The Yankees officially announced they’ve re-signed Paul Goldschmidt on a one-year deal. It’s reportedly a $4MM guarantee for the Excel Sports Management client, who’d earn another $500K apiece at 400, 450, 500 and 550 plate appearances. Clarke Schmidt has been placed on the 60-day injured list to open a spot on the 40-man roster. He’ll miss most or all of the season recovering from Tommy John surgery.
It’ll be Goldschmidt’s second season in the Bronx. The former MVP signed a $12.5MM deal last offseason to serve as New York’s everyday first baseman. The role will be different this year, as Goldschmidt seems ticketed for more of a short side platoon job after Ben Rice outplayed him last season. The left-handed hitting Rice connected on 26 homers with a .255/.337/.499 batting line across 530 trips to the plate.
Goldschmidt managed only 10 home runs in a similar amount of playing time. His .274/.328/.403 slash was a little better than league average. It came with dramatic splits, both in terms of handedness and timeliness. Goldschmidt started his Yankee tenure on a tear, hitting .338/.394/.495 with six longballs through the end of May. That plummeted to a .226/.277/.333 performance over the final four months of the season. It was essentially an inverse of his 2024 campaign in St. Louis. Goldschmidt started that year very slowly before picking it up in the second half.
Between his late-season struggles and Rice’s breakout year, the seven-time All-Star lost playing time as the season progressed. His plate appearance tally dropped in each month. Goldschmidt will remain in the lineup against left-handed pitching, as he continued to tee off on southpaws even as his numbers against righties dropped. He’s coming off a .336/.411/.570 slash against left-handers compared to a .247/.289/.329 mark when he didn’t hold the platoon advantage. Seven of his 10 home runs came off lefties even though he saw twice as many plate appearances versus right-handers.
Rice had seven homers in 119 plate appearances against lefties, but it came with a .208 average and .271 on-base mark. Even if the Yankees don’t want to make him a strict platoon bat, they’ll time some of his rest days against tough southpaws. Goldschmidt can pick up those at-bats and offers a fallback at designated hitter in case Giancarlo Stanton misses time. Lefty-hitting catcher Austin Wells had reverse splits last season but is a career .218/.282/.360 hitter against southpaws. If the Yankees want to continue giving Rice scattered reps behind the plate, they could shield Wells from a lefty and start Goldschmidt at first.
At 38, Goldschmidt is clearly on the downswing of what should be a Hall of Fame career, but he can still be productive if deployed in a more limited role. He’s also highly respected off the field and was just named to the U.S. World Baseball Classic roster for the third time in his career. He clearly made a strong impression in the clubhouse and with the coaching staff.
The late-season drop in playing time evidently didn’t sour him on giving it another go in pinstripes. Joel Sherman of The New York Post reports that he passed on more money from other teams to remain in the Bronx. The Padres were reportedly among the finalists as they look for one more bat after agreeing to a deal with Miguel Andujar. The Diamondbacks spent most of the offseason looking for a right-handed hitting first baseman. A reunion in the desert seemed to make sense, but it was clear that wouldn’t come to pass when the Snakes agreed to terms with Carlos Santana earlier this week.
New York has a lineup that skews to the left side generally. GM Brian Cashman and manager Aaron Boone had spoken multiple times about wanting to add a righty bat for balance. Goldschmidt joins utility infielder Amed Rosario as righty options off the bench. José Caballero would also be in that mix if Anthony Volpe reclaims the shortstop job once he returns from shoulder surgery.
They’re going to carry lefty-hitting J.C. Escarra as a backup catcher. That would only leave one bench spot for Oswaldo Cabrera and Jasson Domínguez if everyone gets through camp healthy. The Post’s Jon Heyman wrote on Thursday that it seems likely Domínguez will be optioned to Triple-A to begin the season. That’s even more probable with Goldschmidt back, though Spring Training injuries could certainly change the picture.
The Yankees will pay a 110% tax on the $4MM salary ($4.4MM) as third-time CBT payors in the top bracket. It’s an $8.4MM investment overall. RosterResource calculates their competitive balance tax number around $333MM. They had a $320MM tax payroll last year, leaving them with a nearly $62MM bill at season’s end.
Jeff Passan of ESPN first reported the Yankees and Goldschmidt were finalizing an agreement. Ronald Blum of The Associated Press reported that Goldschmidt was likely to make no more than $5MM. Jon Heyman of The New York Post reported the $4MM salary and incentives. Image courtesy of Jeff Curry, Imagn Images.

World Baseball Classic. Mr Showtime has fond memories of 2006
good times
NYY are their own worst enemy
They can’t sign players that are actually quality & that are wanted by other teams. They can’t even sign low hanging fruit, they just pick the fruit off the ground. The NYY needed Valdez, at least for 1/2 season then could have traded him or something. They needed Bo Bichette at shortstop and a 3b and 1B. They just can’t get anyone to play in NY. Valdez goes to Detroit & & Bo goes to the Mets!!!!! Yankees will have no gloves or bats at 3b, SS, 1B. I give Jazz some credit but it’s the NYY he should be the below average players the NYY infield not the shining star.
“They needed Bo Bichette at shortstop”
lol
@178 0IQ
Jazz was +7 defWAR at second base, McMahon +8 at third. Volpe was league average (+0.3) despite errors in 2025, but in 2024 he posted +16 defWAR and was a +3.5 WAR shortstop. With an arm injury involved, are we sure he’s washed defensively?
Who should the Yankees sign instead? Alonso at 5/$175M when he’s -18 defWAR compared to Rice, who’s younger, cheaper, better defensively, hit 26 homers, and could reach 35+? Bichette at 4/$240M plus 110% luxury tax to play where? He’s worse defensively at shortstop than Volpe, worse at second than Jazz, has never played third, and doesn’t have McMahon’s arm. I love Bichette’s bat, but not at the cost of weakening infield defense.
Framber Valdez at 3/$215M plus luxury tax penalties and lost draft picks made no sense with five healthy starters and two more returning mid-season. That’s poor resource allocation for a non-priority need.
If you think Valdez is worth $38M/year + luxury tax, on a team that already has five $30+M players, for “1/2 season” maybe you should take over Costanza’s desk?
Isn’t that the guy that put them in that Ramada in Milwaukee?
So who’s their SS that’s better? Avoiding paying players crying “luxury tax “ is shameful. Just as the teams that pay players and win in the post season OR win the last game of the season since 2010. Waiting……
Jazz is 2B. NYY needs SS & 3b. Desperately. Jazz can’t play all 3.
Worth picking up & trading IF they regain thier rotation.
McMahon is a Gold Glove-caliber starter at 3B and making $16M, he’ll also have more than six weeks with NYY batting coaches to straighten out his swing, Caballero led the AL in SB in 2024 and 2025 and is more than capable to hold the fort, Just stop, you’re acting like a Mets fan.
Cabellaro.
Seems kind of pointless, but it also seems unlikely to impede them from achieving anything they’d like to if it doesn’t work out.
Pointless to have mvp production vs LHP?
When the only position they can play is 1B. Yeah, that’s a wasted bench spot IMO
Can play 1 position even better
$4 for a HoF who still hits lefties a ton and can continue to mentor Rice? Nah, not pointless at all. Very smart move.
I tend to doubt he’s gonna do that again. I reckon he’ll be decent to solid against lefties, pretty lousy (in very limited action) against righties, and that he’s play pretty good defense at the least important defensive position. He’ll be a positive contributor, but not a significant one. I wouldn’t bet heavily on him finishing the season on the active roster.
Good lord. To be sure they could do better than that.
“Championship caliber….”
“I feel really good about our group of guys….”
“Real First place team move”
Do better than 981 ops good luck
It is
Yeah, this lineup would mash in 2019.
In 2024 a lesser version had lil issues in the regular season
I’m sure he’ll be in a strict platoon with Rice. Guy still crushes lefties
His OPS+ against RHP vs LHP is a bigger divide than the Grand Canyon.
You hurt Paul’s feelings
Cashman hurt mine first.
I recommend group therapy for the two of you
If he can hit lefties, then he’ll serve a purpose. He seems to have accepted he’s now. a platoon and bench bat. You’ll also be happy he’s there for late-inning defense.
“There just wasn’t a market for left fielders…”
Better than $4 for a guy that still washes lefties and cam continue to mentor Rice at a position he’s been a MVP at? Nope.
Sal my problem with it is he’s a platoon first baseman/DH only. He has no defensive versatility and isn’t very athletic. He still hits lefties reasonably well and plays good defense at first but that’s about it.
Also if Rice is going to get better, he needs to play as much as possible. He won’t improve sitting on the pine.
What else do you need? Our starting lineup is set. We had no real backup first baseman and heck our starter isn’t a career 1b either. I’ve been saying all offseason that was an area of need. There was no better option for this particular role.
I’d prefer to get someone who could back up both corners and ideally back up the outfield as well. IKF would have been my choice.
Ahmed, Jazz, Cabbie, and Waldo can all play 3rd. IKF still can’t offer the most important part of Goldy resigning and that’s mentoring Rice. Goldy is a former MVP, GG winner, and probably future HOFer. I mean you can’t get better than that right now to perform that specific task and for 4 mil, that’s fantastic. Rice needs that more than simply playing everyday because he wasn’t a natural 1b.
You have Cabrera – Belli – Goldy – Rice
I think they want to keep Belli in the OF as much as possible. Waldo is just OK at 1b.
Does a guy who’s been in the Big Apple for a couple of years still need mentoring. Seems like a coach could do that at a lesser price.
Rice was a rookie at 1B. Still you needed a platoon piece no?
🫵😂 Yankees
Joking of course.
Over/under 50% before he’s DFA’d by June? Or sometime in the month of June
Over
Agreed. He’s not going to get a lot of playing time as Rice is earmarked for 1B.
Let me text Yasiel Puig and see if he knows someone that would take that bet…
Too soon?
Nope!
Doubtful as I can see Goldy at 1B when a lefty is pitching with Rice catching and Wells to the bench. Wells against lefties is far worst than Rice and at least you keep a good bat in the lineup.
Cash only likes guys over 35. This will eat into rice’s development and in a year from now they’ll be wondering why he had a sophomore slump…
He’s a capable bench piece who hits from the right side and can still mash lefties. He’ll help tremendously on a team that has six left-hand hitting starters. He’ll play in something like 45-50 games. Not going to break the bank. Not going to delay anyone’s development. Relax.
if you’re the actual guy fromthe yanksgoyard site, either Weinrib or Cannanato (sp?) nobody needs your worthless takes on the yankees anyway. Snark isn’t an informed opinion.. Ironic you’re not bashing the move like you do most yankee moves
I can see why some may roll their eyes; rolling it back right? I do feel this could help mentor Ben to become a better 2 way player!
@big
Yet Goldy is the only guy he’s acquired after they were already +35. Shut up please. They have 8 position players under 30 and right now Gil, Warren, Schlittler and Weathers aren’t even 28 yet.
He wont be the starter
Long as he plays only vs LH and is less then 6 million per, it a quality signing
MRSHOWTIME:
A guy who can only play first base and only play against left-handed pitchers. Seems like kind of a waste of a roster spot to me.
He can DH too. What they really need to do is DFA Stanton.
Are you a Red Sox fan? Why would you DFA Stanton? He is still a productive and dangerous hitter.
Seamaholic:
I get that he can DH too. But anyone can DH. When you have a guy like that, he kind of clogs up the DH spot. I just don’t think it’s good construction of a roster to add a guy like that.
Why DFA Stanton ?
Well, that’s unlikely to happen. Stanton & Yankees are locked in on 500 HR. And sitting at 453, IF he can stay healthy & play in 130-140 games/season, he has a sporting chance of doing it in pinstripes under this current contract. Hell, even an outside chance of doing it this year! And, I for one, will be right there applauding him with the rest of the Yankee fans at the Stadium as the flashbulbs go off.
There’s a better chance, if he does hit 500 HRs as a Yankee, of him retiring after the 2027 season and both sides restructuring that final year of his contract.
Probably cuz he’s born in like 2009 and is still a teenager and wants to look cool. He’s gotten attention, maybe not the best one here.
Stanton. Was quite good when he was healthy enough to DH. Not worth his salary but would be CRAZY to DFA him and pay him.
What??? Stanton still mashing when he is healthy and remember Yankees only on the hook for $19 million and $15 million next 2 yrs a bargain for Stanton. Marlins pick up $30 million in last 3 yrs with $10 million going towards his 2028 $10 million option which will be declined!
The Yankees don’t care about 500 homers. They’ve been there a few times. They do care about him continuing to be productive for 2 more years.
He’s only signed through ‘27 with a club option for ‘28 so your last paragraph is meaningless.
77 games last year lol. Yanks fleeced the fish.
Wait till you see the contract numbers.
@Mikes
Plenty of pinch-hitting possibilities vs tough lefties considering he can sub/ replace Rice or pinch hit for Wells, Jazz and McMahon with late inning defensive replacement from Caballero or Rosario. And if Stanton or any other starter goes down then Goldy can step in at 1B (injury to Rice or Wells)or Stanton at DH.
KnicksFanCavsFan:
I get what you’re saying. He’s not a useless player or anything. I just think his role is very limited and again it’s another old guy. Sooner or later he’s just going to be completely shot and you don’t wanna end up signing him in the year that happens. It’d be nice to have younger guys who are more versatile.
@Miken
Right now the Yanks don’t really have a viable replacement at 1B should Drive bed a day off or get hurt, aside from Bellinger. Even with Dominguez as the 4th OF there’s a likelihood of a 2nd injury. He’s an old guy that got over. 900 OPS vs lefties who is NOT being asked to play everyday. All he has to do is sub for Rice at 1B, perhaps DH if needed and pinch-hit, as needed, for lefties of needed to be replaced on defense. That’s it. And if he struggles, cut him. But what you dint want is to call up a prospect and ask him to play every couple of days. Gildy is a vet who knows how to keep himself ready. Any wisdom or mentoring he might provide is gravy.
KnicksFanCavsFan:
But again, an older player who’s been slowing down. At what point does he completely fall off the cliff? He did a lot of damage the first two months of the season and then significantly slowed down production wise. I’m not saying it’s the worst signing in the world, but if I was the Yankees, I would go for more positional flexibility, which I think this roster desperately needs.
$4 mil, great deal.
I’m old enough to remember when $4 mil meant something.
I guess they couldn’t afford Ty France.
Yeah..
Ty France hasn’t been good sine 2022!
Ty France is the 2025 Gold Glove Winner as the very BEST defensive first baseman in the American League, Better than Rice, Better than Goldschmidt, Better than Vladdy…
FACT!!!
Who cares about the Gold Glove? You need slug at that position.
Across the board, France’s defensive metrics shot up this season. He was worth 10 Outs Above Average, which led all Major League first basemen. What a change from one year ago, when France’s -12 OAA painted him as a weak defender.
That’s right… but, you Yanks will keep with what you’ve been doing – lately – you’ll keep Stanton doing what he’s been capable of, and that “slug” that he gives you really got you what you wanted in ‘25!!!???
We all in the AL East like that you
“Trust in Cash”, and if you keep doing it, the Jays will demonstrate that both Stanton and Cash will not see the ‘27 season in pinstripes…!!!
Fact…
Projected end of season standings for 2026:
1- Jays
2- Baltimore
3- Red Sox
4- Yankees
5- Rays
He carried the Yanks in 24 WS run.
@Florida
If you really think the Yanks are going to end up in 4th place then you’re crazy and delusional. The Yanks tied for most wins in the AL East without their ace and 2 other SP (Cole, Gil and Schmidt) for most of the season. They were without Stanton for half the season. Struggled thru 400 AB of LeMeheui, Peraza and Cabrera at 3B. Dealt with an inconsistent backend of the pen with Williams blowing save opps. And going into the season with a healthy Freid, Gil, Warren, Schlittler and Weathers they’ll hopefully not be giving away 23 starts to guys like Stroman, Yarborough and Carrasco.
Meanwhile, ppl seem to gloss over issues that exist elsewhere. The Jays lose Bassitt and Bichette and relaxed them with Cease (4.58 ERA, +5 ERA away from PETCO). Ponce and Okamato, two stars from leagues widely seen as below mlb competition. A now 36 yo Springer that had an amazing bounce back season after two below average seasons. Is Okamato going to be a reliable replacement for Bichette’s bat? What pitching did Baltimore acquire that’s going to improve on their 4.65 ERA from SP or among the fewest IP. Is Alonso’s bat supposed to save a lineup that didn’t have a single player with more than 85 runs or 68 RBIS? The Red Sox are the only team I’m scared of. Rogers Suarez is a very good SP and while Sonny Gray isn’t elite, he can be a good #3 or #4 guy. The loss of Bregman is their only major concern.
@FLORIDA
TY France had a horrible split vs lefties which would be the only reason they are bringing in Goldy. Why can’t you get that?
Why? He’s being brought in to hit vs lefties and continue to teach Rice. Ty France cannot offer the same level of mentorship.
Running it back!
Maybe Hicks and DJ are willing to play a few too!
BREAKING: Vernon Wells coming out of retirement.
Core Four says hold our beers.
I’d say Cashman should give Yasiel Puig’s agent a call but I wouldn’t bet on it.
He needs to! He would probably be the best SS on their roster at this point.
I guess? I generally think that the only way a player gets better vs same side pitching is for more game time reps. I wish two things don’t happen:
a) they create a frequent platoon situation for Rice/Goldy
b) they move Rice to C and move Wells. Even with the nullification of his farm pitching Benstar of the robots, Wells is still a better overall C than Rice and I think they should limit exposing Rice to the physical perils of catching.
Rice is a DH-type that might be able to play 1B well enough to be a regular there. Unless he’s really improved defensively over the offseason behind the plate, I don’t see that being an option anymore
@dirt
Rice is far from a GG 1B but he is a legit 1b and an average to slightly below average C at this point. 50 games at 1b, 48 at c and 36 at DH. The best 1B had a +2 DefWar. Rice had a -2 which still had him in the top half. But he shouldn’t be C at a regular rate, not even more than maybe 20 games imo. Wells is elite with a +18 DefWar whereas Rice had a +.02, basically league average. I just prefer him to avoid the West and tear of V and just focus on hitting and holding down 1B duties 85% of the time, and if they can find a better right C to back up Wells, then 0 time at the C position.
Knicks fan is the smartest guy in the room…besides myself.
They really are running it back!
I love Goldy but how is this a roster fit? Honestly Jones and Dominguez both have no spot. Oswald Cabrera is also out a spot. Just cut Stanton at this point because there is absolutely no roster space. They signed that Mexican league mvp Nick Sanchez to a minor league deal so he also has no roster spot. I don’t understand what’s going on here because Goldy can only play first and Rice is your first baseman.
It’s Nick Torres btw.
Starters:
C: Wells (LH)
1B: Rice (LH)
2B: Chisolm (LH)
3B: McMahon (LH)
SS: Caballero (RH)
LF: Bellinger (LH)
CF: Grisham (LH)
RF: Judge (RH)
DH: Stanton ( RH)
Bench: Escarra (RH), Cabrera (S), Rosario (RH), Goldsmicht (RH), Dominguez (S).
Plenty of room for everyone. Maybe they choose to go with an extra bullpen arm for stretches, so Cabrera gets optioned. So be it. Only real crunch happens when Volpe is healthy enough to return, but having too many options at that point in time will be good to have. In the short term, adding another right bat provides much needed balance, which this team very much needed!
Escara is a left handed bat. Also they won’t roster 5 bench bats. It will only be 4. Dominguez probably starts the season in AAA, unless there is an injury.
Has anybody seen Dominguez try to play defense. Pretty entertaining.
Uhhh – you’ve got 14 guys on a 13 man roster. Just sayin’.
O Cab will start in AAA to see how the ankle is, and Dominguez may too to play everyday, though until Volpe’s back 1 may be up as a bench lefty bat if Vivas isn’t there short term.
@Billy
I don’t understand the takes ppl have right now.
a) Dominguez found 450 AB last year under the same circumstances.
b) Stanton is likely to get injured and that creates opportunities for other like it did for Rice last year.
c) Any injury to any OF, Rice or Wells can create players moving around.
d) Grisham is no lock to hold down his position and can be traded mid-season or walk after the end of the season. That creates a spot for Dominguez or Jones.
e) Jones is 25 in May. Keys not act as if he can’t benefit for another year at AAA to cut down on his strikeouts. Key him begin in AAA and make him earn a call up by having a great start.
f) Cashman should be crucified if he sold low on Dominguez..257/.338 with 23 SB isn’t a bag year for a 22 yo rookie under the bright lights. We can’t clamor for youth and building fun the farm and them get slammed and want to move away from a guy who struggled a little in his first full season.
g) Nick Torres and Cabrera are utility/depth guys at this moment. Don’t waste your time worrying about blocking anyone. Any injury in the IF might open up AB for Cabrera Any waiver claim in the minors is strictly for depth purposes.
.980 OPS vs. lefties in ’25 – that split alone has to be good for a win or two.
Goldy for his career is .277/.364/.479 against righties.
He likely had some sort of ailment that hindered his performance late last season.
Definitely getting old but one more season, knowing it is likely his last, he will be ready to go and this guy can hit, its a great addition to the Yanks.
The ailment was old age!
Goldys “ailment”, was showing up, and resigning that loser calls for a front office change
Backup 1st baseman vs lefties, continue to mentor Rice? Right handed bench bat. Total fit.
Torres is a minor league backup right now.
He’s fine. He will only be in against lefties to give Wells or Rice a break; unlike last year when he played way too much
They are really running it back from last year. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Pathetic.
:)
Sk8
“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results”
No. It’s not
Thank you Jaun I get so tired of hearing people say that lol
The Yankees results have been pretty darn good the last few years. Not sure why you would complain.
By reading the posts on here day after day it’s obvious most people commenting do not watch and/or understand MLB. It’s like a horrific accident that I just can’t turn away from, what a world. 🤣
Btw, the Yankees finish tied w/the best record in the AL in 25
@Sk8
no insanity is thinking winning 94 games with 3 starting pitchers and your full time DH was a failure. Post-season aside, how many teams, other than the Dodgers, could accomplish that? In fact, they won more games than the Dodgers in a tougher division. Yanks are going into ST excluding a healthy rotation of Freid/Gil/Warren/Schlittler/Weathers with Rondon and Cole coming back later. They should be set with good options at 1B, 2B, 3B, C and am OF that was the most productive last year leading in several OF categories. The bullpen had two guys that have been closers and Cruz in the bullpen. That’s plenty of time to strengthen it too.Or they could wait to Rondon come back and send a SP to the pen. Stop panicking. Bregman would’ve been nice but not for 5/$175 mil, especially when you have 3/$32 mil invested in McMahon. I’m not a huge fan of McMahon but I’D rather give him 600 AB vs LeMeheu, Perazza and Cabrera. I think he might even hit 30 homers with a shorter RF wall than Coors Field. I’m excited about this season.
Keep telling yourself that, Knick boy. The Yankees are the only team in the AL East who have not tried to improve. Their only real new acquisition has been Weathers. Running it back with Grisham, Bellinger, Yarbrough, Rosario, Blackburn and now Goldschmidt? Enjoy your delusions.
@machine
The “running it back” criticism ignores that Cashman already did the heavy lifting at last year’s trade deadline, acquiring pieces that actually worked. The Yankees’ outfield of Judge, Grisham, Bellinger, and Dominguez ranked #1 in WAR, home runs, runs, batting average, and OBP—why wouldn’t you run that back?
The postseason failure was clearly about our star players failing, not Cashman’s failure to assemble championship-caliber teams. The roster was built to win—the execution fell short.
I don’t like making excuses, but take away Crochet from the Red Sox plus two more starters and a middle-of-the-order bat for half the season. Take away Bassitt, Gausman, and Springer from Toronto for most of the season. Would anyone expect them to still make the playoffs, let alone win 94 games tied for most in the AL?
The bullpen struggles with Weaver and Williams were addressed by trading for proven closers David Bednar and Camilo Doval, both with 30-save seasons on their resumes. Bednar was excellent in 24 IP (2.19 ERA), while Doval’s full-season numbers (3.58 ERA) suggest better production ahead.
At third base, the Yankees wasted 450 at-bats on Peraza, Cabrera, and others. McMahon’s 40% hard-hit rate and left-handed power profile could produce 25-30 homers in Yankee Stadium.
Cashman deserves credit for acquiring McMahon, Bednar, Doval, Caballero, and Weathers without surrendering a top-20 prospect except Pereira and Riggio. A full year of Rice at first, McMahon at third, and not wasting starts on Stroman, Yarbrough, and Carrasco adds significant value. These deadline additions and offseason tweaks could add 6+ wins. The foundation was built mid-season—this winter just required fine-tuning what already worked.
The Yankees will be good I believe. After all, you could be a Cardinals fan like me instead..Yankees fans should be thankful..
“ Machine Gun”… There’s no arguing with those fools… The best signing the Yankees made was resigning the batboy!!!
I have the Yanks as the favorites to win the AL East, four teams vying for the title this season.
Should be a good season.
The ABS is in, should be a fine if you tap your hat.
Every call to the ABS needs to be met with raucous BOOS from the entire stadium.
I don’t see how this helps. Who REALLY needs a weakside platoon, 1B only player?
The Yankees do, evidently.
@don
a team that can afford it and had an injury prone DH?
World baseball classic
That absolutely makes me happy. They need that right hand batter off the bench. Plus, he’s a great defensive guru. Good re-sign
Hopefully this doesn’t mean a platoon for Rice. He needs to be given his shot at full time at bats.
The boys are back in town!
Look say what you want about Cashman, but he firmly believes in this particular roster. I give him credit for doubling down on it. Let’s see how it works out.
Personally, I like it because Goldy’s still good in spurts and continues to give Rice a mentor. That, to me, shows that the Yanks are serious about Rice being the future there.
Goldy’s also locking down a future coaching gig, no doubt.
Welcome back!
I get the logic. There was hints of a perfect alignment in their lineup and roster construction last year. They are clearly hoping to learn from their mistakes/miscalculations with each player and run it back with an improved strategy to implement each individual piece and basically perfect what they had in 2025, minus the pieces they let go of completely in DJLM, etc.
Plus Volpe not at SS? Maybe Cabellero is not SS worthy but neither was Volpe last year. At least Jose can mash. Defense is overrated in today’s three true outcome era
Lol
It really sucks to see him regress due to his age after 2022. He was the definition of consistent production. I hope he gets one more good year before hanging up his spikes, but it looks unlikely in New York with Ben Rice at 1st now.
It is so funny how Goldschmidt was a surprise prospect. I got him on my Scoresheet fantasy team after he had identical metrics and hit 30 homers in back to back season in AA and AAA. His bat speed dropped his last year in St. Louis. That was the beginning of the end.
Goldy skipped AAA. Those were A and AA
I felt the same way about Joey Votto and Miggy of recent memory.
He is not necessarily Ben Rice’s platoon partner; he is Wells’ platoon partner. I think Rice will catch against Lefties and Wells against righties.
He’s so old!
Well, I mean, old in baseball terms.. He’s younger than me actually.
Sigh…
Good move for the Yankees. We are getting 1 step closer to dealing Walker.
A true iron man, his days of putting up 30 dingers are gone, however is always well conditioned, never injured and the ultimate professional. Will come up with clutch hits in big situations. Good to have on the bench come playoffs.
A Goldschmidt return to the Yankees was probably inevitable after the D’backs brought in a Black Magic Woman…
Welcome to your 2026 RUNNING IT BACK NEW YORK YANKEES!!!
Getting the band back together. I wonder what Buck Martinez thinks?
Now they have two Schmidts. Awful beer.
Literally… No, not in the way people use the word to exaggerate a point… I mean LITERALLY ran the exact same team back.
Sigh. Well, if you were hoping for a big, bright and shiny new thing….nope. He could be useful, but I’d have preferred a younger player getting the chance.
@mike
I’m no way shadow or form will Rice not be the everyday 1b. The Yanks would’ve been in top of any RH bat that could play defense and hit lefties. Andujar would’ve been perfect but you likely don’t want him at 1b, 3b or LF and he probably felt he could get more AB signing with a team other than the Yanks. Goldy was the best RH platoon bat on the market.
Why? His bat speed was gone by midseason. It’s only going to get worse a year older.
He hit over. 90 OPS vs lefties. What are you missing?
Looking at the current 40=man roster, not sure who to DFA. Maybe an insignificant trade coming.
Bido probably, easy come, easy go.
Schmidt was put on the 60 day. At this point I’m not sure any NRI makes the roster so they may not need another 40 man spot for a while
Last best chance getting into and winning a WS. Good move by both sides.
Dreams do come true!!
It’s funny as hell how much you Yankee haters are whining about them “running it back” when they tied for the best record in the AL, just 3 behind the Brewers for best overall record. That without Cole, without much at all from Gil or Schlittler and yet it is somehow bad to have a similar roster because they lost in the playoffs to the eventual AL champs. Hahaha. Amazing what a sack of confused children are on this site. Can’t wait to hear your whining at the end of the season.
To quote every Yankee fan ever, “Injuries are a part of the game.”
To quote every Yankee fan ever, “We had so many injuries, we could’ve been a contender.”
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.
Quoted from the biggest whiner on this site. But seriously, hayzalicious, what injuries am I complaining about? None, no complaints at all. We simply lost in the playoffs to the Blue Jays last year – stuff happens. Remind us all how your team’s season ended.
@why
This!!!! 👆👆👆👆👆👆. The idea that we MUST get rid of Dominguez or Jones because we have 3 OF or scoffing at depth moves like Goldy or any of the minor league signings is crazy. How liable would Cashman na not have contingency plans for injuries?
The biggest glaring stat that shows Goldschmidt’s decline is his walk totals the last few seasons. He used to have a great eye and take his walks. But now with the super high velocity arms all across the league and his aging bat speed, the man has to cheat to make contact. And that leads to him swinging at pitches he normally wouldn’t go after and finding weaker contact. Fortunately he isn’t swinging and missing any more than he usually does. Let’s just hope he has a few more hot months left in him against southpaws. He’s a great player who made his legacy in two other cities so it will be hard to watch impatient Yankee fans booing him when he’s struggling. But that’s what happens when you take a chance of joining another franchise at the tail end of the career. You risk a twilight exit without the local fan support your career deserves.
His bat speed has remained very consistent since ’23. No public data before that.
If this was more than one year 3.5m, glad the Dbacks stayed away
Only 28 more home runs to 400. Do it Goldy!
six two and even he doesn’t get there…
I feel like they need to trade jasson at this point, all this up and down stuff feels like they’re ruining his chance. Trade him somewhere he can get everyday reps, sink or swim.
His value is low(ered)
Agreed but unless he gets a chance to prove he’s more than a prospect it’s only gonna get worse. Surely the white Sox or Rockies could give him and everyday job…
No they don’t.
Why?
@oppo
Since starting the year with the team out of ST when exactly a he sent down? Stop listening to rumors
Goldie is a great guy, but at this stage in his career, he is a very good player for my opponent team to have.
So, happy to see him in pinstripes again
Good player, yes. He’s just no longer the everyday needle-mover a club that wants to contend needs.
@ machine
He’s not being brought in to be an everyday starter bro. He’s a RH bat that will, at times replace Rice vs lefties when he’ll either sit or shift to C to spell Wells or he’ll be a RH bat vs lefties in late innings situations to pinch hit for Wells, Jazz, McMahon or Grisham with a defensive replacement from others.
The Yankees need a RH hitting catcher. Unfortunately we traded a very good RH bat in Flores to pirates but in return we got Bednar.
Time to visit Pittsburgh again as they currently have a logjam of RH hitting catchers. Joey Bart and Henry Davis.
They can use a LH platoon bat so trading Escarra and Oswaldo Cabrera who now does not have a roster spot and maybe add a minor league arm in the deal for Henry Davis who is currently below average defensively, has a big hole in his swing but he’s still young with tremendous power and can possibly fill in corner outfield when not catching because his arm is huge. This solves two problems and he’s still young plus he’s native upstate NY kid.
Gildy is the only player he absurd when they eye over the age of 35. You’re so silly dude. I’m not a fan of paining young guys but I could see a path where Rice moves to C vs tough lefties to spell Wells. They both OPS in the low .700-.750 but Rice has more power vs lefties. Goldy could take over 1b on those occasions. 120 games at 1B, 25 at C, 20 games and 20 games off after C. I would prefer someone that could play 3B too but the market was slim on those RH who hit lefties and played those positions at a decent level. If Stanton goes down then he could be full-time DH or platoon with Dominguez. And if it doesn’t work out or clubs the situation I’m sure the $$$ isn’t much.
I like this role for him at this point in his career. Can strike fear into any left handed starter, or reliever. A good backup to a rising star in Rice. Hes got game left. Surprised he didnt have more interest in FA.
A+ 981 ops for under 5m no brainer.
Um….so they’re literally running it back minus Weaver and Williams? They are aware they finished 2nd in the east and lost 3-1 in the division series? And they are running it back. Such a corporate c uck move. Stay a “playoff” team all year (like that means Jack anymore) and bonus money equals any playoff revenue…and you stay relevant enough to sellout the park while not actually attempting to win a World Series. WOW.
They’re trying to win as much as any other team is. Playoffs involve a lot of luck and good timing.
Hammerin’ Hank:
I think the point he’s making is that they did nothing to actually improve. They just brought the same team back, hence not actually improving. Who knows if they’ll have a better season or not, but every fan wants to see their team do something to make their team better, and you can’t say the Yankees actually did anything to make their team better.
@Yanks
The Yanks tied for most wins in the AL and that’s despite not having Cole, Gil, Schmidt and Stanton. Now imagine if the starts are NOT going to Stroman, Yarborough and but to Weathers, Schlittler and hopefully Gil. Imagine instead of Cabrera, Peraza and Orbit at 3b you have a legit gold glove 20+ homer guy in McMahon. Imagine instead of Weaver and Williams struggling there’s Bednar and Doval. The heavy lifting was done homie.
Of course.
Sort of a fun fact: Paul Goldschmidt is one of only 5 players all-time with 350+ home runs, 150+ steals, and 60+ bWAR. The others include Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez, Mike Trout, and Gary Sheffield. 3 players that would be in the HOF if it weren’t for their connection to PEDs, a future HOFer, and Goldschmidt. Pretty good place to start if you want to argue his HOF candidcy.
He will probably be the only guy on the list w under 500 hrs. Maybe under 400 too
Run. It. Back.
It’s déjà vu all over again.
Fills a glaring need.
Should play against every LHP.
Rice can catch some of those and Stanton can go to LF for some.
It spells Grisham, Wells, and Rice against LHP they all struggle with.
Nice move. The Yankees are not even trying to improve. They are just running it back with the same cast of has-beens from last year. This is the cheapest I’ve ever seen them be. It’s pretty bad when the winter’s most exciting new acquisition is Ryan Weathers.
It’s really hard to improve on the best record in the AL.
*Tied. And 5-8 vs TOR and 4-9 vs BOS plus the embarrassment against TOR in the postseason. Seems like they could have made an effort to change some things.
Did the Yankees and Phillies sell their broadcasting rights to Hallmark channel? Because all I see are reruns
imho the yankees overvalue makeup and clubhouse vibes but it’s hard to be too grumpy about this at 5M. if stanton somehow stays healthy and rice continues to improve they won’t be giving goldschmidt many at-bats
This is the role he should have had last year.
I just hope they have the discipline not to overextend him if he starts off well or not to force playing time if he’s looking every bit of 38.
Cashman will reacquire Williams and Weaver, next..
WHY
Factoring the 110% CBT hit, it seems like a lot to pay for the secondary role they have in mind for him. The Yankees must really value Goldschmidt’s clubhouse leadership.
Yankees need to free up a space or 2 for a younger player. I would like to see dominguez and Spencer Jones get some at bats. Although I think Dominguez will be dealt for a solid 8th inning reliever and prospect. As far as goldy coming back it doesn’t hurt but for the cost of 5 million and wondering if there was a injury can goldy give solid production everyday at his age? Hopefully he can but I think I’d rather have Rhys Hoskins on a 1 year deal but not the end of the world as O cabrera and A rosario will be getting some possible reps at 1st as well at this point they will probably give the same offensive production. Defensively goldy still has it for the most part
Ohhhh yeah? Dmac as in D Makula?
No
Plenty left in oldy Goldy’s tank he will perform better in a right handed batting bench platoon role. Boston is already taking note of his return after he thrashed Red Sock pitching late last season. Welcome back to the Bronx Goldy!!👍
How about a trade of jasson Dominguez and jc escarra to st Louis for jo jo Romero and prospect Leonardo Bernal? Yankees can plug in a rh back up catcher for 1 year until Bernal is more seasoned. They get a solid reliever. St Louis gets Dominguez a needed outfielder and a defensive catcher? Who says no
Yankees hopefully. We need to stop thinking prosthetic are going to be their best in their first 500 AB. It’s rather sickening to hear them down on Dominguez. The entire industry was high on him not just the Yanks. Certainly all products are risky. But to me a +.250 bat avg, +.330 OBP , 10% bb rate and 10/23 hr/sb at age 23 in the bright lights of NYC isn’t a failure. In fact, I thought that asidefrom his defense he had a decent rookie showing. He’s 22 not 27. He’s had less than 100 games above AA level coming into 2025. Give him more time and that time, with injuries or a trade, could easily by 2026.
He can’t play defense, at all. Anyone thats watched him knows he will never be able to field a fly ball, no matter how much work he does. Hes a DH only player or a liability.
I was really hoping he’d end up back in Arizona. Love Goldy!
I like Goldy…glad they signed him LAST off-season as a transition player at 1b. But most people thought that transition, to Ben Rice playing 1st, was settled? Decent insurance policy, I guess, in case of injury(s) to Rice. But wouldn’t be surprised to see Goldy get the DJ LeMahieu treatment by (or before) the AS break.
Ya not like there were a few players coming from Japan to take a gamble on. Let’s just resign last year’s bench instead
So sign a Japanese player to be a backup RH on the bench???? Haha. How about we have a 26 homer kid at 1b and a gold glove 3b on a 2/$32 mil deal? OR how about Murakami had defensive liabilities at 3b and 1b and Okamato maybe, wanted to go somewhere that he’s promised full time AB. You guys act like the Yankees can have anyone they want. And really, a team with a $320 mil payroll that doesn’t have a $350 billion or $40 billion private investment firm as their piggybank is being called cheap when they’re paying 110% luxury tax on every dollar they spend? The Dame one that posted Soto $750 mil last year? Go be a fan of any other team other than the Dodgers, Jays or Mets please.
Or how about we dont sign Rosario or goldy and get the Japanese player(s) that play both positions instead. 🤔 Youre a moron
Not sure if Goldy was interested in a return to AZ, but as a Dbacks fan, do you want Santana at $2M or Goldy at $4M? Seems like the Dbacks could have gotten to $4M without breaking the bank. Maybe Goldy just preferred NY.
money while is important was probably not the biggest factor as he has made over 200M. I dont recall hearing crazy stories about him. so i could make an assumption he probably has a bunch saved up.
Not sure his family situation, but having to up and move his family again after selling everything in AZ just a couple years ago might have factored in more. I believe he is in florida which has spring training for yankees rather than az which is in az. Add in that for the most part (even with 2 florida teams) seem to be yankee country. Might be just the fit
The Stankees really are that boring, profits first franchise now. They couldn’t have made a splash in the Japanese market for a corner infielder this off-season?
Their team was boring, uninspired, and obviously lacking last year, in general. And dont give me this “best offense in baseball” nonsense. That doesnt matter in the playoffs or final stretch. Cashback running out last year’s team should get him fired.
What a joke this team has become. Coming from a long time yankees fan and goldy fan – this just is not the way. Guess it saves me time next year not watching these games (plus YES is impossible to watch). Done with this franchise
I knew I heard a tiny violin playing sad songs around here.
I agree with you to a point however I will say this
They won 94 games and it should have been more. Devin williams and Luke weaver each had meltdowns and it cost the yankees at least 5 games (I know you can say they also figured it out at times and they got out of jams) but they are gone. If Bednar and Doval pitch like they are supposed to maybe you win a few of those blown games. Cole comes back he help. Weathers helps the rotation and bullpen. They may be a team that wins 96 or so games and you can always add at the deadline! Just saying
Nothing new same result
Good signing for $4M.
A couple of big milestones that will help his hall of fame case are within reach if he hangs on for a little longer. 400 career HRs (currently at 372), and 500 career 2Bs (currently at 477). I think if he plans to play until his age 40 season he should be able to reach those.
He’s already in but maybe not first ballot.
63.8 career WAR. Peak between 2013 and 2022. One MVP, two runner-up finishes, and six top-10 MVP finishes. Four GGs. Five Silver Sluggers.
Great career, and at least a top 3 1B of his generation. Freeman and Votto being the other two.
Paul Goldschmidt is a good defensive 1B or he was and he is a good base runner, although not speedy. I don’t think any Yankee IF will be as bad as they were last season. Let’s hope Goldschmidt has his Swansong season.
Man imagine him in their lineup
A lot of running it back by Crashman this year.
Same team won 94 games last year. Just a stupid tiebreaker from having the division title and #1 seed. Really hard to improve on that, and they’re going to get key pitchers Cole and Rodon back relatively soon as well.
Rooms full of naysayers…..everybody has to play all 162 and lots can happen between now and then that will affect who rises to the top….
With Stanton missing chunks of the season annually, Goldschmidt probably sees another 400 AB.
