Cubs second baseman Nico Hoerner has come up in trade conversations, according to a report from Patrick Mooney and Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic. The report emphasizes that while president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer gauges the market value of virtually every player on the roster during the offseason, that shouldn’t be taken as an indication the Cubs intend to move Hoerner.
It’s easy to see why teams would be asking after the 28-year-old. Hoerner is coming off a career year where he won his second career Gold Glove for his defense at second base while slashing .297/.345/.394 (109 wRC+) with 40 extra-base hits and 29 steals in 156 games. He struck out at a career-best 7.6% clip while walking 6.0% of the time. Only Luis Arraez (3.1%) and Jacob Wilson (7.5%) struck out less often among qualified hitters, and that trio was joined by Steven Kwan and Caleb Durbin to make up the full list of batters to strike out less than 10% of the time in 2025.
That contact-oriented offense combined with arguably the best defense in the sport at second base, creates a consistent four-to-five win package according to Fangraphs. Over the past four seasons, Hoerner has posted a 105 wRC+. His 123 stolen bases are the fifth-highest total in the majors over that time, and his 17.5 fWAR ranks 18th, tied with Alex Bregman. That’s the sort of player that virtually any team with a hole at second base would like to add, and Hoerner’s $12MM salary for the 2026 campaign is entirely affordable as well for even smaller market clubs. While Hoerner has played second base in deference to Dansby Swanson during the latter’s years in Chicago, he served as the club’s everyday shortstop in 2022 with elite fielding metrics and could surely provide plus defense at the position again if needed.
Speculatively speaking, teams like the Braves, Yankees, and Red Sox would all surely love to bring Hoerner into the fold ahead of his final season before free agency, but it would be surprising to see the Cubs actually deal their star infielder. Hoerner was a key piece of the team that took the Cubs back to the playoffs for the first time in half a decade last year, and the club could be better off simply holding onto him with the hope of either working out an extension before free agency or making him a qualifying offer next winter. After all, the Cubs have no clear internal option to replace Hoerner at the keystone. Jefferson Rojas is the club’s top infield prospect, but the 20-year-old struggled badly in 39 games at Double-A last year and isn’t likely to be ready for the majors in 2026.
Perhaps dealing Hoerner could become a more serious consideration if the club’s rumored interest adding help at third base were to come to fruition. The Cubs have been connected to both Alex Bregman and Eugenio Suarez this winter, and signing one of them would displace Matt Shaw at third base. Shaw, of course, was worth just 1.5 fWAR with a 93 wRC+ last year. That’s hardly a player who needs to be in the lineup on an everyday basis, but Hoyer offered Shaw a vote of confidence earlier this week that would suggest he remains a key part of the club’s plans for 2026. If the Cubs were to add Bregman or Suarez at the hot corner, trading Hoerner and installing Shaw at second base might be the easiest way to keep Shaw in the lineup on a regular basis.
With that being said, Shaw could also simply back up the rest of the infield while splitting time at DH with Moises Ballesteros and Owen Caissie, serving as a right-handed complement to those big lefty bats. Even if an addition at third base happens, it certainly wouldn’t indicate that the Cubs would need to trade Hoerner. On the other hand, doing so could provide an alternative pathway to bringing in rotation help this winter if Chicago finds itself unable to lure in one of the top starters available in free agency. The Cubs have made no secret of their desire to bolster the club’s rotation this winter, and reuniting with Shota Imanaga after he accepted a qualifying offer won’t be enough.

I personally think the Cubs would be nuts to trade Hoerner. I’d take him on the Reds in a minute.
The Cubs do some nutty stuff. Look at last year. Trade Belli for nothing in return other than a salary dump . Then trade team controlled Isaac Paredes, Hayden Wesneski, and a higher level prospect Cam Smith to Houston for 1 year of Tucker.
And after starting out hot Smith, while still quite young, is at best #5 OF in Hou, Paredes couldn’t hit at Wrigley and Ski got hurt. Yeah Tucker sucked the last couple of months but the Cubs gave it a shot, better than holding on to all this supposed talent and doing nothing!
Yeah, I dont think the Cubs have any reason to be upset over losing any of them. Would have been nice to keep Tucker long term but can’t get mad when a team is boring and get mad when they make big moves too.
I think you can be annoyed that the Tucker trade wasn’t followed by some more ‘all in’ type moves
I always respect a difference on options. Good point Smith struggled and is a younger player. It’s constant adjustments even for senior lever players. Paredes should have been given another full season. It’s rough for some players to adjust to a different team mid season. Wrigley was also a tough place to hit during the 2024 season. True, and sad Wesneski got injured. As far as Belli, didn’t like to see him leave. A true pro, team kind of guy and very versatile. Tucker to me anyway came across as a recluse. Quiet, isolated kind of guy. Demonstrated little personality or intensity. All in all we will never know the outcome if those guys stayed on board. Maybe in some alternate universe or reality.
Fred, thank you. I completely agree with your points, except for Wesneski. I don’t feel he’ll pan out in any way that will make a difference. But Smith would have been at Iowa all last season. And he would be a wonderful mid order bat for us, down the road. And there was nothing wrong with Paredes for last year. He was an effective bat when healthy for the Cubs. And you described Tucker, PERFECTLY.
Plus I’m not sold on Shaw.
This is exactly right. The Tucker trade wasn’t the problem. They just didnt do enough. Especially after Steele went down
The Twins and Nationals are quite high on the 2 guys that they each received for Soroka and .170 hitting Willi Castro. They are an indication of Hoyer shooting from the hip and missing.
Fair point. Should have added another starter. Not that easy though I suppose.
Soroka was a miss and I said so at the time. Castro was a mystery. to me. I thought he was a good player and still do I guess. He stunk here but I’m still wondering if he’s worth re signing. Guess we’ll find out.
See that’s what fans think and that’s why they don’t understand baseball and why they won’t ever be a gm of any team.
Cam is now a relief OF, Hayden had TJS and Paredes is more of a utility man. Tucker had a good season, played 2 months with a broken bone I believe, not sure how the Cubs misdiagnosed that for soo long, maybe on purpose to lower his value in hopes to resign him
Yeah I really like him to. I’d be fine with the Yankees getting him. Great defender and hit could hit a little also.
I agree the Cubs would be nuts to trade him. He’s a solid ballplayer who can run, catch, hit, and gives you a solid at-bat every time. Shades of Nellie Fox, the great White Sox second baseman of the 1950s. In a 19 year career, Fox struck out only 216 times in more than 9200 official at-bats. He averaged more than 600 at-bats a year, but never struck out more than 18 times in the whole season. In 1958, for example. He struck out 11 times in 623 at-bats, or 1.7%. Hoerner is the Fox of the modern era, and he’s just entering his prime. Keep him.
Aloha folks, sorry but I don’t understand this. Jed seems stuck on trying to get Bregman. Let Shaw have his opportunity, keep him at 3rd and Nico in place as a vet that is a good leader for the younger players on the team. BTW guess who led all Cub plays in WAR this season, no it wasn’t Tucker, it was Nico! Get some good pitching like Imai or King and BP help. Mahalo!
The Cubs aren’t trading Nico just to put Shaw at 2B. That would be insanely dumb.
That wouldn’t be the goal, just the result. They’d be trading Nico to bring back more talent for a longer time.
If the right deal emerges have to consider it. Especially if the Cubs sign Suarez or Bregman.
@PapiShango:
Alex Bregman or bust between the 2 free agent third baseman. The Cubs value defense which Eugenio Suárez lacks in spades at the hot corner. I’d take Bregman in a heart beat but would rather have Matt Shaw and his long term potential at 3B (or 2B if Nico Hoerner departs) over Suárez with his poor defense, lack of OBP and huge SO numbers.
All that said, the Cubs need to extend Nico Horner.
Aaron, Suarez would mostly DH once they move on from Suzuki after 2026. Even this year, Suarez would DH against LHP, Shaw would play 3B, and Suzuki would give either Caissie or Happ a day off against LHP.
And I’d rather re-sign Hoerner and have Hoerner+Suarez in 2027 and 2028 than Bregman plus a Justin Turner type.
If the Cubs are intent on tying up their future DH I’d rather it be the cheaper and more balanced bat of Moisés Ballesteros over an aging low OBP strike out machine like Eugenio Suárez.
As for 2026, I’d still prefer Seiya Suzuki as a part time option in the DH role along with being a semi-regular in RF with Owen Caissie if the Cubs decide to trade Ballesteros for some much needed pitching.
I’m fairly confident that Jed Hoyer will learn from last year’s mistake with his lack of quality bench options. Signing Alex Bregman would allow Matt Shaw to be a versatile depth piece in 2026. If no major moves are made with the lineup then Ballesteros, Caissie or even Michael Busch could be available later in games when a tough left-handed pitcher starts versus the Cubs. That’s a whole lot of left-handed punch available to Craig Counsell.
I remain confident that Hoyer will still add a more balanced right-handed bat to the mix if Bregman goes elsewhere. That could be Japanese FA 3B/1B Kazuma Okamoto who would be a huge long term upgrade over Justin Turner.
Aaron, I agree. I would’ve been more than happy to see the Cubs acquire Suarez at the deadline, of course depending on the cost, but he’s a less than ideal fit for the Cubs on a multiyear deal. Below par defense and high K, low BB offense. No thanks, I’ll take Shaw with his offensive potential and strong defense and base running.
I got to see a lot of Suarez living in Arizona. He is extremely streaky. 10 HRs one week and none for 4 weeks in a row. Cubs don’t want that.
I could see them trading Nico for a pitcher, moving Shaw to 2B and then signing Bregman. They get worse at 2B, but they get much much better at 3B and a good SP.
Aloha Ryan, I hear you. This past season both Bregman and Shaw played about the same amount of games at 3B. Alex had a war of 3.5 and the rookie projected if lucky would get 2.7 but ended up with 3.1! Shaw had to learn a new position and played GG defense there. Plus is learning major league pitching. At 1/30th the cost of Bregman and controllable for the next 5 years, I’d like to stay with Matt at 3B, try to extend Nico and the savings from not signing Bregman or Tucker, use on Imai and say Fairbanks. The cubs have the resources to do this and build a new strong young core with Busch/PCA/Shaw and hopefully Moises and Caissie. Mahalo!
I always believe in give the kids a chance and Shaw certainly earned it. The Cubs shoved him in there by trading all the other 3rd Basemen they had and threw him into a pennant contender. After a rough start and trip down he started to figure it out and now you’re going to ask him to move? I went into the Winter Meetings hoping the Cubs would do little and take a big swing. I was actually encouraged it happened because the best thing they can do now IMO is sign Imai. Give them another playoff caliber arm. As far as the pen goes I expect a couple of the guys from last year to come back. Nobody is leaping to sign them. Pomeranz, Thielbar, Maton replaces Kittredge, You have Hodge and Little and Brown with options, Assad and Wicks around and Wiggins lurking. There are pieces already in place. If the price is right a power arm like Suarez would be nice for sure but Jed has proven he’s not likely to go that way even with the “Supposed” offer to Scott last year. I don’t think this year is push your chips all in just yet. Save some money and wait for the deadline is the best way to go this year I think and let the kids prove themselves one way or another.
Very, very well said Uncle Mike. I think Shaw has a ton of upside.
Well since Suarez just signed that’s out but I did say “Like Suarez” Not him as such. But at 3 and 45 for a 35 year old I would have passed too. That’s a bad gamble IMO.
Aloha uncle, I’m with you 100%! Jed traded away all our 3B options for a 1 yr rental, nothing against tucker. Throws Shaw into the pool and tells him to swim, new position at 3B! He was projected if lucky to get 2.7 war but exceeds that with 3.1! Don’t waste the money on Bregman, trading away Nico and moving Shaw, it’s not an upgrade. Spend some money on Imai please and let the young infield of Busch and Shaw continue to get better with the vets Nico and Dansby, could be the best infield of all of baseball and help get more wins! Maybe the FO goes after Fairbanks. And let Moises and Caissie have their opportunities. Mahalo!
There’s a lot more at stake than this year I think. Jed and Ricketts have set this up the way they wanted. Now comes the bad part. You have 3/4 of the team on expiring deals and you have a bunch of kids you have to find out about and see if they can play. Taillion, Boyd, Imanaga, Seiya , Happ, Hoerner ALL on expiring deals. Then you have to decide WHICH ONES you want to re sign or not and which ones you can replace with who. To my mind they have painted themselves into a corner and have to play these kids to see how they fare. They made the decision and waiting for a new CBA might bite them in the end.
Aloha Uncle, I hear you about this. I would like if Nico, Happ and Seiya do well in 2026, consider an extension maybe midway through the season. Now if Happ for example wants to go into FA and Caissie shows he can play good defense and make adjustments at the plate, then he could be an option at LF. I like Imanaga and Boyd, I hope they have good seasons and possibly receive an extension. But also you and I want Imai. This is important because if they can sign him, then you know 2027 or not, we’d have Steele, Horton and Imai. Boyd might have an option for 2027. But yes, good questions. Mahalo!
Cubs will extend Nico. He’s too important to their offense and defense. This is likely just posturing.
I personally think they are trying to take the wind out of the sails with the cardinals Donovan trade…just a thought
There are too many of these “reports” that usually include some sort of comment that “nothing is imminent.” I understand the PR side from the teams’ perspective to let their fans they’re working away. And the media outlets have to post SOMETHING for us to click on, but seeing a “report” on Seager the other day and now Hoerner. Neither of those guys are going anywhere. C’mon…
I imagine the teams or agents just provide little nuggets to their beat guys just to give them something to write about. There is usually little to no substance, but it’s all about the clicks.
I wonder if Rosenthal, Heyman et al get these notes and just automatically push them out. Or do they qualify them first? It’s a strange landscape these days and it’s creating some pretty shallow information.
Yeah but basketball and football kinda suck so I’m here for it
The same also happened with the Kyle Teel trade “rumor” yesterday. The still rebuilding White Sox would be even less inclined to trade a controllable cornerstone catcher than seeing the Cubs deal Nico Hoerner or the Rangers trading Corey Seager.
If the cubs dont want to pay for a Top tier SP or extend Nico, they have to consider trading him.
Ideally they can get a front of the rotation starter w a little control and then spend big money on Bo Bichette.
Bichette + tor pitcher > Nico + jed dumpster diving for a starter
I wish they would just keep Nico n sign Imai n Bo. They could do it
If the Cubs extend Nico Hoerner they would be much better off signing Alex Bregman to play 3B over a more expensive and defensively challenged Bo Bichette at the hot corner. I’m with you on the Cubs prioritizing Japanese ace Tatsuya Imai.
Imai was my choice for the Cubs among all the free SP’s in the FA Prediction Contest. I also have the Cubs inking fellow countryman Kazuma Okamoto who could play 3B and also be a right-handed hitting complement for Michael Busch at 1B. I didn’t have much faith in Tom Ricketts ponying up for Bregman this offseason but would be thrilled to be wrong.
I don’t think they’ll pony up for Imai or Okamoto either.
Please do not trade Nico. Extend him. Don’t trade him. Best defensive 2B in baseball.
He’s very valuable right now as a SS…folks that don’t want to pay Bichette to move over or Ha-Seong Kim to a multi-year deal with some risks…
Really hope AA is in on this.
If the Cubs trade Nico, me and about a million other Cub fans will be royally ticked off.
Lovable Losers? The stadium will fill either way…
That moniker went away after Yasiel Puig rolled over to Addison Russell at SS on the first pitch from Aroldis Chapman. Russell to Baez to Rizzo. And the Cubs win the Pennant. Remember the “curse of the Billy goat” was put on the Cubs and they would never play in another world series. That’s one reason why the Cubs winning is such a historical thing. Ended two very long streaking. Getting to the world series and ending a championship drought. A drought we will never see again.
Ironically the goats name was Murphy. As many would remember Daniel Murphy in 2015 became Baby Babe Ruth. It’s ironic because back to the future nearly predicted the Cubs winning. The world series in 2015. Daniel Murphy was the new temporary curse
Eff no! Don’t even entertain the offer Hoyer! Nico should be extended,,,,
I think there is a near zero percent chance they trade him.
What did we see 3 major signings during the winter meetings? Zero trades?
Market is moving slowly and speculation is all people have to talk about.
True, a lot of smoke, no fire.
Extend Hoerner now
How about:
2027 to 2030, four years at $18 million a year, for a total of $72 million, nothing deferred, no trade clause for first three years.
Why does MLBTR write articles about things that definitely aren’t going to happen?
You clicked on the article, didn’t you?
Heck he came to THIS website!
Not rocket science…
First paragraph of the article.:
“The report emphasizes that while president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer gauges the market value of virtually every player on the roster during the offseason, that shouldn’t be taken as an indication the Cubs intend to move Hoerner.”
Title of the article:
“Nico Hoerner Drawing Trade Interest”
This site literally has the words “trade rumors” in its name, which is exactly what this is, a rumor.
@ Alan
Nothing else is happening & writers gotta write to get paid.
Alan, it’s a trade RUMORS website. They’re doing their job. Nowhere does it state specifics of a proposed trade or that one is close to being completed.
I’m sure teams have inquired about Nico’s availability, given his contract status and no reports of extension talks; not to mention the Cubs have Shaw who could conceivably replace him, if needed.
“ That’s hardly a player who needs to be in the lineup on an everyday basis”
I guess Shaw is who is at 24 years old, after one season in the league. Thanks for the insight.
People act like Shaw is inadequate. The man has less than 400 MLB at bats. He’s a rookie folks. His future is very bright. Had to learn a new position at the MLB level and was a gold glove finalist. Was sent down to. change his swing mid season and still ended up with 21 doubles, 3 triples,13 HRs and 17 steals. All this with 393 at bats. Let the guy play.
Totally agree, Natural. I like Nico, but Shaw probably has more upside and will likely outhit him next season (not for average or contact rates, but in just about every other way).
Also, Shaw’s defense and baserunning aren’t that much of a dropoff from Nico’s.
Trade Swanson instead and put Nico back at shortstop. Dansby can’t hit good pitching.
Swanson has a no trade clause. He isn’t going anywhere.
He played a big part in our Braves 2021 WS win. He will do some good things for the Cubs.
Before the Semien-Nimmo trade, I really wanted the Mets to trade for Hoerner. Oh, well.
I wonder if the mariners might be trying to pry him away given the insane price the Diamondbacks want for marte
FA agent after ‘26 and is going to be an elite player- but they had to extend mediocrity in LF and wasted a lot on RF. Of course they’ll trade him. Idiotic organization from top to bottom. Especially the goobers from Omaha.
Oh Nico Hoerner.
Me love you long time
If the Cubs are competing they need Hoerner. That’s a solid homegrown player that shouldn’t even entertain moving on from. Lock him up and move on, sheesh. Trade Dansby back to the Braves if you want open things up a bit for a Bregman. Then you can slide Nico over to SS and move Shaw to 2b.
But if they trade him, Yankees should give up any young players, with the exception of only two or three. He would be exactly what they need instead of Volpe.
I’ll be honest, my dude, I kinda don’t want them to trade for another guy on an expiring contract. I like him a lot, but we have zero guarantee of re-signing him. Let’s give up prospects for guys we can hold onto longer like we did with Jazz.
Would the Cubs do Jazz for Hoerner straight up?😀 The Yankees need someone like Hoerner much more than someone like Jazz.
I’m not sure why either team would make this trade.
Let me tell you why the Yankees should do this:
1. Unlike Jazz, Hoerner is a contact hitter who has a .284 batting average over the last three years.
2. Unlike Jazz, he doesn’t strike out, he has the 3rd lowest K% over the last three years.
3. He’s defensively better than Jazz.
4. He’s a right-handed hitter, and the Yankees could really use a good one.
5. His profile brings something to the Yankees lineup that they are simply missing.
6. He’s even faster than Jazz and could steal just as many bases, if not more.
Have you watched Jazz in the playoffs last year and this year? He looked awful almost every time. I never had any hope he’d do anything productive… 1-for-23 with RISP.
The Yankees already have enough boom or bust hitters, a player like Hoerner would bring new energy. With Hoerner, you’re more likely to win than with Jazz, especially when you look at what the Yankees lineup currently looks like.
I can’t believe I even have to explain this.
You could explain till the cows come home, but Nico–and I like him–isn’t a 30/30 guy, and Jazz could even be a 40/40 player if he was healthy and focused. He’s also cheaper which if you haven’t heard is of value.
Now if you told me we could trade McMahon and a good prospect for Hoerner and move Jazz back to 3rd, that would be more interesting.
You could explain till the cows come home
True, because you still wouldn’t get it even then…
See we were conversating and I didn’t agree with you and your response is to insult. Man, why bother.
No, but I did list understandable reasons. I also didn’t say that you should just swap Hoerner and Jazz and leave it at that. I’ve already mentioned several times in other articles that someone like Seager should also be added. A lineup with Seager and Hoerner is just so much better than one with Jazz and Volpe. The Yankees have plenty of power hitters, more than any other team, but with Judge, they basically only have one who should hit over .280, which is a problem, especially when it matters most. A lineup needs to be well balanced, which is why Hoerner would be a very good addition.
But alright, let’s agree that we have different opinions, so be it.
I never understood why the Cubs are dangling this guy like they appear to be (maybe teams are just asking but I recall the same discussions last offseason). He’s a winning player and does the little things a lot of guys in today’s game don’t do. I can’t see the Cubs parting ways with a guy like this and negatively affecting their infield defense big time with no real reliable replacement in house.
Jed,
Pick up the phone. I know you’re interested in my Volpe + Jake Bird offer. The offer only goes down from here. Tx
Love,
BC
Only way i see this happening if they had serious interest in bo bichette..which as much as i love nico..i could get on board with that..bo provides alot more pop..and would similar output that tucker did..in the case it would make sense..as someone mentioned earlier u could flip nico for pitching help..then it becomes a net postive to make that deal..and i have no doubt there would be a ton of teams in a deal for nico..hard part would be finding a team willing to give up a quality starter..maybe you could try getting gore..nico and a kicker of some sort might get it done
Shaw at DH? Just give away at bats.
If they could sign Bregman, then I could see Nico in a package for Skubal. I don’t think Swanson would get anything in a trade.
Shaw’s an interesting case. MLBTR scorns him because FanGraphs doesn’t like him. Baseball Reference is much more bullish on Shaw with 3.1 WAR in 2025. As usual, it’s disagreement on the defensive evaluation.
My own eye test on Shaw is that B-R is a lot closer than FanGraphs to the truth. He looks like a definitely plus defender to me. Don’t expect MLBTR to change their opinion because they just follow FanGraphs slavishly. But Shaw seems very much like an everyday player.
My eye test aligns with yours. I think Shaw has shown a lot of rookie progress, but still a rookie. His presence at third has to be taken in the context of the rest of the team and how the Cubs are poised to be winning today. If they let Tucker go and replace him with Caissie, then you’ve basically got three rookies on our team: Caissie, Shaw, and PCA. That’s a lot of inexperience on a team that’s poised to be winning now. PCA should improve in his next true full year in the majors. Caissie will be raw and may not even stick for the full year. If the Cubs can hold steady at all other positions (including keeping/extending Hoerner), then the opportunity to upgrade at third by trading Shaw to bring in someone like Bregman would be an immediate upgrade. But acknowledging that upgrade doesn’t diminish Shaw’s promise or his contributions to date.
But the luxury of going into a new season and allowing Shaw to grow as a rookie is a lot more difficult if we’re also doing the same in RF and CF *and* trying to win now.
I’m a Bregman skeptic. 3.5 bWAR in 2025 – about the same as Shaw, incidentally – and he’s not getting any younger. He’s never come close to duplicating his big seasons in 2018 (trash can!) and 2019 and I would be very leary of giving him a long-term deal.
Since nobody seems to be rushing to give Bregman a lot of dollars and years, maybe I’m not alone in my skepticism.
Hoerner is fantastic. Diamondbacks are shopping Ketel Marte
because of bad club house vibe or some other none performance issue. Worst things could happen to the Cubs if a second player along with Hoerner went to ARI
“Shaw, of course, was worth just 1.5 fWAR with a 93 wRC+ last year. That’s hardly a player who needs to be in the lineup on an everyday basis” – that’s pretty harsh for a Rookie and includes his very rough start to the year…..
What do you expect? FanGraphs dumps on Shaw and MLBTR always follows FanGraphs. In fact, Shaw looks like a plus defender and his .690 OPS was hardly horrible in an extreme pitchers park like Wrigley. (If you don’t believe that Wrigley has become an extreme pitchers park, check the park factors for the last three years.)
Cole Young and Castillo for Nico. Future 2nd baseman and Luis would slot in at the top of the rotation.
I second that
If the Cubs trade Nico for prospects, they may as well surrender the division to the Brewers again.
the division belongs to Milwaukee no matter what Cubs do, and no matter what Brewers do. This is inevitable.
opposing teams are aware that Cubs won’t be paying for anyone, and Hoerner will command a large contract in a year.
Every team should want Hoerner.Makes solid contact. He walks,He plays good defense. He runs well.I say that as every team has a roster full of swing for the fences guys.Every team need a contact guy.Actually a few of them but there aren’t many.
Hoerner is exactly what the Yankees need. A leadoff high contact fast gold glove right handed hitter. He checks every box unfortunately what the Cubs need which is pitching is exactly what Yanks can’t afford to give up.
If the Yankees can deal Jazz a 30/30 4.4 War top five 2nd baseman and get a few solid top 10 prospects and turn around and deal them for Hoerner maybe in a 3 team trade that would be ideal!
A mock trade such as Yanks send Luis Gil to Cubs and Jazz Chisholm to Phillies. Phillies send Bryce Stott to Yankees and prospect to Cubs. Cubs send Nico to Yankees.
Yanks get Hoerner and Stott
Cubs get young ROY and starter Luis Gil and 1 pitching prospect from Phills
Phillies get Jazz to bring another middle order left handed bat
The guardians were close to getting nico horner and justin steele at 2024 trade deadline. The cubs backed out at the last minute. The guardians were offering good young prospects like delauter, clemmeny, ralphly valasuez, and others.
WHAT ARE WE DOING
Does D Swanson have a no teade clause?
Yes
Nightmare
Don’t trade Nico and let Shaw play third till the end of season. Both are good fielders. Shaw can handle 3rd as well or better than what’s available out there. Bregman is a good player, but do we want to pay for the several years in the future when he would be albatross on the payroll?
Fans forget that Ryne Sandberg and Mike Schmidt had horrible numbers for the first part of their careers…They were already to field the position, when they came up, but hitting for average took a bit of time to adjust their hitting abilities.
I feel it will payoff big for the Cubs if we let Shaw at 3rd and give his bat time to adjust. We could have a tremendous player if he works it out. As for Nico, extend him, he’s worth more than what we might get if the Cubs traded him.
I see that all the top free agent pitchers are demandindi 4+ years, which should leave out the cubs. Looks as if the cubs will bring in the bottom of the barrel leftovers when their asking price were to come down.
And whatever the cubs do with hoerner won’t be good enough because they won’t ever get back enough return as they will right now after the year he had. Especially one with an expiring contract.
The cubs lack of aggressiveness this off season is bewildering to say the least when their competitive window fall s off the cliff in a year.
