Indians Shift Focus To Closer

By Tim Dierkes | December 1, 2008 at 8:43am CDT

According to Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Indians decided last week that multiyear deals for Rafael Furcal or Orlando Hudson would be too risky (health concerns).  They’re likely to switch their focus to finding a closer.

Hoynes says the Indians have talked to the agents for Brian Fuentes, Trevor Hoffman, Jason Isringhausen, and Francisco Rodriguez.  Hoynes believes the Mets have the upper hand on K-Rod.  Still, Fuentes has scheduled a trip to New York to visit with the Mets.

Reds In Trade Talks For Dye?

By Tim Dierkes | November 30, 2008 at 8:58pm CDT

SUNDAY: A small update from Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune – any deal involving the Reds and Dye is "complicated by financial matters."  Not sure why; Dye is only on the hook for $11.5MM next year.

SATURDAY: John Fay got Walt Jocketty to admit he’s talked to the White Sox (nothing is close).  Jocketty’s non-denial about the Dye rumor seems to indicate it’s accurate.

TUESDAY, 5:42pm: MLB.com’s Scott Merkin notes that the Mets and Phillies are two of the six teams on Dye’s no-trade list.  Dye’s agent, Bob Bry, has not been contacted by Ken Williams in regard to a possible trade to either club.  The Reds don’t appear to be on the list, though, so Williams would not need clearance to make a deal with them.

12:13pm: Lance McAlister of 1530 WCKY in Cincinnati has a rumor up regarding trade talks between the White Sox and Reds.

McAlister’s source says the White Sox initiated talks to send Jermaine Dye to the Reds for Homer Bailey and another player.  Ken Rosenthal says Dye’s no-trade clause mostly covers teams in the northeast.  Perhaps the Sox can trade him to the Reds without his consent.  Ken Williams and Walt Jocketty matched up in July on the Ken Griffey Jr. trade.  It’s known that Jocketty prefers trades to free agency.

Royals Sign J.R. House

By Tim Dierkes | November 29, 2008 at 10:04pm CDT

According to the Daytona Beach News-Journal, the Royals signed catcher J.R. House to a split contract.  House, 29, hit .306/.378/.480 in 454 Triple A at-bats this year.  Back in the day, House was considered the Pirates’ top prospect before he was derailed by injuries.  There was a time when Jason Kendall was expected to move to the outfield to accomodate him.

Third Team In Peavy Deal: Orioles?

By Tim Dierkes | November 29, 2008 at 6:29pm CDT

According to Jeff Zrebiec and Peter Schmuck of the Baltimore Sun, the Orioles appear to be the third team in the Jake Peavy-Cubs trade talks.  Kevin Towers told Tim Brown earlier this week he may have found the third team.

According to the Sun, one scenario could have the Cubs sending Felix Pie to Baltimore for Garrett Olson, who would become part of the Cubs’ package for Peavy.  The Orioles once targeted Pie during the Brian Roberts talks, while the Padres wanted Olson for Khalil Greene.  No deal is imminent.  The authors add that acquiring Pie would not affect the Orioles’ pursuit of Mark Teixeira, even if some current team members lose playing time.

Red Sox Acquire Littleton

By Tim Dierkes | November 28, 2008 at 4:42pm CDT

4:42pm: A press release from the Red Sox says it’s actually two players to be named later or cash considerations.  Amalie Benjamin notes that Littleton is out of options, so the return may not be impressive.

4:33pm: According to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News, the Rangers traded righty Wes Littleton to the Red Sox for a player to be named later or cash.  GM Jon Daniels said the player may not be named until close to opening day.

Littleton, 26, has a 3.69 ERA in 102.1 career innings.  He had a nice half-season out of the Rangers’ pen in ’06.

Which Type Bs Will Be Offered Arbitration?

By Tim Dierkes | November 28, 2008 at 4:30pm CDT

Teams have a chance to snag a supplemental draft pick if they offer arbitration to their Type B free agent and he signs elsewhere.  The risk is that the player could accept and leave the team with an unwanted financial burden.

Of the 33 Type B free agents, which do you think will be offered arbitration Monday?  Check the box next to those who will be offered arbitration, in your opinion.  Take the poll here, see the results here.

Odds and Ends: Sabathia, Schilling, Castaneda

By Tim Dierkes | November 28, 2008 at 3:30pm CDT

Links for Friday…

  • Anthony McCarron of the New York Daily News says $100MM contracts for pitchers are risky, given the deals signed by Kevin Brown, Barry Zito, and Mike Hampton.  Those pitchers don’t seem similar to C.C. Sabathia, however.
  • The second part of Curt Schilling’s article about his trade to the Red Sox.
  • The Royals signed several minor league free agents, including righty Federico Castaneda from the Mexican League.
  • SI.com’s Jon Heyman explains why the free agent market is slow.  It doesn’t seem abnormal to me; it makes sense to wait until after December 1st to see if arbitration is offered.

Latest On Raul Ibanez

By Tim Dierkes | November 28, 2008 at 3:21pm CDT

According to Larry LaRue of the Tacoma News Tribune, the Cubs, Mets, and Phillies talked to Raul Ibanez’s agent this week.  Those three clubs remain high on him.  LaRue says the Mariners fielded a call from Ibanez’s agent, but he’s unlikely to sign because he wants to win and does not want to be a designated hitter.

Another reason to let Ibanez leave is his Type A status.  He’s highly unlikely to accept an offer of arbitration, and the Mets, Phillies, and Cubs all have unprotected first-round picks.

Astros Slow Negotiations For Randy Wolf

By Tim Dierkes | November 28, 2008 at 3:16pm CDT

According to Brian McTaggart of the Houston Chronicle, the Astros slowed negotiations with free agent lefty Randy Wolf due to payroll concerns.  The Astros made an offer earlier this month, but now GM Ed Wade says:  "I told Arn that we still had interest but weren’t prepared to move forward at this time."

Japanese Links

By Tim Dierkes | November 28, 2008 at 2:35pm CDT

A few links today related to NPB and Japanese players…

  • East Windup Chronicle looks at 2009 projections for Japanese players coming to MLB, in posts here and here.
  • The Orioles have had "initial discussions" with three Japanese pitchers.  There seems a good chance Koji Uehara and Kenshin Kawakami are two of them.
  • The Softbank Hawks signed Kameron Loe and Justin Germano for their rotation.  Loe gets about $2MM over two years, while Germano gets about $525K over one.
