The Pirates have emerged as a surprise entrant in the Framber Valdez market, reports Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, who calls the Bucs “one of the most aggressive clubs” in their pursuit of the star left-hander. Valdez rejected a qualifying offer from the Astros at the start of the offseason and would cost the Pirates their third-highest selection in the 2026 draft if a deal were to come together.
It’s an unexpected development that seems illogical at first blush, given the team’s already enviable stock of starting pitching and need to bolster the lineup. But adding Valdez to the mix could make sense, as it’d allow Pittsburgh to further dip into its supply of up-and-coming rotation arms and leverage that depth to acquire another bat.
Trade targets have thinned out as the offseason has worn on, but the Pirates could always try to engage with the D-backs on Ketel Marte, the Red Sox on Jarren Duran (or Wilyer Abreu), or the Nationals on CJ Abrams, speculatively speaking. There are surely some other names who’d be available if the Pirates, depending on which young arms the Pirates were to make available. Paul Skenes, of course, is wholly off limits. General manager Ben Cherington plainly said as much just days into the offseason. But even beyond Skenes, the Pirates have Mitch Keller, Braxton Ashcraft and Bubba Chandler ticketed for big league innings. Jared Jones will be back from UCL surgery this season. Young arms like Hunter Barco, Thomas Harrington and Wilber Dotel are on the 40-man roster and close to MLB-ready. Pittsburgh selected high school righty Seth Hernandez with the No. 6 overall pick in last summer’s draft. It’s a deep collection of starters.
Pairing Valdez with Skenes would give the Pirates one of the best one-two punches in the entire game. The 32-year-old lefty has been an iron man in Houston’s rotation in recent years. He’s pitched 767 2/3 innings of 3.21 ERA ball with a 23.9% strikeout rate, 7.9% walk rate and gargantuan 60% ground-ball rate across the past four seasons. Among qualified starters, only Logan Webb has pitched more innings in that time. Andre Pallante, Clay Holmes and Jose Soriano are the only starters with better ground-ball rates in that same span, and Valdez’s ERA is tied with Seattle’s Bryan Woo for 18th.
Signing Valdez would very likely require the Pirates to put forth the largest contract in franchise history, but they’ve shown a willingness to do that already this winter, reportedly offering Kyle Schwarber $120-125MM over a four-year term. Valdez has been seeking a long-term deal, but the manner in which he’s lingered on the market is a good reminder of the paucity of such contracts for pitchers aged 32 and up. As can be seen in MLBTR’s Contract Tracker, there are only three instances of a free agent pitcher 32 or older commanding a five-year deal over the past 15 offseasons: Blake Snell, Jacob deGrom and Zack Greinke. All were former Cy Young winners with even stronger cases than Valdez currently has.
The Pirates currently project for a $95MM payroll in the upcoming season, per RosterResource. That, somewhat remarkably, is only a few million shy of their franchise-record. However, the pursuit of Valdez and unsuccessful bids for Schwarber and slugger Eugenio Suárez demonstrate a clear willingness to push the budget to previously unseen levels.
There’s been speculation about Valdez acquiescing to a shorter-term deal with opt-outs, as we’ve seen from various high-end free agents both this winter and in recent offseasons. It’s not yet clear whether he’s amenable to such a structure, nor is it clear whether Pittsburgh is considering that type of offer or a more conventional multi-year deal to lock Valdez into place for the foreseeable future. The Orioles have been the team most prominently linked to Valdez throughout the winter, but the Blue Jays are still in the mix and he’s been at least loosely connected to the Braves, Giants, Mets and Red Sox in recent weeks.

Can he hit?
How much will the Pirates need to hit that collection of arms?
You don’t always win games scoring just one run no matter how good your pitching staff is
If he’s upset, he’ll definitely hit the catcher. “Unintentionally” of course
I hope he signs with the Rockies. 1 Year/$3 Million.
You understand that they want Valdez so they can TRADE pitching for another bat..right?
Keller won’t bring them back a good bat and they won’t come off jones or skenes
Crazy if the Bucs can land him. Would never have guessed they were in on him.
They are going after guys fitting of Pirates reputation.
Bob’s Nutting.
Dang that would be awesome. Then get either Mayo or Paredes via trade.
Yes.
I didn’t realize you liked Mayo. lol
Somebody else the Pirates are in on and won’t land. Smoke and mirrors to fend off a MLBPA grievance.
I don’t know that Ken Rosenthal has much to gain by calling them “one of the most aggressive suitors.” They very well may lose but I am not thinking this is grievance related since there are four other teams with lower payrolls than them.
Also, saying you’re “trying” won’t prevent a grievance if they’re not actually signing anyone.
MLB Players association has never won a grievance against a team for not spending up to cba regulations. I dont think they are worried.
Pirates are in zero jeopardy of losing revenue sharing. Getting that revenue sharing is # 1 through 10 on Pirates top 10 things to do. They don’t care of one is filled. Been there done that and what are they worried media is going to say they are cheap?
Why are they spending $ then? Well go back to goals 1 through 10. Why are they spending $ on players instead of increasing their real-estate value? They have a million potential seats to fill. The pressure from fans media politicians to not sit back and do nothing while having Skenes and a new TV deal to negotiate.
Bob don’t care about filling seats. As long as the Dodgers and other rich teams fill their stadiums then Bob will get paid.
Come on now. If he didn’t care about attendance there would be no fireworks bobble heads etc etc etc. Why advertise ticket plans. He cares greatly about attendance. Not caring about people giving you their $ sounds like a terrible business plan lol
Bob developed properly around PNC Park with the intention of drawing fans to the stands and those same fans pay for the restaurants and other activities before or after the game
He’s not going to make money with empty seats
To fend off a potential MLBPA grieviance, the Pirates would actually *have to* sign him.
Agreed
Crazy this guy is one of the best workhorse pitchers there is. I think hes in the top 5 pitchers category. I think that issue with the catcher last year may have a part in this delay.
The top 5 pitchers category?
Huge part.
Yes, it’s definitely a cultural/moral consideration that pretty much sank Trevor Bauer’s career, though there is a huge difference in severity. The question becomes, “If he was willing to compromise that situation, what else is he willing to compromise?”
No idea but the pirates pitching coach knows so not worried. Hopefully he is truly awful person because it’s the only way the Pirates can get him.
100% the catcher situation from last year caused this delay. Bet it cost him about 20mil in FA too.
Do you guys make it thru the day without walking into open manholes?
Offer him 30 a year for 2 years with a op out, see if he bites
That offer will be outbid.
Yet there still is not any talk about any such offers being made and only a week for pitchers to report.
Valdez was hoping for a five year deal. I think he’ll eventually take three or four years, with opt outs.
First reaction is Valdez interest is his Agent is putting that out there to drive up other offers. However, I then remembered his former Pitching coach is now in Pittsburgh.
Maybe there’s a chance?
Well you wouldn’t use the Pirates to drive prices up. 3 years 39m or whatever is their largest free agent offer ever. No one is going to be shaking in fear.
It’s actually awful pr. His market is so bad the Pirates can afford him and he’s so cheap they are willing to give up a 2nd round pick.
Saves money on that second round bonus slot too!
True but they would much rather spend $ on minimum wage until 6 years service time vs bidding wars on free market free agents. They have to spend a certain amount and that’s one of their preferred ways to do so.
Thar we go!
“We tried.”
At least PIT is in the “we tried” posturing stance that CLE used to be in years ago. Now they don’t even try.
The Pittsburgh Pirates get involved!
I’m rooting for the Bucs to pull this off. Not a Pirate fan but they deserve a chance to seize Skenes window of contention and go for it!
If they can trade Mitch Killer’s reasonable 15 million dollar contract along with some prospects for a bat or two and apply the Keller savings to the Framber outlay, you might have a plan.
After careful consideration Framber Valdez turned down the Pirates offer of 6 years/$25 million.
To be fair, 20MM of that was deferred to 2049
Sign him, then make the trade. Bubba Chandler for Marte. Bucs would be favorites for the playoffs.
wiring
Bubba Chandlers and what other 3 top pitchers from the Pirates for Marte?
Imagine adding Valdez and Marte to the Bucs! Would they be a serious post season contender then?
marte has a no trade clause in his contract and Pittsburgh is among those teams
That doesn’t automically mean he will turn down a trade to the Pirates. Usually, players use their NTC as leverage and include teams that they think could end up trying to acquire them via trade, so they have a say in where they end up going.
Argh matey, a pirate life for thee!
Beginning to look like the Dodgers again, isn’t it? :D
Bucs sign Valdez.
Bucs trade Keller for Parades.
This caps a perfect off-season for me.
Paredes is pretty perfectly built to not hit well in PNC. His 20 dingers from last year would have been 11 with PNCs dimensions.
Yet he still gets on base at a good clip, much better than Suarez and Triolo and IKF
You’re not wrong. I think you’d see more doubles and less HRs his spray chart would subtract a good deal of those HRs, however he will play 81 games in other parks.
The Bucs could limit Paredes’ use in home games and get Triolo some time in those games.
I would take what Paredes can offer over Triolo starting at 3B right now. Moving Keller for a different 3B piece could also be just as enticing.
Ideally, getting Brett Baty would be an even better move, but more than Keller would of course need to go along to secure that deal but that would be worth it if the minor league part of that is someone like Termarr Johnson.
I’ll admit, my first thought was there’s no way Bob would approve the payroll add. But couple it with moving Keller and it gives you a lefty and doesn’t increase payroll that much. Still doubtful, but not impossible.
If the Pirates sign him it’s gonna be like Lloyd Christmas finding out for the first time that we landed on the moon. Which also btw was completely ad libbed in Dumb and Dumber
Lack of remaining impact bats in FA, but still overpay a little in prospect capital to add a real hitter with limited financial resources (not another pitcher) while Skenes around.
Most prospects aren’t all that and lowball trade offers are a yawn if trading scared….yes-the seller is supposed to get someone likely to become good for a hitter you know “is” for next 2-3 years or so.
After “failing” to sign Josh Naylor, Kyle Schwarber, Eugenio Suarez, maybe Pittsburgh should change their team name to “Bridesmaids”.
Why, is Cheapasses already taken?
He will end up with the Dodgers…
The Yankees have Jasson Dominguez without a clear place on the roster and a desire for pitching.
Rather send Santana and a minor league starter to Yankees for “The martian” Jasson Dominguez
The Pirates claimed Santana off waivers from the Yankees. I doubt they’d want to spend Dominguez to get him back.
I don’t know necessarily if they have a desire for SP, and to me Jasson is fine as the 4th OF that gets in there 3-4 times a week again, but I’d entertain the idea of some sort of combo of Jasson and a prospect or 2 for Keller and Santana.
they want a lefty who can eat innings
Where have they said that?
On their website
Please sign him, I don’t want him as a Blue Jay.
Not going to happen.
Such bullongnadung, Pirates are not even serious, if so prove it by signing him
I agree, but the Bucs had the best offer for Suarez and was still turned down.
I’m sure these reporters would love nothing more than to report pirates offers are fake.
Is it more likely that the Pirates are serious, or that Bob Nutting is in the Epstein files and an angry fan has his number so he is actually trying?
Pay for pleasure nah Nutting doesn’t pay for anything except bare minimum to keep getting mlb revenue.
Pirates need a hitter not a pitcher lol
Wins are wins. Doesn’t matter where they come from.
If Pirates get Framber, that’s going to be a really good rotation. Framber would do well in a pitcher friendly park for home games.
Here come the big dogs! Good for the Bucs.
Mehhhh, everyone knew the Bucs weren’t going to get Schwarber, but they needed to look like they were seriously in on him.
Nothing to see here.
One thing you need to report is that Dana Brown has expressed interest in Valdez.
This would be a good addition for a couple of reasons.
First: Valdez is a very good SP.
Second: The Pirates don’t have a LH SP. LH hitters do better at PNC because it has a shorter RF wall. Having a LH SP would negate an opposing team’s advantage of loading their lineup with LH hitters.
A+ bidding
Cherington must think he has a good handle on what he’ll sign for and is confident he can offer the same amount without it being accepted.
I wish the Tigers would make an attempt for Valdez, especially if they’re absolutely not going to make Skubal a decent extension offer.
Absolutely! With Skubal, MIze, and Flaherty in the last year of their contracts, the Tigers need someone reliable to pitch in 2027 and beyond. Troy Melton might be that guy, but who knows? Jackson Jobe? Hopefully. Reese Olson? Can’t be relied on for a whole season. Make Framber an offer!
I hope they get him and ozuna, nl central will be fun this year!
Until someone makes a offer he has nothing
What if PIT signs him 4/$140m with opt outs, and then trades him for prospects at the deadline? They end up spending $25m for part of a season and then get 2-4 prospects in return. It seems like a win/win situation.
They’ll only get an outstanding prospect package if the team trading for him doesn’t realize he has opt outs!
If the Pirates beat the Orioles out that would be hilarious.
Why not? Get a top of the rotation arm at a discount. Would have to be an opt out but would be a great way to have this team make the playoffs then next season the young kids can really be developed and let it rip.
