Diamondbacks GM Mike Hazen said at the end of December that the club was “shortly” going to cease all trade talks involving second baseman Ketel Marte, and the unofficial deadline apparently came on January 9, once reports emerged that Marte would be staying put. Probably unsurprisingly, this didn’t end the trade speculation entirely, but even as the offseason player market has continued to evolve just over the last eight days, Hazen has maintained his stance that discussions are over.
“We’ve already engaged in that process. I said at the time that I set the deadline for a reason, to avoid this,” Hazen told MLB.com’s Steve Gilbert and other reporters. Hazen also noted that by telling both Marte and rival executives that trade talks have ended, he’d be risking his credibility (both with D’Backs players and in future negotiations) by going back on his word now.
It is worth noting that there have been several instances in the past of players being traded after a front office exec has seemingly shut down trade discussions — perhaps the most famous in recent years was Nationals GM Mike Rizzo declaring “we are not trading Juan Soto” two months before Soto was indeed dealt to the Padres at the 2022 trade deadline. It is also fair to assume that Hazen would have a hard time saying no if another team emerged in the coming days with a Marte trade offer that was absurdly tilted in Arizona’s favor.
That said, there is no reason to doubt Hazen’s resolve in this case. While some reports emerged last summer about clubhouse discontent directed towards Marte, it never seemed too likely that the Diamondbacks would trade a star player they signed to another long-term extension just last April. This new extension (covering the 2025-31 seasons) overwrote Marte’s previous deal that ran through the 2027 campaign, and added $64MM in new money.
$102.5MM remains on the final six years of the contract, and if Marte was a free agent this winter, he would’ve topped that number even as his enters his age-32 season. This relative discount price made Marte an attractive alternative for teams who may not have been wowed by free agent options, or weren’t willing to meet the asking prices of players on the market. Such teams as the Red Sox, Tigers, Blue Jays, Mariners, Rays, Phillies, Pirates, and Giants were publicly linked to Marte’s trade market, though Pittsburgh and San Francisco are two of the five teams on Marte’s no-trade list.
The Pirates may have been out on Marte anyway after acquiring Brandon Lowe to address their second base needs. The same could be true of the Rays (after acquiring Gavin Lux) and the Jays (after adding Kazuma Okamoto to the infield mix), but the other rumored suitors could conceivably be in play if the Diamondbacks still had any appetite for a Marte deal.
Most notably, the Red Sox and Phillies fell short in their respective pursuits of Alex Bregman and Bo Bichette, leaving those two teams perhaps most keen on another big-ticket infield upgrade. For the Sox in particular, Gilbert noted that Boston’s signing of Ranger Suarez signing led to a lot of D’Backs fans immediately wondering if the Red Sox would now be more comfortable in sending controllable pitching to Arizona for Marte.
On the flip side, of course, any increased desperation on the part of other teams might cause Hazen to increase what was already known to be a very high asking price for Marte’s services. But, the time for haggling now seems to be over on Hazen’s part, and (barring any unexpected developments) it seems like Marte will simply return to the heart of the Diamondbacks’ lineup in 2026.

Reminds me of when my second wife promised me her new sommelier was just a friend.
Everything happens for a Riesling.
It’s my own fault really, I had a dame in every port.
You must be wine in a million.
Sometimes it’s best to just put a cork in it.
He’s not that grape. Pour girls, really.
Many more of these and we will fall into a grape depression.

That’s what happens when you let your Pinot get Grigio, Running around with any Sherry or Rosé you can find. And don’t even think about getting a Prosecco because the good ones can cost a lot of money and you do not want to get one of them pregnant. Some day you could get a call from some child you didn’t know you had and you’ll draw a complete Sauvignon Blanc as to who the mother actually was…
Nice work, ChatGPT
Is that what the kids are using AI for these days? Tortured wine puns?

Brandy, you’re a fine girl.

Finally.
Boston fans down bad.
Nah. We’ve given up enough in trades this offseason already, not looking to offload Tolle/Early/Duran/Mayer/Greg Blosser etc for a meh player.
We are gonna roll w Jody Reed.
Jody Reed? Sam Kennedy said high hopes for Doug Griffin.
Darkhorse, Remy replaced Griffin twice. Remy first becoming an Angel is how Boston first got Griffen. Then Remy was traded for Don Aase.
Na, I don’t want him on the Sox. Guy has given up on his team a few times in the past few years. Don’t need a head case around the young Sox players.
Joemo, trying to win in 26 and if the price was right, a change of scenery might help. The man can both hit and field. If he was such a head case, AZ would not be trying to get that extra return that stopped discussions last time.
Dewey – if he wasn’t an issue in the clubhouse, they wouldn’t have considered trading him at all.
I mean maybe I’m wrong. But there’s been multiple incidents with him. If it was a one off, I’d definitely risk it.
I dislike Chapman but apparently he’s good in the clubhouse, so what do I know. I’m just glad I can have a discussion about it.
Oh no he took a few extra days off he’s such a cancer. Hey, remember when David Ortiz smashed up the dugout with a bat during a game?
They need to stop Hazen that man.
There’s a big difference between mackingna phone a couple times and leavin your team, and teammates, high and dry during whatever was a critical stretch in deciding whether youbwere a WC contender
It was multiple incidents at key parts of his teams season. The Sox preached leadership with Bregman.
I’ll gladly be wrong though.
Ortiz could have hurt himself pulling a muscle bashing that dugout phone, or hurt somebody else if they were unfortunate enough to be too close to him while he was swinging wildly, and that is a risk that would have cost his team a bunch of games too.
I dunno about you though, but if my house got broken into while I was away with my family I’d take a couple extra days off work to deal with that.
Per the ESPN article about the situation: “The 31-year-old said he initially expected to return to Phoenix immediately following the break but was “frustrated” and “in a bad spot” after he learned his residence in Scottsdale, Arizona, had been burglarized during the break, according to the interpreter.”
espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/46011679/d-backs-star-kete…
So for all intents and purposes he wanted to get back on the field as soon as possible but was too stressed out from being a victim of a very serious crime to think about baseball for a few days. These guys are professionals who are the best of the best to play the game but we have to understand they’re not robots either.
Multiple incidents being what exactly? Him following the team doctor’s advice of taking scheduled days off to stay healthy? Him dealing with the stress of having his home burglarized? A stressed out and chronically injured Marte isn’t any better for AZ’s playoff odds. The fact is that the DBacks didn’t have enough talent around him to pick up the slack.
It wasn’t going to his house that was the problem.
It was jumping an airplane and taking a mid-season vacation to the Dominican for several days, missing games, without team permission that was.
There are some folks who don’t understand that No means No.
Grab ‘em by the Marte
King’s ransom. His AAV over six years is 16-17M which is crazy value even when factoring in his inevitable decline.
Time for Boston to make an offer they can’t refuse. How about Duran and Early?
It’s going to take a lot more than that IMHO.
Bwahahahahaha
Duran and Early will get Skubal.
It’s a three way trade with the Phillies involving Jhoan Duran. That way the Diamondbacks get Early Duran Duran.
They traded 2 top 100 prospects for him. Why would they trade Duran (Jhoan)
Generational divide.
Contractual controlnover early duran duran wouldve made someone a very very rich man
Especially with lesser players like Bo Bichette making $42M per year to play a position they will almost certainly be a disaster at.
If the Mets keep Baty, don’t be surprised if Bichette DH’s more often than not. I’m sure it was discussed during negotiations.
Ketel taken off hot stove
Boston fans your infield options are dwindling. Good job by Hazen.
They are still a playoff caliber team right now if they stay with on house options
Well yeah I know.
Boston should wait until the spring training begins. They have an excess of what most teams dream about big league ready controllable pitching. See if there is an injury in spring training that makes a team desperate for pitching. I mean Duran and Early is too much imo for Marte but I’m sure Arizona fans would want more. The Red Sox pitching is absolutely loaded and they will have the most ammo on controllable pitching at the deadline plus they will already have a good look at Witherspoon who’s likely to start in AA Portland. He hasn’t pitched professionally but he’s said to have four 60 grade pitches that’s crazy let’s see if that’s the case plus he throws it out of his ear like Crawford very deceptive might be another Tolle who rockets up and is viable in the big leagues by the end of the year. No need to overreach for a trade right away keep your pitching depth and see what happens. It’s a long baseball season.
Speaking of injuries, what happens if it’s Duran? If a reasonable offer can be completed, it’s best for the team to make it and move on.
And what if … the world ended or aliens invaded ? The point is compared to other AL East teams the Red Sox have improved over the Hot Stove without losing primary assets . That can’t be said for their opponents. Yes, Blue Jays added Cease ,another SP and a 3B but non are certainties and lost Bo. Baltimore added Alonso but no pitching , NYY so far have done zero – and lost (for now a big bat) whereas Sox lost essentially Bregman – added 3 SPs , a above average 1B and get back Casas too. They’re stronger now than the team that went to the WS and nearly beat the Dodgers .
Better staying and seeing if Meyer can handle 3B or 2B and possibly give reps to Casas too for 3B or sign a plate filler on 2 year deal
It’s not like they’re doomed without an addition, but I wouldn’t be shocked if the got geno.
Boston
I wouldn’t be entirely surprised, but it would still be shocking for them to have almost a 300MM payroll.
This is the year to do it since most likely penalties will reset when the new CBA is agreed to like I believe it has every other time.
That might Bruin explain the inflated short term deals just completed by the Dodgers and Mets.
That would be a hell of a loophole
Duran/Early/Yoshida +$10 million
For
Marte
I’m feeling like in 2027 the Sox next best pitcher being Crochet will be Early. For that reason I’d not include him in any trade talks that weren’t with the Tiger.
Early has been chronically underrated for the last two years. ErHe strikes guys out at every level he hits, he gets well above average-ground ball rates at every level, he misses barrels and gets soft contact at every level. He also has a 6 pitch mix that can go north, south, east, and west. He doesn’t have the sexy fastball but sometimes a pitcher that knows how to pitch is better than most think at every level. He will finally be a top 100 prospect but I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s the rookie of the year this year. It would be a mistake to trade Connelly Early.
I mean the dude already said NOT HAPPENING. Amazing how he needs to have spell it out again. People love making up stories to fit their narrative.
And reporters are desperate for news.
It’s not just reporters, see any comment thread here, including this one!, Marte keeps getting named as a possible trade target by fans of whatever team. Like zero respect to the words of the GM, who would be blasted to the moon if he traded him after he said he wouldn’t right now. At the deadline is a different story, now? No way and it’s been no way.
Haven’t you negotiated before? Your last decision is final until it isn’t. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve told a mediator my offer was final only to make an additional offer after getting the other side down to a number I thought was more reasonable.
He can veto any trade at the “deadline” he’ll have 10-5 rights in April. Marte get those rights on the tenth day of the 2026 season.
The amount of “misinformation” before the season is partly for the fan base to buy season tickets (rebuild teams and let’s *give up on 2026* don’t sell many) but also trades are never done in public . Because half the job of a GM is get the best deal and if you trade partner knows he is the only buyer then the price (players offered) drops. Hazen, isn’t a rookie, so claiming untradeable = *high price and getting higher* as more and more FA’s sign – Bichette off the market at 42 million per annum just added a top 100 prospect to any potential deal discussion.
Probably got tired of all the low ball offers
What did he expect after releasing a statement that Marte took a week off because his mom died eight years ago?
He’d be foolish not to put him on the block again after Bichette and Bregman are taken.
Why? They have a good player, team friendly contract. Strong no trade clause limiting options.
There’s has never been a good reason to trade Marte. His production is top drawer and his contract is very team friendly. The Snakes. don’t look like a playoff team on paper. They didn’t after the midseason last year but they were still in it for a long time.
You don’t win a playoff spot in the off season, on paper. You win nit on the field.
There is an outside ahot that the Diamondbacks are competitive but likely fourth best in thr NL East. Its a good deal of money to save in trading Marte and the D’Backs could potentially grab a sweeter pot but it isnt worth waffling on keeping Marte.
Marte is a franchise player, as good as Bregman, Tucker and Bichette.
He has an incentive-laden contract that adds significantly to his AAV and will be playing for that bonus. Keeping Marte is the best option for the D’Backs, the return would have to be staggering to trade him at this point.
Trading him at the deadline requires a staggering return too. He still has four years of control at what is seemingly a tremendous bargain.
I wonder if Hazen did not have his fingers crossed when he made that statement, that he would not go back on his word that the Marte trade discussions are over right now. Especially that Marte can cash in on the 10-5 element where he would have to approve any trade if the D’Backs did find a trading partner.
As far as the D’Backs contending this season, they still have not fixed their bullpen, nor right-handed bat off the bench, so as far as contending I would put them behind the Dodgers, and Giants right now. And this with Lovello on a one-year contract, with no baseball in 2027 rearing its ugly head, I can see this as a build up for 2028. They will be competitive, but I don’t see them making the playoffs in 2026.
Not sure the logic in discuss this publicly. They obviously had a high price tag on him and couldn’t get a deal done. What if someone comes back w an offer they would’ve accepted or even better? I assume they would still move him for the right deal. Just makes them look worse then if they do move him.
You discuss it with you’re being hounded by writers and fans
You say…..Yeah. Nah. Too late for a new plan. Just as he said above in the article.
Easy.
Translation: we still can’t get close to what we’re asking for so why bother?
After acquiring Arenado you pretty much knew they were keeping Marte. The topic may be revisited in July depending on where the D’backs are in the standings after the All Star break
Ketel won
“Not for those offers,” Hazen adds
Everybody is available for the right price. Everybody….
Chaim Bloom and Brendan Donovan say thank you.
I saw these comments and texted a friend “so Marte gets traded within the week right?” I mean this is kiss of death type stuff. Inevitably he’ll be dealt for less than Diamondback fans think is appropriate and more than fans of the team getting him think is appropriate.
Actually, it will be dependent on offers and more L likely on Arizona’s record in the first 3 months of the season . Miracles happen, where everything clicks and you end up doing a WS run . Happened even to the Marlins TWICE !
Heard the Mets might trade for him. They need another infielder
1B: Polanco/Vientos
2B: Semien/Mauricio/Acuna
3B: Bichette/Baty
SS: Lindor/ Jett Williams on the way
They need another IF?
That’s the joke
Went right over my head lol
There shouldn’t be a comma after “but” when it starts the sentence.
