The Pirates have emerged as a surprise entrant in the Framber Valdez market, reports Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, who calls the Bucs “one of the most aggressive clubs” in their pursuit of the star left-hander. Valdez rejected a qualifying offer from the Astros at the start of the offseason and would cost the Pirates their third-highest selection in the 2026 draft if a deal were to come together.
It’s an unexpected development that seems illogical at first blush, given the team’s already enviable stock of starting pitching and need to bolster the lineup. But adding Valdez to the mix could make sense, as it’d allow Pittsburgh to further dip into its supply of up-and-coming rotation arms and leverage that depth to acquire another bat.
Trade targets have thinned out as the offseason has worn on, but the Pirates could always try to engage with the D-backs on Ketel Marte, the Red Sox on Jarren Duran (or Wilyer Abreu), or the Nationals on CJ Abrams, speculatively speaking. There are surely some other names who’d be available if the Pirates, depending on which young arms the Pirates were to make available. Paul Skenes, of course, is wholly off limits. General manager Ben Cherington plainly said as much just days into the offseason. But even beyond Skenes, the Pirates have Mitch Keller, Braxton Ashcraft and Bubba Chandler ticketed for big league innings. Jared Jones will be back from UCL surgery this season. Young arms like Hunter Barco, Thomas Harrington and Wilber Dotel are on the 40-man roster and close to MLB-ready. Pittsburgh selected high school righty Seth Hernandez with the No. 6 overall pick in last summer’s draft. It’s a deep collection of starters.
Pairing Valdez with Skenes would give the Pirates one of the best one-two punches in the entire game. The 32-year-old lefty has been an iron man in Houston’s rotation in recent years. He’s pitched 767 2/3 innings of 3.21 ERA ball with a 23.9% strikeout rate, 7.9% walk rate and gargantuan 60% ground-ball rate across the past four seasons. Among qualified starters, only Logan Webb has pitched more innings in that time. Andre Pallante, Clay Holmes and Jose Soriano are the only starters with better ground-ball rates in that same span, and Valdez’s ERA is tied with Seattle’s Bryan Woo for 18th.
Signing Valdez would very likely require the Pirates to put forth the largest contract in franchise history, but they’ve shown a willingness to do that already this winter, reportedly offering Kyle Schwarber $120-125MM over a four-year term. Valdez has been seeking a long-term deal, but the manner in which he’s lingered on the market is a good reminder of the paucity of such contracts for pitchers aged 32 and up. As can be seen in MLBTR’s Contract Tracker, there are only three instances of a free agent pitcher 32 or older commanding a five-year deal over the past 15 offseasons: Blake Snell, Jacob deGrom and Zack Greinke. All were former Cy Young winners with even stronger cases than Valdez currently has.
The Pirates currently project for a $95MM payroll in the upcoming season, per RosterResource. That, somewhat remarkably, is only a few million shy of their franchise-record. However, the pursuit of Valdez and unsuccessful bids for Schwarber and slugger Eugenio Suárez demonstrate a clear willingness to push the budget to previously unseen levels.
There’s been speculation about Valdez acquiescing to a shorter-term deal with opt-outs, as we’ve seen from various high-end free agents both this winter and in recent offseasons. It’s not yet clear whether he’s amenable to such a structure, nor is it clear whether Pittsburgh is considering that type of offer or a more conventional multi-year deal to lock Valdez into place for the foreseeable future. The Orioles have been the team most prominently linked to Valdez throughout the winter, but the Blue Jays are still in the mix and he’s been at least loosely connected to the Braves, Giants, Mets and Red Sox in recent weeks.

Can he hit?
How much will the Pirates need to hit that collection of arms?
You don’t always win games scoring just one run no matter how good your pitching staff is
Correct. See Paul Skenes 2025.
Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale say hello.
I dont think the pirates are considering him. It’s been reported that he turned down 30 million for 2 years from the Astros. They dont need an arm. They need a 3rd baseman. They can’t have light hitting triolo playing there.
I think the news was put out by his agents.
They have done a good job getting bats in the off-season. Cherrington dont screw it up
2/60 from the Astros?
Cherington could still sign Valdez and get another bat. Ozuna is still out there and Pirates could look to the trade market too. There is still room to improve the all around part of the club instead of a certain area. I still wouldn’t object to IKF resigning with the Pirates to add another body to play 3B,SS, and 2B. Injuries happen and with Ohearn and Lowe, a IKF would be useful to keep the ship afloat until their return.
The Rangers will give Josh Jung for Jared Jones!?!??!!
@davisrocholl Umm, no. Not for Jared Jones at least. He is a top of the rotation on some teams and solid 2 or 3 on other clubs with an Ace. Jung is a below average defender with moderate power. His .979 fielding percentage and 14-23 HRs per season with .255 BA/.298 OBP/.724 OPS career average with 3 years removed from his all star season. Sorry if I am not all “glee” and “yeehaw” about Jung in the manner you are. I could see Ashcraft or Thomas Harrington, but it would be a hard pill to swallow if it is Jones and Jung straight up swap.
What if they sign Valdez and trade Keller though? They can then either trade for a 3B or sign Miguel Andujar and be pretty much done and fielding a pretty competitive team.
IKF was very consistent fielding, but really not productive compared to even his own previous seasons. One HR?? Really. He just signed with Boston as a utility player today. Both he and Triolo are utility players. If they are starting for you, you are most probably a losing team.
They errored greatly in their handling of Andujar. How not to treat a guy trying to re-find his game.
Doubt he’d want to come back here
@harbinger58 I see, you see the glass half full but not the fullest glass. IKF makes an ideal guy off the bench. Triolo could go down with an injury and then who do you fall back on 3B? Also, who would you use to cover SS when Gonzales isn’t on the field? Should Lowe get hurt (history shows he has the potential to land on the IR), who play second base? If Triolo can field 2B, SS, and 3B all at once, then sure, Pirates couldn’t use IKF.
Another thing, trading Keller makes zero sense even if Valdez is signed. Keller eats innings and top 25 amongst starters with most innings pitched in the last 6 years. Valdez will also help to have another innings eater in the rotation. Skenes can potentially eat innings next season. Having 3 starters to go 6+ innings per outting, leaves less strain on your bullpen. Ashcraft, Chandler, Harrington, Barco, and so on, will have a pitch count of 60 pitches or twice through a lineup. Then they will be pulled (usually 60 pitches by the 5th inning) and the game goes into the hands of the pen. I rather have 3 starters at the top of the rotation who can log 6+ innings and then a 2-3 innings from the pen. Backend of the rotation can see 5 innings before the pen pitches the remaining 4 innings. This will ultimately help keep the bullpen healthier and stronger for the season.
Again, this team can always improve more to help stabilise the roster. With a team like the Dodgers, whatever additional bodies that can potentially help the team, I’d take.
Well that came and went quickly. Now that Valdez has signed with Detroit, who will be the Pirates be “in on” next?
Vern Law?
Looks like IKF is heading to Boston. I feel like Pittsburgh is missing out so much. Their reputation is rough and maybe IKF wasn’t a fan of the atmosphere here. All well, win some, lose some. Williams and Cherington has their work cut out for them to influence free agents to come here. Generations of losing ball, will tarnish any reputation.
They did a good job the first half of the off season, but not the second half.
I really think that this one is a bogus offer as it should have been nowhere near what he got from the Tigers.
The Pirates are not stupid enough to trade Ashcraft after dealing Oviedo and Burrowes.
I think that Cherington was offering the money to Valdez who was the coffee grower from South America.
IKF would have been a good utility man but at $6M was a little pricey.
I think that they want to give Yorke a ML chance.
I said Jones simply cause he will start the season on the IL, but Ashcraft, Barco or Harrington will do just fine!!
If he’s upset, he’ll definitely hit the catcher. “Unintentionally” of course
I hope he signs with the Rockies. 1 Year/$3 Million.
You understand that they want Valdez so they can TRADE pitching for another bat..right?
Keller won’t bring them back a good bat and they won’t come off jones or skenes
Bird-Keller plus other pieces will though. Trades are almost never one for one.
Their current lineup doesn’t look much worse than the Guardians or Reds teams that made the playoffs last season.
That is true, so there is a shot. Unfortunately their pitching staff isn’t as well rounded as Cleveland’s and you can’t always rely on a Mets collapse like the Reds did last year.
I literally laughed out loud at that one. They have one player, O’Hearn, that was above average last season. They have 3 that were above average as hitters last season, O’Hearn, Horwitz, and Lowe. Once you get beyond the starting 9 it gets even worse. That lineup is awful.
What about the Guardians who had Jose Ramirez, Kwan (who everyone suddenly soured on), and Manzardo? And their rotation was solid enough but nothing spectacular.
I don’t think the Pirates have a great lineup but probably above the top 20 and if Griffin comes up that is another huge addition.
Last season they were 29th in wRC+. They have not improved that much with the addition of O’Hearn and Lowe.
Crazy if the Bucs can land him. Would never have guessed they were in on him.
They are going after guys fitting of Pirates reputation.
Bob’s Nutting.
Dang that would be awesome. Then get either Mayo or Paredes via trade.
Yes.
I didn’t realize you liked Mayo. lol
Where would Mayo play? 1b and DH are mostly spoken for.
3B
Sandlot-He had 7 errors in 19 games playing 3rd in Norfolk last year, and 2 in 3 games in the show. You don’t want him playing 3rd. He’d be the worst by far in baseball.
We wanted Eugenio Suarez to play 3B for us. He’ll be fine for what we need.
They should take a look at Lenyn Sosa of the White Sox.
Don’t know much about him but I’m intrigued
Somebody else the Pirates are in on and won’t land. Smoke and mirrors to fend off a MLBPA grievance.
I don’t know that Ken Rosenthal has much to gain by calling them “one of the most aggressive suitors.” They very well may lose but I am not thinking this is grievance related since there are four other teams with lower payrolls than them.
Also, saying you’re “trying” won’t prevent a grievance if they’re not actually signing anyone.
MLB Players association has never won a grievance against a team for not spending up to cba regulations. I dont think they are worried.
The MLBPA won against the A’s and they lost their revenue sharing for at least one year.
Well that’s what I get for using ai
Pirates are in zero jeopardy of losing revenue sharing. Getting that revenue sharing is # 1 through 10 on Pirates top 10 things to do. They don’t care of one is filled. Been there done that and what are they worried media is going to say they are cheap?
Why are they spending $ then? Well go back to goals 1 through 10. Why are they spending $ on players instead of increasing their real-estate value? They have a million potential seats to fill. The pressure from fans media politicians to not sit back and do nothing while having Skenes and a new TV deal to negotiate.
Bob don’t care about filling seats. As long as the Dodgers and other rich teams fill their stadiums then Bob will get paid.
Come on now. If he didn’t care about attendance there would be no fireworks bobble heads etc etc etc. Why advertise ticket plans. He cares greatly about attendance. Not caring about people giving you their $ sounds like a terrible business plan lol
Bob developed properly around PNC Park with the intention of drawing fans to the stands and those same fans pay for the restaurants and other activities before or after the game
He’s not going to make money with empty seats
You are talking about him so he just gained. Have you noticed that none of his rumors have turned out to be true this year? Its all about attention for him, not truth.
To fend off a potential MLBPA grieviance, the Pirates would actually *have to* sign him.
Agreed
Crazy this guy is one of the best workhorse pitchers there is. I think hes in the top 5 pitchers category. I think that issue with the catcher last year may have a part in this delay.
The top 5 pitchers category?
Huge part.
Yes, it’s definitely a cultural/moral consideration that pretty much sank Trevor Bauer’s career, though there is a huge difference in severity. The question becomes, “If he was willing to compromise that situation, what else is he willing to compromise?”
No idea but the pirates pitching coach knows so not worried. Hopefully he is truly awful person because it’s the only way the Pirates can get him.
100% the catcher situation from last year caused this delay. Bet it cost him about 20mil in FA too.
Do you guys make it thru the day without walking into open manholes?
Yes. That and his last 12 games. He’s a head case.
It depends on what he’s asking for. If he won’t come off of five or six years as a 32 year old then he’s not getting signed.
Offer him 30 a year for 2 years with a op out, see if he bites
That offer will be outbid.
Yet there still is not any talk about any such offers being made and only a week for pitchers to report.
Valdez was hoping for a five year deal. I think he’ll eventually take three or four years, with opt outs.
I think he would like 3 with opt outs right now and I agree he wanted 5.
Safe to say he never saw a 5 offer.
Wondering if he has ever seen a 3 with opt outs yet, too.
For Pitt to become a player, it seems as if agent may be going out and soliciting offers from teams that have never reached out. That does not bode well for Framber’s contract offers. Sure, maybe trying to use them to get a better offer but if he is having to beg for offers just to use for negotiation, he is going be disappointed.
Maybe he goes to the A’s like Severino.
Maybe PIT gets Severino from the As to look like a playa…
I would think the Pirates would want him for a longer contract and a lower AAV if they are giving up draft picks to sign him. I guess a short term might be better if they end up having to trade him at the deadline. Interesting to see what they offer hope it all comes out.
Apparently he already turned that 2/60 offer down from the Astros.
First reaction is Valdez interest is his Agent is putting that out there to drive up other offers. However, I then remembered his former Pitching coach is now in Pittsburgh.
Maybe there’s a chance?
Well you wouldn’t use the Pirates to drive prices up. 3 years 39m or whatever is their largest free agent offer ever. No one is going to be shaking in fear.
It’s actually awful pr. His market is so bad the Pirates can afford him and he’s so cheap they are willing to give up a 2nd round pick.
Saves money on that second round bonus slot too!
True but they would much rather spend $ on minimum wage until 6 years service time vs bidding wars on free market free agents. They have to spend a certain amount and that’s one of their preferred ways to do so.
Thar we go!
“We tried.”
At least PIT is in the “we tried” posturing stance that CLE used to be in years ago. Now they don’t even try.
Which of those two teams was in the playoffs last season?
The Pittsburgh Pirates get involved!
I’m rooting for the Bucs to pull this off. Not a Pirate fan but they deserve a chance to seize Skenes window of contention and go for it!
They might have a chance if they sign you because that is what they need.
If they can trade Mitch Killer’s reasonable 15 million dollar contract along with some prospects for a bat or two and apply the Keller savings to the Framber outlay, you might have a plan.
After careful consideration Framber Valdez turned down the Pirates offer of 6 years/$25 million.
To be fair, 20MM of that was deferred to 2049
You mis-read that. It was “‘6 years / $25’ Millions of fans were excited. “
Sounds about right… if they could though, I’d sign him and then trade Keller to the Mets for Bady!
Sign him, then make the trade. Bubba Chandler for Marte. Bucs would be favorites for the playoffs.
wiring
Bubba Chandlers and what other 3 top pitchers from the Pirates for Marte?
Imagine adding Valdez and Marte to the Bucs! Would they be a serious post season contender then?
marte has a no trade clause in his contract and Pittsburgh is among those teams
That doesn’t automically mean he will turn down a trade to the Pirates. Usually, players use their NTC as leverage and include teams that they think could end up trying to acquire them via trade, so they have a say in where they end up going.
Marte does not get you Chandler.
Marte is a great player, but he’s also 32 and owed anywhere between $91M & $123M (depending on bonuses).
For a team like the Pirates, the desire to avoid dead money contracts for guys 35+ will always outweigh the ability to get a guy like Marte. Especially when the price is to give up the most expensive commodity, starting pitching. Even moreso when the guy you are giving up is a top 10-12 prospect that you have at league minimum for another three seasons.
I think you have that backwards. An unproven Chandler does not get you Marte without additional prospects in the deal headed to Arizona.
I’d hope the Pirates don’t walk away from your idea, if that’s true. I’d hope they *run* away
They will run away but not because that is what it would take to trade for Marte. They will do it because Nutting is a cheapskate and is not going to spend that much money on any player.
No doubt about that. Agree 100%.
Argh matey, a pirate life for thee!
Beginning to look like the Dodgers again, isn’t it? 😀
1 year $60M. $45M deferred.
Bucs sign Valdez.
Bucs trade Keller for Parades.
This caps a perfect off-season for me.
Paredes is pretty perfectly built to not hit well in PNC. His 20 dingers from last year would have been 11 with PNCs dimensions.
Yet he still gets on base at a good clip, much better than Suarez and Triolo and IKF
You’re not wrong. I think you’d see more doubles and less HRs his spray chart would subtract a good deal of those HRs, however he will play 81 games in other parks.
The Bucs could limit Paredes’ use in home games and get Triolo some time in those games.
I would take what Paredes can offer over Triolo starting at 3B right now. Moving Keller for a different 3B piece could also be just as enticing.
Ideally, getting Brett Baty would be an even better move, but more than Keller would of course need to go along to secure that deal but that would be worth it if the minor league part of that is someone like Termarr Johnson.
Adopt Mendoza’s idea instead. Send Bart and a young arm to the Phillies for Bohm and Castellanos.
I like Bohm for the Pirates OT, but I bet if you’re patient the Phils will dfa Castellanos before/during ST.
I know Nick isn’t the perfect piece to the puzzle here, but I’d take him over Ozuna at this point
Why would the Phillies trade their starting 3B? This made sense when they were speculating on Bichette, but I don’t see the Phillies doing this for Bart and a salary dump.
Agreed. Mendoza can talk more about what they have coming up the pipeline but when they missed on Bregman and Bichette, I thought it killed any idea of Bohm coming here. Why make a strength a weakness when you’re a playoff team. But it’s nice to dream
The Pirates will need to deal for Nick Castellanos because some team higher up will sign him off waivers inasmuch as they would be paying him the league minimum salary.
The Phillies will not trade Bohm now unless they get a young starting pitcher from the Pirates.
The second half of the offseason has not even been meh if all they get is Nick.
I was hoping that they would trade Bohm to save money because they have a youngster who plays shortstop coming up who could play third base. They also have another young player who could fill in at third base adequately.
But the offer to Bichette shows that Middleton really does not care about the 110% tax that he is paying.
They will not resign Bohm after this year.
But he is not worth trading any of the young pitchers for him except for possibly Harrington especially inasmuch as he will be a free agent at the end of this year.
I’ll admit, my first thought was there’s no way Bob would approve the payroll add. But couple it with moving Keller and it gives you a lefty and doesn’t increase payroll that much. Still doubtful, but not impossible.
If the Pirates sign him it’s gonna be like Lloyd Christmas finding out for the first time that we landed on the moon. Which also btw was completely ad libbed in Dumb and Dumber
Lack of remaining impact bats in FA, but still overpay a little in prospect capital to add a real hitter with limited financial resources (not another pitcher) while Skenes around.
Most prospects aren’t all that and lowball trade offers are a yawn if trading scared….yes-the seller is supposed to get someone likely to become good for a hitter you know “is” for next 2-3 years or so.
After “failing” to sign Josh Naylor, Kyle Schwarber, Eugenio Suarez, maybe Pittsburgh should change their team name to “Bridesmaids”.
Why, is Cheapasses already taken?
I hope that for your sake that Framber is worth $40M per year.
But I doubt it.
He will end up with the Dodgers…
The Yankees have Jasson Dominguez without a clear place on the roster and a desire for pitching.
Rather send Santana and a minor league starter to Yankees for “The martian” Jasson Dominguez
The Pirates claimed Santana off waivers from the Yankees. I doubt they’d want to spend Dominguez to get him back.
I don’t know necessarily if they have a desire for SP, and to me Jasson is fine as the 4th OF that gets in there 3-4 times a week again, but I’d entertain the idea of some sort of combo of Jasson and a prospect or 2 for Keller and Santana.
they want a lefty who can eat innings
Where have they said that?
On their website
Haven’t seen that. Maybe before acquiring Weathers, I dunno, but definitely not recently and both Boone and Cashman have been making the rounds and I’ve heard neither say that. And just to mention it, if it was reported somewhere, and this website didn’t cover it, which they didn’t, then it wasn’t said by someone officially.
I believe TheMan is referring to the Pirates, who are indeed shopping for an inning eating lefty.
Now THAT would make more sense, lol. Thanks, Jaorb!
Please sign him, I don’t want him as a Blue Jay.
Not going to happen.
Such bullongnadung, Pirates are not even serious, if so prove it by signing him
I agree, but the Bucs had the best offer for Suarez and was still turned down.
Then it wasn’t the best offer, was it?
I’m sure these reporters would love nothing more than to report pirates offers are fake.
the problem is even if the pirates put in competitive offers they are often rejected because its the Pirates and not so much the money. Massive “overpay” or a lot of opt outs probably needed to make it happen for those in high demand
Is it more likely that the Pirates are serious, or that Bob Nutting is in the Epstein files and an angry fan has his number so he is actually trying?
Pay for pleasure nah Nutting doesn’t pay for anything except bare minimum to keep getting mlb revenue.
My guess is that both offers for Schwarber and Suarez were real, but they knew that they would not get Schwarber, but they thought that they would get Suarez.
I doubt that they gave Framber any offer other than a low one thinking that he was not getting any others since he had lasted so long.
Hopefully they can get Quintana now.
Pirates need a hitter not a pitcher lol
Wins are wins. Doesn’t matter where they come from.
If Pirates get Framber, that’s going to be a really good rotation. Framber would do well in a pitcher friendly park for home games.
Here come the big dogs! Good for the Bucs.
Mehhhh, everyone knew the Bucs weren’t going to get Schwarber, but they needed to look like they were seriously in on him.
Nothing to see here.
One thing you need to report is that Dana Brown has expressed interest in Valdez.
This would be a good addition for a couple of reasons.
First: Valdez is a very good SP.
Second: The Pirates don’t have a LH SP. LH hitters do better at PNC because it has a shorter RF wall. Having a LH SP would negate an opposing team’s advantage of loading their lineup with LH hitters.
As was pointed out recently the LHB benefit in PNC is likely over hyped. Yes it is short but it is also tall. the PF rating for left and right are very similar. There are more HRs to left but not much different than other parks and the quality of bats in Pittsburgh to judge with is over all lower so the sample maybe low quality.
A+ bidding
Cherington must think he has a good handle on what he’ll sign for and is confident he can offer the same amount without it being accepted.
I wish the Tigers would make an attempt for Valdez, especially if they’re absolutely not going to make Skubal a decent extension offer.
Absolutely! With Skubal, MIze, and Flaherty in the last year of their contracts, the Tigers need someone reliable to pitch in 2027 and beyond. Troy Melton might be that guy, but who knows? Jackson Jobe? Hopefully. Reese Olson? Can’t be relied on for a whole season. Make Framber an offer!
I agree with all of that except I do expect the Tigers to retain Mize beyond the 2025 season. It shouldn’t cost that much.
I meant beyond 2026.
If they give Framber $40 M per year how much is Skubal worth?
How about that… The Tigers went out and got him.
I hope they get him and ozuna, nl central will be fun this year!
Until someone makes a offer he has nothing
What if PIT signs him 4/$140m with opt outs, and then trades him for prospects at the deadline? They end up spending $25m for part of a season and then get 2-4 prospects in return. It seems like a win/win situation.
They’ll only get an outstanding prospect package if the team trading for him doesn’t realize he has opt outs!
If the Pirates beat the Orioles out that would be hilarious.
Why not? Get a top of the rotation arm at a discount. Would have to be an opt out but would be a great way to have this team make the playoffs then next season the young kids can really be developed and let it rip.
One week until camps open. One last call for alcohol.
They sign him then they could move an arm for a 3B
Somebody eventually is gonna wanna take their money
“Signing Valdez would very likely require the Pirates to put forth the largest contract in franchise history…”
Would it though? If someone had already offered him that kind of money I don’t think he’d be a FA right now.
“The largest contract in Pirates history is the 8 year, $106.75M extension signed by Bryan Reynolds in April 2023.” First $100M contract in franchise history for Pittsburgh. No way Valdez would have accepted an offer in that salary range. Not yet anyway. Might end up taking a dollar number that size or smaller on a short term deal w/opt outs.
Update: I was wrong
Not a bad idea to build a super rotation, hope to make the playoffs and ride the backs of your horses. If that is a philosophy, why trade the one non-pitcher that helps out your pitching staff more than any other? K’Bryan Hayes is arguably the very best fielding 3B in MLB, along with Matt Chapman. Should’ve kept him and added an impact bat in free agency, or traded for one. They have money to spend and Framber is the best available free agent. Do it cheapskates
Hayes was a prima donna here. He played like he’d rather be in a million other places and watching him hit was as painful as his back pain. If he was here now, they’d still be talking about the need for another bat. Good riddance
I think that Reds fans are this soon saying the same thing.
It is a shame because he is poetry at third base.
It’s like having a father that beat you every day your entire life and then walking by a bicycle shop with him every day the week before your birthday.
You’re not getting that bike.
LOL
The Pirates are determined to win games 0-0.
The Pirates are capable of scoring one run per game, and this year possibly two.
I guess the price is going down, but the Pirates might make the same mistake the Williams/Hahn CWS made: chasing veterans that don’t really fit but create a lot of off season buzz.
It makes sense to me. Bucs need a LH starter and there’s nothing in the reclamation bin. And there are no decent bats left worth spending on. So splurge for Valdez.
The only DH worth giving 500 PAs to was Schwarber. Ozuna isn’t going help much at all. I’m not enamored of any of the remaining 3b options. If Triolo figured things out in 2nd half last year, he might even be best option. Certainly we all know he can field the position. A full year of a healthy Horwitz, coupled with Lowe and O’Hearn is more runs. Maybe not a ton more runs, but enough to get Skenes 5-7 more wins. I also think Cruz and Reynolds will improve with the added lineup additions. And if Griffin is up by May, that should be even more runs.
You keep Keller and roll with the best starting staff in the NLC. It’s not the plan Cherington envisioned, but it’s at least a plan with some upside.
Pirates need offense and have the young rotation who “should” be at or near the top of the league. But totally agree getting Valdez on a decent multi year deal would free up trading another rotation arm not named skenes to get in better offense. So.. if they have a trade deal lined up with someone who isn’t int he same bidding “war” it makes perfect sense.
If they don’t have a trade target already it makes less sense as long as they’re not taking money away from getting another bat to sign Valdez I like it
Agreed. I read the headline and was taken aback but freeing up trade capital sure would be nice
I’d wonder how high they’re willing to go to sign him
I can honestly say that no one on the Pirates management and ownership team would be stupid enough to pay him what the Tigers paid him.
Sure. right. If you believe Rosenthal I have a bridge I would like to sell you. This is just another “see, we tried” situation.
And just hours later Valdez signed elsewhere. Rosenthal was wrong, again
I wonder how many of these rumors come from the Pirates themselves. Is the idea to show fans and MLB players that they are “somewhat serious” about contending while in truth, not being serious about signing any of these types of guys?
I think that you are correct about this one.
Or maybe they just threw a reasonable number in there to take a chance on getting lucky as they need another left handed starting pitcher.
Bob Nutjob
Somewhere, Andrew McCutchen is sitting there thiinking that money should go to him
Valdez is going to cost a lot more than the $5 million they would have paid McCutchen. Unfortunately it may be time for Cutch to call it a career
Hopefully Cherington and Nutting feel the same way as you and I do.
But time is running out and Cutch is the last resort.
Valdez and Ozuna would push the Pirates into at least fringe Wild Card territory
Gotta hand it to them. They’ve really taken some shots this offseason. I doubt they get him. The fact they are in his market definitely signals the price has gone down. Framber will probs get a high AAV for 4 or 5 years.
can he also hit 40 Homeruns?
honestly though, if the Pirates were actually serious they would have ponied up for Suarez. this is the m.o. for the offseason, bid on guys they know who won’t sign with them and then tell people they tried. meanwhile, the money they “offerered” goes absolutely nowhere.
offers:
31M for Schwarber.
16M for Suarez
13M for Okomoto
=60M
signed:
15M to O’Hearn
8M to Soto
=23M
so by that logic, they should have 37M to spend….
dont be fooled, they never planned on spending it
Those offers were not all at the same time. Schwarber turned them down, so they had the same money available for Suarez. Etc.
I think stko is on target, though. It could be propaganda aimed at fans and other players to say that they are indeed going to try to right the ship. It could have been done to placate Skenes, who’s gone on record to say he wants to build a winner here. Who knows?
I have serious doubts that they were ever really “in” on Schwarber. Or Naylor for that matter
I think what the comment is alluding to is the overall reality of the numbers the Pirates have been injecting into these stories. They’re nice but it’s like me going to the Mecum Auction and making a “bid” for a rare Ferrari. At least I can tell my friends that I “tried”
The Suarez thing is most mystifying here and I’m of the belief we’ll never know the back story. In the end, I just don’t think the guy wanted to play here unless he had his doors blown off. I would have liked him in the lineup but he’d be coming with a lot of red flags like K-rate that I think precluded going overboard in bidding.
I’m guessing they don’t get Valdez. I’m guessing Triolo plays 3rd. I’m guessing being “all in” stopped when Lowe and O’Hearn came to town
They gave an honest effort on Suarez and he may very well be sorry that he did not take the two guaranteed years.
They knew that Schwarber was going back to the Phillies.
Your logic is illogical.
They also have made trades for players and will be paying more for the players coming in than went out.
They also would not have signed both Okomoto and Suarez to play the same position.
The offer to Suarez was real.He just wanted to play in Cincinnati.
They knew that Schwarber was going back to the Phillies.
I’d let him hit my catcher once per game if need be. No way that is significantly impacting his market. It’s not like Bonds choking Kent in the dugout. Lol
In order to join bidding there would need to be bidding.
Ticket sales must be slumping so out come the “sources” who have been “briefed”. Yeah, the Pirates were the most aggressive suitor. Sure they were.
He would look tidy in the Blue Jays rotation giving them a real left hander to break up the righty heavy group
Good luck pirate maybe you can get em
