The Mets provided reporters with a few updates on players in camp this week, with Anthony DiComo of MLB.com among those to pass them along. Perhaps most notably, Brett Baty had a minor hamstring issue a few weeks ago and will be on a slower progression.
It doesn’t appear there’s any concern with Baty missing the start of the season. There’s still over a month until Opening Day, so there’s lots of time for Baty to get enough reps before the start of the schedule. Baty had a bit of a breakout in 2025, hitting 18 home runs and slashing .254/.313/.435 for a 111 wRC+. He also seemed to establish himself as a viable defender at both third and second base.
Coming into 2026, he doesn’t have a clear position. The Mets acquired Marcus Semien to cover second and signed Bo Bichette to play third. Baty could roam around the field, playing different spots, perhaps even getting into the outfield with the departure of Brandon Nimmo.
For the early part of the season, there’s already a potential change in plans. Shortstop Francisco Lindor recently required hamate surgery. The Mets are hoping he can be back for Opening Day but it’s also possible he lands on the injured list. In that scenario, perhaps Bichette would spend some time at his previous shortstop position, which would open playing time at third for Baty. The Mets could also keep Bichette at third to get reps and put Ronny Mauricio at short. That would leave Baty potentially battling for right field time with Carson Benge, MJ Melendez, Mike Tauchman and others.
DiComo adds that outfielder Luis Robert Jr., Francisco Alvarez and Jorge Polanco will also be slow-played a bit in camp, not playing in the earlier spring games. In Robert’s case, the club wants him to focus on strengthening his lower half. Robert can be a borderline MVP candidate when healthy but injuries have often led to absences and slumps. Many of his injuries have been related to his hips or hamstrings. He has six big league seasons but has only once played more than 110 games.
The past two seasons have seen Robert post subpar offensive numbers around his injuries. Despite that, the Mets took on his $20MM salary, a notable sum for a club paying a 110% tax on payroll additions. They also gave up Luisangel Acuña and Truman Pauley to get him from the White Sox. With that notable investments, the Mets naturally want Robert to be as healthy as possible for the upcoming campaign. His deal has a $20MM club option for 2027 with a $2MM buyout.
As for Polanco and Alvarez, both have notable injury histories. Polanco has been battling knee issues in recent years. He was limited to 118 games in 2024 and had one of the worst offensive seasons of his career. He was back on the field in 2025 and bounced back offensively but was mostly limited to the designated hitter spot through the first half.
The Mets believed in that bounceback enough to give him a two-year, $40MM deal. They will naturally want to monitor his knee health but also may need to strike a balance as Polanco is expected to move to first base, a new position for him, while bouncing to other spots. He and the Mets will want him to get a decent amount of reps during exhibition play, so they will have to weigh that against the desire for load management.
Alvarez has dealt with a left thumb sprain, left hamate fracture and right thumb sprain over the past two years. Those ailments have limited him to 176 games over the past two years. Keeping him healthy for Opening Day is sensible but, as the starting catcher, he will also need to get in work with all the club’s pitchers.

Seems like Vientos is the forgotten man. Depth piece? I would think he has some trade value too.
With no options left, Vientos has less value in trade than you might think. He doesn’t have a role and they can’t send him down w/o putting him on waivers.
He has a role; DH.
Vientos needs to show 2024 is closer to the norm than 2025. If he does, we’ll see Vientos play more games at 1B than any other Met. I’d prefer he fly under the radar and have a chip on his shoulder than the unreasonably high expectations he had coming into 2025. Baty had a decent 2025 while getting thrown around the diamond, with all the changes he’s also flying under the radar. Much better to keep them focused on their craft than have them be the focus of the media.
Vientos will be back up first baseman and third baseman and DH.
He’s the DH, no?
He’s not forgotten. The way this roster lines up, he will be the regular DH until/unless he fails to hit. His trade value is severely limited by him being a poor fielder, and one who still has not established what his bat will be on a consistent basis.
The way it seems to be lining up is Baty will be DH majority of the time with Benge in RF or that is what most projections seem to be right now. Vientos would be the short side of the platoon.
Personally i would prefer DH be rotational to keep players healthy. 1b a couple days with vientos there and polanco being more a DH and switching in Bichette to DH a time or two a week with Baty at 3b and rotate Baty into DH when both Polanco and Bichette in the field.
Which is why Baty is critical. He can give a rest day to Bichette, Semien, Polanco and even Soto.
@ roll Disagree. While Benge could make the OD starting lineup, his readiness to do so is more a longshot than, “the way it lines up right now”.
well projections at MLB.com SNY.com roster resource and Roto champ Rising Apple and pretty much every respectable sports site is showing that projection as to what they are “lining up to do.” Even Sterns saying Benge is given every opportunity leads to that as well.
Will things change before opening day probably especially with Lindor most likely out to start the season. Bichette could move to short with baty taking third. Maybe Melendez or Tauchman kills it in spring training and neither Benge or Baty make it to the OF. Maybe Vientos gets traded for the roster spot if they want another SS on the active roster so as to make Bichette only work on 3B. Lots to happen still.
Stearns never said, “every chance”, he said, “a chance”. He said it many weeks ago. And since saying it, he added Baty to the OF mix, signed Melendez, and then signed Tauchman.
How many of those projections that you read were made before the Tauchman signing? Because that changes the equation. We also have differing perceptions of respectable sports site. Rising Apple is fan bloggers. They know nothing more than you or I. They just have a logo, have been around a while, and had the fortune to be bought out by a large media company at a time when all of these companies were clamoring to add any internet content they could scoop up. Never heard of Roster Champ. And Danny Abriano of SNY is a writer, not a baseball guy, who gets baseball things wrong all the time.
he said it a little over a week ago not weeks. The projections on fan graphs / roster resource have it already and Benge is leading both Melendez and Tauchman and most of the projections Even MLB.com as of 4 hours ago has Baty as the DH. The ones i listed previous were after Melendez signed but just before Tauchman, Seems most refresh once a week unless there is a big signing and Tauchman isnt.
like i said THINGS CHANGE Polanco could be stone glove and cant catch a beach ball at first and has to be the DH for his bat, Vientos could find his 2024 stroke again and be the leading 1B. Lindor could have surgery on his hand and miss opening day. Baty could blow out a hammy and be out for the next couple months. Tauchman could show his ability. Trout could say i want out and i want to go play for only the Mets. The Mets could take a shot at Buxton for the OF in a trade. Soto could decide he wants to play SS exclusively. Anything can change between now and the beginning of the season but i am telling you the projections that are the latest and greatest and seem pretty much all consistent and Baty being the DH if Lindor is still considered opening day SS.
I thought Soto is moving to LF? Do you mean RF for this?
Yea terrible opinion piece talking about baty in left after the player coach and gm all came out and said soto will play left.
lol it’s a simple mistake, relax
Its not simple
It’s*
Your name is spelled wrong. I would not try to correct anyone moving forward, quarterwit
Soto is moving to left, was just coming to say the same thing
It’s been updated now.
I hope Alvarez breaks out this season, has about as much talent as anyone at the catching postion. A lot of people forget that he was the number 1 prospect in baseball a few years back.
The way he bounces around back there was just driving me crazy during the post season. Totally irrational anger.
Him and the Jays catcher have short little arms. Both very good, probably perfect catcher bodies, just funny.
Yeah we all know where #1 picks winnd up.
Well sometimes they wind up great, like Bryce, Cole, and Skenes.
Prospect*
I wouldn’t bounce Polanco to 3rd. He could barely throw across the diamond for the Ms when tried there last year. An adventure to say the least. I do wish him well. He had a great year that helped us down the stretch and into the playoffs.
As far as as has been reported, Bichette has not worked at SS at all for the Mets. All his practice has been at 3B. If they get closer to opening day and if Lindor is not looking like he will be ready, I am sure they will want Bichette to at least get some practice there before the season starts.
The Mets didn’t give Robert the contract, the White Sox signed him to the deal and the last year is an option year.
Baty might be a tough trade–la variation of the Robert problem–which is how do you value someone who might have a high floor–but just as easily could be ordinary.
3 way trade
Astros get Joey Bart and Thomas Harrington
Pirates get Bret Baty and Zach Thornton
Mets get Bennett Sousa and Alimber Santa
Why would the Mets sign up for a couple relievers who aren’t very good?
Maybe add Braxton Ashcraft and it might be doable for Baty and Thornton.
We’re getting hit with bad Joey Bart trade proposals night and day around here now.
Pirates are done trading from pitching depth. Harrington is projected to be in the backend of the rotation with Chandler and Ashcraft as 3 and 4 starters. Barco will see time in Indy. Carmen Mold is the other option to start, but I don’t feel comfortable with that idea. Jose Urquidy will be battling for a spot in the rotation as well. So if Harrington or Chandler struggling or show signs of more work on their game during Spring training, Urquidy has MLB experience and can pitch to start the season. Jones is out until potentially June and that depends on how he reacts to throwing a ball off the mound again. It could be sooner than June when Jones returns to Pittsburgh, but I think the management is going to work Jones at a slower pace of recovery. So June seems as ideal time for his return.
So trading Harrington doesn’t make sense for the Pirates at this moment. Maybe Dennis Santana and 2 prospects in the 11-20 ranked in the system. Maybe add in Yorke or Gonzales to get Baty. Starting pitching from MLB or MiLB for Baty, doesn’t work for the Pirates.
This sounds like a potential disaster. Lindor starting the season on IL, oft-injured players like Alvarez, Polanco, Robert, and aging Semien. Not to mention Bichette not being able to play 3rd or Polanco ever having played first. Seems like they’re gonna miss Alonso/Nimmo within 2 weeks of the season.
Do those guys play SS or 3B?
Well I mean if Nimmo wasn’t traded for absolutely no reason then Bichette would be playing at second, his actual only decent position.
Bichette was a signing of opportunity. Just timing. No way they thought they would get him on a super short term deal early in the off-season.
Bichette was Plan B after missing out on Tucker. His signing wasn’t exactly happenstance. The Mets had him on their radar since the season ended. Just like the Yankees signing Max Fried after losing out on Soto.
Sounds like a troll.
Just a prank
They should have started regretting that second each move was made. This is why Stearns is a god awful big market PBO. he can’t properly identify talent and only wants to get bad/old/injury prone players to flip at the deadline lol. The Mets are screwed as long as he’s in charge.
How about we wait for the season to unfold.
Personally, I am looking forward to not seeing terrible situational hitting and constant mental and defensive errors from previous years.
Lindor-Semien-Robert is elite. Bichette will be fine at third. Polanco will not be worse than Pete at first once the season starts. If not, Baty is right there at the ready at either position.
What on earth makes you think Bichette will be fine at third? lmfao. Like there is literally no indication he can remotely even be a passable 3rd baseman, This is what the Mets season is already based on, pure hope. And Polanco is old and oft injured, yet is some how gonna be just fine at a position he has never played? Pure hope. Mets just want to be optimistic but when they start the season with Lindor on the IL, Semien, Taylor, and Robert batting .045, Polanco and BIchette not being able to play their positions, things will begin to absolutely go south in typical lol mets fashion. Have you ever seen any Gm in any offseason make these kind of moves where they made so many non sensical, confounding moves??
You seem very angry. Kai Correa is considered a genius at coaching infield defense. I’m going to wait until the season to see how it unfolds.
Jdawg
You seem to be putting a lot of faith in a couple one year wonders who’s career numbers are more bench player levels then actual starters. You also seem to be placing the blame for the bad season solely on the offense (which was a top 5-7 offense in all of baseball last season) which is silly. The offense was elite last year it was 100000% in the pitching staff and stearns for not addressing any of the actual weaknesses during any of his trade deadlines.
In what world are LRJ and semien elite? lol. They have both been wildly unproductive with the bat for at best 2 years (more like 6 out of 7 years for LRJ who’s had an ops of under .660 in the last 2 seasons, has hit more than 14 homers once in his career and has terrible bat to ball skills) and if you’re talking defensively Taylor is a better defender with better arm strength and comparable foot speed. (I think LEJ is AA little faster but Taylor takes great routes which makes up for it)
Polonco already was a worse defender than pete as he was one of the worst defensive players in all of baseball last season at second. Not to mention Pete was one of the best “pickers” (digging the ball out of the dirt on bad throws) in the game which while not a flashy or sexy stat will 10000% show up this year with an already bad defender playing at a position he’s never played before. Excuse. Has one pitch of experience playing.
No has been on the decline as a defensive player for years and isn’t a third baseman or a short stop at this point and would really only be good at second.
Moving Baty to every position is going to kill that kids career with the lack of stability and every day ABs he’s earned with his more than solid defense and second half numbers.
It’s a prank
Could not agree more. I’ve been screaming this at anyone who will listen since the trade deadline two years ago. Stearns horrible as a big market GM/PBO and doesn’t know what he’s doing. He will be the 5th different GM/PBO that cohen has fired since 2020 before the start of the 26-27 season because cohen doesn’t know how to hire a front office. He just wants yea man because he’s an egotistical asshat. You don’t believe me check his interview from earlier this week where he kept saying “I missed the playoffs” and “I want to be in the playoffs” not once did he say anything about the team.
Stearns is lucky he has a good relationship with the Brewers who gifted him an ace pitcher. Otherwise, this would be the worst offseason in mlb history. Right now Mets fans are being optimistic but once reality sets in and the stupidity of all these moves are shown he’ll definitely be outta here. Brodie was better than this.
Pete was not any better at picking than 15 other first baseman I can name off the top of my head. You just saw him more.
And half the fan base was clamoring for trading Baty, Williams, Benge and Tong for Skubal.
And I will just say the anger being spewed toward Stearns is attributable simply to the loss of Alonso, Nimmo, McNeil and Diaz. And so he becomes a little egotistical fish in a big bowl who is not smart enough for a NY market.
And who are the one year wonders? Polanco? Bichette? They’re league average players? Robert, that could be said for him, but everyone else in camp has been a proven performer…either offensively or defensively.
I just prefer to start each season with optimism. And honestly, I’m looking forward to a season of new faces. We can have this conversation again in July.
Alonso is one of the best pickers in baseball if you don’t know that you don’t know ball.
You speak as if you know more than me. So I must accede and say you are right. You must know ball and I do not.
Have a great season!
yes, of course, you too.
Jdawg
Polonco is not an average player. The guy is a walking injury with no speed, no defense, doesn’t draw a lot of walks, doesn’t hit for a good average and doesn’t have good power considering since 2016 he’s hit 20 or more homer homers just 3 times and 30 or more doubles 4 times.
Bo is a great batting average guy. But he has very little homer potential and that was while he was playing in a division with 2 domes and the 3 smallest parks in all of baseball, he doesn’t draw many walks so his OBP/OPS is 97% dependent on his average. He’s also a poor defender and has been for more than just last season.
The hatred for Stearns has more to do with him just failing. He failed to keep Pete who was/is a better player than anyone they brought in this season. They failed the offense the last 2 seasons by not actually addressing the god awful bull pen and rotation, he failed the fans by lying about “run prevention” being a focus just to get rid of guys people paid money to see.
Pete is a good hitter for power and last year, looked like he was ready to turn the corner on pitch selection. He is a terrible fielder.
He also refused to DH when approached by Mendoza and Stearns last year, mid season.
I liked Pete, but he wasn’t as team oriented as everyone seems to think. Especially last year. There is a reason there was no offer.
Glad he got his money and I wish him nothing but the best, but it was a divorce that was good for both parties.
Jdawg
Pete Alonso (New York Mets): Known for elite “scoop” volume and efficiency. Based on data from 2023–2025, Alonso led all MLB first basemen in total scoops. As of early 2025, he was credited with one of the highest scoop percentages in the league (roughly 93% success rate on difficult digs).
So no. You can’t name 15 guys off the top of your head that was better than Pete at scooping. I misspoke and called it picking.
As far as him not wanting to DH who cares? Fans (not just you) seem to completely disregard the fact that consistency is one of the most important aspects of building upon improvements. Look at McNeil. When he was locked in at second for an entire season and not bouncing around between second and outfield he was a batting champ. Then because of bad team construction/injuries/whatever he was forced to move to a different spots in the line up and on the field and he fell off hard.
As far as being team oriented that seems like some revisionist history and straight up stearns/cohen propaganda to justify not even offering the best home grown guy since David wright a contract. The guy bleed blue and orange and left everything he had on the field in every game of the season dude does not miss games or take pitches off. He had every right to be furious at Stearns and cohen for not giving him a long term deal when he gave everything he had to that organization.
Stearns made his bed and when he gets caned after next seasons inevitable 81-81 record where Bo, LRJ and polonco miss 40-60 games each i will be right here to say I told you so.
You do you.
Sounds like you believe the propaganda you were fed about Pete bleeding orange and blue, rather than green.
…what I said isn’t in the media. And it hasn’t been because Stearns and Cohen have more class than those who left, and Boras who used the media to change the perception of the dynamics.
I’m going to root for the current Mets to succeed. (And former Mets I liked, but had to move on). You are rooting for them to fail.
Oh, and by the way, Cohen personally offered Alonso a 7 year, no deferral deal, $158m that Alonso turned down because he believed he should be paid more than Freddie Freeman, and told Cohen he was going to enter free agency. That’s fact. Not propaganda.
Let’s keep each other on ignore from this point onward, okay?
Exactly, at least if the kept Nimmo BIchette could play second, Its going to be hilarious when they realize they signed a 3b who plays the position worse than Mark Vientos.
Hey babe wake up, a new Mets trolls just dropped
Crazy that Jorge Polanco got 2.5 times more guaranteed money than Eugenio Suarez.
Signed earlier! Totally nuts though.
They’re going to be regretting this contract when he reverts back to being his frequently injured self. Teams never learn when it comes to players being good and healthy in their walk years.
Papi
It’s really not that crazy considering David Stearns is a god awful PBO lol.
Polanco getting more than Suarez shows what teams are valuing more now. Seems to be they’re leaning more towards contact and on base ability over power. Keep the line moving type players.
Saw a photo of Luis Robert walking into the Mets training facility, he looked jacked. He looks like he put on some weight.
One of the most interesting stories of the ’26 season. Acuna in Chicago and Robert in New York.
Extra interesting too, since Acuña became a switch hitter on the flight to Chicago!
Extra interesting since Acuna has no options, and Robert has an option that may not be picked up
I sometimes think him being jacked in Chicago was part of his Injury problem. As he showed …when healthy he’s a force. I hope he bangs with Mets
Brett Baty would look great in Pirates uniform. I know…. I know….. But a brothah can dream big!
He looks good in a Mets uniform too. He needs to stay as a hedge for Bichette opting out, injuries to Semien or Bichette (or Polanco).
Having hedge being another Zack Short, Joey Wendle, Eddy Alvarez, etc… is not a smart way to set the roster.
Vientos on the other hand, if someone offers enough…?
doesnt have to be a dream because Skenes would also look great in a Mets uniform. Baty for Skenes straight up and both will look great. They can even do a catwalk at the airport at the exchange. 🙂 <3
That isn’t fair, Skenes is a once in a lifetime stud of a pitcher. Baty is not close to Skenes stardom. Maybe Keller straight up for Baty.
No thank you. Keller is an innings eater for sure, but really isn’t needed. And is pricey for what he offers.
Fine final offer, Jack Suwinski straight up for Baty
As a ChiSox fan, I’d love to see Luis Robert, Jr winning the MVP. He didn’t burn any bridges with me bc I know of hundreds if not thousands of baseball players had efforts and careers cut short by injures. Im definitely pulling for him with the Mets. GO La Pantera!!!
I just don’t Benge as the starting RF on opening day. That’s extremely optimistic.I think Baty actually starts in RF to open the season. I think its more likely Benge gets called up mid-season.
C- Alvarez
1B- Polanco
2B- Semien
3B- Bichette
SS- Lindor
LF- Soto
CF- Robert
RF- Baty
DH- Vientos/Mauricio
Mauricio has an .800 OPS vs RHP last season. He’s definitely going to get some ABs vs righties.
With Vientos at DH that’s 5 RH batters in the lineup.
Agree on Benge. I would prefer to see him get another 200 ABs in AAA and actually hit at that level.
Mauricio’s OPS against RH was .783 in what is still a statistically small sample size. But since you went there, his overall OPS faded badly over the second half, and was only .656 as a starter. Most importantly, he is one of the few players who still has an option remaining on a now-crowded roster.
I actually want Benge to make the team and he can learn at the bottom of the lineup. His hit tool will catch up to his eye tool pretty quickly.
That said, Benge doesn’t make it and Tauchman does makes a lot of sense as well.
Thus, the importance of having flexible position bats (Bruján doesn’t have the bat part of that).
Baty, Vientos, Polanco, Tauchman and Taylor having some rotation in RF, 1b and DH is likely what’s going to shake out.
And hopefully Bruján is short term place holding for someone a bit more multidimensional (can hit).
Baty will be the primary DH, Vientos the short side. If Benge doesn’t win the RF job in ST Tauchman could be the primary there if he looks good in ST. Mauricio will be in Syracuse as he has an option left unless Lindor is not ready for the start of the season. And for all the trade proposals, Baty isn’t going anywhere, they like him. If anyone is being traded it’s Vientos.
Definitely a more reasonable guess. I would prefer Tauchman to Melendez if Benge is passed over after all of the hype.
My guess is Baty rotates around to give folks a breather at DH.
Unfortunately the Mets do what the Mets do and keep Brujan. Mauricio is a better fit overall.
If I were guessing
Lindor
Soto
Bichette
Polanco
Semien
Tauchman
Alvarez
Baty
Robert
Torrens, Brujan, Taylor, Vientos (if traded, Melendez gets the call likely)
Who else is noting the absurdity of playing Polanco at 1B and Baty at DH, and not vice-versa?
