Alec Bettinger

Brewers Outright Alec Bettinger

By Anthony Franco | May 19, 2022 at 8:01pm CDT

The Brewers announced that right-hander Alec Bettinger has cleared waivers and been sent outright to Triple-A Nashville. There’d be no prior indication he’d been designated for assignment, so the move clears a spot on the 40-man roster. That tally now sits at 37.

Bettinger, 26, has four MLB appearances under his belt. Those all came last season, when he worked ten innings of 15-run ball. That obviously wasn’t the way Bettinger wanted to start his career, as he surrendered a trio of home runs while walking three and striking out five. He had a more solid showing over a larger body of work in Nashville, however. Over 96 2/3 frames in a hitter-friendly environment, the University of Virginia product posted a 4.75 ERA with a solid 23.6% strikeout rate and a 6.3% walk percentage.

This season, Bettinger has made a pair of appearances for the Sounds. He tossed five innings of four-run ball before losing his roster spot, which he’ll now try to reclaim. It’s the first career outright for Bettinger, so he doesn’t have the right to refuse a minor league assignment. He’ll remain with the organization and look to pitch his way back to the majors.

Roster Notes: Bettinger, Burdi, Lakins, Tom, Paredes

By TC Zencka | May 29, 2021 at 12:24pm CDT

With three doubleheaders around baseball today, we have a number of 27th men getting an opportunity today. Alec Bettinger gets the temporary call-up for the Brewers’ twin bill against the Nationals today, per the team. Bettinger has made three appearances for the Brewers this season, including one start. Elsewhere…

  • The White Sox recalled Zack Burdi to be their 27th man for a double dip against Baltimore today, per the team. Yesterday’s game in Chicago was cancelled due to inclement weather. The 26-year-old tossed three innings against the Red Sox on April 19th, allowing one earned run in his only big-league appearances of the season.
  • On Baltimore’s end, Travis Lakins has been recalled to be the extra man for the day, the team announced. Lakins has been up and down with the big league club this year, and he’ll serve as a right-handed option out of the pen for manager Brandon Hyde. He owns a 7.36 ERA in 14 2/3 innings over 16 appearances.
  • The Pirates reinstated Ka’ai Tom from the injured list today, per the team. He will serve as the 27th man for today’s doubleheader. Tom began the season as a Rule 5 draft pick on the A’s, and as a waiver claim, he maintains that designation with the Pirates. Thus, the Pirates will need to add him to the active roster tomorrow in order to keep him in the organization.
  • In non-doubleheader roster news, the Astros optioned Enoli Paredes to Triple-a today to make room for Jake Odorizzi, per Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle (via Twitter). Paredes struggled mightily with his command, issuing 11 walks in just 4 1/3 innings.

Brewers Recall Keston Hiura

By TC Zencka | May 24, 2021 at 2:20pm CDT

2:20PM: Hiura has been officially called up, with the Brewers announcing that right-hander Alec Bettinger was optioned to Triple-A.  In addition, Jace Peterson was reinstated from the 10-day injured list and then designated for assignment.

10:19AM: The Brewers are returning infielder Keston Hiura to the big league club, per Robert Murray of FanSided (via Twitter). The Brewers have not yet announced the move, nor do we know the corresponding roster move at this time.

Hiura had one of the more disappointing starts to the season, slashing just .152/.247/.266 in 89 plate appearances before his demotion. The 24-year-old seems to have figured something out in Triple-A, however. In nine games with the Nashville Sounds, Hiura mashed to the tune of .438/.526/.906 with three home runs in 38 plate appearances. Obviously, that doesn’t guarantee that Hiura has fixed whatever ails him, but it’s a step in the right direction.

With the recent Willy Adames trade, the Brewers now feature a full infield. Adames, Kolten Wong, Daniel Vogelbach, Luis Urias, Travis Shaw, and Daniel Robertson are all in the mix for infield reps. With Hiura, that’s seven players for four positions. Hiura also makes 14 position players, which is almost certainly one more than the team is willing to carry at a time, so somebody will be on the move. Urias and outfielder Tyrone Taylor are the only two players with options remaining.

Brewers Designate Billy McKinney, Option Pablo Reyes

By Mark Polishuk | May 22, 2021 at 1:14pm CDT

The Brewers designated outfielder Billy McKinney for assignment and optioned infielder/outfielder Pablo Reyes to Triple-A.  The moves created roster space for Willy Adames and Trevor Richards, both acquired in yesterday’s trade with the Rays.  Righty Alec Bettinger was also called up from Triple-A.

McKinney was initially seen a possible DFA candidate during Spring Training since he is out of options and the Brewers ostensibly had a crowded outfield, but several injuries resulted in McKinney receiving quite a bit of playing time.  McKinney appeared in 40 games and hit .207/.260/.359 in an even 100 plate appearances, mostly working as a left fielder but also seeing action in nine games as a first baseman.

Once a top-100 prospect, McKinney is still just 26, and he has played for five different organizations.  Considering his value as a bench player, it’s quite possible another team plucks him off the DFA wire.  Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell said as much to reporters (including MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy) today, noting that “Billy did a nice job for us and he’s probably going to be tough to keep moving forward here.  He’s got a good chance to get claimed [off waivers] probably.“

Minor MLB Transactions: 5/2/21

By TC Zencka | May 2, 2021 at 12:46pm CDT

Let’s round up some minor moves from around the baseball landscape…

  • The Brewers injury-ravaged pitching staff will reach further down the depth chart today. Alec Bettinger will join the Major League club to make his debut, starting today’s game against the Dodgers, per MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy (via Twitter). The Brewers also signed catcher Christian Kelley to a minor league contact, per Robert Murray of FanSided (via Twitter). The 27-year-old will provide much-needed depth at catcher for the Brewers.
  • The Pirates released a pair of minor-leaguers today. Catcher Daniel Angulo and infielder Carlos Arroyo are now free agents, per Kevin Gorman of Trib Sports (via Twitter). While settling on the assignments as the minor league season opens, the Pirates have granted a number of veterans their release.

Brewers Add 3 To 40-Man Roster

By Connor Byrne | November 20, 2020 at 6:04pm CDT

Catcher Mario Feliciano and right-handers Alec Bettinger and Dylan File are now on the Brewers’ 40-man roster, Will Sammon of The Athletic tweets. Their roster stands at 39 players.

All three of Feliciano (No. 4), Bettinger (24) and File (25) rank among the Brewers’ highest-regarded prospects at MLB.com. Feliciano is an offensive-minded catcher, though MLB.com writes that “his defense should be good enough to allow his bat-first profile to play at the highest level.”

Bettinger and File seem to profile as back-end starters/relievers, but they were rather effective in their most recent minor league experience in 2019. Bettinger threw 169 1/3 innings of 3.44 ERA/3.13 FIP in Double-A ball then, while File amassed 80 2/3 frames of 2.79 ERA/3.04 FIP pitching at the same level.
