The Phillies and right-handed reliever Brad Keller are in agreement on a two-year, $22MM contract, reports ESPN’s Jesse Rogers. The deal is pending a physical. Fansided’s Robert Murray first reported that the two parties were nearing an agreement. Keller, who is represented by Excel Sports Management, received some interest as a starter but will be used as a reliever in Philadelphia, per Joel Sherman of the New York Post.
Keller, 30, was a solid starter with the Royals early in his career after being picked up from the D-backs in the 2017 Rule 5 Draft. After a nice run of three seasons, his numbers took a sharp decline, due largely to the complete erosion of his command. After walking 45 batters in 45 1/3 innings in 2023, Keller was diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome. A comeback effort in 2024 didn’t pan out well, as he pitched to a 5.44 ERA in 41 1/3 frames between the Red Sox and White Sox, but Keller completely remade himself as a high-end bullpen weapon with the Cubs in 2025 after signing a minor league contract.
In 69 2/3 innings this past season, Keller was dominant. His 2.07 ERA tied him for 13th-best among 147 qualified relievers. The 6’5″, 255-pound righty set down 27.2% of his opponents on strikes and notched a sharp 8% walk rate. Keller had sat 92-94 mph as a starter and even in bullpen work with the White Sox and Red Sox in ’24, but his sinker averaged a career-best 96.7 mph in 2025 and his four-seamer clocked in even higher at 97.2 mph. His 56.1% ground-ball rate was a career-best mark, and opponents had an extremely rough time squaring up any of his pitches. His 86.7 mph average exit velocity and 30.6% hard-hit rate were far and away the lowest marks of his career.
There are at least some modest red flags with regard to Keller. His 10.8% swinging-strike is actually below the league average and doesn’t support his well above-average strikeout rate. The quality of his stuff clearly improved, just as the quality of his opponents’ contact deteriorated, but it’s still unlikely that he’ll sustain a .243 average on balls in play over the course of a full season. However, even with some regression in terms of BABIP and strikeout rate, Keller still looks the part of a quality bullpen arm who’ll support an improved late-inning relief contingent for the next two seasons.
Keller should operate as a setup man to deadline acquisition Jhoan Duran, who came over from Minnesota in exchange for top prospects Eduardo Tait and Mick Abel. He’ll join righty Orion Kerkering and southpaws Jose Alvarado, Matt Strahm and Tanner Banks in what should be a formidable setup corps for manager Rob Thomson. There’s still room for the Phils to add another reliever if a deal to their liking presents itself, but they’re six-deep in largely established relief arms with Keller now in the fold.
The $11MM annual value of the contract pushes the Phillies from the third tier of luxury tax penalization to the fourth and final bracket, per RosterResource’s projections. They were already paying a 95% tax on subsequent additions and were about $7MM from the top tier. Keller places them about $4MM over that line. They’ll pay about $22MM for him this season (assuming an even $11MM per year distribution) rather than that $11MM surface value. Any subsequent additions to the payroll at this point will be taxed at the maximum 110% rate.
More to come.

Huge!
I’d be very wary of a guy who’s been terrible his whole career until his age 30 season. Not saying he can’t replicate what he did last season, but I’d have a hard time relying on that.
Well, the metrics are good and his stuff is a whole lot different as a 1 inning guy than it was as a starter. He was hitting upper 90s routinely as a reliever and his breaking stuff was much sharper as well.
Next report will tell us they are going to start him!
Yeah, and I think 2 and $22 mill. is a very reasonable risk to take.

I wouldn’t debate any of that. I’m just saying he could be a one year wonder. I’m not saying I know that, but I would be concerned about giving him a multi year deal. Two years isn’t a terrible deal. I just wouldn’t know exactly what to expect with this guy.
As long as he stays in the pen, this is a good deal for Philly.
Failed starters going to the bullpen and all of a sudden becoming elite is very common suddenly

Yeah, it’s not uncommon for a guy who’s failed as a starter to be more successful as a reliever. But this guy has been a reliever in the past and has not really had any success until this past season. Sometimes guys figure it out later in their careers, but sometimes they’re one hit wonders.
True. Tug McGraw and Mariano Rivera are two other “failed starters” who did OK out of the bullpen.
He had some decent years in KC early on. Maybe he got back on track.
It’s different with relievers. His role changed. He changed how he pitches. It’s not like it was out of nowhere. He excelled in a new role.
The velo jump was surprising to the level it was. Pitchers typically pick up a couple ticks on their heater out of the pen but he made a 4mph jump.
I like Kyle Wright at 1yr / 2.5M with a pair of team options.
Is that realistic cause I’d take that gamble
I agree with you. I wonder if his delivery was changed. I just remember him as a problem pitcher with a terrible W.H..I.P.
Just a few blocks away!
You’ve arrived.
Nice deal, Phils.
I wonder if this is to be as a SP.
No
I have to think it’s as reliever. They still have Nola, Sanchez, Luzardo, Walker, Painter, and of course Wheeler
Wheeler is out to begin the season and Walker was a swingman last year.
I like Keller a whole lot more out of the pen but they’re losing Suarez and all of those innings. Painter wasn’t nearly as sharp last year in the minors.
Painter was in his first year after Tommy John Surgery which usually takes a while to regain sharpness. He did pitch quite well in the Fall Arizona League which may mean he’s finding his way again.
For sure. DD usually gives his team options if he doesn’t though.
Hard to know what to make of him, but the Phillies don’t hand out a lot of multi-year contracts to RP, so they must quite like him.
What do you think 2/20-25?
Feels like a lot honestly, but if they think he can keep being a leverage guy, I’m inclined to trust the scouts on that.
Do we know for sure it’s as a reliever? They definitely have a need for rotation innings.
I’d assume so, painter is gonna step in.
Wheeler won’t be ready to start the season though. Taijuan Walker would currently be in the rotation.
I personally wouldn’t pull Keller out of the pen because he looked much different but I was wondering considering the rumors and Phillies need.
They could always just go sign another dude.
Yeah. Only was curious because it was rumored and is becoming a more frequent occurrence.
To me the Phils only have 3 starters etched in right now with Luzardo, Nola, and Sanchez. Wheeler when he’s back but that might be a few months in. Painter is a good candidate but didn’t look the same in AAA. Walker is a fine #6 but not really someone you want to have in the opening day rotation at this point.
It is a fair bet that he can be a solid RH back of the pen arm. No bullpen arms are sure things overall, but he was one of the guys that i hoped that they would look at.
Now when they look at Duran / Alvarado / Kerkering / Strahm / Keller and Banks they have one of the more solid groups in baseball. Plus they have some younger arms that hopefully work their way into the mix. The pen is a far cry from a few years ago as far as being a potentially strong playoff grouping.
Wow nice
“Close to signing a contract”
It hasn’t happened yet.
Well while I was writing it changed. Huge signing Phillies winning WS would be fine.
Nice addition to the Phillies bullpen
That’s a nice signing
Let’s go Cashman sign Fairbanks and Weaver
Weaver’s out and i imagine Fairbanks wants to close, which he won’t do with the Yankees unless they are willing to pay him Closer money
Mets signed Weaver
Nice righty bullpen arm, but obviously it depends on what the deal is.
I like it. Showed he could be a high leverage arm in the bullpen last year. It fits exactly what phils need. Still need another arm for the pen though.
Dom
Man, Luke Weaver just started doing backflips in his living room.
This screams meh for me
Very legal and very cool
He was a reliable pen piece for the Cubs but no way Hoyer was paying that price. Good signing for the Phillies.
Brian Cashman’s phone must still be on DND
It’s a moot point, but I’m curious to know how far Hoyer was willing to go to bring him back. It felt like Big Brad might find his way back to the North Side, but I guess it wasn’t meant to be. I’m curious to see how the rest of the bullpen gets pieced together.
Cheap Cubs are gonna regret this
Wow. That is way more than i expected for Keller.
oof! Good signing
Aloha folks, sad to see him go but happy for him. I wish him well with the Phillies. Mahalo
He deserved a big raise and I didn’t really expect the Cubs to make it happen. They’ll keep looking for another project unless they think Snider is it. I’d still like to see them sign somebody but the price tag should be about the same. Might save a couple of million here or there. Either that or the Cubs are counting on Hodge, Brown or Assad to step up. We’ll see.
Another fumble by Jed
He makes the Phillies bullpen worse. Awful reliever and I don’t understand how he keeps getting chances
He would have been a great 8th inning guy for the Mets. Excellent reliever.
LFG Mets-Huh? Sour grapes or drug use? Just curious.
I’m not sure he’s ever made a comment that made any sense whatsoever.
Well, he was really good last year…so maybe that’s why.
Oh interesting, this seems like a smart play for their bullpen. It’s not crazy money for a team like Philly.
22 million for 2 years is popular right now.
A+ If no opt outs. 2 years instead of 1. Someone should have gone 3 to get him.
And the Cubs let another great arm move on …
Wonder if the Ricketts will ever untie the ropes from Jed’s hands🤷🏻
