The Yankees and first baseman Paul Goldschmidt are finalizing a one-year contract, reports Jeff Passan of ESPN. Salary figures for the Excel Sports Management client have not yet been reported. The Yankees have a full 40-man roster and will need to make a corresponding move once this deal becomes official.
It’ll be Goldschmidt’s second season in the Bronx. The former MVP signed a $12.5MM deal last offseason to serve as New York’s everyday first baseman. The role will be different this year, as Goldschmidt seems ticketed for more of a short side platoon role after Ben Rice outplayed him last season. The left-handed hitting Rice connected on 26 homers with a .255/.337/.499 batting line across 530 trips to the plate.
Goldschmidt managed only 10 home runs in a similar amount of playing time. His .274/.328/.403 batting line was a little better than league average. It came with dramatic splits, both in terms of handedness and timeliness. Goldschmidt started his Yankee tenure on a tear, hitting .338/.394/.495 with six longballs through the end of May. That plummeted to a .226/.277/.333 performance over the final four months of the season. It was essentially an inverse of his 2024 campaign in St. Louis. Goldschmidt started that year very slowly before picking it up in the second half.
Between his late-season struggles and Rice’s breakout year, the seven-time All-Star lost playing time as the season progressed. His plate appearance tally dropped in each month. Goldschmidt will remain in the lineup against left-handed pitching, as he continued to tee off on southpaws even as his numbers against righties dropped. He’s coming off a .336/.411/.570 slash against left-handers compared to a .247/.289/.329 mark when he didn’t hold the platoon advantage. Seven of his 10 home runs came off lefties even though he saw twice as many plate appearances versus right-handers.
Rice had seven homers in 119 plate appearances against lefties last year, but it came with a .208 average and .271 on-base mark. Even if the Yankees don’t want to make him a strict platoon bat, they’ll time some of his rest days against tough southpaws. Goldschmidt can pick up those at-bats and offers a fallback at designated hitter in case Giancarlo Stanton misses time. Lefty-hitting catcher Austin Wells had reverse splits last season but is a career .218/.282/.360 hitter against southpaws. If the Yankees want to continue giving Rice scattered reps behind the plate, they could shield Wells from a lefty and start Goldschmidt at first.
At 38, Goldschmidt is clearly on the downswing of what should be a Hall of Fame career, but he can still be productive if deployed in a more limited role. He’s also highly respected off the field and was just named to the U.S. World Baseball Classic roster for the third time in his career. He clearly made a strong impression in the clubhouse and with the coaching staff. The late-season drop in playing time evidently didn’t sour him on giving it another go in pinstripes. Joel Sherman of The New York Post reports that he passed on more money from another team to remain in the Bronx.
New York has a lineup that skews to the left side generally. GM Brian Cashman and manager Aaron Boone had spoken multiple times about wanting to add a righty bat for balance. Goldschmidt joins utility infielder Amed Rosario as righty options off the bench, while José Caballero would also be in that mix if Anthony Volpe reclaims the shortstop job once he returns from shoulder surgery. They’re going to carry J.C. Escarra as a backup catcher.
That would only leave one bench spot for Oswaldo Cabrera and Jasson Domínguez if everyone gets through camp healthy. Jon Heyman of The New York Post wrote on Thursday that it seems likely Domínguez will be optioned back to Triple-A to begin the season. That seems even more likely with Goldschmidt back, though Spring Training injuries could certainly change the picture.
More to come.

Wow.
First wbc
first what?
Welcome back Cotter.
Seems kind of pointless, but it also seems unlikely to impede them from achieving anything they’d like to if it doesn’t work out.
Good lord. To be sure they could do better than that.
“Championship caliber….”
“I feel really good about our group of guys….”
“Real First place team move”
I’m sure he’ll be in a strict platoon with Rice. Guy still crushes lefties
His OPS+ against RHP vs LHP is a bigger divide than the Grand Canyon.
You hurt Paul’s feelings
Cashman hurt mine first.
If he can hit lefties, then he’ll serve a purpose. He seems to have accepted he’s now. a platoon and bench bat. You’ll also be happy he’s there for late-inning defense.
🫵😂 Yankees
Joking of course.
Over/under 50% before he’s DFA’d by June? Or sometime in the month of June
Over
Agreed. He’s not going to get a lot of playing time as Rice is earmarked for 1B.
Cash only likes guys over 35. This will eat into rice’s development and in a year from now they’ll be wondering why he had a sophomore slump…
He’s a capable bench piece who hits from the right side and can still mash lefties. He’ll help tremendously on a team that has six left-hand hitting starters. He’ll play in something like 45-50 games. Not going to break the bank. Not going to delay anyone’s development. Relax.
Long as he plays only vs LH and is less then 6 million per, it a quality signing
MRSHOWTIME:
A guy who can only play first base and only play against left-handed pitchers. Seems like kind of a waste of a roster spot to me.
He can DH too. What they really need to do is DFA Stanton.
Are you a Red Sox fan? Why would you DFA Stanton? He is still a productive and dangerous hitter.
Seamaholic:
I get that he can DH too. But anyone can DH. When you have a guy like that, he kind of clogs up the DH spot. I just don’t think it’s good construction of a roster to add a guy like that.
Seamaholic/Seamaholic 2 is actually a Mariners fan who seems to never comment on Mariners articles and likes sharing contrarian opinions to either look cool or spark discussion, which I never got why…
Why DFA Stanton ?
Well, that’s unlikely to happen. Stanton & Yankees are locked in on 500 HR. And sitting at 453, IF he can stay healthy & play in 130-140 games/season, he has a sporting chance of doing it in pinstripes under this current contract. Hell, even an outside chance of doing it this year! And, I for one, will be right there applauding him with the rest of the Yankee fans at the Stadium as the flashbulbs go off.
There’s a better chance, if he does hit 500 HRs as a Yankee, of him retiring after the 2027 season and both sides restructuring that final year of his contract.
Probably cuz he’s born in like 2009 and is still a teenager and wants to look cool. He’s gotten attention, maybe not the best one here.
Wait till you see the contract numbers.
I guess they couldn’t afford Ty France.
Yeah..
Ty France hasn’t been good sine 2022!
Ty France is the 2025 Gold Glove Winner as the very BEST defensive first baseman in the American League, Better than Rice, Better than Goldschmidt, Better than Vladdy…
FACT!!!
Who cares about the Gold Glove? You need slug at that position.
Across the board, France’s defensive metrics shot up this season. He was worth 10 Outs Above Average, which led all Major League first basemen. What a change from one year ago, when France’s -12 OAA painted him as a weak defender.
That’s right… but, you Yanks will keep with what you’ve been doing – lately – you’ll keep Stanton doing what he’s been capable of, and that “slug” that he gives you really got you what you wanted in ‘25!!!???
We all in the AL East like that you
“Trust in Cash”, and if you keep doing it, the Jays will demonstrate that both Stanton and Cash will not see the ‘27 season in pinstripes…!!!
Fact…
Projected end of season standings for 2026:
1- Jays
2- Baltimore
3- Red Sox
4- Yankees
5- Rays
Running it back!
Maybe Hicks and DJ are willing to play a few too!
BREAKING: Vernon Wells coming out of retirement.
Core Four says hold our beers.
@Yankee Clipper
Is Jeter coming out of retirement? They haven’t won since he retired.
He needs to! He would probably be the best SS on their roster at this point.
I guess? I generally think that the only way a player gets better vs same side pitching is for more game time reps. I wish two things don’t happen:
a) they create a frequent platoon situation for Rice/Goldy
b) they move Rice to C and move Wells. Even with the nullification of his farm pitching Benstar of the robots, Wells is still a better overall C than Rice and I think they should limit exposing Rice to the physical perils of catching.
They really are running it back!
I love Goldy but how is this a roster fit? Honestly Jones and Dominguez both have no spot. Oswald Cabrera is also out a spot. Just cut Stanton at this point because there is absolutely no roster space. They signed that Mexican league mvp Nick Sanchez to a minor league deal so he also has no roster spot. I don’t understand what’s going on here because Goldy can only play first and Rice is your first baseman.
It’s Nick Torres btw.
Starters:
C: Wells (LH)
1B: Rice (LH)
2B: Chisolm (LH)
3B: McMahon (LH)
SS: Caballero (RH)
LF: Bellinger (LH)
CF: Grisham (LH)
RF: Judge (RH)
DH: Stanton ( RH)
Bench: Escarra (RH), Cabrera (S), Rosario (RH), Goldsmicht (RH), Dominguez (S).
Plenty of room for everyone. Maybe they choose to go with an extra bullpen arm for stretches, so Cabrera gets optioned. So be it. Only real crunch happens when Volpe is healthy enough to return, but having too many options at that point in time will be good to have. In the short term, adding another right bat provides much needed balance, which this team very much needed!
He’s fine. He will only be in against lefties to give Wells or Rice a break; unlike last year when he played way too much
They are really running it back from last year. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Pathetic.
🙂
I don’t see how this helps. Who REALLY needs a weakside platoon, 1B only player?
The Yankees do, evidently.
World baseball classic
That absolutely makes me happy. They need that right hand batter off the bench. Plus, he’s a great defensive guru. Good re-sign
Hopefully this doesn’t mean a platoon for Rice. He needs to be given his shot at full time at bats.
The boys are back in town!
Look say what you want about Cashman, but he firmly believes in this particular roster. I give him credit for doubling down on it. Let’s see how it works out.
Personally, I like it because Goldy’s still good in spurts and continues to give Rice a mentor. That, to me, shows that the Yanks are serious about Rice being the future there.
Goldy’s also locking down a future coaching gig, no doubt.
Welcome back!
I get the logic. There was hints of a perfect alignment in their lineup and roster construction last year. They are clearly hoping to learn from their mistakes/miscalculations with each player and run it back with an improved strategy to implement each individual piece and basically perfect what they had in 2025, minus the pieces they let go of completely in DJLM, etc.
Lol
It really sucks to see him regress due to his age after 2022. He was the definition of consistent production. I hope he gets one more good year before hanging up his spikes, but it looks unlikely in New York with Ben Rice at 1st now.
He is not necessarily Ben Rice’s platoon partner; he is Wells’ platoon partner. I think Rice will catch against Lefties and Wells against righties.
He’s so old!
Well, I mean, old in baseball terms.. He’s younger than me actually.
Sigh…
@rhandome
Age is only a number.
Good move for the Yankees. We are getting 1 step closer to dealing Walker.
A true iron man, his days of putting up 30 dingers are gone, however is always well conditioned, never injured and the ultimate professional. Will come up with clutch hits in big situations. Good to have on the bench come playoffs.
A Goldschmidt return to the Yankees was probably inevitable after the D’backs brought in a Black Magic Woman…
Welcome to your 2026 RUNNING IT BACK NEW YORK YANKEES!!!
Getting the band back together. I wonder what Buck Martinez thinks?
Now they have two Schmidts. Awful beer.
Literally… No, not in the way people use the word to exaggerate a point… I mean LITERALLY ran the exact same team back.
Guy’s gonna rake!
Sigh. Well, if you were hoping for a big, bright and shiny new thing….nope. He could be useful, but I’d have preferred a younger player getting the chance.
Why? His bat speed was gone by midseason. It’s only going to get worse a year older.
Looking at the current 40=man roster, not sure who to DFA. Maybe an insignificant trade coming.
Last best chance getting into and winning a WS. Good move by both sides.
Dreams do come true!!
