The Phillies announced Monday that they’ve hired Don Mattingly as the new bench coach to manager Rob Thomson. President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski acknowledged last month that he’d spoken to Mattingly about the vacancy. Last year’s bench coach, Mike Calitri, changed roles this offseason and became the team’s major league field coordinator. Mattingly has spent the past three seasons as the Blue Jays’ bench coach but chose not to return in that role for the 2026 season as he instead explored other opportunities.
“I am excited to welcome Don Mattingly to Philadelphia,” Thomson said in this morning’s press release. “Having known Don for years and having worked closely with him in New York, I know that his knowledge of the game and his character make him a great addition to our tremendous coaching staff.”
Notably, Mattingly joins an organization that employs his son, Preston, as its general manager. The younger Mattingly isn’t the top decision-maker in Philadelphia’s front office — Dombrowski still holds hat role as the team’s president — but he’s a key figure in baseball operations who spent several seasons as the team’s director of player development and an assistant general manager before being elevated to his current post.
As Thomson noted in his comment, the two men worked together in the Yankees organization, though they didn’t overlap on the team’s major league coaching staff. Thomson actually succeeded Mattingly as bench coach in 2008, after Mattingly accepted an offer to become Joe Torre’s hitting coach in Los Angeles. He’d been in the running for the managerial vacancy in the Bronx that ultimately went to Joe Girardi, who named Thomson his new bench coach.
Even if they weren’t on the same big league staff, however, Mattingly and Thomson worked together with the Yankees. Mattingly was a minor league instructor prior to being added to the big league staff as hitting coach in 2003. During that time, Thomson worked both as a minor league manager and as a key figure in the Yankees’ player development department, where the two aligned to work with the Yankees’ up-and-coming talent.
In addition to his work as a bench coach and hitting coach between the Bronx and L.A., the now-64-year-old Mattingly spent five years managing the Dodgers and another seven managing the Marlins. He then jumped to the Jays, where he was first hired as bench coach and then had the title “offensive coordinator” added to his position. In that role, Mattingly oversaw the hitting coaches up and down the entire organization.
Now bound for Philadelphia, Mattingly will serve as Thomson’s top lieutenant. There’s been some speculation as to how long Thomson will continue to manage, but he signed a one-year extension through the 2027 season following the 2025 campaign, so he’s locked in for at least two more years. Mattingly is actually two years older than Thomson, so he’s not exactly the prototypical younger heir-apparent in waiting, but if Thomson does step away after his current contract, the Phillies would have an experienced option in the organization already. If not, Mattingly simply adds another seasoned coach to a veteran staff full of several well-regarded names.

Love it.
What the article failed to mention was that Mattingly would only take the job if Bichette could tag along with him, right? Joking aside, love it too.
Maybe this is incentive. 😊
Not to mention he is working for his son.
I’m suddenly seeing all kinds of speculation about this, but not confident.
Reds – I said from the beginning there had to be a reason why Don left the Jays if not to become a manager. I’m happy he has the opportunity to work with his son, that’s a great situation for both.
The only holdup in the negotiations revolved around Preston’s insistence that he no longer had a curfew when his dad was around, and that if he had to perform routine chores around the house then his allowance needed to go up.
These nepo parents are gettin’ on my last nerve.
If I were in Preston’s shoes, I would text dad after every loss and tell him that he is fired.
The temptation to mess with dad would be great, for sure.
I used to complain to my umpire dad a lot in little league when he did our games 😂
He could be what Jimmy Williams was to Charlie Manuel. Big reason why the Phillies won in 2008 was a great bench coach.
Donnie Baseball !
As a Sox fan, I always respected Mattingly and about 15 years ago, my ex-boss and I visited a sports hall of fame type museum that opened up in Manhattan (since closed). Mattingly was there and I swear even retired for so many years, he should have been nicknamed Popeye as his arms were huge. By the way Toronto DFAed Diaz again as I’m still getting it when I first go into the app.
Diaz gets DFA’d first thing everyday
In multiple sports
Maybe but as a Dodger fan I can tell you he blows as a manager/coach
Yea you got yourself a real gem with Roberts. The Dodgers won 93 games with that team. Thats a crime against baseball
Mack, sometimes it’s the players. Mattingly has been well respected for so many years. If you were to only complain of his managerial skills, I wouldn’t be writing back. But to mention his coaching abilities as well suggests to me sour grapes because the Dodgers didn’t win during his time there. Many complained of Roberts as well (and some still do)…
I dunno, I along with most Dodger fans think Roberts is doing a great job. Mattingly was there for many years, first the bench coach under Joe Torrey, then the Manager, after never holding any manager position in the lower leagues. He made fundamental mistakes, mismatched the bullpen. He was terrible. When Roberts came in it was like the sun coming up in Seattle after months of darkness
Maybe he can help Marsh to hit lefthanders.
Maybe he can help the Phillies make it back to the World Series within 3 years lol
Yes, go Phillies!
Donnies Back Baby
Donny can really coach that bench!
Just kidding. Nice hire for them.
Donnie certainly knows baseball, any team would probably be happy to have him.
He can coordinate an offense too!
Toronto actually hit in the playoffs so this has to be a positive for the Phils
mike92psu: Only if you actually believe coaches can perform for players.
And if you believe that hitting in the playoffs is different from hitting during the season.
But clutch…
It’s hard to tell with all the different coaching positions they have but I he had less of a role on the hitting approach this past season. They were pretty brutal offenses in 2023 and 2024 when he was the “hitting cordinator”.
Well he knew in the spring the team wasnt going to hit HRs, and the team turned into the best non-strikeout team in baseball. Have to think Mattingly had some input in hitting philosophy, whether or not he was working one-on-one with the players
Topper needs all the help he can get.
I’m thinking it will be a solid pairing.
Talk about a gifted hitter. His career and best years did not last too long, but in his early to mid 20’s he was legendary. Nice to hear he is still around and healthy enough to give some hitting advice!
Wow
Congratulations, Donnie! Stay close, bud! ,)
Maybe slowly working his way back to a New York job down the road.
M-E-T-S?
(since Aaron seems to be bulletproof)
harrycarey: Huh? This has nothing to do with New York, geography notwithstanding.
Great move. Worked together with the Yankees.
With the Phils 2026 edition being a weaker team than that of previous years, Topper has his work cut out for himself, and the Phils owners probably have him on a short leash. I’m not sure how Mattingly looking over his shoulder and grinning is going to help things. “We’ll see,” says the Zen Master.
Why is it automatically a weaker team? Their OF can’t be worse and could be much better if Crawford does anything.
Nepo dad /s
I’m not a Phillies fan, but this is a smart move.
What is a proven curse? Curses are not real. I really want to think you are joking but your comment sounds serious.
“The only explanation why Mattingly hasn’t won a ring is a curse.”
-Very smart person who is definitely right.
All must bow down to Davey Johnson, 2.0
Guy needs a world series championship. Phillies need to make that happen for him.
Took them long enough.
Now sign Bo, re-sign JT, and re-sign Ranger to a 1 yr. Go all in, screw the tax for a year and try to cut costs before the start of the season or by the deadline (Casty, Walker, Bohm).
Girardi, Thomson, Mattingly, seeing a Yankees pattern here.
Now, they should add Jazz Chisolm.
It is a boring addition to the team.
Phillies will feel his age on the bench.
What should he do then? Walk around with an iPad and do whatever the apps tells him to do?
Baseball is just a little better with Mattingly in it.
He was a great player. If he doesn’t have a ring, it says more about the players around him than himself. Again, one player, manager, or coach alone cannot take his team to a title. This is not basketball.
In the 80s and 90s nearly everyone I knew had a Mattingly jersey. Guy could rake. Can’t imagine this being a bad move for the Phils
Surprised they didn’t sign him for 1st base, he’s in his prime for the Phillies.
shack, Mattingly was one of the greatest defensive first basemen of all time.
Should the Yankees ever decide to make an organizational change:
Jeter -GM
Mattingly – Director of player development
A Rod – manager
it’s just a pipe dream but I figured I’d throw it out there so everyone can rip me apart about it
I’d be intrigued by A Rod as manager. It would be a show one way or the other.
I’m a big fan of catchers as managers. Perhaps Posada as the skipper with A Rod as bench coach?
Brilliant move!
Man, to think he was a half step lead from IKF to retiring with a ring.
I really hope that he can go out on top one of these days.
Instant interim manager. Finally a coach on the staff who won’t be afraid to tell topper that the move he is about to make is gonna cost the team the game.
Meanwhile Aaron Boone is still employed….
Mattingly was the best pure hitter of his time at his peak if you were a pitcher and struck him out you kept that ball because it was rare to strike him out. If not for a bad back he wins a ring as a player in 96 but it wasn’t to be . For the Yankees of all teams to retire your number forever shouldn’t be taken lightly……it’s a great move for Philadelphia wish Donnie never left the Yankees that’s where he belongs but working with his son is great too!
Good move. Not great, because I don’t think any coach will matter much with this squad. Maybe he’ll have a positive effect on a few of the hitters, but most of them are too old and experienced for any coach to move the meter. They are who they are. Either the players will play well enough, or they won’t. That said, I can’t see any way for this to be a bad move.
Oh, and for the benefit of the authors of some of the comments above whose tinfoil hats are too tight: curses do not exist. Nothing intangible exists. If you think otherwise, please seek immediate psychological assistance,
As A Jay’s fan I am glad he’s gone. Mattingly as hitting coordinator produced one of the worst offensive teams I have ever seen. Popkins saved this team and Springer loved the “energy” of the new hitting coaches as said in an interview early in the year. Phillies can keep Donny loses at Baseball.
At least learn to spell a bit before attempting to bash Don Mattingly
Go back to hoopsrumors.com, Davey.
Nothing to dislike about this hiring at all. Very solid move. Didn’t realize Thomsen was younger than Mattingly though. Still as said by others my first thought before I read it all was he’ll be a nice transition when Thomsen is done. I think Mattingly was the manager in waiting for Schneider in Toronto also. Schneider is locked into the manager position for as long as he wants now. That wasn’t always the case though. Mattingly probably realized there wasn’t a manager promotion any time soon after the Blue Jays 2025 success. Good move for Phillies fans.
