Yankees, Cubs, Dodgers Have Checked In On Bo Bichette

By Charlie Wright | January 1, 2026 at 4:00pm CDT

Interest in free agent infielder Bo Bichette has mostly been limited to a pair of AL East teams this offseason. Toronto is known to be open to a reunion, while Boston has met with the two-time All-Star over Zoom. Three teams are now joining the Blue Jays and Red Sox in the race for Bichette’s services, as Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports that the Cubs, Yankees, and Dodgers have checked in on him.

New York is one of the few contenders without a concrete plan at shortstop. Anthony Volpe is coming off a brutal season and will miss the beginning of the 2026 campaign following labrum surgery. Utilityman José Caballero will likely cover shortstop until Volpe returns. The Yankees also re-signed Amed Rosario, who has plenty of experience playing up the middle.

Top prospect George Lombard Jr. is a candidate to handle the position in the future, but stepping in as soon as this season would be a tall task for the 20-year-old. Adding Bichette would obviously be a long-term commitment, though he could move to second or third base once Lombard is ready.

The Yankees have been primarily connected to pitchers and outfielders in free agency, but a notable internal development could adjust that approach. Reports emerged in mid-December that the team was listening to offers on infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. With the front office potentially less than enthused about extending Chisholm, who will be a free agent in 2027, flipping him now could make sense. Chisholm’s departure would open up a spot at second base, a position Bichette has said he’d be willing to play.

The case for the Cubs is similar. Chicago doesn’t have an obvious need up the middle, with Dansby Swanson and Nico Hoerner locked in at shortstop and second base, respectively. However, Hoerner is drawing trade interest. The speedy infielder is entering the final season of the three-year, $35MM extension he signed in 2024. Just like with the Yankees and Chisholm, if the Cubs aren’t planning to bring Hoerner back, moving him for other assets would be a sensible path. Hoerner is coming off a strong season in which he hit .297 with 29 stolen bases.

There’s also the third base option. The hot corner has been vaguely mentioned as a defensive landing spot for Bichette, who’s seen his metrics fall off considerably at shortstop. In a separate post mentioning several free agents, including Bichette, Heyman reported that he’s drawing interest at second base, shortstop, and third base. Bichette could be a fallback option of sorts if Chicago comes up short in its pursuit of Alex Bregman.

Bichette had only played shortstop at the MLB level until a brief cameo at second base this past postseason. In his return from a September knee injury, Bichette appeared in five games at the keystone in the World Series. He played 30 games at second base in the minors. Bichette has never appeared at third base as a professional. His subpar arm strength wouldn’t be ideal at the position, but it could be a better spot for his declining range. Bichette ranked in the first percentile in Outs Above Average last season. At third base, he’d have the foul line as a bumper on one side, with the rangy Andres Gimenez supporting him on the other side.

The Dodgers have Mookie Betts locked in at shortstop, but second base is a short-term hole, and third base could be a long-term need. Deficiencies are relative when it comes to the back-to-back champs, of course. The second base mix currently includes KBO import Hyeseong Kim, prospect Alex Freeland, and the recently re-signed Miguel Rojas. Tommy Edman could also factor in when he’s not playing the outfield. Even if there isn’t a clear standout in the group, there are probably enough options for LA to adequately cover the position without a major addition like Bichette.

Once again, third base is a more interesting discussion. The Dodgers reupped with Max Muncy via a $10MM club option. He’s only signed through 2026, though. Muncy will turn 36 before the end of next season. Injuries have cost him significant time in each of the past two years. His tenure with the Dodgers is likely coming to an end at some point in the near future. If the club views Bichette as a viable fit at third base, he could spend a year at second base and then transition to the hot corner for the rest of what is likely to be a lengthy contract.

Hoerner had higher WAR than Bichette in 2025 something like 6.2 to 3.6. Cheaper and better to extend Hoerner.

        @Yankee

I truly feel that in today’s world we care more about what the media narratives are rather than the word actually said. Not obviously, GMs aren’t going to show their hands and things ate fluid but this is a quote from Cashman on Jazz:

“He’s somebody who I think is currently part of the solution, someone who has made us better by getting him two [Trade] Deadlines ago and giving us athleticism,” Cashman said of Chisholm. “He’s above average. He’s an All-Star second baseman; great defense, steals bags, power, all that stuff. He’s been a good get.”

The Yanks have notoriously preferred to let their falls with players run out and then resigningthem. They did it with Judge, Soto, Jeter, etc. It shouldn’t be a controversy that they take this posture with Jazz and everyone else. The couple of times when they DID extend a player that come to mind were with Severino and Hicks. While they were absolutely justified in doing so, it didn’t turn out to sell as we all know now. We need to relax.

        @mlb

that’s debatable. you have to look beyond just WAR. It also depends on the skill set teams need most. Yanks for example, could use a contract hitter who doesn’t strike out much, can play defense and has speed. Bichette however, has far more power and can be a middle of the order 100 rbi guy AND can get in front of Judge enough to be an excellent set up guy. You put Hoener on a team devoid of power bats and he’s not much of an impact player. he a nail without a hammer. Yanks have plenty of hammers. So you have to consider the match. Hoener has a higher WAR due to defense but Bichette is still passable with the glove.

I don’t think you have to worry about that too much. I’m pretty sure the Jays would match any offer that the Yankees made. It would be a PR nightmare if they let one of their homegrown stars leave for the Yankees. They might let him walk to sign Tucker if it’s somebody else signing him, but I just can’t see them not matching the offer if it comes from the Yankees.

From what I’ve read, it sounds like the plan was to let him see what he could get from other teams and then see if they wanted to match or or beat it. Obviously I’m not an Insider or anything, so I could be wrong, but that’s the impression I’ve gotten from everything I’ve read.

The suggestion that Bo could play 3B is (ahem) is in error. He struggles making throws at SS. His arm is weak and his mechanics inconsistent. Vlad has been saving him for years by having to corral all kinds of poor throws.

Anyone looking to sign him longterm might play him for a year or two more at SS, but his future is 2B for sure.

I’m not really prepared to comment on what the Cubs 2026 team looks like just yet. Hoyer has done exactly what he always does as far as the bullpen is concerned looking for lightning in a bottle. He may have actually found some in Maton and Harvey if they stay healthy to go with Palencia and Hodge. It might actually be better than 25. As far as a SP the goal would have been to find someone better than Taillion. There’s no FA left I consider better than that left. Imai was the last. Playing the long game might work out in his favor. I would have been way more receptive to trading Nico if they still had Cam Smith but trading him now just opens up the hole at 3B again with the only option then being spend big money for a FA 3B money pit there. If, And I think it’s a big if, Steele comes back from his 2nd TJ surgery as good as he was then it’s good. I don’t really understand why everybody is down on Wicks and Assad as they both have upside to me. If they can be parlayed into a guy like an Alcantara, Ryan, Cabrera then OK. As long as the guy is not LH cool, We have plenty. Right now we have a lot of maybe’s. As in MAYBE somebody steps up( Brown, Assad, Wicks) or MAYBE Steele makes it all the way back or MAYBE they trade for somebody nobody is talking about. There’s still a month to go. Trading Nico now makes no sense until you see what Ramirez, Rojas and Mathis are. They haven’t shown quite enough to show they belong yet. If they have to let Nico walk after this year so be it because you can’t offer him the QO because like Imanaga he would probably take it foiling your strategy. There’s still a month to go so I’m not gonna bash Hoyer just yet. If his strategy is to play the young guys and see what they have I’m all for it. It might pay off in the end who knows. I’m willing to wait and see. Now that Hoyer has his extension he may be more inclined to keep young talent rather than launch it but there are some guys in the system he needs to make decisions on soon, They aren’t getting any younger and need to be moved or counted on for the future. I’ll wait and see.

They are fearing a shutdown or abbreviated 2027 season. No team gets hit harder than the Cubs if games aren’t played. They don’t just have to worry about lost revenue from Wrigley Field and lost tv revenue – they have to worry about all their other businesses they own surrounding Wrigley that Ricketts bought up after buying the Cubs.

I agree. The cubs just want to keep us interested (and spending money.) They want to be just good enough to keep you checking on them, showing up to the games… I think the free agent trade rumors at this point are all about the same- keep us interested… stay in the mix…. But never actually do it. They’d sign Bichette for 3/60… but that’s about it.

The entire universe of baseball journalists is actually a tiny little incestuous group who have held these positions in the industry forever. And there are only so many storylines and rumors to chase down. You notice when an actual deal comes thru that four or so journalists get one tidbit of the story to break: Passan first to announce, then Heyman with the total dollar amount, Robert Murray gets the actual breakdown on the terms of the deal, and then perhaps Nightingale with the opt-outs. (As an example). It’s all rather farcical.

Note how often he has used the Mets’ interest this winter (they are not signing Tucker, Bellinger, Valdez, likely not Suarez; none fit what they are trying to do this winter which is to reposition (pun intended) financials)…note how little movement they have made toward Boras clients (Alonso included). Plus they off loaded Nimmo.

Dodgers really do not need him. They have several guys that can play 2B. Kim needs a longer look at second. Rojas can break him as needed. Depending on his ankle situation, Edman can play center or Pages. Hernandez is better in Left but in my opinion is not terrible in right, Kim or Rushing can play Left. Edman at 2B. Dodgers really have many options. Expect to see Mike back, as well.

Cubs are out of their minds if they move on from Hoerner.

Cub infield should remain Busch, Hoerner, Swanson, and Shaw. Shaw is fine defensively at 3rd. His bat will improve in year two. Sign a free agent starter, Gallen, Valdez, etc. Use prospects for another starter.

I think Bo is Plan B for the Jays after Tucker. Probably that way for a few teams. Once Tucker goes, Bo’s signing follows, Jays do want him, but only at 2b. Bo at 3b would be a disaster, no matter where he ends up.

I think Toronto is waiting to see what his offers are. If they are within reason and the range Toronto is willing to pay him) they’ll pay him a little more to stay.

It’s still a good fit for both sides.

If it comes down to it, I wouldn’t mind the Jays signing him to a 1 year higher AAV deal. If his market doesn’t work out to his liking this offseason it may be a way to improve his stock. Bring the defence up… Stay healthy for the season… Things like that.

What a joke. There is absolutely no way in hell the Cubs are interested in anything other than a short-term deal with Brehmab or Bichette. They are always mentioned because they’re sitting there in case the market falls off for any of these guys. Ricketts justbwon’t spend money, especially with a lockout looming.

Another joke is the rumor that they wanted a front line starting pitcher. They weren’t even in on Imai, and he only signed for 3 years. It’s a shame

David Sterns had BETTER be playing possum here. Bichette’s days on the left side of the infield are done, he’s EXACTLY what we need offensively, the same age as Soto and blocks none of our best prospects. WHAT the F am I missing here? We’re letting a guy who’s never played first have the job anyway; just let Bichette learn the position. There’s no way he’d be worse than Pete.

He’d be our #3 hitter for the next decade. Let Benge play CF, trade for a Wilyer Abreu type to finish the OF and get to work on our mess of a rotation.

The holdup is probably no one wanting to go crazy years on anyone. Probably the same for Tucker. The upcoming CBA and possible work stoppage probably is also a factor in not wanting to go long.

Salaries were driven out of sight by a handful of teams and if those half dozen or so don’t bite, the players have rough going in free agency.

The Yankees rushed Volpe to the majors—his bat needed more Triple-A time. But his top-5 glove earned him the right to develop at shortstop. I just hope Cashman doesn’t rush George Lombard the same way. Yankees fans demand homegrown talent, then panic when kids struggle. Our offense is strong enough to carry elite defenders while their bats develop. Even with defensive regression, a healthy Volpe should provide the defense he showed in 2023-2024, which is better than Bichette’s. Bichette has the right-handed bat we need but his defense is weaker. He could slide to second, but I prefer Jazz’s skill set, lefty bat, and plus glove—and he’ll be cheaper to keep. Unless Jazz moves to third as part of an extension, focus $150-200M on Bregman or Okamoto at third. Keep Dominguez even if they sign Bellinger or Tucker—he wasn’t overwhelmed as a rookie. Bernie, Cano, Gardner, and Melky all needed time. Volpe’s defense buys him that runway. Let him develop or stop pretending we’re building sustainability.

Agreed. But does it really matter now after Volpe’s three years in the big leagues? It’s only the fans/media that have panic. Cashman and, by extension, Boone have stuck with him. Lombard, Jr. will strike out at 45% if he broke camp.

Cashman’s statements recently seemed to throw cold water at the idea of him being ready in 2026. He stated his glove was ready now but that the bat wasn’t. He’s young at the level he’s at now. No need to rush him. 2026 wouldn’t be on my mind at all. Give him at least a full season at AAA.

If the Yankees are in on Bichette it’s hopefully a shorter term heavy laden player opt out contract with the idea that Jazz is being dealt in a 3 way deal to acquire Nico Hoerner to play SS so Bichette takes over at second. That’s a much better contact oriented lineup. Then let Jones and JD compete for LF. If Bellinger returns it’s for a 3-4 year deal at most. Use the young starters to compete for the 5th rotation spot and fill in the back of the bullpen with live arms. That’s a recipe for competing for AL East!

As a Jays fan, I love Bo. But any suggestion that he can man 3B is ridiculous. His defensive issues at SS are twofold: range and arm strength. 3B is not an option given his lack of arm strength at short. And lateral range matters at 3B, but so does sprint speed to come in on bunts. His sprint speed has dropped significantly the last few years. 2B is the only reasonable long term option.

I think with practice he can be a fundamentally sound 3B as the skills at short are transferable. He has good hands. That said if his arm is in fact toast it may not matter.

      • CameronG

It’s not that his arm is toast, it’s that it was never strong (or accurate) to begin with – it’s why anyone suggesting that he can play 3B hasn’t actually watched him play. He works hard at his defense, but he’s not capable of playing 3B at a league average level. Put him at 2B, let him play perfectly average defense, and let him do what he does at the plate.

His bat is still a wish in progress but he still posted 1.9 and 3.5 WAR seasons with near 50 extra base hits and 25 SB each of his first 2 seasons. You make it sound as if he’s been nothing his first 2 years.

So what does a 1.9 and 3.5 WARZ mean for his first 2 seasons? What does “golden boy” have to do with anything? He was ranked 5th overall on WAR. Why did that suddenly mean something for everyone else except a Yanks player? Is he perfect? Absolutely not. Does he need to improve offensively and rebound next year one healthy with the glove? Yes. But do invest $150 mil at that position plus 110% luxury tax seems like a bad investment that could be spent to address 3B or another SP. Bregman would be a better investment OR broach the idea to Jazz of moving to 3b full time with an extension.

Here’s a idea Jed Hoyer needs to follow

    1. Extend Nico Hoerner
    2. Sign Bo Bichette to play 3rd
    3. Make Steele and Brown learn a 3rd pitch.
    4. Get PCA a shock collar and zap him every time he swings outside the strike zone .
    5. Dansbry Swanson gets a collar too. Needs to learn to hit to RF. He is the highest paid player on that roster now hit like it. Not a 8 hitter. Unless hes willing to give money back …
    6. Extend Michael Busch while youre at it.
    7. Quit giving guys no trade clause that have never improved but only gotten worse since coming up. Yes im talking about Ian Happ. Dude may have a gold glove but fyi lf is the easiest position in MLB. His bat has go down every year since his rookie yr.
    8. Stop signing these has been like Neris, Preesly, Turner etc..just those 3 guys were close to $30 million wasted .
    9. QUIT BLOWING SMOKE UP OUR BUTTS ABOUT HOW HOW OUR SHARE HOLDERS ARE DIFFERENT THAN OTHERS. WE ARENT A SMALL MARKET TEAM. THATS RIGHT OR WRIGLEY CAN BE AS EMPTY AS THE WHITE SOX WHEN WE BOYCOTT

I agree with most of what you said:
      1. Not quite sure just yet. Love Nico But you have a guy in Ramirez who is a SH and can play 2B and 3B. Not as good a fielder but could be a better hitter and save money in the end. Maybe
      2. No, Not Uh Uh.
      3. Think if they could they would have by now.
      4. He’ll learn eventually. Experience is a great teacher.
      5. He’ll never be worth his salary as a hitter. Not why he was signed in the first place. He’s slightly overpaid but who isn’t in baseball?
      6. Not a bad idea.
      7. Absolutely SPOT ON! If you need an NTC to sign a guy walk away. FAST.
      8. Maybe now that he got his extension he uses more young players because he has more time to see what he’s got. I hope so.
      9. Just because you have money to spend doesn’t mean you have to spend it. The Cubs spend up to the Tax every year and until the new CBA is signed nobody knows what that’s going to look like. Ricketts has been pretty forthcoming and transparent about that. 250 million is enough to put a quality team on the field.

      So nice post.
