Nationals left-hander MacKenzie Gore is a logical trade candidate this winter. According to Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan of ESPN, Washington’s new president of baseball operations Paul Toboni has discussed Gore with multiple unnamed clubs but has a high asking price.
The case for the Nats to listen on Gore is straightforward. The club’s rebuild stalled out to a point that the franchise is undergoing a major shakeup. They fired president of baseball operations Mike Rizzo and managed Dave Martinez in the summer. Toboni and Blake Butera are now in to replace them. The club would not have gone down that road if they expected a return to contention in the short term. Presumably, the new guys will have a few years of leeway to steer the ship in a new direction.
Gore is 26 years old, turning 27 in February, and is two years away from free agency. As a Boras client, he isn’t terribly likely to sign an extension this close to the open market. He is projected by MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz for a salary of just $4.7MM and would be due another raise in 2027. Over the past two seasons, he tossed 326 innings for the Nats with a 4.03 earned run average.
He showed a higher level of upside for most of 2025. He had a 3.02 ERA through the All-Star break. His 7.7% walk rate was better than average and his 30.5% strikeout rate was quite strong. Only four qualified pitchers were ahead of him in terms of that strikeout rate, an impressive set of names which included Tarik Skubal, Zack Wheeler, Garrett Crochet and Hunter Brown.
He didn’t finish on a high note, however. He twice went on the injured list in the second half, once due to shoulder inflammation and the second time due to a right ankle impingement. Around those IL stints, he had a 6.75 ERA, bringing his season-long ERA up to 4.17.
Combining the club’s situation with Gore’s talent, affordability and window of control, there’s a clearcut case for him to be available. For all those reasons, MLBTR ranked him #1 on our list of the Top 40 Trade Candidates, which was published at the beginning of the offseason. That makes it unsurprising that Toboni has discussed Gore with various clubs this winter. It would be more surprising if he hadn’t.
What remains to be seen is if he gets an offer he considers strong enough to accept now. There’s an argument that perhaps he should wait until the trade deadline. It would give the newly-hired Toboni more time to get settled in and build out his staff before making a potentially franchise-altering move. As mentioned, Gore didn’t finish 2025 on a strong note. Perhaps a good start to the 2026 campaign would increase his trade value relative to today. During the offseason, interested teams can pivot to free agency, an option they won’t have in July.
On the other hand, it’s also possible that Gore will have less trade value a few months from now. If he suffers a notable injury in the first few months of the season or perhaps just posts some numbers that are more decent than ace-like, that could have a negative impact on the offers coming into Washington.
What might work in the Nats’ favor is that some other speculative trade candidates might be less available. Sonny Gray has already come off the board, having been traded to the Red Sox. The Marlins were expected to have Sandy Alcantara and/or Edward Cabrera on the block but they reportedly might need to add payroll this winter, making a trade less likely. The Twins seemed to kick off a rebuild at the trade deadline but president of baseball operations Derek Falvey recently pushed back on the idea that the team will keep selling. Perhaps that means Joe Ryan and Pablo López will stay in Minnesota.
Teams like the Brewers, Pirates and Royals could have pitching to move but they would likely be looking for big leaguers in return. The Nats, presumably, would be focused more on prospects who can help in the long term. For teams shopping in that aisle, Gore is the most attractive option.

This has the cubs written all over it
Makes sense tbh
Yeah, they’ll agree to a trade and then back out because the medicals are concerning. Luzardo all over again.
Thank you has entered the chat.
I think the Os. The Nats have a number of holes, and the Os still have a number of very good spare parts. I could see Mayo and Kjerstad getting a deal done- but they may have lost too much value in the past 12-18 months. THe Os have nowhere to play either of those guys. Mayo is not playing 3b with Westburg, and they tendered Mountcastle. Rutchman and Basallo are splitting C and DH. The OF will have Cowser, Ward for sure, with a need for a FA CF. And they still need to work in Oneil if they are not willing to just eat that deal.
The nationals and Orioles have never completed a trade. They have issues with their shared tv deal. Would never happen
Shared tv deal is over. New Orioles owner.
Plus the current respective owners are friends, or at least on good terms with each other.
Yeah they hate each other
Wild ride, no they do not. Rubenstein was part of the group that wanted to buy the Nats from the Lerners. The bad blood was with the Angelos family who are out of the picture. Rubenstein also settled the tv deal stuff. There is no “hate.”
Incorrect. All that is in the past. Keep up plz. TV deal is done.
Well ok that is probably better for everyone involved thanks for correcting me. They would be good trade partners otherwise.
It wouldn’t have years ago, O’s have new ownership and a clean slate. Still don’t think Mayo and Kerstadt would get it done, though.
Kjerstad has 0 trade value and we don’t even know if he’s cleared to play baseball. He’s closer to a DFA than acquiring an impact pitcher.
They’re not trading two years of a controlled pitcher for a busted prospect and a guy whose clock has already started ticking. Nats would be looking for prospects.
Honestly I would pass. The asking price was Horton, Shaw, Ballestroes and Cassie at the deadline. So Jed has barked up that tree already. Plus if you are tossing away your farm for one guy with no chance of an extension that is stupid
So this is not a Cubs move. Jed has said that he feels good about his current line up. Which means he is not putting any 26 man on the block
At this point King makes the most sense for Jed. Pay 4/88 and keep his 26 man intact. Or target Sandy Alcantara for prospects in the pipe. Wiggins and Rojas would be more than enough to pull that deal.
The main take away is not the years of control for return value. It is how much payroll would Jed take on. The more he takes on the less he has to give away.
But I would rather have King at this point. I see Craig going with a 6 man rotation when Steele returns as his staff has questions on health age and duribility and having that extra day plus Rea to piggyback Steele will keep them around more
Way too many red flags with Gore plus we already have Steele, Shota and Boyd as lefties would probably be the first team to start 4 lefties.. either way the ask does not match the talent/production.
Horton showed he’s better straight up, though he likewise missed time. If true, that ask for Gore was delusional even then being more than return for far superior Crochet (and RSox had no Boras to figure out an extension like someone would for Gore).
Would be curious to see if his value has declined at all since the trade deadline given how he finished the season. Wouldn’t mind parting with Shaw, Ballesteros and Alcantara as the center of a deal and maybe another lower level prospect. Would honestly be shocked to see Jed part with Horton or Cassie at this point (unless they have other plans in the outfield and Cassie becomes expendable).
Is it only me or do I feel like Nats over value Gore.
There is nothing to tell me that Gore > Horton over the next 2 years.
Ya man. Cubs only need pitching and have just one pitching prospect. Give the Nats whomever they want position wise including Shaw and caissie. All very replaceable through farm or free agency. Beats shelling out 250 million for a number 2 starter.
Don’t forget the Giants may want to check in.
***AJ Preller’s Spidey-Sense just went off***
This has the Giants written all over it.
When do the nats become just another bottom feeder in a perpetual rebuild like the marlins or pirates
I’d love the Yankees to consider Gore but have Fried and Rodon already. Do teams ever win with that many Leftys in a rotation.
Only a true 1st place team could have so many lefties in a rotation
who cares if they are righty or lefty as starters anymore. I do not think teams think about it as much anymore for starters. For releivers it matters a lot more (but even that went down with the 3 batters rule).
You get the 5 best starters you can, if one is a lefty you are happy, but if 5 are, i do not think they care much.
I think that this is fair
They definitely think about it, being that most teams have more righties in their lineup than lefties.
James – Why would there be a difference between relievers and starters?
25% of all MLB hitters bat exclusively lefthanded, so there’s very few favorable matchups when you have a lefty pitcher.
Of course some of the best pitchers in the game will be effective against all hitters, but the vast majority of lefties don’t perform as well against righties.
It certainly didn’t hurt the Phillies last season with Sanchez, Luzardo, and Suarez.
6 losing seasons in row and looks like 7 8 …. are coming
from 2013 to 2021 the Nationals were always in the top 12 team salaries (7 of those 9 years in the top 10) they’ve gone into sell-off mode since the World Series win in 2019 and have so far been shaky at best in their rebuild attempt.
Mark Lerner likely stepped into the World Series win when Ted stepped down in 2018. i don’t know how much of the blame for the Nat’s spending decline and lack of progress on their rebuild lays with Mark but i’m not a big proponent of coincidences.
the fans won’t put up with much more of this and we’ll have to see how this new team leadership pans out. but DC is not nor will they likely ever be a perennial bottom feeder in the sense that the Pirates or Marlins or A’s or Rays have been known to be
They just did not develop and draft outside of the Soto haul.
The Soto haul is basically their best players- Abrams, Wood, and Gore…. still a great haul (they also got another OF i am blanking on that was a top 30 prospect in baseball but has floundered).
The rest of their farm system has just not delivered the other pieces they needed to actually contend. Gore and Abrams already were in the bigs at the time of the trade, so they may be looking to restock and see if they have another go with Wood still under team control in 1-2 years.
Other 2 were Robert Hassell (outfielder) and Jarlin Susana (pitcher).
He is not the only one, but the Green miss really hurt, given how high he was picked. Too soon, but Crews hasnt panned out, so far, either.
James123
They just did not develop and draft outside of the Soto haul.
=========================
The Nats, just like the Angels, feel that minor league development is a waste of time. Garcia was barely 20 when he was promoted. Wood was 21. Crews 22. Lile 22. Robles was 20. Kieboom was 21.
All these guys strike out too much. Since you can only keep a player for 6 years no matter when you promote them, why not wait until they are fully developed?
Don’t forget the Rockies!
They aren’t. It’s ridiculous to assume that. If they trade gore, it’ll make the 2026 team better
@Big whiffa Who is assuming that?
The article is all about the nats reloading. You really think that’s their plan for 2026 ? To keep reloading or is it to see if all this young talent can compete in the east ? They’ll only make moves to improve this roster for this season. If Gore is traded, it won’t be for more prospects
Who, may I ask, is trading the Nats a package that will make them better for 2026 (and by extension, make their own team worse for 2026) for a Boras client with 2 years of club control?
Gotcha ! They definitely have holes til fill. Casas+ is an option, Baty+ from Mets. Donavan/liberator from cards
I honestly don’t think he has a lot of value or is really on the block. Wins in May can get u to October but if you have nothing left in the tank, it’s not a good look for acquiring teams.
Oh how bout Albais for gore straight up. I think Atlanta is a team that would love to get their hands on him
All of those players fall into 1 of 2 categories:
1. Won’t make the Nats better in 2026 than Gore would
2. Aren’t on the block, especially for a Boras client with only years of club control who has been inconsistent so far in the majors
Did u see the mlb.com rumor ? It says there’s no confirmation he’s even on the block. Also
Albais > gore
Braves aren’t going to trade Albies for Gore if that’s the case. Given their current situation they probably want someone with more club control than Gore anyway.
He’s good but definitely not a #1 like the price tag seems it’s gonna be.
That dropoff between the first and second half was extreme.
In the first half he struck out 30% of hitters while giving up a line of .236/.299/.360.
In the second half he struck out only 20% of hitters while giving up a line of .288/.381/.492.
Numerous teams would obviously jump to acquire him, but that implosion likely hurt what they would get for him today versus this past July.
The Padres supposedly tried to reacquire him and I read that they were essentially auctioning off Leo De Vries to the highest bidder so I wonder if he was in their offer. Lots of teams dodged a bullet at the deadline not pulling off that trade
Teams won’t worry about his 2nd half at all.
Gore has results have been average at best. A 4.19 ERA and 4.02 FIP. A solid #3 starter. With 2 years before he hits free agency he will still have a high value. Not what a Skubal would have with one year of team control left and not near what Crochet had when the Red Sox traded for him, but still quite a bit.
Nats gave him very low run production all season. Look it up
What does the team’s run production have to do with his ERA and FIP?
I believe his point is that while those run prevention numbers may not be enough to win many starts on a team like the Nationals, they in fact would be on a team like the Yankees.
The lack of elite run support makes Gore sad. Look that up.
Have YOU ever tried nicking the corner on a 3-2, bases-loaded pitch to a big league hitter through ever-welling tears? It’s impossible!
Boom, there goes the dynamite and with it those ERA and FIP numbers.
Teams trading for him won’t be looking at his era fip.
His price tag is insane. Where is Gore so valuable that teams are giving up top 100’s and a haul? His numbers look like mid-rotation numbers, not ace numbers like Framber Valdez.
Pls tell me where he’s so valuable so I can understand.!!!
Strong #2 and a lefty. The good teams are looking at different data than 99 percent of fans. So they don’t care about worthless things like wins era. And don’t care what he has done but only what he will do for them.
New FO in DC, new owner in BAL, time for these guys to do a win-win deal.
Two years of gore will cost more in prospects than most teams have.
SF should dangle Elderidge or Pirates could use Florentino plus some
Eldridge > gore
Only thing Pirates have is pitching. They need to trade it for bats.
Just about every team could get Gore if they wanted to. Even the worst farm systems still have prospects. Every team just had a draft and are now able to trade those players. Draft and international every year.
Abreu, Sandlin and Bleis should get it done.
Who
Wouldn’t even push negotiations further because the Nats would tell them to completely re-think their offer.
Abreu isnt a bad player but not something the Nationals would want. Their OF is set with young talent at the big league level. And Abreu has already lost 2 years of service and ready for arbitration after next season.
The prospects are filler only, not key pieces. Maybe Sandlin as the 3rd or 4th piece, because they need pitching. Certainly not as the top prospect involved.
That means Duran stays. Anthony to Rf
Wilyer Abreu, Daivd Sandlin, and Miguel Bleis won’t get it done!
The Nationals are looking for prosepcts, Sandlin and Bleis are both rated overall at 45. The Nats are looking for top 100s.
This is more realistic
OF Jhostynxon Garcia
LHP Connelly Early
INF MIkey Romero
C Jorge Rodriguez
I’d take the Abreu package, he looks like a perennial all-star.
Dodgers could swoop in here. They love SP and they always seem to make that one big move every off-season. If nothing else they could do it just to bid up the price on everyone else.
I could definitely see playoff ousters Cubs, Tigers or Padres, and, teams on the cusp Mets and Giants paying the premium ask
To me, this is a deal that screams out Mets. They have younger pitchers and position players that can be available, need to make rotation better quickly and on the $ cheap is a bonus.
Might as well get McKenzie Phillips while they’re at it since baseball is a marathon of a slog- playing one day at a time
What’s the asking price? Any ideas?
Are there any pitchers in all of baseball that average over 6 innings per start on a consistent year to year basis? I know I can look it up so it’s not really a rhetorical question but it’s kind of meant to be one.
Framber Valdez and Logan Webb.
OK, thanks.
Thats actually quite insane isn’t it?
Hard to believe. Crochet has done it once now. I’m surprised Skubal hasn’t. I would have thought that half the aces would, so 10 ish guys, not 2..
Thats actually quite insane isn’t it?
=======================
It’s not. Skubal’s 3rd time thru the lineup gives up a .654 OPSa. The average RP, in his first time thru, allows a .708. So the best pitcher in BB is only marginally better than the average RP, 3rd time thru.
You also have the advantage of pulling your SP based on matchups. If you have two good lefties coming up in the 6th, you might as well make the switch.
And it also serves to reduce your overall innings for you SPs.
There could be plenty but for obvious and good reasons there isn’t.
even though he’s a boras client .. hope he breaks the bank in two years .. perfect player to take over as ace of the Phillies
Gore has not shown that he is anywhere close to being an ace. He is strictly a middle of the rotation starter.
True. There are times he looks like a true ace, and then other times he gets shelled or walks the ballpark.
Smart teams will view him as a strong #2
“The club would not have gone down that road if they expected a return to contention in the short term.”
Instead of sharing your opinion, just stick to the facts or qualify your statement. “Its not likely that…” “Many in the industry believe …” Or something else that shows clearly that the statement is not fact, that it is opinion.
Bring Bryce Eldridge home, like the Braves did with Olson.
I think people are overestimating Gore’s trade value. His second half was not good, it isn’t currently the trade deadline when there are surge prices, and there are a number of other potential options where teams could easily say “if that’s what you’re asking then, thanks, I’ll try my luck in the FA market/with one of the other SPs potentially available for trade.” Nats probably hang on to him for now, at least until a lot of the other names are committed somewhere, if not just altogether.
Fake news
MacKenzie Gore had a record of 1-2 with an ERA of 2.84 and 34 strikeouts in 6 appearances between August 6, 2025 and September 21, 2025
He had a bad 2 weeks and final start
He’d be a good fit & low cost with the Yankees and his Wins would jump b/c of Yankees run production, Nats gave him poor run support .
Read where AZ is interested in Gore, could it be a deal involving Marte be involved.
Why would the (still) rebuilding Nationals want Marte? He’s 32 and just signed a 6-year extension.
And anyway, I feel like the “teams are interested in X” headlines are probably more often than not leaks from the team trying to drive demand up for their player because no one is biting at their asking price.
For everyone clamoring for Gore to go to an AL East team; in 55 career innings against the Orioles, Red Sox, Yankees, and Blue Jays (he’s never faced the Rays) Gore has allowed 31 runs (22 earned) over 11 starts. I feel like his stuff wouldn’t play in that division
I hope the Nats are able to deal Gore and Abrams, but only for very good returns. I also hope they pawn off Louis Garcia but I’m less hopeful of a decent return in his case.
Any relation to Makenzie Phillips??????
So they are interested and in trading two of the biggest pieces of the Soto trade.
Makes sense given their two years left of control and the Nats aren’t contending during those two years. The prize in the Soto trade is woods.
They can get back some good prospects for both Abrams and gore. That trade is still gonna help the Nats for years to come as long as they move both Abrams and Gore. If they wait another year then that trade won’t be nearly as good going forward as it can still be.
I think any trade for Gore would bring into question the PBO/GM mental stability and potentially get them fired, certainly hospitalized. Most likely Gore scenario; He pitches inconsistently & relatively poorly throughout the spring and into the first week of May and gets shut down with shoulder fatigue/inflammation. End of June it’s announced that he’s having shoulder surgery. He misses the rest of the ‘26 season and all of the strike shortened ‘27 season. Is a free agent during the ‘27 ‘28 off season and signs elsewhere. Any trade for Gore isn’t looking so good anymore is it?
It’s still looks pretty good given his upside and salary.
I don’t think a team will overpay but gore still has some real value. Especially given the cost of starting pitching so far in this market.
Or, if Gore comes out blazing like he did last year, his price tag goes up.
So basically, you’re saying that trading him now is a good idea, if you can accurately predict bad health, but a bad idea if you can accurately predict good health.
Same with every player in every sport.
Nats wouldn’t be shopping him if they thought he’d be healthy going forward.
“Presumably” should START the sentence, not come in the middle between commas.
