Looking forward to another of these, let's get it rolling

Despite his low EVs and 1st percentile bat speed, Jacob Wilson's elite bat-to-ball skills helped him to compete for a batting title his rookie season. But so far in 2026 his hacktastic 'swing at everything' ways have gotten him a .196/.196/.255 slash line that has not been the result of bad luck. Given what he did in 2025 and what he is doing (in a 12 game sample) in 2026, what do you see for him as a hitter moving forward?
Anthony Franco
Whiffs are up, relatively speaking, because he's really taking the 'swing at everything' approach to heart but it's a tiny sample and they're pressing up and down the lineup right now. Not worried about it and still think he's a true talent .300 hitter
13 homers again seems optimistic but 8-10 with 25 doubles is reasonable
Kevin Cash
Is my job safe beyond 2026 if I can't right the ship for a 3rd straight year?
Anthony Franco
They're the worst team in the AL East on paper and it's not like they've been disastrous over the past couple years. Unless new ownership just wants to shake things up, can't see why they wouldn't remain committed to Cash moving forward
Jordan
I'm pleasantly surprised by the Braves start and if they're able to remain in the mix until the deadline who would be some realistic targets for them to go after that Profar money?

Hey all, Steve’s on vacation this week so I’m stepping in for the Tuesday chat. Apologies for the time change from the usual afternoon schedule. We’ll get going at the top of the hour
Good morning, hope you’re all doing well!
Let’s get rolling
AL Central Casting
With all the extensions getting done around the league lately, I’d love to see the Twins lock up Luke Keaschall long-term. What do you think it would take? What about for Walker Jenkins?
Anthony Franco
Both sensible targets. I’d have Jenkins below Colt Emerson based on the higher defensive floor for Emerson as a shortstop but they’re not too dissimilar as prospects. Jenkins should be closer to Emerson’s $95M guarantee than Cooper Pratt’s $50M range
Some questions about the long-term defensive home for Keaschall but more proof of concept that he can hit MLB pitching than we had with Campbell or Samuel Basallo, even if they were better prospects pre-debut. Would guess somewhere between $60-70M on him?
Jason
I thought Boston was going to be middle of the pack this year, so I’m not completely surprised by the horrible no good very bad start, but did you think they’d be this bad so early? I know a lot can change but wowzers.
Anthony Franco
Still think they’ll be fine — no way the starting pitching remains this bad — but obviously the worst first couple weeks for any team and it’s not an easy division to climb back from if they keep spiraling through most of April
AA
Why do I get the feeling this year’s Braves team isn’t gonna be much different than the last two?
Anthony Franco
Obviously remain concerned about the rotation depth there but credit to Bryce Elder, whose first two starts have been really good. If he’s able to stick around as a league average starter and they get contributions from Ritchie and Fuentes, they’ll be better than last year
Ham
Despite a couple big adds, the Orioles offense still looks like last year’s lackluster offense. What’s going on? And when will they learn to hit an offspeed pitch?
Anthony Franco
Alonso’s better than this obviously but I think they’ve skewed too heavily toward RHH power at the expense of their OBP overall
Would still take them as a slightly better than average offense moving forward but I worry that some of the redundancy in the offensive profiles will make them pretty streaky
Redsy
If Sandy Alcantara has another excellent outing would you go all in on trying to trade for him this early if you are one of the big contenders? No way the guy stays in Miami past the deadline this year right?
Anthony Franco
Darragh wrote a Front Office post on this so he and I were discussing this yesterday. I lean towards them holding and trading him this offseason
Would be really surprised if he signs an extension — only way I could see it being plausible is if the league gets the MLBPA to break on a cap/floor system that forces Miami to almost double their payroll
But I don’t think it’s out of the question this Miami team can hang around the Wild Card picture where the final spot might be 83-85 wins and Sandy would still have immense trade value next winter
Reds fan
What are the reds doing with Marte? He is a building block guy and he hasn’t played against a right hander yet-is he just a platoon bat moving forward? I don’t understand it
Anthony Franco
Yeah I don’t get that one either. They’re not really platooning him, just kind of alternating between him and Will Benson and I’d much rather have Marte out in right field
Cardsfansince1973
There have been reports about the Cardinals trying to extend JJ Wetherholt. Any updates? Do you think they will try to extend Masyn Winn as well?
Anthony Franco
Don’t doubt that they’d love to get both of them done. Wetherholt seems likelier to me just based on the number of early-career extensions we’ve seen the past couple years
decinces
is the angels decent start (third best record in the al) just small sample size or a hope that the pitching is a little better than advertised and better depth is making the lineup deeper and able to string together some momentum, even with adell and lowe not doing anything offensively so far (though both have been phenomenal in the outfield corners so far)
Anthony Franco
I just can’t muster any kind of optimism with this roster. Much the same pattern as previous Angels teams where there are handful of impact pieces (Neto, Soriano, Trout if healthy, maybe Detmers) but the depth is going to get exposed over 162
Chris
Even off to a good start, preseason concerns about Yanks bottom of order and back end of bullpen look legit, dont they?
Anthony Franco
Lineup will be fine. Caballero’s in over his head as a starting shortstop but you can live with him or Volpe at the bottom of the order. McMahon and Wells should be close to league average bats who provide strong defensive value
Bullpen bridge to Bednar and Cruz concerns me a little more, but that’s a spot where they can again take a volume approach at the deadline (hopefully with better results than they’ve gotten from Doval and Bird so far)
Connor⚾️
Expectations for the Rangers this year?⚾️
Anthony Franco
Right around .500, clearly behind Seattle for me but there with Houston as the second and third best teams in the division in some order
The Ghost of Mickey Lolich
To the surprise of no one, except Scott Harris, the Tigers offense ‘stinks’. When will we see Max Clark called up
Anthony Franco
Ha, I still mostly like this offense on paper. Do think we could see Clark by the middle of May, though, especially if Parker Meadows isn’t hitting
SCR
Wacha , Soriano or Messick rest of 2026 ? ( K’s dont matter ) .
Anthony Franco
Soriano

Related questions: How does a lockout impact service time, and does the potential for a lockout get factored into some of the extensions we are seeing?
Anthony Franco
An offseason lockout obviously doesn’t impact service time. If it costs an entire season, that’s something they’d need to sort out within the CBA
I don’t think it’s having much of an impact on extensions. It probably plays into contract structure a little bit — players would prefer the money as signing bonuses rather than 2027 salary as a hedge — but if the ’27 season gets canceled, they’re not getting paid salaries either way
Slick Ric
If CJ Abrams keeps hitting like he is, does that make it more likely or less likely that he is in Washington after the trade deadline?
Buster Posey
Fine: I should have traded for CJ Abrams. Does Eldridge straight-up get it done or would the Nats want more?
Anthony Franco
Better performance has to drive up the likelihood of a trade. Nats still aren’t close and 2.5 years of Abrams might be the most valuable deadline trade chip
I don’t think Eldridge is getting it done as a standalone. Sensible headliner but this kind of deal is basically never one-for-one for a top prospect. Teams like to hedge their bets with multi-player packages
Circle Me Bert
Where is Byron Buxton playing after the trade deadline?
Anthony Franco
Still think he’s a Twin
Fantasy Advice
Are we concerned about Nick Kurtz’s start?
Anthony Franco
Not really. His rookie season was probably a little over his head — don’t think we’re talking about him as the third-best hitter in MLB behind Judge and Ohtani — and there will always be a lot of strikeouts but the power barrage is coming
Greg
Any tips for securing a job with MLB Trade Rumors?
Anthony Franco
When opportunities come out, we just put out a job posting on the site, nothing available right now. Best advice I could give is to read closely on a lot of the transactional minutia to have an idea of why teams make moves when they do, 40-man implications, etc.
Phils
What do you do with T walker when Zach Wheeler comes back? He won’t be in the rotation and they have absolutely no space for him in the bullpen. Is it time to just say goodbye or ask him to go to AAA?
Anthony Franco
He has no incentive to go to Triple-A. My guess is they’ll try to get Pop through waivers and keep Walker around in long relief as a hedge in case Wheeler doesn’t look right
Ryan
Why did the Brewers preemptively give Cooper Pratt a 40-man roster spot when he’s not getting called up and wasn’t Rule 5 eligible until after the 2027 season?
Anthony Franco
It’s required for any player signing a major league contract. Mariners had to do the same with Colt Emerson
Jordan Walker
Are you buying my breakout?
Anthony Franco
Cautiously optimistic. Still a lot of swing-and-miss but he’s destroying the ball and getting it in the air more than he usually does. Seems like the bat path is a little more uphill this year, which is encouraging if you can pull that off without a massive drop in contact
It’s two weeks so I’m not fully on board yet because we’ve seen stretches where Walker gets hot and then falls back, but I’m more intrigued than I was on March 27
Big Fan
Can you explain the “player to be named later” process? Is there a time limit for the player to be named? Is there a bank of players that the teams agree could be available at a later time?
Anthony Franco
Pretty much. Teams will agree to a prearranged list of players who the acquiring club can choose from a timeline for them to make that decision
To ATL
I’ve seen Tim and now you revently respond to questions about the lockout with a bit more pessimism. Is that me, or are you concerned we may actually lose part or all of next season?
Anthony Franco
Nah I think the offseason will suck but they’ll figure it out late, pretty similar to what happened the last time around
More pessimistic about 2031 but MLB has so many reasons right now (TV bundle after ’28, expansion, Manfred’s personal desire not to have his legacy be an inability to get a CBA done at the end of his tenure) not to bring it all to a halt this time
I Overslept
Calm me down about Carter Jensen. There are a lot of young guys on the Royals and it kinda bugs me that they let it slide.
Anthony Franco
They kind of put him on blast publicly, obviously scratched him from that game. I think it’s fine. Sending him down or something is an overreaction that deals more of a hit to the team than it’s worth
If it happens again, alright, maybe they do some kind of disciplinary thing like the Nationals did with CJ Abrams a couple years ago. For the first time, I think they handled it fine
The Big Q
Why is “swing and miss” simply a part of Kurtz’s game, but a detriment to Walker’s breakout?
Anthony Franco
We’ve seen Kurtz have a monster power season despite a 30% strikeout rate already
If Kurtz had hit six homers last season, I’d be a lot more worried about the whiffs
zivkov34
What’s the hold up on the Konnor Griffin extension? Or were we sold yet anotherPR lie y Bob
Anthony Franco
Probably waiting a few days to make it look better for that silly PPI rule that says he can’t earn them a pick if there’s an extension done before his MLB debut
Marlins
Do you think Liam hicks will keep hitting like this or do you think he’ll go back to being around a below average to average bat
Anthony Franco
He’s never had anything close to this kind of power but the plate discipline is good enough that I buy him as a slightly above-average hitter
I like him more than Agustín Ramírez but don’t think either has the glove to be a long-term starting catcher. Not like they’ve got anything locked down at first base, though
Blue
How do you like ABS challenges so far?
Anthony Franco
It’s been fun. Still think it’ll end up being full ABS once the novelty wears off and we get a blown call that costs a playoff game when a team is out of challenges. But I underrated how much fans would love the idea of the ABS overturning calls on the scoreboard
Guest
If Bohm scuffles will the Phillies call up Aiden Miller to replace Bohm?
Anthony Franco
He’d need to be really bad into July before I could see that as a possibility, easier to break him in as a bench bat without turning over 3B halfway through a pennant race. Miller’s also on the minor league IL right now and his return timeline isn’t clear
Buster Posey
Why not blow this whole thing up and finally play the kids? This organization never wants to rebuild so we can be mediocre and win our standard 81 games.
Giants fan
Would this Giants team be a powerhouse in the SEC?
Rich
Is there a legitimate chance the Giants are really bad? Like, worse than Colorado bad.
Anthony Franco
Three of the many Giants questions in here. Not yet moving off my prior that they’ll be in the Wild Card picture all season
Hoyer
Giolito kinda makes sense if Hortons out awhile right?
Anthony Franco
Probably but I have no idea what Giolito’s status is at this point. One of the weirder free agent trajectories I can remember

A question/comment about the MLB draft and taxes. As we all know, teams that spend big also pay big taxes and teams that don’t spend, don’t pay the lux tax. There are teams that are legitimately trying to win and others that aren’t. Then there are (not many) teams that spend and try to win with limited resources. Teams like this (best example being the Padres) are penalized by having to pay the lux tax anyway. They are also dinged by having their Q.O. players, that sign elsewhere, bring back a lower draft pick than they would normally receive. To me that seems like penalizing teams that use all their resources in an attempt to win. Bass akwards if you ask me and detrimental to the game. Any chance this gets address in the next CBA?
Anthony Franco
MLBPA would love to flip this around. The league puts this in the CBA because they don’t want teams to spend, it’s a deliberate choice
I don’t think moving a team’s top pick back 10 spots for passing the third tier is a huge disincentive. The QO stuff is, at least for mid-market players, but it’s designed to be to drive down free agent spending. Union has to give up something else to get MLB to give on this
Taylor
With Yordan Alvarez finally healthy and the offense leading the AL in batting average through the first week, is this front office in a better position to be buyers at the deadline — or does the bullpen situation (Hader on IL, thin backend depth) make them more likely to address pitching first, even if it costs them a legitimate hitting upgrade?
Anthony Franco
I’m sure they’d love to buy. Older roster, aggressive ownership (at least for certain players), a GM on the last year of his contract whose team missed the playoffs for the first time in eight seasons
Still need to find a LH bat, ideally in the outfield. They’re still there with the Angels as the most RHH lineups in MLB
Rotation depth isn’t great but is in better shape than it probably should be given where they were at the start of the offseason. Back-end bullpen could be the priority but we’ll see how Hader and Sousa recover in the interim few months
Nationals guy
Are you buying the new analytics the Nationals are giving their hitters? Looks like we could have some guys breaking out (House, Nunez, Lyle) and that’s without Crews who should be coming up fairly soon. This team looks like they can at least hit.
Anthony Franco
Nuñez is what he is, serviceable utility guy. Still don’t think House is going to make enough contact
Agree that Lile can rake and should be athletic enough to play the outfield but man, his tentativeness last year was rough
Benge
I have not been hitting at all lately. Probably time to go down to AAA to reset, or is it too early?
Anthony Franco
Give him at least until Soto comes back. If he’s still struggling at that point, I’d option him
Alright that’s all I have time for today. Working on a little tighter schedule this week unfortunately
I’m on X @affranco10 if you want to throw any other questions at me there. I do a Friday afternoon chat for Front Office subscribers where I can get to a much higher percentage of questions with more time to go in depth on the answers
Steve will be back next week, so it should be the usual Tuesday afternoon schedule on that one
April’s first edition of the Weekend Chat has been launched! We’ll take a minute to let some questions pile up, then get cooking
Sasaki
What are your thoughts so far on me
Mark P
A fine pitcher, plenty of talent, and still something of a project given his age and relative newness to the majors. Still plenty of ceiling as a starter, but if nothing else, Sasaki showed that he can certainly thrive as a MLB reliever
Orioles
Panic!?
Baseball fan
Jays season over?
Mark P
Let’s start the “the season isn’t even two weeks old” cautionary reminders right now. For Jays fans in particular, don’t forget that the team was middling at best for two full months in 2025 before things started clicking.
Ang T
Who gets the callup if the Mets have to place Polanco on the IL? I’m guessing Vidal Brujan.
Mister Met
With early struggles, is there a chance Benge gets demoted to AAA? It’s not like he tore it up there last year and seems to be overmatched (announcer stated swing looks longer and rigid I believe). If yes, what do you do with Soto hurt and unavailable as well?
Mark P
These situations go hand in hand. If Soto and Polanco both have to hit the IL, Benge isn’t going anywhere since the Mets need the lineup help. New York has two open spots on the 40-man roster so Brujan’s contract could be selected without much fuss, but the Mets might prefer Ronny Mauricio since he has an option remaining (and is obviously already on the 40-man).
In Polanco’s case, giving him a 10-day IL trip to rest up seems like an ideal situation, as having him just at DH is creating some lineup clogging
Money
It’s early in the season, any idea what Minnesota needs to improve on to make this season a success?
Mark P
Snarky answer is “a time machine,” since I think the Twins are in for a rough season. Taj Bradley has looked sharp so far and Josh Bell is on one of his heaters, but that’s more or less it in terms of hot starts. The unfortunate truth is that there’s no single aspect of the team that’s holding the Twins back — it’s every aspect at once
Thoughts on challenge system
Most fans seem to enjoy the extra layer of strategy, how about you? Do you think we’ll see it expand to 3-5 challenges a game? Players given more than 2 seconds to decide if they want to challenge?
Mark P
I’m a big fan of the challenge system and how smoothly it’s become part of baseball lore. Dunno if any tweaks need to be incorporated just yet. If anything, I can see it maybe eventually bumped up to three challenges a game, though five seems like too many
No kidding….no good way to get hit on the hand by a Major League pitch. One can only hope he’s okay and Trout has avoided another serious injury
Pirates
How long can the pirates maintain this short term success?
Mark P
I was in “I’ll need to see it to believe it” mode before predicting Pittsburgh for a playoff spot. In part this was due to my own reservations about their roster, and also my belief that they’re still behind at least the Brewers and Cubs in the NL Central, with the Reds possibly also in the mix.
But, the Pirates certainly look like an improved team. The rotation has performed well, and new guys Lowe and O’Hearn have been on fire. So far so good in the early going
Walter
Guardians under the radar again?
Mark P
They should continue to be in the mix for a wild card berth again, since the Guards often seem to just figure it out and find a way. It’s comforting that they’re winning even with Ramirez off to a slow start.
Griffin
Assuming the reporting about Griffin’s extension being basically done is true, is there any reason they’d delay announcing it? Does this mean they’re probably still negotiating?
Mark P
Since this looks to be the largest contract of its kind (i.e. for a player just entering the big leagues), no surprise that it’ll take a bit to cross the t’s and dot the lowercase j’s.
Also, don’t forget that it’s a holiday weekend, so that may be a factor in whatever delay is involved
squinky
I feel for the umps. I’ve seen a bunch of overturned abs calls by half an inch!
Mark P
Plenty of 50-50 calls, no doubt, where you can’t blame the ump for making the call (or blame a player to making the challenge)
Lt Data
Were you surprised the Yankees didn’t add to their bullpen this winter? Obviously their record so far is strong, but things have been shaky in the late innings, as could’ve been foreseen. Could’ve used a Diaz-type arm there.
Mark P
The Yankees feel they bolstered the back end of the pen enough at the deadline, hence the lack of real activity on that front last offseason
John
The orioles fumbled the entire Coby Mayo situation in my books. Either trade him, or play him. I’ve been in the trade him party for a long time now. Is his value sunk? Playing every other game doesn’t help. They’ve done that with Kjerstad as well. Would they sell low on Mayov
Mark P
Others have written this before, but the Orioles rebuilding “too quickly” led to a big of a developmental logjam. Suddenly the team had too many (in a loose way) good infield prospects and not enough room to play everyone on the MLB roster. One can argue that bringing these guys up to replace bench players raises the talent floor in theory, but the O’s also want their up-and-comers playing regularly, not getting into only a couple of games a week.
Mayo is all of 24 years old, so I’m not willing the close the door on him (or Kjerstad) as legitimate big leaguers in the future. Mayo isn’t doing much with the opportunity afforded him by these injuries, however, and the fact that the Orioles went out and signed Alonso to lock down first base is perhaps telling
Mayo still has some legit trade value, as I’ll guess plenty of teams see him as a change-of-scenery candidate.

If you could go back to 1 moment in MLB history what would it be?
Mark P
Bartolo Colon’s home run

With Hunter Brown getting hurt, did the Astros now move Parades for a starter?
Mark P
Such a trade would be tricky to pull off this early in the season, since it’s not like there’s a long list of teams willing and able to trade viable starting pitchers.

How do you feel about the Red’s starting pitching?
Mark P
They’ve been able to hold their own with Greene and Lodolo out, but obviously Cincy needs those two back to really kick into gear
Brewerdrunk
What are the odds the brewers get Made signed to a long term deal?
Mark P
He has barely played any Double-A ball, so I’d pump the brakes on any extension until next spring at the earliest. Given what we’ve seen with Chourio’s deal and the aggressive Cooper Pratt extension, it’s fair to guess Milwaukee definitely has an eye to locking Made up as well.
Another wrinkle in a Made extension….the lockout. Even if it’s a 2021-22 situation and the regular season still lasts 162 games, the spring will be compressed enough that the Brewers front office may have other things to deal with before really focusing on a contract for Made
Al Kaline Battery
What can MLB do to reduce pitching injuries? It seems like every week someone else is blowing out their arm. Injuries are a part of all sports but this is becoming an epidemic
Mark P
There’s no easy answer. Higher velocity leads to more injuries, but pitchers aren’t going to voluntarily shed velo since that makes them either less effective, or less likely to get signed in the first place.
Pitching a baseball is an unnatural physical act, and it’s inevitably going to lead to injuries. The modern focus on velocity and spin isn’t entirely to blame either, as if anything, modern medicine has helped pitchers stay healthier overall.
Philly A’s
A’s pitching is horrible. At least their bats are starting to come alive, and then silent, then alive….
Mark P
Get ready for a whole lot of Sacramento slugfests this year
White Socks
I’m interested in Sam Antonacci. I’ve been following him in AAA, and I like the way he plays the game–high contact, maybe even a little power?–do you think he could get called up?
Mark P
Antonacci has basically done nothing but hit since he was drafted in 2024, and he’s off to a great start in the small sample size of the 2026 Triple-A season. If he keeps posting anything close to these numbers, the White Sox may have no choice but to give him a look in the Show
Ross Atkins
What is your take on the Patrick Corbin signing? Seem like Giolito is persona non grata
Mark P
The Blue Jays wanted a guy to eat innings in the short term, and maybe someone who can transitioned to the bullpen once (or if??) the rotation finally gets healthy. Corbin being left-handed is particularly intriguing, given the Jays’ big need for southpaw help in the pen
Boston
How do they fix this roster? Yoshida blocking Either Anthony, Rafaela, Abreu and Duran Isn’t ideal. Playing one of Anthony Rafaela Abreu and Duran at DH hurts their future earning power. Is playing Rafaela at 2nd, Mayer at SS and finding takers or moving on from Yoshida and Story realistic options?
Mark P
Earning power isn’t really a concern for the team in general, and especially not with Rafaela or Anthony since they’re already signed to long-term extensions.
Yoshida is so clearly not in Boston’s plans that just releasing him this past winter might’ve just been the move, if for no other reason to cut the cord. It’s not fun eating his remaining money, but it’s hard to see a scenario where Yoshida can be dealt for any significant savings at all.
Adam
Do players who accept a QO have the same trade restrictions as free agent signings?
Mark P
Yes, I think mid-June is the first date when QO accepting players can be dealt
The players can still be dealt if they approve a trade before that, but accepting a QO gives them six months of no-trade protection
Brewer Fan
It’s 2 starts i know I know.. but how long until we can victory lap Kyle Harrison? Kids a beast
Mark P
Who could’ve predicted that the Brewers would fix a once-promising pitching prospect?!
….wait, I think everyone called that

Most fun things you’ve seen so far in this early part of the season?
Mark P
Hard to top Jo Adell’s three-robbery game. Even if Adell wasn’t the unofficial avatar of the Weekend Chat, that kind of a special game stands out for a long time.
Mehts
What do teams gain by signing unproven prospects to long-term contracts?
Armchair GM
I really don’t understand the motivation for signing Colt Emerson long-term. If he outperforms the contract, it’s likely they modify the terms, if he underwhelms then they’ve wasted almost a decade of money. He’s supposed to be a sure thing in the sport, but so was Scott Kingery for the Phils and I say there is no such thing as a sure thing in baseball.
Mark P
It’s a risk on Seattle’s part, but in calculated fashion. Players like Kingery, Evan White, Jon Singleton, etc. are cautionary tales for sure, but on the flip side, look at Acuna, or Corbin Carroll, or even slightly lesser big-money deals like Brandon Lowe with the Rays. If the player lives up to expectations it’s a huge bargain for the team.
Tim_in_MN
I have a suggestion for revamping the MLB 162 game regular season. I’ll use the Cubs as an example, though the same formula would apply to all teams. The Cubs would play each of their four divisional foes 18 times (72 games total). They’d play six games against each NL East team (30 games) and six against each NL West team (30 games). The final 30 games would be played against an AL division on a rotating basis; the AL East one year, AL Central the next, and then the AL West. Advantages to such a schedule? All teams within a division would play the same schedule. More games within a division amplifies rivalries and reduces travel time & costs. Because any given AL team would only come to town every 3rd year, interleague play would again be special. In most years the two World Series opponents would not have faced each other during the regular season. This would add intrigue to the Fall Classic – just like the “old days”. I’ll hang up and listen to your response.
Mark P
This is pretty close to just the old style of interleague schedule format, and frankly I prefer the current version. Getting a chance to see every team in baseball come to town every year is a plus, and if there’s already interleague play happening, I don’t see why it has to be “made special” by limiting trips to every three years.
I’m also all for fewer games against division foes. Teams and players are as well, since there was grumbling in the old format that it made things unfair for the wild card race. 13 games is plenty for rivalries, and the odd number is fun for deciding tiebreakers
DocGreedo

I suspect he gets in. Perez’s statistical shortcomings may be overlooked in favor of his long career and association with a single franchise.

Early success is good, but do you see my Fishes making noise?
Mark P
They need Stowers back as soon as possible, but so far, so good for Miami. The Marlins already topped expectations by so much in 2025 that they’re tough to evaluate this year — for all we know, maybe they can make another jump to be legit contenders for a playoff spot
LA4LIFE
Overreaction or valid: Andy Pages pushes a .290 AVG and 30 home runs by the end of the season, earning himself an extension by the end of the year
Mark P
Fabian Ardaya wrote last week that the Dodger hadn’t yet had any extension talks with Pages, which isn’t that surprising since he’s already controlled through 2030.
LA has so many promising outfielders in the pipeline that it’s possible they won’t extend Pages simply because the team wants to see how things play out with all the prospects. The Dodgers also have the money to sign Pages to a long-term deal at a later date during his arb years — it may cost them more cash down the road, but that’s no concern for this franchise

Based on your answer, do you agree with me that Harrison has more upside than Durbin? Add how Harriosn has played and that feels like a steal right now. (Again, granted it’s early)
Mark P
In terms of pure upside, yeah, Harrison was preferable. That’s not to undermine Durbin’s solid rookie year, or to discount the possibility that Harrison might have only unlocked something with the Brewers specifically given their pitching development magic. (And, as you noted, it’s early enough that this answer could totally change if Harrison is rocked in his next outing.)
The Cooper Pratt extension also lends more info to the Durbin trade. If the Brewers were obviously so high on Pratt that they saw him as a long-term piece, it explains why they were willing to move Durbin already
AA
My scabbed together pitching staff is looking good! Maybe I should of got a bat lol
Mark P
The rotation’s issue was health, not a lack of talent. If Sale/Lopez/Holmes can stay off the IL, they should deliver quality results. Atlanta’s backup pitchers (Elder and Perez) have also performed well, so there’s some hope the Braves may be able to ride out these pitching injuries
Halo CF
Not again Mark what do xrays show?
Mark P
Royals announced x-rays were negative. Trout may end up on the IL as a precaution, but it looks like the worst was avoided
Jh
does travis bazzana (currently hitting .200 in triple A) get buried among the other high profile 1st round picks of 2024 who are already making waves in mlb (konnor griffin, nick kurtz, jj wetherholt) or do you still think there is hope that cleveland doesnt regret their first overall choice?
Mark P
Keep in mind that the 2024 draft was less than two years ago. Teams are becoming more aggressive in promoting their top prospects (particularly those who are coming from college ball) to the big leagues, but just a few years, it would’ve been unheard of to even think about the Guardians promoting Bazzana to the majors this fast.
His slow start over like five games also ignores the solid numbers Bazzana posted in the larger sample of 120 PA of Triple-A ball in 2025.
Far too early to say the Guards make a mistake based on the lack of track record for any of these guys, really. For all we know, maybe Kurtz has a sophomore slump in store for 2026
Vin
Masters picks?
Mark P
Hard to pick against Scottie Scheffler
Kurtz
True or false: I am a league average bat if you take me out of Sacramento and its park effects. Put me in T-Mobile or Petco and I don’t think I’d be near as good.
Mark P
Kurtz is surely helped by playing at SHP, but he also had a .967 OPS in away games in 2025. The guy can hit anywhere.
Reds Nation
Do the Reds have a closer problem with Pagan? He averaged 1 HR every 5 innings last year which is unacceptable for a closer in my opinion. Your thoughts?
Mark P
Pagan’s struggles in keeping the ball in the park have been the story of his career, though the rest of his arsenal is good enough that he has been able to avoid damage some seasons (like in 2025).
It’s always going to be a highwire act to some extent if Pagan is your closer. But, the Reds felt solid enough in his 2025 performance to sign him to another contract and roll the dice again. Time will tell if that was the right call, or if they’ll explore a closer change at some point this year
Rob
What is going on with the San Diego team sale
Mark P
As of the most recent reports, four groups are bidding, and something could develop before April is over
I haven’t heard back from the Padres about my offer of $100 and a signed photo for the team. Starting to think I’m out of the running, but I may be willing to up my bid to $110 bucks
Guest
Umm, Mark. The Guardians won their division last year. The Tigers were the wildcard. In fact, the Guards have won their division last AL Central 3 of the last 4 seasons. They’re not hunting a wildcard playoff spot.
Mark P
This is a very fair point to make. While I think Detroit wins the division this year, one can’t rule out Cleveland from topping the ALC again.
Ludwig’s Pop Fly
After 1+ week, what concerns you most about Atlanta’s offense?
Mark P
Acuna, Harris, and Riley are off to cold starts. Small sample size, sure, though in the case of Harris/Riley case, there’s extra concern given how their numbers have been on the slide for a couple of years now.
By and large, however, the Braves’ offense is looking good even with some prominent names in early slumps
White Sox Rookie
Is the White Sox rookie first baseman eligible to win rookie of the year? Should MLB make a special category for international rookies?
Mark P
Murakami is indeed eligible. Creating a whole new award seems like a reach, but ruling such players from NPB, the KBO, etc. ineligible also doesn’t exactly fair — they’re rookies in MLB, after all.
It’s an interesting debate point, and the other wrinkle is how the ROY voting impacts Prospect Promotion Incentive players.
Angels Fan
Besides the obvious answer of Arte… Why haven’t the Angels extended Neto? At this point, would a 7/160 even be enough?
Mark P
If you’re Neto, would you necessarily want to sign a long-term extension with the Angels? An extension secures your financial future, but with $4.15MM in salary this year, three more arb years coming as a Super Two player, and $3.35MM already banked from your draft signing bonus, maybe Neto is willing to just bet on himself until free agency
Robbie Baseball
I know it’s only 9 games into the season, but I’m worried about the Blue Jays – especially based on the teams they’ve played so far. They were something like 2 for 20 this weekend with runners in scoring position. What can they do to turn things around?
Mark P
It’s not great when a slow start coincides with my worries about a team — i.e. that the Jays had no lefty bullpen depth, and they were relying a lot of hitters replicating their 2025 breakouts.
When you have mulitple players who are completely ice cold (Barger, Varsho, Springer, Kirk), it’s hard to score runs or string any kind of rally together. Not pressing the panic button after nine games or anything, but losing four in a row during this allegedly soft part of the schedule isn’t good.
James
Do you see the Braves making any significant trades at the deadline?
Mark P
Anthopoulos is never one to sit out a deadline. Any exact needs are tough to forecast right now, since so much will depend on how many of Atlanta’s starters are healthy by that point. But, bullpen reinforcement is always a need, or an extra outfielder.
Guest
Is Cole Young legit?
Mark P
Highly regarded prospect, former first rounder…nobody should be surprised if Young has a breakout year
Andrew McCutchen
What do you think about the Pirates not re-signing me now? I’m off to a hot start and Ozuna is completely washed up with no bat speed at all.
Mark P
It was handled in a very awkward manner, but I don’t hate the Pirates’ decision to move on from McCutchen as a pure baseball move. What didn’t make sense was then spending $12MM on Ozuna to clog up the DH spot.
The idea of Cutch going on a revenge tour and having a big season in Texas would be fun (especially for Rangers fans)
Lower Case j’s
Excellent Wayne’s World 2 reference!
Mark P
Haha, someone got my middle-aged reference! Hooray!

Brewer Fan
Is it weird that the Brewers haven't actually announced the Pratt extension? And on that topic, if it does get done, it wouldn't rule out a Made or Pena extension right?
Anthony Franco
It's a little atypical but I don't think any cause for concern. Adam McCalvy hypothesized yesterday that it's just a logistical holdup on completing the physical
Which would make sense. He played for Nashville through March 29, the extension report came out on the 30th, and he hasn't played any of their past three games despite being on the active roster. Could just be a travel thing to get him to Milwaukee and get final sign-off on the medical
thebeatlesshow
Anthony, Thanks again. Is the complete game no hitter on the way to being extinct (if it isn't already)?
Anthony Franco
I don't think so. Less common, yes, largely because teams are more concerned about pitch counts and there's a decent chance you're running a pretty high number in a no-hitter because it's probably coming with some strikeouts
But it's still a hell of an accomplishment for a pitcher and managers care about that
Whoops, just realized I didn't answer the second part of that first Brewers question:
Don't see why Pratt would take a Made or Pena extension off the table, no
Cubbies
What are the Cubs gonna do with their OF after this season? Happ and Seiya both FAs and Cassie was traded for Cabrera.
Anthony Franco
QO to both, ideal if one of them accepts and takes that decision off the table. Feels like Happ is the likelier of the two to return if they're signing one to a three-year deal
If they believe in Kevin Alcántara at all, have to give him a real opportunity next year. He'll be out of options and the strikeout questions aren't getting answered if he's only playing twice a week
Little Texas
I’m my way to the Rangers home opener to see Gore pitch, Here’s to his CY Young season.
Anthony Franco
Enjoy!

Thoughts on the Pratt extension?
Steve Adams
We talked about this at length and all the other recent extensions on the episode of the podcast we recorded this morning. That’ll drop tomorrow, so check that out in the morning. In general, I’m surprised for a few reasons. Pratt seems to have a lower ceiling than some of their other infield prospects, and the Brewers in general are deep there. Beyond Pratt, there’s Jett Williams, Jesus Made, Luis Pena, Andrew Fischer. Turang is controlled four more years (though I’m sure they’ll trade him at some point closer to free agency)
Pratt is also more glove-and-speed oriented, which isn’t going to pay as well in arbitration. And he’s repped by Scott Boras, which is a different brand of surprising.
I don’t think it’s some catastrophically bad deal or anything, but I question why there was such urgency to get Pratt in particular signed. Maybe he’s just the only one of their young infield guys who was amenable to signing in a price range deemed acceptable by ownership
Mr.Plow
Do you like the new ABS system?
Steve Adams
I’ve really enjoyed the rollout. I love the crowds getting into it. And broadly, I just love not having to roll my eyes or groan at as many missed calls.
I think maybe going to three challenges would be would be preferable for me, but I also understand being wary of creating a system where teams are challenging too frequently.
Guest
Two eligible players available. Jake Burger and Sal Stewart which is the better pickup
Steve Adams
For fantasy? Stewart all day, every day. Not close.
I mean, it’s one start for both, unless you’re including spring training. But Leiter was my AL ROY pick last year, and while he didn’t get there obviously, I thought he had a pretty encouraging season overall. He’s continued that into 2026.If you’ve followed any prior chats, I’m very bullish on Gore in general. So I don’t really care much about his one start with Texas so far, but I think he has ace-caliber stuff and spent about half of last season pitching like a true No. 1. I’d prefer Gore between the two, but I think both will have strong seasons in the middle of a good Texas rotation.
Bailey Ober
Do they need to stick a fork in me?
Steve Adams
Average fastball being sub-90 doesn’t feel good, especially after the hip injury last year really dogged him. I was optimistic for a rebound, since Ober really has only had that one truly awful stretch last June, but when the Twins beat was tracking the number of pitches that cracked 89 mph during spring training, my optimism waned.
Red Sux
Pretty much every new addition to the Red Sox had an atrocious weekend, which one should we be most worried about?
Steve Adams
None of them? It’s four games.
Nick
Any idea when AJ Switch Shawver may be ready to return?
Steve Adams
He didn’t have surgery until mid-June last year. I would be surprised if he returned before the trade deadline.Mid to late August seems like a reasonable target.
Gregg
The Nats are looking good with a good bullpen and some breakout stars like Joey Wiemer and Daylen Lile, making them have their great 3-1 start. Do you think that the Nats could have a sneaky good season?
Steve Adams
I don’t. The pitching depth and quality are poor. Lile can hit but is a surprisingly poor defender. The lineup has far too many holes. Good for Wiemer for his hot start to the season, but we’re talking 13 plate appearances. We have 38x as many from the preceding few seasons telling us this isn’t going to hold. He can hit lefties though!
Sad White Sox Fan
What’s going on with Korey Lee? Had a great spring, yet the White Sox DFA’d him and picked up Reese McGuire instead
Steve Adams
He’s 27, has never hit much, was out of minor league options and doesn’t grade well in terms of blocking balls in the dirt or framing. He always looked like a long shot to stick around, 47 solid spring plate appearances notwithstanding. McGuire has a comparable or better track record at the plate and plays better defense.I doubt another club is going to claim Lee and plug him right onto its 40-man roster, so he might stay in the org via outright anyhow.
Don Zimmer
What team is the odds-on early favorite to trade for Matt Shaw at the deadline?
Steve Adams
I don’t think it’s really a foregone conclusion — at least not this summer. He’s going to play five or six positions, with all four infield spots and the outfield corners probably in play. People are going to get hurt. He’ll get his ABs.Long-term, I think a trade makes perfectly good sense, but since quality depth is going to be hard to come by following the deadline, I’d assume the Cubs just hang onto him for the utility role this year.

How come no one ever asks your picks for Manager of the Year?
Steve Adams
“Manager of the Year” is basically just the award that goes to the manager of whichever playoff team is the biggest surprise, haha. Actually quantifying what makes a manager good or bad is impossible, since 90% of that happens behind closed doors in the clubhouse.
Yankeespitching
Will Konnor be up by Memorial Day?
Steve Adams
I still think there’s a decent chance he’s up before April 9, since he could still get a full year of service then and still be PPI eligible for the next few seasons.
Moreno
How can the Angels continuously be so bad? They have learned nothing over the 10 year pitfall
Steve Adams
They have an owner who has no interest in rebuilding and no interest in winning. Kind of impressive, really. They seem to prioritize drafting fast-moving players over higher-ceiling but longer-term development projects. Not sure if that’s because their player development system hasn’t been productive and they’d thus rather take products who are closer to finished, or because Moreno is impatient, or because they feel the need to plug gaps on the roster (which are borne out of poor/infrequent spending and those player development failures)
There are self-fulfilling prophecy vibes there; but Arte Moreno has been the constant throughout it all.
It’s early
Yea, but how come NO ONE ever asks your picks? And while we’re there, what are they?
Steve Adams
I have given zero thought to manager of the year, haha. I don’t know. Terry Francona and Craig Albernaz. Sure?
Mike
When will Emerson be called up? Today, tomorrow, end of the month?
Steve Adams
I’m surprised it’s not immediate, but seems like they wanted to get the deal done but plan to let him keep getting regular reps in AAA for the time being. can’t really remember an instance of signing someone long-term and then just saying “Ok, now back to AAA with you,” but I get it. Emerson is 20 and had all of six games in Triple-A to his credit prior to the current season
I don’t think the Mariners even know that answer; probably depends on health for the rest of the roster. But now that Emerson will go on the 40-man, I’m sure there’ll be no hesitation to bring him up if a need arises.
Bozz
if the Astros and Braves are seeking a lefty outfielder-they should-would they take Reynolds from the Pirates or is his contract too big?
Steve Adams
No one’s taking on the entirety of that contract. Pirates are trying to win right now anyway, and since they’d get no return, dumping one of their better bats wouldn’t be prudent anyhow.
Doghouse Riley
Was the Matos DFA any kind of surprise? He’s only 24. Should the Giants not have started his clock so soon?. Thanks Steve,
Steve Adams
I wasn’t surprised by it, but I’ve been out on Matos and Luciano for awhile now. Frustrating outcome for Giants fans on that last wave of long-term hopefuls (Matos, Luciano, Harrison, Whisnhunt, etc. — at least they kind of got Devers out of Harrison? …Kind of.)
Braves fan
Can you explain the option system?
Steve Adams
As soon as a player is added to his team’s 40-man roster, they get three option years over him. Players can be optioned to the minors at any point. Being optioned and staying down for 20 days burns an option year.A player who is optioned cannot be recalled for at least 10 days unless he is directly replacing an injured player.
Players can be optioned five times within a given season/option year (which is new to the most recent CBA; there was previously no cap). But being optioned multiple times in a season only burns one option year.
Jay
Who are some of the big names you think will be traded at the deadline?
Steve Adams
Joe Ryan. Perhaps CJ Abrams. Sandy Alcantara maybe. Drew Rasmussen, I could see. Nick Pivetta? Luis Arraez? Just trying to think of some “names” with a decent chance to go
Jennifer Kalloy
When Travis Bazzana gets called up, who plays SS for the Guardians?
Steve Adams
Whichever of Rocchio/Arias is healthier and producing more. I doubt they have a set plan right now, and I cannot believe they entered the season without making an infield addition.
Matty Arnold
Sproat got railed his first appearance with us. What do you see the rotation looking like in September? 1. Woodruff 2. Priester 3. Harrison 4. Henderson 5. Patrick? Or some other young guys going to break thru?
Steve Adams
Sproat getting hit hard in one start doesn’t really mean anything; the September rotation will come down to health. Nothing’s set beyond Woodruff and Misiorowski. If you’re asking who I think their next-best options are, then I’d say Priester and probably Henderson, with Harrison/Patrick/Sproat/Gasser all vying for innings. But the Brewers are going to have 8+ guys make ten or more starts this season, and the performance/development of everyone beyond Woody/Miz will dictate who’s getting those crucial September innings.
LouBrock’sBride
Who has the most stolen bases in 2026?
Steve Adams
Chandler Simpson?
John
Chances Harper gets traded if the Phillies aren’t in the hunt?
Steve Adams
Nope
The Big Q
What do you mean kind of? I’d say the Giants objectively got Devers out of Harrison
Steve Adams
They first and foremost got Devers out of being willing to take on all of Devers’ contract.
Cards
Gorman a potential trade candidate if he’s hitting at the deadline?
Steve Adams
I’d imagine so, but at this point I have doubts that Gorman will ever really hit. He’s never posted even a 70% contact rate in the majors. League average is around 77%. There’s just so much chase and swing-and-miss in his offensive approach.
J. JUNG FUNK?
I was counting on a big rebound for Josh Jung in fantasy but was my optimism unfounded? Does he get a long leash or no?
Steve Adams
Said at last year’s deadline and throughout the winter, but Josh Jung feels like a change-of-scenery candidate to me. The Rangers have clearly been frustrated with his inability to refine his approach — Chris Young practically said as much last summer — and the results aren’t really improving.I don’t think Jung is immune from being optioned, and I could see a rebuilding or budget-conscious club taking a look this summer.
His leash probably got longer when Sebastian Walcott was injured, but Jung doesn’t feel like a long-term piece there anymore — at least from my vantage point.
Minor/Major
Why extend Emmerson now? Shouldn’t they have waited to see if he could hit in the bigs? Lots of guys tear the cover off the ball in the minors, but can’t hit for beans in the majors. Why chance being stuck with someone like that?
Steve Adams
Because if he comes up and hits for even a couple months, the price tag could more than double. Julio Rodriguez signed for $210MM guaranteed before he finished his rookie season.Teams are increasingly confident in their ability to be correct with high-profile, MLB-ready bats. Emerson is generally regarded as one of the 10 to 15 best prospects in the sport.
Besides, how much riskier is it to give a 20-year-old an eight-year deal at $95MM than to sign 29-year-old first baseman for that same guarantee over a shorter term?
Josh Naylor has shown that he can hit in the majors, but aging curves are real and tell us anyone could begin dropping off in their 30s.
I think the Emerson deal strikes people as riskiER, but it’s really just a different type of risk. The Mariners probably project him to be worth more than double the $95MM.
The ghost of Joe Charboneau
Is Sal Stewart for real?
Steve Adams
I mean, no one is a “for real” .700 hitter, but yeah, Stewart can hit. He’s hit at pretty much every level, including with the Reds in his late call-up last season.
Guest
Braves would probably be better served by taking on Masataka Yoshida’s contract since they have the room (this year thanks to Profar and next year) while the Red Sox tack on some of their pitching to facilitate the deal. (Seen this floated around with names included one/couple of Crawford, Sandoval, Bennett, and Tolle, as examples.) Obviously attaching assets to contract dumps are easier said than done, but the Red Sox have already done it before, and the Braves could use the pitching.
Steve Adams
If the Braves had the money to take on Yoshida’s contract, I assume they’d have just signed Giolito by now (or that they would’ve signed Littell before he went to D.C.)
Also, there’s no way anyone is taking on that entire Yoshida contract, and there’s no way the Sox are dumping Tolle to shed a bad contract.
Sandoval would make some sense, but he’s still on the IL and, again, the Braves sure aren’t acting like a team with a ton of cash to spend, even after the Profar suspension.
Brewers Fan
Would you rather give Pratt $50 million or Emerson $95? Which fanbase should feel better about the deal their team gave out?
Steve Adams
Emerson
Gukas Liolito
Speaking of Giolito, are teams hesitant to make a move for him? I’m surprised he hasn’t signed anywhere yet
Steve Adams
I’ve given up trying to understand why he’s unsigned. His camp has been tight-lipped on whatever’s going on. I find it hard to believe some team wouldn’t have offered him like $10-14MM late in the offseason, but who knows? It’s a weird situation.
Guest
poor Giants fans forget they also put James Tibbs III in the Devers deal. Giants basically got hosed in this deal, Posey was a helluva player. GM? Not so much better than average.
Steve Adams
The Red Sox then turned and immediately traded Tibbs to get a couple months of Dustin May. I know he had a big spring and is out to a strong minor league start, but it’s pretty fair to say multiple teams soured on Tibbs real quickly. We’ll see whether he’s another Dodger gem or if this is just some early noise. Given how much he struck out this spring, I’m not all that optimistic.
Mike Elias
Who can I realistically hope to extend next?
Steve Adams
Dylan Beavers? I think the ship has generally sailed on Henderson, Rutschman, Bradish, Rogers, etc. Westburg is hurt, potentially done for the year. I guess Jackson Holliday, but I don’t know that a Boras-repped former No. 1 pick who’ll be a 26-year-old free agent is signing when his stock isn’t at its peak, so I’d lean against that, too.
Jake
Which pitcher should the Royals sign long term; Ragins or Bubic? Both have had injury issues, but Bubic is more consistent and Ragins struggles to get past 5 innings; I vote Bubic.
Steve Adams
Bubic is six months from free agency and probably feels an extension would be selling himself short after last season’s injury. Also, Ragans averaged 5 2/3 innings pitched per start over the past two seasons, which is pretty solid by today’s standards.
All depends on price, of course, but in a vacuum I’d take Ragans for the next five or so years
Seth Hernandez
If I’m “lights out” and the pirates are relevant, could I get the call?
Steve Adams
He’s 19 and hasn’t even pitched a minor league game yet. I’d be shocked if Hernandez was a consideration this year.
Wayward
How does Emersons extension potentially impact a Griffin deal?
Steve Adams
I don’t really think it does. Griffin’s the better prospect and was already reported to be discussing a larger deal than the one Emerson signed.
South Side
Has the ship sailed on Lenyn Sosa as a regular?
Steve Adams
I was unaware this ship was ever a thing. I don’t think anyone with a 3% walk rate has much hope of being a regular.
No Cruz Control
Cruz is a worse fielder in CF. I say move him back to SS and play Mangum in CF everyday. Better yet: get KG in Pitt for the home opener and DH Cruz!!!
Steve Adams
Can’t really DH Cruz when they paid Ozuna $12MM, but I agree that CF feels untenable. Could move Cruz to a corner, with Mangum in CF, but then you’ve got to figure out how to work in both O’Hearn and Reynolds, neither of whom should even sniff center field.Cruz is one of the most tantaliziing sets of tools I’ve ever seen, but the lack of a defensive home, coupled with the Pirates having to bring in a bunch of guys with minimal defensive value to fill out their offense, makes it tough to figure out what to do with him this season.

Good afternoon!
Let's begin
MarinersMan
What areas will the Mariners target at the trade deadline, assuming they're performing like people expect them to? SP? RP? Bench depth?
Steve Adams
Every contending club is in the mix for bullpen help. Seattle's bullpen core -- Munoz, Brash, Speier, Ferrer and to a lesser extent Bazardo -- is great, but they'll still be looking to deepen things. And if either Ferrer or Speier gets hurt, I'm sure they'll specifically target a lefty.I could see a corner OF/DH bat being on the list, as Canzone hasn't hit over a particularly large sample yet and a Raley/Robles platoon isn't exactly a lock to produce.
Rotation depth behind the top guys isn't great, so I can see a starter on the list if they have some health issues -- though they've obviously been pretty good at keeping Gilbert/Woo/Castillo/Kirby healthy (or at least clear of major season-ending issues)
Broadly, the Mariners don't have a ton of holes though. Which is why they were I think universally picked by our staff to win the West.

When do you see the Pirates calling up Konnor Griffin?
Mark P
Assuming he’s raking at Triple-A, probably around the first week or two of May?
As much as one has to factor in finances when discussing the Pirates, from a pure baseball perspective, I agree with the decision to keep Griffin in the minors. He hasn’t played much Triple-A ball, and his work in Spring Training still showed some holes in his game
Squints
As a Brewer and White Sox fan, it was an interesting weekend. My question is do the Sox have any pitching to at least flirt with 70 wins?
Mark P
Unlikely, though Murakami hitting (checks notes) 162 home runs should be a lot of fun!
Josh
If the Diamondbacks start like 2-14 would they consider trading Ketel Marte before he gets his 10/5 rights in mid April?
Mark P
Even a truly disastrous start isn’t going to prompt Arizona to make a throw-in-the-towel move like dealing Marte so early
That’s the kind of trade that changes a team’s path for the next few years, and not something that should be done in knee-jerk fashion.
If the D’Backs were really that worried about Marte’s 10-and-5 rights, they wouldn’t dealt him months ago
Dave
Looks like the Phillies are not hitting again. When is it going to be time to make some trades? Or sign some hitters?
D. Dombroski
Should I trade Bohm by the deadline?
Ryan M.
What are the chances the Phillies fire Rob Thompson this year early on? Like what happened to Girardi.
Mark P
Philly fans are not super impressed by their team’s start, judging by this sampling of the many submissions wondering of the Phillies are doomed.
As I’ll surely be saying many times tonight….it’s early. Far too early to immediately hit a panic button or talk about firing Thomson.
Though I do kinda think they should’ve moved on from Bohm last winter, either via trade or even a non-tender
Blotto
New owners tend to cut back expenses. How will the Padres new owners do that?
Mark P
We’ll have to learn who the new owners will be, before starting the speculation about trimming payroll. The Padres have already cut back on spending over the last couple of years, plus there’s this unusual situation with Darvish’s contract and possibly retirement that could represent some unexpected savings for the team.
There’s also the next CBA to determine how baseball’s financial structure may or may not change, which also factors into how the Padres and the other 29 teams will approach future spending
I’m looking better than advertised. What kind of extension do I receive this year? And do you see one of my teammates in Elly and Matt getting extended as well?
Mark P
The Reds probably don’t have interest in extending McLain until they know what they actually have in him. McLain, for his part, wouldn’t want to take a lowball deal from the Reds since he surely feels he has better baseball in him.
As for Stewart, an early-career extension could still be possible, if the Reds are truly confident in him as a cornerstone. Again, one big opening series shouldn’t automatically lock Stewart as a superstar.
Weatherholt
Is JJ Wetherholt a legit Rookie of the Year Canidate also how hyped should St Louis be about him?
Mark P
He’s a consensus top-10 prospect, and it wouldn’t at all be a surprise if he was the NLROY. The Cardinals and their fans may not have a ton to root for this year, but watching Wetherholt develop should be a big plus
Steve
Being out of options can be a career death sentence. Do some GM’s manage options better than others? That is, they avoid using up a player’s option years to the point where they’re DFA’d at 24. Obviously it has to do with performance but there has to be some method to it
Mark P
It’s certainly a tricky web to weave, considering how a PBO/GM has to be looking at the status of dozens upon dozens of players in the organization. As we just saw on Opening Day, a lot of roster decisions were made with an eye towards option status, rather than a pure “who are the best 26 guys?” call.
The bottom line is that for most GMs who aren’t in clear rebuild mode, the focus is winning games right now. They won’t hesitate to bring a player up if that player is a better fit to fill a direct and immediate need, even if that might burn their last option. Some execs are former players and know all too well how being out-of-options can impact a player’s career, but at the end of the day, it’s a tough business.

What is the biggest issue with trade proposals from chatters?
Mark P
A lot of them tend to be “my team lands a star for two non-prospects and some roster dead weight. Who says no?”
Ken
Biggest surprise from the first series of games?
Mark P
Not a “surprise,” but the Marlins needs to go back to the teal jerseys full-time. They look amazing.
Disgrunted A’s fan
What are the odds that Forst, Kotsay, Aldrete, etc. will finally get fired?
Mark P
Again, it’s just one series. And if anything, the A’s staff has done a good job in trying circumstances over the last few years of rebuilding this team back into a possible contender.
Paul
Would holding the wbc in mid season work. Maybe eliminate the all star game that year and you could get more players
Mark P
As others have pointed out, a midseason WBC means that every international league also has to pause in July. It’d be such a huge undertaking that I’m not sure it’s entirely feasible, since even mid-year, you would never get a true “best possible roster” for every nation due to injuries or injury concerns

Bonds had 575 plate appearances against Hall of Fame pitchers; he hit .292 with only 7 strikeouts.

biggest overaction after the first weekend that you actually think is legit?
Mark P
The Blue Jays should’ve improved the left-handed side of their relief corps
Alex Cora’s recent quotes about the outfield logjam seem frustrated. They have to make a trade sooner than later, no?
Mark P
Cora’s not going to come right out and say that Yoshida isn’t really a priority, even though that’s obviously the case. Getting Yoshida playing time and hopefully production is the only way he can gain any trade value, however, which puts the Sox in a bit of a spot.
An injury immediately solves any depth problem, and it could be that the Sox don’t want to find themselves short-handed if they made a trade and then someone else got hurt.
Scott boras
Have I ever let a client take a big money extension before hitting the open market
“Plenty” is perhaps the wrong word choice since Boras has had tons of clients over the years, and the large, large majority have tested free agency. There have been just enough extensions that it isn’t a total guarantee, but by and large, you can count on “Boras guys” to become free agents
Had to pause the chat for a few minutes to update the Leo Jimenez post, as the deal is now official with Garrett Acton being DFA’ed
Ken
Should the A’s keep batting Kurtz in the leadoff spot? Does it just not matter (not in an existential sense)?
Mark P
I don’t think it really matters. You want one of your best hitters going up top, and Kurtz certainly qualifies.
RobertM
Over/under on Murakami being traded at the July deadline?
Mark P
Highly unlikely. If he’s playing well, the White Sox are more likely to explore an extension than a trade. I’m not sure it’d be a great look for Chicago’s future recruitment of Japanese talents if Murakami was signed and then quickly dealt.
ChiTownMusicGuy
What tunes are you playing today?
Mark P
At the moment, my playlist has “Song of the Future” from U2’s new EP
Cleveland
Are you aboard the Delauter train? He looks like Cleveland’s best hitting prospect since Sizemore.
Mark P
What a start, eh? Again, it’s only one series, so things could quickly turn once pitchers and coaches get more looks at him.
But if any team could really use one of their position-player prospects to finally stick in a big way, it’s the Guardians
Am i wrong?
I’m a Yankees fan. I didn’t put the Mets in the top ten of my power rankings because of their question marks and also put the Yankees at two because of their high upside if everyone stays healthy. All of my friends are calling me “biased” and “crazy”. Am I wrong?
Mark P
Neither of those takes are outlandish at all
Quisenberry
Everyone says the royals have pitching depth, I disagree. Injured often or old..noah Cameron, the exception, or AAAA. Agree?
Mark P
KC may agree, which is why they didn’t budge on moving any of their top arms or even a depth arm in exchange for hitting help.
I’m higher on the Royals’ rotation than you, just because even someone like Cameron just has to be a decent fifth starter at the MLB level. They’re not asking him to do more than that if everyone’s healthy.
Cardinals
Are we capable of a playoff push with this roster? What is a big area of need?
Mark P
Starting pitching, consistent hitting throughout the lineup, high-leverage bullpen help, and for at least two other NL Central teams to totally fall apart.
If you’re thinking these are pretty big “areas of need,” you’re right! The Cardinals would need a ton to go right to actually contend. The aim should be getting close to .500 and establishing some players as clear-cut building blocks.
Cubs
Thoughts on the latest extensions
Mark P
Like both moves in a vacuum. I think I wrote in a chat a few weeks ago that Nico was the likeliest of the trio of him, Suzuki, and Happ to be extended, even if I ultimately thought all three would probably leave. Uh, do I get partial credit for being right?!
The PCA extension, in particular, could be a steal if he develops into a more consistent hitter.
Zach
With all the extensions going on lately do you see a Langford extension happening soon? If so how long would it be?
Mark P
Langford becomes arb-eligible next winter, and a free agent after 2029, when he’s entering his age-28 season. Texas would surely want an extension that covers at least 3-4 of those free agent years, but for Langford, he might want to go whole hog with a decade-long “face of the franchise” type of contract.
Maybe some opt-outs could also be part of the mix, but overall, I’d expect at least a six-year extension at minimum. Who knows if a deal may or may not be reached, and the next CBA could be a factor. Langford might prefer to lock in some money and security now before free agency or payroll structure is perhaps altered in some form.

When do I start to get and consider offers on jojo Romero? Blue Jays…..
Luke
Do the Blue Jays just go out and get JoJo Romero? What would it take?
Mark P
Romero still being a Cardinal is one of the big surprises of the 2025-26 offseason. Plenty of teams were linked to him in trade speculation, though the Jays weren’t one of them.
Romero isn’t a perfect pitcher by any means, as he has had control issues and has allowed more than his share of homers. It could be that the Cards were simply asking for more than other clubs were willing to give up for a good (but not great) reliever
The Big Q
You’ve linked a lot of other MLBTR posts here, is it ever difficult to find them on the spot?
Mark P
Not with our handy-dandy search bar, located above the ‘top stories’ menu!

Seems like Estevez has something wrong. Who’s closing for you? Lange or Erceg? I know the OF has been a subject since seems like 1901, but they didn’t do enough. Can they fix it?
Mark P
Estevez’s ankle contusion doesn’t seem super-serious, but if he did need an IL stint, Erceg would be the next man up.
As for the outfield, maybe something shakes loose on the trade front well before the deadline, since waiting until the end of July might be too late. Or, maybe I’ll be surprised and Lane Thomas has a bounce-back year to prove me and many others wrong.
JR
What do you make of Baz extension?
Mark P
It was an awfully bold move, and one that I probably wouldn’t have made if I was the Orioles. Waiting for Baz to pitch well and stay healthy over the 2026 season would’ve upped the price tag on any extension talks, but also given the O’s more security that they were making the right call in locking Baz up.
That said, the O’s have signed so few extensions that it says something that they were willing to go the extra mile for Baz so soon after the trade. They clearly love what they’ve seen, and think the big healthy breakout year is coming right away.
Doritos Locos Tacos
Does Jackson Jobe pitch in August/September this year?
Mark P
That’s the plan for August, as Scott Harris said today. Jobe had his TJ surgery last June, so that 14-month rebab timeline fits.
Dr. Kenneth Noisewater
Beginning rant. If MLB wants to increase viewership why are they making it so difficult to watch games? I have had to sign up for two new apps just to watch M’s games. Games are on Netflix, Peacock, Apple and I’m sure at some point ESPN and Fox will be in the mix. Out of market games now cost even more to watch on MzlB. Hard to bring in new fans when it’s this difficult to watch. Hard to keep us old fans engaged with all these hoops to jump through. End rant.
Mark P
The flip side of this is that if you’re a casual fan who randomly decides one night “hey, let’s check out a ballgame,” you’ll probably be able to find one even if your viewing habits are limited to just one app.
It’s surely annoying that one can’t watch literally all of their teams’ games, yet MLB is also seemingly accounting for the fact that it’s pretty rare for someone to follow literally every one of the 162-game schedule.
Tim
What is the difference between selecting a contract and being called up?
Mark P
Selecting a contract means a player is being added to the 40-man roster, as well as usually the active roster. Being called up is when a player is already on the 40-man man.
Tim
Lou Whitaker, Bobby grich HOF?
Mark P
Yes and yes
Tigers
If the Tigers are contending, as expected, come the break, where do you see them trying to improve?
Mark P
Obviously any number of injuries and under-performance might skew these needs, but as it stands, I’d say bullpen and outfield depth
Nate
Think the Phillies ever play Harper in the OF again? I never got why they kept him at 1B once he got healthy again
Mark P
The thinking seems to be that keeping Harper at first base will keep him healthier. Harper has offered to go back to the outfield if necessary, though the Phils seem resistant
Cubbies
I know I know, it’s one series and I’m not actually worried. But just out of curiosity, we miss the playoffs. Craig has to be on the hit seat no?
Mark P
Firing Counsell means that the Cubs have to eat the last two years and $16MM of his contract. Which I guess can’t be ruled out if the team has a truly disappointing year, since expectations are high.
If it’s a winning record and a near-miss, Counsell likely stays
Brewer Fan
It’s the white Sox I know, but by that same logic it’s also the Nats so… Brewers just going to ho hum their way to exceeding expectations again eh?
Mark P
Nobody should be counting out the Brewers. They’re still a playoff team in my view.
Rangers44
I feel like the Rangers are not getting enough love for the rotation. DeGrom, Eovaldi, Leiter, Gore is a pretty great top four and they were arguably baseballs best rotation by the numbers last year. Yet I have seen almost no lists with them in the top 6 or 7 even. Gore was a sneaky good add
Mark P
It’s a very strong rotation on paper, yet the obvious issues are the health of JDG/Eovaldi, and Leiter’s lack of an established track record
Bobby Cox
Dom Smith big knock. Although with Murphy and Kim back in May any shot he stays on roster? Also we adding Lucas G if rehabs dont go as planned?
Mark P
Murphy replaces Heim and Kim replaces one of Farmer or Smith, most likely. Smith and Farmer are both playing for their jobs for now, and Smith has an edge since he’ll get more at-bats in the DH role.
Canada

How long a leash does Roki have in the rotation?
Mark P
“Once everyone is healthy” seems like more of a theoretical state than a reality for the Dodgers, but assuming Snell returns soon, Sasaki/Sheehan will be the odd man out.
I also wouldn’t rule out some modified six-man rotation for most of the season, in order to keep everyone fresh, accommodate Ohtani, and line everything up for October
Rangers Rotation
Gore also has a lack of established track record and I saw them 6th in Fangraphs WAR ranking
Mark P
Gore is weirdly the pitcher I’m most sure about in the Texas rotation. His floor is the type of season he posted in Washington, and I think he can pitch better in a new environment and on a team trying to win.
Natitude
What’s the industry buzz on the disappointing progress of Dylan Crews?
Mark P
Since Joey Wiemer is apparently going to win the MVP this year, the Nats had to send Crews down to make way for their new superstar!
Serious answer….figuring out what they have in Crews is surely one of the chief priorities of Washington’s new front office and development staff. Simply getting some extended Triple-A time to play and post big numbers might help Crews regain some confidence, and allow him to make a smoother adjustment when he’s inevitably called up at some point in 2026
It’s possible some rival teams see Crews as a bust already, but there are surely way more teams that would jump at the chance to acquire him if the Nats somehow made him available

Who has more saves at the end of the year Sands or Rogers
Mark P
My guess is Sands
Chris
interesting you even mentioned u2, are they recording, touring, wtaf its been a decade
Mark P
U2 are my favorite band, so don’t get me started, since I can talk about them as much as I can talk baseball. The plan seems to be a new full album this fall, and a tour next year.

With the extensions what’s next. Trade Shaw and/or Alcantara,? It’s seems Shaw has to go.
Mark P
Using Shaw as an outfielder might be his ticket to staying in Wrigleyville, since I still expect Suzuki and Happ to be gone next winter.
Conversely, the Cubs could try to trade Shaw for an established veteran outfielder
Giants Fan
Another miserable season?
Mark P
“Only one series, no reason to panic”
Lou Albino
What can we expect out of Zack Wheeler this year?
Mark P
Wheeler is already making rehab starts, and a return before the end of April seems to be in the cards if all goes well.
It’s a great sign that he’ll be back this relatively quickly, so perhaps that augers well for Wheeler pitching close to his old self upon his return. Even if he’s not all the way there, like 70% of Wheeler is still better than a lot of other pitchers, so the Phillies will happily take it
Balloon Man Dan
A solid first half give Javy Baez any trade value at the ASB?
Mark P
Very unlikely
Ebenezer_Batflip
Mets fans booing Bichette is bad even for new yorkers, right?
Mark P
Maybe they just misread his name on the scoreboard?
Bendix
Are the Cubs going to regret trading Owen Caissie?
Mark P
Not if Cabrera pitches well. A win-win for all parties is the ideal goal. As noted earlier, of course, the Cubs may suddenly be pretty short in the outfield by 2027, so it was an interesting decision to part with Caissie in particular. Might’ve just been that he was the guy Miami wanted and wouldn’t budge.
We’re two hours in now, so it’s time to wrap things up. Thanks so much for all the questions, as there was probably a backlog due to the lack of a chat last weekend. (Things simply got too busy on the news front, with teams making their end-of-camp roster moves.)

Thoughts on Cubs and extensions? Comp to Anthony and Red Sox,what percentage can be applied of regret to Armstrong,Anthony,Merrill in 3 years? Which tema takes a step forward due to locking up young talent versus using up a position and payroll?
Anthony Franco
I'd order them Anthony, Merrill, PCA on value but I'd happily have done any of them if I were the team. The track record on those extensions for high-end position player prospects who find immediate MLB success is pretty good
If that guy becomes Ronald Acuña or Corbin Carroll, it's one of the three to five most valuable contracts in the game. Even if they go the Michael Harris II or (worse) Ke'Bryan Hayes path, it's not the end of the world. Risk-reward in these cases almost always points to the team being aggressive if the player is willing to sign early
Cubs ones are a little weird because they follow a different path than the usual early-career extension. Typically a little shorter commitment that buys out one or two free agent years without attaching club options at the back end.
They did something similar with Happ and the first Hoerner deal. It reduces the long-term upside a little bit but they seem to prefer keeping the guarantee comparatively low (PCA would've beaten Merrill money if they went longer)
NL MVP candidates
Did the MLBTR staff have a chuckle that nobody picked anyone other than Ohtani to win his fourth consecutive NL MVP? Granted the NL might be somewhat light on superstars compared to the AL (Judge, Bobby Witt Jr, Cal Raleigh, Julio, etc)... but nobody thought Juan Soto deserved a nod? He's a 40-40 guy now after all
Anthony Franco
Ha, we did them all individually. I put mine in last before sending them out but deliberately avoiding looking at anyone else's picks when I wrote them all up. After four or five Ohtani picks, I wondered if it'd be unanimous
He's so clearly the best player in MLB that I think any of us felt like picking someone else would come off as too contrarian, but I would still take the field. Not like it'd be a huge surprise if Soto, Acuña, Carroll, even Tatis jumped in there
Randy, the destroyer
Who do you think gets squeezed off the Yankees roster when Volpe returns (assuming everyone stays healthy until then)? Their bench is Goldy, Grichuk, backup C Escarra and Rosario. Do they just drop Grichuk at that point?
Anthony Franco
They're probably assuming someone's hurt in between (Stanton most likely), but if they avoid any injuries, I'd guess Rosario's the odd man out. Feels a little redundant if you're also carrying Caballero on the bench
Could also option Volpe if Caballero and all the bench guys are performing. Doubt that's the plan right now but it would preserve all the roster depth and if Volpe looks shaky on the rehab assignment, wouldn't be that hard to justify
To ATL
I'm a big fan of Ozzie Albies the person, but is he on a short leash if his bat doesn't come to life? .548 OPS in Spring Training, yikes.
Anthony Franco
Eh I just don't think the Braves believe in Nacho Alvarez at all and I have tough time seeing the argument that even a diminished version of Albies is worse than Jorge Mateo or Kyle Farmer
The first $7M option was a no-brainer because he played well in the second half and there was the relatively big buyout ($4M). That's not the case for the upcoming option, so I wouldn't be surprised if they move on at the end of the year. Could curtail his playing time once HSK comes back by using Dubón at second, but I don't think Ozzie's getting pushed off the roster in-season
Joe Ryan
I'm guessing I'm gone shortly after the break. Or are ownership and the FO too directionless to move anyone at the deadline, just like they fumbled the winter?

Hello! We'll get underway at 2pm CT, but feel free to ask some questions in advance
Let's begin!
Still an A
With Didier Fuentes superior numbers to everyone he was battling 5th spot for, why is he still staying in the bullpen with Strider now on the IL?
Steve Adams
Fuentes only threw 70 total innings last year between the majors and minors combined. I imagine he'll be in a multi-inning role in the 'pen early on. Given the injury risk associated with basically every starter in Atlanta, I would expect he'll get ample opportunity to start some games this year, probably with a pretty regular cap of five to six innings to keep his overall workload down.Whatever shape the Atlanta rotation takes on Opening Day is going to be more temporary than that of the average club.

Thanks for taking my question - does McGonigle make the Tigers? If so, what does a reasonable season stat wise look like? Same for J Lawlar, feels like he’s been around forever, but what is the stats look like there?
Cat_Herder
Tigers start on Thursday. What are the chances we find out McGonigle's next playing location before then? They can't really send him to Toledo, can they?
Steve Adams
I'd be extremely surprised if the Tigers sent McGonigle down -- far more so than I was with the Pirates sending Griffin down. McGonigle has been so impressive this spring, and they have no other shortstop options who inspire real confidence. Early in camp, I thought it felt like a longer shot, but as the spring has progressed it's felt increasingly likely and now feels borderline inevitable.
Steamer and ZiPS have McGonigle hitting .255ish with a .330-.340 OBP and a slugging in the .415 to .440 range. I'll take the over across the board, but I understand that projection systems inherently just aren't going to forecast monster numbers for a 21-year-old who hasn't even played in AAA.I'm taking the significant over on Jordan Lawlar's projections (.235ish, .300ish, .370ish). I think he's going to hit for plenty of power. There'll probably be plenty of strikeouts, so the .235 to .240 average seems fair, but he's walked too much in the minors and has so much raw power. He's been really disciplined this spring, small sample notwithstanding. An OBP in the .330 range and a mid-.400s slugging with real 20-20 upside feels plausible.
No clue how the OF defense is going to look haha, but I think he'll hit.

Justin Crawford hasn’t exactly hit the cover off the ball this spring. What are the chances we see more Marsh in CF and Kemp/someone else in left if that continues?
Anthony Franco
I assume Crawford's got at least two months as an everyday player before the Phillies go there. Marsh is a little stretched in center, they don't have any great alternatives in left, and Crawford doesn't get much out of going back to Triple-A
Can argue they should've been more aggressive in shoring up the outfield depth but they weren't, and it some point, they do need to give Crawford to work through things at the MLB level
