Mets, Brewers In Conversations About Freddy Peralta

By Anthony Franco | January 21, 2026 at 8:15pm CDT

The Mets and Brewers are in discussions about star right-hander Freddy Peralta, according to reports from Pat Ragazzo of Sports Illustrated and Jon Heyman of The New York Post. There’s no deal in place, but The Post’s Joel Sherman characterizes talks as “serious.” Ragazzo adds that middle infield/center field prospect Jett Williams has come up in conversations.

This morning, Michael Marino reported that Milwaukee was looking to acquire Williams and rookie right-hander Brandon Sproat in a Peralta deal. According to Marino, the Mets rebuffed earlier interest from the Brew Crew in top pitching prospect Jonah Tong. Meanwhile, Sherman adds that swingman Tobias Myers would likely head from Milwaukee to Queens if a deal gets across the finish line.

Peralta has been a top target for teams in need of rotation help. He’s coming off a fifth place Cy Young finish behind 176 2/3 innings of 2.70 ERA ball. The Mets have been in the rotation market all offseason but haven’t been keen on making long-term free agent commitments. President of baseball operations David Stearns reiterated this morning that he still hoped to add a starter (link via Jorge Castillo of ESPN).

Is Peralta a Boras client? If not, they could have a chance to negotiate an extension after the trade, assuming it happens. There is the issue that Stearns hates long-term contracts with pitchers.

Overpay? You have to give something to get something. Peralta is a really good pitcher and I know he only has one year on his deal but is only making $8 million, I believe. If they are not giving up McLean, Benge, or Tong, that’s a victory.

I imagine Peterson would be in a potential Pivetta deal – Pivetta is a better pitcher than nearly all the guys you just listed based off of last year. Padres want to move off that salary and potentially acquire 1-2 other starting pitchers with the money he would be making in 2026 from what I read. I still think the Mets deal Senga in the next few weeks – Baltimore for Mountcastle???

Exactly Seamaholic, Mets have Lindor for 6 more years, Seminen for 3 more years, Reimier in the minors, Elian Pena in the minors. Unless they planned on putting him in the OF which he hasn’t played much in the minors there’s really not a lot of room for him besides a super utility.

Honestly, the Mets trading for Peralta then signing Gallen to a fairly high AAV 2 year deal with an opt out after year 1 feels kind of plausible.

Gallen is the guy left holding the bag this year. Bet he ends up on a pillow. Lot of red flags and he’s been rumored to want 5 years.

He’s just a guy I wouldn’t go over 2 guaranteed years on right now under almost any circumstances. He’s young enough that he could bounce right back and have several more good years ahead of him, but I’m not willing to bet big on it happening at the moment after his ugly 2025.

Why do you say it’s an overpay? Myers is under team control till 2031 and Peralta is a front line SP only making 8M seems very reasonable to me. Sproat could be special but he struggled a lot last year in minors and Jett has potential but more than likely turns out to be just an average starter.

Nearly all of that value is Peralta. Myers is a generic swingman who I’ve followed since the O’s drafted. Likely to be nontendered before all of his control is up. That’d be 2 top 100 guys and I think Sproat has a good chance to be a solid mid rotation starter for a long time.

Peralta and Myers for Sproat, Tong, and Williams is fair. I’d rather have Tong than Sproat since U of F pitchers always turn out to be mediocre at best when compared to their draft position. Singer just passed Desclafani as the best U of F pitcher of all time.

So Tong is needed or they need to supplement the deal to get Myers included.
