.

Without signing big money players, I think they would still be formidable with their development.

Game winning home run by a home grown catcher. (Will Smith)

Game tying home run by home grown player they brought back. (Miguel Rojas)

Clutch catch in center field by home grown outfielder. (Pages)

Regardless of what a new CBA brings I think the Dodgers will be extremely competitive.

Totally agree, they draft and develop well. And even though they spend a lot they seem to do it wisely. To be honest if we get a cap(I hope we do) the winning culture will most likely still lead to a lot of good players going there in discounts just because they are a well run team.

So many people complaining about the Dodgers money and Yamamoto was unbelievable. But that said, Yamamoto is set up to be the hero because of a 9th inning home run hit by Miguel Rojas of all people – with Ohtani on deck – off a big money closer In Hoffman. There are probably plenty of rosters in the league that Rojas wouldn’t be on.

Also, Toronto outplayed (and way outscored) LA in this series. I know this is little consolation to Blue Jays fans but man, they showed out this series. and should be nothing but proud.

Congrats to the Dodger who are an incredible team.

You know what reminds me on the dodgers after winning it 2 years and counting is that they won’t stop spending and looking always to improve next year and beyond. Yep, they’ll easily sign Tucker now without hesitation. Add, add add that the dodgers whereas teams like the cubs subtract with guys like scwarbs. Rizzo, Bryant and Baez after only the single year of winning it all.

Do they want Kyle Tucker? Does he want to play for the Dodgers? Maybe he doesn’t want to defer 80% of his contract and signs with the Yankees or Mets instead. Adding doesn’t always work out. Look at the Tanner Scott contract. Yeah they have enough money that they can eat that contract without flinching, but get enough Tanner Scotts and Michael Confortos and it starts to make a difference.

Sadly, that’s going to be way too much to ask for, I’m afraid. There is going to be a segment of fans that are going to believe CBA changes will magically fix bad ownership groups and/or management of a franchise. What those fans won’t talk about though is how baseball has gone longer than any sport without a repeat champion before today, or how “small market” teams in other sports like the Hornets and Browns are no closer to a championship than the A’s.

I’m not a Dodgers fan, and I was rooting for your team in this series because, as an Atlanta fan, I still root for Freeman. I also respect what the Dodgers have built. Congrats to you and your team, enjoy the celebration.

Was reported that the Jays offered Ohtani a somewhat similar contract, but wouldn’t defer either as much or as long. And didnt offer as much total.

The Jays are owned by the richest cable company in Canada and have an endless amount of funds available if they see its worth it. They could sign anyone they like, hence why they have gone after the biggest FA’s that fit their needs the last couple years.

The Dodgers dont have that significant of an advantage to another top 5 spender who also went after FA’s such as Ohtani and Yoshi. Vs teams like Tampa and Oakland sure/maybe. But vs teams like the Mets, Yankees, BoSox, and Blue Jays. Nope.

This might’ve been an entertaining finish but god was it awful baseball from a classical standpoint

1.) Talk about managing to the numbers instead of managing the moment. If you couldn’t see how locked in Rojas was you shouldn’t be around competitive sports. Dude had destiny written all over his eyes and for some reason you decide to pitch to him.
2.) leadoff double and you don’t get the insurance run in. That’s why you bunt and don’t swing away, because you can do everything right as a hitter and still not advance the runner if you’re swinging. And the hitter barreled the hell out of the ball and it landed in Muncy’s glove and bc of that you didn’t get the insurance run, and because of that you lost the World Series
3.) Nobody on and you throw Will Smith a meatball. It’s game freaking 7 why are you throwing anyone a meatball which leads me to point #4.
4.) It’s game freaking 7 why were any pitches down the middle? Both teams!!!! Meatballs down the middle like it’s freaking August and it’s not winner take all.

Definitely better than the garbage World Series from last year but god dam does baseball have a bad product right now. Age of Idiocracy in the MLB. I get these are elite athletes but did nobody teach these guys how to play baseball somewhere along the way?

Are you saying they should have intentionally walked the #9 hitter backup infielder Miggy Rojas who had hit one homerun since the All-Star break? And there were a lot of meatballs thrown by both sides throughout the entire Series and the vast majority of them were missed by both sides. Not sure if that’s normal (non) execution or if it’s just guys being tense and wanting to play the hero with big swings.

When you have a team that can say they have 2 billion dollars in gross revenue from outside the monies they have from their ticket sales, you’re going to be able to buy any player you want. The Dodgers have no player budget, it is an open checkbook policy, knowing that your revenue pipeline is never ending. The Dodgers will sign most of the top Japanese players leaving for the MLB. It won’t stop anytime soon. The only thing that will stop the Dodgers is basically age; they are the oldest team in MLB average age is near 31yrs old. Financially the Dodgers are deep pockets willing to spend for the top players.

This is a baseball problem not a money problem. This Dodgers team doesn’t even make it out of the division round 10 years ago. The Japanese WBC beats the Dodgers at this point.

Some of their better players are already in decline. Look how badly Mookie Betts did in this series. He needs to go back to the outfield.

He hit poorly, so he should…. change positions? What? Btw, he’s probably going to win a gold glove this year.

This is the first team to have over $2b gross. It comes from doing things right and signing the right people and being the best run organization in professional sports.

Should free agents rather go to Kansas City or the Angels? The Angels are in Los Angeles, too.

People want to go to Dodger Stadium and play for a first class organization. And that’s the Dodgers fault for being such a great organization to play for.

Teams should strive to be the Dodgers. They have billionaire owners, too.

I found it odd that Dave Roberts didn’t use any of his bullpen arms and that he used Yamamoto on no rest. Should have been a disaster for the Dodgers, but they won. Hats off to them. Here’s hoping ANYONE but them wins the series next year.

First inning Yamamoto had no idea what was going to happen. I have to hand it to him he handled it with poise but you could see on his face he was basically following his training and mechanics while he was finding the feeling in his arm. He just had this “oh crap I hope this goes where I’m aiming” look to him. Second inning he looked loose and in control though. Honestly looked like he could toss another 100 pitches once he warmed up.

The bullpen has been dookie all year and there are no do-overs like you get in the regular season. I don’t know why this surprises you.

There is likely going to be a salary cap placed in 2027, along with a lockout in 2027.

I know you are wishing for a lockout but baseball is way too lucrative and making crap-tons of money for both owners and players for there to be any sort of lockout or strike. Sorry not sorry.

It’s not a fair fight unless you are a fan of the top 5 payrolls in the league your team will disappoint you if not . Watching teams out spend 5/ 1 is a joke deferred billions to buy more players .

The billionaire owner of the team you root for should spend more money on things that help you win.

The Dodgers were brutal in the 90s with a huge payroll because they spent it on bad players like Andruw Jones and Nori Nakamura.

Hate Stan Kasten for changing the organization from top to bottom and making it the best run organization in professional sports.

Lazy comment. Spend more money to make the team you root for better. Draft better. Develop better. Scout better. There’s so much more than spending money, but you couch-dwellers always spill your cheetos over contracts.

You’re aware that enterprises like the MLB are an elaborate scheme to protect billionaires wallets and funnel taxpayer money to the elites right? You know this doesn’t exist without massive government intervention? You realize these owners have no incentive to spend anything because they are already winning by taking the money the middle class gladly hands over to them. Some meaningless trophy is second to the billions they stand to make by not upsetting the apple cart.

Yet, here you are, complaining about things that aren’t going to change? Or are you just that ignorant to the fact the Dodgers organization is the best run organization in sports where people want to play? It’s not like the Dodgers just went out and laid more money on the table for free agents to pick up. They had a number for Soto, got outbid. The Mets “couldn’t” spend money until they could and now they’re a problem, too? Is it only the teams that choose to spend are the problems?

Anyone catch Alejandro Kirk listening to his helmet while on deck in the 11th? Anyone notice the Blue Jays were rarely fooled by anyone the Dodgers threw tonight and seemed to always be on time for every off-speed pitch? Did anyone pay attention to every pitcher who struck out multiple batters every game all of a sudden giving up hard contact routinely.

    Must just be me.

I’m a Jays fan and always will be. I’ve never liked the Dodgers but I have to tip my hat to them as they didn’t panic when down and kept pushing and eventually got the best of the Jays.

Maybe next year fellas. This will sting for sure but it should make you dig harder next season and hopefully get the result you deserve.

Not sure why any Jays or Jays fans should be upset. Disappointed maybe, but not upset. This Jays team was predicted at the start of the season to finish bottom 2 in the ALE, bottom 5ish in the AL, and bottom 10 overall. They accomplished a lot and made it to extras in game 7 of the world series. They did a lot more than majority could concieve them doing 209 days ago. Congrats Jays. And Congrats Dodgers for doing what everyone expected of you.

Not sure if this is THE important question, but trying to get hit by a pitch is the answer. Then he got mouthy when he actually was hit by one. Definitely not a series highpoint.

It’s the getting mouthy part that’s most confusing. How could he possibly think that was intentional? Was he trying to get the Dodgers worked up or something? What was the point of that sideshow?

Congratulations to John Schneider and his team. John is a first class person and a great manager. The Blue Jays competed, hit…. then competed more tenaciously.

Toronto could have easily been the victor. Their time will come. As a Dodger fan, I am grateful that this year, the small things that often mean the difference between victory and heartbreak—went our way. There have been many years where we were in the same space as the Jays were this year. Your time will come Toronto fans. When it does, it will taste even sweeter because of the pain you feel tonight.

A beautifuly competed series by both teams!
