Diamondbacks Showing Interest In Alex Bregman

By Anthony Franco | December 16, 2025 at 7:09pm CDT

The D-Backs are among the teams that have expressed interest in Alex Bregman, as Bob Nightengale of USA Today was among those to report. Arizona seems to be a long shot to spend at this level but has a vacancy at third base.

Bregman is known to be a priority for the Red Sox. He opted out of his three-year deal with Boston after hitting .273/.360/.462 over 495 plate appearances. He made his third All-Star team despite suffering a quad strain that sidelined him between late May and the middle of July. That’s a testament to the strength of his first half. Bregman slashed .298/.380/.546 with 11 home runs over 53 games before the Break. His numbers dropped in the second half, as he hit .250/.341/.386 in his final 261 trips to the plate.

While Bregman’s power dropped late in the season, he showed his typically excellent plate discipline. He walked more often than he struck out even in his less impressive final few months. Bregman narrowly established a career mark with a 44.4% hard contact rate and remained the above-average hitter he was throughout his time in Houston. He’s no longer an MVP contender as he was at his 2018-19 peak, but Bregman is an annual threat for 25 homers with a .360 on-base percentage. He remains an above-average defensive third baseman and is revered for his clubhouse presence.

The D-Backs don’t have a clear answer at the hot corner. They traded Eugenio Suárez at the deadline. That theoretically opened the position for top prospect Jordan Lawlar, but his performance down the stretch was concerning. Lawlar hit .182 without a home run in 74 plate appearances. He also committed four errors (three on bad throws) over 76 innings. The D-Backs didn’t trust him defensively and limited him to mostly DH work in September until they’d been eliminated from playoff contention.

Lawlar came up as a shortstop but isn’t going to play there on a team with Geraldo Perdomo. He doesn’t have a path to second base playing time right now, though the D-Backs have fielded plenty of calls on Ketel Marte. They could give Lawlar a look in the outfield or dangle him as a trade chip for a young starter. For now, the likeliest course of action is to keep him at third base and hope that they can iron out his throwing woes in Spring Training.

It’d be very surprising to see Bregman wind up in the desert. The D-Backs are prioritizing the rotation even after agreeing to bring back Merrill Kelly on a two-year contract. Owner Ken Kendrick has already said payroll will come down from the approximate $195MM mark at which they opened the ’25 season.

RosterResource projects them for a $171MM payroll next season, so they’d either need to make an exception for Bregman or offload money in a trade. (They’d save $15MM in 2026 if they trade Marte for players making the league minimum.) The Diamondbacks are only one offseason removed from pulling off a free agent shocker, as almost no one saw them signing Corbin Burnes — who, like Bregman, is a client of the Boras Corporation — to a $210MM contract before it happened.

Burnes, who lives in Arizona, signed with the Diamondbacks largely because of family considerations. Bregman is a New Mexico native who grew up as a Diamondbacks fan, notes Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic. As Piecoro points out, the D-Backs (under the previous front office) had an opportunity to draft Bregman with the first pick in 2015. They went with Dansby Swanson instead, allowing the Astros to grab Bregman at #2 overall.

Bregman to Dbacks would surprise me as I figured they were in a mild rebuild. Exciting though. Dbacks fans what’s going on?

It does seem like the owner Kendrick will publicly state payroll needs to lower and then immediately sign a pricey free agent.

This makes no sense for a club nearing their financial limits even if Marte is traded. I see this as increasing the cost for Boston or whomever signs him as they try to get a better return on Marte. If they could get other teams to get nervous and sign Bregman first, those that didn’t sign him may “panic” and offer AZ what they’ve been seeking.

Taker, as Fever inferred, why not ask for everything the Sox own? Marte is valuable but the Sox are not including more than one every day MLB player if that. Such could change if Boston re-inks first. Romy is not going anywhere but a package of Mayer, Tolle and another minor league or two is possible. That would leave Duran available for a separate deal. If Marte was two years younger, I could see his value being what you mentioned but not at his current age, just starting a new deal. Even as cheap as it seems, it’s against Boston’s philosophy to be a player at 37 (unless it’s a long deal that got all of his prime seasons).

So you’re pointing out the fact that Romy is almost 30 to justify why the sox should give up more prospects for a player who;s 32.

Not the biggest Duran fan but saying he’s done doesn’t to you watching baseball that much

Duran is almost done there? It’s not that the club is trying to unload an aging player. Its only because of the OF they have without him. If it was just offense, I’d prefer Duran leading off and Anthony third. Abreu and Rafaela together save so many runs that Duran becomes the expendable one even though he’s a damn good two way player. That’s why he’s available as part of a package for an ace.

taker – If Marte is everything you claim, then why do they want to trade him? Pretty sure it’s the injuries and behavior that are the main reasons.

If they sign Bregman they wouldn’t be saving anything by trading Marte, in fact Bregman would get more than Marte’s $100M remaining contract.

Jerry, see what I wrote. If this started with the team, I think it’s AZ’s attempt to get Bregman signed to increase leverage on asking for more for Marte. If though it started with Boras, I would agree it’s an attempt to create a larger market. The Cubs and Detroit are likely waiting for Boston to either make their formal offer or make other moves that mean they’re out of the Bregman sweepstakes.

There is no market for Bregman. Nobody wants to sign him to a long term deal. There is nothing but numbers hurtling downwards for him as he pushes 35. Nobody wants to pay for declining years. He needs to just sign for one year contracts from here on out. All this is doing is trying to create buzz for something that ain’t happening.

Fever- I totally agree. If they could somehow swing a trade with Boston that includes ERod for one of their starters. That could make some sense. Boston maybe willing to take on the money but would likely take them out of the running for another big bat.

This is the only way I can see them even being in the Bregman market. Though the sox could just sign Bregman instead. The Yankees could consider something similar I suppose if they move Jazz.

I like the idea of Marte to the Sox for Duran and a starter. This seems to work for both teams. Saves the dbacks about 10m this year and gives them some offense back that they need. The Sox could still look at signing Bregman I believe in this case. The dbacks could look at a guy like O’Hearn with minimal additional cost after the savings of Marte. Even a Suarez reunion could be possible. If somehow they could get Duran, starter, O’Hearn and Suarez they would be looking pretty competitive. Seems like a better way to spend their money than Bregman.

Just like Grissom was valuable. If Boston has confidence in Mayer hitting, they will give him a job. Instead, they seem to be trying to fill the 2B and 3B positions, with anyone but him.

          styme – I don’t get the Mayer-hate.

Grissom can’t play any position well, Mayer is above average at three of the most challenging positions in baseball.

Mayer can hit, he has an .826 OPS over 5 years in the minors. He was playing hurt after being promoted last season.

The Sox are trying to fill one position, not two. Story and Mayer will nail down two of 2B, 3B and SS.

Sox, many like me see Early as the one for Boston to keep. it might be just me but I saw Jon Lester on the mound during Early’s few late season starts and he’s not to be traded other than for a true top starter. Also, Mayer has an injury history and outside of the hype, what has he proved? Campbell I’d love to move because while I expect his bat to be MLB quality, I’m worried about his glove at ANY position. Hopefully, it was nerves and the kid comes around but if a package of Tolle, Mayer and Campbell gets a deal done, I do it any day. Duran though needs to be saved for a trade for a starter and in my view cannot be dealt for only Marte even if it becomes a deal breaker.

dewey – I agree with you that Early should be the one to keep, but I don’t think he will be.

Tolle is 3 inches taller, 55 pounds heavier, and was drafted by Breslow whereas Early was drafted by Bloom.

Tolle is Breslow’s guy, Early is not.

It’s KC’s mental makeup that concerns me, hard to say if he will grow out of it but I can’t picture both him and Mayer getting traded already. Right now neither is an attractive trade candidate anyway …. one struggled badly this year and was demoted, the other continued a pattern of constant injuries.

I’ve said it before and will say it again, let Bregman go somewhere else (as a Red Sox fan here)- or only sign him to his market value of around $20M a year for 3 years. Him opting out may have been the worst advice Boras has ever given a client. His numbers simply doesn’t justify the $30M per year deal he was on. Mayer probably puts up very similar numbers this year, both offensively and defensively at a WAY lower cost. If you weren’t willing to go get a big bat in the lineup by adding Alonso or Schwarber, then don’t sign Bregman either.
Get a solid #2 pitcher and roll with a good young defense and a stellar pitching staff and add offense at the trade deadline if needed at a huge discount.

Red Sox offense was #7 in the League last year. Without Bregman, I’d wager they would be about the same again this year, but with a better pitching staff. More than likely playoff bound and always bats available at the deadline.

He’ll do better than $20M/yr….I am thinking 4 yr $105 – $110M with an option 5th year – $5M buyout….~$28.5M/yr for four years. I think I read 6 years – $160M – which I thought was a stretch. Who knows, but his mkt doesn’t look too great right now. I think Boras wanted Seattle to get involved.. lol

Baseball writers, and the Red Sox last year, so overrate this guy. He’s a .265, 25 HR, 75 RBI guy who plays a good third base. He’s in gradual decline. Developing an injury history. For that, Boston paid $40 million last year! And writers still act as if he’s elite. He’s solid, for 1-2 more years. Full stop.

They actually paid $30M AAV for him, but still an overpay. The “new thing is to make the deal sound bigger by deferring money”. Present day money, $30M.
To my point, I question if he’s worth $20M per year moving forward. I’d rather watch the young guys play and get equal”ish” production, and add a hitter at the trade deadline if needed. He doesn’t move the needle on whether this is a playoff team or not.

It was a huge mistake. Now, the Red Sox have no Bregman, no Devers, no Schwarber, no Alonso. I’ll stop there. Devers has an ego — many stars do — but I guarantee you, the Giants are happy to have him.

    Hey Snakes fans,
I don’t follow them closely so can someone tell me how bad of a clubhouse guy is Marte? is this a big deal or overblown?

Personally I think it’s overblown, just like all media these days, but it’s impossible to be sure since I’m obviously not in the clubhouse.

People forget that a fan made him break down and cry against the CWS last year after comments about his mother who had passed away and who Marte was extremely close with.

Point is, maybe some fans view it as he took a vacation to the DR midseason after his house was broken into, and they’re entitled to that opinion. But maybe there’s some other stuff that was happening behind the scenes and he needed a reset. Either way, he’s a great player and I’m confident any team in the league would love to have him.

I can believe that young ballplayers and his peers appreciate him, but to uncritically and credulously write that this avowed cheater is revered in the clubhouse seriously damages this author’s credibility and the site’s.

The chances are never good that I’m paying for front office, but stuff like this isn’t helping.

Suit yourself, but you’re missing out. And by the way, why are you here anyway if you hate it so much?

Second by the way, if you’ve done everything by the book your entire life, then throw a stone.

We’ve all made mistakes, especially when part of a group and you go along for whatever reason and actually hate yourself for it later.

Then maybe take the issue up with the commissioners office for why the championship wasn’t taken away and given to the Dodgers? (which I thought should’ve happened if they were indeed guilty at all.)

Which it wasn’t.., so there’s nothing to complain about.., especially something almost 10 years ago?

OK, I’m done. Suit yourself. But I will stick up for this site and the writers all day long and twice on Sunday.

He lives in AZ in the off season, he is a Boras client, sounds like a Burnes scenario. He wants to stay in his own bed during the season. Not saying it will happen, but with Kendrick paying the bills, no one thought he would sign Burnes last off season and it happen. They sign Bregman for 3B, put Lawler at 2nd. Trade Marte to either Boston or Seattle, get a ML ready pitcher, a couple 10 to 20 rated prospects.

Trading Marte and signing Bregman would qualify as a huge surprise much like the Burnes signing last off-season. I guess with Ken Kendrick as owner, we as Dbacks fans, must learn to never say never. I could support signing Bregman if he took a “hometown discount” in money and years which i dont believe he, or Boros, would accept.

Is this:: “Bregman is an annual threat for 25 homers with a .360 on-base percentage” plus a good glove, enough for a mega contra? I’m not saying he’s mediocre, but is he worth 6 years, $160M? Or more, if Boras stirs up the bidding? Solid, quality player. But 32, and not the player he was in 2018/9.

Mike, Bregman “should” be worth Marte money. The difference though is one is considered a clubhouse leader where there are negative stories on the other.

Marte signed for 6 years at $116.5m or $19.5m AAV. Add in more for Bergman’s leadership qualities and make it 6 years for $130m or a higher AAV for less guaranteed years.

This is the thing, trading Marte and signing Bregman becomes a huge clubhouse upgrade, especially with the young players AZ will be relying on. In terms of production, Marte is the better hitter, but Bregman is the better fielder (and still a very good hitter). Both are similarly “injury-prone” it seems.

@Mike I don’t know what each person believes a “mega contract” is, but teams are valuing each WAR at ~$11M this winter. Bregman averages 5.7 per 162 games in his career and was worth 3.5 in 2025.

Every team would prefer to only sign free agents for one year at a time to maximize their value and mitigate loss, but that’s not realistic.

Teams with some AB history-Cubs, BoSox, Tigers (FA offer)-seem to be the front runners. Thinking SFG would be a decent fit but with the whole Devers imbroglio last season in BOS, don’t see it happening. If ATL could get him for 3-4 years with a decently high AAV along with an opt-out at some point, maybe they pounce? Potential of a 2017 lockout affects the 30yo + players more than the younger guys. What team is both reckless/dumb/desperate AND rich enough to pay Bregman for 6 years? Maybe the Yankees or Phillies but, after all the smoke clears, he just might end up on the Mets.

…and yes…the Mets do have Baty who has played both 2nd and 3rd. Still…both Nimmo and Alonso gonzo from that lineup is a huge offensive hole to scramble out of. Bregman replaces a decent chunk of that.

At three years older than Ohtani, he’s basically got similar stat lines with a few power stats being higher. Bold move comparing the greatest baseball player ever to a prospect with quite a bit to prove. I hope he is exactly what you unrealistically expect of him for whatever team signs him. My personal guess is that’s another Japanese team. But who knows! Maybe he’ll take pity on the Pirates.

    What if…

Sign Bregman to play 3B, trade Ketel Marte for Duran + prospects.

OF looks like Gurriel, Duran, Carroll
Infield looks like Bregman, Perdomo, Blaze/Lawlar, Goldschmidt, Moreno at C.

Of course Gurriel is out til August so Jake McCarthy or Blaze can play in LF til then.

@acell10 I’m not sure it’s even that. Duran is a fine complementary piece to get for Marte, but if he’s the centerpiece, that’s a lost trade from day one. He had his best year early on and brings baggage with him. I don’t believe any team will pay appropriately for Marte, but for Boston in particular, I want Tolle, Early and Abreu with some lottery ticket prospects. Anything less is highway robbery given he’s an MVP caliber player in his peak with an extremely affordable contract that has significant deferrals. Hence; no one will pony up that cost for him.

        Reply
        • acell10

that’s a massive overpay for Marte to the point where any GM should be fired on the spot for making that trade. Also if the baggage you’re referring to from Duran is his admitted bouts with anxiety which he recieved treatement for describing it as baggage is in poor taste.. if you’re referring to his throwing around a homophobic slur then that is a knock against but hopefully thats one off for him. Duran is cost controlled and his stats probably fall somewhere between 2024-2025 numbers that makes him very valuable. That peak you speak of for Marte is coming to a close faster than Duran given he’s 32.

The lateral move aspect comes from signing a guy like Bregman for more money only to have to trade Marte. If the goal was to win then keeping both makes the most sense unless the actual baggage in the convesation comes from Marte.

I’m referring to the slur (he’s too old for me to believe it’s a one off). Anxiety is nothing in today’s world. Or shouldn’t be at least.

The price I”ve set isn’t unreasonably high. It’s his value. With deferrals he’s getting paid like a middling to good reliever in the final two highly productive years. No team is going to pay adaquately for that. But it is his value. Arizona isn’t some Pittsburgh/Miami/Minnesota that’s trying to cut costs exclusively and hope one of five prospects becomes a major league regular. They are trying to compete.

Fair criticism of Duran.however, the ask for Marte is quite unreasonably high and would never happen. Marte does have a great contract but his age and also the concerns about him being a lockerroom disruption (perhaps overblown) hinder his value as does the fact that he’s locked at 2B. Any team giving up a player one year reomoved an all star MVP plus two pitching prospect that have already made the major league team need to be a for a guranteed MVP level young player at a premium position with a great contract. Marte only fits one of that criteria.

Well it works out to be Marte for Bregman + Duran but considering Duran only has 1 year left it’s probably a moot point. I sincerely doubt the Dbacks are taking on any 1 year contracts.

Sedona, I’m not personally a Duran fan, but he’s controlled via arbitration through 2028. His value comes from his control more than his production (which is perfectly adaquate but hardly a huge get given the downside with which he also comes).

I think any time you can get a 15/30 CF with great defense you take that bet, that’s why we were so excited about Jake McCarthy in 2024 but he took a big step back. But I get it with Duran. Lots of red flags.

But having said all that, the Dbacks have not gotten good value in return for their players in the last 5 years. I’m not sure they’ve exactly “won” any of their trades. I don’t expect a huge return here either.
