Free agent left-hander John Means suffered an Achilles rupture while working out this week, he announced on social media. He underwent successful surgery yesterday. Means didn’t specify a recovery timeline but seems likely to miss the entire 2026 season.
It’s another devastating injury for a former All-Star whose career has been sidetracked by health issues. Means has made a total of 10 MLB appearances since the end of the 2021 season. He required Tommy John surgery early in ’22 and was sidelined until the following September. Means made it back for four regular season starts but missed the postseason because of renewed elbow soreness. That was an unfortunate precursor to a second elbow surgery, which he underwent after four starts in 2024.
Means has not appeared in the big leagues since then. He signed a $1MM contract with the Guardians last offseason. That came with a $6MM club option that gave Cleveland some upside if Means progressed well late in the season. He did make it onto the mound as part of a minor league rehab assignment but showed some understandable rust. Cleveland passed on the option and sent him back to free agency.
Making matters worse, Means said in his announcement that he was closing in on a contract with an unnamed team. That’s not going to go through now, though it’s possible his camp could look for a two-year minor league deal with an eye towards battling for a roster spot in Spring Training 2027. He’ll be approaching his 34th birthday by then and six years removed from his last mostly healthy season — a ’21 campaign in which he pitched to a 3.62 ERA across 26 starts for the Orioles.

That is absolutely brutal for Means. I thought his last arm injury was devastating but to tear your Achilles when you’re days away from a contract just sucks
Probably not a guaranteed one but definitely cost himself a bit.
Means to an end
Nope. Hard no on this one fella.
Agreed, using a guys last name in a pun can be funny, this ain’t one of those times. Feel bad for Means, not many guys have this long a run of bad luck.
Just purely for the resolve of human spirit, I hope he gets a chance to pitch in at least one more MLB game.
greg1: Oh lighten up.
Not many guys have this long of a MLB career making $12 million in the first place.
He hasn’t exactly had a crappy life.
Exactly Alfred. And if this was an article about say, Byron Buxton, half the comments would be snarky ones about his injury proneness. But for some reason everyone just feels sorry for this guy, who’s barely accomplished anything in his career because he’s always injured.
That’s a pretty weird take…
Barely accomplished anything in his career? One of 326 no hitters in the game and would have been one of 25 perfect games if not for his catcher – out of over 20,000 pitchers in MLB history, but sure, he barely accomplished anything in baseball.
Oh, I’m not saying he’s had a crappy life. The guy’s last half-decade has sucked because of the injuries.
Not sure what the $12M has to do with anything. Why is it that folks immediately go to money to suggest that no one should feel bad for an athlete? I don’t know Means from Adam, but I’m sure he’s more frustrated by his injury history than he is happy about the money he’s made.
greg1: With people suffering from poverty, disease, food insecurity, homelessness, hate-based violence, and other real problems, professional athletes are nowhere near the top of the sympathy/tragedy list.
So his salary should allow us to override his feelings?
Dimitri_in_LA: Use your brain and draw your own conclusions.
Quick question for you then, when was the last time you spent money on professional sports (ie. tickets, tv, gear, etc.) vs. when was the last time you donated time and/or money for the those in unfortunate circumstances? If the answer is sports, then aren’t you contributing to Means more that to the poor?
I can honestly and proudly say that I spend I haven’t spent a dime on professional sports this year, but have given time and money to the causes you reference.
P.S. – Separate of our disagreement, Alfred E. Neumann is an awesome handle.
greg1: I attended several games last season in New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Milwaukee, and St Louis.
I also made charitable donations totaling in the five figures to my synagogue, the food bank in my area, an international food relief agency, a wildlife rescue organization, and several causes on GoFundMe.
I feel blessed to be able to do so.
But I have no idea why you see spending money on sports as entertainment and making charitable donations as mutually exclusive things.
Thanks!
All I meant was many folks complain about players salaries and still spend thousands on sports while also acknowledging poverty, homelessness and hunger without giving a dime.
Sounds like you and I give a lot of time and money towards good causes. That’s cool man, nice to see others out there doing good.
My heart breaks for him.. He had a stretch where he was top five.
Top 5 at what….?
Top 5 in the Orioles rotation.
Didn’t he throw a no-hitter against the Mariners or am I confusing him with another ???
He did.
He did. It would have been a perfect game if not for his catcher, but according to Hammerin Hank, he barely accomplished anything in his career. Smh.
Damn. Poor guy.
Been nice knowing you John. It is a shame when healthy he was pretty good. But ten starts in five years is not a great track record.
Thanks for the insightful commentary there, Slappy.
Same to you, chief.
chief-
I am quite sure every thing you post ever is gold. At least in your mind J.A.
Yeah that sucks. Take a 2 year, minor league deal with whoever you were close to signing with and come back in 2027
maybe 2 years at 900k per year (or whatever teh vet min is now) just to have a spot to rehab since i am not sure if you can sign mutli year minor league deals
I feel for him but the dude is made out of the weakest of glass despite his efforts to make it strong
He never means to get injured. It just keeps happening.
Means coming to an end.
Ouch. You gotta feel for the guy.
John used to means business, now he means injury after injury after injury. Brutal because dude really can pitch
Well, that sucks. Probably the end for him.
So much talent, but it seems he just keeps getting injured. Prayers up for him.
Injury after injury after injury. Teams staying away from him now…
Might be worth looking at other career paths at this point. Seems like his body just can’t do it anymore.
He’s made of glass
Hate to see it in general, as an O’s fan its even tougher to see after knowing how good a pitcher he had been while healthy. I don’t know if he’ll intend to try to comeback after this after all his previous injuries, but I hope he succeeds in whatever he tries to do.
Baseball can be a cruel sport. Some team dodged a bullet nevertheless terrible news for Means. I wish him the best.
Career earnings, $12 million. He’ll be find post baseball if that is his fate.
I root for WVU grads. This is so unfortunate
A ballplayer getting injured is always unfortunate, regardless of where they went to school.
You don’t say.
Guy can’t catch a break.
layventsky: Other than being blessed with the talent and ability to make it to MLB, which is better than more than 99.5% of the population.
He hasn’t exactly had a crappy life.
Seems like he caught a few breaks. And tears. And sprains.
Achilles tendon injuries used to be very rare, and almost always afflicted older athletes. I don’t have the stats, but it seems that this injury has been been increasingly common. Didn’t some poor devil (don’t remember the sport) who blew both of them out at the same time a year or two back? It’s even stranger given that pro.athletes have scores of trainers who are really into stretching for flexibility. I’m not trying to imply anything in the case of Mr. Means, but one thing that is associated with an increased risk of ruptured tendons is over use of steroids, both the anti-inflammatory type and anabolic steroids. Of course everyone knows that it can’t be of the anabolic type, they are illegal, against the rules, and the various governing bodies have foolproof testing protocols. Well, at least surgery has come a long way over the years and guys often come back and play again. Back in the Day guys would come back. Driving a truck.
He will have a shot at coming back from this due to the fact that he pitches. Back before the DH he would be in the same boat as any other player who has to run the bases. Hope he can come back.
Im not sure when it was you are referring to that achilles injuries were rare. Ive seen quite a few over the years and oddly most were rather casual movements opposed to it rupturing on an explosive first step. Seems to me in most instances it was likely a lingering small unknown tear and all of a sudden the rest goes.
Not sure any amount of stretching would save on most tendon or ligament injuries. Think most are just a case of athletes pushing their anatomy to the limit, mixed with some degree of over training and carrying to much muscle. In doing so that extra muscle allows more force and/or torque than ligaments or tendons are built to handle.
I remember when Johnny Unitas’s career was ended following the 1973 season, I believe that it was in 1974. He was playing racketball when he blew the tendon out, age of forty. It was decades before I read about an athlete suffering from that injury. I’m not saying that it didn’t happen, it could have gotten by me, but suffice to say that it wasn’t a common injury. Proper stretching does in fact, over time mitigate the risk of blowing out tendons. And you are actually making my point regarding achilles tendon ruptures being “odd”. The achilles tendon is the strongest tendon in the body. They shouldn’t just blowout while, as you put it, from a ” rather casual movement”. But if you look into the side effects of say, prednisone you will find “tendon ruptures” listed. Responsible doctors don’t like to use prednisone or other corticosteroids more than two to four times a year for tendonitis. But man, when you are in pain it’s a miracle drug! Team doctors are pressured to push the limits of these drugs. And then you have the anabolic steroids which builds muscular strength faster than tendons and ligaments can strengthen (this happens without steroids, the blood supply to tendons and ligaments is far less than to muscles). So to cut to the chase I think that it’s likely that many of these achilles tendon ruptures are the result of steroid use. There is simply too.much money involved to allow your competitors to cut your lively hood out from under you. The owners in all sports are now only interested in appearances. Using the right steroids, in moderation allows for tremendous strength gains without getting into Bonds’ cartoon proportions. Fans and owners don’t care if things “appear” to be equitable.
Achilles Tendon Rupture: What Is It, Symptoms & Treatment share.google/yXRGst3ePEaYg0uXm
Ruptured achillies are and have been a common injury. Yes stretching is gonna help the average person who is not regularly active. Seeing as Means is a pro athlete Im gonna assume he stretches regularly. That said and as anyone who works out often knows, although excellent for overall health it often comes with injuries for those who workout regularly. The repetitive movements and stress on tendons and ligaments often result in injury. Ultimately working out is tearing and repairing muscle fibers. When seeking that outcome the muscles are being worked in unison with tendons and ligaments. The tendons and ligaments dont heal as easily as muscle tho.
Many former athletes and aging gym guys have a littany of lingering pains and aches. Joints get wore down, scar tissue builds around existing known and unknown injuries. Basically its running up to many miles on one’s body.
Not trying to be critical, you just made a bunch of assumptions and tried to lump them all together and there are quite a few inaccuracies in those assumptions.
Cardinals will definitely sign him now
2 year deal 1 million this year and 10 million next year. I could actually see it with bloom
Hate it for the guy. Damn
Horrible news for Means. One of the good guys, too. Wishing him a speedy recovery.
Wow, this guy has horrible luck.
‘Tang It: I repeat what I said elsewhere…
Other than being blessed with the talent and ability to make it to MLB, which is better than more than 99.5% of the population.
He hasn’t exactly had a crappy life.
The guy just wants to play and can’t stay healthy. I empathize with that.
‘Tang It: Sure, but keep it in perspective.
A lot of guys want to play at this level, but they have to come to grips with their athletic mortality sooner than a guy like him because they don’t even get the chance.
Al,
Not having the talent to be an MLB player is one thing, not being able to apply MLB-level talent is another.
@Alfred E Neuman
Why does it bother you that people want to express their empathy for Means? If an injury prevents someone from pursuing their chosen profession, why does it matter to you what their careers are? It’s a loss for the individual and their family regardless.
gbs42: He did apply it, longer and better than many guys who reach MLB, and enough to make $12 million doing it.
He’s done very well in the grand scheme of things.
Think glass half full.
YBC: Doesn’t bother me at all. I just think of the glass as half full, not half empty.
Jeez, this guy’s baseball career is a country and western song. Hope he doesn’t have a dog.
His brother Jake was drafted by the Royals but they released him 2 years ago. He never made it to the bigs
Hate it 😥
AJ –
A good upside guy to make a minor league deal with and give an opt out if not on ML roster by 5/15/27.
There’s no upside at all with this guy. He can’t stay healthy, period.
This is squarely on evil Mike Elias and his arm destroying secret sauce strategy, if the strategy can take down a bull moose of man like Felix Bautista, Means didn’t stand a chance…he musta been compensating for the destroyed arm by using his Achilles in an unadvisable fashion…pretty sure that’s a common issue with pitchers who escape Elias’ TJ factory

Teams are going to feast on Means clearance isle timeframe
Hope he keeps battling and makes it back to a mound some day. This would be an absolutely brutal way to go out, I hope he gets a happier ending than this.
Feel bad for the guy. Hoping for a speedy recovery and return to the mound sooner than later, but not before 100% health.
Yowch!
Poor Means, wonder what his doctors mean to do
What awful luck. I saw him pitching on a rehab assignment a couple of years ago for Norfolk against the WooSox. It was like he was throwing beebees, he was head and shoulders above all other pitchers that night in Worcester. Griffin Canning suffered the same injury while pitching for the Mets last year, ending a nice come back year. It remains to be seen how soon he’ll be back on a mound, and he’s still unsigned.
Good luck Mr. Means!
Such a sad turn of events for such a great dude.
Tough luck. Hoping for a nice recover.
Let’s see if BAL shows any urgency in shoring up that rotation. Still not looking like a playoff contender with that rotation.
Sadly, John will soon be a man of modest means.
$10.8M in career earnings will soften the blow.
New year new injury
At least he has already made $10 million
He won’t be living on the street anytime soon
It’s interesting that a lot of us looked up his career earnings to decide just how devastating this injury is. I did. 12 million is a good chunk, the injury is horrible but at least there’s some financial security. I wonder if any of them carry insurance?
At first I wanted Cleveland to pick up his 6 million option cuz I used to like his game and maybe cuz I thought we’d get the second coming of Matthew Boyd who I REALLY wanted to keep. But the Guards know pitching, they dodged a bullet here. A shame he didn’t sign with a wealthy team and then have this happen. Best wishes, get well Mr Means.
Breslow was not interested before but has now offered him a 2 year 40 million deal with a first year player opt out.
Seems like he has Soroka’s luck
Wow. This guy is making Jacoby Ellsbury look like Lou Gehrig.
Reincarnation of Mike Hampton
2 Thomas Johnathon surgeries and a ruptured achillies, time to hang it up dude. Your body has spoken
Red Sox could use Means for ‘27. Red Sox are a team without Means.
